A thing I've noticed about my media consumption habits is that I kinda go through phases of either reading a lot or playing games a lot. Like when I'm in a "reading phase" I still play games but just less, and vise versa. But, when I'm in a "gaming phase" most of the stuff I tend to read is stuff like comics. So I think it's more words vs graphics? Anyway ADHD says it's time for a "gaming phase" so who knows maybe Calamity in Hyrule will get picked up again because I started playing Ocarina of Time again!

I think, perhaps one of the funniest things to come from EPIC popularising the Odyssey is that now a ton of people think Poseidon wanted to kill Odysseus.
In the Odyssey, Poseidon has no intention of killing Odysseus. In fact, part of the whole reason Zeus lets Poseidon do whatever he wants even though he thinks Odysseus is rad and should get to kiss his wife is explicitly because Poseidon had no intentions of killing Odysseus. Poseidon wanted to pay back the suffering/inconvenience blinding Polyphemus would have caused. It's a really abstract thing tbh. How do you pay back someone permanently disabling your son? Poseidon's solution was just to amputate Odysseus from his other half; i.e. Penelope. The end game was never murder, it was always an endurance race.

(Od. Book 1: Zeus reassuring Athena that he is not, in fact, a part of Odysseus Hater-Nation. Trans. Robert Fagles)
Also, for those wondering if there's any sort of in text reason for why Poseidon wasn't around in God Games - at the time in the Odyssey when Athena petitions Zeus to let Odysseus leave Calypso's island, Poseidon was -checks notes- on vacation in Ethiopia. Yep. He left to Ethiopia for a festival and thusly was very much absent for Athena's whole "please let Ody go? Please? 🥺" request.

(Od. Book 1: While Odysseus was suffering, Poseidon went to party in the east)
I am begging y'all to read the Odyssey. It's a comedy for everyone except Odysseus and Penelope who are, in fact, suffering 24/7 365.

It's super funny to me that, in Suffering, the Siren answers Odysseus's question about how to avoid Poseidon completely truthfully even though she was planning on killing him at first opportunity. It didn't even ping her radar as a suspicious question to ask. It's like her day job is drowning mortal men but her nerdy hobby is nautical navigation and she couldn't help herself. She did NOT have to give him any info but she was like, Ooh fascinating hypothetical question! Here's my analysis on the best way to survive. Anyway, get in the water silly :)

It just occurred to me that Poseidon's "I've been waiting for this moment" line in Get In The Water implies that he's literally been waiting on the shores of Ithaca for several years for Odysseus to return.
Now I can't stop thinking about the potential for several incidents happening over the years where a random Ithacan(?) Would spot horseidon on the beach, do a double-take because "wait, horses can't live on this island" (if I remember correctly), and then when they look again, horse is either straight up gone or staring directly into their soul.
Tumblr media
I always imagine Poseidon waiting right there at the shore, sulking over how long it took Odysseus to finally get there.

Personally I think Ody already knew Eury opened the wind bag, initially bc there's just something about his tone and the way Ody cut him off in the beginning of Puppeteer that felt... deliberate? But it's also mirrored in Scylla and Mutiny
It's just a little thing in Scylla but when Eury first tries to confess in Puppeteer Ody gives him a task instead "go check out the island" vs "light up six torches" instead of talking about it, like he's avoiding it
But more prominently is "whatever you have to say can wait some more of this I'm sure" sounds to me like "don't tell me. If you don't tell me we can pretend I don't know and I don't have to do anything about it. Lie to me (by omission)" vs Eury's "tell me you did not know that would happen" and "then you have forced my hand" while said in anger can also totally be ready similarly. I've already seen others talk about how he was basically begging Ody to lie to him so like, "lie to me so I don't have to do anything about it" again
(whether or not Eury would've been able to play along, assuming he did want that, I don't know, and ig we'll never know)
Also Ody's total lack of reaction. Sure Scylla had "leaving them feeling betrayed" but having it said out loud could still sting. It could also be a "I thought we had a deal to not talking about that" type betrayal.
Anyway many thoughts head full
