The World Food Summit of 1996 approached food security through the principles of ensuring there is enough safe and nutritious food that can be accessed daily to meet healthy dietary needs and food preferences. By definition, this is a desirable and worthy goal. However, in the years since, food security has developed into a paradigm which does not question the underlying power dynamics and the reproduction of material conditions that make food insecurity a permanent feature of the global order. At its core, the food security paradigm deals only with access to food, without challenging the political and economic structures that determine and control access, as well as distribution. By failing to address the root causes of hunger and famine, the food security paradigm makes it impossible to end hunger globally. Of course, many people worldwide possess food security, but this is restricted to increasingly limited geographic pockets. In terms of the people localised in one area, food vulnerability is influenced and determined by class, race, gender and, of course, citizenship status. Globally, “underdevelopment” and “de-development” lead to widespread food insecurity across areas. Another problem with the food security paradigm is that it is easily co-opted to generate partial answers that pose no threat to the corporate food system, or worse, that even open up new profit opportunities. Accelerated by other crises, the food security paradigm becomes ever more dependent on aid, be it through direct food delivery, cash transfers or small development projects that cannot compete with the food giants and their price-setting powers. In practice, a “science of food security” emerges, one which takes as its focus calories and the output that is compatible with precision agriculture having the aim to increase crop yields and to assist management decisions using high technology sensor and analysis tools. This model tends to be reliant on “Green Revolution” technologies that rely on chemical fertilisers and pesticides and that are tied to colonial projects and corporations, in order to optimise resources in aid response and/or development projects. In this rationale, food insecurity can be addressed by reaching optimum yields of certain crops that should meet the demand for fats, fibres and protein. All of this is carefully managed and data-driven. Precision farming is advocated by the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) with the objective of optimising, “agricultural value chains […] critical in advancing food and nutrition sufficiency without increasing the size of land under cultivation.” The framing of food that reduces it only to “optimal input” relegates vital elements of food production and the culture of eating, like territory ownership, taste, heritage, care, well-being and connection as secondary. This reductionist approach has, though, proved useful to corporate agriculture, since it reinforces the case for genetically modified crops (GMOs), more efficient fertilisers, and the standardisation of food production for market purposes. Advocates of plant breeding technologies (including GMOs and hybrid seeds) argue that government overregulation is an obstacle to achieving food security. Overregulation, as the argument goes, denies populations the opportunity to grow crops that have increased nutrient use efficiency and are more resilient to climate shocks.

The paradigm of food security is about optimising productivity. It’s true that productivity matters – after all, feeding the world requires enormous quantities of food. But if productivity is approached solely as a technological problem, it reinforces the tendency to fragment the quantitative and qualitative aspects of food production and consumption. On the quantitative side, production for food security is viewed as a challenge of multiplication. Whereas division, that is, distribution of food, is left to logistical planning. This ignores what Raj Patel identified in his influential 2007 book Stuffed and Starved, as the bottleneck of power that concentrates international food distribution among a small set of corporations. This bottleneck excludes the poor and small-scale food producers from decision-making. It also normalises worrying tendencies, such as an overreliance on industrial animal exploitation as a protein source, which has direct health implications, as well as longer term consequences like the proliferation of new viruses, greenhouse gas emissions and inefficient use of water and soil.

Welcome to the business side of damnation. In the Abyssal Realm, commerce is not driven by logic, fairness, or shared prosperity. It is an extension of sin itself. Every deal, contract, and transaction serves a greater ideological purpose rooted in the ruling vice of its kingdom.
This article offers a glimpse into how trade, industry, currency, and smuggling operate in a world where value is measured not in gold or utility, but in indulgence, manipulation, and power. From soul-bound contracts to vice-fueled economies, the Abyssal marketplace is as treacherous as it is profitable. Here's what it means to do business in Hell.
In the Abyssal Realm, commerce is not built on trust, productivity, or mutual benefit, but on the ideological imperatives of sin. Each kingdom molds its economic system into a reflection of its ruling vice: whether it’s Pride’s prophetic monopolies, Greed’s enchantment-fueled cartels, or Lust’s transactional emotional economies. Traditional business structures like unions, corporations, or neutral markets are replaced by supernatural contracts, social manipulation, and brutal hierarchy. Trade, when it occurs, is laced with vice, and business itself becomes a weapon in the never-ending war for power and dominance.
