Why Are Seers Always Cursed? (3)
Wesley Weston is a son of Apollo with the rare gift of prophecy.
Written for @crossoverdanuary Week 2024, Day three: Percy Jackson | Lake
This takes place shortly before Annabeth, Luke, and Thalia arrive at Camp Half-Blood, and while Wes is still in middle school, meaning it's set before the primary canon events of both series. You can also read it on AO3!
Chapter 3: Downhill Fast
First | Previous
[Warning for mild violence]
Over the next two weeks, Wes started to really get the hang of Camp Half-Blood. A few more campers had arrived, including another Apollo Camper close to Wes' age named Lee Fletcher. The two of them got on really well right out of the gate. Wes did not manage to get out of explaining to Archer that he had the gift of prophecy, but for some reason, Archer told him that it would be wiser to keep it secret from anyone outside of Apollo Cabin.
Wes wasn't sure why, but he was starting to get the sense that his ability was more dangerous than it seemed. Archer warned that people might try to take advantage of him, or pick on him because they saw him as having an unfair advantage himself. So Wes' powers of foresight became cabin seven's little secret.
Unsurprisingly, Wes demonstrated a knack for archery. He'd never done it before, but it was like the bow simply belonged in his hands. His cabin-mates were very encouraging and helped him with his form so the bowstring didn't snap against his forearm. They were also fun to play basketball with. Wes established a personal record of scoring 90 feet from the hoop. Nowhere near the cabin's record, but still basically a full-court shot.
He wasn't as good as the others in the infirmary, but he wasn't so useless that they sent him out. They mostly had him cut bandages and get things for them, which was fine by Wes.
When it came to singing camp songs, Wes was exposed for his awful singing voice, but he was picking up the ukulele remarkably fast, so maybe he had inherited a little bit of Apollo's musical talents. Not as much as Lee, though; he was a regular musical prodigy as far as Wes was concerned. At only thirteen, he could play several instruments and his singing voice was downright mellifluous.
The one thing Wes really struggled with in the Apollo Cabin was seeing his cabin mates as his siblings. Technically they were, but Wes already had siblings. These people were basically strangers in comparison. And it didn't really help that he'd made a conscious decision not to think of Apollo as anything like a father to him back when he was ten years old.
The Apollo campers were warm, and accepting, and he liked them a lot... but they weren't family. Not yet, at least.
Aside from that, the only thing that really bothered him about this place was the pine tree that wasn't there, the one he kept seeing on the crest of the hill.
He brought it up to Chiron once, in private, and Chiron told him that sometimes they couldn't know what a prophecy meant until it came to pass. Wes only begrudgingly accepted that answer. He didn't like it.
What was the point of seeing the future if it didn't make sense until it became the past?
That pine tree became increasingly frustrating. Even more so than the monster attacks. They weren't daily or anything, but there had been two so far, counting the drakon, and both had been taken care of with only mild injuries and no deaths. That pine tree though....
Once, when Wes saw it, there was something gold hanging in its branches, and a dragon wrapped around its trunk fast asleep. Then he blinked, and the golden thing and the dragon were both gone. Then he blinked and the tree was gone too.
At the end of the second week, there was a terrible summer storm. For some reason, while the storm raged, Wes' eyes were drawn to the top of the hill. Each time a strike of lightning lit up the darkness, the pine tree appeared, just for that instant, before vanishing again. That felt important, but Wes didn't know why.
He told Archer about it, but Archer just told him the same thing Chiron did.
He didn't like it any better the second time.
Then, one night, Wes had a dream. He dreamed about the pine tree. About lightning striking, about a hoard of monsters straight from Hades.
The forbidden child approaches, the dream told him. The forbidden child approaches.
When he awoke, he thought about telling Chiron again, but then he remembered what he'd said before.
"You can't always know what a prophecy means until it comes to pass."
Wes sure as Hades didn't know what a 'forbidden child' was, and Chiron had already said he had no idea what the pine tree meant. Maybe this was one of those things where he should just wait and see how it panned out, rather than bothering anybody with his stupid dreams again.
Although... the last time he'd had a dream like that, it had told him Apollo would visit his mom.
But Apollo hadn't been in this dream. Just that stupid pine tree and a bunch of monsters. And it wasn't even worth it to warn everybody of monsters coming because he had no idea when this was going to happen.
Maybe he should ask anyway.
"Hey, Chiron," he asked the centaur during archery practice, "Do you know what a forbidden child is?"
Suddenly, Wes felt as if he'd been struck by something heavy falling on him. He stumbled and let go of his bowstring and the arrow missed the target by a mile. As it left his bow, he could swore the whistling sound it made as it shot toward a tree trunk sounded like an apology.
"Sorry, kid," it said. "I hate to do this to ya. I can't defy my father, you understand." Then it pierced the tree trunk with a thunk.
"My, are you alright, Wes?" Chiron asked.
"I'm... fine, but my question."
"I'm afraid not," he said. "I suppose if a child were to be sired by one of the three most powerful gods they might be considered a forbidden child, since the three of them swore on the River Styx not to sire children. But no such child exists."
"What if one did?" Wes asked. "And what if they were coming here and a whole bunch of monsters were chasing them?"
"That would be preposterous," Chiron assured him. "None of those gods would go back on their word, not when it's so important for them to honor it."
"But I saw it happen!" Wes insisted. "I saw three demigods and satyr climbing that hill," he pointed to the camp's border. "I saw them being chased by a horde of monsters from the underworld. I heard the trees whisper that a forbidden child approaches. I saw it in my dream last night."
"Dear boy," Chiron said. "You may have the gift of prophecy, but not every dream is prophetic. There is no forbidden child, and no horde of monsters. I can assure you. I hope you'll be able to calm down now."
"What?"
This didn't make any sense. Chiron's advice was sometimes frustrating, but he'd never been dismissive like this. He knew what Wes could do, what he could see. He knew that prophecies should be taken seriously. So what the heck was this?
"Why don't you focus on your archery for now?"
"But...." Wes was too confused to formulate a proper argument. He shook his head, his face scrunched up in a mix of emotions. "Okay...."
Wes lifted the bow again and lined up his shot. This time, his arrow flew true, and landed right in the bull's eye. But again, the sound of the arrow taking flight was a whispered apology.
"I cannot defy my father's wishes," it said. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry."
That night, Wes had the same dream again. The forbidden child approaches. The forbidden child approaches.
A few days later, on an otherwise ordinary evening, while the campers were enjoying dinner, it happened. An uproarious cacophony of monstrous shrieks and bellows shook the valley. The blue sky darkened as smoke rose up from the far side of the hill.
Wes sprinted to get his bow and arrows and followed the rest of his cabin mates to the ridge while the other campers headed for the hilltop.
They couldn't get ready fast enough.
They weren't even halfway to their positions when four figures crested the hill, three demigods and a satyr.
"Go!" one of the figures, a girl, shouted. "I'll hold them off!"
She stopped at the top of the hill, wielding a spear and a shield, and the other three kept running. She fought valiantly, slashing and stabbing at bat-winged creatures and hell hounds until they overwhelmed her, and she fell.
It was only then that the other campers finally got close enough to help her.
They were too late. Wes knew it innately. That girl was the forbidden child, and she was going to die.
Without warning, a bolt of lightning shot out of the clear blue sky, and struck the girl. Then she started to change.
As the battle raged around her, she grew bark and sprouted branches until a tall, proud pine tree stood where she'd once been lying, half-dead on the ground.
Wes had seen that tree before. This time, though, it was actually real. It didn't disappear when he tried to blink it away.
A pulse of light emitted from the tree, expelling all the monsters from within the bounds of the camp. Then the light faded, leaving an invisible barrier protecting all the demigods within its bounds.
Later, the three who survived explained what happened. The satyr, Grover Underwood told them all that Thalia was a child of Zeus, a forbidden child. He explained that ever since he'd found her, creatures of Hades had been chasing them. Hades himself had sent them, angry at his brother for breaking their pact.
Wes kept his anger contained until Chiron dismissed everyone. He waited until everyone else was gone. He stayed silent.
"Is something wrong, Wes?" Chiron asked, noticing that he wasn't going to leave.
"I told you this was going to happen," he said, barely keeping a lid on his rage. "I warned you about the forbidden child, about the monsters from Hades, all of it. You didn't listen to me. You told me it was just a dream.
"If you'd just listened, we could have done something. We could have put a group of guards up on the hill. We could have been prepared for this! Thalia Grace didn't have to die!"
"I'm sorry," Chiron said. "I don't know what came over me. I knew of your abilities, and yet... when you told me about the forbidden child, it was as if... ah... I see...."
"What?" Wes did not accept this apology. He glared viciously at the centaur.
"Did you hear anything else? That day you told me about your dream, or afterwards?"
His glare eased as he thought about it.
"Actually, right before I told you, when I stumbled and my arrow misfired, it sounded like an apology" Wes recalled. "And then again the next time I fired at the target. 'I'm sorry. I cannot defy my father,' is what it said."
"The arrow spoke to you?" Chiron repeated derisively, but he quickly shook his head with pained expression. "My apologies.
"It is the fate of all oracles that such great power must come at a price," he said. "Either one must make a willing sacrifice to balance out that power, such as the Oracle of Delphi does, living as a maiden her whole life in a cave. Or, the gift will lead the bearer to be cursed, such as Tiresias who was inflicted with blindness, or... Cassandra.
"I believe Zeus did not want the secret of his child to get out," he continued, "so he had his son Apollo inflict you with Cassandra's curse to prevent you from sharing what you knew, or rather, to prevent anyone from believing you, even if you did."
"What exactly is this curse?" asked Wes.
"That you may see the future, but that you cannot share it with anyone, for they will never believe you," Chiron answered. "It's a terrible curse. It means only you alone will ever be able to benefit from your abilities, but you cannot help others with them."
"Is there a way to break it?" Wes asked.
"I'm afraid not," the centaur answered mournfully. "A seer's curse cannot be broken. Even those who know of the curse will have difficulty overcoming it's effects. Even I... well, you've seen already. I have a strong enough will to fight my initial reaction if I'm ready for it, but my initial reaction will always be disbelief. I'm sorry, Wes."
Chiron's appraisal turned out to be right on the money. As much fun as Wes had at camp that summer, and as much as he learned and grew, his precognition became completely useless. Even his cabin-mates, who already knew about his powers, didn't believe his visions until they came true.
Sometimes people would even ignore things Wes didn't realize were prophecies. The entire Aphrodite Cabin got poison ivy, all because their counselor didn't listen when Wes said to take the other path.
The same thing happened when he went back home at then end of the summer. His mother, who always humored his hunches before, now fully dismissed them. His father would laugh like Wes was telling him a joke.
And the next summer, when he returned to Camp Half-Blood, it was the same story.
Now that they had a magic barrier, there weren't any monster attacks to keep their skills sharp, they'd introduced regular games of Capture the Flag in the woods. It was the perfect opportunity for Wes to use his foresight to help his team win, but when none of them would listen to him, he had to go ahead on his own.
He won the game for his team, but it wasn't as satisfying as he'd thought it would be.
It was a relief when he finally went home for the summer. He wasn't looking forward to starting high school, but outside of camp, there were a lot fewer situations where not being able to tell people about his visions was a serious problem. Or so he thought.
Strange things happened in Amity Park that year. There were monsters around town that everyone could see, ghosts, rather. Not from Greek myths, but from a portal to another realm in the Fentons' basement.
Wes tried to make it not his problem, he really did.
Until the night he woke up in a cold sweat with prophetic knowledge echoing in his brain.
Danny Fenton is Danny Phantom.
But no one would ever believe him.

