You smile as you look up from the stack of books you were checking back in.

“Hi Joel.”

You quickly grab your things and meet him by the entrance to the library.

Joel’s latest job was not far from the library and when he’d popped in to return a book and ask you to recommend a new one on his lunch break a few weeks ago he’d asked if you’d like to join him for lunch.

You’d agreed, it was harmless after all. Just two neighbours with similar taste in literature having a nice lunch. It had quickly become routine whenever you were at the library and with each passing occurrence it was feeling less and less harmless. Tellingly, you hadn’t mentioned these lunches to your husband and the guilt was eating you from the inside out. Not enough to stop though.

They had honestly become the highlight of your week. And try as you might to convince yourself that you were just being neighbourly, the pulse in your core whenever Joel smiled at you, or casually touched your arm or your back called you out as a filthy liar.

The truth is that you loved how you always held his attention, how interested he was in you. He always wanted to hear your takes on the books he’d read and always commented on how clever you were, how deeply you made connections in the things you read, how you made him see the books in a different way. His compliments made your whole body heat in the most delicious way. You’d often been told in the past that you were a bore, especially when it came to books. But he never seemed to get bored of you, never tried to talk over you or push his opinion on you.

He didn’t even notice when the pretty waitress of the little diner you were in flirted with him and batted her eyelashes. And that gave you butterflies in your tummy.

And when he started giving you a little goodbye kiss on the cheek you hadn’t protested. You’d just gone back into the library with your heart racing and your palms sweating. You felt like a teenager again. Well, how you thought a teenager would feel. You’d never experienced feelings like this growing up, you’d met your husband at church when you were just 15 years old, pushed together by both your parents. Neither of you had ever resisted it, just accepted that you were for each other and that was that.

And for the first time in your life you were starting to feel that maybe you missed out. So today when you got back to the library and Joel grabbed your hand with a sorrowful look and told you that his job was finished and the next one was all the way over town you wanted to curl into a ball and cry your eyes out.

“I’m really sorry darlin’, can’t tell you how much I’m gona miss these lunches,” he told you with the softest look in his beautiful brown eyes.

You swallowed and nodded gently, fighting to keep yourself together, “I’ve really enjoyed them too Joel. I’m going to miss them.”

You stayed like that for a moment, neither of you saying anything, his hand wrapped around yours, his thumb gently caressing the back of your hand.

“This is silly, I’ll still see you all the time. The rate things break in my house, I’ll probably see you later tonight, starting to think we have a poltergeist” you told him with a soft smile.

He chuckled, “yeah, it’s the ghost of careless owners past. But I ain’t complainin’ if it means I get to spend a bit more time with you.”

He shook his head at your soft gasp, his comment far too close to an admission you weren’t ready to face, “sorry, I shouldn’ta said that. I better go.”

He gave you hand a quick squeeze and leant in, his breath ghosting over your lips before his head swerved to the side and he placed a lingering kiss on your cheek before turning and walking back down the street, turning back to give you a wave.

You watched him until he turned out of sight before making your way back inside, the phantom clutch of his hand around yours and lingering feel of his lips on your skin doing little to hold off the wave of despair threatening to engulf you.

“That’s it you dirty fucking whore, take it!” Joel rasped out as his hips sawed violently back and forth. “Bendin’ over in a dirty back alley for a fuckin’ stranger, stupid slut.”

He's genuinely the best out of all. Him being different the way he is instead of exactly like Damian adds to the challenges that are needed to further Damian's character when it comes to him having a romantic partner. Plus, it also gives him an actual fun, interesting mix of a dynamic to bounce off of instead of a flat one that offers nothing much between the other

And without being the same, he's one of the ppl in Damian's life who still understands him like no other anyways, he truly sees more in him than what others only usually do, and isn't the type to wrongfully judge him, he accepts Damian for Damian and loves him very much unconditionally for it. Knowing this fact, Damian gets to always be his complete self around Jon without fear that he will be pushed away for it or failing raised expectations, because Jon openly gives him that special ability to feel so comfortable. <<< ALL of this from Damian applies to Jon as well