Cross-crafting, working outside one’s sin-aligned trade, is not explicitly forbidden by law, but cultural and political pressures make it dangerous. Guilds, overlords, and entrenched social structures discourage versatility, especially when diversification might threaten power dynamics. To expand into another kingdom’s trade is an act of either bold rebellion or suicidal ambition, often requiring demonic contracts, betrayal, or manipulation. The few who succeed reshape their status entirely, but most are absorbed, punished, or erased. Thus, innovation comes at a high price in a world that values hierarchy over progress.
Trade itself scales with the population and political structure of each region. In rural towns, simple bartering of raw goods or emotion-charged services is common, while mid-sized regions develop trade patterns that mirror their sin’s specific indulgences. Cities, by contrast, become immense engines of vice-fueled industrialism. These urban markets rely on soul contracts, living relics, high-risk enchantment, and emotionally addictive services, transforming desire into a controlled economy. Trade is more than survival. It is domination, spreading sin like a contagion from one consumer to the next.
Coinage reflects this metaphysical landscape. A semi-standardized currency system exists, the Soulmark coin, with five base denominations (Ashling to Crown), but each kingdom molds the system to fit its vice. Greed’s guilds mint enchanted coins, often cursed or counterfeit. Pride’s Fate-forged coins are symbolic, precise, and nearly impossible to reproduce. Lust’s coins appeal to the senses: smelling, glowing, or pulsing with temptation. This appeal makes them easily forged but deeply desired. In contrast, Wrath uses molten brick-like coins earned through conquest. Envy, Gluttony, and Sloth have inconsistent systems, with value often tied to emotion, intimidation, or indifference. Currency here is not neutral. It tempts, corrupts, and binds.
Industry in the Abyssal Realm is locked in secrecy and power. Trade secrets are hoarded by elites and protected through magical contracts or blood oaths. Techniques for forging artifacts, harvesting emotion, or shaping fate are passed down only to those deemed worthy or cunning enough to steal them. Innovation, when it occurs, arises through sabotage or ambition, not mentorship or collaboration. Dominance over a craft equates to control over a social tier, making secrecy the truest form of capital. This culture of isolation ensures that power remains consolidated, and knowledge is weaponized.
Apprenticeship and trade access vary wildly between kingdoms. Pride enforces strict caste-based hierarchies, while Greed’s systems are transactional and frequently exploitative. Wrath demands combat, Lust requires emotional manipulation, and Envy favors psychological sabotage. Sloth, unsurprisingly, has little structure at all. There is no universal credential: only results and loyalty matter. To succeed in your trade is to survive the sin of your realm, and in most cases, to weaponize it against others.
Every kingdom specializes in distinct magical goods. Pride crafts fate-bound garments and prophecy tools. Greed excels in illusionary wealth, cursed ledgers, and binding contracts. Wrath forges soul-bound weapons and volatile armor, while Lust produces enchantments, perfumes, and seductive relics. Sloth exports apathy-inducing items, Gluttony creates addictive consumables, and Envy traffics in cursed mirrors, dream-warping artifacts, and deceptive adornments. These products do more than serve function. They spread sin itself through metaphysical consumption.
Regulation exists, but it is never just or consistent. Laws reflect the will of each ruling sin, not fairness or protection. Antitrust rules exist only to ensure rivalry thrives. Pollution laws are selectively enforced for aesthetic reasons. Measurement and pricing standards are so unstable that magical recalibrations are often required just to weigh or value goods. In this realm, the law serves to reinforce hierarchy and not justice. Trade between kingdoms is dangerous and unpredictable, shaped more by manipulation than diplomacy.
New industries continue to emerge, reflecting a shift from raw indulgence to calculated exploitation. Drudes in Envy have transformed illusions into consumable experiences. Greed’s soul-essence refining process is the new standard for magical power. Lust’s former emphasis on physical pleasure is being replaced with psychic extraction. Even Sloth’s Cambions are now capitalizing on narcotic dreamscapes. These evolutions signal a turning point in the Abyssal economy: sin is no longer just lived. It is packaged, sold, and franchised.
