In the 2 weeks since I found the full (currently available) discography of epic: the musical, I have probably listened to the whole thing start to finish maybe 5-7 times and know 50% of the song's lyrics word for word

So. I think I finally understand how people can obsess and form fandoms over musicals now

On animism

One of my teachers at university told us something today, that I believe to be relevant to animism and therefore also witchcraft:

He explained that in the West we see everything as occurences, whereas in some languages the same happenings are described as actions. Meaning that in the West we tend to imply that there is no agency involved in whatever happens, while some other languages tend to imply that someone activily causes things. His example was that in the West rain is understood as something that just happens, no one causes the rain. Whereas in Mesoamerica it was believed that it rained because some god was crying.

While the idea of a literal crying god causing it to rain on earth might be outdated, I find it really interesting how these two perspectives - events vs. actions - might shape our relationship with the world. If rain is not just an occurence, but someone acting with agency, rain becomes another part of the community we live in. The community then doesn't only consist of humans anymore, but of everything that surrounds us. Suddenly there are all these new players that actively affect your life with their actions. Other-than-human persons that you can interact with and with whom you have to keep a friendly relationship. If the tree in front of your house isn't just an object, but a being with agency, you actually have to be at least respectful and might even want to build a relationship with them, get to know them, learn from them.

I think that's really the core of animism. Descriptions of animism are often reduced to the believe that everything has a soul, but I think believe doesn't even factor into it. You don't need to believe that there is a non-physical aspect to rain, mountains, stones. It's about how we interact with them. I don't even have to ask myself the question if the tree in front of my house has a soul in order to learn about and from them or to interact with them. In my opinion animism is something that is done, not thought or believed. It's a perspective.

Listening to my teacher also reminded me of the following part of Braiding Sweetgrass (great book btw) which explains all this really well:

A bay is a noun only if water is dead. When bay is a noun, it is defined by humans, trapped between its shores and contained by the word. But the verb wiikwegamaa - to be a bay - releases the water from bondage and lets it live. "To be a bay" holds the wonder that, for this moment, the living water has decided to shelter itself between these shores, conversing with cedar roots and a flock of baby mergansers. Because it could do otherwise become a stream or an ocean or a waterfall, and there are verbs for that, too. To be a hill, to be a sandy beach, to be a Saturday, all are possible verbs in a world where everything is alive. Water, land, and even a day, the language a mirror for seeing the animacy of the world, the life that pulses through all things, through pines and nuthatches and mushrooms. This is the lan- guage I hear in the woods; this is the language that lets us speak of what wells up all around us.

This is the grammar of animacy. [...] In English, we never refer to a member of our family, or indeed to any person, as it. That would be a profound act of disrespect. It robs a person of selfhood and kinship, reducing a person to a mere thing. So it is that in Potawatomi and most other indigenous languages, we use the same words to address the living world as we use for our family. Because they are our family.

To whom does our language extend the grammar of animacy? Naturally, plants and animals are animate, but as I learn, I am discovering that the Potawatomi understanding of what it means to be animate diverges from the list of attributes of living beings we all learned in Biology 101. In Potawatomi 101, rocks are animate, as are mountains and water and fire and places. Beings that are imbued with spirit, our sacred medicines, our songs, drums, and even stories, are all animate. The list of the inanimate seems to be smaller, filled with objects that are made by people.

Thanks so much for your help in populating Pix’s office! This is one of the more involved shots from the animatic I’ve been working on and I wanted to pack it with as many details as possible. Any suggestions that didn’t make it into this shot will probably end up in the one set in the Museum!

I painted most of this in the airport on my way to meet up in person with the other mods of @mcytblrsexymen — spent a weekend touring museums and hanging out with @/theminecraftbee, @/magicalmanhattanproject, and like a dozen more tumblr friends and mutuals 😆 It was my first time in the USA! I got my purse stolen and lost all my IDs and money and my epipen! (My first mistake was being too gay in the Smashburger, it’s a long story. It’s okay though, I’m getting things replaced now that I’m back in Canada ✨🇨🇦)

I just listened to all the songs which is so weird. I've been feeding off the snippets for months (like a little racoon with rabies), trying to imagine how the final product would sound like. My first impression is that everything sounds way more badass than what I had in mind lmao

My favorite track was Ruthlessness but this one has already been my favorite since I first got into Epic so yeah pretty predictable. Keep Your Friends Close is a close second.

