Sorry if you've already answered this before but I'm new to the fandom and I found your account through your web-comic and I was wondering what is it about Gavin that you like so much? Why is he one of your favourite characters in dbh? (I've noticed that he isn't much of a fan-favourite in this fandom 😔)

This'll be a long post, but you asked (...and I'll happily answer!) I'll add some descriptions for context. At the top of my head, I can think of 21 reasons why I like his canon equivalent.

1. He's charismatic

Gav gives off an energy that makes it easy to hang onto his every word. I can quote all his lines by heart and I like listening to Neil Newbon (in this specific role) talk. I remember some of Kamski's lines as well -- also mo-capped/voice acted by Newbon -- but Kamski doesn't have nearly as much charisma as Gav does.

2. He's expressive

Ppl who 'talk with their hands' are more charismatic. Gav is all over the place in the break room if you stick around. Hand gestures capture people's attention as they emphasize what is being said.

3. He doesn't think androids are alive (...so in his eyes, the way he treats them isn't wrong)

"Could always try roughin' it up a little. After all... it's not human." - Gavin Reed, The Interrogation

That means he wouldn't rough up a human suspect. This alone justifies his unpleasant attitude towards androids. Hank -- who treated Connor way worse than Gav ever did -- changed his mind. Nothing says Gav can't do the same.

If Alexa suddenly said she was alive, the vast majority wouldn't take it seriously (if any at all.)

4. He's sarcastic

"Congratulations on last night, very impressive." - Gavin Reed, Waiting For Hank...

5. He has dark humor

6. He looks down on people that pay for s*x

Quote above. You don't call someone a "pervert" if you agree with their actions. The Eden Club, in particular, is immoral AF... bc those androids don't have a choice. Gav doesn't care about them being androids, but he still looks down on the guy who paid money to get laid, and I applaud Gav for that. Especially when said guy also had a wife and kids.

7. He has valid concerns about androids taking jobs

Anyone who says differently is either in denial, uninformed, or never had a job they were scared to get fired from. There's already been an uproar about ChatGPT and that's nothing compared to how advanced Detroit: Become Human androids are. The unemployment rate in this game is 37% -- higher than it was during the Great Depression and C*VID -- and androids are the main cause.

I've seen a lot of ppl ask this question:

Q: Why not just buy an android and have them do your job for you, then? You get the money anyway bc it's your android!

A: Bc, believe it or not, the vast majority of men want to work. This is a strange concept to grasp for a lot of ppl. I admire Gav for being one of those men who wants to do it themselves. Letting someone else do your job is taking the easy way out.

8. He's a hard worker

Gallery: "...Ruthlessly ambitious, Reed will do anything to advance his career, even if it means treading on other peoples’ toes."

9. He's ambitious

See the quote above.

10. He doesn't sleep well

This isn't just a headcanon. He has literal bags under his eyes. Just knowing he doesn't sleep well already has me asking, "why?" It's interesting.

11. He puts his feet on the table

After Connor interacts with him in the break room, Gav will go to his desk and do this. I'll go into detail about why this contributes to my liking his character in the very last point.

12. He calls Hank out on his alcoholism

As much as most of us love Hank, he's not in a good space mentally. Showing up drunk/hungover to work should not be tolerated. It not only puts coworkers, but also civilians, at risk. Hank should be in therapy instead of working at the DPD until he gets his life sorted out.

13. He calls Fowler out for giving Hank special treatment

"You won't get away with it this time." - Gavin Reed, The Interrogation (after Hank pulls a literal gun on a human coworker AKA Gav)

So Gav has brought it up to Fowler before and is about to do it again. Ties into the point above. What Hank does -- like assaulting a literal FBI agent -- shouldn't be tolerated.

14. He's a control freak

I gravitate towards ppl and characters who take charge. Those who like being in control and know what they're doing. I'm a control freak myself, but I'd prefer to let someone else take the reins as long as I agree with their methods. I like it when ppl know what they want and act on it. Gav does both.

15. He's protective of his coworkers

I was unsure whether or not to add this as I guess it can be seen as a subjective theory and not an objective fact.

