What is Quark?

When I relocated to Germany from Australia 10 years ago I was immediately given a mission to go to a local supermarket and buy a few items. I thought it would be a simple enough first task in a foreign land. As a man in his early 30’s with a fair amount of life experience behind him, surely I could handle it. The third item scrawled on the list was ‘Quark’. I’d never seen or heard the word. Usually I would ask for assistance but I couldn’t do that either so I stood in front of the fridges and stared blankly at an infinite assortment of dairy products. There nestled somewhere between the cheese and milk, lit by a light form the heavens, was a mysterious tub of Quark. I opened the door slowly, held it in front of my eyes and wondered WTFit was. Was it yoghurt, cream or something in between? This was my introduction into a ‘culture’ that was opposite to my own and nothing would ever be the same.

Since that first treacherous outing it has been 10 years on the ground and rarely has a day gone by where I haven’t balls’d something up in the bakery and some moments have been tougher than a World War 2 tank (I honestly didn’t expect to mention the war this early). Whether it be the daily failure in attempting the language, the continual WTF moments or the shit-show that is navigating the supermarket, one thing is for certain, life as an international is character building and once we cross that threshold there is no turning back. Whether you’re a Swede in Sunderland or a Dane in Detroit I would like to offer my observations, anecdotes and learnings in the hope we can find some universal commonalities and truths together and perhaps be stronger together for it. I’d be honoured if you would join me on my misadventures as my quest to find out what Quark is continues…
