Marshall Merchandise Update!

Ha ha... Walmart made a liar out of me. I was there not even a week or two ago, and they had no Jungle Pups toys, whatsoever. I stopped in today, and look at what they're finally stocking on their shelves! The selection was quite small, however. They just had the Deluxe Elephant vehicle, the Marshall & Skye set, and the Chase & Tracker set. For the usual-sized vehicles, they only had Rubble's and no one else's.

You know, when the Mighty Movie toys slowly trickled in, I recall my stores only got Rubble at first, too. What's up with that? It's like they expect his merch to fly off shelves, so they always stock it first. I wonder how true that is...?

The "Deluxe Elephant Vehicle" is certainly the star attraction this time around. Unless I'm mistaken, Marshall's the only one to get one of these larger vehicles, so way to go, spotted one! To be honest, outside of Tracker, I'd say he might've had the second-biggest presence in Jungle Pups, which after season 9, I was very glad to see.

...Which makes it all the more a shame that Nickelodeon USA shoved all of the episodes out in less than a week here. I really wish they'd taken their time with this subseries. :(

In any case, this thing's trunk is supposed to launch plastic water balls (three are included), which is pretty neat. You can place the unused ones in that tube on top, and I believe you can press a button somewhere to release a little latch to have the next water ball roll into place to get launched. There's also a container on the back where you can store them. The driver's seat has the usual clip so the Marshall figurine won't fall out, though I sometimes dread using those, as I'm always afraid it might scratch the paint on the figurine. 😅

Overall, I'd say it's pretty cool! Hopefully the kids will like it, too.

Next, the "Marshall, Skye & Elephant" set. As I mentioned before, there's another set just like this, except it has Chase, Tracker and a tiger. Admittedly, I wish they'd included Chase and Marshall together. Skye fans would've been happy with Tracker, right? lol

Similar to the vehicle above, the elephant also launches a projectile, although this one's more of a splat of water. Also, I compared the two figurines of Marshall, and they're virtually identical... save for his pup pack being yellow and there's less silver paint. They didn't always used to do that, but I think, ever since the pandemic, they've been cutting costs by just using the same mold and painting them a little differently. I'm not sure how to feel about that. 😅

That's it for the Jungle Pups toys for now. Marshall also has a smaller, more traditionally-sized vehicle, but my Walmart didn't get any in yet. Naturally, I hope to add that at some point... and any mini-figurines, plush dolls and/or True Metals, if they end up making any. Currently, I've no idea if those are coming or not. No doubt the Jungle Pups line of merchandise won't be as big as what came before it.

But while this is all I have to show of Jungle Pups... I've got one more item recently that I'm especially happy to finally own!

Behold! A Christmas ornament of Marshall's hat! As some of you might remember, or if you recall the Daily Marshall Pic I posted last Christmas (click here to see it again, as I hand-drew the strand and animated the lights myself and I'm still rather proud of it), the TV series actually featured this ornament in one of its episodes! Season 7's "Pups Save a Bah-Humdinger", to be precise (which aired back in 2020). They made some of them into actual ornament soon after, and I've been trying to get a hold of one for a few years now.

...However, they only ever showed up on Amazon, and they only sold Marshall's ornament in a set with Chase and Skye's ornaments (pic below). I kept hoping they'd sell them separately, so I waited and waited for them to show up either in stores or on Ebay. Strangely, no such luck. The only option was Amazon.

However, over time, the price started to drop more and more. They started around $23, and they recently dropped to around $12. I figured why not finally go for it, especially since a relative of mine was able to get me free shipping through her Prime membership. I wasn't sure if I was going to get the one I was looking for, as a review stated that when they bought the set, the only got one. Fortunately, they sent me all three, so that made me happy.

...Except they used bubble wrap to ship them, and Marshall's ornament arrived broken. The part on top, with the yellow ball and mistletoe (?), had snapped off, due to it being rather thin and all. Still, a little super glue fixed it right up, so it's practically good as new. It's disappointing that happened, but hey, I'm glad I finally have it. :)

And that's all for now! Geez, I didn't mean to type so much in this post. I'm a bit long-winded, huh? Ha, I guess I don't know the meaning of the word "brevity". To wrap things up, hopefully my stores will get the other vehicles in soon enough, and anything else of Jungle Pups that's yet to come. I'll let you all know what I find!

Boston University announced Wednesday it would conduct an “inquiry” into Dr. Ibram X. Kendi’s Center for Antiracist Research after complaints emerged about the center’s culture and financial management.

The assessment comes the week after Kendi, a celebrity author, scholar of race, and antiracism advocate laid off more than half the center’s staff.

The complaints, a BU spokesperson said, “focused on the center’s culture and its grant management practices.” The inquiry announced Wednesday represents a broadening of a previous “examination” of the center’s grant management practices, according to the spokesperson, Rachel Lapal Cavallario.

Kendi “takes strong exception to the allegations made in recent complaints and media reports,” she said.

Since its announced launch in June 2020, just days after the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, the center has raised tens of millions of dollars from tech entrepreneurs, Boston-area corporations, and thousands of small donors.

At the time, Kendi, the author of the bestselling 2019 book “How to Be an Antiracist,” said the center would “solve these intractable racial problems of our time.”

The money was meant to finance a range of ambitious projects: a database to track racial disparities nationwide, a graduate degree program, a media enterprise, and research teams studying the effects of systemic racism on health and society.

Some of these projects have come to fruition, including The Emancipator, a digital publication launched with the Boston Globe’s opinion staff in 2021. The publication’s operations shifted to BU in March, although it continues to be hosted on the Globe’s website.

But others have not, including the Racial Data Tracker, which one former staffer described as a “centerpiece” of the organization’s goals.

Lapal Cavallario said Wednesday that the center “has been developing” the Racial Data Tracker. She referred follow-up questions to the center itself, which did not respond.

She also provided a list of the center’s achievements, including: funding for numerous research projects, collaboration in a project launched by journalists at the Atlantic magazine (where Kendi is a contributing writer) to track racial disparities in COVID data, and organizing two “policy convenings” on antibigotry and data collection related to race and ethnicity.

“Boston University and Dr. Kendi believe strongly in the center’s mission,” Lapal Cavallario said. “We look forward to working with him as we conduct our assessment.”

BU’s announcement of the inquiry came hours after the Globe sent the university extensive questions about the center’s operations.

