Complexity’s Snare
Beneath the silent ruins, time’s vast hand Unweaves the visions dreamt in every land. A city’s heart, once vibrant, now lies bare— Its towers fallen to complexity’s snare. We build from questions, restless and deep, Inscribing fragile order where mysteries sleep. From shifting wants, we claim what cannot remain, And conjure worlds no wisdom can sustain. Each golden age, beneath its gilded…

a show doesn't necessarily have to be ABOUT queerness to BE a queer show. it's a cultural dialect that cishets don't quite speak.
edit: i gotta clarify that the shows do indeed still have to have actual queer characters in them to count
#our flag means death#and yeah i'll say#the owl house#not just in the fact they are stuffed to the brim with queer characters#or their stories of self-transformation into who you truly are#or even that they're about outsiders finding community amongst each other#though those things certainly factor#it's that the queerness cannot be disentangled from the story without costing complexity#luz has to be neurodivergent and queer. if she wasn't the story would be about someone else#am i making sense? is this microphone on?#a couple others of note are#killing eve#renegade nell#and star trek#which cannot be made straight despite best efforts#conversely heartstopper and first kill are not queer. but that's another essay.

Writing Prompt #13
"So?" Red Hood asks, arms crossed. "Was I right?"
"Yes," Phantom says, deepening his voice, "this is one of mine."
"One of your what?" Robin growls. Nightwing's hand on his shoulder is the only thing keeping him from invading Phantom's personal space, which, please, continue to do so Mr. Nightwing, Sir.
Phantom would take a deep calming breath if a) he wasn't trying to appear as otherworldly as possible which means no human breathing and b) if that wouldn't so obviously telegraph how uncomfortable he is in the Batcave surrounded by the entire Batfamily.
Next to him Red Hood shifts in slight discomfort. His ties to the spectral realm mean he's picking up on Danny's unease even if he can't fully translate the feeling. Which is good. Danny needs to maintain what little control he has over this situation.
"There's a gh-spirit in my...realm," Phantom says, letting himself drift gently to the other side of Batman's medical table which just coincidentally puts more distance between him and the the rest of the clan staring him down. Black Bat leans forward and he violently suppresses a flinch. "They're known as Nocturne. They wield power over dreams. Their signature is all over this."
And Danny means that literally. Their ecto-signature couldn't be more apparent if they'd written it in sharpie across Batman's suit. This is what Jason—Red Hood, because Danny couldn't have been dealing with a simple civilian case of ecto-contamination, nooo, he's got to have connections to the superheroes Danny has spent the better part of his afterlife avoiding—managed to pick up on, even being the low level entity that he is.
At which point he'd called Phantom in, even though Danny had spent the better part of two weeks trying to intimidate the guy into never contacting him, Ruler of the Spirit Realm (lightning crash!), again, but here is his calling card just in case (thunder and creaking noises!!), but again, you should never use it unless things are very serious, OoOoOoOo~~~
Damn it. It's been like 10 days.
"So how do we fix it, Your, uh, Ghostliness?" Nightwing says, ducking his head in a sort of half-assed supplication when Phantom turns to him. Nightwing glances at Jason for affirmation who shrugs out of the corner of Danny's eye.
"Phantom is fine," Danny says, waving his hand and letting his upper lip curl in an expression of distaste. "Remember, it's like you're Vlad when Dad offers him a glass of eight dollar wine!" Jazz's voice reminds him. Robin growls lowly, likely meaning he's nailing it. He looks away dismissively ("Honestly, it's like you're Vlad, anytime, ever." Sam notes dryly) and thanks god he doesn't have a heart in this form because it would be beating so loud right now.
Beside him, Jason scratches compulsively at the back of his neck. Huh, his anxiety is manifesting physically as an itch. Good to know.
"You can't fix it," Phantom says. "I can."
"At what cost?" Red Robin asks. "Red Hood mentioned you'd want something in return?"
Frick. His other contingency to keep Jason from ever contacting him again. Phantom had lightly hinted his taste du jour was, uh, souls.
Something Red Hood has apparently let slip, because now Robin shakes off Nightwing's hand, puffs out his chest and declares "I will trade myself for my father's safe awakening, Spirit!"
The other members burst into denials which almost covers up Danny floating sharply back and saying "What? No!!!"
Key word: almost.
Danny coughs as they stare at him.
"That is to say, I have no desire for a child," he puts a bit of snarl into it, showing fang. The mood in the room plummets drastically as Nightwing gently grabs Robin by the arm and pulls him back to his side.
