Optimizing Battery Energy Storage Systems for Renewable Energy Applications
Since renewable energy projects are now emerging worldwide it becomes essential to fine-tune the battery energy storage systems (BESS) for providing stability to the projects. The optimization of battery energy storage systems or BESS is a key strategy to maximize the benefits of renewable power.
Power and Energy Ratings
Sizing BESS power and energy in accordance to requirements – high power for frequency control, high energy for solar smoothing
When the sizes are oversized, the efficiency is slightly reduced and it is also costly, when undersized on the other hand, the functionality is greatly limited.Â

Operating Conditions
Temperature control is crucial for enhancing the performance of a battery and reducing the effects that climatic conditions may have on batteries.
Avoid contact with factors that reduce battery life, such as exposure to pollutants and other substances.
Battery ChemistryÂ
Choose battery chemistry that is appropriate for charge-discharge cycles: lithium-ion for cycling in connection with renewable energy sources
Many batteries have various guidelines for DoD, so to avoid damaging the battery, use chemistry specific DoD.
Control Systems
Install smart inverter systems and the renewable energy project management software for the automated control of the entire system.
It is recommended to set optimal SOC values and charge/ discharge rates to enhance the battery efficiency.
Regular Maintenance
Evaluate capacity, review the hardware, and check its status
Ensure that worn out parts and components are replaced as frequently as is desirable to ensure efficient functionality.
These factors include achieving the right size, designing the system, the right chemical composition, proper controls, and proper maintenance to make battery energy storage systems (BESS) offer the best stability in the renewable energy systems and offer them the value they deserve.

