Exactly my take on psychiatric medication.
I have severe anxiety and top of that my life is very stressful and I’m not in a good place right now. I’m going to start medication soon but I’m a little reluctant. I guess my question is; how much can medicine actually do for me, if my life is causing a lot of my severe symptoms? Like yes, the medicine will relieve some of the painful anxiety I suffer, but my stressors will still be there. Medicine can’t change my situation so what’s the point?
hi anon,
you’re absolutely right- medication will not change your situation. anxiety medication is used to decrease symptoms you are experiencing right now. it doesn’t decrease the things in your life that cause you anxiety and it doesn’t decrease the likelihood of you having anxiety tomorrow (unless you keep taking the medication). it’s not a cure. it’s more like, if you had a physical injury- let’s say broken leg -and you took pain medications. the pain medications won’t fix your leg, and it won’t cure all your pain, but it will help you right now. so if you need some help right now so that you’re able to metaphorically go to physical therapy or sleep through the night, then that might be a great thing. taking medication for now might make it easier for you to address your stressors or figure out coping skills so that in the long term, you might not need the medication anymore. but if that’s not what you want, it’s up to you. anxiety medication can be really helpful for some people, but for others, it’s really not. this is about your journey and your needs. take care :)

You’re still a writer even if you don’t write daily. It’s okay to take a break when you have other things going on in your life. It’s okay to put studying or work first. Don’t let posts about daily word counts make you feel like you’re any less of a writer because you have to balance multiple responsibilities.