"We see," he says. He steps forward more assertively, placing himself in front of the others, all of which are now eying him warily. "Then, is there a gender you prefer?"
It takes a second to click in Danny's head and then he swings his head wildly away from his audience to hide his reaction, nausea and embarrassment turning his face bright green. "Fika Kristo," he mutters in Esperanto as quietly as he possibly can, pinching the bridge of his nose.
He gives himself a moment to settle and game plan before turning back around. "I have no desire for any of you, and it matters not. In this instance, a deal need not be struck. Nocturne is my subject, and they have done this without my permission." Danny blinks, eyes widening. "Not—not! that I would give them permission to do such a thing. In the first place. Ahem."
"Okay...so you'll do this for free?" Jason asks. "Seems like a bad business practice since you also fixed me up for nothing—"
"What he means to say, Your Majesty, Phantom, is thank you!" Signal says in a rush as Nightwing starts, "Wait, Hood, what do you mean—"
"Enough!" Phantom says loudly (nearby bats take off and Jason's itch migrates to his forearms) "I have little time," read: he has a test tomorrow and he's only one-third of the way through the study guide "And I grow tired of this...dilly-dally." Frick! Is that an old-timey word?
"Of course. Thank you again, Phantom." Nightwing says stiffly, eyes still narrowed in Hood's direction.
"Wait, sorry, Phantom, Majesty, I'm Spoiler by the way," the purple-caped vigilante Danny already knew was Spoiler says. "How do we keep this from happening again? To any of us? Is there a way to defeat this Nocturne?"
"Moreover, why Batman?" Red Robin asks. "Why would a spirit from another dimension want him asleep?"
Phantom sighs. "Nocturne was trying to send a message. To me. Through you," he says, nodding at Red Hood. "They...how do I put this. They like attention. Being the spirit of uh, dreaming, they don't receive that attention. And you were in my realms for quite some time. And they wanted...attention."
The lackluster explanation sits for a moment before "They were jealous? Of me?" Red Hood asks skeptically.
"It's more complicated than that. Your...physiology," Danny puts it as delicately as possible, watching regretfully when Red Hood still stiffens at the mention, "Is particular. You gather attention in our realm. And having my attention is...special. But not!" He says to the group at large, a touch panicked, "Romantic!"
Jesus, he's never gonna hear the end of this from the others.
"Anyway, I will ensure it does not happen again."
"By paying them attention," Spoiler says under her breath, wiggling her eyebrows at Black Bat, Red Robin shooting them both a glare. Nightwing ignores them in favor of staring at Red Hood and Phantom. Danny is unsure what Red Hood has disclosed about how he knows Danny, but now he feels confident the answer is close to nothing.
Before Nightwing can ask whatever uncomfortable thing he's about to ask, Phantom disappears. Invisibly, he hovers over Batman's sleeping body and silently apologizes for the intrusion before intangibly slipping into Batman's REM realm and finding the man...oh...
Probably thirty minutes later he reappears to the group, who all perk up at the sight of him. Their eyes bounce from him to Batman; who does not move, to the monitor; which shows no change in his brain activity.
"I'm going to need your help," Danny says to Jason, getting to the point.
"Why? What can I do?"
"It's easier if you come with me," Danny says, grabbing his arm.
"Come with—"
Danny wastes no time in turning them both invisible and flying them into Batman's mind.
"What the—" Red Hood twists and turns, taking in the hallways of the manor. From afar, they can hear the tinkling of a piano. "You, I had your word—"
"This isn't where you think it is," Danny says hurriedly. "We're in your—Batman's dream." He walks quickly down the hallway, towards the music. Jason follows.
"What?"
"The way to break a dream spell is to wake the dreamer. You can't do that externally so you do it internally. Usually you wake the dreamer by turning the dream into the nightmare, scaring them awake."
The hallway stretches on longer than realistic, the dream attempting to divert them. But it can't outrun Danny. His power seeps into the halls, ice creeping along the paneling and freezing the way behind them.
"Batman, however, is hard to scare."
"So you want me to do it."
"What? No." Phantom shoots him a confused look. "Why would I—Ahem, The other way is to convince the dreamer they are dreaming. They break the dream themselves."
"Alright..." Jason says slowly, now keeping pace with him. His breath forms a cloud as he speaks. "And you think I'm the person to do it? I'm not the one he listens to you know, that's more Nightwing's schtick, or hell, anyone other than me."
