So often we are expressing pain, anger and pressure of the past to a situation today just because it reminds us of an event in the past. This can get messy. We lose trust in someone today because of a habit they mirror from our ex or judge someone’s behavior before checking their intention. This can be a dangerous habit but a useful one to keep us alert and aware. Don’t jump to a conclusion but use it as a time to research. Your mind generates any number of defenses to try to protect you from getting hurt, such as denial, acting out, blaming, criticising, crying, or justifying your behaviour. These are usually techniques we learned in childhood and while they worked then, to some degree, they no longer work as adults. In fact, they often work against us, pushing others away and creating only more fear and conflict. Reacting to your fears caused by something that happened in the past means that you are reacting to the present moment in the same way you reacted in childhood. In fact, when something triggers your fear, you may experience the same feelings you had as a child when you were hurt, angry or afraid, such as feeling anxious, helpless, unworthy or powerless. These childlike feelings make it very difficult to respond to the present moment in an effective way. As an adult, you can take care of your childhood hurts by responding in an adult way, by expressing (not demanding) your needs, listening to (not blaming) the other person, and coming up with a mutually satisfying resolution. In this way, you’ll not only find your relationships more amicable, but you will be more likely to get the love, care and respect you’ve always wanted. All stress, anxiety, depression, is caused when we ignore who we are, and start living to please others. No expectations -> no disappointments. It's not the behavior of a person that causes pain, it's the unfulfilled expectation of what you think they should have done. When expecting something from someone, you make your happiness dependent on someone else's actions and thus you get both of you into a situation where you can get hurt. You because your expectations were not fulfilled and the other person because they were not able to live up to your expectations. It just creates unnecessary pressure on both sides. You can't please everyone and it's not your job to do so. Your job is to create your happiness from within. True happiness starts when you stop trying to live up to everyone's expectations and live your life as you want it. You can always just be happy in the present moment and when you don't expect the present to be different, you can accept it as it is.