CORLYS + LAENA
Following up from my other post where I compared Alyn & Laena, I wanted to delve a bit into the similarities Laena shares with her father. She's very much Corlys' mini-me too, in her own way.
ADVENTUROUS & DARING
Corlys Velaryon was a man apart, a man as brilliant as he was restless, as adventurous as he was ambitious. [...] At age sixteen, he became a captain himself, taking a fishing boat called the Cod Queen from Driftmark to Dragonstone and back. In the years that followed, his ships grew larger and swifter, his voyages longer and more dangerous.
— Fire & Blood, Heirs of the Dragon
A fiery young maiden, freshly flowered, Lady Laena had inherited the beauty of a true Targaryen from her mother, Rhaenys, and a bold, adventurous spirit from her father, the Sea Snake. As Lord Corlys loved to sail, Laena loved to fly, and had claimed for her own no less a mount than mighty Vhagar, the oldest and largest of the Targaryen dragons since the passing of the Black Dread in 94 AC.
— Fire & Blood, Heirs of the Dragon
MARRIAGE TO A RED DRAGON RIDING TARGARYEN WHOSE CLAIM TO THE IRON THRONE WAS PUSHED ASIDE
Rhaenys, at six-and-ten, was a fearless young beauty, and more than a match for her mariner. A dragonrider since the age of thirteen, she insisted upon arriving for the wedding on Meleys, the Red Queen, the magnificent scarlet she-dragon that had once borne her aunt Alyssa. “We can go back to the ends of the earth together,” she promised Ser Corlys.
— Fire & Blood, The Long Reign
Armed with Dark Sister, the prince made short work of his rival, and wed Lady Laena Velaryon a fortnight later. [...] Prudently, the prince and his new bride took themselves far from Westeros soon after the wedding, crossing the narrow sea on their dragons. Some said they flew to Valyria, in defiance of the curse that hung over that smoking wasteland, to search out the secrets of the dragonlords of the old Freehold.
— Fire & Blood, Heirs of the Dragon
BEFRIENDING SOMEONE WHO COULD HAVE BEEN A RIVAL
Reports had reached the court that Corlys Velaryon was massing ships and men on Driftmark to “defend the rights” of his son, Laenor, whilst Daemon Targaryen, a hot-tempered and quarrelsome young man of twenty, had gathered his own band of sworn swords in support of his brother, Viserys. A violent struggle for succession was likely no matter who the Old King named to succeed him.
— Fire & Blood, Heirs of the Dragon
In Daemon Targaryen he found a willing partner.
— Fire & Blood, Heirs of the Dragon
Though Princess Rhaenyra had been proclaimed her father’s successor, there were many in the realm, at court and beyond it, who still hoped that Viserys might father a male heir, for the Young King was not yet thirty. Grand Maester Runciter was the first to urge His Grace to remarry, even suggesting a suitable choice: the Lady Laena Velaryon.
— Fire & Blood, Heirs of the Dragon
Whilst Princess Rhaenyra misliked her stepmother, Queen Alicent, she became fond and more than fond of her good-sister Lady Laena.
— Fire & Blood, Heirs of the Dragon
MORE INTERESTED IN BOATS/DRAGONS THAN ROMANCE
Daella became seasick crossing Blackwater Bay, however, and on her return complained that “he likes his boats better than he likes me.” (She was not wrong in that.)
— Fire & Blood, The Long Reign
Only Lady Laena herself seemed untroubled. “Her ladyship shows far more interest in flying than in boys,” the maester at High Tide wrote to the Citadel.
— Fire & Blood, Heirs of the Dragon
DEATH UPON THE STEPS
For all these reasons, the realm suffered a terrible blow on the sixth day of the third moon of 132 AC, when Corlys Velaryon, Lord of the Tides, collapsed whilst ascending the serpentine steps in the Red Keep of King’s Landing. By the time Grand Maester Munkun came rushing to his aid, the Sea Snake was dead.
— Fire & Blood, Under the Regents
Sadly, Maester Gerardys came too late. After three days of delirium, Lady Laena passed from this mortal coil. She was but twenty-seven. During her final hour, it is said, Lady Laena rose from her bed, pushed away the septas praying over her, and made her way from her room, intent on reaching Vhagar that she might fly one last time before she died. Her strength failed her on the tower steps, however, and it was there she collapsed and died.

Profiles and HeroForge designs below for Wild Wasteland Tales (aka the Fallout AU that has melted my brain for the past month).
(I'd meant to post these after finishing the short fic I'm writing, but that "short" fic has surpassed 10k words, so...I'll just go ahead and post these anyway.)
Warnings: mention of themes common to the Fallout universe including gun violence, murder, nuclear war, radiation, mutation, non-consensual human experimentation, cannibalism and slavery.
(Also, extremely minor spoilers for the overall plot of Fallout 4, and setting spoilers if you're thinking of watching the Fallout TV series blind.)
Janus
Janus is a unique FEV mutant and the warlord-mayor of a lawless wasteland town called Darkside. A man of many secrets, he has an almost mythic reputation, partly due Darkside's policy of welcoming even the most extreme wasteland misfits willing to play by his rules, and partly due to the conflicting rumors Janus has spread about himself in order to obfuscate his true origins.
Tumblr media
Despite having built Darkside from the ground up as a place where all are welcomed, Janus has kept his mutant status a secret from all but a trusted few. While his physical mutations might be accepted, his ability to suppress others' emotions (primarily hostility and suspicion) is something he fears will see him rejected from the very home it has allowed him to create for himself.
Janus's deathclaw gauntlet is actually a leather glove designed to disguise the talons on his left hand as a crafted weapon.
He is unable to wield a gun with his dominant hand due to his mutation, and suffers a lack of skill wielding weapons with his right. Between this penalty and his poor depth perception, he is practically hopeless with firearms. (Also, his handwriting is terrible.)
Among his other mutations, Janus is cold-blooded. During the warmer temperatures of the day his strength and endurance are significantly increased.
He keeps a menagerie of mutated animals. His favorite is a glowing two-headed snake named Flim-Flam.
Virgil
Virgil grew up on his family's homestead, living off the land and helping to defend it against raiders and wasteland wildlife. In his twenties, exposure to radiation caused his transformation into a ghoul, and the hostility of a previously loving family forced him to leave home. A habitual wanderer and more than a bit of a loner, Virgil has since spent decades walking the wastes. His skill and experience is much sought after as a guide, hunter of beasts, and occasional hired gun, a well-earned reputation that he regards with an almost embarrassed humility.
Tumblr media
At sixty, Virgil is an old man by most wasteland standards but still rather young for a ghoul. The life expectancy of ghouls is unpredictable: he could easily live another century or more...or he might lose himself and go feral within the next month.
Virgil practically raised Janus. While neither of them would use the word "son" or "father" out loud, it's understood by everyone who knows them that they're family.
Virgil has always had difficulty interacting with people, and the discrimination he has faced since becoming a ghoul hasn't made it any easier. He gets very uncomfortable in crowds, and grows restless staying in one place. This sees him leaving frequently to wander the wastes on his own. Still, wherever he goes, in his heart he considers Darkside his home.
Roman & Remus
As the grandson of a Diamond City water baron, Roland Kaiser was born into a position of relative privilege for a wastelander. Stifled by his family's expectations but daunted by the thought of braving the dangers of the wastes outside on his own, he was mostly just biding his time until the inevitable day he inherited his family's business and all the duties that went with it... Until the day Roland found himself face to face with…himself. C8-73 was a synth (synthetic human) created in Roland's image, sent by the Institute to kill him and take his place in order to further their agenda of controlling the Commonwealth. However, C8-73 was...less than happy with the mission handed to him by his masters. Fortunately for both, their first encounter did not wind up going as planned... Two weeks later, a pair of twin brothers calling themselves Roman and Remus were seen passing through the Capital Wasteland, headed south along the coast.
Tumblr media
Janus's right-hand man in Darkside, Roman is the one he sends to smooth over disagreements with the locals and to field interactions with their neighbors when people come with complaints.
In his free hours, Roman mans the radio station out of Darkside. He delivers wasteland news, reads from pre-War books, and his own stories, along with music he and his brother have made together.
Roman still keeps contact with members of the Railroad out of gratitude for the help they offered to him and his "brother". More than one refugee synth has passed safely through Darkside with his help.
Tumblr media
Janus's left-hand man in Darkside, Remus is the one he sends to deal with problems when a lesson needs to be dispensed at the blunt end of a bat. He's also the one sent to negotiate with raiders, slavers and others entities that think they want a piece of what Darkside has to offer. (Remus's approach to "negotiation" often ends with explosions...)
A gleeful tinkerer in all things deadly, Remus likes to innovate with weapons. He is responsible for some of Darkside's most effective and...creative defenses.
Remus oversees the sourcing of provisions for members of Darkside's populace who engage in...taboo dietary practices, though he doesn't partake himself.
He also takes care of Janus's menagerie of mutant animals.
Logan & Patton
Born into Vault 66, Logan and Patton grew up together, cousins who are as close as brothers. Despite living a relatively sheltered life underground, all wasn't as normal or as pleasant as it seemed. As with most Vaults, their home had been designed with experimentation in mind, with its unsuspecting residents as its subjects. From birth through adolescence, the residents of Vault 66 are treated with drug therapy and surgeries meant to alter the way their bodies process emotion. For the majority in 66, this has led to a population that is easily pacified and controlled. For the outliers who begin to "act out", the only options are death or banishment. Logan chose the latter. Patton chose to go with him.
Tumblr media
The experimentation Logan was subjected to damaged his ability to express or regulate certain emotions, as well as his ability to recognize that he is feeling them in the first place. Vault scientists considered this artificially induced alexithymia an acceptable outcome.
As an unanticipated consequence of the experiment, physical pain or moments of acute stress will often trigger an abnormal adrenal release that causes a state of extreme hyperarousal and aggression. While far from mindless in this state, it can make him extremely difficult to reason with (and almost impossible to control).
Because of these outbursts, Logan was deemed too volatile to safely remain in the Vault.
Tumblr media
Patton's alterations are an uncomfortable mirror of Logan's: not only is he is constantly aware of what he is feeling, he often experiences the emotions he perceives in others as if they were his own. This can sometimes result in an agonizing emotional feedback loop.
His experience of this is so overwhelming at times that it can cause him to freeze, and he spent several months during his teenage years practically catatonic.
Patton experiences all emotions strongly, from the softest to the ugliest, even those that aren't his own. He puts conscious effort into being kind, and hiding that ugliness behind a pleasant facade. When these efforts fail him, the results can be unpredictable and often terrifying.
Patton's empathy is strong enough that he literally experiences the suffering of others close by. As such, he is the closest thing to a total pacifist that can successfully survive in the wasteland.
When combat is unavoidable, he prefers to use a syringer rifle loaded with darts. These darts deliver chemicals designed to non-lethally take an opponent out of a fight through paralysis, pacification, or inducing them to flee. (Patton is that most dangerous and unpredictable of wasteland creatures: a Charisma/Luck build...)

