Google AI Overview
Yes, some universities have a tradition of including a "snake fight" portion in thesis defenses, where students fight one of the university's snakes. The quality of the student's thesis determines the size of the snake they must fight, with better theses resulting in smaller snakes. After the committee reads the thesis, they tell the snake master how good it is, who then chooses the snake. In some northern European countries, an external examiner called the "opponent" fights the snake on the student's behalf, with the opponent's skill level based on the thesis's quality.

Would anybody be willing to share (real) screenshots of the Google AI overview saying something that is very off or untrue? I need some examples for a work teaching activity on the dangers of relying on generative AI in science.

I hate that I legally can't post pictures of this, but FERPA. Anyways. I had two students both google "The Trail of Tears". Both used capitals as needed. Both spelled it correctly. The AI overview for them both should have been the same. But guess what? It wasn't. One student had the Trail of Tears painted in a factual way that didn't sugarcoat how awful it was. The other student had it in the most white-washed bare-bones basic facts. The interesting thing I noticed? The factual version was given to the student of color. The white-washed one was given to a white student. I didn't say anything, but they sure noticed. They had a very eye-opening moment when they realized that AI Overview is not trustworthy.

i just felt like i needed to make a record of something here:
so, i want to know the answer to a specific question, but i didn't want google ai to give me an answer so i appended "i don't want ai results i will blow up google if an ai answers this."
and guess what i didn't see at the top of the results? an ai answer.

i was finally putting Restitution on wattpad and i started thinking about AI summaries and how i would have loved if JARVIS were still around in the time period of AI Text Summaries
Tony picks up his phone and it just shows "Spangles Requesting you turn down the insufferably grating cacophony of ruckus coming from the lab currently." and then he opens the message and it's just a simple "hey can you turn the music down please?"
Bucky's phone goes off and he's in the middle of polishing his arm so he asks Jarvis to read a summary out loud. "Sam Wilson is inquiring if you, the stupidest loser alive, Captain Racoon Eyes, want anything from the grocery store." and Bucky's eye twitches and he asks what it literally says and it's like, "Sam Wilson says: hey loser want anything from the store?"
Or the total opposite, where Thor excitedly shows Natasha how Loki texted him to ask if he wants to hang out for a little while because Loki enjoys Thor's company. But then Natasha explains that's just a summary and opens it up and it's like "My Brother If you want to come to my room at some point today, I am willing to tolerate you, but you cannot stay for more than thirty minutes at a time. Choose your socialization window wisely."
anyway my brain just ran wild, but the actual point of this post is to say that Restitution is now on wattpad in its entirety. eventually, everything will make its way over there (including the bonus features) but for right now the only places you can read everything is AO3 and ff.net. thanks!

Ask A Genius 1332: ChatGPT, AGI, and the Future of Multimodal AI
Rick Rosner: You had ChatGPT summarize my life using publicly available sources, which it processed into a coherent narrative. There were several minor errors—for example, it claimed I spent ten years in high school. That is inaccurate. I returned to high school a few times over the course of a decade, but I did not attend for ten continuous years. Despite these inaccuracies, the summary…

Farmer in 1830
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
During the 1830s in the United States, farming underwent significant changes and advancements. Here’s a brief summary of the state of farming during that period:
Labor and Production: About 250-300 labor-hours were required to produce 100 bushels (5 acres) of wheat. This was done using a walking plow, brush harrow, hand broadcast of seed, sickle, and flail1.
Technological Advances: The 1830s saw the introduction of the McCormick reaper, which was patented in 1834. This invention significantly reduced the labor required for harvesting crops2.
Agricultural Shifts: The decade marked a transition from manual labor-intensive farming to more mechanized and commercial farming. This shift was facilitated by the growing use of factory-made agricultural machinery, which increased farmers’ need for cash and encouraged commercial farming2.
Livestock and Crops: The period also saw the introduction and breeding of various cattle breeds like Hereford, Ayrshire, Galloway, Jersey, and Holstein. Additionally, there was growth in manufacturing, which brought many labor-saving devices to the farm home1.
Housing and Lifestyle: Rural housing improved with the use of balloon-frame construction, reflecting the overall improvement in farmers’ lives and the agricultural economy1.
This decade was pivotal in setting the stage for the agricultural boom that would follow in the mid to late 19th century, laying the foundation for the United States to become a major agricultural producer.
