Betrayed.
Tumblr media
“I can’t stand him!” Y/N exclaimed, throwing a fit while walking with her best friend, Jaime Reyes. Her anger made her walk faster, making Jaime chase after her. It all started when Jaime noticed Y/N distancing herself from him and he asked why, she said it was nothing and just to mind his own business. During their gym class, Jaime noticed how violet Y/N was when playing a dodgeball match but he couldn’t help to notice how her arm was bruised. He also wondered how she was able to throw and dodge a ball like that. That bruise made him realize that it was the same spot where he hit a specific villain last night. The thought of his best friend being a villain hurts him. He tried removing the thought but it just came back every time he tried to shake it off. After school and on his way home, he spotted Y/N and decided to walk up to her.
“I know you probably don’t wanna talk about your problems right now but ya’know I’m here for you…” Jaime suggested with a soft smile. Y/N turned to him with a dull expression and kept moving forward. Jaime once again followed up in front of her, “Can I at least walk with you? I do feel bad and I can’t stand to see you like this” Jaime pleaded, making Y/N give in. She nodded and the two started walking to the local 7-11 store. On their way, Y/N randomly blurted out “I can’t stand him!” and started marching towards the store angrily. Jaime followed up, hoping to hear more about this mystery guy. “Who? Who’s bothering you?” Jaime asked. Y/N scoffed as she opened the store door.
“You don’t know him…” She said, trying to keep her cool. She couldn’t expose herself to a guy who would most likely betray him to the heroes. “At least you can describe him. I’ll get a better idea of who the hell the guy is. If he is that much of a bother to you then I’ll make sure he gets it coming.” Y/N started chuckling, “And what the hell are you gonna do to this guy? But fine. He’s annoying, always on my ass, and doesn’t stop until he gets his way. Which annoys me because he went way too far yesterday.” Jaime stop to think too far? What does she mean too far? She was the one causing harm and trying to poison the water supply. Is it her? Please... Please… tell me that (villain name) isn’t you, Y/N. Jaime then felt Y/N nudge him. She mouthed you okay?  and Jaime nodded. They went inside the store and went to the chip aisle. When reaching for a bag of Takis, the sides of their hands touched each other. The two retracted immediately and looked away embarrassed.
“So…What did he do that was too far?” Jaime asked, trying to change the subject. Y/N grabbed that bag of Takis and walked off to a different aisle. “He- uh… I-I can’t say. Sorry.” Y/N tried to explain but she knew that Jaime wouldn’t believe her. Jaime gave a sympathetic nod. When the two finished paying for their food, they said goodbye and left.
Y/N’s POV
It was very late at night. Almost 4 AM. I had to wait for the perfect time to cause any harm to anyone. Two nights ago, stupid Blue Beetle roundhouse kicked the shit out of me. I thought to myself when I find this bug, I swear I’m going to fucking smash and kill it. As I aggressively put on my suit, a shadowy reflection flew past my window and they left a sticky note on the outside of my window saying “Meet me on top of the xxx building. Rooftop –BB.”  I rushed to my window, opened it, and snatched the sticky note. The writing was in all blue ink. I knew who this was. My heart started beating fast, I felt nauseous and anxious. How was he able to find where I live? Was one of the many questions racing in my mind. I crushed the paper and tossed it over my bed as I finished changing into my suit. I flew out the window and headed towards the address. As I was flying there, I tried to retract where I went wrong and how I blew my cover so easily. Nothing came to mind and while trying to come up with another explanation, I had already arrived. There was a figure lurking in the shadows, eyeing me down as I landed on the rooftop of the building.
