Okay, love to add on to this bc I overall agree with the conclusion but the argument that “not everyone loves research cause it’s boring” is just not a good one and I’d like to contribute my own arguments.

I could do a whole post on the intricacies of why I agree with this take in the context of the new Sunset Savanna clothes, but I will try to keep this brief.

As someone who is very “Pro Art,” I find this attitude that every single instance of cultural reference must be 100% accurate very concerning because that is not now art works, especially art for a fantasy/fictional setting. Art has and always will be derivative. You cannot create from something that you haven’t seen. Even if you try to create an alien race for a space odyssey series, they will be based on ideas you’ve seen and can extrapolate from. Just look at art of the alien races in Mass Effect and you can tell they were just animal or insect-like faces pasted on human-like bodies. This is never not the case in games. Any game that has ever had a dungeon, temple, fictional races of people, literally anything has taken reference from cultures around the world, pieced them together, and come out with something new. Unless you unironically believe all action/adventure/dungeon-crawler/sandbox games should be cancelled, you’d understand that this can’t always be the case. It’s cool when it is accurate, but more often, it’s not, and that’s fine.

Another angle I’d like to bring up in case this all goes over your head is to pretend you’re Yana Toboso. You have been approached by Disney to head a game derivative of some of their most famous famous movies based on fairy tales. Not the Brothers’ Grimm versions or any original text that first cataloged these stories, the Disney adaptations specifically. Adaptations from the 1930′s-1990′s by an American studio based in Burbank staffed with mostly white guys whose first priority was to put butts in theater seats, and if that meant changing the story’s setting, time period, or straight up entire characters and story beats, then so be it. THIS IS THE STARTING POINT. I can’t stress this enough, THIS IS WHERE YOU, YANA TOBOSO, ARE STARTING AT. Even with stories that are “supposed” to be a celebration of the culture/setting (i.e. Hans Zimmer described Lion King and its music to be a “love letter to Africa”) their well-intentioned, real-life cultural references are all over the fucking place, so why would you expect that if the source material (remember, this includes fucking Aladdin) couldn’t be bothered to get their references together, then this mobile game derived from these movies would be any better? If the creators of South Park created a new show that served as a spiritual successor to South Park, would you throw a fit because the show didn’t meet your family friendly expectations when you knew what the source material was like? Also, as much as it sucks that Yana seems to consistently flop on certain sensitive topics, it’s not her job to make Aladdin, Lion King, or Hercules (I’m singling out these cause they’re the only ones that have at least some context where they take place in-movie) retroactively culturally accurate. I can guess that she was simply given the movies and told “make a world out of this.”

One more way to consider all this: this is a fantasy world. I already know what you’re thinking. STFU because no, I’m not gonna give you the excuse of “wEll itS jUsT a GaMe iTs nOT liKe iT hURtS acTUaL pEopLE” because I don’t agree with that. This argument is from a “Pro Art” stance: if you are making a fantasy world with magic and different races aside from humans, WHY WOULD YOU EVER MAKE THE ENVIORNMENTS AND CULTURES ONE TO ONE WITH ACTUAL CULTURES??? The whole point of fantasy worlds is that you escape and immerse yourself in a world that’s unlike ours, so advocating for art to be historically/culturally accurate and consistent especially in a fantasy setting bars any sort of creativity because then you’re just copy and pasting existent cultures in a game. Why would I want to play a fantasy game where it’s just the same as real life, just the geography and landmasses are different? Not only that, but this practice can actually work against your good intentions. Applying real cultures to fictional groups of people that have negative qualities that coincide with that culture’s stereotypes is what makes fictional depictions problematic . If I make a fantasy race of Orcs that are brutish, violent, and aggressive, and then decide to base their culture on, say the Igbo, I think we can all see why this is horrible and can lead to real-world harm and misconceptions about this culture. However, mixing in several cultures can help avoid these problems as we can’t really apply negative stereotypes to all peoples equally. So from a practical standpoint, it just doesn’t make sense to take a real culture and copy and paste it to beastmen, merman, fae, or any other race, especially non-human.

And lets be honest, with the depiction of Savanaclaw being full of stupid, aggressive meatheads, there’s no way Sunset Savanna could’ve been depicted that would actually appease you. You would move the goal post to a different standard and instead of saying “TWST portrays the African coded characters terribly,” you’d say “TWST portrays the (insert specific African culture) coded characters terribly.”

So I’m going to have another hot take, and I know people will be mad and all, but I really think it needs to be said.

Not everything has to be politically correct or well researched.

