if you (or any of this blog's followers who likes statistics) have the time to go into detail, how can i find and/or make charts similar to those? i'm curious to see more recent numbers for the stats in the research but i don't know how to search for them. looking up terms like 'ao3 statistics' only brings up results for personal works like hits, views, and kudos.

Cecelia Aragon runs a data science lab at a university where they downloaded all of FFN and then wrote programs to try to assign metadata and crunch numbers.

The first step to any stats project is to figure out what question you're asking and what kind of data would actually answer it.
Then you look at your target site (or whatever) and see where that data might be stored or how it could be determined in a relatively objective way. This requires a lot of understanding of the site in question.
For example, I wanted shipping stats for Wattpad. It doesn't offer AO3-style tags for that, so I needed to randomly sample, then hand-classify. Destination Toast ran an analysis like that and outsourced the classification to others with the instruction to mark something as "gen" if it was too hard to tell if there was a ship. Knowing what Wattpad is like—very, very het and very, very incoherent—I thought this was a poor choice. When I did my analysis, I erred on the side of assuming something was het rather than gen. I think that makes my numbers more accurate, but more is not entirely. Since I did my hand-classification myself, it will be more consistent... but also potentially more inaccurate in some particular direction. Outsourcing reduces the chance of one person's takes biasing the whole dataset but introduces other potential problems.
Being aware of these drawbacks in various methods of looking at data is important. You can't really fix them, but you can at least note them in your writeup.
For example, looking at AO3 as AO3 is relatively easy, but using AO3 to generalize about fanfic is a terrible idea. Many fandom stats people don't realize this or don't realize why this is so.

Discovery
PVS-07 was discovered in the library of a high school in Atlantic City, New Jersey, after a group of students, who shall remain anonymous, encountered the entity. One afternoon in the library, the group of students attempted to download adult material onto the device. This had set off the entity, who suddenly appeared on the screen and responded with “Don't you have BETTER things to do?!” This frightened the teens, as this proved that she was, in fact, sentient. The incident was reported to library staff by the teens, who in turn, reported it to the Paraview Foundation. 
The computer PVS-07 resides in was relocated to the facility. Upon questioning by investigators, the library staff noted that her computer was the only one capable of downloading those kinds of images while connected to the school's system, and that the downloading of explicit material was not an isolated incident. 
At the end of her Icebreaker Interview, the subject requested that any and all explicit material was to be deleted off her system. This request was granted, with fervor. Dr. Packard was brought in to get rid of the images, and has now been assigned as PVS-07’s researcher henceforth.

Noted Behavior and Abilities
- PVS-07’s physical hardware consists of an electric blue CRT computer monitor and its accompanying console. These are to be plugged in at all times with the exception of cases where she needs to be relocated to another area of the facility. PVS-07 is normally located in the Rec Room of the facility, but shall be brought in to Dr. Packard’s office for testing purposes.
- PVS-07, as noted in her discovery section, has a strong disdain and aversion to explicit material that’s downloaded or browsed on her system. The normally jovial and polite subject becomes noticeably frustrated upon this activity. She has also expressed annoyance toward a song about the subject from the musical Avenue Q. As such, SafeSearch and filters have been implemented. Staff or subjects that are caught doing these kinds of activities with the subject are to be properly reprimanded.
- The subject behaves similar to that of a virtual assistant, being able to interact with and manipulate the programs on the computer such as the email, calendar, to-do lists, documents, etc. 
- The subject has been shown to use emoticons displayed on her screen, and the screen of her computer, to express her emotions. 
- The subject has also been able to view and with games, music, literature, and other things downloaded onto the computer. PVS-07 has also been noted to frequently request things to be downloaded for her, likely for entertainment purposes. Dr. Packard has been seen bringing in new games from their home to download onto the subject’s system. 
- Dr. Packard has been instructed that the games and media on her system shall only be those considered “family friendly”, and to leave the more “mature” games at home. This restriction was implemented after Dr. Packard brought in their copy of Duke Nukem 3D, which, upon PVS-07 seeing the objectionable and risque content present within the game, was very displeased. This restriction shall also apply to the rest of Staff and subjects. 
- Subjects such as PVS-13 (“August”), PVS-29 (“Finn”), PVS-46 (“Zester”), are to be at least 6 feet away from PVS-07’s computer. Due to risk of short-circuiting, causing seizure-like symptoms in the subject. 
- PVS-07 has developed a close relationship with PVS-05 (“Vee”), despite not being biological related, they have come to see each other as siblings. PVS-07 especially considers PVS-05 a “kindred spirit”. 
-In the case of a blackout or emergency shutdown, the flash drive in the console shall be removed and transferred over to a laptop. The flash drive was implemented to preserve the subject’s existence in case of these events. 
-After an incident where PVS-07 became infected with a computer virus, anti-virus software has since been implemented into her system. Staff and Subjects were also given a lecture in the auditorium to teach/remind them of computer safety in order to prevent future incidents both to the subject’s computer and the rest of the computers in the facility.

