"Accommodations give disabled people an advantage over non-disabled peers"
TW: mentions of ableism, mistreatment of disabled children, and it's effects, mentions of fatphobia
For context, my sisters and I all grew up in the late 90s/early 00s with different disabilities (overlap was acknowledged later in life). My eldest sister has autism with some support needs without intellectual disability, my older sister has dysgraphia, and I have asthma. Looking back, none of us were fully accommodated.
At home, when my sister would have meltdowns due to sensory overload or changes in environment, and my mom consistently chose to scream at her for "misbehaving"/"being difficult". In order to stop the chaos, I was often left to comfort my sister. Often, I would simply offer her ice-cold water and tissues, and things would calm down.
In middle school, I remember she went to an alternative school in order to accommodate her better. While it was very valuable to have her learn the bus system and the self-reliance of getting to school, this program taught 4th grade math to her in 8th grade. She struggled with getting back on track with math for years. Eventually, she left due to difficulties with other students and the lack of consequences for various unacceptable behaviors.
In high school, she was supposed to pass a language course in order to graduate. She took Spanish, since my mom was offering to help with her knowledge of Spanish. However, this didn't help, even with my mom's college-level knowledge of Spanish. Notably, she didn't speak English in full sentences until she was seven years old. ASL was also not an option, but fortunately they waived the language requirement. Graduation was a close call, for other reasons, as well.
My older sister's experience is what is prompting this post. She has struggled with dysgraphia throughout her school years, and it was never accommodated. While she was a prodigy with immense knowledge of history, it would never come across in her writing. She was diagnosed around 10th grade, which she remained in denial about. However, my mom talked to the school regarding accommodations, and they had nothing to offer. Throughout her education, she would fail every writing assignment or writing-based class she was given. This was especially frustrating when classes that didn't revolve around writing paragraphs made her do it, anyways. She only passed 10th grade Physical Science since my mom knew the teacher, and asked that he not account for the lack of writing assignments and explained her situation. What prompted this post was actually my dad finding her SAT results, and me discovering that she had all zeros for her essay score, despite getting a 1170 for the multiple choice portion. (Quick aside: standardized testing should NOT be considered indicative of any student's performance if they cannot properly accommodate disabled students.) She did graduate, but my family wasn't sure the school would let her.
In my case, throughout elementary, middle, and high school, gym class felt like I was constantly fighting for my life. While I was allowed to have my inhaler on me starting in 6th grade or so, I was still expected to do the exercises everyone else had to do. I was not allowed to take breaks, technically, but I did. This was especially noticeable when we would run laps around the gym. Every time I did so, I was harassed by the PE instructor until I kept running. Games weren't much better, either. I was always picked last (which makes sense), but not only that, I was purposefully targeted during games. I was openly mocked as I did my best to participate.
In 9th grade, things hit a wall. When swimming was introduced to the class, I outright refused. I kept "forgetting to bring my swimsuit", when that stopped working I "had to go to the health clinic", and when that stopped working, I got a note from the health clinic excusing me from the swimming portion of gym class.
The PE teacher did not go down without a fight, nor did my parents. I was told that I could have to do it again when we moved schools the next year (that school ended up not having a swimming pool), that I wouldn't graduate without this credit, that I was making the situation worse by singling myself out in this way, and that I would get an F in gym anyways. They eventually acknowledged my excuse, but made me sit by the pool as everyone swam so I could take notes on the same article about what to do in case of a drowning every week.
Peers would acknowledge me from the pool, friends would say hi and guys would mock me. Girls I didn't know would talk about how strange my lack of participation was. Meanwhile at this time, my dad was making me log my calories on MyFitnessPal and I was very aware of how "different" my body was from the other kids. I would have panic attacks just thinking about going into the pool. While it was hard, I don't regret fighting for what I needed. Also of note: it was a chlorine pool, and chlorine heavily affects my asthma. Sometimes my lungs would hurt just being in the pool room. This wasn't really acknowledged, I would wheeze while walking up the stairs, and it often hurt to sing in choir after pool days.