"This isn't just Batman's dream, Jason," he says. Hood's eyes narrow at his real name, but now the truth is necessary. "This is The Dream. The perfect life. Everything he could ever want."
They're approaching an opening on the right side of the corridor. A bright light emanates from it, alongside the noise of stumbling piano keys and laughter, deep and male and unrecognizable. The Dream.
"Thomas Wayne," Jason breathes. "You want me to convince Bruce it's worth walking away from the center of his universe? It'd be easier if I put a bullet in their chests."
Danny stops abruptly before the doorway, turning to face Jason.
"You know, I fixed you," he says, head cocked. "Those feelings you felt, you shouldn't be feeling them anymore."
"I...I don't."
"Then why do you act like it?" He lets himself drift up, reaching beyond their planes of existence and extending a metaphysical hand to Jason's spirit. It shivers away. "You don't have to hide behind what was."
"I'm not hiding! And I don't have to explain myself to you!" He tries to move forward but Danny puts a hand out and he cannot move past it. He growls in frustration.
"I'm grateful to you, but with or without the Pits I'm fucked up. This is just who I am. This is just what he made me."
"You've never asked why I look like this. But did you know my form is malleable?" Phantom says, letting his legs shift into a tail, letting two eyes become three. "What I believe is what I am."
And then he takes several steps back, putting the doorway between them. "From here on out, the Pits can't tell you how to think or feel. Your decisions are wholly your own. Starting with this one."
Jason stares at the doorway, then Danny.
"I won't make you," Danny says simply. "And if you desire, I will retrieve Nightwing instead."
Jason scratches at his arms, grits his teeth, and stomps through. The light resolves into the sitting room, massive windows letting in sunlight so bright it streaks yellow-white across the room. Bruce sits on the maroon versailles couch next to Cassandra, who sits cross legged, excitedly watching Alfred pour her a cup of tea. To their right, in the open space, Damian barks instructions at Tim on handling a katana. Stephanie and Duke sit on the ground besides the coffee table, homework sheets sprawled across the surface, suffering their way through a calculus problem.
Bruce, smiling softly, looks across the room to where the atrocious playing is coming from. Red Hood follows his gaze.
Sitting at the piano, trying to play while Dick distracts him with a pair of chopsticks, is Jason. He puts a hand on Dick's face and shoves, both of them hitting the wrong keys.
"Get—away—dumbass!"
"No, see, it's a duet! Jay!"
"That's not why it's named—" and Jason Todd-Wayne tips his white-tipped head back and laughs.

Mild spoiler for The Last Graduate ahead, but:
Having just reread the whole series, I love how at odds El and the Scholomance are. Like, El's pessimism is a great way of making your narrator unreliable, since El is sometimes right and sometimes wrong always expecting the worst response from everyone around her(a thought worthy of another entire post), but it becomes very funny once she realizes that part of the problem at school is that she can't do small spells? Like, she spends the whole first book being like 'this school is the devil tempting me to evil, it wants me to become a maleficier, I can't even ask for a simple cleaning spell without getting horrible spells for summoning mortal flames and enslaving an army of people, I hate it', and meanwhile the Scholomance is flipping frantically through its catalogue of spells gathered over thousands of years, desperately trying to find a spell in a language El knows that she can also cast with her affinity for working incredibly large and powerful spells. El's over here driving a bulldozer and saying, 'I would like to build a Jenga tower' and the Scholomance is looking at her with the weary despair of a preschool teacher knowing they're going to be suffering through a temper tantrum soon but unable to stop it.
El, a furious teenager who doesn't know as much as she thinks she does: I don't wanna summon a mortal flame! I want my room clean!
The Scholomance, a giant building that cleans its own hallways, floors, dishes and various and assorted other workings with mortal flame: Why is this child testing me
Also hilarious in retrospect is El's blithe statement in the first book about how no one would ever give her that much mana to do these high volume spells bc mana isn't free or easy to acquire and so the school is clearly telling her to turn maleficier and kill her fellow students all while Orion is humming to himself as he kills mals and dumps oodles and oodles of mana into the New York power sharers.
El "I'd rather die than ask for help" Higgins: I won't do these spells bc no one will give me mana
The Scholomance, as loudly as a building who may or may not be partially sentient and who can't speak human languages: Wow, those sure are some HIGH MANA VOLUME spells you got there! If only there was SOMEONE around who would be able to provide you with a NIGH LIMITLESS FLOW OF MANA so that you'd be able to cast them!
Orion: :)
El: *hisses like a feral cat*
Orion: :(
The Scholomance: oh my freaking god
Hilarious. Top tier humor.