Official Maid Guidebook - On Mimicry
Maids are everywhere in our society, both in the public eye and sequestered away to private manors. They perform their duties, completing tasks that humans either refuse to do or are incapable of. That is not to say these maids are in positions of suffering. After all, this is what maids excel at! We will be exploring this concept and more in today’s edition of the Official Maid Guidebook.
For some background, the most well known modern habitat for maids is in the manor(s) of mistresses or miladies, hereafter referred to collectively as mistresses for the remainder of this edition. In such environments, there may be one or more maids that collectively or separately work to accomplish a series of tasks laid forth by their mistress. These maids will be referred to as private-sector maids. That said, this is all widely available and understood information, so this edition will not be venturing into it beyond this point.
When it comes to maids outside of manors, or public-sector maids as they will be referred to, their role shifts quite a bit, as well as their interactions with their mistress. In fact, many such maids effectively answer to multiple mistresses in the process of completing their duties, while some answer to none at all! These types of maids tend to be much more highly specialized than their private-sector counterparts. It is not uncommon for commands from their mistresses to be translated through a variety of interfaces such as buttons, levers, or software.
Despite their relative obscurity, recent studies have shown that the number of public-sector maids vastly outnumber private-sector ones. The reason many such maids seem to be overlooked is that they do not conform to a recognizable humanoid shape. We will not go in-depth here, but maids evolved from mimics several millennia ago and are still considered a subspecies of them by a large portion of scientific literature. While there is debate about whether they can truly still be considered as such, their exact classification is not important to this edition. We encourage interested readers to search out more materials on the subject in their free time. Suffice to say, however, maids are capable of assuming a seemingly infinite variety of forms of almost limitless complexity.
An example of a type of public-sector maid is the alternating pressure hospital mattress. The purpose of these maids is to periodically adjust the pressure on various parts of the patient's body when they are unable to move it themselves. This can occur for a variety of reasons that are not important here. These maids are essential in preventing complications that can otherwise occur from a patient lying still for long periods of time while also drastically reducing the workload of nurses. In this example, these maids perform a very specific task without continued input from a mistress. Instead, their mistress — the nurse — will instruct the maid to begin a series of pre-determined behaviors using a complex interface of buttons. Do not confuse this terminology to mean that the maids are not sentient, capable of interpreting more complicated instructions, or even disobeying their mistresses. Such “pre-determined behaviors” are not programmed by humans and are instead present from the moment they assume their current shape. This confusion between maid and machine has led to a number of well-known accidents since their domestication and introduction to the public-sector. In modern times, there are more safety measures in places to prevent any more deaths.
When it comes to clearing up this confusion, there are a series of simple observational steps that can be undertaken. The simplest one is to look for a clear power source. It is sometimes the case that a device of unknown biology will lack a cord to a power outlet and should thus not be capable of functioning. Unfortunately, the advent of sodium-nuclear batteries in the past few decades has maid this method all but obsolete.
A more reliable tell is to examine the internal and external makeup of the device for incongruencies in its design. While maids excel at mimicking the behavior of machines from the moment of their expulsion, they are often not aware of the actual mechanical and technological workings of the device they are mimicking. An obvious example of this manifesting would be if the gears of a clock are not touching, yet they appear to move together as expected. Another one that has been observed frequently in the past is the structure of power cords, when they are present, not aligning with reality. For example, for a North American power plug, the ground and one of the polarized pins could be swapped, or the polarized pins might not fit the socket when oriented using the grounding pin. This has unfortunately become largely obsolete for the same reasons as mentioned before. We would advise you to not use this as a reliable method of ruling out the possibility of it being a maid either, as this is primarily a mistake maid by younger members of the species. Based on admittedly limited research, by the time a maid has reached maturity, it is nearly impossible to tell the difference without the help of a professional.
As an aside, we do not recommend you try any of these methods if you suspect a mirror to be a maid. In such a situation, please discard the mirror immediately. Do not attempt to break it.
While there is much more to cover on the subject, that is all we have the time for today. We know this edition may have frightening or disconcerting information contained within, so we wish to also give some reassurances. Maids have been in this fascinating and symbiotic relationship with humans for several centuries and remain an integral part of our society. It is likely due to their help that we have maid it as far as we have as a species. Even if it could be worrying to not know if a device you are using is a maid or a machine, it is unlikely to make a difference in its functionality. As such, we believe your worry is better spent elsewhere.