In interviews with the Globe this week, current and former employees described a dysfunctional work environment that made it difficult to achieve the center’s lofty goals.

The organization “was just being mismanaged on a really fundamental level,” said Phillipe Copeland, a professor in BU’s School of Social Work who also worked for the center as assistant director of narrative.

Although most decision-making authority rested with Kendi, Copeland said he found it difficult to schedule meetings with him. Other staffers described paralysis in the organization because Kendi declined to delegate authority and was not often available.

Copeland resigned from the center in June.

Kendi has completed a number of personal projects since 2020, including a graphic novel focused on the history of racist ideas, a podcast called “Be Antiracist,” and a five-episode TV show scheduled to debut Wednesday on ESPN+.

In recent months, Kendi had been on leave from the center, according to BU.

He returned last week and, in a series of Zoom meetings, told approximately 20 of the center’s staffers that they would be laid off, according to Spencer Piston, a BU professor and leader in the center’s policy office.

The layoffs “were initiated by Dr. Kendi” and represented a strategic pivot, not a response to any financial difficulty, Lapal Cavallario said. The center will now pursue a fellowship model “rather than its current research-based approach,” she said.

The layoffs surprised some staffers.

“I don’t know where the money is,” said Saida Grundy, a BU professor who worked at the center from fall 2020 to spring 2021.

In December 2021, Grundy sent an email to BU provost Jean Morrison alleging dysfunction in the organization and a “pattern of amassing grants without any commitment to producing the research obligated” by them.

Lapal Cavallario said Wednesday that BU had “received some complaints from individuals questioning whether the center was following its funding guidelines. We are currently looking into those complaints.”

The center, she said, “would disagree with a characterization of it not having produced important work insofar as antiracism is concerned.”

I really enjoyed watching the growth of Beth Harmon as the show progressed. It was really interesting to see how her relationship with her mother evolved over time. It was also interesting to see how she struggled with drug addiction throughout her life and how much having a support group was able to help her through it. I loved seeing her wardrobe throughout as well!

Cherry Magic! 30 Years of Virginity Makes you a Wizard?

Loved it loved it loved it. So wholesome to watch. Love everything about it. It is the only show I re-watched while airing and it lives rent free in my head. Its so touching, the writing and acting is stellar. The character growth and development is *chefs kiss* 💋, the music used is iconic. I'm sure I'll re-watch it plenty of times more in the future!

This was a fun show! I really enjoyed the plot twists that it came with. It was very addicting to watch.

happy new year everyone! without getting into too much detail, i hope you had much, much better celebrations than mine, and that for all of us, this year is warmer and kinder than 2021 was. i feel a bit bad for breaking my rule of always posting these monthly updates on the first of the month, but i was in such a shit mood yesterday that i don’t think i would have been very conducive to hopeful new years’ thoughts haha. today’s better :).

what i’m reading:

books:

i have a sin to admit: i read seven books in 2021. that’s it. here’s the list.

i used to average around 20 prior to the pandemic, managed 13 in 2020 (but 4 of those were just me re-reading hp from gof to dh) but this year’s just been… hard. i wasn’t going to say anything but then if you’re anything like me, you’re all over booktok and bookstagram with all of these people who are like ‘oh, i only read 48 books this year, i’m so bad,’ with their reading trackers, and notebooks, and all that shite, and… reading is supposed to be a hobby but it sometimes just feels like another chore to tick off the list.

so, if you’re also on that boat of: you’d like to read more and you love to read but you’re just not in that headspace, just know that you’re not alone. i used to do most of my reading while travelling pre-pandemic and i just haven’t found a new routine that works for me. now, i spend so many evenings and weekends tied to my desk writing that the last thing i want to do as a hobby is to pick up more words. it’s also just hard not to compare myself to the things i read. so, anyway, while i would love to say i intend to read more in 2022, we will see. i’m trying to not beat myself up about it - there are already too many things to beat myself up about haha.

this being said, i did make some progress and am about halfway through enfant de salaud, which i already talked about here. it delivers on everything i hoped for and more and definitely confirms sorj chalandon as one of my all time favourite authors. i’m taking a week off to go skiing next week so i’m hoping that in the evenings, i’ll maybe feel like picking up a book to chill. who knows?

i’m still reading: knowing where to look by ala_baguette and still loving it. apart from that i’ve mostly been re-reading this past month, in order to make this rec list i published a few days ago. the response has been fab and i’m so glad all of you are enjoying my top ten for 2021. let’s hope that 2022 brings even more hidden gems. but tbh, even with fics, i haven’t been reading as much as i’d like to this year. and, you know what? let’s cut ourselves some slack lol. whatever.

what i’m watching:

having not had the brainspace to read much lately, i have however watched quite a bit of tv to unwind. i would definitely recommend the following three shows:

aisling bea’s this way up. i adooooored this series. it’s hilarious comedy, gave me a lot of fleabag vibes, but without the awful cringey-ness of fleabag which, tbh, isn’t quite my jam. it hits such a fantastic note between happy and sad, comedy and drama, and laughing at the good and bad things that happen in life. the show is, to put it simply, a comedy about depression, but aisling bea is so funny as well as heartwarming in it (the actors are all absolutely stellar, actually), that it is just so right - i absolutely loved it. although the show is set in london, i do think it has a very irish tone in that way that irish people have of finding the bright side of any situation, i just felt all warm and fuzzy watching it.

talking about warm and fuzzy, a show that was very much not so was flesh and bone. it’s been a couple weeks now since i finished this series, and i still don’t really know what i think of it. i started watching it because i do enjoy a good ballet mystery thriller which… is that what it was? it’s got me thinking a lot about that americanah quote: ‘why did people ask: “what is it about?” as if a novel had to be about only one thing.’ is this show about sexual assault and incest? is it about ballet? is it about the mafia? i don’t fucking know. it’s about a little bit of everything but it definitely got me hooked - i watched the whole eight episodes in a single day. it was a bit disturbing though. man, i don’t know, watch at your own risk, i reckon.