This is the first volume in the “A Sassy Cat Mystery” series.
Lawyer for the Cat by Lee Robinson
Sally Baynard is one of the best lawyers around. In the years since her divorce from Family Court Judge Joe Baynard, she dedicated herself to representing the worst and craziest Charleston, S.C. had to offer. But none of the murderers, burglars, or angry divorcing clients compared to Sherman, the dog her ex-husband appointed her to represent. Although the miniature Schnauzer found his way into her heart (and brought his handsome vet Tony along too), his case was a thorny one. With that business out of the way, Sally is happy to move back to non-canine clients... until a probate judge asks her about a cat. Agreeing to represent Beatrice, a black cat who's the beneficiary of a multi-million dollar trust and a plantation, Sally must put her wit, charm, and brains to the test, choosing among three colorful potential caregivers while dodging the former owner's angry son. Meanwhile, Sally must juggle the demands of the court with those of her aging mother and make a decision about Tony, who wants to get more serious. Lawyer for the Cat is Southern women's fiction at its most delightful, featuring strong, smart characters, a charming setting, and plenty of adorable critters.
This is the second volume in the “Sally Baynard” series.
Probable Claws by Rita Mae Brown

When Harry finds incriminating evidence, the killer strikes again. Heedless of her own safety, Harry follows a trail of clues to a construction site in Richmond, where the discovery of mysterious remains has recently halted work. Aided as always by her loyal, if opinionated, companions, crime-solving cats Mrs. Murphy and Pewter, and Tee Tucker the Corgi, Harry hunts for a link between the decades-old dead, the recently violently deceased - and ancient secrets that underlie everything. And while other deaths are narrowly averted in a flurry of fur, the killer remains at large - ever more desperate and dangerous. The deep-rooted legacy of corruption that’s been exposed can never be buried again. But if Harry keeps pursuing the terrible truth, she may be digging her own grave.
This is the 27th volume in the “Mrs. Murphy” series.

Hi! I recently read the scenarios when y/n went missing and then came back, can we also do it for the warriors (also known as titan shifters) Arigato!
Hey! I hope u like them! It may be a bit different from the show so I can fit the scenario better!
Contains spoilers from manga

Porco: when Reiner and Bertholdt return to Marley with Ymir; Porco is extremely upset. First he sees the girl who ate his brother, and the boy who his brother sacrificed himself for. When you’re not there with them, along with Annie, porco can only frankly care about you. He’s impulsive, ready to make improper plans to bring you back. But thanks to the war chief and the commanders, his wishes aren’t granted, forcing him to wait. Just like before, Porco always blames it on Reiner (even if he’s not there) in any way he can. Part of him, he feels terrible and wishes you were safe and sound beside him. At night it keeps him awake. After the battle at Shinganshina, you return with Pieck, Zeke and Reiner. He doesn’t even greet the other warriors and takes you into his arms, calling you stupid and how careless you were, but is happy to have you with him again.
Pieck: she trusts your abilities. She knows that you’ll be okay with the other warrior candidates on their way to Paradis. Quite the opposite of Porco, pieck knows how dangerous it would be if a emergency rescue mission was called. But that doesn’t mean she feels lonely. She’s a fairly quiet gal, only talks with her family and the warriors but very open with you. She misses when you would braid her hair as you talk about whatever came to mind. When the mission of Shiganshina takes places, she’s estatic to see you. Upon your arrival together in Marley, she doesn’t celebrate your return in public— she rather have it in private quarters, a moment only for the two of you.
Zeke: as the war chief, he can’t let idle things like this get in the way of world plans— if he tried bringing up a plan to find you, the commanders would shut him down right away. At night he goes to his quarters and sits on his rocking chair, smoking a cigarette as he watches the fumes merge with the air. Late at night he thinks what would life be if he had t inherited the beast, nor you inheriting a Titan of your own. One of his biggest things was to start a family with you. He kept it as a promise to treat that child better than his own parents treated him, maybe he could have played catch with his own son— if he would see to have one. During the next meeting to plan a raid on Paradis, Zeke is met with your familiar face as you quietly chat with Porco. He first heard that you arrived this morning while rarely anyone was awake except the guards by the gate— but that’s enough for Zeke. Not meaning to be rude, he practically drags you away from Porco so you’re both in the hallway as he stares at you for a split second before engulfing you. He lost many people in his life, he wasn’t going to let that be you next in the nearby future.
Reiner: Reiner plays it off that he isn’t afraid for your safety but when he’s alone or quiet, he’s always thinking of you. Are you okay? Are you even alive—dead? Whenever he hears your name, he can’t help but let unwanted guilt course through his body. Just after victory of the Mid East Alliance, Rei we watched the candidates celebrate their victory; pleased with their performance. He knows you would be just as proud as them. By then, it’s been four years since he has last seen you. You’re just as good as dead to everyone but there is a small flame of hope that is almost blown away. During the festival, Reiner has a terrible time paying but anything to see smiles on the kids faces. Before he can pay for another treat, he hears his name being called and there you are, not too far away from him, wearing the Warriors Coat, a red arm band with a tired yet happy smile.
Bertholdt: he’s deathly afraid of everything. You joined the Military Police wirh Annie, planning to help with the massacre of the 57th expedition— but you don’t. You’re on different orders to guide aristocracts through districts in Sina. When his identity is discovered, him and Reiner flee, separating from the scout regiment and in secret, Bertholdt is able to meet you in secret in the outskirts of wall rose. He tells you what’s going to happen, the war chief and Reiner a few feet away from the both of you to give privacy. Both of you know that this possibly will not end well. With those three working together, it doesn’t take long for them to persuade you to help them in victory against Paradis.
Annie: when you join the SC, Annie knows you’re in good hands. She does trust Reiner and Bertholdt after all. She wonders how you’re doing— she does feel some sympathy for her other comrades as well. When the fight at Wall Sina occurs, she can only think of you before her final moments prior to her crystallization. You’re a Titan shifter too, were you captured too? (SPOILERS FOR MANGA RIGHT HERE— DONT SAY I DIDNT WARN U) when the rumbling occurs and her crystal finally shatters, she thinks the first person standing in front of her is you— but instead it’s Hitch. Practically begging the poor girl for information about your whereabouts and learns that you’re with the scouts still, using your abilities to help go against Him. When you finally meet on the boat again, Annie can’t help but break down before she gets a chance to see you. About 4 years she could have spent with you were thrown down the drain, only leaving her with a year or two left with you.

Hello! I’m looking for recommendations for a particular trope/genre: Feudal Era AU as @superpixie42 would say. Fics that are Canon-era (Inuyasha-world without Inuyasha plot) but are not quite canon-divergent or fix-it? I’m thinking along the lines of Out of The Woods (Miss_Dyana), Kintsugi, If We Fall Anyway (both Evilillusions), for example. Any other genre/rating is good. Thank you! 💓
Hey @anisaanisa, it's no secret this is one of Mod Pixie's favorite AUs, so thank you for the chance to put this one together!