#the scholomance#a deadly education#the last graduate#naomi novik#I also truly believe that the scholance was trying to prep El for her future by giving her those spells#she ends up being able to use her knowledge of several of those spells to useful and non-malicious effects in the last two books#but it's funny to imagine a very tired scholomance trying to find enough complex and high mana-cost spells#to placate the bewildering moral whims of this angry wizard child

On the night Yang Cheng became the New E-Soul, the first person who called him by name was Shang Chao.

me staring into the distance:
so the evanuris/blight situation is that: solas managed to, at the height of his power + with all his ancient elf besties helping, seal them into the black city and make the veil. and this took so much out of him that he was basically comatose for 5000 years. ok fine.
but then in vg, his initial plan was to put them in a different jail, while the veil is still up (despite that weakening all magic significantly and making it difficult to even access the black city). and then he wants to tear down the veil afterwards, presumably expecting to still be awake to do so. despite not having his original orb or his ancient elf besties anymore? so it doesn't particularly make sense in general. similar to how he described what he wanted to do with the orb, you'd expect him to take out the veil first and then reseal/move the jail?
(and then he wanted to put them into a Regret Prison when he is the ONLY one out of that entire situation who feels any regrets... 😭)
then his more ambiguous-sounding veil removal motives of being depressed about elves/spirits and unable to see the modern world as worthy of existence... become almost irrelevant. bc it's kind of necessary for him to Do Something? or else everyone fully dies of turbo blight when the archdemons die and the black city inevitably opens?
but then no one really mentions the looming catastrophe of the blight part, and they handwave it at the end, and all act like he's being very unreasonable. which he is! but only bc they made him dumber than a rock and weirdly inconsistent in his capabilities, not bc his motivations were actually proven to be wrong. aaaaa.
#veilguard critical#txt#i'm going to be honest. the regret prison was like#SO goofy as a concept imo#like yeah ofc it'll trap solas dreadwolf. guy who regrets every action ever taken in his entire life starting from day 1#the well known sunk cost fallacy king#why would it trap... a bunch of self absorbed dictators...#elgar'nan peacefully: ''i've thought about it and i'm great actually. never did anything wrong 😌'' and leaves#''ahhh it's about PROCESSING regret-!'' well unfortunately that's still very unconvincing#rook had a small handful of regrets and just walked out no problem#presumably the evanuris have even fewer and milder regrets?#elgar'nan like ''hm. i regret not killing my wife sooner! ok i've processed it. time to leave 😌''#ghilan'nain like ''i regret not making my ultimate creation: three crocodiles a halla and an elf mashed together. would've been fun''#????#like putting a rat in a box made of cheese...#it would make way more sense if the evanuris made it in the black city as a way to trap solas while they were in their time out tbh#vg's whole plot is just like#a series of ''don't worry about it kitten'' missing threads#and it does seem like they never fully decided on whether they wanted his plan to be ''necessary'' or not#so they flip flopped between making it sound like a guilt-fueled nostalgia thing that he should be talked out of or stopped#versus a genuine trolley problem that is just Too Unspeakably Dire to reveal#and then decided there could not be any moral complexity so trolley problems are as bad as the worst version of the plan. fhsjfbh#personally the regret prison is my stupid google doc bc i unfortunately need to consider this for solas' internal narration 😔#at any given time i am the pepe silvia diagram meme...

I think Bonnie deserves a nice hot cocoa after everything, with marshmallows and whipped cream on top. They need something nice to cry into as the party tries their best to explain what happened to Frin in a child safe way, while Siffrin sleeps away their exhaustion and can't correct anything. Bonnie really just needs a nice hot cocoa.
#Isat#Isat spoilers#Isat bonnie#Isat siffrin#Looks into the middle distance. Yeah Bonnie is going to be mega traumatized by everything and probably has a bit of a complex#Later in life about taking care of everyone no matter the cost to themself. More Other Tai stuff cuz my brain won’t stop buzzing. I’m trying to figure out what has been Taissa and what has been Other Tai all season, and like. Some of it is very clear—the channeling the Wilderness after the partial remission, the ordering of a stupid amount of (meat-based) food, the moment where she falls back asleep after waking up so abruptly as “real Tai”. But some of it is just as clearly Taissa. The regret after the waiter death reveal, the panic about the no-eyed man in the commercial, calling Lottie, and even seeing Sammy all feels like Taissa. Frankly, most of her early interactions with Van also feel like Tai. So…I kind of get the sense that as long as Tai is happy or content, she’s herself. Or mostly herself. But the more stressed she gets? The Other is there to do the hard shit. To keep Tai from dealing with the worst of it. I get the feeling the worse things get, the tighter Other Tai holds on to that wheel. Stuffs Taissa down into the dark. “Shhh, shh, go to sleep. I’ll handle this.” And of course that would result in horror, because: duh. But also it’s gonna make it so much more obvious to Van. Because when Tai is happy, going on dates, having sex, being in love? That’s Tai. But when she’s doing insane shit, and ignoring their friend’s death, and trying to murder people for Van’s sake? Yeah, that’s hard to discount.
