Well, I just had to replace my computer because everything phased it into obsoletion. Then just the other day I heard a big crash and found the monitor seal has somehow failed. The monitor is completely shattered. I will be getting updates to commissions as soon as I can. I had to go to Best Buy to get the files taken off the broken computer. I think for less intense files I can work on the iPad.

I realize probably everyone is a bit strapped with the holidays and everything — but if anyone wants to order icons to help me out in the meantime I’d be thankful. I’m working with the original seller now since the insurance that came with the machine won’t cover anything due to it being “technical” failure lol.

Alright finally! I have these pages out!

I've been excited to post these pages for a long time and hope you all like them! Man! Working on a comic is hard and I spent so long trying to be satisfied with how consistent the style and rendering is but it's finally in a place where I feel it's alright.

I am sorry for being away for so long. I needed a creative break from my posting. I found another creative outlet for a while (it rhymes with stick-stock). But that recently took a sour turn for me (I’ll get into that later).

The Siren, or The Heart of the Matter

Chapter One: The Book, or Inez is a Fucking Goddess

A/N: This story takes place roughly after the events of Captain America: Winter Soldier, but it is an AU where Bucky comes to live at the Tower to heal and work with the Avengers. It will probably not be at all canon-compliant because we're really just here to have a good time, so let's go with the flow! <3

Summary: Cleo's trip to the library does not go as planned.

“Inez?” I lean over the librarian’s desk for the third time. “Any luck yet?” I hear a faint rustling coming from the back office where requests are processed and brought up from the bowels of the library, and I triple-cross my fingers inside the sleeves of my oversized cardigan, begging the universe for even a speck of luck.

“YES!” Inez shouts, uncharacteristically loud in her victory. She bustles out from the back room with a stack of ancient looking books. “Sorry, sweetheart, I don’t know what’s taken them so long!”

Donning my reading gloves, I gingerly accept the stack with an enormous grin. “No worries, they’re here now and that’s what matters.”

Inez and I glance up at the clock together, realizing the same thing at the same time. I frown, reluctant to hand the stack back over after waiting nearly all day for the assistants to find them in rare book storage. Before I can speak, though, Inez winks at me. “I think we can let you stay until we wrap things up back here, just this once.”

I huff a massive sigh of relief. “You’re a fucking goddess, Nez. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

Inez waves her hands. “Don’t mention it. Just act like this never happened if Dean Wharton asks, yeah? And bring me some cookies.”

With promises of a lifetime supply of any flavor of cookie Inez could desire, I make my way to my favorite table in the back corner of the reading room. It’s quiet back here, sound muffled by the shelves and shelves of books, and there’s only room for a few smaller tables. It’s almost always deserted, especially this near closing time. 

I take a few moments setting up my workspace - opening my computer, getting the word doc pulled up, arranging my stack of books chronologically… and then I dive in. I know the extra time from Inez will buy me an hour - two at most - so I have to be efficient. Fortunately, I only have a few texts to review today. Unfortunately, it’s one of those days where I really have no clue what I’m looking for. 

Still, I crack on, making note of anything that seems remotely relevant to my research and jotting down a few referenced texts to check out next time I have the chance. With maybe half an hour left of my borrowed time, I sigh in relief - only one book left. Which is curious, now that I think of it, because I’ve reviewed every book on my list already. I run a gloved hand over the front cover, feeling a little tingle as my fingers trace illegible gold-leafed words. 

Maybe Jack is working today, I think. He sometimes throws in an extra book or two if they seem related to my study. Meg likes to say it’s his nerdy way of professing his undying love for me, but Meg is often full of shit and just enjoys stirring the pot.  

Still, Jack knows the handful of languages I’m capable of translating on my own, and whatever language this is, I’ve never seen it before. 

Couldn’t hurt to peek inside, though, could it? I muse. Maybe I’ll be able to pick out something familiar. Better yet, I could find an illustration and use that to place it in history so I can at least google it later.

Holding my breath (though not really knowing why), I ease the cover open. The unfamiliar letters are still in that gold leafing, I note, but before I can make any other observations, my vision begins to swim. The letters dance on the page before me, rearranging in countless different combinations, and I briefly wonder if I’m finally losing my mind from months of over-work. I’m finally able to make out a single word, type it out hastily, before everything goes black.

“Hey!” Inez hisses, shaking my shoulder. “You gotta wake up - if I let you stay any longer the night crew will see you.”

I blink sleepily, lifting my head from the desk. Luckily, I seem to have nodded off on my computer instead of one of the rare books Inez has already gathered in her arms. 

“Shit, Nez, I’m so sorry. This dissertation is kicking my ass. I must have fallen asleep.”

Inez is already walking away. “It’s two batches of cookies, now. And you have five minutes to get out!” She glances back over a shoulder and shoots me a wink, letting me know we’re okay.