The Van Has Officially Declared It Spooky Season
---
I've got my parent's van for the week and it seems determined to establish my status as The Local Cryptid by terrorizing an innocent 7-11 clerk.
...I might need to back up a bit.
My mother is an eminently sensible woman who knows herself well, and when The Plauge hit, she knew she'd need some sort of mentally and physically engaging craft project to keep herself from going insane and massacring the local zoning and water management boards (even if they have it coming). So she and Dad acquired a utility van and converted it into a camper van because while they love camping, they're past the age where their joints and immune systems will tolerate sleeping on the cold ground in a nylon tent.
They did a terrific job of it and my mom taught herself woodworking and carpentry and now the van has it's own cabinets, fold-away dining table, and removable queen-sized bed with memory foam mattress. My Dad was already a computer engineer, but he learned the dark magics of automotive software and electronics to install after-market backup cameras, a media player that would take a terabyte hard drive and a solar-powered battery and outlet so they could wake up and just turn on the kettle and griddle for breakfast without having to exit the van into a cold morning on an empty stomach.
Truly, the height of Camping Luxury.
My parents are both in their mid-seventies and my primary life goal is to be at least half as cool and hale as they are when I get old.
Anyway, they take it out at least a dozen times a year and it works fabulously, but, being as I am on good terms with my parents and also finishing the process of moving house, I've been borrowing it to move large and cumbersome objects that will not fit in the back of my equally lovely but minuscule Honda hatchback.
It's a Great Van. Very easy and comfortable to drive. Stunningly good MPG for it's size. The best cruise control I've ever had in a car.
It's just also. Quirky. Mischievous, even.
---
If this van has a fault its that it bears the unfortunate affliction that all lightly used white utility vans have in that the combination of an utter lack of branding features and the large dent/scrape I accidentally put on it while trying to escape a Denny's last Thanksgiving means that this vehicle is one addition of a Badly Spray-Painted "FREE CANDY" on the side away from being the sort of vehicle you see in an edgy horror movie.
It's got the same issue that Doberman Dogs have where they look like the sort of creature that likes to snack on toddler's faces whilst actually having personalities made of marshmallow fluff. This vehicle is unnecessarily menacing and I think nothing short of an airbrushed Epic Van Wizard will correct this. People see this van pull up and lean over and squint suspiciously at me when the driver's side door opens, and then look moderately confused when, instead of Charles Manson, a small, potato-shaped creature with neon purple hair and a statistically unlikely assortment of dogs emerges.
My own two dogs, Herschel the Hanukkah Goblin/Corgi and Charleston Chew The Taco Dumpster Dog, Do Not Like The Van. Even with the bed in it, they have a tendency to slide and roll around in the back, and both WILL chew through dog saftey belts or other attempts to secure them in there.
On the other hand, my house mate's dog, an exceptionally tall standard poodle whom we lovingly call "The Creature", loves the Van because SHE wears her doggy seat-belt with only mild complaining and gets to sit up in the passenger seat like A People.
Also like A People, The Creature likes to stand and walk around on her hind legs. It doesn't hurt her and it's entirely voluntary, but every so often I will feel a hand on my arm and instead of my husband or friend, it's a canine that's taller than I am on her hind legs who wants to stare at my face with soulful, concerned eyes. The Creature's favorite thing is that she is exactly the right height for me to hold her arm in Genteel Fashion and walk around the pet food or hardware store with her like I'm a count escorting a debutante around a royal ball.
---
As it stands, I am set to inherit this vehicle whenever my Honda gives up the ghost, and I fully intend to paint an Epic Van Wizard on it when that time comes.
The other peculiarity of The Van is that while Dad did manage to successfully install all his after-market electronics, not all the electronics get along. Sometimes, they fight for Dominance. The Terabyte Music Player and the Backup Camera have a particularly contentious relationship, and turning on the music has about a 25% chance of turning on the backup camera as well, and turning on the Backup Camera is equally likely to turn on the music.
Firthermore, The Van has a favorite song.
I am not kidding that Dad filled an entire terabyte hard drive with music and the software to sort it via the radio controls, but of all the Early Boomer Dad Rock (Kingston Trio over The Eagles) and Irish Folk and Symphonies and the entire discography of Weird Al Yankovic, The Van's favorite song- The one it picks to play as victory music every time it beats the Backup Camera at their weird electronic game of rock-paper-scissors -is The Liberty Bell March by John Phillip Sousa.
You all know this song already.
...but in case you've forgotten the tune:
youtube
Yeah.
The Van's favorite song is the goddamn Monty Python's Flying Circus Theme Music.
It does not play this song at a normal volume.
Every time I turn on the Backup Camera and it manages to turn the music player on as well, The Van insists on absolutely blasting this nonsense on at the maximum volume it's physically capable of producing, which I know is loud enough to be heard from the Denver International Airport's Pickup zone when they Van decided to start playing it from the economy lot about half a mile away.
Perhaps it's The Van's way of honoring the aesthetic sensibilities and sonic enthusiasm of Mr. Sousa.
...I can't help but wonder if the purpose of an Epic Van Wizard is to control this sort of faerie-like malarkey, and channel these chaotic energies into things like Spell of Don't Break Down In Nevada or Enchantment Of Always Have Good Parking.
---
So last Friday the 13th, I get a call from my friend and housemate, at said airport.
It's roughly 11PM at night, and I have already retired for the evening. I am in the exact minimum of clothing required to be a decent housemate and not scandalize the neighbors should I happen to walk by a window. My feet are up. There is a cat in my lap and fictional British people murdering each other in highly inventive fashion on the tv. -But my friend has returned from her friend's wedding, and either American or United Airlines has managed to lose her luggage, including, among other valuable possessions, the keys to her car. ...So she cannot just drive home as originally planned.
There are, as luck would have it, her spare set of keys not eight feet from me.
Being a good and decent person, I agree to bring the spare keys to her so she may get home before daybreak and not spend a semester's worth of tuition on an uber across the greater Denver traffic jam.
Being also that she Loves Activities, and it's her mom we're going to pick up, I elect to take along The Creature.
I am primarily focused on remembering how to get to the airport and not leaving my friend's spare keys on the counter, so I throw on a pair of flip-flops, step outside, remember that it's AUTUMN and my minimal evening attire is not sufficient thermal protection, step back in, grab the first coat in the closet I lay hands on, pull it on, check that I have her keys again and leave.
The trip to the airport is largely unremarkable, save that it becomes necessary for me to put on sunglasses to drive, despite it being nearly the witching hour and almost entirely darker than the inside of a cow.
It's necessary because this blissful darkness of night is violently punctured by a startling number of cars that seem to have installed miniaturized but no less powerful lighthouse bulbs in where their headlights ought to go so the oncoming traffic and sports cars that insist on tailgating me in the slow lane alike illuminate the road and my mirrors with the kind of radiance I'd normally associate with the arrival of a Seraphim.
I arrive at the distant highly discounted airport car lot where my housemate is waiting, deeply apologetic. It's nothing. I say. Once I see that your car starts up, I'm gonna go to that 7-11 across the way that I parked in front of, get a slurpee or something and I'll see you at home.
While she is retrieving her vehicle (an equally eccentric but much more stately Subaru that is old enough to be elected to congress) I rifle through the loose change in the glove box and discover that I have exactly $6.66 in small bills and coins. The Subaru, continuing it's long voyage into vehicular immortality, immediately starts up.
Upon her return, we all remember that my friend had all her camping gear in the backseat of the car and there is no room for The Creature to ride home with her parent, so I again assure her it's nothing, and will just take The Creature into the 7-11 with me. She is trained as a service animal and needs the practice after the plague.
I wave my friend off and turn to enter the 7-11.
I promptly trip over the jutting back bumper of The Van and fall, cartoonishly, face-first onto the sidewalk.
Fortunately, I have a lot of practice falling on my face, and have learned not to throw my hands out but instead cover my face, so my unexpected self-inflicted attempted curb-stomping lightly scrapes my hairline and nothing else -my sunglasses even stay in place- and I get up and resume my quest for a slurpee.
It's well known that the airport is a lawless place, and the 7-11 across from the discounted airport parking at the stroke of midnight is no exception.
I know it's the stroke of Midnight because there's one of those Audubon society bird-call clocks that makes bird noises, and my arrival is heralded by the twittering call of a Summer Tanager. I am almost charmed enough by the unusual choice of chronological device to excuse the exorbitant Airport-adjacent mark-up of Slurpee prices. I stand at the machine for some time, trying to decide on a size for the price and guess what the fuck "Blue Lighting Blast" is supposed to taste like.
The Creature is being Very Polite but is somewhat agitated, I assume because she *just* saw her mother for the first time in three days and then she LEFT with no explanation, so The Creature is on her hind legs, staring woefully into my eyes, asking to be escorted around the 7-11. Even though that's not what she's not supposed to be doing, there's nobody else in here, so I let her hang off my arm and discuss various Slurpee Flavor options with her.
We eventually decide on an experiment in which I try a Small Blue Lightning Blast, and discover it tastes a bit like licking a nintendo cartridge but in a pleasantly satisfying way.
I go up to pay and realize something is amiss.
The Cashier is a young man staring at me with wide eyes, one had over the register and the other wrapped up in his rosary.
I look down at myself.
In my haste to reunite my friend with her spare keys and service animal, I had left the house in the following accoutrements:
Flip Flops. Not matching. It's below freezing outside. That last part is not particularly odd footwear for the weather in for Colorado, but it's an important detail for the rest of the ensemble.
Assorted scrapes, bruises, cuts and welts on my arms and legs that come with doing outdoor work and living in a house with three dogs and a fully-clawed cat that all want to be in my lap all the time. It's cold out, so vasoconstriction has pulled the blood away from my skin, a trait that served my ancestors well during the last Ice Age, but leaves me with pale skin to contrast the various wounds and I look like a corpse that fell out of the back of a pickup truck.
The black Bootyshorts with "CRYPTID" painted in bright red gothic font across my ass, that @theshitpostcalligrapher gave me for my wedding present.
A peculiar but extremely comfortable garment that straddles the line between "Lacy Camisole" and "Industrial-Strength Sports Bra" like the Ever Given straddling the Suez Canal. It is also Bright Red. with black accents.
The Jacket I had grabbed out of the closet, which is in fact, a black Velour Dinner Jacket.
The Tokyo-Ghoul inspired reusable anti-covid mask a friend made me with the set of Coyote Teeth.
My sunglasses, which are shaped like a Halloween Bat. The lenses are the wings and the body is the nose bridge. It is ALSO bright red.
A Very Large and remarkably Humanoid Poodle that I have been audibly affectionately calling "Dear Creature" who is hanging off my arm like she's my Prom Date.
The Very Large and remarkably Humanoid Poodle is ALSO dressed up in a black Dog Sweater that has white bones printed on it to look like its an X-ray jacket showing off her skeleton.
I look like I am taking my Very Fancy Werewolf Girlfriend to a particularly casual Dinner Party for Vampires, but the thing that's really selling it and probably alarming the kid the most is the fun accessory I acquired in the parking lot not five minutes earlier:
The "Small Scrape At my Hairline" is actually a painless but PROFUSELY bleeding head wound that I had somehow entirely failed to notice covering my face, neck, decolletage and magnificent cleavage with blood like a Tarantino Film Extra.
This does explain why The Creature has been delicately trying to use her bodyweight to push me down onto the floor for the last ten minutes. So I don't injure myself while we wait for the paramedics she hoped this kid called to arrive, you see.
The Creature has such a High and Naive Opinion of humanity.
I decide this social situation is already fucked, and the only way out is through, and with haste, before I start dripping on the floor.
"Hi there!" I say cheerfully, to indicate this is a visually alarming but not terribly serious situation. "Just a Small Slurpee!"
The Cashier has entered the relevant code into the register before I finish the sentence. His gaze flicks off me just long enough to look at the total, and he grips his Rosary harder.
$6.66
"Oh cool! I have exact change!" I say, taking the money out of my as-yet-unsanguined pocket without looking and slap it down on the counter. "You have a good night and be safe out there!" I wave, leaving.
I get in The Van, mortified, buckle The Creature up, and as I make to leave, I have to put it in reverse, which automatically turns on the backup Camera.
It also turns on the music player.
I make eye contact with the cashier as the dulcet tones of John Phillip Sousa boom from the van hard enough to make the windshield and the windows of the 7-11 rattle for the nine-and-a-half seconds I have to wait to be able to turn the volume back down. Not knowing what else to to, I give him a thumbs up, and leave.
Anyway, now I know what my Future Van Wizard has got to be dressed like, and what their familiar is.