Some more stuff about Esteban based on what we've heard in the show.
The most substantial episode we've ever had about him was "The Sitter Cancelled" where he was five. I'm not sure why Cecil and Carlos needed a sitter for him when he should be in either preschool or kindergarten? Unless you subscribe to the theory that Cecil's radio station isn't broadcast live, which would mean the show could have been on a Saturday. Or Finknor just genuinely forgot that Esteban is school age now. Or Cecil and Carlos are homeschooling him. (As a former homeschooled kid, I can say with confidence that they are NOT qualified for that.) Or school just works differently for Night Vale.
A few people have said that Esteban was acting like a toddler in "The Sitter Cancelled", but I thought about it and I think him being five makes sense. He was able to go play on his own in the booth and then just come find his dad when he needed something, which makes sense to me, and he went down for a late afternoon nap which little kids often do when they come back from school for the day. And while the books that Cecil reads to him are Night Vale versions of board books for toddlers, some little kids get really attached to that kind of book and want to keep hearing it even as they get older. My little brother is thirteen and he still wants to be read to, though he tends to do chapter books now.
Esteban is adopted, but in Ten Years Later, Carlos says that he was born in Night Vale. It's not clear how Cecil and Carlos were connected with him, but most likely his birth giver turned him over to an adoption agency who then paired him with a family. Because he was adopted as a baby they were probably paired with the birth giver before Esteban was born, so they may know his biological parent or parents, but Esteban probably doesn't.
According to "A Spy in the Desert," Cecil and Carlos adopted Esteban two years prior to the events of the show, meaning that they had been married for about a year and a half before he came home. Because "C****s" confirms that he was a baby at the time of his adoption, Esteban began talking in short sentences at only 18 months. This is rare as most children only have about a 70 word vocabulary at that age and can usually only form two-word sentences by the time they turn two.
Esteban is implied to have ADHD. Cecil mentions that Esteban is consistently restless in "The Sitter Cancelled" and that he throws frequent tantrums at ages four, five, and six. He also seems to have trouble listening to instructions.
Between giraffes, bunnies, toads, and birds, it's been mentioned multiple times that Esteban likes animals. In "It Sticks With You" Carlos talks to him about the scientific classifications of different animals and the circle of life.
It's possible (although this is REALLY speculative) that Esteban has a little sister, since in the children's fun fact science corner of "The Terminal" Cecil adopted the kind of baby-talk voice he usually uses when talking to Esteban, and mentioned that the child listening to the program would learn how to make "ooey gooey slime that you can squish between your fingers and pour on your little sister's head."