Recordkeeping is the domain of Pride’s Demons of Fate, who etch infernal transactions into incorruptible memory glyphs. A formal merchant class exists in nearly every kingdom, particularly within Greed, Lust, Gluttony, and Pride. However, these merchants are rarely independent. They’re bound to powerful factions, secret cabals, and political alliances. Trading groups like the Whisper Cartel or the Ash Consortium wield immense influence but are rife with betrayal and shifting loyalties. Trade is a performance of dominance, and diplomacy is often cover for sabotage.
Larger transnational organizations shape the broader economy of the Abyss. The Concord of Barter, led jointly by Greed and Pride, maintains infernal trade routes and arbitrates disputes in neutral Exchange Thrones: markets protected by sacred pacts and monitored by Ledgerkeepers. These groups maintain stability not through goodwill, but through fear, favor, and magical enforcement. Even the darkest pacts can be honored in these spaces. For the right price, of course.
Ultimately, the Abyssal economy defies earthly logic. There is no standardized system of value. Each kingdom trades in the currency of its vice. Greed in false riches, Lust in desire, Pride in perception, Wrath in strength, Envy in stolen beauty, Gluttony in overconsumption, and Sloth in passive manipulation. Power is the true coin of the realm, and business is its sharpest tool. Need is irrelevant. Want is everything.
Even at the street level, markets reflect this chaos. Small villages barter in cursed materials and region-specific enchantments. Towns use intimidation or seduction to facilitate mid-level trade. Cities operate on massive scales, auctioning emotions, souls, or magical contracts under dangerously unstable conditions. Transportation is a mixture of coercion, teleportation, and suffering. Trade routes shift constantly. These are often bent by sin, war, or whim. What’s stable today may be an ash road tomorrow.
Each sin-dominated kingdom is both economically specialized and dangerously dependent. Gluttony leads in production and indulgence. Lust controls the flow of emotional power. Greed oversees mining, manufacture, and scale. Pride dominates infrastructure and elite services, but relies on imports. Envy siphons energy from others, and Sloth sells stagnation as an export. These dependencies form fragile networks where disruption leads to chaos: triggering hoarding, warfare, or collapse.
And through it all, smuggling thrives. From Greed’s enchantments and Lust’s soul-drugs to Wrath’s black-market weaponry and Envy’s illusionary poisons, contraband is the lifeblood between borders. Sloth imports magical stimulants it cannot produce, and Gluttony hungers for forbidden delights. Whether by shadow paths, bribed gatekeepers, or infernal teleportation, goods flow outside of law and order. In a realm built on sin, every ban only increases desire and every border only invites corruption.

“The future is already here,” Cyberpunk pioneer William Gibson once said; ��it’s just not very evenly distributed.” Over the intervening decades, many people have repurposed that quote to suit their needs. Today, in that tradition, we might refine it thus: War is already here—it’s just not very evenly distributed.
Never again will the battlefield be just state versus state; it hasn’t been for some time. Nor are we seeing simple conflicts that pit a state versus a unitary insurgent that aspires to statehood. Today’s wars feature belligerents of all shapes and sizes: states (allied and non-allied), religious zealots (with or without a state), local and expatriate insurgents, loyalists to former or failing or neighboring regimes, individuals with a political mission or personal agenda, and agents of chaos who benefit from the instability of war itself. Anyone or any group of any size can go to war.
The increased accessibility of the technology of disruption and war[1] means the barrier to entry is getting lower all the time. The structure of future wars will sometimes feel familiar, as men with guns murder children and bombs level entire neighborhoods—but it will take new forms, too. Combatants will manipulate markets and devalue currencies. Websites will be subject to DDoS attacks and disabling—both by adversaries and by ruling governments. Infrastructure and services like hospitals, banks, transit systems, and HVAC systems will all be vulnerable to attacks and interruptions.
In this chaotic world, in which new and increasing threats ceaselessly menace our freedom, technology has become an essential battlefield. Here at the CrimethInc. technology desk, we will intervene in the discourse and distribution of technological know-how in hopes of enabling readers like you to defend and expand your autonomy. Let’s take a glance at the terrain.
Privacy
The NSA listens to, reads, and records everything that happens on the internet.
Amazon, Google, and Apple are always listening[2] and sending some amount[3] of what they hear back to their corporate data centers[4]. Cops want that data. Uber, Lyft, Waze, Tesla, Apple, Google, and Facebook know your whereabouts and your movements all of the time. Employees spy on users.
Police[5] want access to the contents of your phone, computer, and social media accounts—whether you’re a suspected criminal, a dissident on a watch list, or an ex-wife.