My concepts for the development progress of an Iterators Puppet
-my ideas below
-Feasibility Study Â
[1]: First autonomous control module, any instruction to be given must be done manually through physical means (the keys), outputs were shown through the screen. A very primitive system, however, did its job proving the greater machine concept was achievable. While it does look like a lens above the monitor, this was a simple status gauge for benchmarking.
-Prototyping and Development Â
[2]: Now with the capability to wirelessly and audibly communicate to receive instructions and inputs. The system was no longer directly integrated into the facility, and resided on the first instance of an iterator's arm. This was considered a feat due to the complications with isolating the control module from the rest of the iterators components, while keeping processing power. A permanent connection/umbilical was needed to sustain life and function though.Â
To “talk” back, they were crafted with multidimensional projectors, the mobile arm allowing the angles and variance for this projection. Only later into development were advanced speakers installed for optimized understanding, however the extra computing power required to synthesize proper speech was found to strain the contained module, so this function had rare use in the end.
[3]: At this point there was a change in perspective in the project. What once were machines to simply compute and simulate, were now planned to be the home, caregiver, and providers. The further the project came to fruition the more religious importance was placed upon these “random gods”. From this stance not only did the puppets have to manage and control their facilities, they had to communicate with the people and priests. To represent benevolent beings who will bring their end and salvation. In this process iterators began to take a more humanoid shape, to better reflect their parents. Development was focused on compacting the puppet closer to the size of an ancient for this purpose. This stage was the first to incorporate a cloak/clothing into their design considerations, to further akin themselves in looks. The cloak would hide the iterators' engineered bodies and give a body to their silhouette.Â
[4]: As bioengineering and mechanics were rapidly progressing due to the void fluid revolution, this allowed plenty of margin for developing the outer design of the iterator puppets. This prototype was the first to incorporate limbs for the purpose of body language. This was another step in the drive to give a body to their random gods.
-Final Iterations
[5]: First generation iterators had the final redesign of puppet bodies. Far different from their first designs, they are fully humanoid. Their bodies are shaped to be organic and as full of life as they could at the time. Their center of sapience has fully settled within their body, as can be seen as their unconscious use of limbs without the direct intention for communication. This can also see how they manage their work, where many of the functions (which can be done with just an internal request) are operated through physical gestures of their limbs. Their puppet chambers also allow for full comprehensive projection, where many of their working monitors are displayed. It is seen how iterators prefer to utilize their traversal arm to transfer between the current working projection window.
These designs were hardy and nearly self-sufficient, only requiring minimal power from their umbilical to charge. (However was still limited in the terms of internal power production, for this first generation extensive batteries sufficed)
[6]: Later generation not only incorporated advanced bioengineering internally, but externally. While still a hardened shell, their body plates have been incorporated into the organics of the puppet, maintaining the protective requirements while barely leaving a trace of hinges or plates. This “soft” skin had drawbacks, such as reduced durability to the first generations, this was offset by the greatly enhanced repair speeds and capability this type of skin allowed.
Internal power generation was implemented into these late generation models. If the case arose, the Puppet could be disconnected from their umbilical and still be conscious from an undefined period of time. (However this would limit the operating capacity of the puppet when running self sufficiently) This greatly eased maintenance works, as the Puppet could still run the greater facility wirelessly while work was done on the chamber, arm or whatever as needed.

9. Lennar will build 1,500new Colorado homes with geothermal heat pumps
“The homebuilder is partnering with Dandelion Energy to install the tech, which is efficient but expensive — unless it’s built into new homes from the start. […] And by eliminating the need for new gas pipelines and reducing the peak electricity demands on the power grid, subdivisions built on this model could save a bundle on utilities as well[….]”
10. New strategy launched to protect Tanzanian biodiversity hotspot
“Conservationists have launched a 20-year-long project to protect what is arguably Tanzania’s most biologically rich landscape: the Udzungwa Mountains. The strategy places notable emphasis on communities living here, with more than half of its budget allocated to social and economic projects and managing human-wildlife conflict.”

hi!
just saw your pictures of you doing some marine biology fieldwork and i just wondered if you have any stories about the experience that you would like to share. Im in 1st year uni right now and i have no idea what im gonna specialize in other than “science!!” but i work on boats for my job right now (tallships, very cool stuff) and so marine environment work really appeals to me. If you have the time, I would love to get a picture of what the work you’re doing entails.
(What does the day-to day of marine biology research look like? What kind of stuff are you studying/information are you gathering? Whats it like? Is it awesome? feel free to answer none of these also)
thank you!!
OH, I'm jealous - it's a dream of my mine to get to work on a tallship. & I love to talk about this stuff!
In all honesty, the day-to-day changes pretty dramatically depending on what project work is available. Right now, as a student, a lot of what I'm involved in ties into coursework or research that's happening at the university! I volunteer with a couple different labs, and there's a huge variety of stuff to get in on. For example:
Last Saturday, I spent about six hours pulling otoliths and gonads out of eighty invasive roi, taape, and toau caught by local spearfishermen. Otoliths are the ear bones of fish, and similar to the rings of a tree, they have ringed annuli that can give a lot of information about the life history of the individual species. We cast these otoliths in resin, and then cut cross-sections to look at them under the microscope. The hope is that this information will help us understand when these species become reproductive, and how to control their populations.
The last several Fridays, I've been involved with an effort to collect some water quality and plankton data after a lot of heavy rain. This work was out on the boats, and we used deep and shallow drogues, YSI, light meter, secchi disk, and a couple plankton nets, moving out from the swollen rivermouth and into deeper, saltier water.

Last month, I spent a lot of time on invertebrate snorkel surveys, mostly looking for presence/absence in the nearshore. Next Tuesday, I'll be doing fish surveys in the same location. The Wednesday after I'm hopping on a wetlands restoration project & removing invasive bull grass, and a night snorkel afterwards. Next Friday is a lab day, working to process the plankton samples we've collected, and I'll be in the coral nursery afterwards. That's the really fun thing about university - there's so much different work going on, all the time!
In the summers, outside of school, that work is just as varied. I've really enjoyed having jobs that allow me to do a little bit of everything, and thus far, my supervisors have been very supportive of me in that. Here's some other projects I've gotten to work on, all within just one position:

Servicing passive monitoring systems! These are pictures of my replacing a SEABIRD logger, which has been taking a water temperature measurement every thirty seconds for the past 360 days. This helps conservation managers track heatwaves in sensitive ecosystems. We prepped new loggers with batteries and SD cards and waterproof tape to prevent biofouling, and then used snips and zipties to make the switch.

Scientific fishing! This helps get life history and population data for our target species, large pelagic fish. We collected biopsy samples, placed tags, and released primarily ahi, but also ono, and mahi. (Full disclaimer: this picture is from a subsistence fishing trip and not a scientific one, where people generally have too many things in their hands & are moving too quickly to take pictures. He was a very delicious dinner for our crew, though.)

Other marine tagging! I got to assist with bluewater cetacean tagging of several different dolphin and small whale species, and shark tagging for galapagos, blacktip reef, grey reef, and dusky sharks. Cetacean tagging was done with an air rifle, not easy at high speeds on the boat. Shark tagging was more hands-on, as we had to manually apply the tags.
Coral reef monitoring! The mission of these surveys was to track coral health through heat stress events, and to identify harmful species. I'm looking under the coral head in these pictures for crown-of-thorns starfish, one of the most urgent species threats to reefs in the Pacific.
This is the bastard. Notice the dead coral around him.
Oh I'm about to smack into the photo limit, huh. Please hold!