“Come out, Beetle. I see you in the shadows. Hey, if you were a Shadow then you wouldn’t even make it out of Santa Prisca alive. Your dumb blue armor gives you away” I teased, crossing my arms as Blue Beetle slowly came into the light. I glared into his eyes and stepped closer. Pulling out (some type of weapon) out and pointing towards him. “How did you find me? How did you find where I live?” Blue Beetle didn’t answer but he simply just stepped forward. “Y/n…” Beetle murmured. Y/n? What the fuck? How did he know? I stood there in silence. He walked closer, closer, and closer, but I didn’t move a muscle. Now he was in front of me. I looked down at the rooftop floor while feeling Blue Beetle’s hand reach for my arm. I looked up at him and snarled.“Don’t touch me.” He immediately let go and sighed.
“Why Y/n? Why would you go through this path? You know better than this.”  He said, trying to get an answer from me. I knew better than to answer. After all, anything I say can and will go against me.  As I was still glaring into his eyes, his face armor started to retract back to his suit. I broke eye contact and turned my head away, refusing to lock eyes with him. No, no, no…not him. Not him!  My head started to get foggy and blank. I felt nauseous and took a few steps back. I couldn’t believe that the boy that I cared for, my best friend, Jaime Reyes, is a fucking traitor and gave me that awful beating two nights ago.  “Look Y/n, can we please talk about this? Please just hear me out.” I ignored his suggestion. Still not looking at him. I was angry, betrayed, and sad. Tears wanted to come out of my eyes but I held back. With a sour look on my face, I gazed into Jaime’s eyes and mouthed “I’m sorry”  He looked at me with confusion. “I’m sorry? Sorry for what?” he asked, looking at me like a pathetic pleasing bitch. I shook my head repetitively and walked towards the edge of the rooftop. I leaped off of it, disappearing and never to be seen again.
Jaime’s POV:
I rushed after Y/N when I saw her leap off the edge of the rooftop but when I tried looking for her, she was nowhere to be seen. I attached my face armor back and flew back home. As I was flying back, I kept thinking to myself What does she mean when she said she’s sorry? What was she sorry for? Days went on and I haven’t seen Y/N attack since. Which is probably a good thing but she wasn’t at school either. It’s like she disappeared from the face of Earth. A few months went by and I still haven’t seen Y/N at all! I asked around at school such as Paco, Brenda, and the staff but they haven’t seen her. I talked to the principal but I didn’t get much from him. The only thing I got from him was that Y/N is no longer in their school system.
When I was dismissed from school, Brenda and Paco both offered to walk me home but I declined. Once I got home, I didn’t even think of patrolling for the night. I just wanted to rest. I can’t help the feeling but I miss Y/N.
I woke up to a crowd outside of my house screaming and yelling but I couldn’t hear anything. My mom rushed into my room screaming into my ear but I couldn’t understand what she was saying for I was still half asleep. She dragged my arm into the living room and turned my attention to the TV. The news reporter was saying something but for some reason, I couldn’t understand what it was that he was saying until I started reading the words that were displayed on the screen. My face froze, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

