I’m sorry. You asked for jealousy, and I was in an angsty mood. There is no happy ending here; be warned.

If Only, If Only (A Single Thing Was Different)

c!Grian x c!Scar x c!Mumbo, c!Grian x gn!Reader (one-sided)

Summary: You’ve fallen in love with your best (only) friend, but he doesn’t know, and definitely doesn’t reciprocate.

Notes: Angsty, unrequited love, jealousy, isolating and depressed actions, parallels to suicidal thoughts and actions (though not explicit). Please be careful when reading. If it’s too much, stop reading! Please! Also, yes I know Minecraft doesn’t have a “___ is typing” message, but it’s for the angst!

You never thought you’d find love. Far too concerned with your builds, it wasn’t often that you got out to meet others. Most of your knowledge of the other hermits came from the serverwide announcements and the buzzing of your communicator; you rarely saw them in-person. The only person who you consistently saw was Grian, as the bird hybrid would come to hang out while you built.

The two of you were closer than close, and perhaps if something were different, you might have been more than friends.

But the Life Games began, and Grian teamed up with Scar for the first round. That was no issue, the two of them were friends. You thought that they were maybe a bit closer than you thought, with how well they knew each other.

Last Life came and went, and the Southlands rose and fell. In one case, quite literally. Grian and Mumbo stuck together this season. It was strange how they gravitated to one another.

And then came Double Life. The straw that broke the camel’s back. Grian was not your soulmate, despite how much you may have wished. Instead, he was with Scar. 

When you returned to HermitCraft, Grian and Scar were constantly at each others’ sides. Mumbo joined their little group, and it wasn’t long until they announced that the three of them were dating.

You pulled away from the celebrations and congratulations thrown at the trio. Turning all your attention back to your building, you jumped into the work. Barely sleeping and barely eating, you didn’t even notice that no one came to visit. There were no familiar wingbeats from overhead, no joyous laughter from your friend. It was just you and the blocks.

Eventually, you stepped back. The build was finished. You turned, searching for the familiar companionship of Grian. He wasn’t there. It was just you.

With your build complete, what was there to work for? Without Grian there to pull you into something, who were you even building for?

It took a moment to turn on your communicator. You never really used it, without anyone to talk to. Scrolling up through your messages with Grian, you let out a small smile at every little reminder to eat, to drink, to sleep, the notifications that he was coming over. 

The last message was three weeks ago. Nothing since the return to the server, and Grian, Scar, and Mumbo’s announcement.

Below, the cursor blinked. You began to type out a message.

<You whisper to Grian: I’m sorry. If only I could have told you. If only anything were different.>

<Grian is typing…>

TRUST ISSUES - Grian x Reader

Warnings: Angsty (kind of), blood, wounds and injuries, wild animals (wolves), and of course death.

Note: This is based on The Life Series and can be read as part of any season. Grian has wings and Reader is allies with Cleo.

A small gasp escapes your mouth, the sting of the cold air coming in contact with your wounded thighs was slowly getting to you. Not only that, dusk was slowly creeping in and night in the mountains wasn’t a fun time.

“I’m serious! please just cooperate will ya’. I’m carrying you back home whether you like it or not.” Grian kept on insisting

“I told you I don’t want to!” You weren’t quite sure how to tell him, that your crippling anxiety and trust issues simply don’t trust him enough to not drop you a hundred miles up in the sky.

“Don’t tell me you’re scared of heights” He questioned in disbelief

“Am not” You defended

“Then why wont you just let me fly you home?”

“Its just-” You wanted to trust him. But after all that’s happened, you don’t think its possible anymore. And to put yourself in such a vulnerable place is asking for a death wish.

“Do you not trust me?”

Silence befell upon the two of you. Your heartbeat was racing, trying to supply your body with the blood it need that was constantly being loss due to the huge scratch that was causing you excruciating pain.

The whisper of the wind filled the surrounding area, along with the hum of leaves and snow. You looked at Grian in the eyes, and you knew he understood what your silence meant.

