Please note that I took most of my information from online, and I didn't personally read/ watch everything, so there may be some mistakes. Also, some of the not-canon characters are very likely aspec, but just not confirmed. And especially if they say/ do really obviously aro/ ace stuff, I wasn't sure if it's enough to put them in the "confirmed" category. (e.g. Saiki literally said he isn't attracted to anyone regardless of gender, and never wants to be in a relationship. But there are still people who doubt his aroace-ness. (And at this point I don't see how it could be anything but aphobia, to deny the mere possibility of him being aroace so vehemently lol.) )
Also: Sadly, I couldn't find good aro-allo characters except Claire/ Claude from "baker thief". There is tons of good a-spec representation in that book (also more side characters that I didn't mention here), but I couldn't really find any fan-art. So then I just slapped the entire book cover on the collage.

When you made your Timmy determination post, why did you chose the other soul colors for each character? I know why for some, but maybe you have some insight.
OMG I was waiting for this question so much, thank you!
So, I gonna do all of them in list.
Jenny: Honestly for her it was a bit of a cast-off, because I barely saw a couple of episodes when I was very young, but I feel like 'Patience' fits Jenny quite well. Also, she has needed a lot of patience to be the only girl on the team (especially a team with Zim and Timmy).
Zim and Dib: Here I was a bit hesitant and for a moment I was going to place them together since for me, they both represent both 'Integrity' and 'Perseverance' in the aspect that they are both true to themselves no matter what and at the same time they don't give up on their goals no matter what the obstacles are. But mixing it up a bit with the fanon (and some personal headcanons) I thought Dib earned the position of 'Perseverance' by continuing in his work to save the earth, no matter who it is against or how it is at the same time, Zim remains who he is regardless of being called flawed or useless.
Manny: I think this one is pretty easy, Manny is without a doubt one of the bravest characters. He would stand face to face with danger, even if the fight is not in his favor in order to protect his friends and family. There is a chapter where he cuts his own hand in a fight, it's clear that he was scared but he didn't let it defeat him and did what was necessary to defeat his opponent, to me that's a great example of bravery.
SpongeBob: there is no kinder character in the nicktoons universe than bob, always ready to offer a helping hand. Yet he will not hesitate when it comes to protecting those he loves. I compare him quite a bit to Fluttershy from my little pony, as they are both kind and friendly characters, but that doesn't make them weak.
Danny: This was born out of the headcanon where one of Danny's obsessions as a ghost is to be a hero/protect others. To me, Danny is someone who wants the best for everyone, both humans and ghosts, he doesn't want humans to catch ghosts and do with them what they want as much as he doesn't want ghosts to hurt humans. He seeks equality for both sides and for everyone to be treated fairly.
Jimmy: Technically, he also represents 'Determination' but in a more intellectual way, as he has never stopped in the pursuit of knowledge. Although I also see him as a bit of a mix of all of the above, which adds a lot to his role as a leader in the team (kind of like a Twilight Sparkle? (yes, I like mlp a lot)). But if I had to give it a more accurate name, I would use 'Knowledge' or even 'Curiosity'.
Timmy: Well, I'm not going to hide that this he's my favorite. I know Timmy isn't the best and has done many not-so-nice things, but something I will always love about him is the fact that he seeks to fix his mistakes, when it matters most he stops at nothing to save the day, learns from his bad decisions, and is even capable of recognizing when he is wrong. I tried to reflect those same things in the clips I chose: when he puts all his effort into charades even though everyone told him he was bad at it, choosing to stay with Vicky as a babysitter just to keep his fairy godparents, giving his all in the channel hunters battle, and his determination to rescue Wanda and fight against Crocker to save everyone. And although I really wanted to add something else to describe him, 'Determination' is undoubtedly one of his best qualities.
Again, thanks for asking and for being interested in my silly and endless lore.

For age reference

Little warning: My first language isn't English, I apologize in case something doesn't make sense.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When Manny received an invitation from Jimmy Neutron to be a part of their interdimensional club or whatever it was, he was certain nothing interesting would come out of it. Sure the idea of different dimensions and adventures was luring, but he had enough of those at home, what could they offer him that he didnt already have? The only reason he ended up agreeing to meet them was to reject the invitation properly, he wasn’t interested at all… At least that’s what he told himself, yet regardless of his feelings on the matter, he had a sudden change of heart upon meeting the team members, or rather, one of them.
Jimmy Neutron was the brain of the team, clearly, he had a laboratory, a robot dog named Goddard, and he was the one who gave him the device to travel through universes, he was interesting, but not the reason for his change of heart.
Timmy Turner was the youngest team member, only by a year, but still; he had these two creatures following him around, “fairies”, he said, Manny wasn’t entirely sure if he believed that, but it was interesting nonetheless… still not the reason though.
Next, and this one was a surprise, a talking sponge… Spongebob Squarepants, the oldest (for real?) member of the team, with a distinguished laughter and a love for his job and jellyfishing, whatever that was; as fun as it sounded to meet a talking sponge, he still wasn't the reason for himself to be debating the decision so much.
Danny Fenton, now that was the guy, half ghost half human, a strange accident made him like that, and his powers were amazing for sure, but what drew his attention the most was just… him. There was something about him that felt kind of magnetic, and he wanted to be with him, listen to his stories and, who knows, fight some bad guys together? These guys were all heroes, right? He could do that.
Danny was undeniably fun, but there was more to him, one could say he was… cute. Especially when he got nervous. He didn’t see that shy bit of him often, even after spending some time together, Danny carried himself with confidence most of the time, maybe because he had nothing to hide from his friends (which now included him), maybe that was just the way he was; he’d only seen Danny nervous two or three times.