I frantically gather my things, head still spinning a little. Clearly, I need more rest - I’ve never fallen asleep while researching before, and I have certainly had plenty of opportunities. 

I’ll have to do a deep dive later, I think, mulling over the origins of the mystery book. Before nodding off, I hadn’t managed to type out more than a single, haunting word: Atlantis. 

Jack doesn’t know enough to have done this on purpose, and neither Meg or Dr. Sapros are cruel enough to fuck with me. Well, Sapros might be, but he’s in Europe right now.

It had to be a wild coincidence, then, and even though I’m reluctant to start down that path again - Therein lies madness, Sapros had told me once - I am of the mind that coincidences don’t really exist. My dad liked to say that a coincidence is just the work of the universe pushing you where you need to go. 

I step out into the chilly evening, pulling my cardigan tight around my chest to stave off the cold, and for the first time in a long while I let my mind wander wherever it pleases.

I'm seeing so much actively harmful misinfo regarding boycotts.

If you are spreading information on a boycott PLEASE focus on just what the BDS is asking you to boycott. In my honest opinion even THAT is a lot to keep track of, but boycotts work better the more laser-focused they are.

This is the closest thing to an official boycott being asked:

I've seen a lot of posts both here and elsewhere asking people to boycott not just everything on that list, but also Walmart, Amazon, Google, PespsiCo, Coke, Nestle, 4 dozen other big name conglomerates, and a big list of at least 50+ individual celebrities/CEOs/actors. That is not boycotting.

If YOU want to personally abstain from every Israeli-supporting-prduct/service you can, please do it!!!! Even before now, I've personally always abstain from chick-fil-a and 🏴‍☠️ most of my media–but that isn't an organized boycott. In fact, spreading info that every single one of those companies/individuals are "part of the boycott" is blatant misinformation and actually harms the boycott.

Giant lists that include dozens to hundreds of giant conglomerates and individuals that are hard to keep track of are meant to overwhelm individuals and dissuade them from boycotting at best, and are actively impossible to personally enforce at worst. If you are reading this post, chances are you are breaking one of the many unofficial "boycotts" being asked of you.

For example, following every ""boycott"" being asked of you 100% means: stopping use of any Google products (quitting a job that uses Google workspace, abandoning your Android phone, switching to Firefox or Safari web browser, not using Gmail, not using YouTube), stop using most/all social media, making entirely home cooked meals (every restaurant, even small ones, support Pepsi/coke), only being allowed to buy ingredients for those home cooked meals from physical, local small businesses (which may be wiped out in your area/take more gas to drive to/cost more money to buy from), and cross-checking every single item you buy with a giant list (that I hope you printed out, because chances are you can't use your phone/the internet without sending precious ad profit to Google!).

Telling someone to "do that much or do nothing" is going to result in the vast, vast majority of people doing nothing. Think about the every day people in your life–parents, coworkers, community members. Are they going to do that much? If the answer is no, then a boycott is ineffective. Stick to spreading the image at the top of this post. The more people boycotting a small handful easy-to-remember companies, the more effective a boycott will be. A small amount of companies will lose a lot of money, and will have to re-evaluate their stance to give money to Israel–the point of a boycott. But, if everyone only ends up boycotting a handful of completely different companies depending on what list they were given online, all of those companies only lose a little money and no impact is made at all.

TLDR: Feel free to personally abstain from whatever products/services you want, but spreading that they are part of the boycott if they AREN'T is harmful!

My first fanbinding project!

Obviously it’s not perfect. Far from it. But I’m thrilled nonetheless. It looks like a real book! Granted, one that was splattered by glue and stored in a humid room, maybe, but still! A real book that was spattered by glue and stored in a humid room!

Lessons for next time: use the right kind of glue and/or less of it. Keep the workspace neat (ahem, glue-free). Ok, mostly my lessons involve glue.

I also made a book press out of two wood plaques from the craft store and some carriage bolts and wingnuts. Super easy and cost under $10!

Fic: Ship of Theseus by Gallaplacidia (fic is no longer on ao3, but a link to an archive of her work can be found here.) My podfic of it.

Fonts used: Garamond for the text, Frontage for the cover. I designed it using InDesign. Printing it properly involved a lot of cursing and googling.

The cover is canvas from Joann's, backed with lightweight fusible interfacing. I got the chipboard from a craft store. The paper used is cheap stuff I had on hand. I was trying to make this without spending any money, but my wallet laughed at that. At least now I have enough supplies to make a few more without buying anything.

My next project is already in the design stage. It's a much longer fic, but as it will be a gift for the author, that's all I can say now.

I chose this fic primarily because it's short because I thought that might be easier, but aside from the amount of time it took to sew the signatures together (negligible) I don't think it made a difference. I suppose the typesetting took less time as well.
