Lucifer is a serial killer who goes by the name “Devil” because of his brutal way of killing people + because there is always a pentagram drawn near his work. He hunts people who he thinks that weren’t punished enough by the law. Other than that, he’s the boss of a big company.

He had a wife before, Lilith. She was cool at the start, but then became more and more abusive, especially to Lu. They got divorced and Lilith demanded Lucifer’s money at a point he almost failed to give despite owning a huge company. And the worst part, she got away with what he did to him, not a single punishment.

Adam on the other hand, is a thief and assasin who lost most of his moralties a long time ago after everyone he knew turned against him. He’s working for Michael, he accepted his offer because he needed money for the medical treatment his daughter had to take.

Speaking of his daughter, Emily, let me tell you how she was born.

Adam was at his lowest, he had just lost his boys, his wife and his farm not so long ago. Eve went to a different country, Cain was in juvie and Abel was dead. He is a bartender and barely making enough money for himself.

Then he meets Lilith. The same Lilith who is still married to Lucifer. They start a relationship and Adam thinks he could finally move on from Eve. But NO! Lilith is an abusive piece of shit to him as well. Her abuse towards Adam grows more and more until one day… She does undescribable things to him and gets pregnant. And kind of leaves the diseased child and fades out of Adam’s life once the kid is born.

One day these traumatized boys meet. Adam is robbing the house of a rich man and Lucifer is there to kill the man. They see each other, then Lucifer attacks Adam. He has him on the floor ready to be killed but it clicks in him that this is also a criminal and wouldn’t dare report him. Then they go to their seperate ways.

Or so they think. They keep stumbling to each other and they slowly fall in love.

I love giving them trauma.

Anyway. Wow. That sure is a lot. It's interesting how Lilith was first with Lucifer, and then with Adam. It mixes things up from the canon. Also Lilith being evil? Always a big fan of that.

I'm guessing Lucifer doesn't know about Lilith being with Adam, right? and that Emily is also Lilith's child??? How did Lilith give birth to Emily without Lucifer knowing? Maybe she left him right after she got pregnant? Hm. Either way imagine the absolute DRAMA when Lucifer finds out what she did to Adam. Oh boy, that woman is going to regret everything lol

Ignoring everything about Helluva and Hazbin. Who would you say is your favorite character in both and what character are you most excited to see in Hazbin? For me my favorite characters are Blitz and Angel Dust, but I’m most excited to see Husk and what his deal is.

Before my disappointment in both series these two were my favs: Alastor. I liked that he seemed like a classic serial killer in some ways. He was charming and nice, but cruel and sadistic beneath the surface. It was sort of inferred he preyed on the innocent and tore to bigger bads to shreds. But part of him also was just some old fashioned guy into fashionable parties, old radio technology, and is an aro/ace rep. It left things open for interpretation. Maybe he just wanted to join Charlie to laugh at other people's failures. But also maybe he wants to protect a fresh talent; help Charlie realize her true potential and give into her demonhood instead of denying it. Maybe he sought validation for his misdeeds- that turning back was never an option despite perhaps secret regrets within. Maybe he wanted to interrupt the status quo, he knew Charlie was going to stir up chaos, everyone was already talking about her, she is a HUGE news sensation regardless of positive or negative, and that would be good for his radio business since he is in a big rivalry with Vox, the TV overlord. But also, perhaps, he was manipulating Charlie because he had a secret bigger goal, maybe trying to get to Lucifer or the throne. Maybe he's just securing more power for himself by associating with the King of Hell's daughter. There was just a lot of potential to his character.

