April 28, 2020 - dreams of writing a book

My ultimate dream is to write a book of essays.

I know I know. I hear you. “Omg another book of essays?” Who are you? Why the hell would we pay to read that book? 1 million people have already read that book.

It’s hard to defend something that I still have not done either. But all I say again to this voice is “SHUT THE FUCK UP!” I WANT TO WRITE A BOOK OF ESSAYS. PERIOD.

Maybe I want to simply share my experience - the monumental experiences that I feel were relevant to me and might be for other people.

----> biggest impetus for this is my father’s recent death. Nobody told me what grieving is. And here I am try as I might reading all the things that I could read about it, but truth be told I want to hear personal stories of what people actually go through when it happened to them. And we can’t have enough of these stories I think. 

It’s hard to be an adult. It’s hard to grow up. It’s hard to realize over and over again that life is unfair. What are the tools? Just stories. Stories are helpful? Question mark?

----> I also want to create an essay about that time my boyfriend cheated on me and the fact that I caught him red-handed. That was another life lesson nobody told me about at that time, that hello, boyfriends cheat, couples break-up. Big deal. Well at that time I thought it was a big deal. I went into depression. I couldn’t hold my job for another day. I cried every minute at work. I quit. Forgot about a whole one year. One year I was so depressed because I thought this was something that only happened to me. Just me.

----> Being a loser. I did not graduate up until I was 30. Yup. That’s me. But my main takeaway from that thing was that I was so proud of myself. So proud that I was able to push through after a gazillion attempts and the embarrassment to still continue even if no one feels like i can do it (at least to those who actually did not matter) and to me as well. I thought I could never do it.

----> My battle with anxiety, especially health anxiety. What it felt like to have this on and off thing about anxiety. I was never diagnosed but I’ve always had it since that day I first experienced a panic attack.

----> I also want to write about my mother. What it motherhood means to me. The relationship I have with my mother, and this preconceived notion I have about the special love-hate bond between mother.

So far that’s all I can think of. Let me list all the books I want to emulate. First stop Meghan Daum.

Sopot. Poland. Picture this house right after the war. The pain is fresh and the roof tiles are still intact. Everyone is working to get past the devastation. The garden has been weeded and there is a vegetable patch just to the right. Where the current fence stands there was once a low wall, just wide enough for a kid to run across it. In fact, the wall wraps around the entire neighbourhood and if you are really careful or very daring, you can hit up everyone's fruit trees without your feet ever touching the ground.  Do you hear them? Shhh.... Listen. There, off in the distance the hysterical laughter of young boys who have been stealing their neighbour's apples. As they scamper off to enjoy their haul, she comes running out shaking her fist but with a smile playing on her worn face.
