5. Which WIP is first on your list to complete this year? Will you post a snippet?

Gauging by the amount i've already worked on it over the last 6 months, and being optimistic about my continuing momentum on it, I'm gonna aim high and say How Far Ahead The Road Has Gone. Of my multi-chapter WIPs, it's the one I feel most confident about getting to finish before the year is out, but that might happen next November for all I know lol. I don't really have any one-shots or shorter WIPs that I've been working on and are anywhere close to posting. So for the time being it is, and remains, my main project. And sure you can have a snippet! How about the opening lines of the next chapter: “Thirteen dwarves I have captured here,” King Thranduil drawled, slowly studying the party of half-poisoned, spider-web covered dwarves. He walked slowly back and forth, looking at each member of the party. “Thirteen dwarves my hunters found in the woods, and yet all the way here, you clamor for another. You cry for one left behind. Who?”

11. Would you like to try any new fanfic genres or tropes this year?

In the general sense that I'm always down to try new things if the inspiration strikes, I would like to try and explore new tropes and genres. But I don't really know off the top of my head which ones I might like to try most. I might play around with some different AUs, as AUs are always fun. But considering I've written a fair number of AUs over the years, I'm not sure they count as something New.

21. Will you try writing software, like Scrivener or those programs that won’t let you stop writing?

Hmm... probably not. My writing purposes are served pretty well just using plain old word documents. The closest I'll get to having a writing Focus like that would be setting sprint or pomodoro timers when I really want to buckle down and focus on something for a bit or if I have to meet a deadline.

(one) How many words have you written this year? Only on Ao3, 55,125 words, but 3 of those are multi-chaptered works with the majority of the works being written in 2018-2019, so I'd say closer to -30,000 maybe, as I've mainly been writing one-shots. A separate 2,500 for my piece in the Corazine.

10. What work was the quickest to write? Probably the pieces for the Heart Pirates Week, or the MarLaw I wrote for the Rarepair month. I had written the Heart pirate week pieces ahead of time, but they are ficlets, so were intentionally short. Also, a piece about Hakugan that I wrote for a prompt on tumblr.

(Spoilers for chapter 1081; Egghead arc spoilers) Bioluminescent Hearts was written quickly but I spent a lot of time getting it up to speed once I'd published it.

27. What do you listen to while writing?

When I really need to concentrate on something, nothing, or music at a very low hum. Preferably something really lowfi (Mogwai. I know they're noisy, but they're indistinct in many ways), or Thelonius Monk or Mozart's reqium-ish, but if I'm just getting ideas on the page, I just stream my fave indie radio on quietly in the background.

One could psychoanalyze him, consider the possibility that it only took less than ten words (No one gets hurt if you hand 'em over) to completely destroy his entire world. They could point fingers at the eulogy in which no one had anything to say at all, too consumed with the cries of an orphan to figure out what to say that would convey the same devastation.

There is also the possibility that his tendency for few words sprung forth from all the time he spent alone, consumed in his mission, his vengeance, his need and desire to build up a rotten city that it left so little time to speak, to even use his voice when his mind was his most important aide. He's sure many people could give their opinions on why Bruce Wayne doesn't speak much, or why Batman is so stoic, or give a reason for as to why his voice always sound so gruff and underused.

But, he discovered very early on that a great deal could be said with little; why give a speech when all he needs to say is, "Good work," to convey how much he truly values and cares for those around him?

by purely 2024 standards, i think i worked on both step 2 and everything rots in the sun for about the same amount of time (~5 months each). if we're going by fic tho then definitely step 2. that took 8 months to write.

the heart is just an organ lol. while i was technically kicking the idea around for 3-ish months, actual prose-to-posting time was 4 days.

favorite thing i wrote:

ohh tough question, because everything i wrote this year is a "favorite" for different reasons. i think i'll always be extremely proud of step 2 though (and both step 1/step 2 in general tbh), but everything rots was a feat unto itself.