The first time was when he accidentally broke one of Jimmy’s inventions and didn’t know how to tell him, he’d run to him to ask for help trying to fix it… needless to say that didn’t work well and he had to tell Jimmy about it, he’d been pretty nervous about that, and terribly apologetic too; he blushed embarrassed about his uncharacteristic clumsiness when he told Jimmy how he’d broken his invention.
Then there was the time when he lost his fish net the day Spongebob asked them to go jellyfishing with him, apparently, the two of them were pretty close friends and he didn’t want to hurt his feelings or fail him in an activity the sponge seemed to enjoy a lot, but when he was unable to find it, he’d sheepishly asked Spongebob if he had a spare for him.
The last time was something else though. They’d been chatting for what felt like hours, just having a nice time sharing stories of their fights or complaining about more mundane things such as their schools. Everything was normal up till the moment in which their hands accidentally made contact; Manny wasn’t one to shy away from contact, especially not from a cute guy, but Danny had blushed on the spot and his hand went ghost, it wouldn’t have been so funny if Danny hadn’t been leaning his weight on the table on it, the poor guy almost hit his face against it, then he tried to play it cool and stand up to go get sodas, but his legs were the next thing to go ghost, the next thing he knew his pants were on the floor. Now, as funny as that was, he didn’t find this as cute as the other times, Danny wasn’t his usual type of nervous, he was mortified and Manny found himself immediately disliking that ashamed look in his face, especially after Danny ran away.
Manny was about to go after him, but just then the new recruit, Jenny, came in with the rest of the team and he was forced to stay to meet her and chat with everyone, although he couldn’t say he paid attention, his whole mind was on Danny and what to do to make him feel better and understand he wouldn’t have laughed at him.
As it got late everyone said their goodbyes and returned to their own universes, but Danny was nowhere to be found, it wouldn’t surprise Manny if he’d decided to go home right after that incident, so he didn’t question it and returned to Miracle City. For a second he considered asking someone for advice, maybe Frida, his best friend would surely help out! Or his dad! Hell, he’d even take advice from Black Cuervo on this one as long as it helped him find a way to cheer Danny up… he quickly decided against it though, what could he tell them? That the cute guy he’d been chatting with suddenly lost his pants? Hell nah, at best they’d laugh or focus on the unnecessary details, at worst they’d misinterpret everything and it’d become awkward, not to mention he didn’t feel comfortable outing this situation to anyone, he didn’t think Danny would appreciate it, so it was up to him and to him alone to find the solution to the issue at hand.
His thoughts must have summoned Black Cuervo because that same night she decided to attack, and it was up to El Tigre to take care of everything. Thankfully, his fight against the villain brought some ideas and clarity to his situation.
Who would’ve thought, he chuckled to himself, Black Cuervo actually helped with this, and I didn’t even have to ask.
No longer than a day had passed and getting the gift was far easier than remembering the universe and city Danny came from, he was used to hanging out with him in Jimmy’s universe after all, but Danny had told him about his universe. Chingada madre, what was the name? Started with A… ability? Army?... Amity! Amity Park (what kind of name was that for a city?), if he remembered correctly, it was time for a little expedition out of this world for El Tigre.
Jimmy said the transporting device would take them somewhere near to the universe resident’s base in order to avoid issues in case someone was there, which meant he wouldn’t appear in Danny’s house, but close enough, no problem, he was ready to look for hours if needed, so knowing he’d be nearby would save him a lot of time.
Crossing the portal, he was greeted with another universe, different from his own and Jimmy’s, whose he’d gotten used to by now, high buildings and many houses raised before him as he came out from the alleyway in which he’d appear. Huh… Well, with so many houses how was he supposed to find Danny’s if the only clue was that it was near? He took back what he said earlier, this was going to be a pain in the ass.
Manny wasn’t particularly patient, so the idea of walking around until luck smiled at him and helped him find Danny’s place was giving him a headache; this was a job for El Tigre! Besides, in the worst case scenario he was sure Danny would end up finding out about a dude in a tiger suit leaping around if he didn’t find him first, and then Danny would find him; nothing could possibly go wrong.
Or that’s what he thought.
Of course, he jinxed it.
After a while looking for his friend, he found himself muttering and groaning because Danny just was nowhere to be found, and through his mind ran the possibility that Danny actually knew he was there and was just keeping himself invisible to avoid him. It was unlike him, but at the rate things were going Manny was willing to entertain the idea, if only to get that out of his head as soon as possible.
“Alright,” he took a deep breath and sat down on the roof of the building he had just landed on, “Danny, if you can hear me, I really need to talk to you right now, hombre!”
…
…
Nothing.
Of course, if Danny was avoiding him he wouldn’t reply, but-
A shudder ran through his body, the ambience growing colder than it was before; Danny had given him this feeling many times before, that was how one felt when a ghost was close. He sighed relieved, figuring if there was any ghost nearby it had to be Danny, and that meant he had listened to him. He stood up and smiled, preparing the little speech he had rehearsed for this moment, but when he turned around, whoever that was, it wasn’t Danny.
“Danny Phantom?” He asked with a smirk, “You know him, boy?”
“What’s it to ya?” Manny hissed in response, getting ready for a fight.
“You must be one of his friends! Oh, this must be my lucky day! Finally, that child will learn a thing or two about respecting elder ghosts!”