"Well then, I’ll be off to hunt." You said, putting on your boots

"Be back before night; they might be around. And try to only go after passive creatures, you know how wild animals can be" Cleo advised

"Alright, alright." You wave, making your way out the front door.

You were halfway up the mountain when you realized you'd forgotten to bring a shield.

"Oh well, already up here, might as well continue," you sighed.

Little did you know that letting that slip would cause a catastrophe.

You extended your arm to fire another arrow. You preferred to hunt from a distance, seeing as you haven’t got a shield to protect yourself. You reach to your waist, where the pouch containing all your arrows was, but to your surprise, there was none left. What an unlucky day you whine to yourself after coming to the conclusion you didn’t refill it the last time you foraged.

After getting over your mistake, you approach your now-dead target to get the resources you needed. You reach down to grab the miss-shot arrow by its side in case you might need it again, and as you do, lurking behind you was a pack of hungry wolves looking for their dinner.

In the snowy alp you were in, the song of the snow and occasional rustling of leaves is all there was to hear, so the low growl and sound of steps were definitely noticeable, but you weren’t able to react quick enough.

As you turn around to the woods, a wolf pounced on you. The wild animal’s claw dug into your thighs; it retracted its paw, making the scratch bigger than it already is almost reaching up to your knees.

You skillfully draw your sword, swinging it across the wolf’s chest giving you time to get back on your feet and retreat. But the rest of the wolves wouldn’t let you get away so easily.

As fast as you could, you ran to the woods to hide. You knew it’d be damn near impossible to make the wolves lose track of you because of their unmatched sense of smell, plus the trail of blood your leaving but you had to try. You can’t die a coward.

The rest of the pack swiftly chase after you, their large paws leaving prints on the ground, their claws and fangs ready to attack.

A smaller but faster wolf got to you, but after slashing it with your sword it backed-out. Soon after, the rest of the unfriendly gang retreated after discerning that you weren’t such an easy target.

You didn’t want to take any chances so you continued to run, the adrenaline in your blood was pumping making the wound barely noticeable but soon enough it started aching. the unbearable snowy terrain made it more and more difficult to run, and the possibility of running into another wild animal made you anxious. There was no decision or choice to be made, however. The only correct answer was to run.

After figuring you had gotten pretty far from the scene of injury, you stopped to catch your breath. Near a cliffside you took a seat, weapon still in- hand, just in case.

You heaved out a big sigh and closed your eyes for a while. Moments after, you regained a bit of energy and stood up, though your legs weren’t quite ready to walk. You turned your head to look back at the forest, where you saw a figure in the distance.

‘huh… didn’t know hallucinations were a side effect of wounds.' You whisper to yourself.

"Hey [reader]! "Is that you?" A familiar voiced called out. the figure now running towards you. Once again the adrenaline started kicking in. Surely, they aren’t here to kill you.

In the cruel game you were in, it was every player for themselves. Past friendships were barely taken into consideration and if they were, most of the time it would end in betrayal. With only a few hours left before you turn red, you too were starting to get desperate.

“What happened here? are you alright?” He said, wings drooped down. He tried to approach you further, taking small steps to where you were stood.

“No! don’t get any closer.” You step back, using your bad leg accidentally, causing you to whimper.

“It’s alright, I wont hurt you. I’m only here to help.” he claimed

You sneered to yourself. After all the deaths he directly and indirectly caused, it was quite reasonable for you to be wary of him. But your brief alliance and agreement during the start of this world made you ponder if he means the truth.

“Ah that looks bad; you’re losing too much blood.”

“Yeah, obviously.”

“Come on, I’ll fly you back.”

You were stunned by his words, and shocked at how much he thinks you trust him. For him to fly you home, to bring you up in the sky, hundreds above the ground, is basically giving him the opportunity to drop you and gain more for himself.

“I’d rather bleed to death, thank you.” you said in a monotone voice.

“I’m serious.”

You cant help but take a step back despite having a cliff behind you. “You have it wrong Grian, I am not afraid of heights, nor am I afraid of anything.”