dexter, new blood is out!!!!! full disclosure, i was a massive fan of the original dexter as a teenager but i stopped watching around the time when debra/dexter became a thing. i just never really bought into it and although i know they weren’t real brother and sister is just felt incestuous and wrong. so, i hadn’t seen the end and i was so hesitant to watch this reboot ‘cause i’m getting a bit annoyed at the current tendency to bring back old shows - it feels rather lazy on the part of the writers to not write new things, you know? The Boy kept telling me to watch it and i finally caved when i got home to france and it turned out my mum had also started watching it. and man… i love it. it’s so good! it’s giving me a lot of early dexter vibes where the main concern was: omggg, is he going to get arrested or not??? i swear, if that’s how this season ends, i’m going to be so mad. i absolutely love the relationship with harrison, the ambiguity of: did harrison inherit dex’s dark passenger, or is he just an angry teenager? i love how they’re also not making dexter into an ideal father but rather a shit one, and how his actions have had huge consequences on his son’s life. the break they took in the show was clearly a fantastic idea and this season is of the very highest quality. if you watched the og dexter, please don’t hesitate to watch cause this won’t disappoint. also don’t feel like you had to watch the entire og show to see this. as i said, i never watched past series 6 of the original show and i’m totally fine following new blood.

and, no, i haven’t watched the hp reunion yet. i’ve seen some clips on tiktok, i’m hoping that i’ll find the time to watch it soon!

what i’m hearing:

i’ve been very much enjoying my spotify 2021 wrapped this month. it’s bizarre how much my top music this year is related to fic haha. i can look at all of the items on that list and point to a particular piece i was writing at the time haha. this also very much dates me as a millennial but hey, that is what i am, after all.

what i’m writing:

i hope you all enjoyed the tenth chapter of castles. as i said in the extended a/n, it was a chapter i very much enjoyed writing. i’ll admit that with christmas and new year’s, although i initially intended to write more, i’ve just taken the last couple of weeks off writing to chill and do a lot of life admin type things i procrastinated on for the last couple of months.

in the short term (i.e. january): i would like to finish one of the two one shots i’ve been trying to finish for months, as part of the ROAR series. one is based on seamus, and one on hermione - kind of character study pieces like the two one shots already part of the series. this being said, i’ve been feeling very exhausted and brain dead lately so i’m also just kind of taking it slow, at least for january, not beating myself up if it doesn’t happen. on top of other life stuff (see below), i wrote probably 50,000 words altogether in november and december - when i landed home this christmas i just felt like i could have slept for a whole week. i’m slowly recovering but honestly, i’m staying in france until the end of january and i might not write again until i get back to ireland. a bit like this summer, i think i’m just going to chill for the next couple of weeks and write only if i really feel like it.

in the long term (i.e. for 2022): man, i don’t know. obviously, i’ll keep writing fanfic and i would love to finish castles by the end of 2022. i think it’s possible, but we shall see. there’s still probably six or eight chapters to go, but i would also love to do more original writing this year, which might take time away from fanfic. just know that i do intend to keep working on castles and bring it to an end either by end of 2022 or early 2023. we shall see.

i’ve also signed up to creative writing classes with my local uni (starting early feb - i think i mentioned this before) which i’m hoping will help me reconnect myself with my non-fanfic creativity streak. not that i don’t like writing fanfic, but i do like both and haven’t done much original writing for the past while. i know a lot of you have asked me at some point or other if i would ever consider writing original content, and the answer is yes - it’s just that time hasn’t always been on my side. also, as a general rule, original content gets less traction than fanfic, which is hard in staying motivated, haha.

if i do succeed in producing more original content this year, i’m still sort of struggling to figure out how to share it with you all. on the one hand, i’m not very interested in old school professional publication (at least not at the moment) and would much rather just put my writing online for free for you guys to enjoy if you want to. i also love the idea of having your feedback, comments, chats, etc. on the other hand, i don’t want to post it publicly on tumblr/ao3 because if i ever change my mind about professional publication, that means that i wouldn’t be able to ever use anything i’d previously posted, which is a bit of a bummer. to me, the perfect middle ground would be a subscription, something like patreon, but i have ethical problems about putting content behind a paywall. i’m okay with you guys giving me cash if you want to (see below) but i don’t like the idea that someone who couldn’t afford the subscription couldn’t see my content, you know? it sounds a bit dick-ish. also, i’m not sure what monthly benefits i could offer? anyway, at this point, i’m still thinking about it, and will for sure keep you posted as things happen throughout the year.

lastly, as you might have seen above, i created a tippee. at this stage, the point of it is an attempt at justifying the insane amount of hours i spend on writing. to give you an idea, i would say that a single chapter of castles is probably around 150/200 hours alone. even if it was legal, i would never ever condition access to fanfic to payment, but it just takes a lot of time and a lot of coffees that i buy out of my own pocket, so let’s say that it would literally be you offering me coffee while i work, haha. additionally, it’s sort of related to the patreon idea as well, to see if anyone would even be interested in giving. to be honest, i will write and keep writing (and keep sharing with you) regardless of money cause that’s just a hobby i absolutely love, but if one of you was to give me five bucks as a token of appreciation every once in a while, it would be… very nice, haha.

what i’m doing:

i won’t lie, personally, this has been a very stressful, intense end of year. as explained above, i wrote a lot. i’m also looking for a new job, super busy at my current one, doing interview after interview, one of my best friends is stuck in an abusive relationship i’m trying to get her out of, i got covid, my own relationship stuff and anxiety about turning thirty soon-ish, and i’m tired. i’m hopeful for the new year and excited about the future change i might see happen, but i won’t lie - i’m not sorry to see 2021 go, like i’m sure most of you. on the plus side, castles is insanely close to hitting a very big “hits” milestone, which has be baffled and ecstatic at the same time. so let’s just say: here’s to 2022! i hope it brings you what you’re hoping for :).

