Hi! Big fan of your posts here :)). I have a few questions, why do you think Buddy helped Chase to begin with? And why does Buddy not ask for anything? It's really interesting how Buddy's background bleeds through his current behavior and actions.

Thank you for liking my posts!! (I'm sorry this took so long to respond to--this has been a rough week! So I hope this post makes up for it!)

I have been grappling with why Buddy initially helped Chase since the ep came out. I think it's most likely a matter of Buddy not really intending to help--Buddy likely made the bet exclusively because he doubted Chase could uphold it, since he genuinely disregarded Chase as a lazy cheater. how the mighty (Buddy) have fallen (in love)

If you look at the Cinderella episode, where Buddy starts helping Chase, Buddy "helping" mostly takes the form of him talking to Chase and explaining different things about the stories. In the Toffee arc, we see Buddy chat up and somewhat bicker with the Duke; Buddy talks and talks, even when he dislikes the person. It was likely the same! Buddy disliking Chase early on, but still enjoying the act of explaining and, thus, helping.

It's also worth noting--Chase, at this point, was relying on just himself to do everything. He hadn't met Silver, and Deacon wasn't in the picture yet. So even Buddy's minute, unconscious, unprompted help felt big to him. It was, technically, the first time someone helped him in the stories, and I think it goes to show how independent Chase had to be to see Buddy's actions as genuine help.

Buddy not asking for anything--that's likely a reflection of his background in Ex Libris. This is PURE speculation, but I do think it's interesting how the Keys originally hesitated to ask for things, and then proceeded to routinely ask/demand specific snacks, specific items, and little trinkets. Buddy might be similar--hesitates to ask for anything now, but might slowly become more comfortable with the concept later?

He also doesn't really do emotional talks? He blushes when thanking Chase, blushes when Chase asks if he's jealous and vehemently denies it, and we're about to see how he reacts to Chase needing to apologize to him. It's such a cool foil to Chase, who does emotional talks easily but blushes the second Buddy intiates physical contact (which he does, so often, without ever asking).

(The only time Buddy seems embarrassed was when he hugged Chase, but even that was because of the emotional aspect of it! It's also the only physical contact that Chase isn't embarrassed by, because of the emotional aspect of it.) They're idiots, essentially

Friendly reminder to everyone to always fact check your work. Even when it seems like it's right.

Case in point: I'm making a short little post about Gambian pouched rats(!). Funnily enough, they're named not for pouches in which they carry their young, but for their cheek pouches. Apparently most other rats don't have cheek pouches like hamsters and gerbils do. Neat.

Anyway, some of the literature I was reading said that Gambian pouched rats can carry a lot of food in their mouths. Makes sense-- they're big rats. But how much food exactly? I started looking. More sources agreed that, yeah, Gambian pouched rats can carry a lot of food! Maybe even up to 3kg over the course of 2 hours! That seems like a lot, especially considering Gambian pouched rats only weigh 1.0-1.5 kg. So I do a little more digging. Every source agrees that they can carry a lot, and they all cite that very specific number of 3kg over 2 hours.

Finally, I track down an actual paper about Gambian pouched rat cheek morphology (yes I went down a wormhole. This is my HBomberGuy moment.) The paper cites 2 sources for that 3 kg/2 hr number! Great! I find those two papers, and read them. And.

Neither paper says that. In fact, they don't really talk about Gambian pouched rat feeding habits at all. One is just an observation on natural behaviors, with a brief section on their diet but no information on how much they carry. The second paper-- written by the same guy-- was about how Gambian pouched rat behaviour changes in captivity. There was a good-sized section on cannibalism, but nothing on transporting food. So that first paper, the one that cited those other two for that 3 kg/2 hr figure, just straight up lied.

Moral of the story: always do your homework kids, especially when it sounds too good to be true. Also, Gambian pouched rats can probably carry quite a lot of food in their mouths, but whether they really can carry up to 3 kg worth of food in 2 hours remains to be seen.

i was kinda doubtful of whether or not i should use my old notes or make new ones, cause they’re so old a good small chunk of stuff on there just doesn’t apply to the final product. so instead i just cut them out into a million bajillion usable pieces :P

i don’t have much to say this time surprisingly. i think the notes just say it for me pretty well :)

i wanted to include references to some of the most important people in sanji’s life outside the straw hats to create a gentleman sailor’s ensemble! they’re all kinda subtle, but i think that fits the way sanji shows his affection for them and how they’ve shaped him as a person, in smaller less obvious ways.

i would’ve loved to include the full detail of the rings and play around with the clothes’ shapes, but it was a simple chibi so that’s ok! i’ll made a normal full body later!

The meeting point of these two is this: having hope while in despair, and even better, refusing to give up because you have to go on despite not having any hope left.

Memes aside I do keep thinking about how no one jumps for the beef. Your options are uncooked chicken or uncooked beef. The beef is marginally better; it’ll keep you further from starvation for just a little longer than the chicken would.

Only, the risk of reaching for it is greater than the risk of reaching for the chicken, and the fall could cost you your life, for all you know or all that matters.

Your hunger is kept low enough that you can’t sprint, and you’re never really taught how to parkour, are you? You’re kept on this level because you failed the jump when they tested you. You learn as you navigate this one-block-jump world.

(Maybe you don’t try at all. What’s the point?)

(Maybe you try and fail.)

You decide to jump for the beef, and live to tell the tale. Later, you get lucky enough to win the opportunity to try to rank up. You jump for the beef again. The parkour between your level and the next is just harder parkour, and you’ve gotten better at it throughout your time here, haven’t you? If you reach the top, you secure your place among the highest of the highs.

Only, the parkour’s final jump is impossible. No matter how good you’ve become, you can never beat the rigged system. The beef, should you choose to risk the fall, is a possible feat. You thought this would be, too.

You go home blaming yourself for a jump you couldn’t make or you die trying, clinging to the belief of fairness. The beef, for all its fanfare, couldn’t save you.

You don’t jump for the beef again.