there are so many great moments in this movie, but my favorites:
- the fact that jaime and the beetle are both like "we are not killers!" meanwhile the entire reyes family is 100% down with murder. Straight up they kill at least 12 people
- jaime, the first on-screen male superhero to canonically have something up his asshole (plot point)
- a joke about jaime's dick size like we don't know xolo mariduena has a baseball bat between his legs
- milagro and the nod towards her being green lantern
- maria del el bairro
- jenny dropping that line in portuguese made my ENTIRE session scream
- chapulin colorado!
- the conclusion of the movie being that the real villain is American power piting latinos against each other
- absolutely hilarious that they didn’t even TRY to make it subtle that they want jason sudeikis to play ted kord. The painting of ted and his family is literally a portrait of jason sudeikis

Metamorphosis of a Hero: Jaime Reyes' Blue Beetle Saga in the DC Universe
Blue Beetle is a very cool character within comics lore. There have been several iterations of the character throughout the years in the comics. This film explores Jaime Reyes as the titular hero.
The first 40 minutes of this movie are superb. Some of the best comic book inspired origin stuff that has ever been adapted to the screen. We get to see the closeness of the Reyes family and their struggle to keep their home. We are introduced to Kord Industries and the Scarab which leads directly into the plot of the movie.
The second and third acts are not as thrilling for a multitude of different reasons. The villains are entirely one dimensional, and there are conveniently placed character developments that come across as cringey. Xolo Mariduena is the best part of the movie. He does play Jaime well as a relatable young man just trying to do right by his family. The rest of the plot feels forced, though. Including his love story with Jenny Kord.
Tumblr media
The suit is definitely on point, which helps the hardcore comic book fan in me enjoy this movie. However, the idea that it took Jaime the entire movie to realize his love for his family is what gives him strength seemed a little bit ridiculous. It didn't come across as motivational like they had hoped but more preachy. It felt like had he not found the Scarab, he never would have learned that lesson. For a Pre-Law graduate, they never presented Jaime as an overally intelligent character with solid intellect.
While this movie does have more positives than negatives, it does suffer from the same thing a lot of DC movies do. It is way too simplistic in nature when it could have tried to do something different. I called the mid credits scene as soon as they found the Kord mansion. There was too much setup for it not to occur. The only question now is, will it go anywhere?
Tumblr media
While I do hope to see this iteration of Jaime again, I do hope it is in a team fashion. There does not seem like a lot of solo avenues they can explore. Jaime has a lot of affiliations with other younger characters in the comics, and that could very well be utilized if we are to see him again. The future is wide open for all DC characters, so we can't quite pinpoint where Blue Beetle will show up next. I do hope all of this was for something as this would be a complete waste of a movie if it didn't go anywhere.

I have a passing knowledge of Jaime Reyes' Blue Beetle from the character's appearance on SMALLVILLE, BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD and these panels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Milagro, you are so real for this.
Tumblr media
And this is where my true knowledge about Blue Beetle comes from - Ted Kord's Blue Beetle and his friendship with Booster Gold.
Blue & Gold Forever.
Tumblr media
So with only knowing the bare minimum about Jaime I was able to watch BLUE BEETLE with no expectations. It's an incredibly vibrant, fun and heartfelt film. I'm concerned at its low box-office showing, but films with bigger leads and bigger budgets have also failed at the box office, or at the very least, didn't recoup it's budget and marketing. There has never been anything that was a guaranteed box office success. I would rather it tried to get eyes in theaters than get lost on HBO Max where it was originally slated for release. Here's hoping National Cinema Day on Aug 27th (where theaters are selling tickets for $4 for all formats) will bring more people to the tent.
Too true.
Tumblr media
My thoughts on BLUE BEETLE
Tumblr media
Nothing but SPOILERS.
Tumblr media
THE GOOD
Xolo Maridueña (COBRA KAI) is a great Jaime. If you have seen Maridueña across these five seasons of COBRA KAI, it's not surprising. He has shown consistently that he can play humour, dutifulness, vulnerable and excel at action.
Big up to COBRA KAI's annual blow-out fight sequence.
youtube
