Since my Solar return was this month, I will be blunt this year and let my astro community have fun (as much as I had it, looking at it) with my Solar return chart.

It is in whole sign method and tropical astrology, and, for your consideration, I'm going to tell you that I'm in my Asc (in Sagittarius) profection year with Jupiter as my ruler (who is one of the planet already ruling my natal chart) and that I'm, if the numbers of my age are combined, in a number 9 year (who is, in numerology, my birth number)...Enjoy!

chart patterns; earth grand trine

in astrology, when three planets are in the three signs that make up a single element (fire, earth, air, water), and all trine one another with an orb of less that 10° in the chart, a powerful and quite rare aspect is formed: the grand trine.

An earth grand trine can be observed within a natal chart when there is at least one planet in each of the signs Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, and all three trine one another with an orb of less than 10°. An example of this would be a 20° Taurus Venus, a 17° Virgo Mercury, and a 24° Capricorn Saturn. This would mean that the native has an earth grand trine present within their chart.

Natives who have the earth grand trine present within their natal chart have a strong, steady soul. They will typically lean in favour of organisation, instead of spontaneous action which contrasts their need to be well-organised in most situations. They are patient, and do not work against time, but rather with it by their side. It is this patience that contrasts them with the other grand trines, which are often such an overflow of a single elemental energy that it defines and can often control them, making them restless and intense. An earth grand trine functions oppositely. They are neither restless nor intense/overbearing. They hold faith in the earth and the world around them, and know that what they need, they will eventually achieve.

They are masters of building people up, instead of tearing them down, and as well as supporting others, they know how to construct solid foundations for themselves. They are, in short, some of the most uplifting, fortifying presences. However, it does not do this grand trine justice to simply become caught up in this more masculine and physical builder archetype. The earth grand trine, contrary to the perception of some, can be feminine too. Don't forget, earth is a yin element, meaning that it is feminine, along with water, and also that the Venusian Taurus is functioning in this grand trine, bringing the eternal grace and femininity of Venus (simply the Roman name for the Greek Aphrodite) herself. When an earth grand trine appears in the chart of a feminine person, make no mistake. She can be Mother Nature herself, in tune with all the nature and earth around her in a way that many others are not. Earth grand trine natives possess a certain tempo, pushing them on steadily at their own rhythm, yet still leading them to life's most beautiful of treasures. They are skilful and strong, but also immensely elegant.

These natives almost apotheosise stability. When all else is in chaos, people often find themselves looking to earth grand trine natives for a shelter through the storm. However, this stability is not always necessarily for the better. If not careful, those with an earth grand trine can become reclusive and shy, their loyalty to their close ones becoming their own self-inflicted pain, as, distance will naturally come between the earth grand trine and their close ones, as it does with everyone, (if, for example, their friends move away to study, etc). However, the earth grand trine native can be so strongly loyal to those with whom they already have valuable relationships, and therefore slow to build connections with others, that they begin to appear cold to the outside world, and even become lonely. As previously stated, like water, earth is a yin element, making it introspective and often introverted, as can often be seen through this aspect of the earth grand trine. This can, however, be avoided, if the native attempts to throw themselves out of their comfort zone a little more.

Nevertheless, their practicality, punctuality, and stability remain these natives' greatest weapons, as they possess such qualities in much more of an abundance than the average person. They will always be strong, soothing, and steady, as well as a reliable, uplifting friend and companion whenever you need them. Relationships with an earthy native such as these are often of the ride or die nature, and will last for life, so value them dearly. These souls are some of the purest on earth in their loyalty, a value that they will forever guard, even if it eventually morphs into self-inflicted loneliness, and an inability to open up (though, like most things in life, this can easily be avoided).

Can I ask what effect does a Grand Trine have in a chart? OvO"

Grand Trines have the reputation of giving a person an "easy" or "charmed" life, since they don't include more complicated aspects like squares or oppositions. If someone is able to coast through without many difficulties, they may begin to take things for granted, or not put in much effort. Think of it as an unmoving triangle that you're in the center of, and it's (allegedly) (theoretically) protecting you from everything, but also causing you to lose your drive to create and conquer. Eventually, though, a rude awakening will come, since no one can avoid problems forever.

It also makes a bit of a difference which element your trine is in:

Fire grand trines have to do with inspiration, creativity and passion

Earth grand trines are associated with wisdom and material prosperity

Air grand trines give intellectual curiosity, but also emotional detachment

Water grand trines enhance one's ability to be intimate and sentimental

chart patterns: the splash configuration

In a natal chart, there are 10 planets that are represented. These planets are usually arranged in configurations called chart patterns. One notable chart pattern is the splash configuration. This rare chart pattern occurs when planets occupy at least eight out of 12 signs or houses, spread rather evenly or “splashed” around the entire chart. An ideal splash pattern would contain five equally-spaced oppositions and no conjunctions, although there can be as many as two conjunctions and still be considered a splash pattern. The splash most frequently occurs when the Sun, Mercury and Venus are in different signs and houses. And if one pair of planets in the chart is separated by at least 54° (sextile) and another pair by at least 82° (square), then the pattern is probably an hourglass/seesaw. This chart pattern symbolizes a well-balanced nature with the broadest of interests; it allows the native to integrate a number of apparently unrelated things in a meaningful way. These natives have the potential to do many things well, the ability to find order in apparent confusion, and are geniuses of versatility. Since they can have their fingers in so many pies, these natives may feel that they can deal with any situation that comes along.