Chapter 4: Arguments
The rest of the afternoon passed as normal as the days before your arrival. Arthur Weasley made sure of it. Even if Molly attacked you with her dagger gaze when you and Bill hugged each other after you were done with dessert.
You didn’t know what Mr. Weasley had talked about with his wife while you were taking a shower, however, you noticed the tension rising from their bodies after you sat down at the table next to Bill and saw an annoyance sign on Molly’s lips. Her temple was frowned, reminding you of your own mother's gestures. Those flaming eyes, cleft chin, and pinion lips. Both women contract their features too much when they were upset and in your distress, you knew that they must not be disturbed.
The last thing you wanted was to hurt a marriage as solid as the Weasley's. More than once you heard your mother talk about it with your nanny making a powerful emphasis on how Molly and Arthur were able to carry out their marriage even if their economic conditions were precarious and the war was on their heels. They were an envied couple. Few dared to expand the family as much as they did without money in their pockets and spreading their progeny like a plague. No one was surprised, not even your mother, not when her marriage to Evan Grant was merely for financial advantage. Now Arthur and Molly looked upset, too upset for your understanding and you just hoped they could get along soon.
You weren't sure you deserved the sacrifice Bill's father had made for you, yet a flame of hope lit up in your chest. If Mr. Weasley started to trust you that was a good sign for others to do as well, right?
The afternoon continued as normal, seeing how Bill's plans to distract you from the fervent harassment of his mother was marred by the twins intervention. They had just finished a new product for their store and needed a good taster to certify the quality of their merchandise. It was a bad idea, he told himself, because twins were just a disaster and you didn't know them well enough to deny their good-natured pretensions.
"Be kind!" He yelled at them as Fred and George pulled you into their. Bill exhaled, pleading that his brothers wouldn't bother his girlfriend more than his mother already had.
Before taking you home, he thought about the pros and cons of your stay in the burrow. His conclusion was based on the fact that his entire family welcomed Harry Potter with open arms, so you didn't have to be the exception. He knew the difference in conditions in which his theory developed, yet he put his trust in the good judgment of his family even if the Grants' past left much to be desired. Bill didn't talk much about you with his mother, in fact, your presence at home was the last of his worries, the real problem came at the time of joining the Order of the Phoenix, would you be willing to fight against your relatives even if that mean betraying your own blood? Bill hope you will
Coming downstairs, Bill found his mother storing the leftover food in the fridge while the dishes soaked in the sink. Then he watched her clean each plate with her bare hands, no magic. William knew his anger was real.
"Want some help with that?"
"I'd love to, honey, thank you," his mother answered without looking at him. Bill raised the sleeves of his shirt to his elbows, dipping his hands into the tide of water and bubbles that flew across the kitchen. Molly was silent, drying the dishes and flying them to her place in the display case across the kitchen. Bill cleared his throat doubtfully "It never hurts to help, much less when I have so many things to do before the rest of the Order arrive"
"Don't worry, I'll help you with that too."
"Perfect"
"Mom, can we talk?"
"About what?
"You know what," Bill clicked his tongue, passing her the last plate from the sink to continue with the spoons. "(Y/N)..."
"Your father has scolded me enough about that girl, I don't need you to do it too"
"I wouldn't if you had a little consideration with her."
"More consideration?" Molly asked in a squeak. Bill shook his head. "I'm letting her stay at my home!"
"Our home, mom, ours," he corrected, drying his hands with a cloth. "This house also belongs to my dad, my brothers, and me. It's the burrow, a family property, not a secret club where some people can get in and others cannot."
"You know what I think of her"
"And you know I don't care." Molly looked scandalized at her son. She didn't understand what he had seen in someone like you or what you had given him to come out and defend you as he did "I don't ask you to love her, but at least you have to try...
"Have you ever wondered what will happen when she betrays us?"
"That's not gonna happen"
"You're very sure of that, William"
"I'm convinced, Mom. You don't know her like I do and, you know what? I see that wanting to talk to you was a mistake"
"Moody thinks like me," Molly stopped him when Bill was ready to go upstairs. The woman clung to the railing watching her son standing in the first step out of the kitchen "(Y/N) Grant is a danger to the Order"
"Really? Like Mundungus Fletcher? I beg your pardon, mom, but if there is anyone who represents a latent danger to the Order of the Phoenix, it's him and yet you have assigned him for the mission tonight"
Molly's lips parted and if it weren't for the fact that Bill knew her mother too well, he might think the woman was about to throw herself on the floor in a tantrum. Still, she clenched the bars tightly, her brow furrowed, and the redness on her cheeks washed over her forehead.
"William!" Don't talk to me like that!"
"I wouldn't if you had a little more respect for my girlfriend."
"Don't you understand? I care about you! For all of us!" She snarled angrily. "Having a Riddle in this house..."
"A Grant, mom, (Y/N) is a Grant and that's not the same." Bill descended his steps, approaching her mother, returning that angry look that she had inherited from him. It was a strange sensation. A dyad of emotions between joy and fear where the composed emotion was guilt. He had never exploded that way with his mother, but Molly hadn't behaved that way with anyone either "His grandfather is Lord Voldemort's half-brother and his brothers are all Death Eaters, what does it matter? (Y/N) is not. And when do we judge others by where they come from? If so, we could start with half of us. Being a Weasley is equivalent to being a blood traitor"
"William!"
Molly's face went from fury to shock to fury again. Bill's eyes were twinkling and Molly swore she had never seen any of her children this angry, or worse, this determined.
"What would you have done, Mom?" Bill questioned taking his mother by his arms in an attempt to make him feel her despair. Molly opened her eyes, scared. "When your family tell you not to accept dad? When your brothers object to your engagement, just 'cause the Weasleys have long been considered blood traitors?"
For the first time that day Molly's mind went blank, Bill guessed, rewinding the memories of how difficult it was for the Prewetts to accept the marriage. Bill pleaded silently, but pulled away from her when his mother gave no indication to be a little more respectful with you.
"We aren't like that. We don't separate people by where they come from, we hug them" Bill resumed his way towards the stairs, stopping a couple of steps up, turning to take a look at Molly's stunned figure "As you did with Hermione, Remus and Harry when you and Dad became his godparents after Sirius died. (Y/N) is no different"
"She will turn her back on us when the Order fight the Grants. That moment will come and you know it"
"Don't worry, i'll make sure that doesn't happen"
"She is not part of this family"
"That can be solved very easily," he said and the smile he wore gave her a terrible chill down her spine. "Because I'm going to ask her to be my wife."
Molly's gasp was the only thing Bill heard before climbing the stairs and heading to the twins' room. He always respected his mother a lot and even thinking of opposing to her wishes was inconceivable, but your well-being was something that was involved and Bill couldn't just let her mother control his life at her will. Maybe the mistake he made was not telling his parents the truth about you from the start or, in that case, mentioning that the woman he loved was the fucking niece of the strongest fucking dark wizard of all time.
Bill Weasley rubbed his face as he reached the twins' door. He no longer had to torment himself, it was done and the only thing pending at the moment was to get Harry out of his uncles' house, take him safely to the burrow and find the courage to do what he told his mother he would do.
Would you agree to marry him? He hoped so and if not, he wouldn't pressure you. You were young - even a little younger than him - and it would be understandable if you refused to tie your life to someone else's from one moment to the other. The war progressed every day and if you were going to do it, you would do it as soon as possible.
Loud laughings brought him out of his thoughts to observe you and his brothers sitting on the floor, right in the center of both beds, laughing at each other and touching your faces. From the doorway Bill can't see the full painted room, however George's face showed a rather abstract mural full of bright colors when he felt the presence of his older brother. Fred did the same showing his face in the same situation and then you turned to Bill, still laughing and your face smeared with paint. It seemed the twins had created a paint bomb in millimeter pills, that explode when you put a little bit of pressure. You tried to clean yourself with the sleeve of your sweater but you spread the paint even more. Fred and George laughed and so did Bill.
His heart swelled with love as he saw that at least someone in his family - besides him and his father - had hope in you. God, he may have even cried with happiness.
Bill never understood how a sunshine as beautiful as you was never accepted in your entire life.

Hi! I have a question about something concerning my WIP
So, it plays in a fantasy world in a time similar to out medieval times
Their royal family is completely matriarchal, sons only inherit the throne in an absolute exception cause people think it brings bad luck and such because of their religion
(the "church" and the royal family are in a kind of power struggle, both powerful but neither much more than the other)
Now the actual king was such an exception, becoming ruler as a child and having married as early as possible, everyone counting the days till he would have a daughter and with that a "proper heir"
Which he did. Everyone rejoiced.
Only, she showed as a young child to have inherited a magic that is forbidden by their "church", which would normally lead to a life in their version of a convent, without inheritance-rights cause it's seen as dangerous or even cursed
Now, cause she is the only proper heir and thanks to circumstances it probably will stay that way, this is a big secret
But she can't really control it very well and there are no others with that magic around to teach her because of the stigma
She's isolated in her own wing of the castle (it was emptied out for that purpose), with as few servants as possible, all sworn to secrecy and a teacher from a different continent, where magic like that is treated more openly and he as such studied it, but doesn't use it himself
Her father just really hopes that she can learn to somehow suppress it, so there will be neither a riot by panicked lowborns nor any conflict with the powerful religious figures of the country or any of that
Now to my questions:
1. Does the isolation make sense at all or is there something I should know so I can plan it accordingly? She still learns her duties as a ruler from carefully selected teachers if that helps?
2. Would the father even be king? Like, they didn't have any female heir at the time because of reasons, but would people that believe this so much rather let him be regent until he has a daughter who can officially be queen or made him king until a daughter could take his place and hope the best? I'm not sure if there is even the possibility to be regent until a proper heir is born instead of just when they're too young or otherwise inconvenienced??
3. Is it reasonable that the noble families made up all possible rumors about why she's supposedly "locked away" like that? (stuff like "she's too hideous even for her parents to look at" or "she's a terrible person that throws tantrums when you just look at her wrong) If so, what could the father try to combat it?
I'm sorry for sending such a long ask, but I really need the opinion of someone who knows their stuff^^
Thank you for any kind of answer you can give me!
Yes but the only thing to consider about the isolation is the publics view. If there's no explanation, it could lead to rumours flying and rumours are often dangerous to any regime.
Yes, he would be King. As you said there was no heir at the time, so he had to be King. He's King for life or until he abdicates.
He can only combat the rumours by letting her out from time to time to show them she's alright, at least outwardly.