Before he could react, the ghost had a tight grip on him, lifting him off his feet and flying away from the roof; Manny tried almost every trick he’d learned as El Tigre to free himself, but there was no use, he couldn’t touch the damn spirit with his claws; for a second he considered summoning the Ancient tiger spirit, guessing that if anything could touch a spirit it just had to be another, but as soon as he was to try that theory the man he was looking for appeared.
“Well, well, well! If it isn’t Danny Phantom! I knew you wouldn’t resist coming for your friend!”
“Let him go!”
“As you wish, child!”
Being dropped from the sky wouldn’t be funny if he was a normal guy, but Manny Rivera was no normal guy, he was sure he could land relatively safely and Danny would take care of the ghost no problem, but he supposed it would be impossible for someone like Danny to ignore one of his friends falling, because the next thing he knew, he was caught by the halfa.
“Y’know, I could’ve handled that. Thanks though.”
“What the hell are you even doing here?!”
“Geez, I’m glad to see you too!”
“Are you boys done chatting?” The ghost, now angry at being ignored launched itself to attack Danny.
“Okay, we’ll talk about this later, I’ll take care of this loser first!”
Earlier in their relationship, Manny had wanted to fight side by side with him, but being held as Danny took care of everything wasn’t exactly how he pictured it, he’d imagined it more… epic, having each other’s backs as they defeated some baddie; granted, this was cool too, he could see Danny use his ghost powers from pretty close, but he wasn’t contributing much to the fight, and he was sure Frida would laugh if she could see him like this, it was a bit embarrassing.
By the end of the battle the ghost was captured in a thermos and Danny was pretty much unscathed, with only a few scratches to worry about. The two landed in the nearby roof and transformed back, finally, Manny could talk with Danny.
“For the record, getting kidnapped wasn’t in my plans when I came.”
“Why did you come?” He didn’t sound upset, which Manny counted as a small victory, but he still seemed pretty ashamed about what had happened.
“Hey…” Manny held his hand and offered a smile, “listen, about what happened; there’s nothing to be ashamed of, ‘kay? I wasn’t going to laugh.”
“Bullshit.”
“Aw, c’mon, man, give me some credit, I really wasn’t! I was going to tell you that, but you ran away and then the new team member came and I couldn’t follow after you.”
“… Alright… so you just came to tell me that?”
“Not exactly,” he chuckled as he fished from his pocket the gift he’d brought for him, placing it in Danny’s hand, “cool, right?”
“… It’s a belt buckle.”
“It is! A bit like my own, but it has a P, y’know, for Phantom. Made it myself. It’s not magical like mine, but I thought it might come in handy.”
“You made me a belt buckle?”
“Yeah! Like I said, I really wasn’t going to laugh, but you seemed mortified, and I thought this might help a bit.”
“… Huh…”
“What? You don’t like it?”
“No, it’s not that! This is just… it’s pretty thoughtful, I don’t know what to say! Thank you…”
Ah… that was a different kind of blush, one he hadn’t seen on Danny…
This was by far his favorite one…
I've been feeling really insecure about an oc of mine that has an old TV head and another one that has a computer screen head because I feel like people might compare them to Vox from hazbin hotel but then I realized something. Why is Vox the only hh or hb character that has a object-like face? I can't remember a single other character that doesn't have a human or animal like head, let alone a literal object. In retrospect it feels like Vox doesn't really fit in the universe at all. It feels like she stole the design from something else. Maybe she was just inspired by something (it's ok to be inspired by other characters, my main inspirations were Karen from SpongeBob and that one movie from 2005, Robots) but it really feels like he is out of place. Then again maybe I'm wrong and there are a lot of other characters similar to him in universe and I just didn't see them.
It wouldn't be out of character for her. Regardless of where Vox came from, Viv doesn't own the concept of TV heads...be proud of your OCs and don't let anyone give you shit for them!
⊹₊⟡⋆ nuno gallego + he/him ⊹₊⟡⋆ blasting i am a god by kanye west through their airpods is preston pruitt. oh , you don’t know them ? they’re the 23 year old ceo who just went viral for dumping a lukewarm cup of coffee on an intern (allegedly!!!). yup , the one that drives a rolls royce phantom . i hear they’re pretty diligent, but others have claimed that they’re quite volatile. that makes sense , considering they’re often labeled as the green-eyed monster.
stats:
full name: preston reginald pruitt
nicknames: prefers preston or mr. pruitt, will probably be snippy about it if anyone he's not especially close to tries anything else with him
gender: cis man
pronouns: he/him
sexuality: bisexual, biromantic
age: 23
date of birth: june 10th, 2001
zodiac sign: gemini
height: 5'8"
occupation: nepo baby ceo of pruitt yacht sales
interests: interior design, mixology, watching old game shows (a pastime shared with his favorite nanny growing up), perfectly tailored suits, getting his way
visual inspo:
pinterest board: https://www.pinterest.com/aron_piper/oc-preston/ home: the styling of his mansion is very much this kind of vibe (i'm not too sure on exactly what the homes they live in here look like, but the decorating of his would be very similar to this) office: similar sort of look to the styling of his home, something along these lines. as mentioned above, he has an affinity for interior design, and would have worked closely with a decorator to get everything to his standards - regardless of the cost.