For this example, let’s look at the chart of one of my all-time favourite singers Sarah Vaughan, who had a splash configuration.

As you see, the planets that form this splash are more or less evenly distributed throughout the chart, with each quadrant populated with at least one planet. There is a slight emphasis in the western hemisphere, which meant that she equally as self-reliant as she was a team player. There is a 60/40 split between the planets; the western hemisphere has 6 planets, and the eastern has 4. Also, there is a slight emphasis on her northern hemisphere (which has 6 planets) as opposed to her southern hemisphere, which has 4. This meant that she was an ambivert; when it came to her personal life she was mostly introverted, but in her professional life she was able to project out to the public. She also has a lot of squares and quite a few oppositions, so she’s had a hard row to hoe. Since her planets are all over the place, for simplicity’s sake, let’s isolate each hemisphere of the splash and investigate her personality and how it contributed to her life path.

First, I shall investigate her eastern hemisphere of 4 planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Moon, and Mars), where it concerned her own individuality and personality. Her Moon conjunct Mars in Capricorn in the 2nd house indicated emotional anxiety and impatience. Her feelings were strong and always in turmoil, because she was extremely sensitive to what people said or did to her. Her imagination worked overtime inferring slights against her that were never made. Jupiter in Sagittarius in the 2nd house is a much-welcomed beneficent aspect in her chart, she had a very optimistic and philosophical outlook on life that supported her large-scale ambitions and visions. She didn’t want to be pigeonholed or labeled, as a singer or a woman, often rejecting the “jazz singer” label. This rejection of labels, and her faith in music, defined her worldview. Saturn in Scorpio in the 12th house, she had strong reserves and a powerful yet undeveloped sense of purpose. She was timid, moody and sensitive, and indefinable fears tended to weigh her down and make her see the world in a negative light.

Next, looking at her western hemisphere of 6 planets (Neptune, Venus, Pluto, Mercury, Uranus, Sun), it was clear that she had a slightly bigger need for partnerships and a working as well as a deeply personal connection with others. Sun and Mercury square Pluto, her approach to life had a tendency to be extreme, a little suspicious of others' motives and intentions, secretive about her own, and basically pessimistic in tone. Her behaviour often was unpredictable and erratic, making it difficult for others to take her for granted, and encouraging them to keep a certain distance away from her. She was a little uneasy with close contact in relationships, taking considerable time to develop a feeling of trust and relative relaxation with partner. Venus sextile Uranus, she was clever in social dealings, reasonably competent in facing challenges, and charming in her romantic affairs. Mercury trine Neptune (often found within the charts of successful and creative individuals such as Vaughan), she was very effective in transmitting her ideas and intentions, and skilled in the forms in which she clothed her messages. Anything she sang was noticed by others, and that by grasping their attention she created a situation where some response is evoked, and it was usually a very positive one. Her Venus in Taurus in the 7th is working overtime here, being one of her dominants, as it detailed her enjoyment from the arts and entertainment in general, especially music. She had a fine singing voice. Close and secure relationships brought her a sense of wholeness and fulfillment, whether on a personal or a business level. She instinctively knew how to accommodate to the other person and create harmony within the marriage, and this was vital for her self-worth. This is evidenced in her marriage to her husband, she was described as almost childlike in her anxiety not to displease him. If in his absence she went for a moment against his wishes, she was almost instantly contrite, hoping he would never find out what she had done. She also tended to overly rely on other people’s approval and saw herself and her beauty and value in terms of how it was seen by others, rather than in its own right. According to Vaughan, her life began with a devastating, unutterable resentment of being dark-skinned and unattractive, often wishing, per her own words “that she was lighter skinned”. This was reinforced by her accounts of a light-skinned girl that would call her names when she was younger as well as music critics denigrating her appearance in adulthood.

Her northern hemisphere of 6 planets (Jupiter, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Sun, Uranus) meant that her drive, communication style, and emotions came from internal forces. Her 5th house Sun-Mercury conjunction in Aries meant that she expressed herself creatively and boldly through her uncommon, pioneering voice and excelled at it. Jupiter in Sagittarius in the 2nd house is a much-welcomed beneficent aspect in her chart, as is Uranus trine her ascendant; money and material possessions were how she assessed her own worth and value. The more she had, the more fulfilled and satisfied she felt. She was her own individual, musically speaking. Moon conjunct Mars, her feelings were strong and always in turmoil, because she was extremely sensitive to what people said or did to her. Mercury square Mars, she was strongly opinionated, and got angry when her views were not accepted. She was not a good listener if the opinions being expressed were different from hers. Jupiter square Uranus, she needed more clarity in her life. There was a spreading uncertainty within her that made it difficult to concentrate her energies and purpose together. She was unsure of her real motivations, desires and needs; and there was no cohesive belief structure that she could use as a temporary center. What she did feel was this frustrating tension, which inhibited her choices and options.