~ As for Helluva, I think Stolas was my favorite. He was a posh, manipulative, selfish high-class demon with connections who cheated on his wife and kinda left his daughter (who he once cared deeply for) for some low-class asshole imp. The entire operation is an illegal power trade for sex. He's not only destroying his reputation amongst Hell, but he could also get all of Hell into trouble because IMP's carelessness- the video evidence of demons being real... he's violated the statute of secrecy and can have everything taken from him potentially. It's such high risk for little reward. Makes you wonder if he just got bored with his life, or was unhappy in his marriage but didn't feel like it was socially acceptable to divorce his wife and leave his kid. Just feels like whatever the case, it was a thrill for him. He hires Blitz as his "knight in shining armor" to "protect him" when he is literally a powerful demon that is so uninterested and unworried about demons attempting to kill him. It's all a fantasy. It's all fake. He never needed Blitz's protection (when he wants it anyway)

Until he started catching feelings over his fantasy Blitz, so he started asking him on dates only to get shut down. When Blitz finally asks him... he's ecstatic, only to realize they don't actually have any chemistry with each other. That Blitz actually only used him and didn't actually wanna go on a date with him. And then, Stolas finally realized he doesn't actually know who Blitz is outside of his current status as an assassin. The relationship is taboo and Blitz doesn't even seem to want him. Stolas realizes he gave up the life he had (a bad and boring one maybe) for a fantasy (not real) He's ruined everything. He isn't even aware that his wife is trying to get him assassinated. He isn't self-aware of his disrespectful manipulative classism that upsets Blitz so much. ("impish little plaything" / "Little ones") He isn't aware how much he's hurt his daughter and how much she blames him for everything since he would and has chosen Blitz over her. He isn't even aware that Blitz has legitimately protected him and has his own personal baggage with relationships that holds him back. The potential to see a prince and a pauper on-screen develop respect, go from fake one night stands to potential actual lovers... there's so much you can do with this.

Stolas was a pompous prince dethroned and turned humble by his misdeeds and mistakes. Unrewarded in his arc for change. Set up for destruction, set up for failure. He's a tragic character. The chaos his arc creates is so boundless and entertaining.

The potential behind these two, the initial set ups... who they are... what they could be... I loved it.

The Final Judgement: My Overall Thoughts on Emio (V1)

MAJOR SPOILER SHIELD FOR THIS POST. READ THIS AFTER YOU PLAY THE GAME IN FULL.

Also side note I wrote this before I found out about the bonus chapter after the main game's story so I'll make an updated version of this after I play the bonus chapter!

So... I finished Emio. My personal Jumanji for the past month plus now. This is what I got from the ending...

I was right about Missing Man being our killer. Sure, I thought some proxy shit was going on and was dead set on Fukuyama being part of all of this, but I never doubted Missing Man was the killer, or at least one of them lol.

I was also right about the child theory sort of! Sure, Emiko wasn't the daughter of Missing Man, but she still meant a lot to him none the less. And besides, I was switching between different possible relationships with this character to begin with. I started off with who I originally thought was going to be named Corrine being a love interest, then aged her down to being a child and thought she was Emio's kid, but in the end she was his sister. Close enough. Thanks fake Emio twitter account for giving me at least something to work with lol.

And finally, I was right about Missing Man Jeff the Killer-ing his face. My god the shock I felt when the face reveal happened lol.

I was wrong about the proxy theory but eh whatever Emio being literally Jeff the Killer (specifically the Pastra version of him) is actually kind of better and kinda funny lol. To think Pastra predicted Emio with a creepypasta rewrite... huh...

I don't have many thoughts about the whole Junko faking the Smiling Man killing Eisuke. Just wow. I did NOT see that coming.

I'm glad that in the end Makoto was found :D

With all of this being said... I still have a lot of questions...

What happened to Emiko? Why did Missing Man talk to the first victim? Why was he jumping from place to place so much before the beginning of the Serial Girl Murders? If the first bag from the Serial Girl Murders was different from the others, what could that mean? What's with the two bag mask variants? What made Missing Man go over the edge and start killing? When did the legend get altered from something sad to a story about the unholy amalgamation of Slenderman/Jeff the Killer goin' around killing sad girls? What was the OG story? And WHERE THE FUCK DID CHILD ABUSE COME INTO THE STORY?? WHY DID THE ESRB RATING MENTION THAT AND A FATHER SLAPPING HIS CHILD??

Anyways, with all of this being said, my final rating for Emio: 8/10. Had me waiting until the very end but it left a bunch of unanswered questions. The post credits scene kinda made it seem that there's going to be more. DLC??? I hope so. They can't leave us with this many questions like this!!