Gav only ever steps in with the gun in The Interrogation when Con uses aggressive force on Chris Miller by tearing him away from the deviant. Con did this after disobeying Gav 3 times. So yeah. Gav is justified for stepping in. Hank, on the other hand, isn't justified for pulling a gun on a human coworker. I see this scene as Gav protecting Chris from Con who is showing signs of deviancy.

16. He can't wink

Endearing.

17. He pouts a lot

Again, endearing.

18. He swears like a sneezing kitten

Same as the two points above.

19. He doesn't like Connor

I don't like Con, either. Yeah. We exist. Personality types like Con's "let's be friends" attitude and constant positivity pisses me off. Before anyone comments that the player decides Con's personality... no. Only to an extent. There are several instances where the player has no say whatsoever. Some of Con's pre-determined responses annoy me.

20. He has great fashion

Big fan of leather jackets.

21. I like him bc I'm a narcissist at times

He's essentially the male equivalent of me to the T. I'm only an asshole internally, though. We love (or hate) characters we relate to. I relate to every single point except 17 and 18 on this list.

His OOC fanon equivalent has a huge fanbase -- especially on Twitter/X and Tumblr turning him into a blushing teenage girl -- but it seems like I'm the only person who can't stand that OOC portrayal of him. That said, I adore his canon equivalent in all his asshole glory.

ok, random qsmp headcanon that i wish was true.

q!wilbur isn't a person. He's an AI advanced android designed by the federation for the process of generating funding for them as a musician. (so yes, hatsune miku)

since q!wilbur found the letter in the mailbox i can't really figure out why he'd give away any amount of money to the federation or why he wouldn't just stay in the outside world without any benefit during tour, since lovejoy is canon on qsmp. or why he'd remain this casual about it.

so my personal explanation is that he's been directly designed with this purpose in mind. he's unbothered by being on the island and the federation because it's where he was created. he doesn't stay in the outside world because that's not what he's meant to do. the federation need to treat him nice to keep paying for those expensive white quartz buildings so he doesn't feel directly threatened.

i'd also tie this in with q!jaiden and how q!wilbur says he came to the island "with his friends jaiden and slime" which would make sense for q!jaiden with project bluebird. if they were both with the federation from very early on, it'd make sense that they would be friends.

And anyone saying q!phil's his dad, i'm just gonna go with the assumption that q!wilbur really did just see q!phil on the train and said "this guy looks like my dad" and q!phil just indulged him on that because it feels like a phil thing to do (based on the line he says at 10:18 in the third stream vod)

he only really starts getting suspicious and doubtful federation is when tallulah is threatened because he's never had to feel threatened before by the federation

Wanna share some Astronova HC's because they're all I have thought about for the last 2 months 🥰

-Because it looks like almost all of Xylitol's body is mechanical, instead of a heartbeat, he's got a hum in his chest very similar to how you hear your PC whirr when in use. Astronaut falls asleep to this ALL the time. The best way to de-stress at the end of a hard day is when he holds her and she feels like for once Ms. "Icebot" doesn't need all the answers

-Their bond grew even stronger after the loss of planet xylitol. The journey to the next planet was a long one, and there was MUCH to micromanage and lead with all these refugeed cookies and robots. He starts entrusting her with a lot of tasks b/c she's already proven more than capable when it came to saving the lives of his beloved citizens. They'd spend many hours awake, fighting off sleep in his room to discuss future plans, routes, strategies, etc. A complete comfort in each others presence without even realizing it 🥰

-When Astronaut eventually realized the feelings she caught weren't totally platonic, she didn't act out on them for a while, worrying about a multitude of factors (would it be reciprocated? would it affect their teamwork? what would all the others think of an alien falling for their leader? maybe she'd never be accepted as one of them.) Meanwhile Xylitol was the dead last person to realize what he felt. Every cookie, robot, and space doughnut on the ship knew what they were seeing but he was utterly clueless for the longest time. Cue to Xyl-Q, Space Doughnut, and Xylitol Researcher all exchanging looks™️ between each other every time he talked about Astronaut a little too fondly 😏🤭

SORRY IT TOOK ME A WHILE TO ANSWER THIS, I HAD TO GATHER MY HCS FOR THIS ADORABLE SHIP.