Now, before you take up your torches and try and burn me at the stake, hear me out.

Yes, if we can or are interested, we should but can we agree that the degree of how important something is researched or correct varies among people?

Art is art in any form of media, and while there are many who love to research and want to be as correct as possible in terms of culture and views and such, there are people who also do not.

Some people just want to have fun and draw people or write about people and just have fun without having to look up every single thing and be scared of being worried everything thing they create will get them canceled or not or it’s correct.

And that extra time and effort? It’s not fun for everyone, it kind of takes the fun away.

Honestly for me, if someone comes to me and tells me, they love my cultures dress and make up and food and that inspired their OCs or in general they want to learn more? That makes me happy.

Why? Because they loved my culture enough be inspired by it. And that’s enough for me.

Why are we gatekeeping others because it’s not accurate enough? Here’s a hot take, no one will ever be accurate enough. We are in a world where we grow up with a mesh of views and influences and culture and style. And no one will ever be able to appease everyone.

If you have a oc, and you want to make a character based of a certain culture? Go ahead. There’s people who would be happy that you are interested in their lifestyle. If you want to do research to be accurate? you do you.

But stop this harassment of everything has to be perfect or else they get bullied or they shouldn’t have made the character or developed the lore. No one knows everything and no one will ever know.

People can be helpful and point out stuff, but only if the creator asked for it. Let people be happy and let them create.

And if it offends you? Then block them.

At the end of the day we create to have fun, and having these standards that you can’t do something because you don’t know everything just turns creators away.

Or better yet, make your own creation. And be the representation you want to be.

He was gone now...

And all you could do was weep, holding his cold hand against yourself.

You wanted so badly to hear his voice... to see his smile, to be in his warmth once again...

But alas, he was no more. He was not of this world anymore.

Days had passed, and you were given Leona's ashes and taken to the savanna to scatter them, therefore freeing his soul.

You weren't ready to let go yet, but you had to.

You hesitantly opened the urn, poured out his ashes, and let the wind do the rest.

He was free now.

You only traveled further into the peaceful grasslands, finding tall grass and lying in it.

Now curled on your side, you cried.

You cried until there were no tears left.

Until you were asleep...

There was a gentle breeze that felt so much like a kiss from Leona, and the grass covered you like a blanket.

It was almost as though he was holding you, just as he would when you napped together...

Your heart ached.

You missed him so much...

By now, a century had passed, and you were on your last leg.

Your body had given, and you were all skin and bones.

You had not eaten that whole time, and nature had quite literally grown on you.

You took one final breath, and you too, were gone.

TWST CH 7 Theory from an ENG ONLY loser

I feel so dumb. I felt like I just discovered the lost city of Atlantis, yet I'm almost certain this went noticed by like, everybody, so here, watch me make a fool of out of myself presenting this theory like I just discovered the Pyramids of Giza in the year 2022.

This is more just realizing that the events of CH 7 might have all been in front of us and (as far as I know) no one has brought this up since the game has started (this could've change now since I'm sure others have noticed this now that CH 7 is out in JP servers and I have a shit ton of tags blocked lmao).

I'm not gonna really add a bunch of commentary. Imma just let the images do most of the talking.

The shape of the chandelier as well as how the light tapers unnaturally very deliberately invokes the image of the sword, especially with that strong cross shape. It could just be a reference as most things in TWST are, or foreshadowing someone (perhaps Silver) putting an end to Malleus's OB via plunging his magic pen/sword into Malleus. I doubt they'll kill off Malleus (lmao that would be funny to kill off one of their most popular characters) so I take this all metaphorically, maybe literally, but only with Malleus leaving the battle fine in the end.

If this ends up being the case, imma be so mad I didn't realize this piece of foreshadowing earlier.

Well everything listed IS abuse. Just because he's not beating his kid doesn't mean he isn't neglecting or saying awful off-hand comments to his very impressionable son (both of which are forms of abuse. I agree that he's not malicious with his parenting style. He's not going out of his way to make life hard for Silver, but I think he just doesn't know how to parent a human child. I think to him, it's perfectly normal to expect a young fae child alone since they (presumably) are stronger and/or more magically inclined than their human counterparts, but this way of parenting is downright neglectful for a human child, and he doesn't know that.

I believe he has good intentions, but in the end he's still endangering Silver. I wouldn't be surprised tho if he really did serve in a Fae v Human war, had some anti-human inclinations, and unintentionally passed off those beliefs to Silver. To Silver, he probably felt like he has to work 10x harder if he ever wanted to compete with his fae countrymen.