The business model of most tech companies is surveillance capitalism. Companies learn everything possible about you when you use their free app or website, then sell your data to governments, police, and advertisers. There’s even a company named Palantir, after the crystal ball in The Lord of the Rings that the wizard Saruman used to gaze upon Mordor—through which Mordor gazed into Saruman and corrupted him.[6] Nietzsche’s famous quote, “When you look long into an abyss, the abyss also looks into you,” now sounds like a double transcription error: surely he didn’t mean abyss, but app.
Security
Self-replicating malware spreads across Internet of Things (IoT) devices like “smart” light bulbs and nanny cams, conscripting them into massive botnets. The people who remotely control the malware then use these light bulbs and security cameras to launch debilitating DDoS[7] attacks against DNS providers, reporters, and entire countries.
Hackers use ransomware to hold colleges, hospitals, and transit systems hostage. Everything leaks, from nude photos on celebrities’ phones to the emails of US political parties.
Capital
Eight billionaires combined own as much wealth as the poorest 50% of the world’s population. Four of those eight billionaires are tech company founders.[8] Recently, the President of the United States gathered a group of executives to increase collaboration between the tech industry and the government.[9]
The tech industry in general, and the Silicon Valley in particular, has a disproportionately large cultural influence. The tech industry is fundamentally tied to liberalism and therefore to capitalism. Even the most left-leaning technologists aren’t interested in addressing the drawbacks of the social order that has concentrated so much power in their hands.[10]
War
Nation states are already engaging in cyber warfare. Someone somewhere[11] has been learning how to take down the internet.
Tech companies are best positioned to create a registry of Muslims and other targeted groups. Even if George W. Bush and Barack Obama hadn’t already created such lists and deported millions of people, if Donald Trump (or any president) wanted to create a registry for roundups and deportations, all he’d have to do is go to Facebook. Facebook knows everything about you.
The Obama administration built the largest surveillance infrastructure ever—Donald Trump’s administration just inherited it. Liberal democracies and fascist autocracies share the same love affair with surveillance. As liberalism collapses, the rise of autocracy coincides with the greatest technical capacity for spying in history, with the least cost or effort. It’s a perfect storm.
This brief overview doesn’t even mention artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), robots, the venture capital system, or tech billionaires who think they can live forever with transfusions of the blood of young people.
Here at the tech desk, we’ll examine technology and its effects from an anarchist perspective. We’ll publish accessible guides and overviews on topics like encryption, operational security, and how to strengthen your defenses for everyday life and street battles. We’ll zoom out to explore the relation between technology, the state, and capitalism—and a whole lot more. Stay tuned.

📖Self-Publishing Guide for Teens!📖

Why should you self publish? Self-publishing is an accessible, faster, and easier way to publish, that allows you to have higher royalties and more control over content. However, there are some downsides: indie book are sometimes perceived as questionable quality, as they are not stamped as adequate by a publishing firm, and advertising can be more of an endeavor. But these are not tall mountains to cross! Here are some tips to maximize your success and a simplified timeline of self-publishing!
1. Writing
The first step is obviously to write! Choose a genre, age group, and target audience you think your book will appeal to (this will play a role in marketing). Remember, the reading age group of your book depends on both content and reading level. If you are targeting juvenile category, keep in mind that younger children may have difficulty understanding more complex words and plots, but that young adults or adults may not be as interested in certain story concepts and topics. To be successful, your book does have to fit within the realm of the book industry. My tip is trying to organize it in a section following a library shelving system.
To avoid the quality crisis of indie books, it’s also so important to ensure your novel is the best quality possible. Several qualities that stir me away from some indie novels are ‘green’ undeveloped writing styles, a lack of flow, inconsistant or poorly-written plots, and trope-y charcters without much depth. It’s so incredibly important to properly plot your novel, create distinguishable, well-rounded characters, a strong voice, and use sentence variability. You might not be ready yet and that’s okay!—there is always room for improvement even in the best writers and you just may need more time to develop your own voice and style. Additionally, please don’t revolve your stories around tropes or fall into the modern pet-peeve of ‘all smut and no plot’ books. A story should have something significant to tell and a theme to show its reader!!! To ensure the best quality, your story should be getting peer reviewed or receiving feedback from others in between drafts. This way, others can point out plot deficiencies and comment on word choice or other structures improvements. When you intend to publish a book, it is not just for you! Your story must fit the standards of others too. Take as much as time as you need but try to set a timeline! This is the most important part of the entire process!