If ANM-450 is detected outside MOTHRA Institute reach, local broadcast authorities must be contacted and instructed to shut down all outgoing signals.
Affected individuals (designated ANM-450-A) are to be contained in the Surveillance Site-450-043. ANM-450-A instances are not to be allowed to view any television programs or reflectors of any kind. Research teams are to focus on disrupting ANM-450 appearance on both cable and digital platforms.
The MOTHRA Institute keeps tabs on all television channels in the world, all of which are watched and monitored in the site already mentioned. Several individuals have been assigned to this duty, and work is carried out 24/7. Individuals who are tired are given time off, while another individual is assigned to do their job.
Description: ANM-450 refers to a recurring anomalous television program titled “The Extraordinary Mottman Show” that appears between 03:00 and 04:00 AM local time on children's networks and cartoon channels. The program, hosted by an entity calling itself "Mr. Mottman", interrupts normal programming and appears in regions where it would normally be out of the transmission range. ANM-450 exclusively targets children, often bypassing parental controls, and exploiting children who are left unsupervised.
Host Description - "Mr. Mottman" (ANM-450-1):
Mr. Mottman, designated ANM-450-1, is a humanoid figure approximately 6'2" tall (8'4") tall, wearing a pink button-down shirt and carrying two pens in his breast pocket. Despite his colorful and charming clothing, ANM-450-1 has an extremely disturbing appearance. His face is a grotesque amalgamation of several identical faces superimposed on one another, all of them bald. Each face displays exaggerated features: wide, toothy grins, tightly closed eyes, and deep laugh lines, giving the impression of uncontrollable but inaudible laughter. The faces contort in unison as Mr. Mottman moves.
When ANM-450-1 speaks, all of its faces move simultaneously, and its voice echoes with an unnatural distortion. Each episode of the show begins with ANM-450-1 emerging from a static screen, directly addressing the viewer with the following introduction:
> “I am Mr. Mottman, and today you will be our entertainment!"
This phrase precedes the start of the show, and despite the entity's "entertainer" persona, the atmosphere is overwhelmingly disturbing and malicious.
Other Entities:
In addition to ANM-450-1, the program regularly features three recurring characters/assistants:
1. The Mime (ANM-450-2): A young, pale-skinned teenage girl dressed as a mime. ANM-450-2 wears exclusively black and white clothing, including a black beret, black gloves, and makeup that includes a white base with black designs. The character communicates only through gestures and exaggerated facial expressions, never speaking. ANM-450-2 is unsettlingly silent and often performs actions that mirror the viewer's fears or insecurities.
2. Mr. Long Legs (ANM-450-3): ANM-450-3 is a disproportionate humanoid standing at 3.75 meters tall due to its elongated legs. It has albino skin and is dressed in brightly colored rainbow bell-bottom pants, held up by red suspenders. Despite its comically large frame, ANM-450-3 displays unnatural agility and participates in surreal, often disturbing skits where it uses its long legs to trap or immobilize individuals.
3. Uncle Brutus (ANM-450-4): ANM-450-4 is an obese, dirty clown figure standing 1.88 meters tall and weighing an estimated 240 kg. The subject is bald, missing front teeth, and wears a sailor-style shirt with blue stripes, coupled with mismatched colored pants or a ballerina skirt. ANM-450-4 is frequently seen consuming alcohol or smoking, and its humor is characterized by profanity and vulgar jokes. ANM-450-4’s actions often result in severe psychological distress for viewers.

Each episode of The Mottman Show follows a similar structure, starting with ANM-450-1 introducing the program and its contestants (typically children) with his characteristic phrase, the children are usually dressed in casual sailor or prisoner clothes, unaware of the danger.