Hi there’s a tornado in my area rn but I’m spiteful like that. Random tsams/eaps headcanons be upon ye
Ruin still does those little audio log diaries. It helps manage his overflowing memory storage (read: old age = more memories to store) without compressing data files.
Bloodmoon sleeps with dog toys. Otherwise, they’d probably chew through whatever bedding material they had chosen that night. This was Ruin’s idea.
Eclipse can’t sleep with lights on in a room. Ruin can’t sleep without a light. The makeshift solution is a sleeping mask for Eclipse, but their actual compromise is a star projector.
Eclipse has to know where everyone is most of the time, especially after Charlie came into the picture. This is usually done with cameras and tracking via fazbear systems, but it’s an issue he has to work on, as it’s just a method to make him feel better about security now that there are people he cares about. At least one person has commented on there being a new nightguard.
Dark sun finds thrillers tacky, and prefers thought-provoking mysteries, bonus points for romance.
Most of them carry some kind of sanitizing wipe packet. For daycare attendants, these are for sticky messes and children. For those more familiar with tools, these are for tougher grime and are not suitable for sensitive (children’s) skin. Solar has both.
The eclipses (Eclipse, Solar, Ruin) are the most prone to damaging their rays. Eclipse sometimes hits doorways and doesn’t bother to fix cracked rays. Ruin is small enough for humans to reach his head. Solar peels the paint off of his. All three will pull or squeeze their rays in times of extreme stress, to varying degrees. Lunar is an exception for lack of rays. (Similarly, Sun fidgets with his rays, which is the source of this trait.)
While there are exceptions, Suns prefer tactile stimulation, Moons auditory, and Eclipses have no strong preference. Earth likes social interaction.
Animatronics have personalized UI that makes sense to them, which serves as their access point to their internal folders, like memory files, downloaded items, and executable programs. Bots that share an operating system/“brain” have the same UI. Diagnostics, software updates, and safety modes all require additional hardware (computers, parts and service devices, fazwrenches) to complete. Mindscapes are in AI chips, and multiple AIs in one mindscape happen when multiple AIs share the same operating system. Visual feed can be projected onto other screens with HDMI cables and vice versa, which can sometimes show that bot’s UI depending on what it is. For a more direct example of this think of the battery and blue borders you see in Security breach when Gregory is hiding inside Freddy.
Safety mode disconnects that bot from the Fazbear Ent. local network, meaning no tracking, no communication via local networks (which generally aren’t private anyway, most bots with access to phones prefer those), and no access to files that aren’t stored in that bot’s drive. This is meant to isolate a bot’s systems from the main network in case of a security breach (hah), make transportation of bots between locations easier, and make maintenance a smoother affair as there is no outside interference during the process. For the bots themselves, this is the equivalent of turning off your phone and going outside I mean focusing only on what’s in front of you instead of what’s going on in your area/social network. It’s possible to be stuck in safety mode. Depending on how much of a bot’s system relies on Fazbear Ent. Networks to function (such as a bot’s memory being stored in a Cloud, which is also ill advised between the bots themselves,) this can be mean a temporary personality/memory reset until those files get reconnected again. Bots do not need to be connected to the Fazbear ent networks to function, but it generally makes access to software updates easier due to being recognized as a company entity. It is possible for a private network to exist, but it’s considered foreign by Fazbear systems and can be more trouble than they’re worth. Moon and Eclipse have private networks shared with close friends and family for different purposes. Moon’s is mostly for emergency backups, and Eclipse’s is for security.
Animatronic’s memories are stored in the hard drives in their bodies. It’s possible to offload memory files into networks (Cloud) or external storage systems. If another bot had access to these clouds or external storages, they could experience the memories stored in them. Memory files include visual and auditory data, like a movie. AI/personality chips are the equivalent of a soul in that the AI is the product of a learning AI having experienced environments that supplied them information about the world AKA an Ai that developed a personality beyond their base programming, but they do not carry memories. For example, Eclipse V3-V4 is an Eclipse AI given incomplete memories, creating a disconnect in the AI’s learned behaviors and what it perceives as the source of that behavior, resulting in an incomplete backup. Backups are static/unchanging copies of integral memory files and the accompanying AI (As is in the moment that they are backed up.) Backups need to be updated as the animatronic it’s for develops.
#go easy on me I only have basic knowledge of computer stuff#quirky headcanons#tsams#eaps#I’m also halfway through a sociology class so take the AI one with a grain of salt#hopefully this makes sense

I got a government grant from a clean air project for turning in my '97 Corolla for a very hefty chunk of money off of a new (or new-ish) hybrid vehicle from an approved dealership, finally went to purchase my new car today with my dad, and ended up getting a 2025 Toyota Camry SE.
Sorry, Alastor, I think I'm with Vox on the front of technological advancement, ahaha. It's almost a 30 year jump in car technologies and I damn well feel like I've upgraded into the new century (or, well - millennium, technically)! This car does so many things and they all manage to feel like they are actually convenient rather than useless technology bloat. I think this is technically what Nietzsche meant when he said that to live is to suffer, LOL. Can't appreciate the good stuff if you haven't experienced the alternative! Also, y'know. My breaks lost pressure on me in the middle of a winding mountain road with no cell service last month, so. That was the sign to move on.
It's so wild to go from a car that's got a plain metal key, a phone charger operated through the cigarette lighter that only succeeds in making my phone lose charge more slowly, an AC system that would vibrate the whole dashboard alarmingly if it had to work too hard, and music that I played through a casette tape with bluetooth connectivity...to a car where I get in, put my phone down on the wireless charging pad, and watch the touchscreen automatically turn on with my Spotify and Google maps. Never again am I going to accidentally leave my headlights on and drain my car battery, LOL. Thanks, battery-attached jumper cables, you served me well. The car is so damn quiet and smooth, too.
Also, it's a very pretty car! I got it in white. Sorry, "windchill pearl."
Anyway, I'm just experiencing a delightful bit of awe and joy. Happy graduation and early birthday to me! <3
#personal#dear diary#my birthday's tomorrow on the 22nd so the timing on this was great#I was gonna get a corolla hybrid but we straight up could not find one in any of the grant-approved dealerships#and my dad convinced me to go for the camry instead and is helping me pay what the monthly payments are over my planned budget#for the next 3 years until I make attending physician money and can just pay the thing off posthaste#I'm also excited for dynamic cruise control instead of regular basic cruise control#and the safety features have already come in handy for pinging at me when a dude with a moped swerved into my blind spot#getting things squared away at the dealership took many hours so I had no energy to write today but man am I pleased as punch

Hi crow, hope you're doing well. I have a question for you and/or your mutuals reading this.
Im usually too sick and unwell to cast spells anymore, gathering all the ingredients is the biggest problem because i have to walk and thats really painful with my crps. I feel i have the emotional energy for spellcasting but not the physical energy. I have so many spells I'd like to cast but am just stuck in bed too often to do them. Whats a bedridden friendly way to cast spells? I've heard someone in the community mention "energy batteries" but i didn't really look into it. I feel my most useful spell I've done is a wishing necklace, i enchanted the necklace years ago and occasionally make wishes with it that come true, but i don't think i can rely only on that for spellcasting when im not feeling well. Im starting to ramble so I'll end it here. Thanks for any advice.
Hello! I'm sorry to hear you've been struggling. I'm not sure how applicable my advice will be for your situation, especially without knowing what sort of magical framework you're working with, but I'll give it a shot!
Something that's helpful for me is having premade spell vessels for the main sort of categories of needs I might have, which I can recharge and repurpose as needed. There's still a certain amount of set-up involved, but if you can manage to work on them when you're having a relatively good pain day, then you can (ideally) have them on hand for when you're not feeling up to a whole crafting process.
Example: I enjoy planetary magic as a system because you have 7 "planets" (the classical planets include the sun and moon), and they each have their things they can help you with. Between the 7 of them you can basically get your needs met. So I have a book that I made for Jupiter, which has images of the planet, the symbol, seal, kamea square, Orphic hymn, etc. in it, and inside the back cover is a little envelope where I can put petitions for what I currently need. The idea is that it's supposed to function as a sort of combination talisman and portable shrine, so when I want to do something under Jupiter's rulership, I basically just need pen, paper, a candle, and incense to repurpose it.
Side note: I don't know if you're interested in planetary magic, but I plan on making a series of zines that's basically a zine version of what I described above, one for each planet, that people can print out and assemble for free. Eventually. When I'm not drowning in work and other projects.
Along these lines, I recently posted about the fact that I do my job from bed about 60% of the week. I don't have a laptop, so I've had to get creative with my computing setup so that I can use my PC while reclining in bed. It's taken a few years to get my setup dialed in, but something like getting an overbed table can make a huge difference (I think mine was like $70 and worth every penny). Burning candles in bed is iffy, but maybe you can set up an extra bedside table or something for spell work, and really dial in the most basic components you need and can keep within reach. Simple is good! You can really do a lot with just pen and paper.
I also know people who do a lot of spell work during astral travel, which requires no materials or movement. I don't have a ton of experience in this area as I tend to really enjoy working with physical materials, but that might be an avenue to explore.
Alright, that's my thoughts on the matter for the moment. Opening it up to mutuals!

