Their office gets invitations to events like this on occasion, like a bone to get tossed when the city remembers they exist. They can be hot commodities among her co-workers, and this is the first year where Riley has been senior enough to actually put her name in the ring. Maybe it's because of the case she won last month, but Riley's boss slid two of the coveted tickets across his desk at her and gave her a steady nod.

Not that she has a plus one to bring, so one of her co-workers had come with her, though they had promptly gone separate ways as soon as they walked through the door. She wouldn't worry about her until they went back to work on Monday. Instead, Riley snags a flute of champagne from one of the many passing waiters and begins to make her way further into the sculpture gallery.

She recognizes more than a few of the faces scattered around the museum floor, people with paychecks and reputations that far outstrip her paygrade. Rather than approach anyone outright, RIley chooses to people watch, and admire the art she is surrounded by. She feels the presence of someone step up to her, and Riley takes another sip of champagne before nodding at the statue they're standing in front of. "Remarkable how they were able to get such detail into stone, even without technological advances. Really makes you wonder what humans are capable of when we're given the opportunity."

not to sound like a boomer, but I need some people to learn how to write emails in a semi-professional (at the very least) format so you're not cold emailing a business/potential employer/any other stranger about formal matters in the exact same way you'd DM a close friend on instagram

the formality/language can loosen up in the email chain once you've established a rapport and you match the other person if they're being less formal, but please don't have the very first email you send a stranger be written in all lowercase ultra-casual sms slang with no greeting or signature and a billion emojis

kids these days who are fans of fall out boy and can just read the lyrics on spotify or whatever. do you know how lucky you are. when i was a lad you listened to an illegally burnt cd, heard a nonsensical string of syllables, and listened to it 100 times until you thought you know what was said. and then you got ahold of an album sleeve with lyrics and read the lyrics. and realise you were absolutely nowhere close.

correct me if i’m wrong cos i don’t watch dune.. but i’ve seen people call paul a tragic character. except isn’t he a whole white coloniser tricking indigenous poc into believing he’s a prophet to serve his own interests? that’s inherently evil that cannot be a tragic character imo

so yes that is correct that is what happens. the tragedy is that he is a sixteen year old boy who gets a vision of this happening and he is TERRIFIED and absolutely does not want this to happen at all. He does not want the holy war he does not want to be the chosen one he initially very much wants to fight alongside the fremen as equals trying to liberate themselves from their current colonizer without becoming the messiah because they have common political cause.

And then the entire second half of the first book (and the second movie) are about the concessions he makes to himself bit by bit by bit (well it’s the only way to save his mom and sister. well it’s the only way to prevent nuclear war. well he does want his revenge. well maybe he IS special.) Until by the end he has lost 100% of his humanity, fully wants to be the messiah and is willing to manipulate people into thinking so, and has declared himself duke of arrakis in his father’s name and made a play for the imperial throne.

you’re right that it’s evil. the book and these movies agree with you. the tragedy is watching a child who desperately wanted to avoid this slowly completely lose himself to it anyways. i don’t think “tragic” and “evil” are inherently mutually exclusive.