I love them, they remind of Eve and Wall-E

Both are in love with each other, but SO AWKWARD around each other.

-Astronaut's actual name is Neopolitan (I 'm part of the idea that cookies with job names actaully have flavor names), but she liked to be called "Neo" by her friends, so she allowed him to say it too, even thought Xylitol Nova is very formal around her. but whenever he does says it, it makes her extremely flustered. She didnt know why, but she always blushes whenever he calls her "Neo."

-Astronaut tends to call Xylitol Nova "Nova" or "Xy", which makes him flustered whenever she says it. He doesnt have the cybernetic guts to tell her to stop.

Due to being born from a star, Xylitol Nova's body is constantly warm, while Astronaut being made form ice cream, is always cold. So whenever they do date, constant cuddle from both sides <3. I also headcanon Xylitol Nova's body (along with his citizens) is a mix between a cyborg and a android, his own dough a prefect of dough and extremely tough metals like tungsten and Titanium, his body tends to overheats when he gets stressed or anxious, so Astronaut hugs him to help calm down and cool off his circuits.

HEIGHT DIFFERENCE. Astronaut is only up to the middle of his chest, while Xylitol Nova is in 6 ft and up mark. He easily scoops her up whenever she needs to reach something.

Due to her engineering background, I picture she studied the body of the Xylitolian in case anyone needed a tune up. Xylitol Nova is fascinated by her skill to learn this so quickly.

I imagine all of the citizens are watching them like a telenovela, all betting from time to time on how their relationship would go.

"I saw our leader creating hard light flowers. I better he's making them or Astronaut."

"No way!! He's been working in the engine room with Xylitol Researcher Cookie for the past few days! He couldnt have had time for that!"

"10 quid says he did."

"Fine!"

Deja Q Rewatch: Qcard Analysis

I am rewatching every Q episode of TNG (which means Qpid is next! Yippee!) and I thought I’d like to write a bit about this…

First of all, MY POOR BOY IS A HUMAN AND EVEN HIS LOVE INTEREST DOESN’T BELIEVE HIM. He literally requested to be sent to the Enterprise. Why? Because Picard is “the closest thing [he] has to a friend”. I posted this in the Qcard Fic Discord server, but I have a theory that yes, Q has been attracted to Picard for some time, especially during Q Who. Bro nearly kissed JLP’s ear. But he wasn’t fully aware of it. He enjoys Jean-Luc’s company. He wants affection. Now here he is, experiencing human emotions. Along with all of that fear and anxiety of feeling pain and such, and maybe a little bit of butterflies in his stomach?? I had a theory of an off-screen moment that might have gone something like this, perhaps in the few moments it must have taken to replicate 10 chocolate sundaes, right before Guinan shows up:

Q: Data… I may have felt a different sensation in my stomach earlier, when I first was dumped here by the Continuum.

Data: I’m listening.

Q: Sort of… fluttery. I-I’m not sure. It didn’t feel like… hunger.

Data: It could be possible it was a sort of nervousness.

Q: I’ve been feeling nervousness all day. I only felt this way near Jean-Luc. Maybe even a bit while I was omnipotent.

Data: It could be possible you feel some form of romantic or sexual attraction to Captain Picard.

Q: Sex with… Jean-Luc? For a robot, you have a sense of humor!

Data: …I am an android.

Q: Whatever!

Even if that didn’t happen, Q may have figured it out himself that fluttery feeling he got around Picard was love because after Deja Q, he was flirting even more!!! “Mon capitaine” starts to stick!!! Qpid, the way he was on the couch!!! Tapestry, flowers for John-Luck Pickerd!!!

Now, I am going to discuss “Red alert” below the cut but a few other things first:

It was so hard for him to manage. My boy full of fear. Yet it’s that thing he has for Picard that keeps him forgiving him even when he’s pushed out of the way. Also, Q is not interested in “human interpersonal relationships”. In truth? As he sorts through his feelings for Picard, he’s still the only human he cares for. Riker was just for the Continuum. He could care less about Riker now that he knows for sure Riker could care less for the Continuum’s abilities. It’s all Picard. Definitely could care less about Geordi. Worf’s a Klingon, but he could care less about Microbrain as well.