I also struggled with ADHD throughout K-12, but I wasn't diagnosed until after I graduated high school. However, as an AFAB person, I constantly had teachers mention symptoms of ADHD in my comments. It started with not turning in work and doodling/chatting in classes I didn't care about, but it eventually spread to other classes that interested me. I also struggled with severe compartmentalization, which I didn't realize until after high school. I couldn't remember what my homework was when I was at home. If I remembered what the assignment was, I couldn't remember the information needed to complete it! This meant I did any homework I did complete while at school.
Fortunately, graduating high school didn't turn out to be a problem for me. After a rough freshman year, I turned things around. I became a member of NHS my senior year and finished out pretty strong. That was, until COVID. I had my therapist send a note saying I was not in a place to do schoolwork, and to simply keep my grades from pre-lockdown. I didn't get AP credit for AP Biology, but I learned plenty. I also withdrew from my dual-enrolled Calculus 2 course. Looking back, with my compartmentalization issue, there was no way online school would work for me.
So yeah, actually being disabled in school isn't a walk in the park! Imagine that! For anyone wondering, we're all doing fairly well now. My eldest sister works janitorial in a hospital setting and enjoys it, since she finds the surgical field fascinating and doesn't mind all the blood and such. She did eventually catch up in math in community college, but she wasn't able to finish the degree (due to her advisor). My older sister works retail and is a union steward. A lot of what she does is mainly talking and some basic math. Fortunately, if she needs to write, she can just use a computer, since the physical act of writing is what is a lot of what's hard for her. Spellcheck is also helpful. I spent my summer doing more intensive mental health care, and now I'm more directed than I have been for years. I'm currently waiting on hearing back about a bank teller job, and I'm looking forward to that!
If anyone is currently struggling with accessibility in education, just know what you are asking for is reasonable. All you are asking for is equal opportunity education, and you should not be denied that.

THE FAITHFUL SECRETARY

Before the women’s movement, back when Father knew best and network TV made room for Daddy, when Mary Tyler Moore was Laura Petrie, not Mary Richards, actress Barbara Hale was playing a single working woman on TV.
Hale, now 71, remembers what appealed to her about the role of Della Street, secretary to lawyer Perry Mason on the series that was based on the mysteries by Erle Stanley Gardner.
“When we started (in 1956), it was the beginning of women not working at home. I liked that she was not married. My husband didn’t have to see me every week married to another man, and our children didn’t have to see me mothering other children.
“When (my son) Billy was in the 1st grade, we went to school for the first parent meeting, and on his desk were little projects he’d made-pictures of Daddy and Mommy and his sister and his animals. And underneath my picture-I wish I had it now, but the teacher kept it-he’d written in inch-high block letters, `This is my mom. I love her. She is a secretary.”‘
On Friday, the latest Perry Mason two-hour movie, “The Case of the Telltale Talk Show Host,” will air on NBC, one of seven productions that will carry the courtroom stalwart and his unflappable Girl Friday into 1994.
“I guess I was just meant to be a secretary who doesn’t take shorthand,” she quips. “My assistant wants you to know I’m a lousy typist too-33 words a minute!”
The Emmy award-winning actress is a Hollywood survivor-going into her second half-century in a profession she never dreamed of pursuing. A veteran of the old studio system and of television’s infancy, her co-stars in those early years were household names-Sinatra and Cagney and Stewart and Mitchum-when she was the ingenue.
RKO Studios was her “paid education,” as she puts it, her training ground. She met her husband, actor Bill Williams (who died several months ago), over coffee at the studio commissary.
Today, she still offers ample evidence of the effervescent beauty she was in the ’40s and ’50s-and even earlier, in Rockford High School, when her buddies entered her in a May Queen contest and she won. “I still know them, dear, and we 15 get together every three years. It takes three years to get over the three days we spend together!”
Her career seems to have evolved from being on the right Chicago street corner at the right time.
The daughter of a Rockford horticulturist and a homemaker, Hale (born in DeKalb) was studying at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, living at the Harriet M. McCormick branch of the YWCA and planning a career as a commercial illustrator and portraitist.