✨ Types of Notebooks & Journals 📚📖

I’ll try to link some tumblrs for examples!

art journal - drawing what you did in a day, how you felt, in an artistic way whether it be collage, paint, or pen - another one, interesting one, pretty, so manyyy

writing journal - typical journal, writing about your day, how you felt, mental health things. 

video journal - same thing about how your day went and how you felt. think vlogs, but more personal. good for people who don’t like writing or art. edit them with an app on your phone, or just compile a bunch of random videos together in a digital space.

audio journal - same as above, compile them in a digital space or edit them further

handwriting notebook - practice handwriting! this might be a useful video

“everything notebook” - basically, a notebook where you write everything in from random brainstorms, ideas, and the likes so you can organize them later into lists or other notebooks. 

media notebook - write down all the media you consumed. can be a dedicated notebook for books, TV shows, movies, interesting articles, or all of them combined. Write reviews on them, rank it, dedicate a page to your favorite character, etc.

bullet journal - personal agenda, to do list, trackers, literally your whole life compiled. there’s tons of videos and posts out there about it, and just a quick search will do it

project ideas notebook - YouTube videos? artwork thumbnails? writing prompt brainstorm? can be dedicated to a certain project or a compilation of all the bright Eureka! moments out there. recommend a pocketbook or phone so you can jot down ideas everywhere.

friend journal - this one is really nostalgic for me, but it’s basically passing a single notebook between a friend or group of friends. i used to do this until 5th grade or something with my best friend. it’s deeper than a conversation over text, and the anticipation was worth it. a digital version could be writing on paper, scanning it with a phone app, then sending it to them via email or a messaging app with a schedule.

agenda/to do - basic notebook dedicated to to do lists

observation notebook - be a scientist. write down observations or random thoughts you have throughout the day. could be similar to the ideas notebook or everything notebook. keep it as a little pocketbook

“mood board” notebook - like an art journal, but with more pictures and outside sources. so. much. pretty.

scrapbook - like a mood or art journal. but more about specific events or days in your life with personal pictures

habit tracker - all the trackers in one notebook. think bullet journal trackers but without the other stuff

language journal - write only in your target language! find prompts online, talk about your day, anything you can to practice writing and thinking more fluently in that language - important for grammar

future journal - write to your future self and mark a time when you can look back on it. i think of Good Luck Charlie and how the girl records herself talking to Charlie in the future.

how into torrents

this is very basic "tutorial". lots of you probably know that shit already. some of you don't (and it's okay, we're here to learn). so! step by step:

1. choosing a torrent site

you need to find a torrent tracker website. some of them are legit, some of them are not. google is your friend (not really, but googling "legit torrent sites 2020" might be helpful).

ThePirateBay.org is one of the torrent legends. 100% legit, exists for ~15 years continuously, is absolutely unsinkable. a classic.

rarbg.to is your go-to place if you're searching for movies or shows. also legit.

1337x.to is my personal favourite. it looks shady, but is actually 100% okay.

obv there is much more torrent sites than those three, but I'm probably gonna list them in the separate post with links etc.

!BE CAREFUL! when I say "ThePirateBay.org" DON'T go to "ThePirateBay.com" or something. 1337x has a full set of official alternative domains listed on their "about" page. but if you go to an unofficial one you might put yourself at risk (of computer viruses, of getting your data stolen, of turning your computer into a bitcoin mine etc.). be smart, don't do that.

2. searching for a desired file

all of the torrent sites has searchbars. utilize them ;) search for the title of the show you want to find, or a movie, or a computer program, or a song, or a game.

think about what you need to get what you want. if you want a game or a program, it's obvious you need some kind of .exe file (or .iso). but if you think you've found a movie, and its filename is “movie_title.exe” then it's shady. find something different lol.

also, check the size. it should seem "legit" (one single episode of a SD TV show is ~300 MB, up to ~1 GB if it's HD. a movie can be a few GB if it's long and HD. games and programs might be bigger, but it depends. the heaviest file I've seen was like. 150+ GB. it was a pack of actually legal resources for learning spanish.)

check the comments (if available). usually some users have written "reviews" of the file. sometimes it's just "V: 10, A: 7,5" which is their opinion on video and audio quality (and it also means the file is somewhat legit (if it’s a video file ofc)). sometimes it's "SCAM!", "don't download it, it's virus" or "you liar it's not game of thrones it's just sasha grey's filmography". use your common sense to judge the legitimity of said comments ;)

3. checking the SE/LE ratio (the higher SE & the lower LE = the better)

SE (seeders) are users that have an entire file for download. the higher SE, the faster you'll download your file from them. LE (leechers) are users that are downloading the file currently, but aren't seeding it.

if SE is big then it's a popular torrent and will download FAST (depending on your internet connection of course). if SE = 1 then it may take. a little while longer. back in early 2000s downloading one single SD movie took like. 2 weeks.

4. magnet links vs torrent files

torrent file is an actual file you download and then have to open via torrent client to download your desired file.

magnet link is just a link you click and your torrent client downloads your desired file magically by itself.

magnet links are therefore simplier to use.

5. oh my we forgot about the torrent client!

torrent client is just a program that lets you open .torrent files. you download actual files via said program.

I personally like µTorrent (Win, Linux, macOS), but there are others like BitTorrent (Win, macOS, Android) or Vuze (Win, Linux, macOS). see what suits you best.

6. if you downloaded the torrent file, now you have to open it in your torrent client.

if you clicked the magnet link, it should open by itself in your torrent client.

now you just choose the download location and... wait. look at that % bar, slowly becoming fuller and fuller. that's it, that's your file, coming to you!

7. "I downloaded my file, now what?"

now. seed.

it means "leaving your torrent client turned on in the background and not deleting the .torrent file (if you haven't used the magnet link) nor moving your full, downloaded file from your computer"

it is not required, but it's just. nice of you to share what you've got with others.

8. if you're done with seeding, then you can delete your .torrent file

(if you're using µTorrent, there's an option to delete .torrent file OR delete .torrent file AND data. the first does exactly what it says, the second deletes .torrent file AND your downloaded file, so be careful)

9. and that's it! be gay, do crime!

(P.S.: I intend to write a separate post about different torrent sites, different torrent clients, different ways of describing video files (that's. more complicated than it seems.), VPNs and all that stuff. be patient and/or message me what you're interested in the most!)

NaNoWriMo 2020 tag meme

Okay so I saw this video on youtube and decided to answer these questions here. 

1. What are you working on for NaNoWriMo this year?

It’s NaNoAMO again! I’m working on continuing my WIP longfic amo (amas, amamus. I’d like to say “finish” but imho it’s more important that I’m working consistently and making progress at all, so we’ll just say “continue” for now. 

2. What apps do you use to help you write and stay motivated?

Apps and sites that are helpful for me with writing, either directly or indirectly: 

Google docs and Scrivener apps — processing the words, yup yup. 

Calm app — a meditation app. This helps me settle my racing brain. 

Atmosphere — a simple ambient sound app that I really like. It has a nice basic interface and you can make mixes of five or six sounds; it’s simple enough that I can throw them together on the fly, and you can also save them. 

Ambient Mixer — an app (and site) that is less simple, but can be fun to explore and find or find-and-tweak or create some good mixes. I do NOT do this one on the fly — it’s too easy to get sucked in. 