When the coronavirus pandemic hit in 2020, Roxana Borda Mamani had to leave Mexico, where she was studying for her degree and return to her remote village in the Peruvian Amazon. At the time, the Indigenous community in Alto Mishagua had neither an internet connection nor a reliable energy source.
“How am I going to study?” Borda asked. “With energy from the sun,” replied her friend
Borda began researching the components of an off-grid solar energy system: photovoltaic (PV) panels, a battery, an inverter and a charge controller. Five years later, her community has a 400W solar system powering a 24-hour satellite internet connection and charging points for phones and torches next to a small school that was set up thanks to the new energy source.

“Our idea was to be independent [and] promote the autonomy and self-management of the energy and communication systems,” says Borda. The project is called Aylluq Q’Anchaynin, which means “the energy of the community” in her native Quechua.

In the Ecuadorian Amazon, the Indigenous Achuar people decided they wanted solar power after consulting their elders and communal guayusa tea ceremonies. They have developed solar-powered boats that glide silently down the Capahuari River, learned how to operate and maintain them, and improved local education and their community tourism work thanks to solar panels being set up in 10 different communities.
This has also helped strengthen Achuar communities’ resistance to oil drilling on their land, says Nantu Canelos, director of the Kara Solar Foundation. “We’re building a future on our own terms.”