resembles:
scar (lion king), patrick bateman (american psycho), regina george (mean girls), hunter clarington (glee), dennis reynolds (it’s always sunny in philadelphia), light yagami (death note), sebastian valmont (cruel intentions), stewie griffin (family guy), plankton (spongebob), tashi duncan (challengers), lucille bluth (arrested development)
mini bio: tw - drug addiction of a family member
for as long as he can remember, preston has lived in the shadow of his older brother, playing second fiddle to a man, who, in his opinion, was totally incompetent, too focused on the dollar bill at the end of his nose to properly run the prestigious corporation that is pruitt yacht sales. despite it not being his birthright, preston believed he was the one destined to take over, going so far as to graduate from yale with a business degree to make sure he’d be ready – as well as sabotaging his brother’s newfound sobriety the night before his father was due to announce who would be taking over the company post his upcoming retirement. finally, he’s at the top, where he belongs, in charge of a multimillion dollar company, with little care for who he had to step on to get there.
family:
ward pruitt (father)
sabine pruitt (mother)
pierce pruitt (older brother, age 29)
peter pruitt (younger brother, age 17)
paisley pruitt (younger sister, age 16)
wanted connections:
older brother (m) - they've never been particularly close, but i'm assuming things would have only gotten worse after preston stole his ceo title (regardless of whether or not the brother actually knows the reasoning behind it yet)
ride or die (m/f/nb) - best friend, lowkey would love a sebastian/kathryn from cruel intentions kind of vibe (fully platonic or otherwise) but definitely open to other dynamics for sure!
frat brother (m) - he went to yale university; i don't have any sort of specific/actually existing fraternity in mind, it would just be a fictional one, definitely snobby, old money, legacy vibes (ik the odds of another muse already in play here having also attended yale/at the same time as preston/& could be in the same frat as him are pretty low so i'll most likely be sending a wanted connection into the main for this one, but just in case anyone was already thinking about bringing in another muse or hasn't fully fleshed out your character's educational backstory just yet, i figured i'd put this here!)
& friends with benefits, hookups (as in, fwb without the friendship), friends in general, family friends, exes, cousins, gym buddies, clients (those he's done business with in the past / potentially an influencer who has some sort of ongoing deal with the company?), next-door neighbor, rivals, enemies, ex-friends, one night-stand gone wrong, unknown half-sibling, younger siblings (down for changing their ages to make them work as playable muses here!), - all pretty self explanatory, and all open to muses of any gender ! i'm also more than down for filling any connections you guys are seeking / stuff not listed here !
taken connections:
everett finch - frenemies with benefits
imara gill - unlikely friends/drinking buddies
noa barclay - ride or die
sebastian guerra - one-sided (preston's side) rivalry
victoire grimaldi - fake friendship (preston feigns warmth towards her out of fear of pissing off a member of royalty)
wesley levine - ex-friend/one night stand gone wrong
zaire solace - preston takes advantage of his generosity and uses him as a makeshift personal assistant
Welp, here we go. Skydance and Paramount. Looking to merge. Mega-conglomerates continue to eat each other and mutate...
Of course this will mean lots of layoffs, probably some tax write-offs, too. Whole changes in the flow, divisions affected, etc. Reports say that David Ellison, Skydance leader, will pursue *$2 billion* in cuts...
Skydance Animation likely becomes a bigger key player now. I'd imagine future films of theirs, after SPELLBOUND debuts on Netflix, go theatrical. Hopefully it remains separate from Paramount Animation, who have a chunk of projects of their own in the works. It could be a DreamWorks and Illumination situation, a WDAS and Pixar situation, you get the idea? No combining, please. They can totally make films independent of each other.
Alarmingly, Ellison supposedly wants to merge Skydance Animation with Nickelodeon, which I think is a grossly irresponsible idea. Nickelodeon is one of the most important cornerstones of Western TV animation spanning decades. Regardless of where they're at today, to have them be to diluted into some hybrid muck just isn't to my liking. And I'm sure it's not to a lot of other peoples' liking, either.
Hey did you know that Steve Jobs, upon The Walt Disney Company's acquisition of Pixar in early 2006, suggested closing down WDAS and having Pixar just be Disney's single animation studio? In a move that was actually a good decision, John Lasseter vetoed that idea. Now Lasseter runs Skydance Animation, and if they merge with Nick... Sheesh, him having control over the likes of SpongeBob and such? Please no.
The only good thing to come from this, I feel, is if Skydance Animation's movies go theatrical... That could mean Brad Bird's 2D more "grown-up" RAY GUNN could get... A theatrical release. Which probably wouldn't move the needle for 2D animated features anyhow, but it would at least be nice.
Like most acquisitions, it shouldn't have to have been a shitstorm that affects so many people and their projects. I get that the whole Paramount thing is a long and complicated web, and they needed some kind of help, and that there was no good option available, but... That it has to come to that, it's quite telling. Really.
If you think about it... The movie giants have largely been distilled into clusters.
Disney and 20th Century. MGM and Amazon. Warner Bros. and Discovery. Comcast and Universal. Lionsgate and Summit...
Paramount and Skydance.
What's outside of that? A24, NEON, Bleecker Street... Off the top of my head.
Anyways, I hope for the best for the crews that could be affected.
I think you might have taken my point a bit too seriously. I'm not expecting anything specific from the duffers, if I were that desperate, I could just use my imagination. So no, I really don't care that much. I was simply pointing out a possible direction they might take and how the rating could influence certain creative decisions. But let's be real, your guess is as good as mine. There's no way to say with absolute certainty how they’ll handle it, and I'm not going to stake a firm position on that. Post-production is a highly dynamic process, and films often evolve significantly during that phase.
A children's show is something that has a target audience of children. Stranger Things has never been and never will be that. Child leads does NOT make a childrens show, and if it did, then if anything, the first season would be the most 'children's show' season of all.