Music playlist — great for signaling my brain that it’s time to work on the thing. Sometimes I have to turn it off after a while because I need more quiet, but that’s okay. 

Basic timer app — I don’t have a particular one I prefer, usually just my phone one. Sometimes I might mix it up by using an hourglass. I find that if I set it for more than 20 minutes I often lose focus, so I usually stick with that. I also try to make myself take five minute breaks every 2 or 3 sprints, which is hard to do, but usually helpful. 

4thewords.com — this is a gamified writing site, and I do have a lot of fun with the smaller wordcount monsters. It isn’t free, but I enjoy it a lot and use it every day. 

I will also mention Fighter’s Block — https://cerey.github.io/fighters-block/ — which is a very very simple version of racing/fighting a monster via wordcount, but this one is free. (I’m not sure if this plays well with mobile right now, and you might have to poke around to get it to work. Be sure to copy and paste your words into your preferred program after you write them!!) 

3. Where do you like to write and what’s your favorite writing spot?

Sometimes I like to write lying down in bed with my tablet, but honestly it’s not usually very productive. Even if it weren’t coronatime, I don’t live near any coffee shops or anything. There’s the library (well, normally), but then I get distracted by the books. Occasionally I will mix it up by curling up on the couch with a notebook and pen, but honestly, for me, my desk is best. I have a good chair, which is way better for my back and neck. I also have a little space heater, which is motivating on cold days. 

4. What are your writing space must-haves? (i.e. candles, pillows, fave notebook, etc)

Right now on my desk (besides some cluttery nonsense), I have:

5. What are your favorite drinks and snacks to have when writing?

I like to have water and/or Snowbaz tea available. I’m not much for snacks during, but this time I DO have some thematically appropriate Andes chocolate mints. (Simon and Baz actually like mint Aeros, but those are large and hard to find around here, and I like Andes better, so.) I usually have one right at the beginning of a writing session, and maybe one at the end, if it’s been a couple hours. 

6. What are your favorite writing distractions? (i.e. pets, tv shows, etc)

I like to take breaks to play harp or kalimba. Naps? 

7. What are your favorite ways to get back on track?

Making tea, taking some breaths or doing a meditation in my favorite app, possibly doing some stretching with a tai chi app that I have. Starting my playlist or focusing on a candle is helpful, too. And sometimes I really do just have to take a break for a bit, and then come back later. 

8. What are your writing rewards and milestones?

I’m doing a modified version of NaNo, since I’m working on an ongoing project instead of starting something new. I’m counting ALL the words I write (notes and freewriting as well as actual prose) and putting them into the NaNo site, but more importantly I made myself a tracker in my bullet journal with my own definitions of “success” to check off on a daily basis. (Prominently featuring: did you show up for at least 20 minutes? and Did you make a note for what to start with next time? If so then YOU HAVE WON!!)

Semiannual Review and July Bullet Journal Setup

DISCLAIMER

Success means different things to different people. I tend to be very much achievement-oriented, and in this post I will list a number of those achievements. But I also want to point out HOW I've been able to make them possible.

I apologize in advance if any of this comes across as bragging. That's not my intention. My biggest competition is myself, and I am striving to become the best version of myself I can be.

In this post I will share some systems I have set up to help me. They are not necessarily meant to be prescriptive; you have to figure out what works for you.

I'm documenting this here because a few of you have found me sharing this sort of thing to be helpful and inspiring, and I definitely enjoy being helpful and inspiring! 🙂

Let's begin.

I DON'T DO NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS

I don't do New Year's Resolutions. Instead, I have a three-word theme to my year. The words for 2021 are MOLD, DEEPER, and STRENGTHEN.

Bullet Journaling, a concept invented by Ryder Carroll, has empowered me. One practice I've especially built in is regular reviews with myself. Having completed the first half of 2021, I recently did a Semiannual Review by going back through all the journals I've used.

In typical review fashion, I set up sections for What Worked and What Didn't. I also set up a section for What to Improve, as well as a section for Improvements.

See where the pen in this photo is? I originally had the heading for What Didn't there. But, as I continued reviewing, I needed to add more in What Worked. SO MUCH more that I had to use some Wite-Out correction tape (my friend) and move the What Didn't section down further!

So how has this helped me grow into my three-word theme so far?

MOLD

I'm praying to be molded more by God, to break molds (patterns) that no longer work for me, and to fill new molds like liquid wherever I'm needed.

Bullet journaling helps me with daily habit tracking as I'm spending time with Scripture and in prayer. Daily reflection is also a habit, and I've been doing weekly and monthly reviews to identify and break old patterns and set goals to build new ones.

DEEPER

I recognized that 2020 had constrained my relationships and set out in 2021 to go deeper, both in my relationship with God and my other relationships.

Bullet journaling helps me with this through daily habit tracking through the three Bible study plans I'm following this year. I also am keeping track of praying at least seven times (alarms on my phone a different times throughout the day also help me).

I've got weekly goals to touch base with family members. I've been working to send 52 thank you cards this year (average of one per week). I've got important dates like birthdays and wedding anniversaries I'm tracking so I can send greeting cards.

As an extroverted person, the isolation of the last year messed with my mental health. I’ve been determined that, regardless of constraints, I will work to maintain deeper relationships this year. I recognize that others may not reach out to me -- I cannot expect that. If I want deeper relationships, I will go after that. So I’m using my journal to track that I’m touching base with my family members via phone/text/in-person each week. Also, every month, I’m writing a letter to my brother who lives in Texas.

STRENGTHEN

This word was the last one that came to me at the end of 2020. Throughout the year, my heart function greatly improved. Whereas in December 2019 my heart function was only 20% of what it should normally be, by October it had returned to normal.

But, my cardiologist cautioned in January, that doesn’t mean that the congestive heart failure symptoms are completely gone, or that I shouldn’t remain vigilant.

This became especially apparent in March when I had to call the cardiac nurse on-call to talk about some shortness of breath I’d begun feeling. 

After going over my medicines, she said: “I have to ask. Have you been watching your sodium and fluid intake?” 

Of course I said, “Not really.”

“OK. This is is me, kicking your butt, to get you back to it!” she said.

So, when I think of STRENGTHEN, primarily it’s physically, especially related to my heart. But there also is the physical aspect of regular cardio exercise.

