Rick's eyes go wide for a moment at the mention of the Utrom. Oh damn, he doesn't even know where to start from, let alone what to say. Having too much to talk about was even worse than having too little. At least, in the latter case, he could have made up something vague but convincing. Instead, he's stuck with the paranoia of slipping and saying something he shouldn't.

A hesitant sound leaves his throat, as he tries, quite lamely, to buy himself some time to think. One of his hands rubs goes to rub the back of his neck, making his already evident nervousness even more obvious.

"Oh, uh, B-Bishop...he's a great guy! I-I've met a lot of people during my life, b-but no one quite like him, y-you know?"

Lame and unoriginal. What an amazing start...not.

"W-What I mean is...Most people see me a-as stuck-up and too rigid and maybe even boring, j-just because I'm dedicated to my job. E-Even among my colleagues, t-they make fun of me for that more often than not."

Which is annoying as hell, to the point that, at times, he finds himself forced to hold back a petty or violent reaction.

"W-With Kor-...Bishop I don't have to worry o-or feel out of place or...embarrassed for my priorities."

Not that he's ashamed of putting his duty before almost everything else, but at times the assholes he shares his space with every day make it hard not to feel somewhat amiss.

"H-He gets it. W-We're on the same page on that, h-he is just as serious about his work as I am. S-So, he's very understanding if I have to cancel at the last minute, o-or can't do certain stuff...an-and he also sees how special the times we make to hang out is."

Has his voice gotten a little too soft as he spoke that last sentence? Shit, he hopes not. He knows that they aren't just friends, but...he isn't sure of how far he can go and how open he can be with his feelings.

Shaking his head lightly, the guard dismisses those thoughts. He can linger on them or he will for sure end up making a fool of himself.

"I-I'm genuinely glad we met. An-And I don't say this about just anyone."

He won't say it out loud, but the truth is that, aside from AR, there's no one else he's truly close to. He loves his daughter and granddaughter, but they don't know all that matters about him.

"H-He's...I trust him. I-I feel like I can be myself with him, a-and he won't judge me. E-Even if he disagrees or doesn't approve. I-It's...nice. I'm constantly under pressure an-and I've never learnt to let loose in a healthy way, but...I-I can do it with him."

Bishop is a safe place for him, even more than his reckless best friend. And it's something Rick never wants to lose, now that he has found it.

The Most Powerful Hack to Make Your Readers Cry

You’ve seen it all: show, don’t tell, plant a visceral image in the reader’s brain of the environment/character, write a complex character arc with lots of growth and setbacks, establish deep relationships, high stakes, etc. 

All the advice for making readers cry I’ve seen so far is basically that list. But, while those things are absolutely important, I find that the thing that always does the trick, whether as a tipping point or in and of itself, is this: 

THE CALLBACK! 

Before we move on, this is an ANALYSIS heavy post, so all the book + show examples contain spoilers!!

So, what do I mean by a “callback?” Think of Chekhov’s gun, but, here, you use the gun to pierce your reader’s heart. As a refresher for anyone who needs it, Chekhov’s gun is just a rule in writing that anything you introduce in the book should play some role in the plot.

Specifically, the name comes from the example that if a reader introduces a gun in the first act, it MUST go off later, (maybe, say, in the third act). For example, in the TV show Breaking Bad, the protagonist Walter White prepares a vial of poison (ricin) that he wanted to use to eliminate an opponent early on in the series. After the assassination attempt falls through, the ricin makes an appearance again in the very last episode of the show, when Walt finally uses it to kill another opponent. 

Got that? Alright, onto the examples of successful, tearjerking callbacks: 

1. The Last Olympian (Rick Riordan); “Family, Luke, you promised.” 

Context: The character Annabeth says this line. Years ago, Annabeth had run away from home, and Luke had effectively adopted her into a found family with another kid named Thalia. Common reason for leaving home = parental trauma! Yay! He promised Annabeth that they would be each other’s “family” from now on. 

Now: Kronos, the antagonist titan, has possessed the demigod Luke and uses his body to strike Annabeth, injuring her. She’s also holding a dagger that Luke had given her when she joined his “family.”

Significance: her words + the dagger are a mental + physical reminder to Luke of his promise. They force him to recognize the sheer degree of his current betrayal by bringing him back to a different time. The fact that their found family only happened because of parental trauma bringing them together makes it worse—Luke felt abandoned by his Olympian father, Hermes. Now, he realizes that he basically did the equivalent to Annabeth by joining the titans. 

