A brief foray into the military ranks of TKEM characters…
It’s no secret that our favourite boys from the Kingdom of Corea have a history in the military - but apart from Gon being bottom of his class in the Naval Academy (as confirmed by Choi Gitae in Ep4), what else do we know? As with every tiny detail that sparks my interest in this show, I took it upon myself to find out, and gave myself a headache in the process. Let’s have a look, shall we?
Lee Jihun:
I’m starting with him because he’s the only one I could find a concrete answer for, thanks to him being from a universe very similar to ours. Though we only see him very briefly in Ep16, from that short scene we can glean a little bit of information about what he was doing:
To find his rank, one needs only to look at his epaulettes. You can see that his are black, with three gold stripes: two thick ones, with a thin stripe in the middle. This identifies his rank as follows:
He’s a Soryeong, which is the equivalent rank to a Lieutenant Commander.
However, what I find perhaps more interesting for Jihun is this badge he’s wearing:
Though it’s blurry when you zoom in, I’m pretty sure it’s this one:
You heard it here first, folks. Lee Jihun is a Navy SEAL. They didn’t have to include this detail - you’d probably have to be quite familiar with the military to recognise it straight away, and I doubt that even most Korean fans would be able to recognise it, because I can tell you for a fact that I wouldn’t be able to recognise the equivalent for my own country. Someone on the production team decided this, and I want to give them a big kiss on the mouth, because now it’s confirmed that the sweet little Jihun we saw grew up to be totally badass after his abusive father passed away. I sincerely hope that it was a good life that led him to joining this branch of the military, and not some combination of horrible factors that pushed him into joining one of the most intense and dangerous branches… hm. I’m not going to dwell on that, actually. You can all make your own conclusions here.
Now… to the Kingdom. *sigh.* This is where things start to get more vague and confusing. I’m going to start with ranks first, and then go onto what they were doing as one big section because, spoiler alert, I haven’t got any sort of concrete idea.
Lee Gon:
His rank is easiest to determine, because Choi Gitae says it explicitly when they met at his father’s funeral in Ep4. I cross-referenced this with the closed-caption Korean subtitles, and everything adds up nicely: though he’s the Commander-in-Chief of all the armed forces in the Kingdom, thanks to his position as the monarch, while he was actually serving, he rose to the rank of Daewi, or Lieutenant - the highest rank of the junior officers - before leaving the navy.
Jo Yeong:
When we see Yeong in his navy uniform in Ep6, this is what we can see:
Once again, that same pattern emerges on his epaulettes of two thick stripes surrounding a thin stripe - he’s a Soryeong, a Lieutenant Commander. This means that Yeong ranked one rank higher than Gon before he left the navy, which is something that brings me quite a lot of joy.
However, something I like even more than that is Yeong’s current title, as the leader of the Royal Guard. We all know him and love him as Captain Jo, but in Korean he’s referred to as 조영 대장 - Jo Yeong Daejang. This is what Gon calls him in the iconic “Are you having fun, Captain Jo?” and you can also see that title of Daejang on his character page on the official TKEM website. On WordReference, this is what happens if I search for 대장:
Ignoring the results about other things, it doesn’t seem to mean “Captain” explicitly, it’s more like a general kind of leader title. His rank isn’t necessarily “Captain,” it’s whatever Daejang is equivalent to. So… how good is a Daejang? Looking at the South Korean armed forces, in the army, air force, and marine corps, Daejang is equivalent to General, and in the navy, Daejang is equivalent to Admiral. To put this into context a little better, the only rank in the South Korean navy higher than Daejang is Wonsu, and this rank only exists on paper and has never been given to any officer of the South Korean armed forces. To achieve this rank of Wonsu, you’re appointed from the rank of Daejang when you have “distinguished achievements.”
In conclusion: Yeong has an incredibly high rank in the armed forces, second only really to Gon himself, assuming no one from the Kingdom has ever been appointed the rank of Wonsu either. However… there’s a first time for everything, and though I’m only speculating and of course could never say anything for sure, if anyone was going to get those distinguished achievements needed to be a Wonsu, it would be our Jo Yeong Daejang.