And then there's the fact that both are also very important ppl in the others lives who's impactful benefits go in not one, BOTH ways for these two. They don't keep one another's character stunted, they don't do damage to or regress the other, don't have to try to be like other ships, aren't toxic, and don't have to be ooc for the other to work in the relationship either, which are flaws Damian has in all his other ships and even Jon with all his own. Through sharing similar struggles that they carry on their shoulders, once they come together to lift it, it all becomes lighter and makes them realize they can drop that weight if they want and actually become so much more together, helping to transform the other in actual nessacarry ways naturally without having to change who they exactly are or wanting that, they only bring out the best in eachother while learning to drown their flaws instead and growing together as both their own heroes and ppl throughout it, aligning in the path of the same futures they both truly want to move foward into instead of the expectations they thought. They are exactly what eachother needs

And very unlike a certain other...Jon is one who also without even a doubt will always be there for Damian and have his back in whatever way that is needed, he'd never let him down or turn on him, he'd rather get shot with Kryptonite for him than ever do that, and so does that all apply to Damian. It's so true, that it was a promise they made to eachother when fighting to keep their friendship before. And they share equal respect for the other and complete trust as well in their relationship that they genuinely builded through what is their so earned bond of such genuine love, a love that had found it's eventual way to blossom through and turn over their old hate from the beginning that they never had thought could have anything better, something so beautiful as it is now between them, be born from it

They are also such interwined ppl, it's impossible to deny them as soulmates, those two are always together and expected like so, whenever the other is seen, the other is naturally thought of, they are the literal package deal, they are the PB to the others J (Damian specifically being the thick filled PB that can get stubborn and stiff when trying to spread over bread and Jon the glossy, sweet jam that goes right over the PB smoothly). Jon even has Damian's heartbeat memorized and listens to it often just in case of anything!! The only other person he has memorized like that is his Dad's and that is it. And they canonically are soulmates btw, being shown to always end up together no matter the universe's. These boys are one of the brightest highlights in the others life, one they both go out of their way to look for and will always delight inside all their shared time together

People tend to draw parallels between Ford and Dipper, and Stan and Mabel. So, what are some similarities you can find between Ford and Mabel, and Stan and Dipper?

i made a few posts about how the show kinda parallels dipper and stan, especially in the finales

but imo scaryoke is basically entirely about their similarities, and dipper's series goal was the same as stan's

and off the top of my head their other similarities is them being protective younger twins with trust and anger issues and that the line "who would sacrifice everything for their dumb sibling" is targeted at both of them

meanwhile ford seems to be the more (ironically) trusting like mabel, and they're both prone to tunnel vision

also the puppet funeral scene has ford musing on his similarities with her (but i demand more bonding moments between them dangit!!!)

ford unfortunately downplays his artistic/creative side (damn you stem being perceived as more respectable!!!!) but like mabel he has skills and interests in a bunch of fields (and for examples of mabel's many interests just take a peek at the intros of her shorts lol she's fascinated in so many things)

altho them both liking puppets really stuck out to me

of course they're the authors of the most important books in the show, the journals and scrapbook

and i always thought their grappling and magnet guns kinda felt similar

personally i feel like ford's obsession with his grand unified theory is like mabel's obsession with the fantasy of a summer love, aka something they both ultimately realise they never needed with mabel gaining self-love and her love of waddles, and ford still pursuing his love of weirdness but without needing the validation of others

S06E02 Fallen Idol // S06E05 War of Nerves

The Hawkeye/Sidney parallels in these episodes!! The first one that stood out to me was how these two scenes are posed and framed in exactly the same way -- and how intentional that must have been, considering both episodes were written & directed by Alan Alda in the same season.

Then I started thinking, because as it turns out, the visual parallel is only a small cue. Both of these episodes deal with very similar themes: Hawkeye sent Radar out into danger thinking he was helping him, Sidney got a kid injured trying to heal him. They deal with Hawkeye and Sidney respectively being confronted with the source of their guilt (and the consequence of their actions) on a stretcher and later in a hospital bed -- only Hawkeye is eventually met with forgiveness from the person he wronged (Radar) while being briefly condemned by the rest of the 4077th, while Sidney is granted no absolution from his patient, but has the camp behind him for support and understanding.

Is it a coincidence, then, that it's Hawkeye who tries, even at the last minute, to have Sidney absolved by his patient? Hopes and pushes for forgiveness time and time again, when he's been through something eerily similar so recently? When it's in his nature to heal and, having been shown right in his hopes before, thinks there has to be a way to grant Sidney the same kind of peace? Only the difference is this: Hawkeye fixes bodies and Sidney fixes minds. Hawkeye takes the verbal punches from Radar and knows he's deserved them, knows he'll heal at the end of the day, because Radar was his patient only in body and not in mind. Sidney takes the verbal punches from his patient and hopes it's what will help the kid heal, because taking the punches the last thing Sidney can do for him.

one of the things that I found particularly interesting in Demigods of Olympus is that it finally gives the best direct comparison we've seen so far between Percy and another character's experiences in terms of academics and particularly ableist discrimination.

