when james potter became head boy, the second thing he did was cry in the common room. loud, full on sobbing, sirius had to calm him down. from that point on, if he had any sort of strong emotion, he made sure to display it in the common room - fear, anger, guilt, sadness, happiness, joy.

he wanted to show the first years that being sorted into gryffindor didn't mean being brave all the time, there was no pressure on them to be too brave to cry or worry or yell or laugh. he wanted them to know that feelings were natural and good and free and brave.

james kept a notebook purely to remember things about people because he would hate it if he didn't remember that his mum loves receiving flowers randomly, but never tulips. and how his dad takes his coffee (strong but milky, one sugar). and how sirius has to take that hayfever potion everyday but won't because it's not 'punk' to have hayfever (tell him the potion's a shot, he'll down it). and how peter's not just scared of the dark, he has nyctophobia and it's not funny to peter, so it's not funny full stop. and how remus says he likes the plain honeydukes chocolate the best, but thats just because it's the cheapest and he doesn't want people to spend more money on him than necessary. and how lily's face lights up like the sun if you remember a book she referenced once.

when he was little, regulus black was told he was good because he was quiet and sirius was naughty because he was so loud and wanted to play noisy games and not sit and read like his younger brother. it made sense to regulus : quiet=good and loud=bad

so when he was sat at the slytherin table, feeling betrayed and abandoned and alone, he looked over at his older brother. sirius was telling a joke - loudly- and laughing before he got to the punchline - so loud it reached regulus across the hall and regulus thought bitterly, childishly that his parents only told sirius off because he was loud and loud = bad.

but then, he corrected himself, because the quiet was going to kill him and the noise had saved sirius and if only regulus could be loud too, if only he could find his voice.

just imagine that james potter did not meet his best friends on the train, but at the feast, and got sorted into their dorms, but they were all eleven and awkward so it took them a while to become actual friends, you know?

so little jamie potter - sheltered and raised by his adoring parents, has no idea how to make friends but he saw remus eat chocolate once and so dropped whole ass chocolate bars into the boy's bag whenever he wasn't looking(confusing the hell out of remus). he would lean over and draw stars on sirius' parchment when he wasn't looking and always carried extra quills cos sirius would get bored in lesson and accidently break them so james would pop up awkwardly and offer one out to him. he memorised peter's timetable and hand-copied out a map of hogwarts he found and left it on his bed because he knew peter had no sense of direction and was always getting lost.

because james potter loved people the way he was raised - slow and devoted and quiet and loyal- and he became brothers with people who taught him to also love in a way that is loud and colourful and obnoxious.

i love how there's a common thing throughout the hp books of slytherin playing dirty in quidditch and oh, they break the rules and play bad and hurt people but fred weasley literally threw his beater's bat at marcus flint's head and made him smash his face into the broom handle and start bleeding like okay, diva move but still, gryffindor play dirty too