For animatics, I'll start by working on these two. I'll first make the Keep your friends close one, then I will, at last, work on the Ruthlessness animatic. BOTH WILL TAKE A LOT OF TIME SO I'LL PROBABLY HAVE A CRAZY SANTA CLAUS BEARD WHEN I'M DONE BUT WHATEVER

the underworld thoughts (per the watch party) 1/3:

sounds like they start out sailing on the ocean and hit a portal to the underworld at ~31 seconds and I can just imagine how a stage production would change the lighting to depict this

“this land confuses your mind” immediately before we’re asked when a man becomes a monster. the saga ends with odysseus choosing to become a monster. odysseus keeps thinking of the infant from that night. he’s not sober!! someone needs to take his keys!! more thoughts in part 3 on this?

having mircsy as the animator for polites’ cameo when their animatics featuring him are so popular was a neat touch

the “waiting” calls back to full speed ahead (penelope’s waiting for me) and plants the seed of fear that grows throughout this saga that odysseus won’t make it back to his wife and son

the way odysseus’s voice breaks a little on “mom?”

honestly reminded me of potc3 when elizabeth sees her father. I wonder if any of the animatics will frame it similarly

Pomme's songs

I love Pomme (the artist) and Pomme (the egg) and I think a lot of her song are really relatable to Pomme's characters and others so let me ramble a bit !

It is about insomnia, and it just one of my fav song of her and obviously their is this great animatic about Pomme !

2 La lumière (the light)

The song Pomme reference in her latest book to Bad. It is about losing someone to Alzheimer, it's a song meant to be brutal and soft at the same time.

Obiously very relatable to Pomme for the past days with bad, espcially the sweat despair stream.

3 Pourquoi la mort de fait peur (why does death scares you)

Well lots of talk about death in the qsmp and in Pomme's life and this songs is about how love can ease the anxiety towards death. For me it is a dappleduo song but honestly could be about a lot of people.

Fun fact: Macaques "shadow powers" in this AU is more or less a relfection of Mental ilness. And how, him not getting help/wanting help, makes it worse. This can also be explained with this line:

And the next example... Yea that explains what happens when Wukong(acddently) makes it worse, because he doesent realise what is going on with Macaque:

This is because when Wukong got trapped under the Mountain, and they had "The Argument", it just made. Macaque felt so lost and alone after this(for 500 years)

Honestly the whole song could just be an animatic of Macaque getting worse and worse. (if i had the skill and time to do so-)

Besides, my recent mental excursions have been far less painful than those past. Doubtless thanks to your company.

It was an artwork I wanted to do since before the animatic's production albeit with more somber colors like the frame that comes before this one in the animatic. You could say the palette for the lighting was a happy accident. I hardly got to anything experimental for the animatic for consistency's sake and it's one of the reasons I'm really happy with this frame. I also won't deny that I've applied what I learned when I was doing Paul's Rindo print.

Also, one of the things I told myself was "If not for Rindo, at least I get to finish it for Fret's hilarious face." 🤣

Twisted Wonderland (The Day After Tomorrow)

I am feeling apocalyptic. So while I work on my animatic, prepare for some angst and end-of-the-world stories, with a fun twist. Different types of end-of-world movies X a fandom. Like in this post.

(The Day After Tomorrow is a film from 2004)

Sypnosis: The world of Twisted Wonderland is suddenly changing. Magic is failing, and creatures all over the world are acting strange. Little does Sage island know, it’s gonna get cold. Deadly cold.

“Hey guys I noticed that your magic seems to be acting up,” Y/n said as they watched Grim struggle to use his fire.

“Not just us, everyone is experiencing this. Even Riddle can’t collar as easily as before. Thank goodness,” Ace said in a slight whisper.

“Yeah, and the teacher's potions are weakening recently too,” Deuce added.

"What is happening around here?" Y/n wondered to themselves..

When the bell rang, ending lunch. Ace, Deuce, and Grim had a particular magic class to attend. And did not require Y/n to be there, so they decided to just take a stroll around the school.

“I could have sworn winter was supposed to end months ago,” Y/n shivered as the snow continued to fall.

As Y/n walked along, suddenly waves and clocks of fairies of all kinds suddenly took to the sky. Even the other native students stood in shock and awe at the strange sight as they flew off to the horizon.