Chapter 29 – Truth Will Out
Chapter 1     Chapter 28
Marinette slowly, carefully closed the bedroom door. She waited next to the door with her hand on the knob for a few seconds just to make sure Rob really had fallen asleep and wouldn’t start crying again.  Hearing no noise for a full minute, she let out the breath she had been holding in case the sound from her breath woke him up.
She gently removed her hand from the knob and silently padded toward the library, which had quickly become their regrouping center, much to Jason’s annoyance.  However it was right across the hall from the room their family was staying in while at the manor and it had almost immediately been annexed as a place where she and Dick could relax and talk to people while still being close enough to hear the twins when they woke up.  For quick naps and showers while the twins were sleeping, they used Dick’s room, which was just a little further down the hall.  But the library offered a place that was more open to the whole family.
“And thank you two for not meowing or trying to sneak past me,” she cooed at Kismet and Alfred as she walked.  All of the animals in the house had taken a liking to the twins and more often than not, Marinette or Dick were woken up by one of them scratching at the door to get into the bedroom so they could curl up with one of the twins or lay down at the base of one of the cribs.
As long as they were quiet about it and didn’t wake up the twins, Marinette thought it was absolutely adorable.  However, those rare times when their scratching or barks or meows woke up the twins, Marinette would send them a glare that had the dogs running with their tails between their legs and the cats… well, not really reacting at all until Marinette got the water bottle.
“He sleeping?” Dick asked looking up as she came in and chuckling at the line of animals trailing behind her.
“Welcome home.  And yes. We have a little bit of time before they wake up again,” she smiled at him, slumping onto the couch next to him.
He hugged her into his unbandaged side, chuckling into her hair.  “You want to take a nap?”
Marinette made a vaguely groan sounding noise and pushed away from him just enough to angle her head up to look at him with a sleepy smile.  “I’ll do that during their next nap.  I think I should eat during this one.”
“Do you want me to talk to Alfred?” he offered, half getting up as he spoke.
“I can make something for her,” Adrien offered, waving him down.  “Or let Alfred know so he can.  You can rest if you want.”
“Thanks, Adrien,” Dick gave him a grateful smile. “Actually, I think I’m going to shower. Get the Academy off of me.”
Marinette pulled her shirt away from her body and eyed it suspiciously.  “Yeah, I’m not sure when the last time I took one was.  Maybe I should do that during the next nap time instead.”
Dick chuckled and pulled her closer.  “You know, you could always take a shower with me…” he whispered into her hair.
Marinette blushed deeply and pushed his face away.  “Yeah, not there yet.  Food, sleep, nap, shower.  Those are my priorities right now.  And I’m extremely negotiable on the shower part.”
“Two of those were the same thing, Bug,” Adrien shook his head.
She narrowed her eyes and pointed at him as if challenging him.  “All four can be the same thing if I try hard enough.”
Dick rolled his eyes but laughed in spite of himself. “You’ve been hanging out with Stephanie too much.”
Marinette scoffed.  “If anything that’s Alya’s influence…” her eyes suddenly widened. “Oh God.  They can never meet.”
Adrien scoffed this time.  “Alya got that from you, not the other way around.  You and Steph are the danger duo.  Although you, Steph, Cass, and Alya… I’d be afraid for Gotham.”
Dick shuddered at the thought.  The sheer chaos of it.  “Just make sure I’m not on duty that night, please.”
Marinette giggled and rested her head on his shoulder. “How was the first day, Cadet Grayson?”
“Eh,” he shrugged.  “Boring.  Introductory stuff.  Not that I’m expecting it to get better.  I’ve known more about police procedure than most officers since I was eight.  I can already pick out some of the cadets who joined as a power play.  I also recognized a few people I bus…” he looked over to Adrien with a grimace, “…who I know I’ve seen on the news after the bats busted them.  Which means either the person in charge of vetting entrants didn’t do their job, ignored the records, or someone on the force expunged their records.  I already let Gordon know,” he gave out a tired sigh.
“You sound like you need a nap,” Marinette poked him in the cheek.
He hummed noncommittally as he caught her hand and brought it up to his lips for a kiss, causing Marinette to blush again and bury her head in his shoulder.  If he kept doing little things like that, she didn’t know how much longer her resolve was going to last.  But it had to last.  They had to wait until they figured out their issues.  They couldn’t rush it.
“Shower first, then we’ll see what the twins allow for,” he smiled at her.
“How long will Clover and Hood sleep?” Adrien asked too innocently for his comment to not be intended to get a reaction.
“I hate you,” Marinette grumbled into Dick’s shoulder, but made sure it was loud enough for Adrien to hear.  Adrien laughed hard at her reaction but immediately tamed it down after the glare Marinette shot him.  If he woke up the twins, she really would hate him.
“Clover and Hood?” Dick asked unsure, looking back and forth between Adrien and Marinette.
“Lucy, Lucky, Four Leaf Clover, Clover.  Robert, Rob, Robin, Robin Hood, Hood.” Marinette elaborated into his chest.
Dick stared at her for a few seconds, letting the logic train sink in.  He glanced over to Adrien in time to catch his smug grin.  He leaned down to whisper in Marinette’s ear.  “We can’t let him call him after Jason.”
Marinette gave him a flat look.  “You explain it without telling him who you are,” she whispered back, working hard to keep the smirk off her face.  She knew Adrien knew who Dick was, but Dick didn’t know and was still trying hard to keep it a secret.  Adrien knew that too, which is why he was having so much fun pushing his buttons.
“You can’t call my son ‘Hood’.  You can’t go around yelling ‘Hood’ at a kid.  People are going to think he’s a thief or that you saw Red Hood,” Dick finally reasoned.  Marinette pouted at how he handled it.  It was entirely too quick and well thought out.  She was hoping for something more dramatic.
Adrien pouted at him.  “Fine.  That makes sense.  I’ll come up with something else.”
“Good.  That was subpar effort, K…” she suddenly woke up slightly and blinked a few times. “Uh… sorry.  That was a terrible effort, Adrien.”  Adrien gasped dramatically, pulling his hand to his chest in mock offense.
Dick laughed.  “Okay, I’m getting up.  You’re going to have to find another warm pillow.”  Marinette mumbled something that might have been an objection, but made no move to stop him.  He scooted out from under her, kissing her on the head as he left.
Adrien was trying to get Marinette to tell him what she wanted to eat and keep her awake as he was leaving.  Dick shook his head and wished him good luck with that.  When Marinette crashed, it was hard, a bit like Tim after a bender on a case.  A tuba couldn’t wake her up.  And yet, the slightest whimper from one of the twins would.  He shook his head.  Must be a hormonal thing.
He let out a deep sigh as he made his way to his bedroom to take a shower.  He wished they were going to take a shower together, or a nap together… or something more, but they weren’t there yet, and he knew that.  They were still figuring out some lingering trust issues. Marinette trusted him, but not when it came to not lying about something he thought was important, which was fair, because that was something he needed to settle with himself.
He was so used to deceiving people to cover his vigilante work and to do what needed to be done, he was having a hard time remembering he didn’t have to do that with Marinette.  It had been ingrained in him that he was the leader and therefore took the brunt of the decision and all the worst of the consequences, so he forgot he was supposed to be sharing responsibility and decisions with Marinette for the rest of his life.  The things he was doing were the way Batman would do them and he wasn’t Batman.  He didn’t want to be Batman.  That wasn’t his dream.  His dream was having a loving family, preferably the one he had already started.  He wanted to be Lucy and Robert’s father.  He wanted to be Marinette’s husband, someday.  He had to change how he thought to make his dreams come true.  He had to retrain his brain and it was taking time.
He turned on the shower and started to undress before remembering he left his shower things in the bathroom off the family bedroom. He groaned, dreading the idea of going back into that room while the twins were sleeping.  Lucy was like her mom, she could sleep through most things, except the animals making noise.  Robert however inherited his father’s tendency to wake up at the slightest sound.
He anxiously looked around for something else to use, but there wasn’t anything in his bedroom or bathroom.  He groaned again, turned off the shower, and padded back to the family bedroom.  He paused outside the room to prepare himself and plan how he could be as quiet as humanly, or possibly even more than humanly, possible.  His whole body went rigid when he heard talking in the room.  Nobody was supposed to be in the room.  Marinette had left it with just the twins.  She would never have left so calmly if anyone else were in it, even a family member.
“Come on, Sugar Cube.  This is offensive.  Look at this long nosed monstrosity.  It should be a cat.  I should accidentally destroy…”
Dick stopped listening at the word ‘destroy’.  He tensed for a fight and burst into the room with a yell.  The two figures hovering over the cribs squeaked in surprise and the elephant stuffie Marinette had made, which seconds before had been in the black one’s hands… paws? In the black one’s grip suddenly evaporated in a stream of dust and ash.  Dick froze in surprise unable to make sense of the image in front of him.
Marinette and Adrien rammed into Dick in their rush to check out what was happening.  The push broke Dick of his paralysis.  He moved between the floating figures and the twins.  “Who are you?  What do you want?”  He quickly picked up Robert when he started fussing at the sudden noise.
“Plagg… Why is there a pile of ash on the floor?” Marinette glared at him.
“Pla… you know what these creatures are?” Dick whipped around to stare at her.
“Yes,” Marinette admitted with an annoyed glare at Plagg.  “Let’s get Robert back to sleep and talk in your room.”
Dick looked at her incredulously.  The red figure obediently flew through the wall into the next room, but the black one stared at him as if challenging him.  Adrien silently moved over to it and grabbed it by the tail to fling it out the door with a huff.  Dick slowly turned to Marinette, staring at her questioningly. She gave him a strained smile and gently took Robert out of his arms.  She laid him in the crib, gently rocking him in his swaddle in the crib and turned on the mobile above his bed.  It took a few more minutes, but Robert was soon sleeping again.  She motioned out of the room with a comforting smile.
Dick glared at her, but followed her to his room as requested.  She carefully closed the door behind them.  As soon as she got to his room she glared at the black figure.  “Plagg, what the hell just happened?”
“Hey!  It’s not my fault!  Pompous circus boy was supposed to be in the shower in his room.  Instead he’s sneaking around like a fox and scared me.”  He flew toward Dick but Adrien grabbed his tail again to stop him. “Talk to the annoyance, not me,” he grumbled crossing his arms over his chest.
“I am talking to the annoyance,” Marinette gritted out.
“That hurts, Bug,” he responded in a mock hurt voice.
“Not as much as it’s going to.  No camembert for a month,” she growled.
“A month!”  His eyes suddenly were as large as the rest of him.
“Are you kidding me right now?” she exclaimed loudly. “You’re objecting to a month? You’re lucky it isn’t six!”
“Bug, have mercy on a poor, innocent, protective cat,” he bent his knees and brought together his hands as though he were praying in front of her.
“It was my nursery!  And my pompous circus boy you just exposed yourself to,” she threw her hands up in the air in frustration.
“Hey!  I have no idea what’s going on here, but I’m fairly confident I’m justified in objecting to that,” Dick interjected.
Marinette looked over to him as if just remembering he was in the room.  She groaned and pinched the bridge of her nose.  “It would have been so much better if this happened after a nap.  I…” she collapsed on the edge of the bed.  “I don’t know where to start.”
“You knew those things were here.”  It was a statement not a question.
“Yes,” she confirmed with a short nod.
“And you didn’t think it was worth mentioning?” he questioned, skepticism lacing his voice.  This wasn’t some small thing, some small secret.  These were magic, probably, creatures roaming around his kids and his home.  Creatures Marinette knew about and never discussed with him.  Creatures Marinette exposed his children to and never discussed with him.
“You didn’t think your nightly activities were worth mentioning when you were missing half the pregnancy?” Marinette raised her eyebrow with a pointed look.
Dick grimaced slightly.  “Okay, point taken.  But I remember getting yelled at for keeping it from you.  I remember you breaking up with me for keeping it from you and you were keeping something just as big from me.”
“No, you got yelled at for lying.  We broke up because I couldn’t trust you after all the lies.  I was asking you questions and you were lying in response.  We were still finding out about each other, figuring each other out, deciding how much to trust one another.  I told you before, you were and are allowed to have secrets and that I had some too. This is one of them.”
“Okay fine.  I don’t know that I agree with that logic, but okay.  Let’s shelve that to come back and bite us later.  But can someone explain…” he motioned toward the floating figures.
“Well you see…” Adrien started, rubbing the back of his neck.
“I think he means me,” Marinette interrupted.  The exhaustion seeping out of her voice and listless posture.
Adrien looked between the two of them.  “Oh, right.  Why don’t I…” he looked around uncertainly.  “Why don’t I leave you to it then?”  He turned to look at Marinette sincerely.  “Unless you want me to stay around, just in case.”  He eyed Dick suspiciously.
“I’ll be okay, Kitty,” she assured him.  “We were going to have this conversation soon anyway. This just pushed it forward by a few weeks.”
“I’ll stay, just in case,” Plagg insisted, floating up in front of Dick’s face with a malicious grin.
“No, you won’t.  Not if you’re going to threaten my babies’ father,” Marinette chastised sternly.
“Fine!  No threatening him.  I’ll just stay… and keep Tikki company,” Plagg offered petulantly.
“No.  I don’t want either of you here,” Dick objected.  Plagg looked affronted but Tikki gave him a look of understanding and started tugging him toward Adrien.  “I don’t want creatures with unknown powers, actively destroying things, to be around my children.”
“Why don’t I take them both tonight?  You guys should be pretty safe here in the manor.  If you need us, we’re just a phone call away,” Adrien assured her.  He opened his pocket for the kwami.  Tikki zipped over to him but Plagg held his position, attempting to stare down Dick. He was fuming from the suggestion that he would ever hurt the twins.  He’d been with the twins more than Dick had and yet Dick was kicking him out!  The unmitigated gall!
“Thank you, Adrien,” Marinette answered quietly.  “Plagg,” she spoke up.  He kept facing Dick but his ears twitched indicating he had heard her. “Plagg, thank you for everything you’ve done.  Let me speak to Dick alone please.”
Plagg huffed at her.  “I don’t wanna.”
“I know,” Marinette moved over to him and scratched between his ears.  “But, Adrien’s right.  We’ll be safe tonight.  You’ve been on babysitting duty for seven months straight.  You can take a break for one night.”
Plagg huffed at her again, still refusing to move. Tikki flew out of Adrien’s pocket to tug on him.  “Come on, Stinky Sock.  Let them have some time alone.”
Plagg finally acquiesced, but sent a final glare to Dick.  “Fine. But if he hurts her…”
Tikki pushed him again.  “He won’t hurt her.  Come on protective cat.  You’re causing more damage than good.”
Adrien let out a relieved sigh and nodded to them. Just before leaving the room he turned and gave a pointed look to Marinette before shifting his eyes down to his ring with a nod.  Marinette smiled at him with an understanding nod at his wordless permission to divulge his identity.
She slowly turned back to Dick.  She shifted anxiously from foot to foot, her entire body tense. This was not the way she wanted to tell him, but then again Dick hadn’t gotten to dictate the terms of either of his reveals either.  Neither of them got to prepare for the deep, meaningful conversations.  But, even if timing might be against them, she had faith they could do this.  They had always been able to communicate, excepting the lying portion, they had always been able to talk through their concerns and worries.  She just had to breathe and be honest.  They could do this.
Dick studied her carefully trying to read the situation from her body language.  She was nervous, but not at all about the creatures.  She was completely at ease with them despite the stuffie incident. And Marinette was one to catastrophize. She was more likely to anticipate the worst than just blithely accept it.  Which meant she is thoroughly familiar with them and their powers.  She was completely confident they did not pose a threat to their children.  No, that wasn’t what she was nervous about.  She was nervous about him and how he was going to react to the situation. He sighed and leaned against the desk. Their lives were a complicated mess. “Let’s start slow.  What did you mean he’s been on babysitting duty for the last seven months?” Dick finally asked.
“Plagg has been with me constantly since the pharmacy incident,” Marinette answered quietly.  “That incident scared Adrien and the kwami a lot.  They wanted Plagg to be with me too in case something else happened.  I wouldn’t transformed while pregnant, especially not with Plagg, but he could do other things, like let Adrien know where I was if I got kidnapped and lead him to me.”
Dick stared at the door Adrien had left through, the clues slowly starting to click into place.  “Because Adrien is Chat Noir.  That’s why Chat is so protective of you, because he’s Adrien.”  Dick’s mind was racing through all the implications, missing the way Marinette winced in response to his wrong assumption.  He looked over to her as something else clicked into place.  “When Chat said he had you bugged, he meant that thing.  That that thing…”
“A kwami named Plagg,” she supplied.
“That… Plagg was with you,” he finished.  She nodded.  “And that creature… Plagg, how dangerous is he?”
“Depends,” she bobbed her head to the side in a wishy-washy motion.  “Kwami are the physical embodiment of concepts.  Tikki is the embodiment of creation and good luck.  Plagg is the embodiment of destruction and bad luck, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.  I haven’t discussed it with Adrien, but I’m pretty sure the destruction of the Court of Owl base where they were holding me, was Plagg.  I don’t think Adrien could have done it that completely.  It had to have been Plagg.  They are linked to physical objects that a person can wield, when transformed their power is a lot more controlled by the wielder.  But Plagg has control too.”
“He accidentally destroyed a stuffie,” he gave her a pointed look.
She waved off his concern as she rolled her eyes.  “That wasn’t accidental.”
“You can’t know that,” he said cautiously.  She may be comfortable with having a creature like this around his children, but he definitely wasn’t.
“If it was accidental, there would have been a whole lot more damage and no ash trail.  The destruction would have been complete.  When he accidentally destroys things, entire cities disappear.  Entire orders of animals become extinct.  That was a controlled, focused use of his power. Likely because Robert was showing a bit too much attention to that stuffie rather than the black cat stuffie.”
“Okay…”  He eyed her suspiciously, not entirely convinced.
“Also, I should warn you.  Intentional use of his power to punish can result in destroying a cult’s stronghold or… sinking a city,” she gave him an overly wide, tense smile.
“Like Atlantis,” he nodded in realization.
“Like Atlantis,” she confirmed.  “Apparently he still holds a grudge too.  Your friend Garth, he’s Aqualad, right?  He has to be.  Plagg was acting up all night when I met your friends.  Every time Garth came near me, Plagg was pitching a fit.  I couldn’t figure out why and he wouldn’t tell me.”
“That’s what that noise was!” Dick gasped.  He had thought something was going on.  Some emergency at the office because her purse had been buzzing constantly.  “I thought your phone just kept going off.”
“No, just Plagg being overprotective and not wanting him near me.  I had to keep hitting my bag.  I’m surprised your friends didn’t think I had muscle spasm problems,” her eyes widened in embarrassment remembering that part of the night.
“Okay… so that’s why you had Plagg, because Adrien asked you to keep him.  Is it the same for the other one Teachi?  Did her wielder ask you to keep her too?” He cocked his head to the side, a slight furrow marring his brow as he tried to force the pieces together.
“Tikki.  No.” She looked away nervously and ran her hands up and down her arms to try to calm herself down.  She knew there was no reason to be nervous.  Dick wouldn’t reject her or be mad at her for having been a hero.  But he was the first person outside of her team to know.  The first new person who would find out and she could never take it back and that was terrifying.  She had to be absolutely sure of him.
But she was.  She was sure about him.  She wasn’t sure if they would end up together.  She wasn’t sure if they would get married and have more kids, but she was absolutely sure she could trust him, at least with this much.  And she was absolutely sure she didn’t want to keep it from him any longer.  “Tikki is with me because she’s my kwami.”
“Your…” he stared at her.  His eyes suddenly widened in surprise.  “You’re Ladybug!”
“I was.  That’s why Adrien was so protective.  We were partners.  When I said we were always together during attacks, that’s why we were.  When I said we died for each other… that’s why we did,” she finished quietly.
“You were a hero,” he breathed out, barely above a whisper.
“I was,” she confirmed again with a slight laugh.  He had the most adorable gob smacked expression on his face like it was the last thing he would have ever thought, which, with the magic glamour, might be the truth.
“Oh my God!” He slapped his forehead and fell onto the bed next to her.  “I was wearing a Ladybug shirt when we first met.  You were wearing a Nightwing shirt!”
“Yeah,” she giggled.  “You’re where I was a few weeks ago.”
“That’s why Adrien and that… Plagg kept calling you bug. I thought it was because you are so small.” Marinette scowled at him but he was so caught up in the revelations and puzzle pieces finally coming together.  “But that didn’t make sense that Plagg would call you that until now.”
He turned to her, a glint of awe in his eyes.  “I remember seeing video of you in action.  I checked out Ladybug and Chat Noir after you mentioned them when we first started dating.  You were amazing.”
“Thank you,” she bowed her head graciously.
“I mean you still are.  I didn’t think I could think you were any more amazing than I already did, but you were so impressive in action.  Your moves and your confidence, your compassion and your creativity.”  He looked away to process the new information and come to grips with his newfound admiration.  He thought through some of the fights he’d seen footage of, some of the moves he remembered.  She had been absolutely amazing.  Everything he admired about Marinette but amplified because of the extreme situations. He shook his head at the fights he remembered until one of them caught in his head.  One incredulous, ridiculous, asinine move.  “You jumped into a dinosaur’s mouth!”
“I… did,” she grimaced at the reminder.  Not her best moment, but it worked.
“Oh God.  No wonder you and Jason hit it off so well.” He shook his head at the thought of the two of them fighting together.  Jumping into a situation relying on luck and determination to get them through.  They would fit far too easily together in a fight.  “Oh my God, the rest of the family is going to go insane when they find out.  Wait,” he looked over to her with a questioning look, “were you planning on telling them?”
“I… hadn’t decided yet, but I don’t think so.  I thought I might eventually tell them about being Multimouse or the dragon, but not about Ladybug.”  Dick frowned slightly.  If anyone could understand being a hero and weighing normal life with that life, it was them.  They could understand her in a way few others could.  “It isn’t that I don’t love them and trust them it’s just… you know our villain, Hawkmoth?  He wanted our miraculous because combined, it gave him a wish.  One wish that could rewrite reality.  Could destroy a continent, or a planet, could bring perpetual wealth, or health, could make one immortal or bring someone back from the dead, but at a cosmic price.  I just… I don’t know.  If your brothers knew of that power.  If your brothers lost someone and knew all they had to do to get them back was take the jewels and make a wish, but if they did there would be a price.  Do you think they would restrain themselves?  Or do you think they would find a way to sneak them away from me and Adrien to make the wish, whatever the consequences?”
Dick stared at her, a concerned frown on his face. She was right.  He knew she was.  If they lost Bruce again, he had no doubt Damian would do anything to bring him back.  If Tim ever lost Kon…  If any of them had a child that was lost…  He massaged his forehead trying to ward off the migraine he knew wanted to start with all this new information bombarding his brain.
“That’s why I took so long to tell you.  There’s so much damage that can be done.  I’ve never… we’ve never… neither of us has ever told anyone else.  The core members of our team know, but nobody else.  There’s six people in the universe who know who we are… now seven.”  She looked at him gravely.
He took a few deep breaths and eyed her apprehensively, letting the seriousness of the situation settle over him.  Finally he nodded in agreement.  “So we don’t tell the family.  Is there more I should know?”
“If we’re going to stay together, yes.  But I don’t know if I’m ready to go there yet.  Things only Chat… Adrien knows.”  She studied him carefully for a moment before one side of her mouth quirked up a bit.  “I’ve had it drilled so thoroughly into my head that I can’t let anyone know, it feels strange to be able to be honest with someone else.  I’m glad you know.”
“I’m glad I know too.” He moved closer to her and cupped her face, gently stroking her cheek.  “I can’t wait until we both know all of each other’s secrets,” he whispered, slowly leaning toward her.
Marinette smiled.  “You have more secrets to tell,” she whispered back with a teasing smile.
“So many.” He nodded, his eyes focused entirely on her lips as he leaned closer still.  “I’ll make some up if I have to.”  He smirked at her eye roll.  He was close enough now that he could feel her breath fanning out across his face and she wasn’t backing away.  She wasn’t pushing him for space and that fact alone was making his heart soar.
He was just about to close the gap when she quirked her head to the side and sighed.  “That sounds like Lucy, which means Rob will be up too.”  She gave him an apologetic smile and moved to go nurse them.
Dick let out an exaggerated sigh and fell back on the bed. He suddenly shot up as a thought occurred to him.  “He knew I was Nightwing and Jason is Hood when he suggested the nickname for Rob.”
Marinette laughed at the offended look on his face. “Oh, definitely.”
“That bastard.  I’ll show him.  I’ll introduce him to Wally as a punishment.  He’ll never be able to get another word in again.  Hey, wait up.”  He jumped up and rushed over to her, slinging his arm around her waist and planting a kiss on her temple.  “I’ll change their diapers for you.”