Choi Gitae:
I’m including him briefly because I have a bone to pick with the subtitles. In English, he’s Captain Choi. In Korean, Gon refers to him as Hamjang, which, as far as I can tell, doesn’t exist in the South Korean navy of our universe. In the Korean subtitles in Ep4, he’s named as 최 소령, Choi Soryeong, and he’s just… he’s not that. Let’s take a look at some pictures:
The epaulettes on the first picture and the star badge on the second tell us that his rank should be this:
He’s a Junjang, equivalent to a Rear Admiral (lower half). Not a Captain, and not a Lieutenant Commander. As for the Hamjang/Junjang disparity, I’m going to suggest that Hamjang is the Kingdom of Corea’s equivalent to the Republic’s Junjang.
So, what was everyone doing in the navy?
The only clue we have is a badge:
This is from Yeong’s uniform, but in Ep6 Choi Gitae was wearing the same, and Gon was wearing a gold version of it. However, for the life of me, I can’t seem to figure out what it is! The design seems to be that of a ship sailing through the waters, but that just gives ✨navy✨ in a general sense. Browsing google images, I’ve noticed the same golden badge that Gon wears on other high ranking members of the South Korean navy, so maybe it signifies a high rank? Or maybe it just means that the wearer is in the navy? I don’t know! I can’t work it out! What it tells us at least is, if Yeong isn’t wearing a “specialised” badge like Jihun… it’s unlikely that he served in any kind of special forces… which I feel is a piece of information that might break some hearts in the fandom as their headcanons shatter into pieces. I’m disappointed too, because when I saw Yeong’s badge without paying attention to any of the other characters, I thought that the two shapes on the sides looked a little like submariner dolphins, so I’ve spent half a year or so thinking that’s what Yeong did in the navy, before I realised that Gon and Choi Gitae had the exact same badge.
So, if anyone has been bothered enough to read this far and also happens to be a Korean military buff, I would love you forever if you could tell me exactly what this badge means, and whether it gives us any indication of what Yeong or Gon or anyone else was doing in the navy. However, maybe it’s good that it’s unclear, because that leaves fic writers plenty of room to wonder about what Gon and Yeong were doing in the military - whether they were doing different things, strengthening their bond as best bros doing the same thing, and if you’re on the same side of this fandom as me, whether they were repressing some big feelings at seeing each other in their military uniforms, or whether they were engaging in certain activities that are maybe stereotypical of sailors cooped together on the same boat without women to spend their nights with… there’s plenty of room for interpretation :D

I have had brainrot since the animation so I'm still thinking.
Theory talk + dynamic ideas stemmed from a video I saw.
I've watched a video recently that compared Rondo Across Countless Kalpas to Lament of the Fallen (not very well as it had only the start of the fight in Lament)
And like yeah it's to compare how each Mei variant fights,
But like one is a mental representation of the brutality of trauma, the other is heartbreak and pain over self destruction over the sake of another.
And saying Black Swan's situation is like Kiana's is certainly an interesting (I mean that in a strained way) to look at things. Like I feel we aren't going to get a lot of exploration into their dynamic in the actual game because i just have a feeling they might one and done this connection outside of hints.
But, thinking how Acheron seems to be a Self Annihilator and sacrificing her memories for the power of nihility and Swan is literally a Memokeeper, all about memories, that Kiana comparison could lead to very unique dynamic ideas. Like I take that as implying Swan could be the one to help Acheron. In the description we got of Self Annihilators some seek cures and to help others find it. What would happen if one had a Memokeeper to help? Remembrance Vs Nihility as one is to remember all that existed as it all has meaning and the other is to discard all that exists for it has no meaning.
If Swan is the one who can help Acheron, would she? Or is she too startled? Would she feel it's not her fight to take? Would she turn her back let Acheron fall fully to the void? And if she did try, would it hurt her too? We saw what happened when she dived in once. So wouldn't more deliberate attempts to learn almost destroy her?
Acheswan is certainly something to think about. It could be a one and done time where they go separate ways, or it could become a complex weaving mess.
I cannot wait to get to see.

i really liked my tags on this post so i wanted to touch them up and post them as a stand alone! i ended up adding quite a bit to this ''':)
What artistic skill does Izzy possess?
I think he has a lot of 'practical' artsy skills. he’s decent at sewing (mending your own clothes isn't just useful, it's almost a requirement at sea with limited possessions and resources) he's probably decent at braiding hair from having to splice rope- simply anything with roots in being useful I think he has done enough to be decent at by this point in his life.