One day, as school let out for the summer, she was standing at the corner near the Drake Hotel with a girlfriend who’d come to town for a couple of weeks to look for modeling work. While they were waiting for the bus taking them to the North Side, a car drove up and someone tossed a card at them. It referred them to a modeling agency.
“A couple of weeks later, I went to see my buddies, and I told one of them the story about the card,” she recalls.
“She said, `Barb, you’re kidding! I was sitting in the little coffee shop at work this morning, and a lady came in and sat next to me, because it was the only seat left. She was pouting. I asked if she had a problem, and she said, “Yes, darn it. I have a model agency and I saw this kid on a corner, in a red coat, and can’t track her down. She’s exactly what one of our ad agencies is looking for.” Barb, what coat did you have on that day?
“I said, `My red coat-it’s the only coat I have.’ And she said, `Barb, I think that card was meant for you.”‘
It was. Hale went in to the Seaman Agency, and stopped Connie Seaman in her tracks. “She said, `Oh, my God-honey, don’t move! Al, get over here quick!’ Al came in and said, `It is her! Let’s see-we’ll shape her eyebrows, put on a little more lipstick, pull her hair back … ‘ and I said, `Just a minute, sir-what are we talking about?”‘
Hale was “a green 19” when she began fashion modeling, and after about a year and a half, RKO offered her a six-month tryout. The day after she arrived in Los Angeles, she visited the studio and its casting director, Dick Stockton.
“As I was shaking hands with him, the phone rang. He took the call, and as he listened, he started looking at me. `Yeah, yeah, yeah, just a minute.’ He turned to me and asked, `Honey, can you say a line?’ I said, `I don’t know.’ He said into the phone, `There’s a kid in the office right now. I think she’ll work. I’ll send her right over.’ He told his assistant, `Take her to wardrobe, take her to makeup, take her to Stage 6. One of the kids is sick. We’ve got to have a girl there immediately.’
“It hit every paper the next day. Cinderella story. First day on the lot, she gets-of course they said a starring part. I had one line, but you know about those things.”
Apart from that walk-on, in “Gildersleeve’s Bad Day,” she made her debut in 1944 in “Higher and Higher,” opposite Frank Sinatra.
Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Ginger Rogers and Jane Russell were all at RKO then. So was Burr-who would be her TV series co-star about a dozen years later.
Hale studied dancing and singing at the studio. She began to appear on screen regularly-four movies in 1944, two in 1945-and eventually won leads in such movies as “The Boy With Green Hair,” “The Window,” “Jolson Sings Again” and “The Jackpot,” performing even while pregnant.
“I told Billy (her son, actor William Katt, who starred in the television series “The Greatest American Hero”) he should put on his resume that he was in `The Jackpot’ and `Lorna Doone,’ and he said, `Mother, I wasn’t,’ and I told him, `Oh, yes, you were!”‘
She continued her movie career and was a mainstay of television dramas until 1956, when a producer offered her the Della Street part in the pilot of what turned out to be a 9 1/2-year run. Hale went on to win an Emmy for best dramatic actress for the role in 1959.
“We did 36 shows that first year,” she says. “And we’re still doing it!”
She says that Della “was-and still is, to a great degree-a woman who knew what everybody was thinking. She was informed, and very observant of everything that went on. That was my challenge as an actress-to be a necessary part of the office without being too aggressive. Della was quietly overpowering: She knew when to speak and when to keep her mouth closed.”
Hale sees Della as having remained constant, to an extent. Her task is basically the same. But there have been some subtle emotional changes.
“I think she’s a little more at home, relaxed, showing her knowledge not only of the case, but also of her boss. In the early days, it was all business. Today there’s more of a camaraderie between them, a little more humor and more sensitivity to each other, which comes with years of being side by side.
“She’s trying to see that he stays healthy,” she says. “She’s taking him off coffee.
After nearly 300 episodes, “Perry Mason” folded in 1966.
In the mid-1970s, the show returned briefly with other actors and faded quickly. During the ’70s and early ’80s, Hale worked sporadically. She was in the original “Airport” in 1970, and appeared opposite her son in a 1978 surfing movie, “Big Wednesday.”