Chapter 1 : Never trust technology

3928 words. TW : light body horror
Acid rain poured over the wasteland that had once been the megalopolis of Los Angeles. The ruins of an ancient civilization were still apparent, the steel of wrecked cars on an abandoned road rusty enough that some of them were destroyed by the aggressive water. The vague growl of disintegrating iron floated in the air, the only sound accompanying the torrential rain that contaminated the few remaining lakes on this desolate ground. Steps suddenly appeared in the distance, proving that someone was still alive in this apocalypse. A large shape walked among the wrecked cars, pulling a damaged cart with one of its wheels threatening to give way. Tall, wearing a black suit that covered both his hands and his entire head, Jolly paced around the scrap metal searching for new pieces to bring back to the general headquarters.
“M.I.N.D., can you analyze this one?” he asked out loud.
A light clinking started, the same sound you hear when computing hardware connects together. The tall man waited patiently until the sound finally stopped.
“There is a MacBook in the trunk, a model from 2026,” replied a robotic voice that seemed to come from his helmet. “I can’t detect anything else, and I can’t tell if it’s in good condition.” “Could be useful. Even if some people hate Apple components.”
Jolly wiped the acid rain from his integrated glasses, and looked in his cart to pull out a crowbar. After a few seconds of effort, the trunk’s lock gave way allowing him to rummage through the contents. A backpack full of holes, a worn blanket, a can of oil…and at the bottom, a laptop pouch which certainly hid the jackpot. The Swedish man smiled ; it was a good find, for once.
“Acidic levels exceed the limit, the air is too toxic and my battery is running low. We should return to headquarters before we encounter any bad surprises,” warned the AI. “I also detected some prowlers less than a mile away.” “I take it all,” Jolly said. “We’ll check the content and its condition at home. Ask Folio and Ruffilo to join me at the meeting point, and signal the position of these prowlers.” “Got it, boss.”
“FUCK !”
The swear word bounced off the cave’s rough walls, then vanished into a dark corridor. This one was very sudden.
“Language, boss.” “Oh, shut up !”
Frustration accumulated on Noah’s shoulders. He was lying on his back, under a huge desk with a gigantic computer on it. His head was lost among large black cables, all of them linking many - maybe too many - screens hung on the cave’s walls. No neons here ; the only available light came from the screens themselves, which projected a pale and flickering glow. The entire scene looked like a film noir.
Our man was in that uncomfortable position, because half of the screens suddenly turned off, as if fried by lightning. Another swear word escaped, and he finally gave up. Some cables still crackled, and he had no other choice but to cut them and hope they wouldn't electrocute him.
“Everything is lost,” he said while standing up, a handful of black threads in his gloved hand. “M.I.N.D., please check that nothing else is corrupted.” “On it, boss !”
The computer’s main screen, on which some Python code was running, suddenly changed and displayed a series of folders. Working by itself, the machine searched through the files at an amazing speed. Noah’s face was marked by fatigue; dark circles had grown under his bloodshot eyes, his hands were shaking as if he were under immense stress. His long body, once well-maintained, was now missing a good part of his muscles and he looked diminished with his back bent over like an old man. Numerous scars adorned his bare arms, some newer than others, some tattoos even disappeared under old wounds. In one word, the poor lad had known better days.
“Corruption detected in the system, but I managed to recover the second-to-last save,” the robotic voice finally claimed. “I’m restoring it right now.” “Better than nothing,” Noah whispered, although he didn’t look relieved at all. “High cortisol levels and blood pressure. You should rest.” “Leave me the fuck alone! I don’t have time for this!”
The irritation made him irrational. Raging against the entire world, Noah put his hand over his right arm and pulled abruptly, ripping off what seemed to be a piece of black plastic. Where the thing was plugged in was now a simple metallic circle, tightly secured to his flesh. Looking up close, it vaguely resembled a catheter one could find in hospitals back then, and there was no doubt that it served the same purpose. That was what guaranteed their survival : a permanent connection with M.I.N.D. who offered constant protection in this hostile world. But although he pulled that away, Noah couldn’t sever the ties with the AI. Not anymore.
“I was programmed to look after your health before everything else, boss. If you take off the device, I can’t fulfill my mission in its entirety,” the AI explained in a terribly neutral tone. “If you wanna piss me off every five minutes about my health, you can get fucked, I’m not putting back that fucking chip!” “Noah, don’t be childish.”
Suddenly, the feminine voice became more human, more…palpable. Using his real name instead of “boss” was unusual for her, and it totally threw him off. That change alone was enough for him to stop what he was doing and stare at the main computer screen. He came closer, slowly, put his hands down on the desk as a woman’s face appeared in front of him. His heart missed a beat.
She was here, M.I.N.D., staring back at him with a soft but accusing glance, her cartoony anime-like features moving with a surprising fluidity. Her brunette hair gently floated around her face as if it were underwater, and her dark eyes looked too real to be true. A smile strained her lips, on the verge of the uncanny valley, but soon came back to normal and opened.
“There, I like it better like that,” she said. “If you overwork yourself and die in the process, your mission will not be fulfilled.” “Yes, but…”Noah tried, but she cut him off. “The others can’t win without the both of us. It would take them years. You and I, we’re made to do great things. I’m your shield against her, remember ? And you’re my vessel. If one of us disappears, the entire operation is compromised.” “And you’re telling me that because…?” “You, humans, have a fragile carnal envelope. You have to take care of it. If you forget to take care of it for too long, you may die. The smallest mistake could be fatal.”
M.I.N.D. was right, obviously. Noah knew that deep down, he couldn’t last very long in a fight in his current condition. The stress kept him awake and he did overwork himself. However, this behavior didn’t make him win enough time to justify its existence. He should calm down.
A sigh, and suddenly he looked diminished again. These past couple of years felt like he aged ten years, and the more time passed, the less he felt even human. His eyes searched on the floor to find M.I.N.D.’s chip, which he fixed back where it belonged and winced when the device connected again. It wasn’t pleasant at all.
“Will you give me a sleeping pill?” he mumbled.
The AI’s avatar disappeared from the screen and the Python code appeared again. It was obviously running it in the background, like a deciphering algorithm.
“Of course, boss.” she said, taking back her usual robotic voice. “I’ll still be restoring the system while you rest your body.” “Jolly will surely fix you. If I’m not awake by then, leave the total access to your parameters to him. Except…” “Except the “core” folder, of course. On it, boss. Good night and sweet dreams.”
Jolly’s patience started to grow thin. His eyes swept over the plains, looked at his stats displayed on his right forearm, then looked at the landscape again. He had given the signal a while ago and hoped that his two acolytes would soon be by his side. With a deep sigh, the tall man kicked a stone that rolled further away. He was lucky in his misfortune : the acid rain calmed down a bit, and some radioactive rays of sunshine pierced through the dark clouds.
“How much time again ?” he grumbled out loud. “Folio seems close,” M.I.N.D. replied. “But I’ve lost contact with Ruffilo. He doesn’t reply to my requests, but I still have access to his vitals.” “His suit’s battery must be running low, like all of ours. We should think about taking a walkie-talkie like the old days, if we can find some.” “You wanna replace me, boss ?” “Of course not! Just…ah, nevermind.”
A dark silhouette finally appeared, struggling to pull a cart that looked maybe three times as full as Jolly’s. The man raised an eyebrow ; Folio had totally let go of the salvage, and he doubted that all his findings were very useful. Not even mentioning that his tarpaulin was gone, and the metal on top of all these things was significantly damaged by the rain.
“Folio, seriously?” Jolly sighed. “What? I need a lot of scrap steel to fix the ventilation !” the youngest justified. “And you think that your rusty stuff will be helpful?”
Nick shrugged, and crossed his arms over his chest out of defiance. As the youngest and the last addition to their team, he was always hot-headed and didn’t really like to follow orders. It was a real miracle that nothing happened to him, apart from a few scratches here and there. Not to mention the chip he too had on his arm, the only body modification they all consented to make. Noah was the only one who went further than that, but he had a very good reason to give up a part of his humanity behind.
“We should go home, shouldn’t we ?” The rain is starting to pour again,” Folio said, staring at his suit’s screen. “Five more minutes,” Jolly replied. “I’m sure he’ll join us soon.” “Maybe he’s already home ?” “He’s got orders, as we all do. He wouldn’t do anything against this order. It would be too dangerous, and he knows that.”
The oldest of them all started to be very concerned about Ruffilo’s absence, and his lack of patience began to show through jerky gestures. He checked his oxygen levels again, the time on his screen, and finally let out a swear word.
“C’mon, we have to find him”, he ordered in a serious tone. “Eh…don’t you want me to stay here and watch our stuff?” Nick tried. “If something happened to him, it means that the entire zone is way too dangerous to stay alone. You’re coming with me, that’s an order!” “Yeah, yeah…no need for high horses here.”
The young man kicked a stone to show his frustration, but complied and abandoned his findings to follow his elder. Jolly’s attitude proved how stressed he was, probably more troubled by their friend’s absence than he let on. Under his helmet, his face turned pale and his jaw was clenched, his dark blue eyes underlined by dark circles couldn’t stop sweeping over the plains in fear of a bad surprise. For that matter, he reached behind him and grabbed his assault rifle, checked the ammo and kept it in hand. Folio mimicked him ; if the eldest stayed alert that way, it meant that danger was upon them.
Seconds dragged as they walked through the ruins, the rain pouring more than ever with a concerning intensity. Fortunately for them, the wind was weak; a storm right now would be the worst timing ever. Each quiver was a potential threat, be one of the creatures that lived in this apocalyptic landscape or those who didn’t have their best interests in mind. More than ever, it was the silence, slightly broken by the moving metal under the acid, that was the creepiest.