I’m not disagreeing with you here but the thing is, When starting a project, you can have a specific target audience in mind, but generally speaking, it doesn't always work that way. As a scriptwriter, you might write a gay love story, and if it resonates with queer audiences, that's great. But true creative fulfillment often comes when your work transcends its intended demographic and is appreciated by a much broader audience, not just those within the expected niche. That’s why I said the duffers didn’t intend for ST to be a kids' show, but it organically became one. They didn’t anticipate such a huge following among younger audiences, but they obviously wouldn't see it as a bad thing, it's a blessing in disguise. However, that doesn't mean the show's subtext was designed to be 'kid-friendly.' Take '80s kids' movies as a reference, many of them, like Labyrinth or Never ending story, have bizarre and often unsettling undertones, much like ST. Even Alice in wonderland and Peter pan carry subtexts that, when viewed through a modern lens, can feel disturbingly predatory, especially given Lewis Carroll’s background. The same logic applies to children's media in general. Many shows marketed toward kids contain themes, humor, or subplots clearly designed for adults, anime is a prime example, and even Spongebob Squarepants falls into that category. So who exactly is the target audience in cases like these? It’s not always clear-cut. The fact remains, kids do watch ST, and the showrunners are fully aware of that. They understand that maintaining that younger audience within the ST universe is beneficial, whether creatively or commercially. And if that means making strategic content edits to keep that demographic engaged, they’ll likely do so, whether for better or worse.
I don't think anyone is saying that the show was ever pitched with queer themes as a major selling point though. Your original point was wondering if they will tone down s5 sexual content for a TV-14 rating. Let's not forget that sexual content is very common for a 15 rating (the second-lowest in the UK). Plenty of films with loving or lighthearted sex and nudity have been rated 15, because unless the sex becomes sexual violence, there's no need for it to be an 18 (which is the equivalent of an R-rating in the US). Heck, Titanic, with its unforgettable steamy intimacy and sex scene, is a 12 rating! Compare that to films that use sex as violence or horror, like Basic Instinct, which is an 18. Even some sex-horror films like Jennifer's Body is a 15.
I didn't use examples because ratings vary significantly across different countries for the same film. Therefore, ratings are highly subjective. if you examine how MCU films are edited to comply with rating requirements worldwide and compare the cuts released in Europe and America with those in the Asia-Pacific region, then juxtapose them with South Asian cuts, you’ll observe differences. Besides, queer storylines are always handled differently, regardless of how straightforward they may be. In many countries, films featuring queer content often don’t receive a theatrical release. It’s not just about having an explicitly queer narrative, sometimes even a single 'gay joke' can result in censorship. A single scene can significantly affect a film's rating in a given country. When studios submit their films for review, national rating boards frequently recommend specific edits to ensure adherence to local content standards.
My point is that you cannot always use ratings as a definitive measure to determine the degree of explicit content in a movie. Ratings are influenced by factors such as vulgar language and drug use etc. therefore, sex is not the only criterion considered when assigning ratings. Take 'Shame', where Michael fassbender had full-frontal nudity in few scenes, along with a brief homosexual encounter(a blow job scene) lasting just a few seconds. MPAA slapped it with NC-17 rating. Meanwhile, how does ST stand? It’s also got an NC-17 rating? Do you think it’ll resemble Shame and be borderline pornographic? of course not but It will likely feature gore and strong language, potentially dialing back on the sexual content, so the combination of those elements undoubtedly leads to that rating. while ST likely won’t delve into explicit content, the blend of mature queer themes could still impact its rating.
As for marketing and content, there would be no need to reveal sexual content in this, because it's likely a massive spoiler for the show anyway, and they'll be plenty of longing byler stares to show during promo. And when it comes to queer stories, gay love stories have been proven time and again to be the most popular, compared to things like lesbian (shows of which often get cancelled) and pansexual, trans. This is probably in part because mlm romance is beloved by groups of people who do not fit into the venn diagram of mlm themselves, such as straight women. One of the biggest consumers of mlm fiction is women. Straight men meanwhile would be more likely to watch lesbian porn than watch a lesbian love story like Portrait of a Lady on Fire. I hope people don't underestimate just how big the market is for an unproblematic gay ship between two pretty white boys like Mike and Will. Maybe this seems exploitative, but you bet your ass that Netflix know how to market byler and see its potential.
Right, of course, the market plays a significant role in shaping content. Japanese female audiences have shown a strong interest in gay storylines, to the point where Hollywood filmmakers sometimes consider them a key demographic. I recall seeing an interview where Hugh grant mentioned that Maurice had a significant following among Japanese women, which highlights the global appeal of certain gay narratives. But there are still significant barriers in how queer narratives are handled, both in terms of creative freedom and global distribution. Besides, netflix employs a territorial content strategy, it edits its shows to align with regional cultural sensitivities. This includes even censoring queer themes in certain countries to ensure compliance. So It would be a mistake to assume that just because queer representation is widely accepted and marketable in the US, Latin America and parts of Europe, the same applies globally. I’m only highlighting the preferences of the showrunners and the choices they make, which are influenced by multiple factors that you and I might consider trivial, but are taken into account. These factors include a broader ST brand strategy. Unlike HBO, netflix is concerned about all of that.
As members of the Byler fandom, it’s easy for us to assume that the Milevens fanbase is not substantial, but let me assure you, it is indeed. Do you really think netflix is unaware of this? They benefit from ship wars, leveraging the varying fan dynamics to generate engagement. Their primary objective is not to promote a queer agenda. it's about maximizing traction from both storylines. In terms of shipping dynamics, Jopper continues to dominate in popularity, while Mileven still enjoys a considerable following. Byler has gained tremendous popularity because the queer community knows how to voice their support effectively. The reality is that the GA isn’t even aware of it, and I’m not referring to the Milevens. Many of my friends have no clue about Byler at all. Netflix is savvy enough to keep it separate and leverage shippers to generate buzz for the show.