“I am too.”

”Well, I think I’d rather have you be upset about heights than have you dead. So stay still because I’m carrying you back.” Grian said, moving forward and reaching over to grab hold of you.

“Then what’s all the fuss about?”

The moment you’ve been dreading, to tell him four simple words ‘I don’t trust you’. This game is one man for themself. No feelings or emotions have to be taken into consideration, and all relationships are out the door, yet you cant help but be disheartened to tell him the truth.

“Its- Its just…” You cant find the words, a thousand voices are speaking in your head yet the one you have doesn’t have anything to say.

“Do you not trust me?”

“…”

“If you stay here, you have zero chances of getting out alive. If you go with me, at least there’s still a slither of hope.”

“With the way you say it, you make sound so easy.”

“I just want to help. And to put justice to the agreement we made at the beginning”

You recall the start of this world, where all the worries of death are far, and alliances are being built. Now’s the complete opposite.

“Grian, this game is life or death. Trust is more rare than diamonds you should remember.” you murmur.

“And more valuable. I know with all the disasters and chaos I’ve caused, its hard to trust me. But just this once please let me help. After this, we owe each other nothing.”

You couldn’t keep up the facade you were putting on. You knew you needed help, and you were willing to trust him. ‘Just this once’ you promise yourself knowing damn well it won’t the last.

I meant for it to be male reader, I swear, but since I was sleepy at the time I wrote, it ended up being in a headcannon type of way, which means almost no dialogue so the gender is not mentioned. I also write in second person a lot so there's also that.

What fear of rejection can cause

The first time Impulse caught a glimpse of you was during 3rd life.

His first feeling towards you was confusion. You were collecting wood at a random forest just by the time he was passing by it, some people would call it fate.

You were talking to your chat, small creatures that resembled allays, each of them with different personalities and distinguishing features. It took him a few seconds to remember who you were, he had never seen you before, having found out about you through Grian when he told everyone he had invited an old friend of his to the 3rd life server. Looking briefly over your features which matched with the ones his avian friend mentioned was all it took for him to shrug it off, not yet deeming you an enemy.

As expected from him, he went to chat with you, introduce himself and link a face to a name. Your chat seemed pleasantly surprised with his sudden appearance, excitedly chirping while spinning around your head and his, their little sounds unintelligible to his ears even though you could hear them yell his name very clearly. Impulse caught on to what they were doing quickly, having already gone through the same situation many times with other people. He smiled at the small beings and waved.

The first conversation of you guys was okay, awkward, if you were to describe it as anything else. After that the both of you just decided to keep to yourselves, having mutual allies and friends who kept you two together, sometimes saying "hi" when you crossed paths. Nothing else was going on between you other than that.

Impulse was curious, something about you just wouldn't let him be in peace.

Sure, you guys didn't quite click when you first met, but there had to be something about you, right? Grian was friends with you for years, the others, your newfound friends, seemed to nearly mirror Grian's bond with you despite having just met you, despite not knowing you as long as he did.

Impulse should have been guilty, it couldn't have been right to follow you around like that, in secret even. But to be fair, he was guilty at the start. He even gave up following you the first time he decided to do so, but the second time… The second time he figured he had a reasonable excuse. He wanted to know more about you so that the awkwardness wouldn't happen the next time he tried to befriend you! So that you guys would click like you did with the others, you eventually would.

Hesitation kept him from even approaching you, he got used to just seeing you interact with the world and the others around you from an outsider's point of view and imagining himself going through such situations with you according to that. He didn't want to ruin the fantasy or his chance at befriending you, he knew you were a kind person, but one could only ruin so many chances, so for now, he would stick to learning more about you.

At first, this was all there was to it, curiosity, then, you started seeming like such a good friend! Perhaps your kindness was what charmed him even more, treating his friends kindly brought you some extra points in his book, the one you knew nothing about.