While writing, you also want to keep in mind how long your future book will actually be. Depending on the intended physical size of your book and font size, there are many online resources that can estimate your page count using your word count. Luckily, as indie authors, no one can limit your word count. Normally, debuting* traditionally published authors have a capped word count, equating to a maximum of 300 pages or so (this depends on genre) because publishers want to save money if a book isn’t successful. Even with this self-publishing freedom, your book should ideally be around or over 50k words (200 pages) and mindful with its length. A debuting novel with 500-1,000 pages may be unreasonably long and you should consider if that many words are really necessary— sometimes we tend to use too many words than we really need. Is a plot dragged on for too long? Is there a subplot that doesn’t contribute? Is a sequel a better option? If your book is a bit on the shorter side, a slightly-sly tip is to increase the font size and lower the book dimensions (shhhh). There are plenty of famous books on the shorter side but a book may look more aesthetically pleasing or comparable to others if it has an adequate thickness.
The excitement of publishing your normal may encourage you to speed up and diminish the quality of your writing. Try to motivate yourself to have the best quality possible!
2. Editing & Getting an Editor
Once you have a final draft, it’s time for final editing. I’ve noticed that many indie authors, especially younger ones, tend to skip out getting a professional editor, because it is so incredibly costly (some of the best services cost at least $1,000 for 50k words!!). But no matter how confident you are in the quality of your writing, you aren’t above getting an editor and it’s really a game changer for your novel. Editing polishes your work and saves you the embarrassment of having misspelled words and incorrect grammar in your first edition. It builds your credibility as an author! Obviously paying out-of-pocket $1k is a bit ridiculous, and there are cheaper alternatives. Newer editors will charge much cheaper, such as $100 to edit 50k, which in my opinion, is a much more reasonable option. Some advice is searching up writing groups on social media or scouting out editor websites across the internet. It’s important to make sure you don’t get scammed and that you are satisfied with the quality of the editing you receive! Make sure whoever you select as your editor has the proper qualifications and a website with a portfolio. Before committing, you should ask them to do a sample edit of a small section of your writing. Good luck! If you don’t want to spend any money at all, at least ask someone with an English degree or somewhat qualified to look over your writing, such as a teacher, grammar-savvy parent, or school writing lab helper. I personally advise against using Grammarly, Spell Check, AI, or other online programs as your sole editor. While these tools are valuable, they are not always accurate, don’t always understand the context of your writing, and cannot provide you with a full-depth, comprehensive editing service such as a human could. My Grammarly always suggests removing purposeful repetition and doesn’t understand the flow of my writing at all!
Before you dive isn’t the realm of finding editing services, it’s also important you know the different kinds! Developmental editing focuses on the big picture of the story and plot; Line editing focuses on word choice, pacing, and flow; Copy editing focuses on grammar. Here is a more comprehensive summary of all the services available by an editor: link. The type of editing you should seek depends on the needs of your story. If you have received useful, constructive feedback in between drafts from other friendly writers and feel confident in your final draft, you may not need any or much developmental or line editing. You may be better off simply asking for more feedback rather than spending money on an editor. I am personally going to pursue a professional editor for copy editing or at least seek out someone with the qualifications because perfect grammar is essential for the quality of your book. Lastly, invest in a few beta reader, such as friends and family, to read your entire book before it’s publishing-ready.