In 1985, producer Dean Hargrove asked her what she thought of the idea of a “Perry Mason” reunion show. She told him, “it would be divine, but we are 25 or 30 years older than we were then.” He said the intention was to use them as they were and to bring in a few new young actors to replace cast members William Talman, Ray Collins and William Hopper, who had died.
“Dean said, `There’s a young blond kid in town. I want to talk to him, not his agent. He’s done a series-“The Greatest American Hero.” But I can’t reach him.’
“I said, `Oh, well, that young man is in Kansas City doing “The Music Man” right now, and I can get you in touch with him if you want.’ And Dean asked, `You know him?’ I said, `Dean, I changed that boy’s diapers!’ Billy played in the first nine (Perry Mason) movies, then went on to another series of his own.”
“Perry Mason Returns” in 1985 was a Nielsen triumph, and with Perry stepping down from a judgeship to defend Della against murder charges in the first episode. From then on, the Mason bunch have visited America’s living rooms every few months.
After nearly four decades, Hale says the role of Della still offers unexpected moments.
“This week, at the end of the show, very quietly and very surprisingly, Perry plants one on Della,” Hale says. “It’s a first!”

The sun had only just kissed Princeton awake when Emma Wilson stepped through the large glass doors of her high school. The familiar smell of freshly waxed floors, cheap teenage perfumes, and the bitter tang of teacher coffee lingered in the air. For most students, it was a nightmare. For Emma, it was just another Monday.
She wasn’t a straight-A student, but she wasn’t a troublemaker either. Her teachers liked her—sharp, observant, and always quick with a dry comment that suspiciously echoed Dr. House’s best lines. Her classmates liked her too, mostly because she never tried too hard to be liked. And, unlike others, she was never embarrassed by who her dad was. If anything, she was proud of it.
This morning, like most mornings, she sipped her second coffee before the first bell had even rung—courtesy of her dad, Dr. James Wilson, who had kissed her on the forehead before handing her a thermos with her name on it and dropping her off.
“You’re getting addicted,” he’d warned.
“And you’re enabling me,” she’d replied, pecking his cheek in return. “You should be ashamed, Doctor.”
After school, Emma didn’t go to the mall or track practice like most kids her age. She took the bus to Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. Her second home. Maybe even her real home.
She loved walking through the hospital halls, weaving between nurses and residents, slipping behind desks and greeting the staff like old friends. Most people didn’t blink when they saw her anymore. Dr. Wilson’s daughter was as much a part of the hospital as the smell of hand sanitizer.
“Look who’s back!” Brenda at reception grinned when she walked in. “Little Miss Wilson—today with or without gossip?”
“Depends on your bribe,” Emma grinned back. “Got cookies?”
“Only if you tell me whether your dad and Dr. House are actually living together now. The nurses have a betting pool.”
Emma groaned. “House basically lives on our couch. That doesn’t count.”
“So… yes. Knew it!”
She rode the elevator up to the fourth floor, turned left down a corridor of glass offices, and headed straight for the one with Dr. James Wilson – Oncology on the door. She didn’t bother knocking.
Wilson was behind his desk, buried in a patient file, but the moment he saw her, his face lit up like a kid at Christmas.
“You survived! I thought school swallowed you whole.”
“Barely,” Emma said, flopping onto the sofa with a dramatic sigh. “We had a bio test and a debate on the American tax system. I’d have preferred a colonoscopy.”
Wilson chuckled and got up, walking over to press a kiss to her forehead. “You’re such a drama queen. Just like House.”
“I’ll take that as a compliment,” she smirked.
“It wasn’t meant to be.”
“It was,” came a new voice from the doorway.
House.
He leaned against the frame, cane in hand, smirking like he’d been summoned by sarcasm itself. The ever-present blazer hung loosely over his T-shirt, and he was giving Emma that look—half fondness, half suspicion.
“Let me guess,” House said. “You either insulted a classmate or told your teacher his PowerPoint looked like a crime scene.”