The Lord of the Rings as a Sequel to The Silmarillion (Part 1)
In one of his letters, Tolkien writes, “it is not really a sequel to The Hobbit, but to The Silmarillion.” I think it would be interesting to go through The Silmarillion and try to piece together the different ways in which The Lord of the Rings can be considered as a sequel to it, in terms of themes, motifs, characters, and plot elements.
But when I start at the beginning of the major events of the core Silmarillion, with the Return of the Noldor, the first pattern I find is The Hobbit as a Sequel to The Silmarillion.
Some of the similarities between the works are already thoroughly observered and discussed within the fandom: setting out on a quest against a dangerous, evil enemy with the aim both of taking vengeance for the death of family and recovering stolen treasure. Thorin and Fëanor likewise have. lear similarities, in pride, determination, self-will, and ultimately an obsession with a particular treasure that overpowers all other goals. And The Hobbit comes very close to a kinslaying at the end! I do not think the Arkenstone is a Silmaril; I think that Tolkien had the general concepts around The Silmarillion in his head, though, when he wrote The Hobbit, and presented some similar ideas there in a different form.
What really strikes me about the resemblances, though, is one key difference. In The Silmarillion, the Valar seek to dissuade Fëanor from pursuing Morgoth, from returning to Middle-earth in a quest for vengeance and lost treasure. In The Hobbit (or rather, as later described by Tolkien in Unfinished Tales), Gandalf - as near as one can get in Third Age Middle-earth to a representative of the Valar, and enturely familiar with the events of the First Age - actively encourages Thorin on his quest against Smaug:
Gandalf: I soon understood that [Thorin’s] heart was hot with brooding on his wrongs, and the loss of the treasure of his forefathers, and burdened too with the duty of revenge upon Smaug that he had inherited. Dwarves take such duties very seriously. [This too is quite Fëanorian - at Fëanor’s death “he laid it upon his sons to avenge their father”.] I promised to help him if I could. I was as eager as he was to see the end of Smaug. [Gandalf was concerned with the possibility of Sauron using Smaug against Rivendell.]
Gandalf advises Thorin - rather vehemently - on methods (a secret mission rather than open war), but he is very much in favour of the Quest. This support is in spite of his understanding of the danger presented by Thorin’s character flaws: “Curb your pride and your greed, or you will fall at the end of whatever path you take, though your hands be full of gold.”
This difference between the Valar and Gandalf, when confronted with a prideful, headstrong individual determined to take on a foe well out of his weight class in a quest for vengeance and treasure, strikes me as quite crucial:
The Valar: Absolutely don’t do that, it’s going to be a disaster and you have no chance of success. We won’t get in your way, but we think it’s a terrible idea.
Fëanor: Yeah, well, screw you, at least I’m not doing nothing, and I’m tougher than you think.
———-
Gandalf: Yes, go for it, I’ll help if I can. Take along this hobbit.
Thorin:…He seems pretty useless.
Gandalf: It is critically important that you take along this hobbit, and you’ll get no help from me if you don’t.
Thorin:…Fine. You’re coming along to babysit him, though.
The Third Age is after Valinor has been removed from the Circles of the World, when the Powers (or their representatives, like Gandalf) need to work with the Children of Ilúvatar, not on their behalf. Gandalf has no choice but to take risks, because he lacks the ability to fix everything by himself; that is, really, the very point of the Istari, that they are there to guide and support rather than to fix everything.
And the risk he takes here is a terrible one, and it very nearly goes terribly wrong. If not for the sudden arrival of an army of Orcs at the Lonely Mountain, it is very possible that his encouragement of the Quest would have resulted in the first Kinslaying (if we’re going to count a battle between broadly anti-Sauron Elves, Dwarves, and Men as a Kinslaying, which I do) in several thousand years. And he knows that Thorin has the kind of character flaws that make this dangerous - he tells Thorin so! And he knows about the Arkenstone. From one perspective, he’s gambling not just with the lives of Thorin & Company, but with Thorin’s soul. (I think this would be Elrond’s perspective, due to having had a front-row seat in the First Age to just how badly such things can go, and I imagine that the whole incident resulted in probably the most heated discussion/argument that Gandalf and Elrond ever had, after Gandalf and Bilbo got back to Rivendell. I don’t think Elrond had, necessarily, all the same context on the Quest and on Thorin’s personality as Gandalf did when Thorin & Co stopped at Rivendell.) From another perspective, Gandalf is respecting Thorin’s free will and the decision that Thorin has already made to go after Smaug, and is doing his best to provide advice and help to improve the chances that things go well. But there are no guarantees that things will go right.