And now to discuss Q’s sacrifice. Obviously he did some thinking after Data saved him. It is possible in this moment he realized he loved Picard and would do anything to protect him. So he takes the shuttlecraft. He would die for him. And he’s teased by Q2. “Selfless”. He knows the Calamarain would destroy the Enterprise to get to him, which means the death of everyone on the ship, including Jean-Luc. And of course he was growing depressed in that human form. But as Q2 said, there was a selfless aspect to this.

That selfless aspect? Q’s feelings for Picard.

Alright, on “Red alert”…

He’s naked in front of Picard. He can’t control the smirk that shows up on his face when he lands there. This is definitely Q’s more sexual emotions for JLP, and what if…

What if, he got a, yknow, a 🦴?

Just saying. He doesn’t know what happened. He might have had a guess. Why is it doing that?

And that’s all I’ll discuss that. If you made it this far, thank you for reading my thoughts on this episode and how it sets up Qpid and Tapestry, and ultimately All Good Things… Now I didn’t mention True Q, and I believe @stellarred mentioned this in one of their posts at some point, but the reason we barely got any Qcard there is because Continuum business. But wait, Hide and Q was similar in nature. Well, Riker was closer to Picard so it was different. Besides, he was more of a free-range carefree Q then, before the fear of being a human set in. Okay that’s the real end of the essay.

OOKKKKKKK i started answering this last night and it took me so long bc i have brain problems re: data and i had to go to bed before i could finish it so i saved it as a draft and tumblr deleted it so ok here we go again thine own self fucking slaps, it's like top three data eps for me if not top three tng eps. his little tights. getting his face ripped apart. getting murdered in the town square <3 wow i love that for him!!! datalore/brothers/descent 1/2 OBVIOUSLY bc anytime data and lore are on screen together i'm in a frenzy. noonian being there in brothers is an added bonus. the first 10 minutes of brothers when he's taking over the enterprise is, like... erotic... that sounds insane but it's true. i love it when androids malfunction, it's hot. any episode where data is malfunctioning or being opened up or ripped apart or plugged in to something is like... (chef kiss)

the offspring :^( clues is an underrated data classique. picard threatening him that he'll be stripped down to his wires? ummmm-

best of both worlds when he's plugged in to locutus? "processing.... processing..." LOVE IT. obsessed with that scene.

fistful of datas. actually any time data and worf get screentime together i'm psyched. especially if worf ends up having to carry him around bc he got his shit wrecked. which reminds me that the iconia episode is great in season 2, whatever it was called. i'm too lazy to look it up. contagion?

i also love any time data and riker get screen time together bc riker is obviously in love with that android. data's day is great, i love just seeing him be a weird little guy. calling geordi lunkhead. ruining o'brien's day. "i am not nervous. i AM confused." uhhhh whatever the episode is where he starts dreaming. birthright. if we're talking about data dreaming episodes, i actually prefer this one to phantasms, even though phantasms also rules. i loooove watching him and julian create a category 5 autism event on the enterprise. also data being like i had a crazy vision, please electrocute me again so i can give it another shot. and even though i hate noonian and want to smash his head with a brick, he is beautiful and i love getting to see him.

hero worship is great. as with the offspring, it's another, "wow data would be a great dad" episode.

love quality of life just in general. it's obvious that picard cares about data like all of his crewmen but they do frequently end up at odds with eachother, so this episode along with measure of a man really stand out to me bc i love seeing picard so enthusiastically being on data's side. he can't even make small talk with data on the turbolift but by god is he ready to die so data can prove some little robots are fellow sentient beings.

