In the 1970s, Peter Laughner was a founding figure in a primordial ooze of what would come to be called punk rock, in the somewhat unlikely, somewhat necessary place of Cleveland, Ohio. Bands like Pere Ubu, the Electric Eels, Rocket From the Tombs, the Dead Boys, Devo, and the Pagans all intermingled in this psychosphere; Laughner touched them all. In 1977 at the age of 24 he became punk rock’s first casualty. While his short life ended more than a half a century ago, his legacy continues to resonate. Henry Rollins and Guns N’ Roses have covered his songs, while Wilco and the Mountain Goats drop references to him in their lyrics.

Underground comix stalwart Aaron Lange makes his much-anticipated graphic novel debut with this deeply researched biography. Through extensive interviews with the people who were there, Ain’t It Fun charts the cultural, environmental, and societal factors that shaped both Laughner and the Midwestern proto-punk subculture he championed.

Jackson went back to LA, and Lucy had to admit that she was beginning to miss him. She’d been spending this week, mostly by herself. Per Angela and Nyla’s request, they wanted to cool down public appearances, not wanting to do too much. So Lucy had hardly seen Tim since the impromptu photoshoot with Jackson.

In his absence, she went to rehearsal, did some yoga, and for the first time since she lived in Los Angeles, she added a photo to her house. Jackson had sent her a very rough photo of her and Tim laugh mid shot. She couldn’t help but put it up, it was a good memory.

He had breakfast delivered this morning and told her to be ready by five for Aaron’s party. Aaron Thorsen was a well-known socialite and a friend of Tim. Lucy was excited, she never really went to big star-studded parties, so she was excited to see what the fuss was about.

In a 1990 interview, Elvis' Wild In the Country co-star Millie Perkins recalled how embarrassing the musical scene was for both her and Elvis.

“I remember doing this one scene; we were sitting in a truck, and we were supposed to be driving home from a dance or going to a dance, and in the script he was supposed to break into song, turn on the radio and start singing. And to me it was like, ‘Yuck.’ I was very young, and I thought, ‘My sisters are going to tease me, this is so embarrassing and tasteless.’ You see, I was a snob, too. But — and this was the nicest thing — while we were rehearsing, finally the director walked away, and Elvis looks at me and says, ‘God, this is so embarrassing. Nobody would ever do this in real life. Why are they making me do this?’ So there we were, both of us having to do something and we just wanted to vomit.”