Modern Inheritance: Father and Son (Ask Fill)
Anonymous asked: When does Eragon discover that Brom’s his father?
“He said that Morzan is my father.”
The silence that filled the tent made Eragon’s chest ache more than any of the injuries that now littered his body. Saphira reached out to him, trying to comfort the hurt, but he recoiled. This was his burden to carry, and he’d carry it alone.
Nasuada stared with her lips parted, hanging on the edge of saying something but seeming unable to decide what would be the best response.
Roran’s face was frozen in shock, but a familiar flush was creeping up his neck that signaled he was about to explode to Eragon’s defense like he would when they were children and the other kids mocked his lack of parentage.
For once, Eragon just wanted his cousin to stay quiet as he turned his gaze to Arya, trying to gauge her reaction. He didn’t know what he wanted to see. Disgust? Pity? Sympathy?
Her eyes were wide and a mix of gobsmacked surprise and…was that apprehension?…colored her expression.
But Arya wasn’t looking at him.
The elf was looking at Brom.
And the tent exploded into noise once again.
“HE SAID WHAT?!”
Eragon staggered as Brom rushed him, a wild light in his eyes as he shoved Roran aside and seized the young Rider by his upper arms. “You believed him?!” He could feel the man’s muscles trembling with rage even as he shook Eragon roughly. “How could a monster like Morzan spawn a man like you?!”
Out the corner of his eye Eragon saw Roran already regaining his feet as Arya vaulted clear across the staging table to get to his side. The elf was millimeters away from yanking the enraged Rider off when Brom suddenly stopped shaking the young man and locked eyes with him.
“You’re MY son, dammit!”
Eragon’s hammering heart juddered to a stop.
“You’ve always been my son.”
Brom’s chest heaved as Arya pulled him away from the shellshocked Eragon. She was watching him now, looking for any hint as to how the younger Rider wanted to proceed. She released her grip on Brom and stepped back when Eragon gave her a shaky nod before turning to Nasuada.
Eragon bowed. He hoped that the stiffness of his stance hid the trembling of his limbs.
“If you’ll excuse us for a moment.”
With that he grabbed Brom by the shoulder of his armored coat and dragged him out of the tent, leaving a stumbled trail of burnt and broken soil crust in their wake.
~
Eragon didn’t stop until he, Brom and Saphira were far enough from the command tent to cast deafening wards on their conversation. The moment they were in place the younger man rounded on the elder.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Brom flinched. There was so much emotion in Eragon’s voice, a terrible mix of anger and betrayal that nearly masked the undercurrent of confusion and hurt. The sound made him want to throw his arms around the boy. He held back, knowing that right now, Eragon wasn’t ready. He wanted answers, and Brom would do his best to give them.
So he took a deep breath. “I couldn’t. If word reached the wrong ears that you were my son it would have put you in so much danger. I wanted you to grow up with a family that could give you a normal life, not force you to live every day in fear that the King would one day discover us.” Unable to stop himself, Brom reached out to put his hands on the furious young man’s shoulders. “Eragon, I wanted to protect you–”
Eragon gnashed his teeth and shoved Brom’s hands away. “But that was THEN! Did you ever stop to think maybe, once we all were already running from Galbatorix, to tell me who you were? The whole time we traveled, you never ONCE gave us an inkling–”
‘He told me, Little One.’ Saphira lowered her head to her partner. Eragon stared at her with shock. ‘I’m sorry. I wanted so badly to tell you, but before he told me anything Brom made me swear oaths to keep it secret unless absolutely necessary.’ She brushed her snout against his arm. ‘I’m sorry.’
Saphira could feel him wrestling with the revelation, the twinges of betrayal and questions of who he could trust if not her to share everything. Her own regret and shame at being locked in her promise seeped across their link, and with a pang of guilt Eragon’s thoughts came to clarity. She had wanted to tell him, and would have if she could. She was not to blame for this.
“That was wrong of me.” Brom bowed his head. “I shouldn’t have burdened you with this, Saphira, especially under such oaths. I…I wanted at least someone to be able to tell Eragon if I–” He stopped. “I’m sorry.”
“That doesn’t–” Eragon cut himself off, the cauldron of emotions inside him boiling over. All his life, he wondered who his father was. He loved his family, Garrow, Roran, Marian, but there was something inside that he always craved. And now, to know he had been denied it when it was right there, so close to him this whole time….
He exploded.
“Even in Ellesméra, probably the safest place in all Alagaësia, you didn’t tell me!” Eragon jabbed a finger into Brom’s chest, nearly staggering the older man with his new strength. “I can’t believe you! Tell me, if Murtagh hadn’t assumed I was Morzan’s blood too, were you ever going to claim me as your son?! What, were you too ashamed of me while Durza’s scar made me an in–”
And suddenly arms were around him, squeezing tight. The familiar scent of sweet tobacco smoke, warm canvas, leather and sandalwood washed through Eragon’s senses. It evoked memories of their travels, of the nights spent at the campfire learning magic and swordplay.
But even deeper still, lost in the reaches of his oldest memories, the feeling of Brom’s arms around him recalled the days spent in the storyteller’s tiny home while Garrow and Marian worked the fields. His patience with Eragon’s neverending questions. How, without him knowing it, Brom made sure his son was fed, sparked his interest in the world around him, did his best to guide him on difficult choices. How the old man always made sure his door was open to him, for advice, stories, or simply someone to sit with in troubled times.
He realized, then, that Brom was shaking as he tightened his grip on his son. Hot tears splashed on the shoulders of his armor, beading up on the aramid polymer.
“Stars above, I’ve never been ashamed of you.” Brom shuddered in a gasp, then let words pent up for years pour out of him. “You’ve always been my son, Eragon. I was so afraid that…that I would lose you too. I don’t know a thing about being a father, and after all that I’ve done and all I lost I just…I couldn’t. I couldn’t let that touch you.
“I wanted more than anything to tell you. I was just too damn scared. I’m so sorry. There’s nothing I can do to make up for the past, but–”
Brom froze.
Eragon settled his arms around his father, and hugged him back.
He could feel his own throat tightening as he spoke, voice free from the conflict that it was filled with before. “You dummy.” Eragon felt Brom break out into fresh tears of relief as he added, “You realize you’re everything I wanted in a dad, right?”