Kindness could only get you so far, you had come across Etho as he was messing with redstone, the redstone Impulse recognized as the bunch he had brought to him. You seemed very interested in the ore, asking a lot of questions, questions Impulse himself could have answered to you had you just directed them to him, him and not Etho. Still, a victory was a victory. The still hidden man quietly cheered behind some random bush as you two spoke, too engrossed in the matter to notice a grown man almost jumping around in giddiness as he found out a new thing you two had in common. Something that could possibly bring you two together!

All good things must come to an end. It was hard seeing you reach your red life and die before him and not even be able to help you, the only thing he was able to do was avenging you, bringing your killers down. Still, it was all fun and games between friends, that was, before he noticed that was it. You weren't a hermit, you were on this series because of Grian but Xisuma was the admin of the Hermitcraft server, the things there were different and Grian could only do so much considering Xisuma didn't have the least of clues about who you were.

When that dawned on him, all hell broke loose, you guys weren't close enough to keep contact and neither was it normal for him to just ask his friends what server you were at currently or for your communicator ID. As much as he could do so, he also just couldn't, or at least that's what his brain told him. Was this what fear of rejection felt like?

He brainstormed a plan right off the bat. He had to convince Xisuma to white list you. And the most natural way for doing so was to bring your mutual friends to convince him. All members from 3rd life, that was enough to bring you back to his reach, where he could learn about you, much to his delight. Keeping you at arm's length was just way safer than letting you wander around servers he didn't trust or know.

At this point, he couldn't quite deny anymore that something was wrong. Despite trying over and over to think about it from all perspectives, the way things were going was alarming, at this point even you could feel something was wrong. Feeling eyes on you even while you were inside your base, in a peaceful server like Hermitcraft, it couldn't have been normal.

The pile of excuses became bigger as Impulse's pupils dilated in pure affection, snapping the picture of a perfect moment, the very first one of many to come, a soft smile blossomed at his face along with redness following from his cheeks to the tip of his ears as you brought your first pet home, smiling from ear to your beloved animal's form despite whatever it was. He wished he could have had that memory with you, that was the excuse, not only was it a one time thing but it was also important to him, the photo would work as a memory of you together. Despite him not actually being there, he decided to delude himself to believe it was like he was there anyway, taking a selfie with you as if you were aware of his presence.

Only, it wasn't a one time thing.

He had a whole collection.

It was only right, right? It's not like you can only have one single memory and call it done. Memories are supposed to be kept in group, it's a prettier word when said in plural! That's actually something you said once, he wrote it down in his little notebook of you.

That's what he would have told you to defend himself when you first saw his special 'collection of memories'.

You stared at the many pictures of you in the chest. It was a double chest full. of. pictures. of. you.

You rested your face against the palm of your hands, releasing the wooden lid which closed with a soft thud. You didn't mean to find this chest, you didn't even remember what you had come here for in the first place. The first question that went through your mind was how on earth did he have the time to take all of those pictures, like, what. Then, the other questions flooded in, your mind felt like it was imploding, how were you even supposed to approach this matter with him? You weren't even close, acquaintances at best!

You looked up again for a moment, the lid of the chest had a faint engraving, one you didn't even notice when you came looking around for- Whatever you came here looking for, was it redstone? You were partially sure Mumbo had told you earlier Impulse would have loads of it and not have any problem with trading it with you for something else. That's what you wandered here for, you just wanted to grab the redstone and leave a note and some diamonds, this turned dark pretty quick.

"My favorites <3" Read the engraving, a little heart crudely drawn at the end of the sentence. That explained why every single one of the photos seemed to have little hearts drawn all over them. You confirmed your theories as you opened the lid again with shaking hands, hearts of varying shapes, sizes and colors on each picture. With a scowl, you scrunched up your nose as you noticed something.

"Bro didn't even get my best angle"

The sound of a wooden door opening made you panic, silently but quickly closing the chest you were looking at and opening the one right by the side of it, almost sighing in relief as you saw it was full of ores and redstone, exactly what you had come here looking for.