its very interesting to look back on the two fics i bookended the year with, bc theyre both extremely dark but they have sort of... opposite theses. step 2 is about being unable to focus on the joy of something thats alive because you know it will die, and everything rots is about doing everything you can to cling to the possibility of joy even though you know in the end, itll mean death.

favorite things i read:

how dare you make me choose!! i read so many wonderful fics by so many incredible writers this year, but theundiagnosable's impiety duology is one of those stories i keep thinking about. its a very tangentially/loosely-canon luzo au thatll just flay you alive.

writing goals for 2025:

i actually dont have any real plans to write much in 2025 beyond maybe 2-3 small fics, so we'll see what the future holds. it might be a quiet year tho. (watch--ill say this and then post another 90k beast in july like i did in 2023 or smth. surprise us both)

Luffy looks again at the bitemarks that he left on Zoro’s wrist. Zoro’s usually hurt, one way or another. Sometimes it’s definitely been Luffy’s fault too, but the bitemarks feel different. They ain’t like normal bruises or cuts. There’s something about seeing the shape of his teeth in Zoro’s skin. Something about the colors, the slightly paler insides of Zoro’s wrists, and the blueness of his veins, and the dark pink color of where Luffy bit him.

Okay, this one's from my current-fixation Hobbit fic. In which names are discussed and Dwarves have opinions TM about them.

"Have you begun thinking of names yet?" "A few, yes," Bilbo looked down at her belly, and cradled the child there for a moment. "I suppose I better make a decision before the poor thing shows up. Bad luck to be born nameless, you know." She sighed wearily. "I quite like Belladonna for a girl. That was my mother's name, and I think it would suit her granddaughter. She had a heart for adventures, my mother, and I think considering where this child is going to be born inheriting that name would suit her. But for a boy... I can't decide. I loved my father, but I wouldn't give a child the name Bungo. As for other good Hobbit names, unfortunately every time I think of one, I remember someone attached to it, and usually I never liked him. I could use a family name. Usually you only use family names of dead relatives. Unless, of course, a child is being named after one of their parents But I’m not so keen on ‘Bilbo Baggins II’. I could name him after my grandfather, Old Took, but that name comes with quite a legacy, and I can’t possibly imagine calling my baby Gerontius." “Gerontius? That’s a name meant for an old man!” Nori laughed. “Precisely.” Bilbo sighed and resumed her braiding. “Traditionally, Hobbit girls are named after flowers and other plants, sometimes gemstones, boys can be named after plants as well, trees most often. He could be an Ash or Rowan, maybe Aspen or Willow…” Bilbo picked up one of the many acorns that were scattered all around the ground. She thought about it for a moment, thought about taking home an acorn and planting it atop Bag End, a strong oak tree to grow with her child, to shade and shelter them. ‘Oak’ she didn’t feel would be a suitable name on its own but perhaps if it was changed a bit… absently she muttered, “Nordh.” “That’s a strong one,” Ori agreed softly, glancing up from his sketch. “What’s that one?” Dori asked. “It’s Elvish for—” “Ugh! Don’t give the babe an Elvish name! The Company will never forgive you.” “Excuse you!” Bilbo pelted Dori with the acorn in her hands. “I can name my child whatever I want.” “You give him an Elvish name, and we’re leaving you behind.” Nori threatened. He held up his hands to shield his face from the pelted acorns. “Imagine what it would look like, a Hobbit and her Elvish-named babe, traveling in the company of Dwarves. We’d have to hide you from everyone out of shame.” “You’re absolutely hopeless, the lot of you. So fragile as to fall to pieces over a baby’s name.” Bilbo petulantly flicked one last acorn, which bounced off Nori’s nose. “It’s not natural,” Dori continued the good-natured teasing, “Giving a non-Elf an Elvish name.” That earned him an acorn bounced off his forehead and Bilbo’s insistence that it was perfectly natural.