Oddly enough, at the end of the film I didn't think we got to know Jaime beyond a cursory level, but I'm sure if they did a deep dive on him I would complain about that too as my issue with origin story films is that so much real estate is given to building up the history of the character, that the plot and action seems relegated to the final act. But I guess BLUE BEETLE gave us all we need to know about Jaime.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Good egg, duty bound, gets hard from hugs (and kudos to this film for actually having a character who gets horny. Comic book films are nearly always a sexless thing, but my guy Jaime pulling his shirt down to cover his crotch after Jenny's (Bruna Marquezine) tale of woe was refreshing.)
-Really liked Jenny Kord. She wasn't the typical damsel in distress. She's formidable in her own right. She and Jaime doesn't feel rushed or shoehorned in. I especially loved the fact that they didn't just make her the love interest,
Though she and Xolo are great together,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but also gave her - in the Reyes - a new family. If she and Jaime were to go pear-shaped we can just know that Jenny still has a place within the Reyes clan.
-We have not one, but two new members to the Legion of Great DCEU Family Members. Joining the mom and dad of SHAZAM, AQUAMAN's dad, THE FLASH's mom is BLUE BEETLE's Alberto Reyes (Damián Alcázar) and Nana Reyes (the Oscar nominated Adriana Barraza).
Still waters run deep and Nana proved that. She's not just up in her room sewing and watching reruns of "María la del Barrio". She is sitting back waiting to showcase her experiene while fighting in the revolution.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Alberto Reyes! He was this film's King T'Chaka. Always with a wise word, strong, caring. I hate that he had to die and I think it's a worn out trope that a hero has to suffer loss in order to come into their greatness, but it worked. Long Live Alberto Reyes!
Tumblr media
Just enough George Lopez to not be annoying. He's funny, but only in small doses IMO so he was just good enough and used well enough that it wasn't eye-rolling. I really loved that he wasn't just there for the obvious comic relief, instead Uncle Rudy is a brain.
The opening along had me hyped. It set the tone and it lent to idea of the scarab being from space, but the inclusion of a classic Blue Beetle comic sketch just ::chef's kiss:
-Director Ángel Manuel Soto listed which stories he pulled from for this film,
Tumblr media
but I see a lot of BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD episode "Fall of the Blue Beetle" in the bits where they go to Ted Kord's home/lab.
-The way they took OMAC/Kevin Kho backstory and merged it with Carapex's. In the comics OMAC was a Cambodian child of war, in this film Ignacio/Carapex was left an orphan and trained by the School of the Americas (rebranded Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation) whose training manuals advocated tortuing and blackmailing civilians. Using Kord Industries as not just a amorphous shady big tech corp, BLUE BEETLE's writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer and Soto tied Kord Industries to the realties of what big corporations are doing globally.
This ties into another thing I loved about the film - it had a strong cultural identity. From Nana using Vivaporú (Vicks Vapor Rub) as smelling salts to rouse Jamie, to El Chapulín Colorado(!!!).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The idea of gentrification that affects people across colour lines and specifically targets people of lower income.
The full integration of Jaime and Khaji-Da being exemplified by Khaji-Da (voiced by singer/actor Becky G) speaking Spanish.
THE BAD
-Is there someone with less screen prescence than Susan Sarandon? I don't know how she was ever a thing. I guess they needed a "name" but there several other actors like Anjelica Huston or Sigourney Weaver who would have done something more with that role. Carla Gugino. Anyone else!
-The establishing CGI of Kord Entrerprises was basura. There was a tangible change in F/X as if mid way through post-production they found out WB-Discovery was moving it to theatrical release and they effects crew got a cash infusion.
-While I came around on the character towards the end, I wasn't a fan of Milagro. Glad they aged her up but she fell into the trope of annoying movie sibling and it grated.
Tumblr media
THE REST
-Harvey Guillen's character died in the film (good!) and he appears to be dead again on HARLEY QUINN (not good. There is no way Nightwing's death sticks).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-Soto and James Gunn says that Jaime has a future in the DCU. While an interview snippet is making the rounds where Soto says he would like Jason Sudeikis (TED LASSO) to play Ted Kord, I don't really believe that is true as the source is from an online site I'm not familiar with and people lie for clicks.
Yes, Buster. All. The. Time.
Tumblr media
-While comics! Jaime lives in El Paso, Texas, film! Jaime lives in Palmera City - on El Paso St. - which was created for the film (and appeared in the comics months ahead in a tie-in). Soto found inspiration in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico. But I wonder what Palmera City's real-world city will be when James Gunn finishes the DC Map that he say is being redone. Maybe because over the years Metropolis has been Chicago/Delaware/New York.
Metropolis is not in Delaware, GTFOH.