The person seemed to pause at the door for a solid second before speaking. "[Name]? Hey- What are you doing here?" Hearing the familiar voice and looking behind you confirmed your suspicions of the person in question being Impulse himself, you catched him glancing at the chest right by your side as you turned around, his nervous smile dropping as he frowned, closing his eyes and taking a deep breath before speaking slowly. "How much did you see?"

You ran your hand through your hair, messing it up. "This chest," You pointed to the one you had just pretended you never opened while confessing you did. You didn't even know why you were the one confessing when you were supposed the one to be asking the questions here, then again this was the type of situation you never expected to be a part of, imagine being the victim! "Why- When did this even start?-" You barked questions at him as you moved to stand up. "This is creppy man! This is not okay."

"I'll explain everything, it's not like there's a lot to explain anyway… Just sit there, somewhere, make yourself comfortable."

With a bad feeling in your gut you moved to look for a place to sit, just now noticing how big of a place this was. It's impossible for Impulse to be able to function and have the time to not only stalk you but also build such things, this base seemed like one of his biggest he had ever done, even if more hidden than normally.

You turned around for a moment, the shock distracting you mind for just enough time to feel a sudden pain at the back of your head and black out, almost hitting the floor before Impulse caught you and sat you down at a couch, the softest one in there and his personal favorite.

He sighed in relief, calmly walking a few steps back and dropping his axe back in his inventory, as if he had not just hit you with it's handle. He stoped close to the door, pressing a button that made his redstone circuit work, successfully locking the only entrance to his house, and the only exit, too.

Good thing he thought ahead and hid his actual favorite photos well, well enough so you didn't see them yet, he would show them to you later, sure, but right now it wouldn't be a good start to your new relationship. He hoped you would be quick to accept this new "arrangement". It's not like he's letting you go soon, anyway.

No, no. Not really. Now he has all the time in the world to get closer to you, he made sure to fill this new house of the both of you with all sort of things he knew you liked. Now he has all the chances in the world to befriend you without awkwardness, eventually it's gonna be impossible to feel awkward with him when he's the only one you have to talk to, right?

Maybe meeting him at the forest really was fate, probably a warning, one you disregarded.

What is the Hermitshipping Big Bang? The Hermitshipping Big Bang is a virtual creative event for fans who enjoy the relationships between the characters from Hermitcraft and a variety of other online Minecraft series. In this event, writers will create works of fanfiction about the relationships between these characters, and then artists will create pieces of fanart to accompany each work of fanfiction. For additional information, please see the Rules Page and the Timeline Page. How do I get involved? Our sign-ups will open on June 10. Follow this blog for updates!

Can I sign up for multiple positions? Yes! You may sign up for as many roles (writer, artist, beta reader, mod, pinch hitter) as you like. All we ask is that you please be realistic about the time and energy you have to commit to this event.

If I’ve already signed up for a position and I change my mind, how do I change my roles? Once you are in the event Discord server, changing roles is as simple as contacting a mod! However, after June 24 (Writer Check-in 1) nobody may add the writer role, though writers can drop their role at any time.

What is the timeline? Please see the Timeline Page for more details. At a glance, writers will create their fics from mid-June through early September. Then, artists will be paired with writers to create art based on their fics from late September through mid-December. Finally, fics and art will be posted throughout the whole month of January. Which fandoms are part of this event? Hermitcraft is the central fandom that this event focuses on, but any related online Minecraft content is totally included too! If you are interested in creating for a fandom that is not listed here, don’t worry! This is by no means a comprehensive list. And if you’re still unsure, feel free to send an ask. The main limiting factor is whether we can find you a partner who knows and loves the same characters and ships.

Does my fic/ship have to include/focus on members of the Hermitcraft SMP specifically? Nope! This is essentially a “Hermitshipping and friends” Big Bang. The main relationship in your fic does not have to include a Hermit. Your fic does not have to even include any Hermits as characters. Your fic may ship Hermits with other Hermits (examples: Keralis/xB, Grian/Mumbo/Scar). Your fic may ship Hermits with non-Hermits (examples: Martyn/Ren, Etho/Quackity). Your fic may ship non-Hermits with non-Hermits (examples: Jimmy/Joel, Katherine/Shelby). As long as the characters you are writing about are from a fandom considered “related” to Hermitcraft, you should be good to go!