Y'know, I think Atalanta just has that type of personality I would not be compatible with in general, like, we would be business rivals maybe because I'd always feel like I have to one-up her😭 that being said, she is kinda growing on me in the span of these few days because I can see a gentle and caring side in her from some of the things you've written and that's really cute. She loves in the way she knows best and that is an admirable trait, so she has my respect.

Ahhh, but Vivien brings light to my life, reading about him is so fun!! Really, just wanna walk in when he's at work, buy flowers right from the shop and then give them to him as a present. If it were up to me, he would be all pampered. I know Noelle is still sort of new but she also gives me the same vibe, I would totally treat her sweetly and I also think she would just be nice to talk to. I can imagine she'd be understanding, but then again, I guess all the yans would try to be for their darling anyway.

I'm glad that whatever I had to say was inspiring to you!! I'm also sorry because it wasn't a very eloquent message at all, but I'm happy you could extract what was of value from it. Atalanta is always such a fun character for me to write because she is always trying to put on this front of being calm and cool and collected and for the most, she truly is like that, but she has these moments of vulnerability with her Darling that I like best because it shows her as being just Ata and not Atalanta Montclair. She truly is the product of her upbringing; she is somehow both her mother's daughter and her father's daughter at the same time. She loves her Darling in the only way she knows how. Even if it isn't perfect, I like to think I manage to convey the high esteem she holds you in. She holds her Darling in such regard, she just doesn't know how to properly protect and care for you.

Oh Vivien is my little guy, I love him so much. I'm glad you enjoy him. He is probably the least dangerous of my yanderes, at least towards Darling (remember, he is technically a serial killer). He has had such a hard life, I can't bring myself to write him in any angst because I just want him to be happy.

Noelle is new and I'm still fleshing her out as a person. She strikes me as someone who stays silent a lot, not because she's shy but just because she has nothing to say to you. But when she's with her sisters or with Ata, she's funny and charming. I think the thing that endears me most to her is her fear of losing what she has. She has clawed her way up from the depths of the hell that was her childhood and now that she has reached the top, she would sooner die than give up her lifestyle, and that includes her Darling. I think she's the most controlling yan (more on this later, random fan I got your ask and I'm working on it, I swear, I'm just balls deep in the neuromuscular junction rn) because of this fear of hers. I should write something to try and shake her to her very core and see what comes out.

Ah, your messages are so kind. I really do find comfort and happiness in kind messages like this. I always want to know what you guys think about the characters and kindness about my writing and my birthday is just the sugar on the cream. At the age of 18 you start getting called to be a jury, But for me it was the age of 11 and it wasn't a juror it was a plaintiff or witness I don’t remember. I didn’t look too much into it, I just prepared to testify against someone I loved. My mother yes I loved her she might be the devil wearing human skin but I still cared about her. Now that I think about it from where I am at in life now  I most definitely didn’t love her.  I remember clearly sitting next to John wearing a black dress. (It’s funny how things come full circle because I stopped wearing dresses and I forgot why but while writing this I remembered that I have bad memories around it.) I don’t Remember  much about the courtroom. My therapist has taught me how to block most of this stuff out so that I don't have to deal with the nightmares anymore. But one thing that is permanently burned in my head is when My mother walked in except she didn't look like my mother this time she looked like she was a serial killer. She still looked like the woman who raised me but I could see an evil in her eyes, an evil I hope to never see on my  own. An evil that everyone else thought would appear in me. That was until I started my new life I mean people know me know my mom but I’ve learned how to just let it be that’s why I’m writing this book I want people to relize that I hat her as much as everyone else maybe ever more sure I didn’t title this I’m glad my mom died which is what I wanted to but Jeannette Mcurdy took that title before I even thought about writing this. Anyway She was clearly drunk and high. The words that I remember is when the judge asked,  

"how i knew the defendant." 

John said, "She's the daughter of the defendant."

My mom shouted out, "Daughter I've never had a Daughter. I've never seen this person a day in my life."