I’m not dismissing any of your points, in fact, I would probably articulate the same arguments if I were taking a different stance. So, think of this as just my futile rant. And Vinny, you too, just shrug off and scroll past.
I offer no rebuttals and ask for continued civility and thoughtful reading material as I post this one, and I hope it was OK to post? We know you dear demon for this brand of shade and a little challenge and varied thinking / perspective is always appreciated around here! 🖤🖤
Existentialist Themes in SpongeBob SquarePants: A Philosophical Exploration
Abstract
This paper examines how the animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants reflects existentialist themes through its portrayal of character choices, authenticity, and the search for meaning. By analyzing the series' central character, SpongeBob, and his interactions with his environment and other characters, we explore how existentialist philosophy manifests in a seemingly light-hearted children’s show. The analysis reveals that SpongeBob SquarePants provides a unique platform for existentialist discourse by illustrating concepts such as individual freedom, the absurd, and the quest for personal significance.
Introduction
The SpongeBob SquarePants series, created by Stephen Hillenburg, has been a prominent fixture in popular culture since its debut in 1999. While primarily known for its humor and whimsical setting, the show offers a fertile ground for exploring existentialist philosophy. Existentialism, a philosophical movement that emphasizes individual freedom, choice, and the inherent meaninglessness of life, is often associated with complex literary and philosophical texts. However, the existential themes in SpongeBob SquarePants offer a unique perspective on how existentialist ideas can be presented in popular media.
Existentialist Philosophy Overview
Existentialism, as articulated by philosophers such as Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, and Søren Kierkegaard, focuses on the individual's experience of a world that lacks inherent meaning. Key concepts include:
Freedom and Responsibility: The idea that individuals are free to make their own choices and must bear the responsibility for the consequences of these choices.
The Absurd: The recognition of the inherent meaninglessness of life and the conflict between humans’ desire for meaning and the indifferent universe.
Authenticity: The pursuit of living in accordance with one’s true self, despite societal pressures or external expectations.
SpongeBob SquarePants and Existentialist Themes
Freedom and Responsibility
SpongeBob SquarePants exemplifies existentialist freedom through his boundless enthusiasm and determination to live life on his own terms. Despite being a fry cook at the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob consistently chooses to embrace his job with passion and integrity, reflecting Sartre’s concept of radical freedom. His commitment to his work and his friends, even in the face of mundane routines and external pressures, demonstrates an acceptance of personal responsibility and the exercise of individual agency.
The Absurd
The absurdity of SpongeBob's world, where anthropomorphic sea creatures engage in bizarre and often illogical activities, mirrors Camus's notion of the absurd. The series frequently presents scenarios where SpongeBob and his friends grapple with life’s inherent meaninglessness. For example, episodes like “The Secret Box” and “Band Geeks” depict characters striving for recognition and success in a universe that seems indifferent to their efforts. SpongeBob's resilience and persistent optimism in the face of these absurd circumstances illustrate a defiant embrace of life’s absurdity.
Authenticity
SpongeBob’s character is a prime example of existential authenticity. He consistently exhibits a sense of self that aligns with his values and passions, regardless of societal expectations or external judgments. His genuine care for his job, his friends, and his community exemplifies Kierkegaard’s idea of living authentically. SpongeBob’s refusal to conform to the expectations of his boss or peers highlights his commitment to personal integrity and self-realization.
Character Interactions and Existentialist Reflection
Interactions between SpongeBob and other characters further underscore existential themes. For instance, SpongeBob’s relationship with Squidward Tentacles showcases a contrast between existential freedom and existential angst. Squidward’s frequent dissatisfaction and discontent reflect a struggle with the concept of authenticity and the search for meaning, contrasting with SpongeBob’s enthusiastic embrace of life’s possibilities.
Conclusion
SpongeBob SquarePants provides an accessible and entertaining lens through which existentialist philosophy can be explored. The show's depiction of SpongeBob’s freedom, the absurdity of his world, and his authentic self-expression aligns with key existentialist concepts. Through its vibrant narrative and engaging characters, SpongeBob SquarePants not only entertains but also prompts viewers to reflect on profound philosophical questions about freedom, meaning, and authenticity.
Alternative SpongeBob universe where the SpongeBob characters have their biologically accurate lifespans, but this doesn’t take away from the sweet and goofy nature of the show.
SpongeBob is like 400 years old and every 100 years he switches careers. I like to think he built every room in the pineapple and filled it with his inventions, and collected a metric ton of books for the library where he does research only a really long living creature could, and made that workout room but even after all these years he just doesn’t have the muscle - not that that’s gonna stop him from trying.
In fact he’s relatively good at karate despite his weakness, probably from years of training and he still calls it kah-rah-tay, cause he’s silly like that.
Same with boating school, like centuries in and he still can’t drive, it’s priceless. He still can’t tie his shoes without listening to that loop de loop and pull song. And it’s endearing too because he keeps giving it a go regardless. He keeps making friends and trying to be cool and working and jellyfishing, etc.
Working in the fast food industry sucks to everyone except SpongeBob, because living simply with his pet snail and neighbours and working behind the grill for the town is just as pleasant if not better than every other miscellaneous job he’s done up to this point.