What content is allowed? Is anything off-limits? Any works centered around the relationships between characters of the Hermitcraft and related SMPs are allowed. This includes works set in an Alternate Universe, works that involve Original Characters (as long as they are not the focus), Explicit and Mature works (for participants who are age 18 or older), works centered around polyamorous relationships, works focused on queerplatonic relationships, and works involving any theme you wish. There is no specific off-limits content, but keep in mind that it may be more difficult to match works containing sensitive content with an artist. How long do written fanworks need to be? Short answer: 5,000 words Long answer: Writers may submit fics of any length to this event—we will promote them on our socials and accept them into the Hermitshipping Big Bang 2023 Collection on AO3 regardless of word count. However, works under 5,000 words will not automatically qualify for art and will not be matched to an artist (though they may possibly still receive Doodles!). As works increase in length, they will qualify for more art, detailed in our Art Tiers. Can I use a fic I’ve already started writing? Yes, if you already have a head start, that’s great! However, there are two caveats to this:

Your fic must not be posted anywhere yet, e.g. a fic with a few chapters already up on Archive does not qualify for this event.

Your fic must not be entered into any other event, e.g. a fic written for the Hermitshipping Big Bang cannot also be entered into the WIP Big Bang.

Fics in the Doodle Tier don’t automatically get paired with an artist, so anything you can doodle for those works will be a wonderful gift as they would not otherwise get art.

With our art tier system, less confident artists have the opportunity to create multiple, simpler pieces rather than one complex piece to fulfill higher tiers.

If you are partnered with a work that qualifies for a higher art tier, odds are good that you will be on a small team of artists, so the responsibility will not fall solely on one person.

You’ll get to experience creating with a community of artists who want to see you grow. Get help, support, and advice from other artists!

Based on the Interest Check, authors will likely outnumber artists, so your participation will make a difference!

I won’t be able to create fanfiction or fanart for this event, but I still want to be involved somehow. Is there some way I can help out? Yes! There are several ways you can help out, in fact. Can I still participate? Yes, you can. Your fic will still end up as part of the collection, but you have some choices:

You can make an Archive of Our Own account just for the Big Bang (or continue to use it after!) If you do this later in the event, keep in mind that there is a waiting list. You can also use an invitation code from an existing AO3 user to create an account immediately.

i love the detail of it being in death order when everyone joins the game. cleo dying first, then with a dialogue line separating her line from everyone else’s, bc she was the only hermit to permadie in ep 7. very clever i love it

the writing of ren’s internal panic/fear!! man!! i love the line “The fear in his body explodes, cold but not freezing him in place, and he readies himself to face a devil.” it’s so perfect for ren’s character and it makes me really anticipate what happens next, even though i’ve already read this!

i absolutely LOVE your characterization. usually in a fic like this, there’s always obvious favourites yk? (i’m guilty of this myself lol) but with this it seems like you’ve done everyone justice and everyone is written so so well

I'm actually really proud of that detail :0) in the same chapter, the order X describes everyone was supposed to be the same order, but so many people ended up being described in pairs that it didn't really come through.

also, small personal headcanon as to why everyone is so tired that doesn't really come up in the fic, the time between servers didn't pass exactly the same, so the last day of 3rd life was a Friday, and everyone respawned back on a Tuesday, leaving their bodies to deal with a couple days long "empty" period. does that make sense? fuck if I know but it sounds like it does in my head.

The Watchers’ Will

3L!Grian x gn!Reader (platonic)

Summary: Grian was an old friend of yours, and the two of you joined the Third Life server together. You knew he was excited to win the competition, but you didn’t know just how far he’d go to secure victory.

Warnings: Angst, reader dies (but they become a ghost), mentions of explosions and other deaths.