I looked down at the ground knowing all the bad stuff that my mom had done but this person was still my mom. The person that used to let me cuddle her when I was sick on the couch. What had I done wrong to the world that made this be my life. I don't want anyone else to have to go through this pain; it's enough trauma for a lifetime that nothing can fix. I thought of the reason I had said theater to John when he asked me what I wanted to do. I said it because I wanted to use a stage to echo my voice for anyone in the world who was hurting or atleast where I lived for now. One by one the witnesses went on the stands until it was my turn. John wasn't the lawyer but I had refused to have anyone but jhon ask me the Questions.

John asked  "Hello Miss. Y/L/N  where did you find out all of this stuff? "

"Hello sir in these diarys of  my moms she wrote everything shes ever done in these she also gave the location of where she hid the bodies," I looked at the jury, 

“Everyone hates there mother once they hit double digits thats been going on for a while I would never want to do this to my mom even if she had bailed me out of jail when i was six like a good mother i would still do this when someone loses a loved one it's the hardest moment in that person's life they will go to eveery end to just get a small amount of clojure  to these families whom my mom has killed the loved ones of clojure  to the man whom my mother had me with closure to the kid i use to call my bestfriend and flirt with whom is actuall my sister closuer for me to know its okay to date both boy in girl but its not okay to cheat and murder them and i hope that god can forgive my mom one day but I know that shes my mother and shes done alot of bad stuff I would still fight to the end of earth to hear her say once in my life to me that she loves me. But i know that will never happen. my mom isn't a bad person. she's the one who let me cuddle with her when i was sick,Would turn my radio up when my favorite song would come on, Would turn on christmas movies because she knew they were my favorite this woman that stands before you today is not my mother she has her face but she doesn't have her heart the woman was not whom I knew my mother to be and in my head it's going to stay that way because im 11 and i've already gone through more trauma then most of you adults can say you have been my mom has killed several innocent people and I want to give those people that have gone through that trauma happiness for once in their life. gonna be real, the writing in the fnaf movie was bootycheeks and I believe it was held back by being a pg-13 movie

I went into the movie with lore knowledge up to when I stopped being interested in fnaf, which was around the time of fnaf 4 or sister location's release. The story within the game series is incredibly dark and should have had an R rating so they could have actually delved into the actual story and implications sprinkled throughout each game. In the fnaf games(from what I recall) all those kids died rather gruesomely via animatronics or by the hands of William Afton or other kids at the pizza place. A key point is that they all died in the pizzeria and they were all there unsupervised by any adult(it was the 80s and people loved leaving their kids unsupervised for some reason despite the sheer amount of kids being snatched up at the time) Mike Schmidt was a security guard and was one of the older sons of William Afton, Mike changed his name so he wasnt affiliated with his father I'm assuming. The fact that his father was a serial child killer who accidently killed his own daughter when making one of his animatronics also could have been used in the movie.

Despite being labelled a "horror movie" its not in anyway horror. The only jumpscare was MatPat for me because for some reason they decided to use fucking Balloon Boy as a cheap jumpscare not once, but twice. The whole movie was just piling on references for fnaf fans and hoping nobody paid attention to the writing. I was unironically kinda bored the whole time.

Mike Schmidt/Michael Afton in the movie for some reason is not William Afton's son. I dont know the Vanessa character but I do know she's from Security Breach which looks to take place in modern times or perhaps the future, for some reason in the movie she gets teleported to the late 80s or 90s as a character.

Then there's the whole thing with Mike's brother that literally makes zero sense. Why did Afton go out to the middle of buttfuck nowhere Nevada just to kidnap some kid in a forested area and then kill him? His pizzeria was already an open haven of unsupervised kids so doing all that was literally not necessary.

Also there was no phone guy even though I wanted to hear phone guy. The thing with the vhs tape was giving corny analog horror, I wanted my man phone guy, he wouldve added much more atmosphere then some dream sequences or that vhs.

I was also waiting for Mike to work at least once through those few days or maybe a fast forward to the day when phone guy got clapped and was actively dying on the phone call whilst Mike dookies himself in fear when the animatronics start disappearing and move the people there to vandalize to show up when all that is happening.