However I don't agree that him being a "perfect father" would be boring. You have a war veteran father, you expect him to have some issues to work out, right? But if he was that sweet, caring, perfect father, I would argue that would be one of his more compelling aspects. There's more to be said about a character whose seen the worse, mind-scarring, depraved things in the world and still going out of his way to teach his son about kindness, chivalry, and broadening his horizons. For example, I think that's why Kratos from GOW in his current iteration is so popular—because you expect a character that revels in violence and war to be an awful abusive father, but he goes out of his way to teach his son and give him real advice based off his own mistakes. He's still cold and distant, but his advice and reasons for doing what he does are pretty astute.

You see, there's a lot more analysis and nuance to these kinds of characters; nuance that is ripe for interpretation, psychological prodding, theories, and headcanons. The fact I can even draw this much from a character I don't really know much about (I'm an ENG TWST only player) speaks for itself.

I feel like this might be a party pooper move when Yuuka just came out, but it still should be said. I see a lot of Fem!Yuu fans starting that they feel validated that there's finally a canon female Yuu as a sort of a "fuck you" to the male Yuu fans, but as someone who browses the TWST Tumblr community daily, the majority of the "hate" seems to overwhelmingly come from fem Yuu fans who insist that they treated like they are in the minority when we all know that the TWST community is majority girls/women/female.

I have seen gn and male Yuu fans and blogs who just ask that yuu's gender get appropriately tagged or assert themselves as male/gn only blogs, and then fem Yuu blogs take that statement as active hostility against fem Yuus. Even the opinion that a male Yuu makes more sense in an all boys' school (which, I mean, IT DOES) is somehow taken as an attack against the existence of any fem Yuus or the idea of even entertaining a fem Yuu, which is a huge leap. I mean, I get it. Feminine people want to project themselves into an OC in a game about attractive boys and men, so of course they would get defensive about ANY criticism over a fem Yuu, but Imma being straight with y'all—y'all need to stop acting like the entire community is against fem Yuu lovers or that you were proving the naysayers wrong. Y'all are the MAJORITY. There is no shortage of fics or art for fem Yuus. People with male/gn Yuus have to actively fight for the meager space they are "allowed" to occupy in a fandom that already caters towards straight girls/women. You're tired of the male vs female Yuu discourse? Bruh, the people who insist on bringing it up are fem Yuu fans, at least from my perspective here on Tumblr (this could be completely different on Twitter).

I say this because while many fem Yuu blogs are cool, some can be annoying about this issue, and I know that they are gonna be downright insufferable once Leona and Malleus interact with Yuuka. The shipping content is gonna fucking flood this place. You thought Masquerade Malleus was bad? Oh god, the Malleyuu shippers have yet to even reach their final form.

And don't get me wrong, I love Malleyuu, but OP has a point about the shipping culture in TWST. Yuuka WILL be overwhelmingly shipped with Malleus just by virtue of being female and him a male. And while this could be seen as a preference for hetero pairings over non-hetero pairings, but let's call it for what it is: girls just wanna pair themselves with Malleus and it's harder (but not impossible) to project yourself, a girl, when the self-insert character is a guy. That's it.

And also OP is right with feminist king Leona—if he were feminist he would treat Yuuka the way he treats his peers, which isn't great admittedly, but it's the gender-equal way. Either that or he starts treating all the boys with the same consideration he does with the women in his life (ie his sister in law). I personally would find it patronizing and demeaning if he treated me the way some of you portray Leona "he drinks his respect women juice" Kingscholar. Yuuka seems pretty capable physically and does not need Leona to handle her with kid gloves. I too want to see them really duke it out in a true show of strength, wit, and sheer willpower. That to me would communicate Yuuka's strength of character than any shallow girl boss, "I'm not like other girls" mentality that seems to permeate these kinds of physically capable female characters.

This is still early in Yuuka's story, so there's much to see how this plays out before we make a final verdict on this character. However, if there's one thing I think we should all leave with, it's that we now have male, female, and arguably gn Yuus so everyone stfu, let people enjoy their Yuus, let everyone carve their space for their Yuus, and don't talk shit about anyone's ideas because theyre (not) canon.

Everyone, please welcome Miss Yuuka Hirasaka onto the stage!

This is a very much welcome change of pace for the fandom. This is a clear proof that Yuu can be from all gender, whether gender-neutral like Game Yuu, male like Yuuken and Yuuya, or female like Yuuka.

But, at least, personally speaking, Miss Yuuka has a lot of shoes to fill.

So let’s talk about it.