Note: First attempt at angst, let’s go! Also, some events may have been shifted around, I binge-watched 3rd Life and some things blurred a bit. Call it creative liberty.

You and Grian joined the Third Life server together, and knew from the beginning that you’d be a team.

Scar was an unexpected addition to your team after Grian accidentally took his first live via creeper.

Of the three of you, Scar reached his red life first. Even with three pairs of eyes rather than two, no one saw that ravine.

You lost your first life in a simple accident, when you got caught in a cave with a swarm of creepers.

Your second life was lost to a much more intentional force. During the battle for the Red Desert, you were caught in the explosions that destroyed the landscape and were quickly finished off by Martyn.

After the battle, you respawned in the bunker you’d made in case of this sort of thing. You picked up the iron armor you’d made as a backup and headed out.

The bright sun reflected off the remaining desert sand as you emerged from the bunker. Blinking the light out of your eyes, you looked around. The land was torn apart, pock-marked with the aftermath of explosions. No one stood in the wreckage.

You grabbed your communicator. Scrolling through the chat messages, you scanned for the names of your allies. Grian had died. Just once, though. There was no death message for Scar, so they had both survived. You sighed in relief. Lowering the device, you scanned the sands once more.

Movement caught the corner of your eye. Turning, you saw the familiar red sweater of Grian as he dug his way out of the sand. Walking over to the hole he was crawling out of, you offered a hand and a smirk. “Great minds think alike, ey?”

He clasped your wrist, giving a smile and a nod in answer. “The fighting’s over, then? I haven’t looked at the chat; how’s Scar?”

You hauled your friend up. “Alive, at least. No idea where he is, or any of the Dogwarts lot.” He nodded.

“Shall we find him then, before he does end up losing his last life?” You gave a grin in return.

The two of you set off toward the remains of Monopoly Mountain, where the skeleton of the sand castle still stood. The going was a bit slower than it used to be as you and Grian had to avoid or jump over the pits caused by the explosions from the battle for the Red Desert.

As you reached the path that led up to the ruins of your old home, you thought to assess your gear. Quickly checking through your equipment, you ensured that your sword was safe at your hip and your armor was put on properly. You didn’t have much else, as your old tools and weapons had surely been taken after you died.

Making it to the top of Monopoly Mountain, you and Grian stepped up to Pizza’s grave. It was somehow still intact, despite the many explosions that had ravaged the nearby landscape. You both lay a hand on the headstone, taking a moment of silence for your fallen companion.

You stepped past the grave, up to the edge of the cliff. Raising a hand to shade your eyes, you looked out past the desert to the forest beyond. There was no sign of Scar, but a plume of smoke spiraled into the sky from somewhere beyond the trees. “I… don’t see him. Should we go to-”

A flash of pain burst across your back. You let out a gasp, spinning to face your attacker. You expected to see one of the members of Dogwarts, who’d hidden in the remnants of the sand castle, or maybe even Scar- he was on his red life, after all. Instead, you came face-to-face with Grian. “Wha-”

He swung his sword again, clashing against your chestplate.

You took a small step backwards, reaching to the iron sword on your belt. “Grian, why are you attacking me?” You brought up your weapon to block his next strike. His attacks held far more force than the slashes he’d tried in your practice spars.

“I’m sorry, but I have to do this!” You were forced against the edge of the cliff, barely deflecting blows that struck with bone-shattering strength. You never thought Grian could be this ferocious. You could feel your health depleting rapidly, as you didn’t have a shield and couldn’t fend off all his attacks.

You struck out desperately as you reached low health. You felt your blade connect a few times, but it wasn’t enough to force your attacker off.

“Hey, hey, hey, what’s happening here?” An incredulous shout came from the path leading to the peak where you and Grian fought. Glancing over, you saw Scar bounding up the rough road.

“I’m sorry! The watchers need me to do this!” In your brief moment of distraction, Grian struck again.

“Grian!” Scar’s call came too late. Your old friend stabbed his sword into your chest, piercing straight through you.

