It really is so fun that Essek started mentioning "my partner" like every three lines because he probably doesn't actually get the chance to talk about it that often.
I think there can often be an impulse when you really care about someone to want to shout from the rooftops all the great things you feel and notice about them, and Essek isn't really in a position to do that. The people who he can talk freely to already know him and Caleb, and the people who don't know them likely aren't safe to tell real personal details to. It's one thing to fabricate a parental relationship knowing that there isn't someone to trace that to, but it's an entirely different thing to tell someone honestly about the people you love when any small detail might put them in danger if it fell into the wrong hands.
The Hells are safe to say that kind of thing to—perhaps mostly on a meta level, in that the DM is aware that they are the protagonists—and they also characteristically tend to offer a listening ear to anyone they meet, and I think it's delightful that Essek actually recognized and responded to that.

Obsessed with the way the passenger (2023) juxtaposes the incredibly serious with the comically absurd. And they exist simultaneously, never contradicting each other. I love how it manifests in the visual language of the movie, and is also at the core of the story! I think it's so important to the ethos of the movie that the genesis of Randy's life-altering trauma is sort of ridiculous. It being ridiculous does not change the emotional impact of it on Randy, and it's still treated with tenderness and gravity.
The sharpness of the juxtaposition feels sort of surreal or jarring at certain moments, but I think it's actually part of what makes the movie hit a real, emotional nerve. The thing that's been haunting you for years does not always seem so obvious out of context. Or sometimes the thing haunting you IS so obviously unspeakably bad that it's going to kill you, and the only way you can talk about it is to say something as trivial as, "I wanted to be a giraffe when I grew up."
A fuzzy yellow sweater and childhood sexual abuse. A lifetime of denying yourself agency or personhood, and a woman with a color-coordinated eyepatch for every outfit. A brutal workplace shooting and bedazzled stuffed animals.
Which speaking of, it's also why, in my opinion, the epilogue does work. It reverses the dynamic from serious with a side of comical to comical with a side of serious. Our focus is on the eraser game, the sillier part of Randy's traumatic story, while the lasting impact of violence lurks quietly in the background (Randy's still physically injured, he's still got the jacket). And then the last shot of the stuffed animals is the *chefs kiss* on top of the whole thing!

I go crazy whenever I remember that Natsu is the reason Bora’s love-charm on Lucy breaks in the 1st chapter. I mean yeah Mashima didn’t have anything in mind for Nalu at that time but I still think he did that subconsciously because he said he loves pairing the main leads (ntm all of his mangas have the leads together). Later Lucy says the charm doesnt work once realisation hits the victim, which doesn’t deny (nor confirm) that Natsu stirs up something inside Lucy that doesn’t happen to the other girls for some reason. It’s not mentioned why or how Natsu does that but all I can think is fate.

My opinion on the matter in as few words as possible and why I want Moash to persist as a character through the second half of the series.

rewatching S04E02 for the ST Sans Visages set (FINALLY, I know) and...I really want to speak to the "Jonathan would never lie to Nancy about taking her home at Steve's behest because he doesn't gain anything" crew from the other day. Yknow. For reasons

This boy, for better or worse, lies to protect Nancy's feelings first and foremost...and he has done it more than once. He's doing it as we speak moving into season 5 about college, and he did it in S2 about taking her home at someone else's request. (Idc how you feel about Steve. Please be so absolutely serious rn)

the way under the bridge has becca see herself in the teens of seven oaks, particularly josephine and warren, when in actuality she has much more in common with kelly (background-wise, at least), coupled with her anti-police beliefs vs cam being a first nations cop + the historical & institutional baggage that carries, is so interesting to me. not fully sure how to articulate this yet but the show is putting forth a specific form of (anti-institution yet still benefiting from/privileged ?) whiteness i don't think i've ever seen in media and is really a testament to the thought that the writers have put into in creating becca and cam's characters and the larger paradigms they're meant to portray

my love to the people who didn’t get up today
who didn’t face their fears today
who didn’t do the coping mechanisms
my love to the people who had breakdowns today.
my pride in the people who aren’t proud of themselves.
my love to the people who feel unworthy of love.
my love to the people who didn’t ride the wave but rather were swallowed by it, for they are still treading water even though they can’t see the shore.
you didn’t bring it on yourself. it’s just heavy. and it is not your fault. 🌹🌹