SPEAKING OF TURBOLIFT SMALL TALK, i know starship mine is technically a picard episode but data's parts in it are all great. love that statistically data is either the only guy who can solve a problem or is the guy directly responsible for the problem.

the episode with his mom is sweet even though in my mind it's non-canonical bc i don't believe that noonian soong is capable of um... caring about a fellow human being enough that he could convince someone to marry him (i hate noonian soong. have i mentioned that? actually i hate the entire family except the androids, they're just all terrible people).

uhh and then any episodes that feature data getting his mind hijacked and the entity who does it being like, "this body rules i'm going to beat the shit out of/choke the shit out of picard specifically". thank you... good stuff.

deja q gets 1000000 bonus points bc it is a great q episode AND a great data episode and i wish we got more of them being bfffs.

masks sucks so bad but the, "what does it feel like when one is losing his mind?" scene breaks my heart every time.

also this is not episode specific but data's fascination/love of therapy is awesome i love it i love that he wants to go to therapy every day and i'm glad that (even though picard the tv show sucks) data got his wish of daily therapy sessions with troi in season 3. good for him. GOOD FOR HIM!!!

his names Desmond O. Arkady and he’s the main protag of SE and is…tbh the only normal person out of the entire cast. he’s just a normal superpower-less kid who gets involved in world altering events on accident becuz everyone else is mean to him and likes using him cuz he craves validation and can’t say no :( unfortunately for all the ppl who like pushing him around, he’s got extremely serious, repressed anger issues (due to his dad's emotional/verbal abuse and his mom abandoning the family) and is eventually pushed beyond his breaking point which at some point involves making a nuclear bomb so. good work guys-

he’s also super fucking smart and loves everything to do with science even tho he isn’t too good at math. he excels at biology and chemistry and likes to take home dead animals to cut open and look at. he also practices necromancy- he’s a distinguished little victor frankenstein just. one who doesn’t steal dead bodies v-v he particularly likes reviving dead cats (one of which becomes a supporting character at a later point) but other than natural sciences he's pretty adept at taking things apart and putting them back together. he can look at a radio and know exactly how it works and what the components are that make it function. he also loves fun facts and will randomly drop them on people, especially morbid ones that he finds 'funny and interesting' but isnt to others :( so while he's pretty intelligent he doesnt do well socially which resulted in him being bullied VERY badly when he was younger but he tries to take everything in stride....even tho he almost drowned once becuz of it and one other time almost beat someone unconscious during one of his 'rage blackouts' (he definitely fucking cried for like 3 days straight after that even tho he doesnt rmm)

while relatively normal he’s related to like, arguably the most powerful person in the world which is something he’s super unaware of. he’s the heir to a shit ton of scientific endeavors and intended future owner of ALL ANDROIDS. but again he’s unaware of this so when “certain things” tend to happen to him or around him he just tends to brush it off and doesn’t think it concerns him. the person who he’s related to, Lupe, is struggling to get into contact with him cuz 10 years ago she astral projected so hard she caused her subconscious (i’m not explaining) to time travel so. she’s just been in a coma for a long while annnnd she very much might never wake up again so OH WELL looks like her TRILLION DOLLAR FORTUNE is just in fucking limbo for now >:/

hmm what else..very much a people pleaser, he's got this really weird inclination to freak the fuck out if he thinks people don't like him- he also ignores a lot of his feelings?? like if he feels anything intense other than happiness he's prone to crying fits and throwing up which his bodyguard francis thinks is INSANE and STUPID. despite ppl treating him like shit he's genuinely a very hopeful person and loves the world and everything that takes up space in it. like he tries to and does see the good in everything and while the events of the story kinda wear down on him he ultimately doesn't think humanity or Martiankind deserves pain and/or suffering; he persistently keeps a strong sense of justice/morality and thinks that anyone or anything is ultimately capable of good.

Movie Review | Jason X (Isaac, 2001)

I put this on hoping for some early 2000s nu metal sheen but instead got something that looked like an underbudgeted Canadian sci-fi TV show from the same era. Or the cutscenes from the Command and Conquer games but without the hammy acting. Or maybe a softcore sci-fi porno. Feels sluggish and totally halfassed, like a bunch of people who only "like" slasher movies to make fun of them. Having watched this so soon after Freddy vs. Jason, I appreciate all the more the baseline of respect with which the other movie treats the material. Also, it should be illegal to have this little nudity in one of these things. I sometimes go easy on stuff like this because I can imagine myself having watched it on the Scream Channel back in high school and then logging onto the Rotten Tomatoes forum to post "7/10 - Fun flick" or something to that effect, but I'm pretty sure I would have hated this back then too. I was not entirely undiscerning as a teenager.