[Edit: Oh and the vandelizers that were hired to destroy the pizzeria so Mike gets fired all get offed off screen too and arent mentioned ever again even tho one of them was literally Mike's sister's babysitter like huh????]

Also the aunt????? Got folded like a lawn chair???????? And thats never addressed????? No line, no investigation or anything, they forgot the aunt got folded????

There could've been a change in the animatronics attitudes where they realize Mike is an Afton but never outright state it, like the animatronics act like children but then that changes instantly when they put two and two together and become more hostile.

So much interesting shit could have been done even if it adds its own lore but nah they dropped the ball by just filling the movie with as much references as possible without having a real coherent story.

So I remember a little bit from when I listened to this the first time: I was immediately curious because it was from the perspective of a serial killer's daughter. Like, obviously not a real serial killer's daughter, but the premise intrigued me as I used to listen to Sword and Scale true crime podcast when I would go to the gym. So already we had this gal who's had to face a lot of stigma in her life for things outside her control, and then she has to deal with the supernatural on top of that? Very interesting.

Alas, for all I started interested, I've forgotten most of her statement beyond the fact she was a daughter of a serial killer, and this in part was what pushed her into the Hunt if I remember right. I'm about to find out tho, so I'll get back to this…

So in summary, Julia's dad killed 41 people in service to the Dark to keep Julia safe after his wife (who was part of the People's Church of the Divine Host) was eaten by a creature of the Dark. He did this seemingly on behalf of the People's Church under the orders of Maxwell Rayner and was basically turned into a full time murderer funded by either the cult or Rayner himself. Of some note is that we know for sure that the last person Robert Montauk killed was a member of the cult, a Christopher Lorne (who I'm fairly certain is just a one off character). This opens up the floor to several questions:

Robert told Julia "it would soon be over" and then went to kill a cult member. At the same time, his house was attacked by the Dark, and Julia was only saved because Robert's sacrifice banished the creature seemingly. So the question is: were any of his other victims cult members or were they all innocents and this was Robert trying to sent a message to the cult?

Similarly, did he know that whatever he was doing would potentially put Julia at risk and cause her to feel like she needed to call the cops? (probably not honestly, or at least I don't think he expected her to call the cops. But, I wouldn't be surprised if he was planning on calling the cops on himself after he was done with the ritual.)

Also of note: this series of events were a good 10-13 years before the actual Dark Ritual. Could Robert have, in his own way, been trying to sabotage the plans of the cult from the inside out with his last sacrifice? Obviously Julia had never noticed anything weird happening with the shed previously at night, so potentially there was something different happening with this sacrifice.

Of final interest to me personally is we get a really good outline of what physical signs are associated with the Dark: extinguishing of lights and dark, muddy, "brackish" water and closed eyes. What's interesting to note is the addition of the polluted water in these signs. I wonder if that was pulled from popular Lovecraftian mythos imagery? Honestly, the Dark seems to most frequently pull from the Lovecraftian mythos, particularly surrounding Dagon and the fish people from "Shadow Over Innsmouth"; though the symbology and weird esoterica would be closer to something like "The Dunwich Horror" impo. However, I'm not well versed in horror, so perhaps there's another source of inspiration. I know even just pulling from games like "The Call of Cthulhu" would make just as much sense or even Silent Hill.

Anyways, I've wandered into the weeds. Needless to say, this was quite the episode and I had forgotten it entirely tbh. It's so interesting to go back and listen to these episodes again now that I know about the Fears and the larger cast of characters and see how they all connect to each other. Also, I think this might be the most credulous we've heard Mr. Jonathan Sims be for his end of Statement commentary.

