How did you start learning code? Any books you would suggest? How do I start?
I started with codecademy’s html/css course, then moved on to Python… then took classes through my university lol. It was an alright way to start, but codecademy won’t really get you much further than knowing syntax and the very basics.
Tbh it really depends on how you like to learn - I liked codecademy’s interactive lessons, so one of the things I’ve found really useful since moving on is codeschool - it’s similar but they go a lot more in depth. It does require a subscription but they offer a few courses for free.
I’ve heard good things about Khan academy but I haven’t tried it myself.
If you like lectures, a lot of schools put entire courses on youtube / coursera / udemy / edx, etc. (the links are just random examples, I haven’t done those). Sometimes they charge you if you want a certificate at the end but I believe most of these are free.
There’s also entire courses online that claim to get you from code newbie to developer ready - the one that pops into my head is freecodecamp (which is javascript / node focused) but I’m sure there are others. A lot of these are just collections of lessons from other websites (like codecademy) that someone put together in an order they think makes sense.
If you prefer books the best idea is probably to just do a google search of “best beginner book”
There’s also a whole lotta other resources to delve further into certain languages but this post is already getting large lol.
Finally!: obligatory plug for the coding masterpost created by @frostyzach which is huge and very comprehensive - if nothing in this post sounded appealing, definitely check that out.

Hey writing mom!!!!! Do you have any tips on how to prep for nanowrimo????? Also if you don't mind tips on how to write longer???? (I tend to underwrite) Thank you!!! -Dean
Hi Dean! Good question!
My best NaNoWriMo tips boil down to four simple points;
There's no shame is starting early. I try to write at least three chapters before NaNoWriMo even starts. It's like a safety net. If I miss a few days because I'm busy, or just not feeling it, those three chapters are my safety net. You'd be surprised how much good they do you.
Outline. OUTLINE. OUTLINE. For the love of god, OUTLINE. have a general idea of what you're doing, at least. You don't want to write 10,000 words at the start then take a whole week off because you have no Idea where the story is going next.
Don't delete ANYTHING. If you wrote it, you count it. Do NOT go back and rewrite a scene over and over and over again. There's no point. NaNoWriMo is about getting it written, not getting it perfect. Do ALL of your editing when it's over. I know it's painful, but leave all your ugly red spelling errors and strange sentence structure as it is. Fix it later. Don't edit. Don't delete.
Set a low goal. I aim for 500 words a day during NaNoWriMo, and it gives me the option to take an easier day and stop at my goal, but almost always I write my 500, and it amps me up to write more. I almost always go over. Sometimes I'll write 5,000 a day. Sometimes even more.
As for underwriting, Try setting a timer. Don't let yourself stop until the timer is up. It's helped some other people I know, but I have the exact opposite problem. I overwrite a lot.
Feel free to add on y'all.
And for the record; I plan on participating again this year but that might change depending on my laptop circumstances. It's currently... Out of commission. :(

I really just need to have a masculine name now, even if it’s not the one I stick with. Could you just give me a not-too-out-there masc name you like? I’d really appreciate it
Here’s a couple: Connor, Calvin, Mason, Liam, Oliver, Luca, Ethan, Henry, Owen, Wyatt, Weston, Hudson, Christian, Nolan

small ways to be a better person ✨
wait for someone if u notice they’re falling behind
if you have a moment of admiration or love for someone, say it out loud
give random song recs and send them things that made u think of them
be as kind to yourself as you are to others
be more aware of your surroundings and help people who seem to need help
if someone gets interrupted, ask what they were going to say
try to step inside someone’s shoes instead of judging them or labeling them
don’t say hurtful things especially if it’s not constructive
say “I love you” more often and spend more time with people you love
make sure everyone in the group is included
make someone’s day better by smiling at everyone you see and maybe saying hello
ask if someone is okay if you notice that they’ve been distant

things that help a tiny bit
imagining your heart is full of vibrant, blooming flowers, or stars, or a forest, rather than empty
when you’re outside, notice things on purpose to smile about
make up stories about strangers passing by
when you’re speaking to someone: rather than overthinking about yourself, find traits that are beautiful about them and listen deeply to what they’re not saying
be genuine, and if you feel like you’re genuinely cynical and negative, find ways to heal yourself and change your view on the world

I’ve seen images of this on here but I’m surprised that, to my knowledge, no one’s connected the audio into Tumblr yet. So, here’s that.