None of his friends mind that he’s got a massive lifespan compared to them, cause aside from the time being the same, I feel like it would just be as notable as him having five fingers. Like living in the ocean amongst so many different species just makes the lifespan differences common knowledge.
You’d think that SpongeBob eventually outliving his friends is a pretty depressing idea, and I’d see what you mean, I grew up with all those sad theory and fact videos about cartoon characters haha. But, genuinely, in my mind this universe would go the same way, and SpongeBob would cherish his friends, rain or shine, 2 years later or 200 years later. He has the chance to be a god in Atlantis in Neptunes Spatula, but of course he’s not going without Patrick and all his other friends, no way.
I am very normal. 💚
My experience with my waiting room 🌌🌌
What is a waiting room
Firstly, A waiting room is simpily just another reality within realities where individuals can transition between two different states of being. There are many variations of waiting rooms, but they all serve the same purpose – to bridge the gap between different realities. Personally for me as a permeant shifter, I will eventually make my current waiting room my new point of origin. That just basically means instead of going to heaven or coming back here after “death” or whatever I just go to my waiting room when I’m done with lives. But you can use it however you want, that’s just how I use mine. Or at least I will in the future. A lot of people use it to rest, learn, take mental breaks from various realities and etc :)! You can cater it to you however you like just as you would any other reality because that’s literally what it is.
My first shift to my waiting room
My first ever shift which I had no intentions of going to, was a waiting room of sort. I remember it was winter and I was balls deep into my seasonal depression and I was having a horrible time at work. I literally just wanted to die and I remember using a meditation to calm my crying down, and after a while I forgot about my emotions. I just asked the universe to show me anything atp to prove to me I’m not wasting my time with shifting and it does get better. After a while instead of hearing SpongeBob in the background I heard waves instead. I don’t know where the hell I was but it wasn’t my house anymore. I woke up at a beach, and I immediately knew it wasn’t a dream because I felt the warm sand on my body and when I got into the water, I felt the splash of my feet and saw my reflection clearly. Honestly I was experiencing vivid tranquility so I didn’t really care where I was. I just wasn’t sad or tired anymore. I ended up falling asleep on the beach for what felt like I couple of hours but before I did I just hoped I didn’t have to go to work the next day. Anyways I woke up back in this reality and well work got cancelled because of the weather even though it was not in the forecast. I don’t know if it was a random waiting room reality, or a wish void state of sort, but that was my first real out of body experience.
Anyways that’s not my real waiting room…
I became friends (online)with a sound engineer who got into shifting and wanted to use me as a test subject for a fool proof shifting subliminal using science and experiments. Well it obviously worked and I shifted to a real waiting room with intention! It was my first actual shift that I intended, and I was super happy. I spent a whole day there basically just exploring all my options. Switching the aesthetics of my waiting room like a phone case or something lol. I added various amenities, experimented spawning in people and various animals etc etc. after I came back I still had no idea what I wanted my waiting room to look like but I made this a problem for later tbh. It was a very enriching experience regardless :)
Here are the links to the subs btw sub 1, sub 2. you can also explore all the other subliminals he created, as he has a bunch !
after sometime I ended up meeting some super dope people who are all probably my twin flames and we have a group waiting room now. This makes more sense because it wasn’t the waiting room was that was the problem, I just don’t want to be alone and I love people! Plus I will spend a while in my wr and use it for essentially eternity so I’m glad I figured out my problem and filled it with awesome fulfilling people :)!
Anyways I know this wasn’t very long, vivid, or specific but I don’t spend much time in wrs as of now ..and very much use this reality as my break between realities. But if you have any more specific questions my asks are ofc open 💗
Miles Quaritch is Educated
Just random character musings worth sharing.
For those who are less well-versed in the U.S. Military, Miles Quaritch being a Colonel means he is a Commissioned Officer which means he is 4-year college educated.
Assuming the same requirements held for the Avatar universe's 22nd century, and I don't see why they wouldn't, these are the following paths by which he could have become an Officer:
He went to a regular four-year university and did ROTC and graduated as a 2nd Lieutenant
He went to a regular four-year university and then went to Marines Officer Candidate School (OCS) and graduated as a 2nd Lieutenant
He graduated from the Naval Academy (which is a 4-year military university) as a 2nd Lieutenant
Now, I would infer, given his personality, that he at least spent *some* time as an enlisted Marine (private, corporal, etc.). What can happen sometimes is that you're so good while enlisted that they send you to a military academy to become an Officer as a reward. Given that he reached the rank of Colonel by the time he left the Marines for the private security life in the RDA, and was 51 in the first Avatar, he had to have become a 2nd Lieutenant fairly young, so like.. 22, 23, 24. I say this because he was on Pandora for 15 years by the first movie's events, so he at least achieved the rank of Colonel by 36 before going to the RDA, so his Officer career had to start pretty young.
Anyway. These are specific character details that will likely never be revealed, and for example in my fanfic (check my pinned post if interested😊) I suggest that he enlisted in the Marines as young as he was able to (age 17) and through his impressive tenacity was sent to the Naval Academy within a few years to become an Officer.