hey guys do you remember when i first got into milgram and made a crazy post about haruka? im about to ramble a bit because i dont feel like making something more in depth but remember when in that post i talked about how my first impression of the girl hes with as a child was not his sister 9or friend???) but his idealized self? well i decided afterwards that both of those things can be true and the release of “all knowing all-agony” solidified that for me hey. dont walk away. let me explain. (deckard cain voice) stay a while and listen... its obvious that harukas relationship with his parents (particularly his mother) is very fraught. they clearly dont care for him. when they have a daughter who is “normal” (not an effeminate ‘son’ who is developing differently than other children) (because haruka is autistic) (if you get it you get it) they stop pretending to care about haruka and focus on the daughter instead and haruka is like what the fuck 😐... haruka killed her for 2 reasons: 1. because he was sick of being neglected by their parents who favored her, particularly their mother because idk the dad has to be absent or a serial killer considering haruka didnt even attempt to latch onto him for approval in the absence of his mothers love (dad does not want a girly “son” even if said son will join the serial killer business) (i cannot explain this further at the moment but it makes sense if youre me or tshirt) (to be brief the fact haruka had been previous validated for killing someone/something and thinks killing Again will totally earn more love and validation is so strange and makes no sense even in the context of if the death was because of his parents taxidermy hobby because theres a stark difference in killing an animal and killing a person and most taxidermied animals are already dead not killed For The Sake Of Taxidermy in this the year of 2022 so someone is a serial killer) and 2. because he was like well there can only be one girl here and youre a REAL girl which is not fair . But if youre gone i will be the girl again. #win the fact all knowing all agony starts with lines like “why was i born like this / why does it hurt so much?” and “you kept calling me ‘hopeless’, you never called me by my name / you were always comparing me to someone else / you were always generous, except towards me / i will definitely make you love me again” and him going into his mothers(?) jewelry drawer and taking a necklace (that might have been his sisters 🤨✍????) is like. there is something happening here. the insistence that “i wasnt wrong, i wasnt wrong” (which was also present weakness) during the chorus, along with pleas for someone to “hug me again as you once did” and “dont leave me alone, dont leave me” and, like the beginning of the song, “why was i born like this? why does it hurt so much?” just makes the soup in my brain start bubbling the real meat of what im trying to talk about comes from lines like “i just wanted to be your good boy. why am i crying again?” and “i will keep on killing to be a good boy”. near the end we also get “why was i born to be me? why does it hurt so much?” like, his mother only validated him when he was a “boy”, and he was killing. apparently. but doing this is painful for him. existing as a boy and also killing people(?) (things?) for attention isnt something haruka particularly wants to do but its what gets the attention he needs. i havent forgotten that in weakness he asked “how many more times do i have to do this so i can be human?” implying if he does not kill he is not human enough. but also his mother was clearly distraught at the end of the video when haruka was on a pile of animal corpses (which was an awesome visual just btw) theres something going on anyway the point im winding to is haruka is a girl actually and maybe her dad is a serial killer (who knows) her mom sucked and maybe she killed her sister out of frustration and neglect and also because she wanted to steal her gender (but haruka was a girl before her sister came into the picture make no mistake she did not decide to become a girl because her sister got more attention and love than she did. but it did prove to her in her mind that oh well if im a girl then 🤨... like do you get it?)

I had a decent time with The Pale Blue Eye, though it’s too long, too dark, and too dour--thankfully livening up when Harry Melling’s Edgar Allan Poe is on-screen, which makes you wish he was the protagonist. (Why isn’t he, by the way? Were they trying to leave open the possibility that he was the killer? Edgar Allan Poe?)

It’s also one of those movies with a huge, overly involved twist that renders everything that came before essentially nonsense and turns the last fifteen minutes of the story into a big Q&A session to explain how all this can possibly line up. I can’t discuss this without spoilers, obviously, so let’s dive in.

TPBE is about a series of murders at West Point in the 1800s. Landor, played by Christian Bale, is called in to investigate them and Poe, who is on of the students there, ends up assisting him as his inside man among the cadets. As the movie progresses, it seems like the killings are being done by devil worshipers who are murdering people in order to use their organs in dark magic rituals.

However, this turns out to be a red herring. (Yes, the MURDEROUS DEVIL CULT is a red herring.) The real killer is our protagonist, Landor. It turns out--and keep in mind that none of this is revealed or hinted at before the last scene--

Landor’s daughter was gang-raped by cadets at West Point and committed suicide. Landor decided to hunt down and kill the rapists. However, after he killed the first one, the devil worshipers decided waste not, want not, and mutilated the body to get the organs for their rituals. Landor pretended to investigate the killing, but really he was seeking out the other rapists for revenge, and when he found them, he mutilated their bodies as well to further frame the devil worshipers who everyone blamed for the deaths anyway. Also, the devil worshipers decided at the last minute to kill Poe for real instead of just mutilating corpses as they’d done up to that point, hence Landor having to kill them.

