deltarune ch 3/4 roaring knight theories (spoilers)

hey guys, i'm about to yap a lot and come to absolutely no conclusions.

this is a long fucking post. i did not mean for it to get so long. i'm very sorry to anyone who decides to actually read all of this.

spoilers ahead, don't click if you don't want them

okay so this is just gonna be a collection of several theories about who the roaring knight is, and also me casting doubt upon these theories. which is why i said i come to absolutely no conclusion at the end.

i've seen some interesting stuff online exploring all the options, but a lot of people (on tumblr at least) seem pretty dead-set on it being dess. i think that's totally possible and would be super cool, but i'd also like to hear more arguments for other potential candidates. so i'm hoping at least someone enables me and starts a conversation about other possible knights because of this post.

i'd also like to note that while i don't care about being spoiled (so say anything you want i'm reading all the spoilers anyways), y'all should know i am currently only a little bit of the way through ch4. so if this is missing some information that's gained later on in ch4 that's why.

so i'll start with what i believe is a red herring knight candidate

carol holiday:

the beginning of ch4 introduces some pretty compelling evidence that points to carol potentially being the knight.

first of all there's this

when interacting with the stove/sword, noelle specifically says "Oh, it's just my mom's katana."

hmmm.

idk seems sus.

and then also the fact that while the SOUL is separated from kris, we listen in on their conversation with an unknown person who manifests as an ominous black text box. i, at least, interpreted this as kris talking to the knight, since both of them are clearly in on some making-dark-fountains-shenanigans. and then the maybe-dark-knight/ominous-black-text-box says they'll be there soon, and carol shortly shows up when noelle states that she shouldn't be home for hours since she's always working late with her mayor duties.

it's also totally possible that kris wasn't talking to the knight at all, and therefore this theory holds little to no weight.

and she maybe has a motivation for being the knight, too. maybe she's trying to find dess by opening dark fountains and starting the roaring and that's why she and kris are in kahoots. idk.

however, this feels too easy. it feels like we're being misled with such obvious clues that don't require any easter egg diving to pick up on.

(i mean it obviously might turn out to be carol in the end. and then i'll look like the "i'm connecting the dots"/"you aren't connecting SHIT" buzzfeed unsolved meme. but i'll burn that bridge when i come to cross it.)

so now we move to the fan favorite candidate

dess holiday:

i don't think i need to rehash all the points people have already made online for why it might be dess. but i'll do a quick recap of the main points (as i understand them, again i might miss something important simply bc i haven't played to that point)

antlers. check. sword kind of looks like a bat, which dess is said to have had/used sometimes. check. eldritch horror punk aesthetic. check. haunting the narrative. check. parallel of noelle's sister being the overarching antagonist to asriel, frisk's look-alike's (chara's) brother being flowey in undertale. check. code for the shelter, where the knight is shown to kidnap people to, being in dess's guitar. check.

(just realized i'm definitely missing a lot of crucial points but by god i don't have the energy to read through six hundred different forums for every single explanation i'm sorry)

my doubt? ....idk. i just feel it in my bones. it's gotta be more complicated than "the knight is dess."

(or i'm going to look like an idiot when deltarune is completed and released someday. que será, será. c'est la vie.)

moving onto her motives.

depending on how long rudy's been sick, (which i'm actually not sure of, can't remember if it has been mentioned in game) dess could be trying to find a cure for him through dark world/fountain experimentation. maybe she thinks the roaring will fix his condition. but that's a bit of a stretch.

and i don't really know what else could be driving her to do this. like, i'm just not seeing a motive right now for dess doing whack shit. which could obviously change with more context, since we don't currently have a clear motive for kris doing whack shit either, but, yeah.

i think it's more likely that there's some weird possession shenanigans going on like what's happening with us (the SOUL) and kris than just straight up "the knight is dess fucking shit up while completely in her right mind." i saw somebody suggest that it's dess being piloted by kris's original soul, which i think is actually a pretty good possibility. a npc-possession-by-the-playable-character arc like that would also parallel undertale, where asriel went sicko mode after being possessed by chara's soul (if i'm remembering correctly).

next up

rudy holiday:

i actually don't think i've seen any tumblr posts talking about this, but i did find someone on some forum i was looking at suggest that it could be rudy desperately searching for a cure for his illness, which i thought would be a pretty cool twist.

but other than the antlers thing, i'm not sure there's much evidence at all pointing to this. the picture of rudy we've gotten so far seems pretty far from focused on his own issues. he cares a lot about noelle (and also kris) and encourages them to focus on having fun and enjoying their childhoods. he doesn't seem like the type of guy who'd rip the world apart trying to fix himself.

but hey, anything's possible at this point!

and this will be the last one i touch on, since many of the other popular theories (gaster, papyrus, etc) have been pretty thoroughly debunked by a lot of people

discarded vessel:

i saw someone on reddit say that their main theory right now is that the knight is the vessel we made upon entering the game which was discarded just before we were placed into kris. the vessel would be soulless and not behave like a normal lightner or darkner, which would explain why the knight is a little uncanny in their capabilities. it would also be a nice tie-in of the first moments of the game being critical to the entire story.

my literary analysis brain is arguing with itself over this one. one part of it is saying, "yes the vessel being the knight would give the overarching themes of control/the lack of it a physical shape and be so meaningful." the other part of it is saying "the vessel doesn't need to make a return, its purpose was served by drawing attention to the themes of control/the lack of it before the true story began so that players would actually notice every instance where the theme is touched upon."

it would be cool. idk if it's true.

i've already commented like six times on this post but i needed to come back to publicly say that you're genuinely evil for posting this. klarion has infested my brain. all i can think about is klarion scenes. he's now a main character of my insane giant dc crackfic.