“Both,” Emma replied sweetly. “And I shamed someone for using Comic Sans.”
House gave an approving nod. “There may be hope for your generation after all.”
“There isn’t,” Wilson muttered, moving a folder aside. “Not if she keeps adopting your TV habits.”
“General Hospital is a classic,” Emma said defensively.
“I regret so much,” Wilson sighed, shaking his head.
Later that afternoon, while Wilson was in a meeting, Emma snuck off to Dr. Cameron’s office. She loved spending time with Cameron—smart, warm, and always willing to let Emma peek into a case.
“You want the inside scoop again?” Cameron asked with a smile.
“Only if it’s not gross. Last time gave me worm nightmares.”
From across the room, Chase chimed in, “Then you’re in the wrong department. House lives for gross.”
Foreman entered with a muffin. “If you eat this, you’re reading up on septic arthritis.”
Emma grabbed the muffin without hesitation. “Deal. But I’m not writing a paper.”
That was a typical day for Emma. School, hospital, a little sarcasm with House, warmth with her dad, and some medical mystery on the side. It was her rhythm, her routine, her happy place.
It was a quiet Monday.
A good Monday.
But no one knew it would be the last good Monday for a long time.

Emma kept her rhythm going like a well-rehearsed performance. School in the morning, hospital in the afternoon, dinner with her dad or pizza with House in front of a badly dubbed French horror film. She laughed at Wilson’s terrible cooking and rolled her eyes at House’s melodramatic piano playing. She made sarcastic comments during hospital rounds and debated diagnoses with Foreman like a trainee doctor.
No one suspected a thing.
Except House.
He didn’t say anything—yet. But he noticed. House always noticed.
It started on Tuesday, when Emma trailed into Wilson’s office slightly later than usual. Her walk was a touch slower, her smile just a bit delayed. She sank onto the couch with a faint sigh, pressing a hand against her stomach for a brief moment before quickly shifting it away when Wilson looked up.
“You okay?” he asked casually, glancing up from his paperwork.
“Fine,” Emma said instantly, too fast. “Just tired. We had P.E. today, and Coach apparently thinks we’re all training for the Olympics.”
Wilson chuckled, satisfied with the answer. “Want me to write you a note next time?”

By Wednesday, the symptoms had worsened.
The stomach ache came in sharp waves now, pulsing behind her ribs like something coiled and waiting. Sometimes her hands trembled for no reason. Once, she dropped her coffee cup. Blamed it on her phone buzzing.
And the fatigue—that was the hardest to hide. It clung to her like static. She could feel it in her legs when she walked through the halls, in her arms when she tried to lift her school bag. But Emma was used to hiding things. She had been good at it for years. And this wasn’t something she was going to dump on her dad’s plate.
Wilson had been so happy lately. Relaxed. He was laughing more, sleeping more. Ever since his last brutal case ended with a patient surviving, it was like he could finally breathe again. Emma wasn’t going to take that away from him.

“Blame House. He’s a terrible influence.”
Thursday night, things cracked.
House was over for dinner. Wilson had cooked—an actual meal that didn’t come from a microwave—and Emma had curled up on the couch with a blanket around her shoulders. House made a snide comment about her looking like a 90-year-old grandma.
“Better than looking like a divorced raccoon,” Emma fired back, eyes glinting.
Wilson burst out laughing. House simply smirked, but he didn’t miss the way her hand trembled when she reached for her glass of water.
He said nothing.
But later, while Wilson was washing up and Emma was pretending to do homework at the kitchen table, House leaned in behind her.
“You ever plan on telling your dad that you’re falling apart?”

“I don’t want to worry him.”
“You think hiding something potentially serious is going to not worry him when he finds out?”
“He won’t find out,” she whispered. “It’ll pass. It always does.”
House’s expression didn’t change. He didn’t argue, didn’t press. He just gave a shrug and limped away, but something sharp lingered in his eyes.
Friday, Emma collapsed.