Singing comes into this as well, holding a rhythm is important for certain sailing tasks, and while I think he can sing in ways that don't translate to shanties, I don't think he has utilised this in a long long time (so excited that we are apparently getting an Izzy singing scene in s2!!!! I need him to know he can have fun)
Another thing is I think he was a really good tattoo artist! I don't actually see him as having the creativity to come up with interesting and unique designs but I do think he is excellent at the act itself, and at copying requested designs. you need a swallow? an anchor? a ship? any common sailors tattoo? he can absolutely do it and it will probably be the best tattoo you have. it was always a mark of honour if you could convince him to do yours on the Queen Anne- he was very busy and didn't often do them, and definitely wouldn't do them if he didn't respect you. He's done a lot of Ed's 'quality' tattoos (though I think Ed also does a lot on himself), he's done tattoos for Fang, and Ivan, and he will do them for the rest of the kraken crew in the future. (he will even do one for Lucius one day, one of his own pieces of art as long as its not an Ed face or a dick. They understand each other now)
anything else? I don't know, I see him very much as, he won't let himself do things if they aren't practical. his canon whittling is as close as he gets and that's more of a 'thing to do with your hands while watching the deck' kind of thing. have knife will whittle
I think ultimately, Izzy doesn't let himself do things for himself. if you love something, if you have a soft spot, it can be targeted, taken away.
I do think he maybe dances though. He always plays it off as something Ed forces him to do when they're drunk/on shore but... he loves it- the motion; the reliance on another partner and the intimate understanding of exactly what they're gonna do next? I think he would love that actually.
I think dancing might be the one thing he always does for fun. He never lets himself have it, but if Ed demands a partner? Yes, of course, anything for his Captain.
(Ed always demands a partner. he likes dancing well enough but he likes seeing Izzy do it more- he knows Izzy will never do it on his own, he understands why, but Ed is Blackbeard. Nobody fucks with Blackbeard- and if he wants to dance? if he wants his first mate to dance? they're fucking dancing.)
but that's not the truth of the situation, really.
It always takes him a second to let his guard down, but he relaxes into it. He lets himself loose in a way Ed only sees when he's deep into the rhythm of a swordfight. And perhaps it's the same, to him- finding the flow of the battle, of the music. Feeling his partner, understanding them and being understood in return? It's all the same- but dancing is safe. Dancing is fun. In a swordfight there are stakes- and he loves the stakes, he loves that this thing that means everything to him matters, but sometimes, just sometimes, it really is nice to move like that in a way that doesn't matter.
And when they really get going- all twirls and jumps and frankly being a little ridiculous, Izzy laughs. A deep belly laugh, a kind of joy you didn't think was possible from him. But here he is, letting go at last. He laughs and he smiles and he feels such joy, the rest of the world melts away, and it is just him and his partner, dancing.
(later- much, much later, a man will play a battle song over their raids, a jaunty little tune that throws off everyone they fight against, and Izzy gets to dance, and fight, and feel free, unburdened by the weight that he's carried with him his whole life. They'll dance after too, and he will have finally found a place where he completely belongs)
(if you liked this, can I recommend Talking Bodies by ItsClydeBitches, i feel like that fic fits the themes of dancing incredibly well)

What do you think of Carlos’ Italian? Has he got a good accent? He sounds mesmerising! wish I could understand him when he talks.
Hello Anon! Sorry for the late reply!
Carlos speaks amazingly in Italian, he has a good accent, he sounds much better than other people I know whose first language is Spanish, but you can still tell that he’s Spanish.
He makes some mistakes but very few tbh. He tends to sometimes mix Italian and Spanish sounds or words; for example, I heard him say in many occasion a word that you can hear in the video I’ve posted of his interview at the French GP (HERE) at 5:05; he wants to use a word that in this context means “whatever”, which is: “qualsiasi” /kwalˈsi.a.si/ that in Spanish is "cualquiera" /kwalˈkjeɾa/, but you can hear that Carlos uses a mix that sounds like “cualquie-siasi” which is just so cute 🥰.
That’s such a little thing tough; he uses words that are part of the actual spoken language and he does it in such a natural way! He also knows many terms that are used just in the f1 world that he must have learnt by speaking with Italian people in the paddock because you can’t study those on a book. So, yeah, he’s pretty brilliant in my opinion.
Tbh I’m always amazed when I hear drivers speaking Italian, so many of them speak in such a natural and proficient way; Charles has almost no accent, sometimes he makes mistakes but he speaks better Italian than English, Alonso is almost like Carlos, Ocon is not perfect but fluent, Pierre and Daniel are not that good but they still try sometimes, Daniel is just so much fun to hear but it can be a little bit embarrassing, not for how he speaks but for what he says 😂.