Regardless of what he precisely did, I think such informs his character quite well. Going to college doesn't make you smarter than others, but! It simply means he is educated, he had to take courses and do well in them, etc. and I think it adds some depth to him. "Dumb grunt" he is not.
i miss when kids cartoons were more expressive and fun to look at. like spongebob is a good example of how they've changed to the current era, like how the shapes are straightened out (his body going from a tapered curving square to a regular square) and kept in proportion instead of stretching out circles and stuff for emphasis. and how the colors brighten and get more saturated but not really mixing well. and how the lines stay the same size instead of tapering off to give more impressions of edges standing out.
modern cartoons often having thin lineart also annoys me like i miss late 2000's cartoons i watched that had thicker lineart like fairly odd parents and the grim adventures of billy & mandy and el tigre (which had AMAZING shape usage too btw) like it added variance to the shows with thinner lineart like adventure time or foster's home for imaginary friends (which LITERALLY had mostly lineless art??? i always loved how that show looked as a kid even if i didnt watch it much)
this isnt even me saying ALL modern cartoons suck like there are ones i like and dislike that feel this way to me. like ok, gravity falls, adventure time, steven universe and regular show were around when i was a kid and theyre 4 shows i liked, hated, or didnt watch but for the most part, their art style was nice. but they were also next to shows like the ones i listed above, that had protags that were funny-shaped creatures or had crazy styles or were less serious. some of those shows continued to the current day when cartoons look more and more like they do, with stiffer animation and more trope-y cast lineups, and regardless of how good they are as shows, its easy to see how the style gets a little stale, you know?
#also this is moreso a movie thing bc cartoons dont have 3D shows often#but 3D animation just seems to leave less room for expressiveness...#like itsv and tmvtm were expressive yeah but to me it felt like the ''3D-simulating-2D'' style helped with that#like when someone compared faces from the awful new mlp movie to the shows and it was so much less expressive#like that movie is ''full 3D'' you know
Hi Phoenix I was wondering do you have any advice when it comes to writing a story ? I’ve been planning /writing a story awhile now but I feel like I’m basically copying fairy tail , the way the hero and heroine meet is like how Natsu and Lucy meet , the team I’m planning putting them in pretty much team Natsu all cause I put a girl who magic is like Erza but it’s hard to make unique magic that fits into a fantasy world.I feel like I’m gonna have a mental break down with all this stress, sorry
Ok so first of all my comrade anon. Breathe. Slow your brain a bit, cant do anything if your stressed tf out lol.
Now that we got our heads screwed on straight let's get talking.
You feel like your copying FT but guess what? This is still the first pass of your story! There's time to fix and change and snip away things to make it it's own thing so stressing out over it while its a wip is moot! I get that is natural to hold your head while your still in progress (trust me i've been there) but you've got time! No deadlines! All the chances to keep fixing until the story comes into it's own until you get it right!
And plus there's also the fact that no story/character is truly original in the sense that tropes, character traits, story beats, powers, etc often find themselves repeating.
Lets give some examples!
If we stick close to home Fairy Tail, Eden's Zero and Rave Master all had their main duo have 'meetings by chance' where the male protag is given the chance to showcase his unique abilities by defeating a large group of minor antagonists and being the instigator for the story's major events.
Then going along further we meet a male character who's abilites lie in creation acting as a rival to our male MC and a another female character who is incredibly strong. Things repeat!
And outside of the mashima circle it still holds true.
Superman and Omniman from Invincible essentially are the same at their roots (and yes i know omniman was deliberately crafted to be a superman like figure but regardless) of being a nigh invincible super powered aliens.
Pinkie Pie from MLP, Spongebob and Mabel from Gravity Falls all fill the same niche of the super happy go lucky character.
Natsu and Luffy are often lumped together with bearing similar traits of being the positive male protag. Heck even in Naruto the character role of the hardworking loser is filled by both Naruto and Rock Lee in the same series!
The key thing that makes all these characters their own despite having similar traits? Their execution! How they're used in story and the traits the creator chooses to showcase the most!
Superman is a hero and uses his powers for good, Omniman is a colonizer seeking to take earth for his empire. Pinkie Pie's cheerfulness is used for gags and breaking that universe's logic, Spongebob's endless positivity being slapped onto such a normal thing ( just a dude working at burger king) is where half those jokes came from and Mabel's quirkiness is used both to balance out her brother but also is used as a flaw and insight into her character.
And you're worried about powers being similar but extends to powers too.
Powers especially! Truly unique powers are hard to come by in this day n age!
Luffy and Mrs.Incredible have the same powers of elasticity but both focus on different aspects to the elasticity and how they use em. Mrs.Incredible is a logical character and uses strategy hand in hand with her powers to cleanly incapacitate her opponents whereas Luffy is written to be hardhitting and is literally made of rubber instead of just being stretchy alone which allows deeper uses of his powers.
Elemental powers are a staple in fantasy media but! That doesn't stop em from being used does it? Avatar is a good example of this where yes it does use common powers, but those common powers were written with a tightly structured power system that made it stand out.
So at the end of the day, you should worry less about things seeming similar and focus more on the execution of your ideas.
Your protags have a meeting by chance, however where is it? Who ran into who? Did they start off on a good foot or as enemies?
You have a magical swordswoman, are you having her summon weapons? Why not change how she summons them? Maybe she has tattoos of the weapons she uses on her body to summon them, or she made contracts with deities who gifted her tools she can summon at will. Or she has prosthetic limbs that she transmutes into weapons to use at will.
Common ideas, but different ways how they can be used.
At the end of the day an interesting spin on an old trope or concept is what writing sorta is, so stressin about things that seem similar's gonna do ya more harm than good.
You have time to think and go over this more than once, look at your characters, really sit and look at then and figure out what traits they have that you want to exploit and how it can be used to build em as their own character. Dont worry too much on the powers, i can assure you that similarity is not the end of the world. As long as it isnt literally copy and paste then you are fine.
Breathe. Take a step back. Look all over at other series, books, even irl for inspiration.
You got this comrade.