The students whispered and gasped among themselves. When suddenly the ground shook violently causing many to fall to their knees. But just as fast as the earth quake came it suddenly came to a halt.

As Y/n shakely got to their feet as Everyone stood in shock. When the announcer sounded. It sounded robotic and prerecorded.

“Alert, please calmly return to your forms for further instruction and safety. When updated we will let you know when we will evacuate the school,” the alert said.

Everyone did not calmly go to their dorms, instead a stampede of students rushed to the mirror room in a panic. Y/n froze and thought what to do, ramshackle my have been restored, but it wasn’t up to pare to handle disasters like this. And knowing Grim he might just run to Ramshackle and instead some other dorm.

So going against the crowd, y/n managed to fight there way to Ramshackle. After an hour. They got their just in time to meet Grimm at the gate. But just as Y/n managed to stop grim from running to ramshackle as another earthquake hit. And they watched as the whole building sunk into the ground before them.

“W-where do we go know?!” Grimm screamed as he clung to his human.

“I guess we shelter with another dorm for know,” Y/n said as they scooped up the fire cat and ran as the ground shook.

Y/n and grim quickly ran back to the school, but along the way as the looked over at the horizon. Something big was coming.

“H-hey why does the ocean look funny all of a sudden?” Grimm asked.

“The shore line is receding far out. Hurry Grimm! Tidal wave!” Y/n screamed.

Out at sea, vastly approaching land was a mega Tsunami. As the two ran and were a good distance away. Grimm looked back as a part of the tall wave cracked into Ramshackle, completely obliterating the old building.

“Gahh! Where do we go know?!” Grimm screamed.

“We have to shelter at a different dorm!” Y/n shouted over the storm and chasing water.

- Notos by the Oh Hellos, itd make a great phoenix-rising, defeated-character-realizing-their-power-and-absolutely-destroying-someone-who-did-them-real-trauma thing. Also the metaphors and imagery. “Every inhale I take, swallow the ocean whole and I am one / With the hurricane, tall as the tide that laps with a rabid tongue”??? “With every exhale I break you down with a fury, I lay the hills undone / Like a dog gone untamed, bellowing out a river from my lungs”??????

- Boreas by the Oh Hellos, the perfect sort of ‘Im completely defeated but by god I’m still going to do something to help’

- Okay I should just include all of the Four Winds EPs in here. Get over here, Eurus and Zephyrus. Passerine and Rio Grande specifically.

- The Horror and the Wild by the Amazing Devil, see this one fandom post I made that was basically a desperate attempt to visualize an animatic I could never make

- Chords by the Amazing Devil, entirely different vibes but bloody hell it lights a fire in my heart every time I hear it. Just. “We were the winter nights / So you could be the morning snow / Your life begins by leaving / And our love is shown / In the letting go”????????

- Rockslide by the Crane Wives. Im writing a whole thing about that album, Coyote Stories’, relationship with climate change and the generally horrible state of the world and this song is the reason. “Oh I pray today my soul to keep / But we best get a move on or the devil we will meet”?? I mean. Mates. It hits hard.

- Sleeping Giants by the Crane Wives. Same album as Rockslide and just as strong if not more so. It would make for a great call-to-war or prelude-to-a-big-ol-battle.

- Rule #3 Paperwork by Fish in a Birdcage. By goodness is Paperwork underrated (though methinks Rule #2 Moonlight is even more underrated but thats just a good song) and I love it to death. Just a great song for an easygoing time. Or, alternatively, a great song for a subtle call to action.

- Rule #33 Pyre by Fish in a Birdcage. Its just great. A final, fond farewell from a beloved parent or mentor or loved one or other dear person telling you that you’ll be fine after they’re gone. Also the accordion is really neat in this one. “Trust yourself and live it your way”. It just is great.

- WOLVES OF THE REVOLUTION. ARCADIAN WILD. This gave so much inspiration for writing a revolution and the people involved in it. Its perfect for that arc. It doesnt bloody matter if said revolution is in a war tragedy of a fanfic.