Nico Rosberg needs a special mention though, he is just WOW! I couldn’t believe it when I first heard him speak. His accent is so on point! You can tell that he grew up with people that are from the norther part of Italy because that’s where I live and HE HAS MY ACCENT, it’s so weird because he can mess up words or tenses so that you know that he’s not 100% Italian but you could never tell that he’s German!
Back to Carlos, I think he has improved a lot in these last two years working with Italian people in Italy, he just keeps getting better and I agree with you Anon, he’s just so mesmerizing to hear and watch ✨✨✨✨❤️.
I didn’t mean to write an essay about drivers and Italian..oops..thank you anon for your question! Next time I’ll try and be less verbose 😅

Micah can generally tell when one tries to lie to or manipulate xem, have selfish intentions with xem, etcetera. It's not meant to be like a "hahah yeah, my character is so smart and powerful than yours", but, it's simply realistic based on the experiences that they've gone through with them having many toxic friendship across xyr life, got into nine relationships which most were abusive, had a lot of horrible foster parents, and the Starwake System as a whole have faced all forms of abuse across their time. In addition, Micah was a private detective when xe was in xyr mid to late twenties, and xyr position as a Saint continues to place xem in positions where xe interacts with dangerous people, so xe had a lot of experiences and knowledge in interacting with dishonest and manipulative individuals. Phobos and especially Philos are great liars and manipulators that they had to be so the system can manage or retreat potentially dangerous situations successfully, so Micah learnt a lot of things from them as well.
A lot of people are easy to underestimate Micah and view them as naive and foolish, taking xyr love and hope and kindness as xyr ultimate weaknesses, but xe is so much more analytic and observant and wise than one can ever think of them to be. There are infinite aspects in how one present themself and perform to others that Micah could take notes of and would connect with xyr personal experiences and knowledges: Speeches, body languages, demeanors, gestures, expressions; how long one have known another, how much one knows another, where they met and why they're still in touch and how they maintain contact; so forth. Micah is so painfully aware and in tune with everyone and everything and everywhere xe's in contact with.
The scariest thing about this whole information, Micah is willing to let xemself be lied to and manipulated with so xe can see how long the other party would attempt to take xem as their advantage while gathering more evidences against them. As well as part of Micah hopes the other will eventually see a fault in what they're doing and be better. Micah isn't the kind to be outspoken and confrontational when managing these sorts of cases, xe's quiet and passive to keep that oblivious nature, but when there is a case when the other party is clearly attempting to harm xem physically or mentally / emotionally, then that's usually when Micah will confront them or simply leave them, depending on who the individual is and what they've been doing to xem.
Still, Micah remains kind to the end because xe just doesn't like to be disrespectful and aggressive, it's draining and even terrifying to xemself ( xe's more scared for them than of them or xemself ), even if the other doesn't deserve xyr kindness, but regardless, Micah will be beyond disappointed if the other continues to try to use xem. Not sad or angry. Just disappointed, which is worst given how much xe xemself tries to be most patient and understanding with another, only for this sort of treatment to continue anyway.

Lorgo (Lorcan x Hugo) for the ask game?
likeeeee idk where to put them 😭 maybe if the scamander twins had ONE moment in canon to be seen. maybe if hugo had ONE actual line i could put them on the y axis. i cant justify it at all besides they probably would have a good relationship and know each other for a long while thanks to their parents, even if they were not super close. how much lorgo makes sense and compels me is also a little dependent on what age lorcan is, which was never confirmed. jkr has said she imagined luna to be a “late mother,” so people assume lorcan and lysander was born after romione and hinny’s kids. which would have had to be after 2008. on the wiki it says that lorcan and lysander’s birthday could go up to 2014, which is a big range lol. of course, lorgo makes less sense if there’s a six year age difference and they had known each other for a very long time.
then again theres ways to circle around this. he could be the same age as hugo, or a few years younger. or you may believe that lorcan and hugo didn’t meet each other until they were older, so the potential age difference doesn’t matter. so yeah. not damning evidence, just inconclusive.
it terms of compelling, im a nextgen girlie and lorgo is like the only hugo and lorcan ship that could make sense to me. but i have a conflicting headcanon so (*cough* hugo is aroace to me *cough*). but yeah thats it. theres no tangible reason to ship or not ship it.