Character development has rarely been a strong point for these movies, but I appreciate when the characters either feel like real people like in the first two or are at least memorable like in a few others. The ones here are simultaneously boring and annoying, and for some reason there's a knockoff Dennis Franz. I hated spending time with all of them. Except maybe the redheaded android girl, but only because she gets a scene where she dresses up like a dominatrix and machine guns Jason, which is the only time the movie achieves the bozo mode energy I was hoping to get from this. And the one kill where he freezes his victim's face is kind of cool. And I chuckled at David Cronenberg's cameo. (One of my biggest regrets is not asking him about it when I attended a Q&A with him.) Three good scenes, countless bad ones. If Howard Hawks were alive, he'd be rolling in his grave.

I finished Ginga…and Ginga S!

I wanted to look at both of these series as a package deal, partially because that’s what they are, but also because i find how they both serve as testing grounds for the New Generation Ultraman seasons in various ways.

Ginga has turned out to be one of my favorite Ultras for how unique it is. It trades the usual Tokyo skyline for a rustic environment. There’s no defense force, most villains of the week are humans that have been manipulated, and the story focuses on a group of friends reuniting at their run down school out in the sticks. It’s such an intimate little setup i can’t resist, even if it was likely a byproduct of the main thing the show is infamous for. Ginga had a low budget and you really start to feel it after a bit, and at first i was a little nervous about this. Im definitely not picky about that sort of thing but i was afraid that might color my judgment given how used i was to the standards set by 2010s Ultra seasons. And i can safely say that if you are at all apprehensive about Ginga for this reason, don’t be. The combination of the show’s amazing cast and superb direction really made the most of what they were able to do. And i wouldnt want it any other way. It may not have various tropes and iconography you associate with Ultraman, but even so it gets to the heart of what the series is all about, humans overcoming their selfishness and despair to reach their full potential and rise up and build a brighter future. Also Taro is there and you will love hi.

I assume Ginga was a success because by the time Ginga S came out it was clear Tsupro was much more willing to give them money to work with. All new sets, props, a defense force with various vehicles (part of a deal with Nissan i believe), the BEST city miniatures the series had ever seen, it’s all the stuff Ginga dreamed of having even if it didnt exactly need them. You could say S is a sort of victory lap for Ginga (no pun intended) and that’s kinda what i see it as. Because despite all of this i don’t quite like it as much as OG Ginga. It’s a perfectly solid Ultraman series, it’s just that Ginga gave me something I didn’t really know i needed. But that still makes it an 8/10 as opposed to Ginga’s 9/10, it’s not that huge of a difference and if you enjoyed Ginga you should definitely check out Ginga S to see all that it has going for it. Hikaru’s back, and while all of his friends from the first series reappear in some capacity, S gives us a whole slew of new characters to enjoy. This is the strongest thing about the show i feel, as new deuteragonist Ultraman Victory aka Sho, the UPG staff, and villainous android One Zero make for a fun circle of folks with fun dynamics. To say nothing of the fun one-off characters we get, this shit had me upset over fucking Gan Q. I think the only objective flaw with Ginga S to me is that most of the new villains aren’t all that interesting. This is remedied somewhat by a couple of things but i don’t wanna get into the details. The other thing, and this more of a personal issue, is how regrettably short it is. It’s paced perfectly for being a shorter season but i was left wanting more of all these characters and stuff! Which is funny because it’s actually longer than original Ginga. It’s like the bigger budget made me want it to stick around more while Ginga’s more modest resources kept them from overextending themselves. After that though Ultra would opt for 26 episode seasons, which i think is a perfect length. Again though this is just a personal thought, watch Ginga S and enjoy yourself!

I hope you enjoy Ginga and Ginga S as much as i have. I honestly thing Ginga is a good intro to Ultra, though some may disagree, and Orb remains my own go-to recc so take that as you will. But regardless i absolutely enjoyed my time with it and was pleasantly surprised by just how much i liked the whole thing.
