I always tell people that one of my favorite things about Oliver is the way he talks about movies. I’ve never met anyone more romantic about them than he is. No matter the film, he can always find something to like. It’s not just that he wants to give filmmakers the benefit of the doubt, but he can truly connect to the essence of a story’s intention and identify the most beautiful themes. (And I’m not gonna lie, it can be annoying when I just want to be a hater…)

He has an enviable memory when it comes to remembering the plots, cast lists, release years, and award history of pretty much every movie he’s ever seen. He’s so many people’s go-to guy when it comes to movie recommendations, and I can’t help but be so proud of him whenever I hear him discussing his thoughts with other people. The best part is that he will never make you feel bad about your own opinions; he loves hearing other perspectives, is open to having his mind changed, and genuinely just wants to talk about his favorite thing in the world: Movies.

When he told me he was thinking of starting a youtube movie review channel, it felt like a perfect fit. I almost can’t believe he hadn’t done it sooner!

Well funnily enough the one hot take I for sure know the majority of my mutuals don't particularly agree with is one I literally just saw one of them say LMAO but I think the monastery is not NEARLYYYYYY as bad as people try to make it out to be. 272 - 8 Women (Patreon Selects)

Our Patreon Selects series continues with another dive into French cinema! In 2002, director Francois Ozon delivered an actress bonanza with 8 Women, an homage of Douglas Sirk and Alfred Hitchcock that's also a musical and also murder mystery and also a celebration of the biggest French actresses of the moment. Set at Christmas, its titular ensemble tries to discover who among them has killed the family patriarch. Despite a solid run for France in the aughts with their Oscars submissions, Ozon's treacly affair did not make it to the Oscar ball.

This episode, we talk about Ozon's filmography and France's current difficulties nabbing an International Feature Oscar despite their stature in the race. We also talk about the career of Chris' fave Isabelle Huppert, the film as Harold They're Lesbians core, and our thoughts on The Taste of Things' chances this year.

After adjusting for inflation, this week's two films rank in the top 10 highest grossing films of all time.

The Sound of Music is one of those films that everyone should see at least once. It's an absolute classic and the music is catchy. On the other hand, it's a cheesy story once it is forced to get serious in the final act.

Reviews for the film were mixed between corny and brilliant, especially from Bosley Crowther of The New York Times, who seems to be both praising and scolding Andrews and Plummer for their performances. At one point he called the direction "cosy-cum-corny", the meaning of which I'm still unsure.

Reviews for Doctor Zhivago were a mixed bag as well (NYT review also from Crowther). It extends past 3 hours, but to what benefit? Like The Sound of Music, Doctor Zhivago was visually stunning, but it does not seem to have enough plot to justify the run time. Too much of the film seems to be centered on Omar Shariff's solemn, teary-eyed stare.

No matter, the plot is interesting enough to follow and the cast does a great job. While Julie Christie will not will an Oscar for her role of Lara, she will win this year for her role in fellow Best Picture nominee Darling.

The Sound of Music and Doctor Zhivago both entered the 38th Academy Awards with 10 noms and left with 5 Oscars. The two films overlapped on 7 of the 10 categories, splitting almost perfectly down the middle for wins.

Despite being two of the highest grossing films of all time, both films are falling behind typical winners and upsets with their current reception. These Metascores are some of the lowest I've seen so far.

An interesting note for Doctor Zhivago: despite ranking #39 on the AFI's Top 100 in 1998, it became the highest ranked film to not make the 2007 list.

Unofficial Review: Doctor Zhivago feels like Oscar bait. It's whatever. Granted, The Sound of Music is just musical Oscar bait. But at least I enjoyed it.