3. Book Covers
People do judge books by their covers (I’m guilty) so it’s important to have approachable, well-designed cover art. I personally find covers that use pictures of actual people, plain designs, and a lack of balance a bit of distasteful and tend to skip over them when I’m looking at a bookshelf— I dont even read the synopses. Rather, more artistic, beautiful, and colorful books catch my eye. On that topic, I don’t think I’ve ever bought an ugly-looking book. Obviously, many readers are less picky but, nevertheless, it is still important to have a good cover as it can make your book stand out and increase sales. Firstly, a cover should reflect the atmosphere of your story and its elements. It should represent in it in its best glory! What do you want to be physically highlighted? A darker-themed book should be a darker color and have a frigid, sharp design; while, a more light-hearted book should have a casual, maybe cartoony, colorful design. Nothing angers me more than being deceived by a book cover!! A good rule of thumb is looking at book covers in your genre and searching for inspiration. I personally made a mood board for my book cover and pulled different elements from different books until I found a style and certain elements I wanted to retain. The next step, of course, is making or finding someone else to make your cover art. I am more leaning towards commissioning a book cover but I am not opposed to drawing my own. Drawing your own cover is a fantastic way to save money as long as you are skilled enough to design it just in the way you imagined. As an artist, I’m prone to thinking I made my best drawing yet and then, looking at it months later and realizing it’s unproportional or has some fatal flaw. I’m a little too cautious to allow that to happen with my own book. Instead of drawing, you can also use online editing tools to merge images and make digital designs. However, be wary of copyright on programs like Canva and any stock photos you may use. If you are seeking to commission a cover, my favorite way is to scout artists on social media, especially Instagram and Twitter. I’ve found many beautiful artists that offer commissions in styles I like! The one I’m planning to use and the one regarded as the best platform is Kindle Direct Publishing. KDP is completely free, grants you 60-70% of royalties, and immediately launches your book on Amazon. *If you are under 18, you will need an adult to create you account for you because it requires tax information to publish. You will be able to fill out a product detail page and have the liberty of selecting an age group, genre, key search words, etc. It’s important to note that when publishing an authentic book, authors do purchase or receive ISBN and Library of Congress numbers to allow their books to be categorized into library systems and be formally identified as a commercially-sold book. Kindle does provide you with a free ISBN code but with some strings attached, such as only being able to use it commercially on their platform so, you can’t legally sell you book anywhere else if you use their provided ISBN. Make sure to be wary and fully understand terms & conditions! On the next following steps of self-publishing, KPD will allow you to upload your cover and begin the formatting process. There are many tutorial videos and instructions to properly format your book within the program, and you can even find outside professionals , that are familiar with KPD, to format your book for you for around $150. To make your book as professional-looking as possible, analyze the format of other published books and pay attention to what’s at the beginning and the end, such as a copyright page, dedication, author’s note or acknowledgment, and an author bio. Finally, publishing is simple with just a button! But before that, you should order a book proof (pre-published verison of your book) to ensure everything is just as it should be!
5. Marketing
The most difficult part for self-published authors is marketing, compared to traditional authors whose publishing companies advertise it themselves. Some ideas for marketing, that I’ve seen indie authors do are:
Create author social media accounts & advertise their book through posts & videos
Donate your book to local libraries (To do this, fill out a form & it will be accessible and at the disposal of library go-ers. Someone might check it out and appreciate it!)
Attend local author events & get involved with other indie authors (Libraries tend to host events that promote local authors, displaying their books & allowing them to give speeches. Joining indie author groups can also give you access to more event opportunities!)
Promote your book in your local newspaper (A peer of mine who self-published a book pitched the publication to a newspaper and was interviewed for a front-page article!)
Add your book to Goodreads & other book platforms (With the Goodreads Author Program, you can add your book to the collection of titles on the database & open it to readers who may be interested!)
Remember that no author got famous overnight and that advertising is a process! Whether or not you become as successful as Dr.Suess or Oscar Wilde, you are still a worthy author and your book is as wonderful as any other!

Students strive for “Balance!” in a lively product showcase


On an otherwise dark and rainy Monday night, attendees packed Kresge Auditorium for a lively and colorful celebration of student product designs, as part of the final presentations for MIT’s popular class 2.009 (Product Engineering Processes).
With “Balance!” as its theme, the vibrant show attracted hundreds of attendees along with thousands more who tuned in online to see students pitch their products.
The presentations were the culmination of a semester’s worth of work in which six student teams were challenged to design, build, and draft a business plan for a product, in a process meant to emulate what engineers experience as part of a design team at a product development firm.
“This semester, we pushed the six teams to step outside of their comfort zones and find equilibrium between creativity and technical rigor, all as they embarked on a product engineering process journey,” said 2.009 lecturer Josh Wiesman.
Trying to find a balance
The course, known on campus as “two-double-oh-nine,” marks a colorful end to the fall semester on campus. Each team, named after a different color, was given mentors, access to makerspaces, and a budget of $7,500 to turn their ideas into working products. In the process, they learned about creativity, product design, and teamwork.
Various on-stage demonstrations and videos alluded to this year’s theme, from balance beam walks to scooter and skateboard rides.