I like this comic where Tim Robin finds Teekl stuck in a tree and gets to meet Klarion and they go through some shenanigans together

So I propose a sequel to this story with current Tim in which Bernard keeps leaving food outside the marina for the local cryptids cause hes silly like that and at some point Teekl gets separated from Klarion and Bernard notices this stray cat eating his left out food. He takes a liking to the little fur ball after Teekl shows up a few nights in a row and at some point takes him inside the house boat to care for him. Tim recognizes Teekl right away and is like "that cat again!!!" And at some point Bernard gets to meet Klarion

i can't keep going on like this. i can't keep staying silent and pretending to agree when the majority of the fanmedia i consume does not align with my headcanons. it is not my truth, and i must live my truth.

(disclaimer: i fucking love a good yearner!tim fic/hc/drabble/fanart. i'm a yearner and i like to project onto my blorbos. yearner!tim is a niche i greatly enjoy. i simply cannot truly see him this way. if you purposefully misinterpret this as me hating on yearner!tim headcanoners, i will bite your ass.)

this is my headcanoning, fanfic-authoring, canon-hating truth:

tim drake is not a yearner.

he's a fucking idiot.

that man is not a yearner. he is an intellectualizer. he will run fucking laps around himself to justify his feelings as coincidental and circumstantial and not even realize he's doing it. he doesn't sit around sighing and wondering if someone likes him back because he doesn't even fucking know he likes them in the first place. he doesn't have a single clue when he has a crush until they ask him out or kiss him, at which point he goes "oh shit. this is a thing that's happening."

after being asked out/kissed and realizing his feelings? if those events somehow don't lead to him becoming involved with the person, then sure. he yearns a little. but he shuts it out and pretends it's not happening. he doesn't let it consume him. he has shit to do that doesn't involve dramatically staring out a window and daydreaming about his crush.

all this to say, he is a grade-a idiot. a truly cringefail dumbass. he is completely oblivious to any emotion happening inside him until someone smacks him across the face and forces him to acknowledge that he has feelings. and even then? he might just keep denying it.

no you have to contribute to your fandom if you don't want it to die. most fandoms die because people say 'it's so sad watching the fandom die when the hype dies' without doing anything about it. I'm not saying you have to push out 100k word slow-burn fic, I'm not saying you have to make fan art or gif sets or edits or anything. I'm just saying we as a community should contribute to our fandom if we don't want it to die, and by contributing, I'm talking about giving kudos, commenting on your favorite fics, reblogging your favorite art and just talking about your favorite characters. that's enough to keep a fandom alive. that's the most effective way to keep a fandom alive in my humble opinion.

fandoms die because people stop talking about it, fandoms die because people stop engaging with fan content once the hype is gone. what I'm saying is, mainstream media's hype may be gone, but our fandom can stay alive and thriving if us as a community don't let it die.

hey guys ummm first post🥳🥳

anyways i follow several bernard dowd enthusiasts on here and i also adore him so i thought i'd make a little intro to my version of bernard from my (forever unpublished completely incoherent) dc crackfic. yay!!

so here we go:

first things first, he's an immigrant! he was born in ireland but mainly raised in france. his dad is ethnically irish and greek, but born and raised in ireland. his mom is french. he moved to gotham at 14 years old when his paternal grandfather's company opened a branch in the usa

his native language is french since he grew up on the outskirts of paris. he mainly speaks french at home, but his family, especially his dad, also frequently speaks irish gaelic. he learned english in school while living in france, so he has a pretty noticeable french accent and struggles with some english pronunciations

he has an older brother! his name is wyatt dowd, and he's four years older than bernard. he'll inherit the family company after their dad, and he's currently in college for a bachelor's of english :)

bernard and wyatt are both trans since i like to project onto characters

bernard is a model! his mother was an international supermodel and traveled a lot for her job, which is how his parents met. she's had bernard doing photoshoots for various brands since he was a child. he has issues around body image and his sense of self because of this

he meets tim and steph in school when he moves to gotham. tim and steph are already friends, and they bring bernard into their group when the snotty trust fund kids swarm him. it doesn't take him long to connect the dots and figure out they're vigilantes, and he is more than happy to be their civilian moral support

after a ridiculous amount of plot, (most of which i cannot explain without at least six powerpoints and two hours worth of incomprehensible yapping,) bernard decides he wants to enter the vigilante world. oracle takes him under her wing and teaches him all she knows, and he eventually becomes the strategist and overwatch for young justice. he goes by the name "polaris," aka the north star (which is a star in the constellation ursa minor, the small bear)

and that's pretty much the basic rundown of my fic's version of bernard! if anybody actually read this to the end i hope you enjoyed my senseless rambling! and if for some reason you want to hear more of my yapping about my dc crackfic, i'd be happy to do intros to other characters or explain stuff in more detail :)