I’ve been using my journal to track my exercise (or showing me the lack of it), to feed my spirit, and to feed my mind.

A big part of all this has meant that I’m not watching as much TV. I’m tracking how many pages of books I’m reading, and I was so fired up to see that I read 8 books in June alone!

Another thing I realized during my semiannual review is just how hard it is for me to sit and do nothing at all. In fact, the only way I’m able to do it is to make it a task or goal so I can earn that task completion. It sounds funny, but, by keeping it among the other things I have going on, I’m reminding myself to make time to just do nothing for 30 minutes. I hope to see this practice as much a worthwhile endeavor as completing any other task.

Feeding and strengthening my spirit also involves priming for each day. I will work to motivate myself - often with music, In fact, I created a Spotify playlist (tap or click to listen): MOLD-DEEPER-STRENGTHEN 2021 to help with that. :)

WHAT DIDN’T WORK

I realized that, while many, many things DID work so far this year, here are some things that didn’t:

Excuses for not exercising

Emotional eating and living

Spreading myself too thin with too many goals to achieve at once

Being out of touch with goals in general (on my master list)

Periodic lack of focus throughout the day

Time-wasting activities (online games, etc.)

Reluctance to cook meals for my family

IMPROVEMENTS

Going forward, I want to track more finitely what is contributing to my energy level and overall health. So for July, I’ve set up a couple new trackers to track my energy level and sleep, as well as a food/drink/medicine log. I hope that, with the information here, that I’ll be able to “hack” my lifestyle better to strengthen myself.

I’ve also set a weekly goal to make meals and to meditate/schedule time to do nothing.

I’m including among my daily habit tracker an item to review the goals I have written down.

I’ve found so much help from having a daily gratitude journal. I like to identify three things I’m grateful for each day. Also, being achievement-oriented, I’ve got a Big Wins journal where I capture the “big win” for the day.

CELEBRATE EVERY VICTORY

I shared with someone many months ago about how easy it is for me to encourage others. They gave me the advice that I should do that with myself. So, as lofty as these goals have been, and while it’s so easy to see what I still need to do, it’s just as important for me to celebrate every victory, no matter how big or small.

Because, when all is said and done, I’m still getting better, and that’s what matters.

Thank you, my friend. As I said at the beginning, it’s not meant to be prescriptive for anyone; it’s just how I’m trying to figure this out for me. By all means adapt what you see for yourself it you want.

How does one bullet journal? It sounds very...like a thing people who have their shit together do. Maybe I can fool people into thinking I’m not a human manifestation of chaos, and be somewhat productive in the process.

Honestly, I have no idea I just watched a bunch of videos went: Fuck that I’m a student doing their A-Levels and made up my own little thing.

I (at the start of the year) drew out a bookshelf for all the books I read. I also did a year in Polaroids and a playlist of the year which... I’m not sure why because I feel like I’m going to end up exposing how cringe some of my song choices are. Erm. I also did a Films Watched and TV Shows Completed which are... currently sparse

I do a mood tracker for each month (the start of February was chaotic) and a Highlight of The Day. You’d be surprised how many of them have been *name* updated/published a fic.

And then I just make to-do lists so I can feel accomplished and also like I’ve done something. It also makes sure that I don’t forget to do simple things- once I literally wrote update Goodreads cos I kept forgetting.

So basically, to answer your question... I have no idea. Some people create these really elaborate weekly spreads, but I don’t have the energy for that so I will literally make a list and cross things off.

I did teach myself handlettering like two years ago? Though, so I usually put some of that in too. I’d recommend, if you wanted to start, to watch people’s simple set-up videos otherwise you’re just going to get overwhelmed and give up- which is what happened to me  in 2018, 2019 and 2020 :)

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Completed - I really enjoyed the episode with Pimento, that episode was just hilarious. I think that was one of my favourite episodes this season.

Self Made

It was very a enjoyable mini-series. Sarah's story is so fascinating and inspirational precisely because of how many hardships she had to deal with throughout her life. I enjoyed the show and learning more about Madam CJ Walker.

Interior Design Masters

This was a really fun show. I didn’t agree with everything that the judges said, but I definitely had fun watching the contestants renovate commercial and residential places. My favourite episode was when they worked on the stores (not restaurants). I really loved those transformations.

The Big Flower Fight

It was such a fun show! I really enjoyed watching how the contestants used plants to create beautiful and interesting topiaries/sculptures. I loved most of the contestants and was always looking forward to their take on each challenge!

Space Force

It was a fun show! Enjoyed watching it with my sister.  :)

Hannibal

Re-visiting this show from the one or two episodes I watched back when I was in grade 12 and one of my teachers was promoting this show because her friend was an extra in it. But, I really am intrigued by the concept, the way the show is filmed is just so gorgeous for such a gory show and the plot is very fascinating. Anytime Hannibal feeds anyone I get a bit antsy. But Will Graham is just such an interesting character. I have high expectations of the show!

Update: Finished s1 and LOVED it! As I was binging s2 I started to get nightmares and also the plot started to move forward at a snail’s pace (imo) so I will put this show on hold for now.

The Umbrella Academy s2

So I really enjoyed this season of Umbrella Academy because I got to see more of Five kicking ass as a teenager, the character growth of BOTH Diego and Luther, seeing the entire family getting closer to Vanya and the general action sequences of the show. I enjoyed the new characters as well - Lila and The Swedes. I admit my memory of season 1 of this show is somewhat vague, but I found that the ending of the season (its climax to be precise in episode 10) to be somewhat lackluster considering the build-up. 

I really enjoyed was seeing Klaus, Allison and Vanya deal with their respective subplots and that scene in the barbershop with the three of them bonding really was a highlight of the season. Also when (spoiler alert) Ben finally ‘died’ and went to the afterlife that scene was so well executed and emotional and has got to be one of my favorite moments of the season. It was nice to see him helping Vanya out.

The Haunting of Bly Manor

I loved this show! I grew to love these characters so much! I loved Hannah and Owen’s relationship so much.

The Haunting of Hill House

So, I read the book first and wanted to see what the hype was all about. I really enjoyed the little easter eggs to the book in the show, and that ONE SCENE with the ‘Bent-Neck lady’ gave me a nightmare... It was good, definitely an interesting take on the story.

Anime

The Disastrous Life of Saiki: Reawakened

I love how the show constantly shows us that Saiki will tolerate anyone for the sweet sweet coffee jelly. I need more of this show!! Please give me more episodes @Netflix.