“We should have found him already, shouldn’t we…?” Nick murmured, unable to stay silent as the stress was too high. “Shh,” was Jolly’s only response.
He thought the same thing, but hoped not to draw attention. The two of them could take on many opponents if they had the element of surprise ; it could save their lives. So they had to stay silent.
Too many minutes passed until they finally heard a growl not so far away. Jolly immediately turned towards the noise, wondering if he wasn’t heading straight into danger. But if danger there was, the hope to find their last teammate was also high ; the risk was calculated, and necessary. He adjusted his grasp on his weapon and walked closer and closer, until he froze. A piercing, inhuman scream, followed by a cry of pain, made his skin crawl.
“Fuck,” he cursed before immediately taking off running.
It was Nicholas’s voice, mixed with one of these prowlers’ shrieks. Fortunately, a few seconds were enough for them to find him, and what they saw froze them in terror.
A dark shadow thrashed on the ground, struggling to escape half a dozen of these humanoid creatures. Their skins were peeling off under the acid rain, their eyeless faces were cut in half by a big grinning mouth filled with sharp teeth. Their bestial growls were frightening, so horrifying that Folio stood completely paralyzed.
It wasn’t the case for Jolly. He raised his weapon in a flash and shot, exploding one of these monsters’ skull. A second bullet reached the throat of another one, and almost beheaded it. Unfortunately, the four remaining creatures were immediately drawn to this new threat. They turned toward him, abandoning the poor soul still writhing on the ground.
“Folio, move your fucking ass !” Jolly shouted, and finally his friend snapped out of his lethargy.
He drew his weapon too, hands shaking, and fired at one of the targets. His bullet flew past its ear, provoking a threatening shriek while turning its face towards him. Sheer panic blurred his vision, his breath grew short, and his focus dropped to near zero. He fired again; the bullet struck the creature’s shoulder, but it didn’t seem to care. It was still moving far too fast in his direction.
“No, no, no…” he moaned, emptying his ammo at the creature, half his shots didn’t even graze its deformed body. The rest of them landed somewhere in its stomach, but it didn’t seem to care.
He was about to die, right here and now. Die because he was too stupid to aim, too scared to save his friends. How could he think he’d be useful outside ? Despite the training, now that he was in the field, he realized that it was completely different and was losing his composure. The creature was now almost upon him. In a few seconds, it would pull his head off and devour what’s left of him. He stepped back, stumbled over a rock, and fell hard. Raising his arms to shield himself, he knew it was useless.
BANG.
The gunshot was so violent that Nick’s ears were ringing. His suit was now splattered with his enemy’s brain matter, from head to torso. What remained of the creature’s body slumped onto his legs, twitching slightly. He glanced over it, eager to see who had just saved his life, and saw a frail silhouette who was clearly struggling to stay upright. The barrel of its rifle was still pointing on him, held one-handed and pressed against the figure’s abdomen for support.
“Up !” this savior ordered in a hoarse voice, which he finally recognized as Ruffilo’s.
Ashamed of what he had just done, giving in to sheer panic instead of fighting properly, Folio immediately obeyed and pushed the body away with disgust. He realized that Jolly had already taken care of the rest of the creatures, and his cheeks turned red. Under his helmet, no one could see it. Good for him.Â
“Erm… thanks…” he whispered. “Humpf,” Nicholas mumbled.
He was still struggling to stand up. When he could finally look at him more closely, Nick understood that his elder’s suit was in critical condition. His shoulder was exposed, marked with an impressive and bloody bite. The skin around the main bruise should normally be intact, but instead it was already melting due to the ever-present acid rain. His left hand was unprotected as well, and the plates on his back were misplaced. His clothes underneath wouldn’t hold up to the weather for long.
“M.I.N.D., can you analyze his vitals ?” Jolly asked. “It seems my sensors are damaged,” the AI replied. “Your suit’s battery is almost out. Energy-saving mode activated.”
The eldest cursed under his breath. Of course, they couldn’t rely on this bloody AI… but she had already warned them multiple times prior to that encounter, they could only blame themselves.
“We have to go back home,” he declared, and gave a piece of cloth to his friend. “Put your hand in that thing, it will limit the damage…” “Should we go back and pick up our stuff, or…?” Folio asked in a feeble voice. “No, they stay where they are. His condition is critical, and he’s been bitten. There’s no time to waste. We’ll go back for them later.”
“Boss, the team is back. They need you.”
Noah awoke from a deep sleep, his chalky face still weary from the past few days. How much time had he slept? Five minutes? Two hours? Nothing that could fix his problems, though, but he didn’t have a choice. If M.I.N.D. decided to wake him up after all her efforts to force him to rest, the situation must be urgent. He left his makeshift bed, stretched, and joined the cave’s main room.Â
The three men had taken off their suits and showed obvious signs of conflict. Folio was hanging their equipment on the wall, Ruffilo was sitting half-naked on the central steel-made table and Jolly was searching frantically in what they called the “nurse’s desk”. It was a simple chest with many drawers, in which one could find everything they needed to treat a wound, cure a disease or, in this case, an infection. Noah came closer to the light, frowning, and Jolly jumped in surprise when he saw him.
“Noah!” he shouted suddenly. “M.I.N.D. told us not to bother you…” “She woke me up,” the man replied. “Can you report what happened?” “Ruffilo was late to the meeting point, so we tried to find him. He came upon a group of prowlers and was badly injured. His suit is half destroyed, and he’s been bitten…and also injured by the acid rain.” “Shit. Do we still have any antidote left ?” “That’s what I’m looking for, and…AHA !”
Jolly pulled out a very small vial of dark liquid, smirking. The prowlers’ bite was highly infectious, and if they didn’t want Nicholas to turn into one of them, they had to act swiftly. Noah sighed in relief, came closer to the injured man, and patted his thigh.
“You’re always looking for trouble, aren’t you?” he teased to ease the mood. “You should know me by now,” the other replied in a whisper.
Speaking was still painful, his body seemed too busy fighting the spreading infection and easing the pain in his shoulder and hand. The shoulder, by the way, had turned a nasty purple, another sign that the wound was far from being benign.Â
Jolly approached with a syringe. He made sure that no air bubble would risk killing their friend, and stabbed it just below the wound. With a bit of luck, the antidote’s effect would take only a few minutes to be felt. For the rest… Nicholas would certainly suffer for a while.
“You seem troubled, Nick.”
Noah had enough of the headquarters, and immediately suggested going back outside to bring back their findings. M.I.N.D. wasn’t very cooperative at first, but she had to comply. Nick couldn’t just go back alone, Jolly was their best medic and had to monitor Nicholas’s health, and they desperately needed new components.
“No, well…yeah…I mean…what makes you think…?” the youngest stuttered, avoiding his friend’s glance. “You’ve been silent since we left the HQ. It’s unusual, coming from you.” “Oh, erm…well…”
Folio didn’t know what to reply. How could he possibly share his shame with the only one in their team who seemed perfectly unable to feel fear ? How could he share how useless he felt, that he may have compromised their mission and could have simply died because he was too stupid to fight ? He should have stayed hidden underground like a rat, instead of following them on this crazy journey. He thought he’d become a hero from the shadows, but in the end…he was just a burden for them.
“I screwed up,” he whispered, lowering his head. “Screwed up?” Noah repeated. “Earlier, I…I panicked. It almost cost my life, and…if Nicholas hadn't been there, I’d be dead by now.”
Silence. All one could hear was the sound of their steps in the apocalyptic desert. The rain stopped but the sky was still dark, and they weren’t safe from another shower. Suddenly, the older man stopped. He looked away in the distance, thinking.
“It’s perfectly normal to screw up sometimes,” he simply said. “But I shouldn’t have…I mean, I trained ! I should have known how to fight too. Jolly did everything, as usual.” “You remind me of myself a few years ago. Believe me, what you did today was nothing compared to the mess I’ve done in the past.”
Folio took off his helmet and glanced at his friend, wondering what the hell he was talking about, but Noah remained silent. He was lost in his thoughts, certainly thinking about that time he endangered many lives. Since he joined these rebels hoping to give sense to his life, the youngest of them all didn’t really bother to learn about the others’ past. Or yes, he did ; he tried to ask around, but nobody dared to speak and share their stories. So he learned not to ask again, but his curiosity was still high.
“Nicholas saved my life when we were kids,” Noah said while checking the inside of the carts they finally reached. “He often put himself in danger to save my ass. He hated me on principle, because I was an arrogant little brat…but he stayed with me, taught me everything he knew and followed me when I decided to launch this mission.”
That was the very first time Noah consented to delve a bit into his memories, and Folio felt honored. He stared at him with big glowing eyes, hung on every word, and finally understood that he wanted to reassure him.
“So…you don’t think he’s angry at me ?” Nick asked hopefully. “And…and Jolly neither ? He’s fought them all alone, and…”
“Jolly is a soldier before anything else,” the eldest interrupted. “He keeps a cool head in every circumstance, and never lets his emotions win. It’s normal not to measure up to him", he’s got way more experience than you do. And…if he were angry at you, you’d definitely know. He’s rather direct.”
Deep down, Noah’s mission was a success : Folio felt confident again, and understood that a simple mistake wouldn’t kill them on the spot. He just had to make sure he wouldn’t repeat the same mistake in a more delicate situation, that’s all. He smiled, happy about this news. He then grabbed his cart, threw his helmet in it and headed back to the headquarters.
“Oh, by the way…I thought you and Ruffilo were the best of friends in the world since forever,” he said and Noah laughed. “Naaaah…our story is rather spectacular, and there was a long time during which we would have killed each other if it weren’t for the greater good. But now, nothing and no one can tear us apart. Just like with Jolly, and you. You’re in the team now. It’s us four against the world.”

