Avengers #213 (Shooter/Hall, Nov 1981). The infamous “Hank Pym assaults his wife” issue is an expectedly tough read. Even with a summary of Pym’s checkered psychological history, this doesn’t feel like a flawed man facing his demons — this is just a raw, nasty tale of a founding Avenger who plunges into paranoid psychosis. Tony muses that Pym’s legacy is inextricably linked with the Avengers, which kinda damns the whole team as they’re powerless to curtail his abuse. I’m not saying that superhero comics shouldn’t tackle real problems. I’m just saying this attempt is graceless and cruel. After Carol Danvers’ departure, an icky pattern is emerging…