Haikyuu!

I love it. I understand the hype now. I really enjoy how they show the lives of all the people in the show, the ‘extras’ on the team, the opponents and give us a glimpse into their lives and their stories. I finished season two and am looking forward to more! It’s honestly so hard to be rooting for just one person in this show and I love that.  Finished 2 seasons so far. Will get back into it eventually. I’m honestly jealous that I can’t play volleyball rn.

Mob Psycho 100

This will probably take me a while to finish as I am planning to read it before watching it. It’s so so lovable. I love Mob and I would do anything to protect him. Also I really like Regen’s protectiveness and genuineness towards Shigeo. It’s just a great manga/anime. Finished season one. It is so addicting! I love Mob and Reigen so much! <3

Update: finished season two. Man watching this show makes my heart grow 5 x as big every time I watch it! It’s just so endearing, fun, comedic. I love how season two really just show’s Shigeo’s growth throughout the season. His speech to Shirazawa at the last episode and how it came full circle - loved it! I also was surprised by the red headed son (Ryu?) in the best way. I hope we see more of him in the next season. Can’t wait for more!

Fruits Basket season 2

Can’t wait for more crying. 🙃 I am really looking forward to seeing Yuki’s character development and his relationship with Machi and Kakeru developing. Also looking forward to seeing Momiji growing and more moments between Kyo and Tohru.

Update: Love seeing Yuki’s arc in the anime format. Seeing him reach out to his brother, Hatsuharu and the student council peeps and grow is so rewarding to watch. Looking forward to more and more Kyorhu. One wish is that, I wish with this season we could see Momiiji change physically a bit more but I’m holding onto hope for that near the end of the season. 

March Comes in like a Lion/ 3-gatsu no Lion

It’s not my usual type of anime to watch as it is so slice-of-life, but in a weird way it really reminds me of My Roommate is a Cat except after I watch it I want to play chess or learn shogi. Of course, Rei has depression and a lot of issues he needs to work with, but the sisters are just so sweet and the moments that they show up to take care of him are so heartwarming. I love his self-proclaimed ‘best’ friend and rival - Nikaidou. I just really love how he’s drawn, his personality and when he shows up in the show it definitely perks me up. I really enjoy seeing him develop as a character and as a person. I am somewhat sympathetic to the plight of his foster sister but where I am in the show (finished s1) I absolutely loathe her. I really like seeing  how many people are around Rei and watching him tackle life and grow. Looking forward to watching s2!

The animation is very interesting. One thing that I am not sure if it is deliberate or not is how the characters’ facial expressions (mostly the way the mouth is in close-ups) are drawn to me seems very ambiguous to me - I can’t quite understand what emotion is being conveyed.

Update: Started s2 and man the bullying storyline with Hina is so sad.

Teasing Master Takagi-san

DNF. Just started it randomly. It’s very cute.

The Great Pretender

I started it cuz it was short and seemed like fun. It has darker undertones than I expected going into it. On the Singapore storyline.

Wotaku

This was very short and binge-able. I liked it, it’s fun for what it is.

Dramas

Never Twice

So idk if I’ll actually keep up with this as it is a guilty pleasure atm. I just started it because I liked some of the tropes that the show had (found family, sweet male lead, baby being doted on etc.). I am enjoying the gifs of the show. The plot is very... boring and I do recognize that for the most part the female characters don’t have much intrinsic motivation or identity outside male characters... 

05.2020 Update: DNF. 

Crash Landing on You

I am really enjoying it so far. I really like that both the female leads are just very powerful and interesting on their own. Really like how the found family trope is being used. The romance is cute (a bit much at times imo). I still can’t get over how Captain Ri heard her suicide tape and just went ‘oh we are fated to be together’. That was... an interesting interpretation of the tape...

Also the whole thing with her being in N. Korea is hilarious and really the drama asks the viewer to really suspend disbelief to enjoy the show but  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Update: Completed. Enjoyed it overall. Wasn’t the best drama I’ve ever seen but REALLY loved the female leads in the show. Seo Dan and her family are just SO adorable. Can’t believe Gu Suengjoon was killed just as his relationship with Dan became so cute. One qualm is that this show does the whole near death thing WAY too many times with the main couple for my taste. 

365: Repeat the Year

Interesting premise and it has Nam Jihyun who I love. Looking forward to more and hoping it will keep my attention. I can’t believe that by episode 10 that the serial killer was revealed. I mean, I’m still invested in the show but that definitely caught me off-guard.

Finished it! I am really glad that they reduced the total amount of episodes because I felt that the ending was well done - not too rushed, not too out there (for the show). It was a very good ending for the show! I recommend it to anyone interested in a sci-fi/thriller. Overall, it was a fun time! Very engaging and would appeal to anyone interested in thrillers. I do have ONE gripe about the show which is a spoiler but it did not prevent me from enjoying the show. 

Love with Flaws/ People with Flaws

Finished! I started it cuz of a random compilation I saw on Youtube with the show and the gifs of it here and there and it’s decent overall. I would say that out of the many kdramas I’ve seen in this genre, it does stand slightly apart from the rest because of how each character is portrayed. I feel like there were no overt archetypes for the characters and I especially liked how they portrayed characters relationships. I liked how the siblings’ relationships were portrayed, and I really ended up loving the female lead’s eldest brother. He’s just so sweet and kind and I love how he does his best to take care of their entire family. It was definitely sad to see at points knowing that Cha In Ha committed suicide, but his character in the show was just so well done and important! Also his boyfriend is literally so pure I love him. As usual Seulgi just makes me go  😍😍.   

Nobody Knows 2020

It’s really good - very dark and bizarre. The shady foundation’s motivations are a mystery to me, but that hotel owner is a very interesting character. I will get back to it when I can handle more pain.

Update few months later: The twists and the turns though. Wow. I love all the children and how (so far) they are all portrayed as victims of circumstance. They are so sweet and I appreciate how Eun Ho, Dong Ryong and Min Sung’s relationships progress throughout the show. I’m also enjoying the character development of Sun Woo (the teacher/heir to the foundation). It’s also nice to see Cha Young-Jin begin to slowly open up. I’m enjoying the show a lot so far and am very intrigued by Baek Sang Ho’s group.