The way Zane describes his experiences and what we see in his POV is that, while he is similarly discriminated against for his "atypical" behavior and blame is placed on him, the only sorts of punishments he receives for this are relatively benign, such as an increase in counseling. (It is also notable that Zane is somewhat autistic-coded, such as having the "incorrect" scripts when speaking with adults and Sam explicitly reminding him to remember to make proper eye contact.) Percy, on the other hand, similarly experiences discrimination for "atypical" behavior, but whereas Zane is treated as "too smart for his own good" and given slaps on the wrist, Percy is automatically labeled as aggressive, destructive, and a trouble-maker based on preconceived assumptions about him and is more severely punished, such as being frequently expelled.

We rarely get this level of direct comparison between Percy's experiences and that of another character, particularly such similar experiences, so looking at the differences is really interesting to gauge what their different experiences with ableist discrimination is like - and how it could potentially tie into intersectionality and other forms of discrimination at play for them.

For instance, Zane's parents are generally heavily implied to be middle-class and/or generally financially secure, versus Percy who grew up poor, so it could be classism in combination with ableist discrimination. Alternatively, it could be intersectionality with racial discrimination, as neurodivergent behavior in people of color is significantly more likely to be punished more severely and labeled as aggressive or disruptive behavior due to racist preconceptions - particularly since we know Percy's experiences with ableist discrimination are also somewhat based on assumptions people make regarding his appearance. Both Zane and Percy are racially ambiguous - Zane's appearance essentially being completely unspecified, but Percy at least having some notable details such as having a deep tan complexion. If not racism, it could also be colorism, which in this context often has similar intersectionality. There's a lot of potential options.

It's just very interesting to me! I love having such a direct point of comparison to examine the experiences of two characters within.

It’s so funny how Katelyn and Neil are so similar and yet cosmic opposites. They’re both redheads taller than the minyard brother they’re dating. They both stood their ground to make their s/o’s go to therapy. They both can’t stand their s/o’s brother. Katelyn is a normal college cheerleader. Neil is the son of a mob boss. As far as we know Katelyn is one of the only characters in the series without a tragic backstory. Neil’s tragic backstory continues haunting him for three books.

Wild how we know that Elizabeth Woodville was officially appointed to royal councils in her own right during her husband’s reign and fortified the Tower of London in preparation of a siege while 8-months pregnant and had forces gathering at Westminster “in the queen’s name” in 1483 – only for NONE of these things to be even included, let alone explored, in the vast majority of scholarship and historical novels involving her.

it would have been really interesting for thalia and jason to have really opposing zeus/jupiter kid powers, similar to nico and hazel with hades/pluto. maybe thalia controls air while jason controls lightning, and it's a huge source of frustration for thalia since she feels aerokinesis is too weak. she would have to unlearn her bias and instead learn how powerful aerokinesis can be. maybe it's the opposite way around, and jason uses aerokinesis but can't control lightning, and all his fights and triumphs had to be done with aerokinesis alone.

maybe thalia's powers are more on the nature side while jason's leans more towards the justice and power side. his powers could include mind reading, size shifting, shapeshifting, lie detecting, gamakinesis, etc. it could be the opposite way around, and that could play into thalia's fatal flaw (ambition/desire for power) and jason's feelings of pressure from camp jupiter to be a great leader.

maybe thalia can fly and jason can't, which annoys her since she's deathly afraid of flying, or maybe it could be the other way around, and she tries to overcome the fear so jason can give her a flight.

maybe they don't share a single similar power besides the typical demigod stuff (superhuman strength, superhuman durability etc), and when they see one another again, they expect the two of them to be similar because they're siblings, they're both children of the same god, they were raised together for two years. but they keep realising just how different they are, and they discover how different each others' powers, and it only emphasises that more.

Also, I don't think I've seen anyone comment on this but Tuesday and Tooth Fairy actually give off similar vibes to each other. Both are presented as motherly, calm and collected characters who slowly become uncanny the more you stare at them. They both speak calmly, sing a nursery rhyme in a similar way (slightly creepy) and have this weird, off-putting aura that I usually can't explain.

The main difference (aside from their opposite color palette) is that one is a sweetheart who cares for children and the other is a malicious woman who interacts with spirits.