“Balance is a word that can be used to describe stability, steadiness, symmetry, even fairness or impartiality,” said Professor Peko Hosoi, who co-instructed the class with Wiesman this semester. “Balance is something we all strive for, but we rarely stop to reflect on. Tonight, we invite you to reflect on balance and to celebrate the energy and creativity of each student and team.”
Safety first
The student products spanned industries and sectors. The Red Team developed a respirator for wildland firefighters, who work to prevent and control forest fires by building “fire lines.” Over the course of long days in challenging terrain, these firefighters use hand tools and chainsaws to create fire barriers by digging trenches, clearing vegetation, and other work based on soil and weather conditions. The team’s respirator is designed to comfortably rest on a user’s face and includes a battery-powered air filter the size of a large water bottle that can fit inside a backpack.
The mask includes a filter and a valve for exhalations, with a hose that connects to the blower unit. Team members said their system provides effective respiratory protection against airborne particles and organic vapors as users’ work. Each unit costs $40 to make, and the team plans to license the product to manufacturers, who can sell directly to fire departments and governments.
The Purple Team presented Contact, a crash-detection system designed to enhance safety for young bicycle riders. The device combines hardware and smart algorithms to detect accidents and alert parents or guardians. The system includes features like a head-sensing algorithm to minimize false alerts, plus a crash-detection algorithm that uses acceleration data to calculate injury severity. The compact device is splashproof and dustproof, includes Wi-Fi/LTE connectivity, and can run for a week on a single charge. With a retail price of $75 based on initial production of 5,000 units, the team plans to market the product to schools and outdoor youth groups, aiming to give young riders more independence while keeping them safe.
On ergonomics and rehabilitation
The Yellow Team presented an innovative device for knee rehabilitation. Their prototype is an adjustable, wearable device that monitors patients’ seated exercises in real-time. The data is processed by a mobile app and shared with the patient’s physical therapist, enabling tailored feedback and adjustments. The app also encourages patients to exercise each day, tracks range of motion, and gives therapists a quick overview of each patient’s progress. The product aims to improve recovery outcomes for postsurgery patients or those undergoing rehabilitation for knee-related injuries.
The Blue Team, meanwhile, presented Band-It, an ergonomic tool designed to address the issue of wrist pain among lobstermen. With their research showing that among the 20,000 lobstermen in North America, 1 in 3 suffer from wrist pain, the team developed a durable and simple-to-use banding tool. The product would retail for $50, with a manufacturing cost of $10.50, and includes a licensing model with 10 percent royalties plus a $5,000 base licensing fee. The team emphasized three key features: ergonomic design, simplicity, and durability.
Underwater solutions
Some products were designed for the sea. The Pink Team presented MARLIN (Marine Augmented Reality Lens Imaging Network), a system designed to help divers see more clearly underwater. The device integrates into diving masks and features a video projection system that improves visibility in murky or cloudy water conditions. The system creates a 3D-like view that helps divers better judge distances and depth, while also processing and improving the video feed in real-time to make it easier to see in poor conditions. The team included a hinged design that allows the system to be easily removed from the mask when needed.
The Green Team presented Neptune, an underwater communication device designed for beginner scuba divers. The system features six preprogrammed messages, including essential diving communications like “Ascend,” “Marine Life,” “Look at Me,” “Something’s Off,” “Air,” and “SOS.” The compact device has a range of 20 meters underwater, can operate at depths of up to 50 meters, and runs for six hours on a battery charge. Built with custom electronics to ensure clear and reliable communications underwater, Neptune is housed in a waterproof enclosure with an intuitive button interface. The communications systems will be sold to dive shops in packs of two for $800. The team plans to have dive shops rent the devices for $15 a dive.
“Product engineers of the future”
Throughout the night, spectators in Kresge cheered and waved colorful pompoms as teams demonstrated their prototypes and shared business plans. Teams pitched their products with videos, stories, and elaborate props.
In closing, Wiesman and Hosoi thanked the many people behind the scenes, from lab instructors and teaching assistants to those working to produce the night’s show. They also commended the students for embracing the rigorous and often chaotic coursework, all while striving for balance.
“This all started a mere 13 weeks ago with ideation, talking to people from all walks of life to understand their challenges and uncover problems and opportunities,” Hosoi said. “The class’s six phases of product design ultimately turned our students into product engineers of the future.”
