The rain had slowed enough that Andrew could hear the rustle of the underbrush as the intruder moved. Then, inch by inch, they crept out from under the bushes. First a pointed black nose, followed by a russet-colored muzzle made dark brown by the rain. Ears pointed forward in wary alert instead of back in fear or submission. A thin, wiry frame that spoke as much of perseverance as it did hunger. Blue eyes the color of a lost soul. Andrew’s nose told him she-wolf but something deeper and more raw said, I know you.

Frozen, Andrew swallowed hard and had to fight to keep his claws extended. Because he had to be wrong – he had to be. There was no way that this trespasser could be the person he thought it was. That person was gone.

To his surprise, the wolf protects him, unbidden, from his father's men. Neil finds himself drawn to the wolf, in a way he can't quite understand or put words to. And he opens his eyes just as the lightning strikes. It bathes the forest in a bluish glow for half a second, but it's enough for Neil to see.

Abram refuses to ever let the memories go, holding them close to his heart through countless names and near-deaths. They'll meet again one day because they promised they would.

Neil rolled his eyes, stepping further into the room and tossing his bag onto his desk. “And you decided to celebrate by watching…” His voice trailed off as he leaned against the back of the couch, tilting his head at the screen.

On the TV, a man stumbled through a dimly lit alley, blood dripping dramatically from his side as ominous music swelled.

“…whatever this is?” Neil finished, vaguely amused.

“Background noise,” Andrew replied, completely uninterested.

Neil raised an eyebrow at the screen. “Is that guy supposed to be dying?”

Andrew didn’t bother to look up. “Go away.”

But the more he thought about it, the more he kind of…wanted to try it out. Just to see the reactions it could receive. He had seen how others responded to the Trojans saying increasingly nice things to shitty opponents, saw how it would throw off their game, and decided it was just strategic to try something out.