Theres more but I dont have much to say about them, so just know that Horse Soldier, Horse Soldier (Corb Lund), Solar Waltz (Cosmo Sheldrake), Mvmt II Begin and Never Cease (The Oh Hellos (really bloody Christian but its so good just music wise)(Also Christmas as hell)), The Day Goes On (Bill Wurtz), and my very dear Discord’s Smallest Violin (The AJR Discord) are also very dear to my heart and would probably become something if I had enough commitment and free time and all those other extremely volatile factors to actually learn how to animate. I will, someday. But that day is not today.

Also I swear to you @writer-of-random-things I am writing the climate-change-Coyote-Stories thing. It exists. Or, about half of it exists. I got to The Hand That Feeds and its. Uh. A lot.

we're back! for those who don't know, i'm putting together songs that i think fit each of the life series winners, and they're either songs i've seen work really really well in animatics already or songs that would probably work really well, but are less popular or not associated with this fandom (yet)

i'll be linking+listing them here as well as providing little snippets of explanation for why i think the song fits, but i don't feel like making actual spotify playlists or smth, so if anyone else wants to do that, be my guest.

2. Two - Sleeping at Last: as i mentioned i had some trouble finding songs for scott since i dont watch his pov too often, so some of these are less exclusively last life and more just his character in general. that being said, i do feel like this still fits to an extent for LL!Scott

Sweetheart, you look a little tired When did you last eat? Come in and make yourself right at home Stay as long as you need (this is scott's total eldest sibling energy, always helping and trying to be friends before anything- ex: taking in cleo, being friendly to scar)

You know I'll take my heart clean apart if it helps yours beat (this applies more after last life, see: the many many many times he offers to sacrifice himself, but also the fact that he refuses to betray his friends as the boogeyman)

Like a force to be reckoned with A mighty ocean or a gentle kiss I will love you without any strings attached And what a privilege it is to love A great honour to hold you up (very representative of scott's trust and loyalty to his allies in every series, through both chaos and peace)

3. Constellations - The Oh Hellos: at first this one was only here for the star symbolism, but after listening to it a couple more times it does fit pretty well (also the oh hellos is very scottagecore)

'Cause like constellations a million years away Every good intention, every good intention Is interpolation, a line we drew in the array Looking for the faces Looking for the shapes in the silence (despite all his efforts to maintain alliances throughout the series, everything inevitably falls apart in the chaos of the finale)

Like constellations imploding in the night Everything is turning, everything is turning The shapes that you drew may change beneath a different light And everything you thought you knew Will fall apart, but you'll be all right (LL was really the only series in which they made a point to isolate the reds- in DL, there was always a pair, and alliances stayed solid despite name color in LimL and SL- but in LL, alliances could be torn apart so quickly, loyalties constantly changing which made it hard to trust others and that shows why scott's loyalty stood out)

4. How to Be a Heartbreaker - Marina and the Diamonds: this is another one that isn't exclusively LL, i just had to put one in abt scotts many ex's.

Rule number one is that you gotta have fun But, baby, when you're done, you gotta be the first to run Rule number two, just don't get attached to Somebody you could lose (i see these "rules" kind of as lessons learned from each season instead, like things he tells himself he'll do next time, but because of his loyal and caring nature, never can)

How to be a heartbreaker Boys they like the look of danger We'll get him falling for a stranger A player, singing I lo-lo-love you At least I think I do (really like i said, a play on the ex's)

5. The Garden - The Crane Wives: here it is, the obligatory crane wives song

Put your ear to my heart or set your teeth against my throat Give me something pretty to wear beneath my blood-stained clothes (something abt this line is just very scott to me)

6. A Terrible Ride - Lizard Boy: this one is an animatic recommendation! here's the animatic -also i think this is applies to most of the winners very angst

I used to be calm But now this ticking bomb is gonna go off (the way he goes after ren for revenge after pearl's death)

2. I really wish Cass saw my turtle stack- but I understand they get @'s literally constantly, so I understand them not responding to every single piece of fan art they get. Otherwise I am SHOCKED by the amount of interaction I get already that I don't think I COULD complain haha- you guys are amazing and I am so happy I can make art that makes people happy ^-^

Then, probably I May Be Invisible But I Still Look Good by @dandylovesturtles - quite possibly the best fan fic I have ever read. And I have read A LOT of fan fics.

And, finally, no surprises here: Cass apocalyptic series by @/somerandomdudelamao- the amount of feelings I get when I think about this series could fill the ocean. The characterization, the drama, the brotherly love?!? AHHH I could cry just thinking about it-