Normal Me: Blue Beetle was a phenomenal movie that was filled with so much love in both the on screen in how the Reyes family comes together and behind screen with the amount of thought put into it's adaptation. It doesn't shy away from important themes or it's cultural significance and the overall plot was just beautiful and-

How I’d structure the “Fantastic Four” MCU trilogy:
(1st movie)
The origin story for both the F4 and Doctor Doom. However, the main villain shouldn’t be Doom, it should be someone major but not too important to stick around. So I picked Galactus’ herald Terrax the Tamer. It’s revealed at the end of the movie, Terrax was sent by Galactus to test Earth’s defenses. Galactus is teased in the post-credits.
(2nd movie)
We have two major plots that are intertwined. The first focuses on Reed and Susan’s romance, which is a “will-they-won’t they” dynamic. It’s complicated when Susan goes missing during an ocean expedition, only to be rescued by Namor. Namor falls for Susan, kicking off a love triangle that gets pretty dramatic.
The second plot is that while the above is happening, Talokan is being attacked/manipulated by an unknown force that is trying to push Namor into declaring war on the surface. So Namor is the central antagonist once again as he’s being pushed into declaring war and is Reed’s main love rival.
Crisis is averted when it’s revealed that Doctor Doom was the true villain/mastermind behind the attacks on Talokan. This leads into a F4-Namor team-up against Doom’s forces. Movie ends with Susan turning Namor down, Namor making his peace with Reed and Susan, and Reed and Susan getting together.
(3rd movie)
Now that Doom has been exposed as the previous movie’s villain, he is now the main villain of this movie. By this point, he’s become the ruler of a new Eastern European country that comprises of the old Sokovia, now named Latveria. His goal is to take down the world’s most powerful countries (namely Wakanda, Talokan) and harness their technology and weapons.
What is Doom’s motivation? To find a way to defeat Galactus. Although the F4 agree that they need to stop Galactus, Doom also has the ulterior motive of taking over the world/turning Latveria into the world’s most powerful country. He’s also destroying two whole civilizations in the process. So, another “ends don’t justify the means” situation.
Doom loses, but is spared because the audience loves Doom (let’s be real here). The F4 must now reform the Avengers in order to stop Galactus. This leads into the new version of Avengers 5 since the Kang arc has been abandoned for now.
Side note: As a build-up to Avengers 5, Franklin Richards (played by Xolo Mariduena) and Valeria Richards arrives from the future to help their parents. Because we can’t do a Fantastic Four movie without some whacky sci-fi shit, okay?

BLUE BEETLE (Minor Spoilers)
I was unsure if I wanted to see “Blue Beetle”. Is it one of the last of the old DCEU movies? Or, as suggested by recent articles, the first of the new DCU films under James Gunn and James Safran.
Well, the movie was green lit by Warner in 2021 to be part of mid-budget films to be released exclusively on HBO Max. But with the regime change… and lucky for it, with Safran as a producer, it got a theatrical release date.
As I’m not a fan of Warner/Gunn’s new direction for DC Comics movies, I hesitated. But because the Blue Beetle features the Jaime Reyes version of the character, Warner’s first Mexican superhero, I felt I should at least see it.
First, does this feel like an introduction to a new DC Universe? Flat out, No. The story is set in a fictional city in the Florida Keys, and except for very minor passing references to Batman, Superman, and the Flash, there is no sense of the outside world and the heroes that might inhabit it. So this movie is largely standalone and could exist in any of DC’s multiverses (included the Arrowverse).
What sets this movie apart from other superhero movies is its focus on “La familia”. We have Jaime, his sister, mom and dad, Uncle Rudy, and Nana the abuelita - and they all love each other very much.
This is both good and bad, because like the Shazam-Family in Zachary Levi’s films, Jaime is never on a solo mission. He has to share a lot of screen time and plot with his family.
As Superhero family go, this one is extraordinary… Tio Rudy (played by George Lopez) is a veritable tech genius (someone actually refers to him as Doc Brown). And Nana? She’s played by well known Mexican actress Adriana Barraza. Her character was once a “revolucionista” who can handle a machine gun twice her size. As I don’t recall any revolutions in Mexico in the past 50+ years, maybe in her youth grandma traveled to Nicaragua in the 1980s to fight with the Contras.
These additions are meant to be playful, but each needs a setup, and an arc and conclusion which make the movie less and less about Jaime.
Xolo Maridueña is charming as Jaime. His devotion to his family is his defining trait. Once the alien scarab takes over his body, he’s constantly trying to stop it from killing anybody. An odd juxtaposition because in Tio Rudy’s and Abuelita’s action scenes, they don’t hesitate killing (remember that machine gun?).
Susan Sarandon plays a generic corporate villain and offers nothing special. Her #1 henchman is played by Raoul Trujillo. He eventually becomes a red version of the Beetle (don’t you hate it when the villain becomes a copy of the hero). He and Jaime have many fight scenes (CGI versus CGI like in the Iron Man movies).
The ending gets bogged down in too many fight scenes:
Jaime’s sister versus generic henchmen
Tio Rudy versus generics henchmen
Abuelita versus generic henchmen
Jaime versus generic henchmen
Jaime versus Raoul Trujillo (twice at the end and at least 4 times across the movie).
In all, I thought “Blue Beetle” was just “okay”. Certainly better than “Quantumania” and “Thor L&T” but not has good as either WW movie or the recent Flash (which I enjoyed quite a bit).
NOTE:The plot references the Golden Age Blue Beetle (Dan Garrett) and the Silver Age version (Ted Kord) but neither appear. But we do get to see Kord’s airship, the Bug, in action.
Post Credit Scenes: Shortly after the credit start, there is a scene referencing Ted Kord. At the very end of the credits, there is another bit that is not worth waiting for (trust me!). And there are NO cameos by any other heroes or actors.
Best Line:
“My name is Sanchez, pendeja!”

