Writing is Hard

When I first started writing for The CP Diary 13 years ago, it was a completely different world. It was easier to write about my thoughts and feelings and to introduce different topics to my blog so that my blog could appeal to a wider audience.

Life felt easier

Our lives were easier. The external influences were different. Politics was different. It didn't feel exhausting all the time. My life was easier. Over the years, the feedback for my blog has been immeasurable. I am grateful for such wonderful, positive feedback.

Writing in 2023 is hard

But the world has changed, life has become more difficult and writing in 2023 has become hard, it's easier to have the truth picked apart and scrutinised. Writing the facts and the truth is never easy, I write both and it's uncomfortable.

I appreciate it's difficult for readers to read the facts, particularly around the external influences I talk about, but the facts are important because they shape our future. It is important to keep reading.

Insight

We have insight and insight is important because it helps us to change the way we perceive our world and our decisions. My writing mirrors the universal truths, which affect us all. I keep going because it's good for my mental health.

Good people meeting with bad luck The 60 million dollar question. I'm putting it out there, because it's already out there. Why is it that bad people seem to come off well and good people who tell the truth, struggle with endless bad luck and I include myself here? In 2023, the good people are having their voices drowned out.

Why are good people having their voices drowned out? My own thinking is good people are being penalised, because being bad, immoral, is more on the rise. You're seeing it play out on centre stage, in politics.

Politicians are failing to be open, honest and transparent If you look at what's happening in politics, politicians are not being open, honest and transparent on how they go about their political life, their decisions, but one thing is clear, their decisions are having a negative effect on our lives and our lives are now the poorer for it.

Then comes my Read to Write time of the day. This is a time set for reads that directly discuss writing itself. Or publishing. Or editing. Or.... Things like that. The purely non-fiction side of it all for sure. Reading to write is a huge tool in the writer's top box. I see so many writers who want to make a career of writing but don't do the leg work. Which is in most need, actual writing. But learning is always a part of it and as a full time writer a variety of reading is a large part. I'm always learning or refreshing or going over something. These days writers have to have a "platform" so there is reading about how to on a wide range of subject here. Much of my reading is from various online sources and I have a gazillion reads on my Nook and Prime. But I also have a cabinet full of books in my "tool box". Blogging is something I've dabbled in, inconsistently, since 2001. As a writer I have certain reasons to do this but I also really enjoy it. It's such an outlet. But it's a forever learning curve. 3 Easy Steps to Build Your Author Platform: Part 1

Leverage. We've all heard the word, but what is it? You might think of it in vague terms as a scary word used by sinister men in boardrooms, but it's actually a skill all writers need to be successful.

We're writers. We write. Fiction or Non-, long or short, it's all the same. We begin with one skill set: our passion for writing books. That's an awesome place to start because it creates our primary product—but it's not enough.

Harnessing the Power of Social Media

Now we know how leverage works, it's time to apply it in 3 easy steps:

To be a successful author, you must leverage your skill for writing books to writing for social media (such as blogging and tweeting). Doing this builds your author platform, which grabs more fans and sells more books.

Each new project is another opportunity to leverage yourself. You'll put your existing skill sets (as an author, blogger, tweeter, etc.) to work, ensuring your next project is a hit, and the one after that.

Every time you need to switch gears (say, changing genres, using a new but-not-so-secret pen name, or jumping categories from fiction to non-fiction or YA to adult), that involves leveraging too.

Let's go back to Chris Brogan and Julien Smith's Trust Agents for an example:

"Celebrities use leverage all the time. Robert Downey Jr. staged one of the biggest comebacks in entertainment history with his role as Tony Stark in the 2008 hit, Iron Man . . . He went right from that film to the reasonably successful Tropic Thunder, then to The Soloist, and on to Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes."

The authors go on to say that:

"The star's success in one film can be leveraged to land another, which shows his consistent star power, which in turn allows him even further leverage. He withdraws some equity from the roles he's successfully completed and utilizes it in future products."

If you've done the work and established yourself as a proven "thought leader" in your industry (another reason to use social media), then the transition should be far easier and your success more certain. Not every project will be a hit, of course, but it doesn't need to be—as long as you're doing good work and stay focused on the positive.

Go easy on yourself. You can't build your platform overnight. Keep writing, keep blogging and tweeting. Keep adding value to your brand. Remember, YOU are the only limit to what you can achieve!