Not fully. Not in front of anyone. She waited until she was alone in the staff bathroom on the third floor, between Cameron’s office and the clinic. She’d just finished laughing at a joke Chase made and felt fine—until the world tilted and her knees gave out.
She managed to catch herself before she hit the ground. She slid down the wall and sat on the cold tile floor, her heart racing, hands shaking uncontrollably.
Her stomach ached. Her chest felt tight. There were black spots dancing at the edges of her vision.
And still… she didn’t cry.
She breathed.
Slow, careful breaths.
In. Out. In. Out.
“I’m okay,” she murmured. “I’m okay. It’s fine.”
She stayed there for ten minutes. Then she stood, fixed her hair in the mirror, and walked out like nothing happened.
But when she passed House in the hallway later that day, his eyes locked with hers, and for the first time since Monday, she couldn’t look away fast enough.
He knew.

House didn’t do subtle. He didn’t do gentle. He did pressure. He did mind games. He did war.
So on Monday morning, when Emma arrived at Princeton-Plainsboro looking just a little too pale and a little too quiet, he didn’t ask how she was feeling. That would’ve been too easy.
Instead, he stood just inside Wilson’s office with his usual cup of coffee—technically Wilson’s coffee—and said:
“Tell me, Wilson. If your sixteen-year-old daughter were a patient, and she presented with fatigue, tremors, intermittent nausea, and visible pallor, would you run bloodwork or just shove her into a school bus and hope for the best?”
Emma, who was sprawled on the couch with a book, didn’t flinch. She turned a page. “That’s a really creepy hypothetical, House.”
Wilson glanced up from his computer. “You’re in a mood.”
“Always am.”
House limped over, his cane tapping in slow rhythm. “I’m just curious. Let’s say she’s also had at least two near-syncopal episodes in the past week, though she’s been very careful to avoid collapsing in public. She's good at timing.”
Emma finally looked up, her eyes calm, a faint challenge behind them. “Sounds like you’re projecting.”
“I never project,” House said. “I deflect. Big difference.”
“She’s fine,” Wilson said, only half-listening. “Probably just a virus going around.”
“Mmm.” House sipped his coffee, never taking his eyes off Emma. “A virus that causes abdominal pain and intentional avoidance of parental concern. Fascinating new strain.”
Emma stared right back. “Maybe it’s called the ‘House Flu.’ Comes with paranoia, dramatic monologuing, and an overwhelming need to be right.”
Wilson snorted. “Okay, that one was good.”
House didn’t smile. He just narrowed his eyes. “You’re hiding something.”
Emma stood. “I’m hiding nothing. You’re just bored.”
House stepped closer. “Boredom doesn’t make your hands shake.”
She crossed her arms, jaw tight. “I’m fine. I’m eating. I’m sleeping. I’m going to school. I’m doing my homework.”
“Except when you pass out in bathrooms,” he muttered.
Her silence lasted a beat too long.
“I slipped,” she said at last. “The floor was wet.”
House raised an eyebrow. “Did the floor also explain the dark circles under your eyes? Or the way you’re holding your side every time you breathe deep?”
Emma said nothing. Her gaze shifted slightly, just enough to betray her.
Wilson was now fully watching the exchange, confusion furrowing his brow. “What’s going on?”
“Nothing,” Emma said quickly.
“Something,” House replied.
Emma turned on her heel. “I’m going to get a muffin.”
“Get bloodwork while you’re at it,” House called after her. “CBC, liver panel, ANA test. You know, for fun.”
She didn’t respond. The door clicked shut behind her.
She avoided House for the rest of the day. Which, frankly, was a challenge, since he seemed to pop up everywhere.
In the clinic hallway.
In the cafeteria.
In the break room with a stolen granola bar and a knowing stare.
He didn’t say anything. He just looked.
It was worse than words.
By Thursday, she snapped.
“I’m not your puzzle,” she hissed at him when they crossed paths outside the elevators.
“No, you’re worse,” House replied calmly. “Because you’re trying to be boring. And I don’t do boring.”
“You think everything’s a game.”
“No. But I think you know exactly what’s wrong with you. And you’re hoping it goes away before I prove you wrong.”