<Y/N was slain by Grian.>

The feeling of dying was strange. On the one hand, you felt the solid thump as your body hit the ground. On the other, you remained standing, with the sword through your now-incorporeal form.

Blinking, the world seemed… dimmer? Less saturated? Glancing around, you saw other forms take shape. Jimmy, Cleo, Skizz, the other players who’d died.

Jimmy had a concerned expression, while Skizz was more surprised. Cleo seemed almost happy, and waved to you. You hesitantly waved back.

You tried to speak, to ask what was happening, but when you opened your mouth nothing came out. Seeing what you were trying to do, Cleo held up her communicator, pointing at it. Looking down, you saw that your comms device had seemingly come into the afterlife with you. Picking it up, you saw some messages pop onto the screen, in a chat just for the spectators.

<ZombieCleo: Welcome to the afterlife y/n!>

<SolidarityGaming: I never expected Grian would do that! Are you okay?>

<SolidarityGaming: Well, I guess you’re dead too. I mean emotionally?>

Looking back up at the other dead players, you shrugged. Turning, you watched what was happening between Grian and Scar.

“What do you mean ‘you had to do it?’” Scar sounded in shock.

“The watchers needed me to!” Grian looked nearly in tears. “I didn’t want to!” His voice was choked.

You looked up at the other spectators, confused. Skizz had gone, presumably to his still-living allies. Cleo shrugged, and your communicator pinged.

<ZombieCleo: Not us.>

Returning your gaze to the other residents of the Red Desert, you saw that Grian had left. Scar stood next to Pizza’s grave, pulling out some trapdoors and stone from his inventory. As you watched, he built another grave beside the llama’s. A chest was placed on top, containing the gear you had when you died. Your bloody sword was laid on top. The final piece was a sign, denoting who the memorial remembered:

Scar stood at the completed grave for a minute, head bowed. “I don’t know if you’re watching, y/n.” You started. “If you are, know that I won’t let him get away with this.” Turning, Scar made his way down the remainders of what used to be your home.

Grian stood, victorious, over Bdubs’ body. Turning, he faced Scar. “We did it! Scar, we don’t have to fight, we can be friends again!”

You couldn’t believe your ears. Grian had betrayed you, literally backstabbed you, and he was willing to ally with Scar now? Did you really mean so little to him?

The rest of the watchers floating around the scene frowned. This was a game to the death, not a game of friendship.

Cleo nudged you. Glancing at her, she raised her comms. You glanced down to see a message on yours.

<ZombieCleo whispers to you: They were your allies. It’s your call.>

You looked up at her and nodded. She returned it, then moved back to the circle of spectators.

Scar looked… hopeful? Confused? You weren’t entirely sure what emotions were flickering through his face. Before he could respond, you typed a message into chat.

Grian’s face fell as he read your words. You only smiled.

Like holy shit that was so dramatic and I LOVED IT!!! Ren always pops off with lore and drama and I’m living for it.

Ren is already a huge flirt, and with the new king thing going on he shifts to more of a romantic. Gently grabbing your hand and kissing the back of it, spoiling you with riches, the whole thing.

If you were a member of dogwarts, Ren would see you as a respectable warrior and member of his army, leading the dogwarts troops to victory via his command.

If you weren’t a member of dogwarts he would try so hard to try and convince you to join. Pulling out all the stops just to get you to join him, claiming that he they would treat you better than anyone else of the server.

Also? Would make a pretty good yandere. Keeping you locked in renchantings basement, claiming that he needs to keep you safe from his enemies, “they might take you as hostage or even freaking kill you!” He would be very stern but soft at the same time. Absolutely no leaving your room under any circumstance, but he would still come in and shower you with love all the time. Constantly bringing you gifts and constantly praising you for being so good for your king. Kisses and cuddles are guaranteed every time he walks through the door your prohibited from going near. Also pet names, so many pet names. He really goes full lover boy to distract you from the fact you can’t leave.

(Also!!!!! I’m currently writing a 3rd life Ren x reader that takes place after Grians triple kill :) it started off short but it’s becoming a whole one shot)