2. Les Miserables (Victor Hugo); Jean Valjean’s death 

Context:  At the beginning of the book, the bishop had caught Valjean trying to steal candlesticks to sell. Instead of handing him over to the police, the bishop told the police that he had given them to Valjean, saving him from arrest and showing him mercy. This changed his life forever, kickstarting his character redemption arc. 

Now: Jean Valjean dies surrounded by his loved ones, remembered as a benevolent man who bettered thousands of lives. He’s surrounded by light from candlesticks that once belonged to a bishop.

Context: Valjean had once taken in an impoverished woman named Fantine, showing her mercy and promising to take care of her daughter, Cosette, after Fantine died. Valjean then rescued Cosette from abusive quasi-foster parents (it’s a long story), raising her as his own daughter. This furthered his arc by allowing him to finally understand how unconditionally loving someone feels. 

Now: Valjean describes Fantine to Cosette, who never knew her mother. 

Significance: Both examples throw readers back to much earlier points in the story before the completion of Valjean’s character arc. In a way, this final scene feels like an external manifestation of his kindness paying off; both he and the reader feels a sense of accomplishment, relief, and just a general “OMG WE MADE IT.” Readers don’t feel cheated, because they were with Valjean every step of his 1,400 page arc. The weight of it all just crashes down on you...

3. Your Lie in April (anime); Kaori’s letter after she dies

Context: Kaori’s entire plot significance is that she helps Kousei, a piano prodigy who can’t play piano anymore due to traumatic parental memories associated with it, play again—but also, just to help him enjoy life again after a turbulent upbringing. She meets him a year before she dies of a medical condition, and her free spirit + confidence influences him to find beauty in life and music again. They basically do a crap ton of crazy funny stuff together lol

Now: Kaori has died, and she leaves a letter to him. Among other general confessions and thoughts, she references things they did and memories they shared: she says, “sorry we couldn’t eat all those canelés,” reminisces about  jumping with him off a small bridge into the stream below, “racing each other alongside the train,” singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star as they rode the bike together, etc.

Significance: Yes, the nature of the letter is just sad because she’s revealing that she loved him all along, apologizing for not being able to spend more time with him, lying that she didn’t like him (to spare his feelings b/c she knew she would die soon), etc. BUT, these small details highlight exactly how many experiences they shared, and the depth of their relationship. Thus, they emphasize the significance of her death and the emptiness it leaves behind. 

4. Arcane (show); “I thought, maybe you could love me like you used to, even though I’m different.” 

Context: Character Jinx says this in the last episode to her now estranged older sister, Vi. Without going into the crazy complex plot, basically, orphans Vi and Jinx used to care for each other before a bunch of crap went down that got them separated. They then grew up on opposite political sides; Jinx grows up on the side of the underbelly city rebellion, and Vi grows up working on the side of the richer city that essentially oppresses the undercity. Thus begins the development of their opposing viewpoints and work environments, to the point where they always meet on opposite sides of a political battle, never able to come together as a family or understand each other again. 

Now: After a super dramatic confrontation, Jinx reveals that although she wants Vi to love her like she did before their separation, she knows it’s not possible because “[Vi] changed too.” She finishes with, “so, here’s to the new us” before blowing up a political council meeting a few blocks down filled with people Vi sides with. Oops! This cleanly seals the fate of their relationship as something basically irreparable.  

Significance: This callback isn’t through literal flashbacks or items like in the previous examples. Jinx’ lines are enough to bring back images of their childhood to the audience’s mind. Now, the audience subconsciously places this image of: 1) two sisters so different, hurt, and torn apart, right next to 2) the image of two sisters as innocent children who loved each other and would care for each other no matter what. 

Why do callbacks work so well? 

If you’ve noticed something in common with all of them, you’re right: they remind audience of a time BEFORE the characters have come so far on their arcs, developed, and put on so much more emotional baggage. 

Callbacks force the audience to SUDDENLY and IMMEDIATELY feel the weight of everything that’s happened. The character’s anguish and overwhelming emotions become the audience’s in this moment. Callbacks are a vehicle for the juxtaposition of worlds, before and after significant development. 

This works because we, as mortals, fear IMPERMANENCE the most. We fear LOSS. For us, time gone is time we will never get back; callbacks make us face that exact fact through a fictional character. A lost moment, time period, or even part of oneself may hurt as much as losing a loved one, and nothing makes humans grieve more than the realization of a loss. A callback slaps the audience in the face with the fact that something was lost; loss hurts so much because almost 99% of the time, what’s gone is gone forever. 