Sun in Aries in the 5th square moon and Mars in Capricorn in the 2nd meant that she bitterly resented that she had to make enormous adjustments in order to get what she wanted from life. When her efforts didn't yield the expected results, she became annoyed and flew off the handle in disgust. Experience probably taught her that she did not plan her actions carefully enough, so that she got exactly what she deserved under the circumstances. Her sense of play and singularity (Aries, 5th house) clashed with her sense of duty and value (Capricorn, 2nd). This is reflected in her tendency to minimize herself: she referred to herself as a child as a “shy, defensive, bucktoothed” girl. Despite the fame, glamour, commercial success, and acclaim she has achieved, she still didn’t feel like a big star, she just felt plain. During most of her life, that description was painfully accurate. Sarah Vaughan was just that—plain. At first too young to understand the social shame inherent in race prejudice, the young Sarah Vaughan shifted the responsibility of the rejection and injustice she suffered to herself and her colour. As she grew older, understanding came. But nothing could ever repair completely the emotional and psychological hurts she had suffered. This sensitivity is also reflected in her Aries sun square her Capricorn moon (coincidentally, the exact natal aspect shared by fellow complex-ridden jazz chantuese Billie Holiday).

Her 4-planet southern hemisphere populated by Venus, Pluto, Neptune, and Saturn mean that her appeal, ambition, and power came from her dealings with the public. Her Venus opposite ascendant indicates either homeliness or ugliness in appearance as well as indicating negative attitudes of others to her appearance. In the mid-1940s, a New York writer cut her to the heart when he wrote:

“She is not exactly handsome to look at, having a toothy face with a flattened, ski-jump nose, almost oriental eyes, and a low forehead oppressed by a pile of black hair.”

Even after she had begun to sing professionally, her looks were a cross she bore gravely. Her Neptune in Leo in the 9th house, she was representative of a very artistically talented and creative generation that wanted to escape from the demands of the world around them into a world of excitement and glamour. She was famous internationally as a musician or artist, and was also tempted to use drugs or alcohol to expand her mind. This is reflected in Vaughan’s long-standing tastes for cocaine and marijuana. Pluto in Cancer in the 8th house, there are devastating social upheavals concerning home and family. Relationships with partners involved a power struggle and even violence, either emotional or physical. Some sort of taboo may be broken by her choice of partner (as it was by her attraction to and professional association with white fan-turned manager Marshall Fisher). She experienced trouble in the form of conflict and treachery in the areas of other people’s money and finances, taxation, business deals and divorce settlements. This is reflected in her unfortunate pattern of making her often-abusive husbands her managers despite their lack of business acumen and experience.

Uranus in Pisces in the 4th house meant that she felt uncomfortable facing reality, and rightly found the world a difficult place to survive in. She indulged in negative escapism as a preferred way of escaping the harsh reality of the world around her. Also, whether through personal choice or unavoidable circumstances, her family didn’t have the same conventional structure or base as the rest of society. This is reflected in her not being able to have children, yet still maternal; she adopted instead. Saturn in Scorpio in the 12th house, although she had great depth of feeling, she may have had enormous difficulty in expressing it, and when she felt anxious, she pushed her emotions into the background, because she knew how easily she could be hurt. She tried to protect herself as much as possible. Venus in Taurus in the 7th square Neptune in Leo in the 9th, her defenses usually went up whenever anything or anyone seemed to challenge her. They may not in fact be threatening her, but she still responded as if they were. It was not easy for her to see things clearly, and she was often ill-advised in her judgement. Neptune square ascendant, she was overly sensitive to criticism. Because of this, she often failed to assert herself when she should have defended herself against adversaries.

i'm back :P

hi guys! i know it's been a while and i haven't posted in a longgg time, but i've decided to put an end to my mini retreat and continue working on my astro blog on here!

with this message i also wanted to say thank you to all of you guys who liked and reposted all my posts whilst i was gone, so thank you for all of the love and support, it means so much to me!

i'm going to pick up with where i left off with my blog, on my series on chart patterns (stelliums, grand trines, grand crosses, yods, etc). i think after this i'll either continue working through the houses (like my planets in the 12th house series) or i might hold a public vote/poll so that you guys can decide on what you'd like to see the most from me!

i'm also gonna make some minor changes/reforms to my posts. every time the season changes (the first will be when taurus season begins, on 20/04), i'm going to make a seasonal post. at the beginning of every week (as of 17/04), i'm going to make a post describing all that week's notable transits, and what they signify astrologically. on top of all of this, i'll also add some wider reading to the bottom of my new posts (and hopefully, with time, all of my old ones), including some sources i used for supplementary information in my post, and just general links i've found and think could prove useful to aspiring learners!