Blue Beetle 4K Ultra HD Review
Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) is a recent college graduate who returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Superhero Blue Beetle.
Tumblr media
Maridueña from the hit tv series Cobra Kai again plays a very likeable character here, the only problem is he's surrounded by a cast who are a lot less enjoyable. George Lopez portrays Rudy Reyes, Jaime’s uncle, an eccentric genius of the Reyes family, with a talented mind for technology and drives around in a souped-up Tacoma truck. Somehow, Jaime's uncle, although a technological genius, seems to have never been able to help the Reyes family get out of their financial troubles. Lopez is obviously in place to provide comic relief for this action flick, unfortunately most of his jokes miss the mark. Other members of the Reyes family include the equally annoying Milagro Reyes, Jaime’s sister and Nana, an 80-year-old female Rambo (eye roll). Susan Sarandon portrays a generic power-hungry villain who lends little to this film's plot, with a muscle-bound right-hand man who is the Blue Beetle's physical equal thanks to Sarandon's evil company and wallet.
There's also a force-fed love story between Jamie and Jenny Kord, the daughter of Ted Kord (whose extracurricular pursuits led to the eccentric genius’s mysterious disappearance, leaving his family to pick up the pieces). Jenny is forced to uncover the well-hidden secrets of the Kord family and fearlessly challenge their company, Kord Industries, to do what is right.

VIDEO QUALITY 📽️ :  A-
2160p transfer looks beautiful and the picture is especially nice during the action sequence in which the 4K source material really shines.
AUDIO QUALITY 🔈 : A
The Dolby Atmos mix is even better than the film's video. The sound is bombastic yet crisp.
EXTRAS 📀 :  C
Blue Beetle Generations - Divided into four short and self-explanatory sections, this multi-part promotional piece features interviews with key cast and crew members, behind-the-scenes footage, camera tests, and other items that explore the film's development, shooting, visual FX, costumes, characters, original score, production design, and more. Along with the other two extras, it's not tremendously detailed but very nicely produced with excellent cinematography, slick transition effects, and a 2.39:1 aspect ratio to match the film clips.
Origins (7:28)
Production Begins (16:12)
In Full Flight (9:03)
A Hero's World (13:24)
Scarab Vision (2 clips, 13:25 total) - Two separate scene breakdowns; the first ("Initiation") details Jamie's struggles to control his new superpowers, and the second ("Mastery") focuses on his final showdown.
Blue Beetle's Nana Knows Best (4:21) - A tribute to Jaime's surprisingly badass grandma.
FINAL GRADE: D
I wanted to like this film, but the Blue Beetle is its own worst enemy. Although the visual effects and action sequences are up to par with silver screen blockbusters, the plot, dialogue, and character development are made for tv quality at best.
Blue Beetle is available now at Amazon.

Okay, more Blue Beetle thoughts now that I'm done:
Nana is my favorite family member. All of her stuff was 100x funnier than anything George Lopez did.
On that note, still can't stand Rudy.
I feel like they wasted the dad killing him after only having him in a few scenes. His death might have been more narratively satisfying if he were the one tagging along and not the uncle. The one shot of him with the sea of candles behind him was maybe the best visual of the movie though.
I wasn't interested in the bug ship when it was a spaceship/hovercraft but then the little legs came out and now I love it.
Susan Sarandon's villain is not even worth mentioning. She is what she is, essentially a plot device. And I know she can do a cheesy villain well, she did it in Enchanted. I don't know why it's so hard for comic movies to make a villain worth watching, the good-to-bad ratio is so skewed. Her death scene was pretty satisfying though for a character I had zero investment in.
Pretty solid comic book film! Conceptually I like the idea of the Blue Beetle but I think what really helped it most is that Xolo Maridueña just absolutely has the charm to carry a so-so script. He's definitely lead actor material. I don't think it should have bombed like it did, I put the blame on a terrible trailer and the fact that it already had the DC*EU stink on it so close to The Fl*sh.