Final update: FINISHED it! Really loved this drama a lot. I love how all the characters are written so lovingly with so much depth to them. I liked the way the plot unraveled, I liked how all the relationships developed in the story, I loved the way forgiveness and morality were discussed. It was a really good drama and I am missing it already!

Chicago Typewriter

A re-watch. Man I love this drama. The three leads and their relationship is just adorable. 

I hope that in Shin Yul’s world/afterlife or whatever they can be happy together. <3 

Oh My Baby

I started this out because I was extremely bored and saw a few gifs of the show. It seems promising. Don’t have super high expectations of the show tbh. I do like the main couple though! They are adorable, nervously awaiting how it will conclude.

Update: Skipped a couple of episodes (4?) and went to the end. It ended up alright, very open ending and somewhat realistic. I’m glad the main characters were able to put their relationship above their disappointment in being infertile.

Strangers from Hell/ Hell is Other People

I really enjoyed it!! - If I were to recommend it to anyone I would recommend they go into it as blind as possible to enjoy it to the fullest.

So... I had no clue that this show was ONLY 10 episodes long, so imagine my surprise as the events that have been put to play begin to climax, I checked and was surprised that it wasn’t a 16 episode drama. Anyways, this drama had superb writing, directing, acting and fight scene choreography. Everything came together to really make this show have such a dark, creepy atmosphere that intensified as the episodes went on. I loved how the show portrayed how Yoon Joon Yoo/O’s mentality was tested to the breaking point. Tbh I thought he was slow in the beginning of the show (episode 1-2), but turned out that he did far better than his counterparts. I think that one thing that was a shame was they didn’t really show the strength of his relationship w his girlfriend too much before, and had they had more screen time as a couple I would have been even more invested in the story. 

Mystic Pop-up Bar

Loved it! This was a really enjoyable show. The pacing was good, the story was interesting and I liked watching the characters relationships develop. It was heartwarming and a fun watch! I enjoyed the focus on various people’s stories showcasing all sorts of relationships. 

It’s Okay Not to be Okay/ Psycho But It’s Okay

Put it on hold for now - watched up until episode 10-12ish.

Flower of Evil

The best kdrama of 2020 so far? Possibly.  Love how it mixes being a thriller with the marital relationship aspect. One potential con is that it seems that the mystery aspect of the show for now seems fairly obvious but how the situations will be handled keeps me on the edge of my seat!! Also I totally did not expect such a strong marriage to be shown in a thriller drama! Also the way that Cha Ji Won is written is just chef’s kiss. I love how complex she is, how intelligent, kind, caring and so so good at putting things together. I love Hyun So’s family and I hope it ends with them staying together.

Update: Finished it! Not sure how I feel about the very last episode... but I can say I’m glad that Do Hae Su got some crumbs in terms of character development by the end. So glad she didn’t end up with Moo Jin and started a new life abroad. The amnesia plot was unnecessary imo, I would have rather seen more cute scenes of them together than angst in the last episode. But, it was interesting to see how the trial was revealed, and the Baek’s got way better than they deserved which is unfortunately realistic.

Lie after Lie

Plot sounded way more interesting in the synopsis vs the execution. Mediocre plot which I thought was easy to see through.

Eighteen Again

sort of dnf? I made it to epi 14 or so and just finished it in my head and through gifs. It had so much potential which I think it squandered... but there were some genuinely heart warming scenes from the show which I really enjoyed. (Siwoo and his dad bonding, all the scenes showing the mc as the nicest dude).

I don’t want to be friends with you

I really enjoyed the show. I liked how it portrayed the mother-daughter relationship, the differences in how they were raised and how Li Jing Bu was able to get the love she so craved through her dream?/journey. I liked how the romance was handled, how she gained such meaningful relationships during the show and how important it was to her that her mom was happy.

The Good Detective (2020)

I really enjoyed this show! It was really cool to see a show that critiques the corrupt systems they have in place and the unexpected consequences that it can have on people. I liked how it touched on themes of guilt, remorse, forgiveness and resilience. Also, it was interesting to see a guy who has all the money in the world choose to be a workaholic detective.

#132: Is Literature As We Know It Doomed?

The Authors Guild’s 2020 report has come out recently, showing another decline in author earnings. According to the survey of their members, the average full-time published author earned less than $12,488 last year. Book advances these days barely cover the cost of the dinner you have to celebrate getting the book deal. And thanks to Amazon, the idea of a physical bookstore may soon be a thing of the past. Is it time to throw out fountain pens and get a job at the warehouse before even those get automated away?

Well, one thing is clear. The world is changing, and what it means to be a publishes author is changing too. The Internet has democratised access to many of the tools that used to be firmly in the hands of the publishing industry. The gatekeepers are still here, but there just isn’t a whole lot left behind the gates.

It is imperative that what used to work in the 70s – signing up with an agent, getting a book deal and letting a PR firm deal with the rest – is no longer enough. That can be upsetting, particularly for those who had a book deal or stood a very reasonable chance of getting one. But let’s not kid ourselves. Most of us would never get a traditional book deal – either because of our background or because we don’t write books that fit the traditional publishing blueprint.

Back in the day, that would be the end of it. The gate was shut and would remain shut. These days, however, there are thousands of misfits like you and me earning a good living as indie authors. You don’t need to manage a global supply chain to print and distribute books – there’s a website for that. You don’t need an expensive PR firm to make you famous. There’s social media. You can do practically anything that the publishers can from your living room.

In fact, it’s impossible to build a relatable personal brand on social media if you put a PR firm in charge of it. Only you can do that. Many traditionally published authors aren’t willing to do the work, and that, in my opinion, accounts for at least a part of their dwindling sales.

The other part is that the entertainment industry is a lot more complex and competitive than ever before. Gaming is huge. Social media as addictive as ever. The rise of on-demand TV and streaming services has been gnawing at the pie of fiction sales in recent years. However, that doesn’t mean that people will stop reading. Books aren’t just lo-fi versions of films. Readers know that books can convey far more and go well beyond what can be done on the screen. There’s a reason why the book is always better than the film. Literature is, most certainly, here to stay.

Finally, there’s a lot of talk about the role of AI in the future of publishing. From synthesised voices for audiobooks and podcasts to automated translations and virtual ghostwriters that can adopt an author’s style based on set parameters. We don’t know what the future holds. What we do know is that the publishing industry as we know it today also has an expiration date. The disruptor too will be disrupted. And we will have to adapt again.