Of course, a good callback requires good previous character development, stakes, imagery, and all that jazz, but I thought I’d highlight this specifically because of how under covered it is.

I’ve been binging general media lately: I finished Death Note, Your Lie in April, and Tokyo Ghoul all within like a month (FIRST ANIMES I”VE EVER WATCHED!!), reread lots of Les Miserables, analyzed a bunch of past shows like Breaking Bad, watched a bunch of My Little Pony, worked to fix up my old writing... and that’s not even all! The amount of times I’ve CRIED while enjoying the above media and so much more honestly just inspired this post. 

Like, no joke, my eyes were almost always swollen during this period whenever I hung out with my friends and it was so embarrassing help 

Personally, I just find that this method works super well for me, and I watched a bunch of reaction videos to these above scenes (and read book reviews on the book scenes I mentioned), and it seemed that just about everyone cried during these parts. That’s when I realizes that the callback might also just be a universal thing.

Rick's eyes go wide as saucers at Bishop's surprise and, especially, at the Utrom's following statement. Oh shit. He's been a fucking idiot. Why the hell hadn't he realised that the card couldn't have been made by his friend? Of course the other would have never spread around something so intimate. He should have known. Hell, he does know.

...If only he had listened to his reason, as he usually does, instead of letting hope tricking him yet again.

"Uh, y-yeah, damn, I-I guess that...i-it's..."

Well, fuck, he doesn't even what to say to that. On one hand, he's glad that Bishop reacting well, all considered, and even expressing fondness for their relationship. Their friendship, he had to remind himself.

On the other, however, he feels like he has outed himself as much as he had while he was under the effect of that weird love drug.

"I...I really appreciate you too. Us. I-I mean, our partnership," he ends up saying, still tripping on his words. "I-It's...You get me. M-My work ethic an-and...my loyalty to my duty and...y-you're fine with it. That's...great. An-And rare, and...if someone is lucky between the two of us? T-That's me."

Good, he has reciprocated, unloaded some of his feelings. Now, it's time to make a tactical retreat.

"Oh, d-damn, look at that!" He waves his phone, too quickly for Bishop to see what's truly one it. "M-My best friend...he's a fuckin' troublemaker, y-you wouldn't believe...He...I-I need to...yeah. Get him out of troubles, y-you know? S-So, see you soon I hope!"

And, without waiting for an answer, he's darting away, almost as if his life depending on it.

[♗]   "Oh, what is this?" Bishop musters the card that was not so casually slid his way with a slight frown. "SR, I don't remember preparing a card like this about me. Which is peculiar because I would not ever forget handing something like this out to the public." The initial confusion about the card aside, which clearly was someone playing a prank on him, he still can't help but smile a little bit over it. He doesn't even feel a need to investigate this strange case. "But to see that we have a lot of traits in common gives me a very warm and content feeling. I could not ask for a better partner out there."

“Please sit down, Deacon Chappel,” said Bishop Knight. “Here you go. Your profile says you like your coffee black.”

“Thank you, Your Grace. You’re very kind.”

The lighting in the office was subdued. There were no windows, but there was a second door in a dark corner next to one of the bookcases. A couple of rubber tree plants added a little color. Bishop Knight sat down slowly behind his large mahogany desk.

“So you are interested in the position of Public Relations Director?”

“Yes, Your Grace.”

“And you think you can do better than Deacon Smith.”

“Ever so much, Your Grace.”

“You’re very young,” observed the Bishop. “Deacon Smith has much more experience.”

“I have new ideas, Your Grace.”

Knight steepled his fingers and frowned thoughtfully. “But Deacon Smith seems to have done a very good job these past few years. Our polling is better than it’s ever been. We are well represented on several popular TV shows. Several of our political candidates have performed favorably in Boston and Presque Isle.”

Chappel did not quite pound his fist on the Bishop’s desk. “It is not enough!” he said firmly. “For too many centuries has the House of Bast been lumped in with the Unspeakable Cults. We are more accepted now because we strive to be inoffensive, yet the late-night comedy shows still make offensive jokes at our expense. We must not beg, we must demand. Demand justice for our lost generations.”

“But in doing so, do we not risk alienating the very people who have supported us?”

“They are not innocent, Your Grace. They carry the guilt of their forefathers just as we carry the pain of ours. They should be made uncomfortable. They should not be absolved. They owe us and they must pay!”

Bishop Knight sighed thoughtfully and nodded. “You have given me much to consider. But I do have other candidates that I must interview, my son. I will be in touch with you when I have made my decision.”