Blue Beetle review
Director(s):
Angel Manuel Soto
Main cast:
Xolo Mariduena, Bruna Marquezine, Susan Sarandon, Raoul Max Trujillo, Becky G, Damian Alcaraz, George Lopez, Elpidia Carrillo, Adriana Barazza and Harvey Guillen.
Runtime: 127 minutes.
Does it pass the Bechdel test? Yes
Basic Plot:
College graduate Jaime Reyes is chosen by the Scarab, a power piece of alien technology, to become the Blue Beetle.
Overall Thoughts:
Blue Beetle is an excellent family-driven superhero film. The special effects, acting, storyline and costumes are all great. Moreover, this film discusses important issues about family, immigration, racism, sexism, gentrification and capitalism. The only issue I had with the Blue Beetle film is that essential comic book characters Brenda and Paco, who are Jaime Reyes’ best friends, are completely omitted. Still, Blue Beetle is another excellent addition to the DC Universe.
Overall rating: 4.8 out of 5 stars.

This was an awesome film. It had humor, heart, ass-kicking fight scenes, superb & proper VFX sequences. Both Xolo Maridueña & George Lopez were the standout throughout the film.
It does have 1 & 2 plot devices, but it's a solid superhero film! GO SEE IT!
8/10!

Blue Beetle (dir. Ángel Manuel Soto).
DC's latest superhero origin story plays up its immigrant Mexican family element to much delight. Xolo Maridueña stars as a recent college grad and the first Latino-American superhero seen on the big screen in a fun but somewhat vanilla comic book adventure with all the usual story beat expectations while adding some refreshing diversity twists to its tale of resilience.
What’s like most promising and enjoyable is the world and family it sets up. Set over the course of a only a couple of days, Blue Beetle efficiently barrels through decades of convoluted superhero backstory and legacies despite some ludicrous decisions made in the pursuit of an unexplained evil plot to create an army of super soldiers.

When it comes to superhero movies, they always feel a bit samey nowadays, don't they? Especially origin stories. While this one plotwise is almost step by step, the same plot as Iron Man, Ant man, etc, it had its charm and its own identity.
I'm ofc talking about Blue Beetle

First thing first, the Reyes family? MVP.
I loved the family in this movie. Their dynamic, their relationship to each other. In Ant-man, we have divorced parents who are doing their best for their little girl. Here, we have 3 generations of people sticking up for each other through thick and thin.
(And Nana is a beast hell yea!)
Susan Sarandon as Victoria Kord, the main antagonist, is more or less evil for evils sake. She mentions stuff like "for the greater good" but there's no real depth to it. Her underling, carapace (I think it was) was the actual physical threat to Jaime, and like many other origin stories, becomes a different colored version of the hero (only BIGGER and BADDER). Except we did get a nice little moment towards the end between Jaime and Ignacio, which is his real name.
This movie is like the 8th bomb in the DC franchise at this point, but I feel so sad about it especially in regards to this movie. If this had released 10 years ago, heck, even before the pandemic, it would probably have done great at the box office. Mayne not huge numbers, but definitely not sub 100 mil worldwide 💀.
This is a good superhero movie. It is fun, the characters are a blast, it has heart, it has comedic moments and serious moments. Xolo Maridueña is perfect in the role, and I so wish to see him in more things (I hope this doesn't tank his career). I hope we see this Blue Beetle in the new DC Universe James Gunn is cooking up. With how stand-alone this movie was, it definitely could fit!
There are some things I dislike. During his first transformation it look horrific and almost shot in a like "horror way" but it was played for comedic effect with the family screaming and panicing like headless chickens and the music being up beat and fun. I wish they stopped doing such tonal whiplashes. If it's an horrific experience please show it as one!
It's both strange and not strange how easy the family got to killing people while Jaime throughout does not want to kill and become a murderer.
And like I said earlier, the villain is kinda bland.
But still, I like this movie a lot. I want it to succeed, and I want to see this character again!
So please support this movie at the cinema. Or rent it when it comes out there. It deserves to be seen.