Crack Ship of the Week back again with another post! (After nearly an entire month) Lately I've been working a lot of 10+ hour shifts at my current job, along with helping out at my family's restaurant, updating my résumé, and searching for other jobs to advance my culinary career, so I've been really busy, sorry for not posting in quite a while. On the plus side, I've managed to network with some industry professionals higher up the ladder, and I was recently contracted by a personal chef agency!
Without further ado, let's bring out
This Week's Crackship:
Party Poison (Danger Days) Ă— Johnny Silverhand (Cyberpunk)

Ship Name(s):
Poison Hand, Dim Mak (see notes below for explanation), Rockerboys, Ronin (see notes below for explanation)
Why It's Crack:
No interactions (separate canons)
Why It's Cracked:
Canons share many similarities. Both are cyberpunk series set in an alternate universe California in the near future (now partially set in the near past, as well), following a war or series of wars that negatively impacted the United States' geopolitical power, costing it territory that would be filled in by an independent city-state (Battery City in Danger Days, and Night City in Cyberpunk) and the resultant power vacuum being filled in by megacorporations (Better Living Industries in Danger Days and Arasaka in Cyberpunk. Like Arasaka, Better Living also seems to be a multinational corporation with at least some notable amount of presence in Japan, hence Better Living having had a .jp domain during the Danger Days album's promotional period, as well as using both English and Japanese writing in much of its content). Crossover potential abounds
Both fill very similar niches in their respective stories (renegade rockers who rebel against corporate overreach with the power of punk rock, and occasionally this gun they found. They both became the exemplar of their respective series' spin on the "rebel with a cause" archetype [Killjoys in Danger Days, and Rockerboys in Cyberpunk])
Both lived and operated in similar timeframes, not taking into account Johnny's engram who stars in Cyberpunk 2077. Party was active in the 2010s up until his death in 2019, and Johnny was active throughout the 2000s up until his death in 2023)
Both are war veterans (Johnny is a confirmed war veteran who deserted the US Military in protest of the government's corruption and purposeful destabilization of Central and South America. Party Poison was likely one of the many Killjoys to take part in the Analog Wars, as implied by the lyrics of The Only Hope For Me Is You)
Both died a similar death, to somewhat similar people, for similar reasons. Both raided the main HQ of their respective antagonistic megacorps in order to rescue an abducted loved one (surrogate little sister "The Girl" in Party's case, and former lover Alt Cunningham in Johnny's case), during which they were brutally gunned down by their corporate foes' bald and sociopathic enforcer (Korse and Adam Smasher, respectively)
Both dye their hair. Party Poison's hair is dyed red (natural color unknown afaik), and Johnny Silverhand dyes his hair black, with it being naturally blond.
Notes
"Dim Mak", also known as "Poison Hand" or "Touch of Death" is a purported system of acupressure-based martial arts said to have originated in ancient China and been culturally imported to Japan. Count Juan Raphael Dante, an eccentric martial arts practitioner who taught karate in the 60s and 70s, also claimed to be able to teach Dim Mak to prospective students, infamously advertising this alleged service in the back page ad spaces in Marvel comic books of the time. This likely was seen at times by Gerard Way, an avid comic fan, as he titled one of the songs in the wider Danger Days multimedia project as Black Dragon Fighting Society, which shares an identical name with the martial arts organization founded by Count Dante. "Dim Mak" is also the name of a record label founded by Steve Aoki, who made a remix of the famous My Chemical Romance song "Welcome to the Black Parade". This fact is also relevant to the ship as Dim Mak distributes punk rock music, with punk rock being the primary genre performed by both Party Poison and Johnny Silverhand.
"Ronin" was chosen a ship name due to their shared status as outlaw warriors, similar to (but generally less shitty towards bystanders than) the ronin of Sengoku and early Edo-period Japan. Party is an outlaw vigilante who fights against BLI, whereas Johnny is a former US soldier who deserted and fled prosecution by moving to Night City. In addition, this name was chosen in reference to Johnny's band, Samurai. Keanu Reeves, who portrays Johnny in Cyberpunk 2077, also starred in the 2013 American remake of The 47 Ronin (unfortunately)

g0re you should put some stuff here about what you're writing it sounds really cool and I want to know more :3
nnghh i shold, i've tried many a time to actually organize all my shit into one easily digestable megadoc that i can just throw at people instead of like. actually doing a proper elevator pitch but i still have yet to complete it.
in the meantime though as for what the world actually IS - a fantasy setting defined by how much of it is dominated by these big ol' spooky woods. This region is absolutely massive, very difficult to navigate, chock full of magic, and incredibly hostile to anyone that dares to make a living within its trees! I've named it Fortune, since Fortune favors the bold.
Due to time constraints I'm not gonna go into a full history of expeditions and settlement efforts, but the TL;DR is that by the time in which the story takes place, methods of crossing the woods are in existence but they still act as a very concrete barrier for getting around. They're much more manageable in daylight and with a light source, but if you have any trip lasting longer than a day you absolutely need to have a safe place to stop at. There's a ton of little towns and safe havens along trade routes and foot paths, but getting there is often a tall order.
There's two distinct 'regions' to be concerned with, separated into two halves - the more established east half of the island, where the woods are far less dense, and where the current ruling body alongside most of the island-continent's population resides, and the settlements of the west half which are almost entirely restricted to the western coast and wherever else there's enough open area from the woods. Most of the story will take place on this western half, and more specifically in a few towns closer to the coast.
How the balance of power shakes up is a bit confusing to describe, but basically, it's that these western establishments are self-sufficient. They don't have their own full on mini-governments or kingdoms, but they also don't really answer to a higher rank. How I'd describe it is more or less like that mid-early period in Britain's colonization of America - *technically*, everyone here has an allegiance to the Crown, but who's really keeping track at this point? They're on the other side of [the ocean/the woods] and the guy that's supposed to be enforcing that doesn't really do much, might as well just go about ourselves and tend to our farms and businesses. That's more or less the crux of Fortune as a worldbuilding project, and probably the most well-established part of it so far. I'm still trying to settle on other incredibly important stuff.
Consistent technology is hard to establish - I love the aesthetics of...say, 'rustic rust', I'd call it, but I'm still trying to better define it. It's infuriating, but my biggest influences in terms of visuals are HIGHLY anachronistic in how they combine all their elements together. I would LOVE to have something like a technology level around Amulet's or Bones', or something where I could reasonably get away with mixing sword and spear with manual-action firearms and steel plants and windmills and automatons and galleys and whatnot, but i'm still unsure as to how I would go about mixing other technologies in there. Like, fuckin I dunno, pick some 'modern' tech out of a hat. How weird is it to say that I don't want cars but I would like factories to exist. I can't even give an upper or lower limit in terms of our own world's time, so I really need to get particular with it. it's not that i'm trying to like, adhere to hard and rigid worldbuilding, I just want to be able to describe it more efficiently than I just did lmao
Magic is a little bit more easy to say - a softer magic system, but with some stipulations in order to better create narrative stakes and such, like the typical 'equivalent exchange', channeling rules, magic sinks and magic 'batteries', 'healing' magic can't fix, it can only speed up the process, yada yada.
There are a couple of interesting facets, though - for instance, magic is so goddamn prevalent on Fortune on account of those spooky woods that actually doing magic is super fucking easy, like a toddler could do it without much prompting. There's a million different ways to do it - runes and lexigraphy, spoken and written words, waggling your hands in a specific way while thinking really hard, or pitching a funny rock at some idiot's head. The caveat is that while it's easy to *do*, it's actually pretty difficult to *learn*. If you're seeking a career path that takes even the slightest bit of magical proficiency, you need to be educated on magic. I've equated it to learning an instrument - anyone can pick up a trumpet and hold a note, but you need to learn how to play arrangements and songs to actually do anything with that trumpet, and if you want to be able to improv you have to practice a whole lot more.
I also don't have much in the way of actual fauna and flora, and I would prefer to trend away from having humans as default or of a binary with like, 'sentient monsters' being the other half. that is BORING. the one interesting thing so far is that i made some guys that look like typical fantasy ass elves with long ears and freaky eyes, but they're actually just...offshoots of merfolk that just started doin' it on land. if they get over-exposed to magic, they'll re-develop those fishy bits.
As for anything else...I lost track. I'm sure I missed something important to explain, so when I remember (and when it is not 4 am) I will add it. questioms are cool too ig although i don't know how comprehensively i'll be ablw to answer