Standing quickly, Deacon Chappel bowed. “Yes, Your Grace,” he said. “Have a most pleasant day.” The office door clicked softly behind him as he departed.

For several moments, the office was silent save for the ticking of a clock somewhere among the shelves. Then the door in the back corner opened. A black silhouette, very tall and angular, stepped through but remained cloaked in the shadows.

“Your opinion, Bishop?” it asked, in a voice as deep as it was penetrating.

“His ideas will fail,” the Bishop replied without hesitation. “His approach is counterproductive. He has not the slightest understanding of how to nurture our fragile relationship with mainstream culture.”

“Agreed,” said the dark figure.

“All the progress we have made will be lost,” continued the Bishop. “There will be division and conflict, and all the old prejudices and hatreds will return with a vengeance. There will be bloodshed, sir. Decades of bloodshed.”

“Agreed,” repeated Nyarlathotep. “Let us then proceed.”

Why is he so bad at this? He's never been a charmer, not even in his golden years, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he has to embarrass himself every fucking time. He's too old for that, he should be at least a little smooth. He might not have a lot of experience, but he has some. He has enough.

And yet, there he is again, stumbling over his words and making a fool of himself in front of the person he likes. He's tempted to call Bishop his "romantic partner", but he's not sure they aren't there yet. Officially, at least.

...Which is probably part of what's making things so hard.

"T-That's...uh, I-I guess that what I-I'm trying to say is..." He tries again, biting back a groan as he suddenly realises that, in truth, he has no idea of what he was trying to say. He has gotten so worked up and lost in his head that he has forgotten why he was talking in the first place.

"...Uh...I..."

And that's when the Bishop cuts him off. Rick blinks in confusion when the Utrom trails off, but the feeling quickly turns into flustered surprise when the alien's tentacles take a gentle hold of his face and he's pulled in a kiss.

The guard's eyes go wide for a moment, but then he can't stop himself from melting into the contact. This is much easier than saying...whatever he had meant to say, and not just that. It's more comfortable, more meaningful, more right. He's not sure if it can convey his thoughts, but it does convey...something. A honest sentiment, no matter if it can be named or not.

Rick isn't sure of how long the contact lasts, but he would have gladly remained in that moment forever...if not for the sound of a phone camera going off.

Startled, he breaks the kiss, frantically looking around until his gaze lands on the smug figure leaning against the door jamb. Son of a bitch.

"W-What...AR!" He splutters, not knowing if he's feeling more flustered or more enraged. "What the actual fuck?! W-Who...I-I can't fuckin' believe you!"

Of course, his words are met with nothing but a sly smirk and a wink.

"A-And this is going in my personal SR's embarrassing shit folder," the black marker dealer teases in a sing-song tone, waving his phone and waggling his eyebrows. "H-Have fun, lovebirds!"

And with that, he's gone, leaving Rick to throw his hands in the air with an exasperated growl. Oh, he is so going to kill the motherfucker this time.

his mother insists upon having a going away party and ben doesn’t have the heart to tell her no. it feels inappropriate and a little ridiculous, considering he’s been in the army for close to ten years already and has been deployed before. she’s done this before - he’s pretty sure they even used the same caterer before he went to manila.

it’s february though and she always says how february is so depressing once everyone has recovered from the holidays. just a little party, she says - a few friends, the bishops of course, whatever family is kicking around. something so people can see him and say goodbye before he goes to langley and then parts unknown from there. he can’t say no to his mother and knows one day it’s going to bite him in the ass. this time, just because it’s different and because it will make her happy before she spends god only know how long worrying about him, he lets her throw the damn party. by the time dad gets involved, he puts his foot down and cuts off the country club plans and into something more reasonable. the caterer has been paid for so there’s nothing he can do about that but he questions if the club would be tasteful. it’s the magic word and quickly and quietly, they’re back to a dinner party at home.

she still uses her wedding china and orders a carrot cake because it’s his favorite. it’s one last thing she can take care of for him and something about that cake makes his chest hurt.