Whew.

It’s one of those twists that’s so... overweening that it borders on just being a lie. We essentially never see Christian Bale’s character as the person he really is until the last scene; until then, he’s just playing a cypher. And all I could think was... this twist would be so much better as a premise.

Imagine it. Christian Bale is out to avenge his daughter. He also has to avoid being caught. AND he has to solve the case of the devil-worshiping corpse mutilations. It’d be an old-timey Dexter!

Instead... well, imagine if Dexter was just about a handsome chap working as a blood analyst until the season finale, when it turned out he was a serial killer and had been throwing off the investigations from the inside all along. That wouldn’t be a good story, now would it? Trading in hours of suspense and plot progression for one minute of “OMG NO WAI!”

But I guess that’s the movie they wanted to make. Sorry, Edgar Allan Poe. Maybe Sylvester Stallone will finally end up making a good entry in the Poe Cinematic Universe.

okay i just finished sleep tight by jh markert and christ alive what the fuck was that. i gave it 1.75/5 on storygraph and 2 stars on goodreads bc like. girl.

so the first thing is like. the most minor thing i'm going to complain about but it definitely needed one last line by line edit. how did they fuck up the daughter's name at the end and call her julie instead of julia when julie hadn't been an established nickname for her. there were a bunch of other lines that just felt like they were repeating what we already knew or didn't need to be there like we didnt need a line saying "that tess already knew because noah had told them in the car" <- not exact idc enough to go back and look but we know. we were THERE you do not have to remind us that they know this information okay.

now onto the rest of the book. so the concept is that after serial killer posing as a priest to lure victims in is executed by the state, a cult that formed around him decides they're going to get revenge on the people who locked him up and ultimately revealed that they're going to revive him with the help of the real mastermind. which i thought the serial killer priest would have been cooler than it was but whatevs thats on me. howeverrrrrrrr one of the early chapters was from the pov of a gravedigger/grave security guy and he talks about the group he just joined but explicitly called it a cult which was so. the word cult is very loaded and high control groups do not like to use it for themselves because of that and they'll use something else like group or religion for their cult even if people on the outside are calling it a cult. have you ever met an mlm girly like come on.

the mystery itself was laid out decently enough with the eyes and not so subtle hints that were dropped but the worst part of this was the fucking weird ass attempt at portraying DID. I am going to give markert the benefit of the doubt that he was trying his best and anyone reading this review who has DID is free to comment on this but i am not under the impression that most people know when a new alter fronts and that voices don't really change especially around strangers. also other than oskar and ruth, all of noah's alters were real people and 5 of them were people who he watched die and he just took on their personalities in his head and they don't age because the people they were based on stopped aging (ie died). they talked about it like he just absorbed their souls into his headspace??? and yes they could tell when someone switched to front because of his voice and like. the fact that two of them wear glasses and will put them on to front. i might be wrong and again correct me if i am but this does not seem like how it works when systems meet strangers for the first time especially ones that get violent and upset when they cant get the alter they want to front to front.

sticking with the theme of weird insensitivities about trauma, why was fuckhead justin so insistent that tess needed to forceably relive her trauma (which was revealed at the end of the book and ngl kinda anticlimactic) to try and fill in gaps in her memory from when she was 13 because it made him upset? like dude she probably shouldn't be doing that if she doesn't want to its buried for a reason leave her alone!! and the fact that their relationship went back to business as usual after everything was so!!!!! i think they should have gotten divorced anyway there is no way this is going to work out long term sorry.

and finally i get that american police just shoot indiscriminately but killing benjamin in front of 11 young children seemed kinda unnecessary. especially when they were crowded around him and could easily have been caught in the crossfire but magically weren't and the bullets only hit ben. sorry but at least one of those kids should have had some sort of gun related injury from that if not more if you were going to kill ben.
