pssst do you have trouble with conversations? when you talk to people do you never know what to say? psst come here I have a tip for you..

ask questions! seriously, any questions and all questions. aside from the usual: 'how are you?' 'how has your day been?' 'how did you sleep?' 'how was work/school/etc?' you can also ask random questions, 'whats your favorite [blank]?' 'do you prefer [x] or [y]?' etc!

FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONS.

these are, quite literally, my holy grail when it comes to keeping a conversation going. when someone tells you about their day or how they are, ask questions! (ex. someone tells you they had pasta for dinner. ask them 'did you enjoy it?' 'do you like pasta?' 'did you have anything else with it?' 'what kind of pasta was it?' 'what kind of pasta do you like?') this is a great way to keep a conversation going AND to learn new things about the person youre talking to.

however, and this is just as important (if not more). if you are being asked these questions, give the person smth to work with. if someone asks how your day was, don't just reply with 'good.' give something more:

'it was good, i played with my dog.'

^ just by adding that second sentence, that opens up a whole lot of new questions. ex. 'what kind of dog do you have?' 'do you like dogs?' 'do you have other pets?' 'how many dogs/pets do you have?' 'is your dog hard to take care of?' etcetc.

so, tldr: ask questions, especially follow-up questions. when asked a question, give more than just a one-word answer.

Important Announcement

After some deliberation, I've decided that I'm leaving this blog up as an archive for all my work and leaving the community for the foreseeable future. (If this place gets any kinder to people, any safer for those who remain in it, I'll think about coming back.)

As it stands I am no longer comfortable with being a part of the community, I feel unsafe and have no desire to write for this blog. Thank you to everyone who's stuck around with me over the years! Your support meant the world to me and it was why I stuck around for so long.

I'll check in on this blog periodically to check if I have messages or asks, so if you send something my way chances are I'll see it. I won't be posting writing or doing ask game stuff anymore, but if I find it important I'll answer some asks before the blog goes quiet tonight. I'll take the requests from my askbox I have and work on them on my own time- you can find me on my discord server (posted a ways down from this) where I'll post them, and I'm also on bluesky and ao3 under the same name. the fact that i havent been able to find any eldritch horror stuff(aside from like one fic on ao3) written about the dark urge character yet is criminal. durge is quite literally a pureblooded child of a dead god and i cant stop thinking about it, but i cant really find anyone else exploring that in their writing. i love all the people writing their durges as just murdery little weirdos who have something severely wrong with them, but like...

give me a dark urge that no matter what shape they take, their form has teeth and claws befitting a predator. too-sharp teeth lurking behind a face not made to keep them, designed to shear through flesh and crack bone. give me a durge that's just plain unnerving to be around even beyond the murderousness and religious fanaticism that Bhaal's Chosen holds. Like, in silent rooms, if you listen carefully enough, faint whispers of the urges within their profane blood seep into the air—unintelligible but still undeniably present. A shadow that pools beneath their feet like the blood they leave in their wake. a constant scent of copper that follows them around, no matter how clean they are. Seeing them from the corner of your eye and for a split second you swear you saw tan hide and thick black horns.

so... it's established very blatantly in s3e6 que será será that chase has something deeply personal against fat people.

& as a raised catholic, i would honestly not be surprised if these views were ingrained through him being brought up as a catholic, since so many of the teachings emphasise the evils of gluttony.

for background:

there's the whole experience of lent in general - denying yourself through abstinence, jesus fasting for 40 days & 40 nights by resisting the temptation of satan, paralleling eating food as giving into evil. ironically, chase even says the patient's blood is thicker than pancake batter (alluding to shrove tuesday) in s3e6 que será será. fucking diabolical.

adam & eve being tempted into eating fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and being cast out of heaven for this: the interpretation that food gives you clarity of mind, but is deserving of punishment.

the emphasis on asceticism (especially amongst catholic martyrs, and monastics like nuns and monks) as a sign that you are good, more pure and more holy as a person (it doesn't <3)

gluttony being a deadly sin (🖕)

probably more that i've missed, & that's not even mentioning the influence biblical text has on christian society & attitudes towards food and fat people in general.

whilst the bible also emphasises food as a gift from god (genesis 1:29) and states that food will neither take you closer or further away from god, it's literally just food (1 corinthians 8:8, god bless)... culturally, in catholic society, there is definitely more of an emphasis on the above messages.

combine this with the widespread contemporary 90s/00s social and medical views regarding obesity + chase's incredibly strong view that it's wrong to burden your loved ones with your health & addictions, based on his issues with caring for his alcoholic mother as a kid (@ljblueteak goes into this beautifully in this post)... well, it's kinda unsurprising that he's fatphobic.

s3e6 que será será goes into this too. chase is making constant medical/social pre-judgements about george (the obese patient) throughout the episode, only to hilariously keep being corrected - making a lovely socio-medical commentary throughout the ep.

chase also blames george for his illness, implying he doesn't deserve medical help because chase believes he brought it upon himself through his obesity - comparing george to drug addicts and alcoholics who he believes are the same & don't deserve medical help. which also says sooo much about how he resents caring for his alcoholic mother as a kid. jesus christ, this guy has trauma.

also, the way that chase is fatphobic is very visceral and personal. foreman even acknowledges this in the episode, jokingly asking if chase was bullied by a gang of fat kids. you get the feeling that this kind of hatred has more to it than being raised in a typical 90s fatphobic society (otherwise cameron & foreman would be the exact same). hence the ingrained catholic aversion to gluttony and chase resenting being burdened by his alcoholic mother.