“ben?” annemarie’s voice pulls him out of wherever the hell his mind was. she’s wearing a blue dress and knuckle duster of an engagement ring and even though she’s twenty four, she’ll always look about twelve years old to him. “bishops are here.”

he adjusts the belt on his uniform for something to do with his hands. he’s been hiding in the dining room while people arrive, not quite ready to step into the spotlight, but if the bishops have arrived, there’s no more use hiding. “okay. did they-“

she nods and fidgets with her earrings.“yeah, julia’s here.”

he hasn’t seen julia in awhile and it doesn’t feel awkward to be in the same room with her again, finally. technically, they haven’t been in a relationship for years and that’s fine but they’d fooled around some when he was home from muroc for a few weeks back in august. definitely a mistake but if she’d still seemed a little hostile at thanksgiving, things had been back to normal by christmas - though what the hell was normal about christmas under the looming cloud of war, he didn’t know. 

george bishop shakes his hand, giving it a little too much torque for a man who taught ben to drive, and margaret hugs him tight enough that he feels her nails press through his jacket. julia stands behind them with a hand in her hip, the other looped through josie’s arm as though she needs the support. she says hello and then goes off with annemarie and her sister. annemarie is freshly engaged and the conversation is probably a lot safer there - dresses and cake and when the hell she and donny are going to manage a wedding amidst all of this. she laughs, that husky sound he’s been a little hooked on since they were teenagers and he realized julia bishop would be a hell of a lot more fun to kiss than annoy.

george asks him a question about b-17s and his attention comes back. he answers, letting george lead him to the library to where the rest of the men are. he’s the only career military in their social circle and if he has a dollar for every stupid question he’s answered since pearl harbor, he’d probably be able to buy his way out of this deployment. rick is 4F and donny is probably headed for a cushy desk post, courtesy of his father’s connections, but besides friends and family members, there’s the corps of bag boys and stockers at b&t to consider, should the war go on for longer than expected. 

ben does what he’s supposed to. he laughs and jokes, nursing a scotch he doesn’t especially want tonight. he usually loves a party but his heart isn’t in it. he’s dreading this deployment, ben realizes. he wishes he’d had better timing on this - preferably before he re-enlisted back in july but maybe before the party would have been better. it’s different now. it wasn’t like the philippines were a tea party and he’d flown some hard flights but this…he feels dread sitting hard on his chest and wonders if that’s what his mother is picking up on.

he excuses himself to the patio after dinner and before cake, needing a few minutes to himself. julia is out here already, ankles crossed on top of a little wrought iron table with a drink. she doesn’t tell him to get stuffed so he sits opposite her. despite the history between them, she’s his oldest friend and he’ll miss her for that alone, pure and simple. he’s never felt the need to put on the shine for her and knows she’d chew his ass out for it anyway.

“so. you leave wednesday?” she asks. 

he busies himself with his cigarette case and lighter, offering her one. she leans in for him to light it and he does, without hesitation. “yeah, flying to langley early. no idea where from there.”

“think it’ll be the pacific?”

“i think i made my feelings about swamp ass very clear to command last time,” he says, shrugging like it’s a joke while knowing he’ll go wherever they tell him to. “maybe europe. i don’t know know - they just tell me where to go and where to point the plane.”

“they don’t pay you enough to think, huh?”

“last raise wasn’t enough to do it.”

she laughs. “they’ll get you one of these days.”

“can i write you? just so you know where i end up.”

she shrugs one shoulder. “i don’t know, can you?” 

he laughs. she’s corrected his grammar on that since they were kids and of course he walked right into it. “may i write you?”. 

“of course,” she says, looking at him like he’s an idiot for even asking. she cocks her head and her expression changes, like she knows why he’s out here instead of being center stage. “you’ll be fine, ben. it’s just-“

“flying,” he finishes. it’s what he said to her, to his mother before every test flight the two of them sweat their way through. “you do listen to me.”

“when you say something worth remembering, sure.” she sips her drink, taps her fingernails on the glass in thought. “fly straight, write if you can, come home. pretty simple at the end of the day.”

he laughs. “you’d be a great general, with orders like that.”

“oh, i’d be a fantastic general.” she stands and stretches her arms over her head. “i’d offer to trade places with you but they might notice.”

“they could. can you fly a b-17?”

“any different from driving a buick?”

“just a little bit.”

“then you’ll just have to write me instead.”

5 Is hard for me to answer because I don't really think in terms of what is problematic or maybe I'm just not that interested in ships without problems? Like, I will make my own problems if I don't think there are enough already.

Uh... I'll go for the one on my mind recently: Rick x Morty. It's not that I don't think it's problematic - it really is, it's just that in the context of the canon, adding a shippy dimension to the mess that is their partnership does not appreciably make their relationship more toxic. It's like "Oh, you added poison to the corrosive slime pit. And set it on fire. Cool. "

Also sometimes they are nice to each other.