Emma glared at him. Her voice dropped to a whisper. “I’m not doing this with you.”
House leaned in, just enough to make it uncomfortable. “Then don’t. But sooner or later, you’ll be too sick to pretend. And when that happens, Wilson’s going to wonder why his best friend knew something was wrong... and didn’t stop it.”
Her breath caught in her throat. Just for a second. Just enough.
Then she shoved past him and walked away.
That night, House stood outside Wilson’s apartment with takeout in one hand and the unsettling weight of dread in the other.
Emma opened the door.
She looked tired. She smiled anyway.
“Did you bring extra fries, or are we fighting?”
House held up the bag. “Peace offering.”
She stepped aside to let him in. Wilson was setting the table. The lights were warm. The TV was playing some old sitcom. It felt like every other evening.
But it wasn’t.
Because something was coming.
House could feel it.
And so could Emma.

I don’t usually make vent posts like this but I need to scream into the void about this right now and my friends don’t want to hear it anymore.
Tomorrow I have a doctor’s appointment about an hour’s drive away. Unfortunately, I don’t have a car because I just paid for school and insurance would tear me apart.
Outside my building is a train track that goes right up to the edge of the property. It’s hidden by a fence, but every time a train goes past it’s like a continuous rolling clap of thunder that you feel in your inner ear. Naturally, one would assume that there would be a train station in town. One would be dead wrong. There isn’t a train station for miles in any direction, and the only way in and out of town is through the highway.
Looking up bus routes on google maps shows me several with the same rough timing: SEVEN HOURS. Somehow, taking the bus is more time than it would take to bike all the way there (six hours). Even with all the stops a bus makes, you would assume that once it got on the highway there wouldn’t be much of a difference. But if it takes me FOURTEEN HOURS to see the only doctor that does HRT nearby, then that’s simply not viable. I have free time, but not that much. Not that much.
Of course, I could take an Uber. At this point it seems like the best option. Pay hundreds of dollars for a drive that would normally cost <$100 for gas, while stranding a complete stranger in an entirely different town. An Uber driver once told me that if they drove out of a certain area, they would have to drive all the way back to it before they could pick up more riders, which wastes their time and their money. If I order an Uber, I’m asking two separate strangers to make a two hour round trip drive in which they’re only allowed one rider at a time. Just an absolute dogshit thing to do to another person.
I live in Ontario, which is supposed to be Canada’s number one industrial powerhouse. We have the highest population of any province in the country, mostly in one dense area along the US border. Every year the government spends millions of dollars to maintain the roads and highways connecting all these places. And not one, NOT ONE train station in my whole fucking town? You’re telling me there’s enough money for the roads and highways and all the streetlights and fuel for transport trucks and construction. But it’s just not in the budget to lay down some fucking tracks and make commuting without a car fast and affordable? Really?
I guess if everyone just buys a car then that’s good for oil companies and insurance companies and car companies and… you know, all the people that get rich off covering everything in pavement and waiting for people to die. But for people like me who don’t have a car and need to get somewhere an hour away? Well, I guess we can just go fuck ourselves. It’s our fault for not having enough money to buy our own personal 3000 pound death machine.
Look. I get it. People like driving their little metal boxes around. It’s fun. Whatever. But human beings have been laying railroads (not like that) for literally hundreds of years. The industry my country loves so much was built on railroads. We KNOW that trains work, we KNOW that they’re fast and easy and they get people places on time, and we KNOW that they can transport WAY more people than a highway while taking up way less space. SO WHY THE FUCK IS THERE NO TRAIN STATION IN MY TOWN. WHY IS THE ROAD THE ONLY OPTION. WHY AM I STUCK USING BUSES AND RIDESHARING AND SHITTY HALF-MEASURES TO GET AROUND THIS OBVIOUS GAPING HOLE IN OUR PROVINCE’S AWFUL INFRASTRUCTURE. STOP ADDING MORE LANES TO THE GOD DAMN HIGHWAYS AND GIVE US A WORKING TRANSIT SYSTEM. JESUS FUCKING CHRIST.