Wip Re-Introduction: A Rope In Hand
❛Horror is like a serpent; always shedding its skin, always changing. And it will always come back. It can’t be hidden away like the guilty secrets we try to keep in our subconscious.❜
♧ Title: A Rope In Hand [ARIH]
♧ Status: First Drafting
♧ Point of View: Third Person, flexible between a few
♧ Genre: Dark Fantasy, Supernatural, LGBTQ+, Action, Drama
♧ Warnings: This story revolves around the occult. There will be talk of witch hunts and trials and cults. There will be torture methods used to gain confessions, and these methods will be justified under religious belief. There will be toxic and abusive relationships, particularly family; finding an escape from them, and healing from the trauma. There will be homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, and colonization. There will be major character deaths, but I can spoil after the book ends the main characters do get a happy ending. Each chapter and scene posted will have personalized warnings, but these are the main things to expect.
♧ Featuring: The majority of the characters will be LGBTQ+, from pansexual, homosexual, to asexual; genderfluid, agender/nonbinary, and transgender. Each character is complex and morally grey. Yes, they will do things that are blatantly terrible, or actively good. Overall, they will be morally grey and questionable at best. There will be complex world-building, from both the universe it takes place in, and the religious pantheons brought up. The religions brought up will be polytheistic and animism-themed. The romance between the major characters will be slow-burn enemies to friend to lovers, and them learning to love themselves through one another. There will be an exploration on generational healing, and unlearning toxic, and bias believes.
♧ Setting: The setting is influenced by Victorian London, and Medieval Ireland. There will be mention of other places, primarily western Europe, the Ottoman Empire, Ancient Rome, Eastern Asia, and Napoleonic France.
♧ Synopsis:
In the town of Arkaley, in the northwest of the Duchy of Ruairc, the people have been plagued by bad fortune and crime. Attacks of bandits on the road, raids from pirates on the shores, untimely deaths of children and young women, elected officials coming out corrupt; there is no end in Arkaley of the suffering the locals endure.
Rationally, to explain such a bad string of luck, there is only one possible explanation: Witchcraft.
The Duchy of Ruairc already has a history of witchcraft: the Ó Ruaircs turned out to be witches, the Abondé incident in Salem, the Liathain incident in Trakee; the Ruaircs have their record. Perfectly acceptable for everyone to assume the worse of the Ruairish, as they have proved to be nothing but.
To prove his worth, the young Reverend Prudence Clemency Frye, takes up the task of quelling this coven of witches and heading this witch-hunt. Young and naïve, witch only knowledge from books and little hands-on experience, he’s unprepared for this challenge. When he finally leaves the town, well… everyone would rather put this incident behind them.
♧ Tease:
My darling dear, a knave so clear
You appear, so bravely near;
Do you hear my darling dear, sneers of austere jeers?
Behave, my dear, when I am near;
For peers will lear, in their fear,
Allow me o' dear our persevere
So my fave you appear
And volunteer a slave so dear
in an atmosphere we fear.
my darling dear, wave so clear
Depravely as we leave, and give a souvenir;
My lips to yours, as you crave in these fallin' years.
Be brave darling dear, and give into hearts o' queer.
For mine you be, your darling dear,
To the stars you have swore in love, so crystal clear.
My peers shall sneer, but whore I be, and you I crave
Oh so bare. slurs and glares, just listen to my prayers.
Kiss me love, and leave o'they to a'crave
In this atmosphere that we fear
Their own, o' pure, knave so dear.
♧ Excerpt:
".... This is wrong." Prudence finds the words slipping from his lips, voice a quiet whisper; a breathless tone of voice. He allows his fingertips to falter against scarred skin, watching as Mastema turned his cheek, he pressed himself into the palm of Prudence's hand. Eyes closed, a smile curled on his face. Prudence couldn't help but smile at the scene, but slowly, slowly, slowly, he rescinded his hand; breaking the hold.
"Revered..." Matching his voice, Mastema replied. Maintaining such a soft voice, as he shifted himself forward on the bed. One foot to the ground, the other drawn beneath himself. Over Prudence he leaned, resting one palm to the sheets, the other lifting to seize Prudence's hand before he could recoil back. "You have made me feel something in which I've never felt before..."
From where he laid, Prudence could only form a soft frown. He knew he could draw his hand back, the grip was far from tight. But he didn't. He laid there, allowing Mastema to hold his hand. "... This is wrong, Mastema."
Mastema frowned; he matched the reaction Prudence wore. Through it, he forced a half-smile, tightening his grip on the other's hand, and forward he brought Prudence's hands to kiss the knuckles. "... If this is wrong, I do not wish to be right."
At the response, Prudence shook his head. "It is not for us to be right or wrong, the gods—"
At the angle he sat, Mastema shifted once more. He dropped Prudence's hand, to lean forward; to lean in close. Both of his palms found the other's cheek, as he touched their foreheads to one another. "... Do not force your will onto another." In that soft whisper, he spoke. Eyes closed, breath drawn in. "Is that not a Commandment of our Creator?"
"I..." Prudence faltered. In, he drew his breath, to try to steady himself. "... I did not take you for the religious sorts."
"I'm not." Mastema all too quickly retorted. But as he was, he laid; this proximity. "But you are."
♧ Characters:
The Order of Witchesbane
Prudence Clemency Frye; The Reverend
Half Fae/Half Human • Intersex • Genderfluid • He/They • Homosexual • Homo-demiromantic
The bastard son of Lord Zachariah Frye. Raised by his father, with his mother dying young, he took to following in his footsteps. He became a religious young man and an active witch-hunter. A part of him desires his father’s acceptance, his praises; the other part despises his father and everything the man stands for. In recent years, he has joined the De La Cruz household, becoming an apprentice beneath the famous Witch’s Advocate; upholding the beliefs that not every witch is evil and has foul intentions, and the ones that mean harm are the only ones that should be hunted.
Zachariah Frye; The Bloodhound
Human • Male • He/Him • Bicurious • Aromantic
The oldest living member of the Order. Now he is the man that holds the face of the Order, who you think of when they come to mind. Cold. Vindictive. Despotic. Violent. He is not a good man. He is firm in his beliefs and stubborn to change. Once his mind is made up, he cannot be reasoned with. He is blindly convinced of his beliefs and his cause to eradicate every living witch, unfazed if he has to fill a few innocent thousands in the process.
Calisto Ferzan Hermengildo Melchior Lorencio De La Cruz; The Witch’s Advocate
Half Fae/Half Human • Amab • Nonbinary • Genderfluid • He/They • Asexual • Aromantic
A witch-hunter in title alone, Calisto has been making enemies since he could first talk. He’s always enjoyed being the underdog, going against the expectations of society, being ridiculed by his peers. The sole reason? Proving them wrong. To ridicule his own peers for their outdated beliefs, he’s taken to defending witches, proving them innocent of their ‘crimes’, and going on to help them to set up a life in a country more accepting of witchcraft
The servant of Calisto, never seen far from his side. He is a servant in name alone and is more-or-less an assassin, a hitman for Calisto. Held in contempt by Athylian society for being a foreigner, he often treated by others more as a slave than a servant. To help be unseen, to help the De La Cruz Household, Michelotto endures the treatment and goes as far to be perceived as ignorant, alongside him being born a mute. Keeping his true intents and intelligence duly guarded, only a handful are aware he is also a witch.
Myk'loumihr [Michelotto Dougal] Siavash; The Man-Servant
Witch; Amab • Agender • He/They • Asexual • Aromantic
Austin Duvine; The Lord Without A Ring
Half-Human/Half Fae • Amab • Nonbinary • He/They • Pansexual • Demiromantic
One of the younger members of the order, Austin relies on his father's wealth and name. He doesn't care for responsibilities, he doesn't care for hard work. He's a playboy at heart. He's fit to hold social events, and use his natural talent to gib and fib his way through life. He'll keep his mixed feelings to himself, struggling with doing the right thing or upholding tradition.
Alistair Lavine; The Witchfinder General
Human • Amab • Agender • He/They • Bicurious • Aromantic
The best friend to Zachariah and his right hand. Where Zachariah is business and lacks charms, Alistair can charm a crowd and hold their attention. He knows how to feign being an ideal human, without letting on his own bloodlust; he's a monster in human skin. At the end of the day, unlike Zachariah, Alistair does have morals and standards he will abide by, even if they come back to ruin him.

Liannah is a woman with a calm demeanor about her, being a woman many are comfortable around due to her peaceful and calm aura.

Ausrine's bastard son she had with a spirit she bargained with for more power. Since he was young, he was raised by the servants of the house, and the coven, over his own mother; the two have more of a business relationship over a family one. Since he cares less about what his mother does, he spends his time with Liannah and Reyes, either at the bakery or getting into trouble somewhere. With Reyes as an influence, Mastema is a flirtatious man that enjoys scandals and making the most of life

A foreigner to the Coven, born and raised in the Duchy of Incali. At a young age, he became a traveling charlatan, recently settling within the coven only as he befriended Liannah and Mastema and enjoyed their company. Now, he is the local bad influence: scamming locals out of their money at the taverns, wooing and seducing young men and ladies alike, always trespassing and vandalizing something. He is trouble but has a heart of gold when it matters.