#yellowjackets#yj spoilers#taissa turner#taivan#I really think it’s both#because both ARE tai I will go to the grave insisting this#but if the other is trying to just cling to happiness at all costs#saying ‘listen I let you drive for 25 years and you aren’t happy. aren’t even content. so it’s my turn’#of course she’s ignoring complexity#of course she’s pouting like a teenager when she’s called on it#of course she’s shoving the ‘main’ tai down#‘I’m making us happy. I’m doing what needs to be done.’#I really think it does a disservice to assume it’s ALL been other tai#i doubt that very much#but seeing the man while kissing van and not panicking? other tai#lighting a candle to the wilderness? other tai#shrugging off a probable murder to have spa time? def other tai#she’s just gonna get to run things more and more the worse tai feels#to try to ‘fix it’

yall know I don't fuck with Luke, but he lowkey is the most misunderstood/mischaracterized person in the whole series...
Like him going rogue and joining Kronos has everything to do with his wraith with the gods and nothing to do with wanting better for demigods
But in the last book, him dying by his hands has everything he could do to correct his many mistakes and nothing to do with Gods.
Both things can be true at the same time !!!! If Book 1 or 2 Luke had died, he would not dedicate his last words to fallen demigods or wanting better for them because he has a character arc !
When Luke first started, he was so focused on getting revenge that he did not care about all the demigods that became casualties, like Chris, who was literally driven to insanity, but since then he was unwillingly possessed by Kronos (a complete erasure of his own autonomy). He realized the destruction he wreaked with his desire for revenge, but it was too late for him.
Luke is the tale of how focusing on vengeance without consideration of who you support just to extract revenge on the person who hurt you is a slippery slope; an enemy of your enemy is your friend until you too get burned.
And its very late so idk how coherently I am expressing my thoughts but maybe you get my point
#me: not to defend him#also me: defends him#luke is a very complex character whose complexities sometimes gets lost and only one facet gets recognition#most of fandom assign him as a byronic hero which he is NOT#he had a really awful childhood & did not have a good support system so he wanted to wrong the gods who wronged him no matter the cost#& in the end kronos wronged him more than the gods ever did him but he was helpless because he did not even have autonomy over his own body#such a tragedy#luke castellan#percy jackson meta#kinda#percy jackson#percy jackon and the olympians#perseas-wellyboots#pjo meta

i contain multitudes and can say that i am a little :( about vex and percy being teammates with benefits because i think there’s something particularly heartbreaking about the dynamic that was neither of them ever said a thing even though they both were aware of it and it took losing percy for vex to finally admit it and Even Then, she couldn’t say it to percy’s face when they got him back, percy was the one who had to make the first move (that they were both alive for at least) and he was only able to do that because he’d heard her confession, because he never would’ve thought otherwise. to be clear, i also very much enjoy the story being told, i think i just wish they’d maybe committed more significantly to This Is A Campaign-Inspired Story Rather Than A Retelling sooner in the show so that maybe there would be a bit more grounding or set-up for the storylines the narrative is focusing on (and i understand why they wouldn’t), because i think they’re doing very well with percy’s arc for example, because they started with focusing on his and keeping his beats mostly the same and that seems to be much the same case as some of his second wave of meaty character stuff has arrived. but with vex they’ve aimed for the same character beats but it doesn’t always feel as earned or really feel like much character at all; i think saundor particularly was a bit of an :/, since in the campaign it was really a catalyst for vex interrogating her role in the party and her morality and something she struggled to get over and that haunted her far beyond the walls of that tree, but in the show it hasn’t really had a clear impact on vex beyond the scope of the episode itself — syldor certainly has, but the challenge that saundor presented didn’t really have much weight beyond its moment. and obviously a large part of that’s also probably just, 7 protagonists and wanting to expand the perspectives to antagonists and give more room for side characters is a lot of things to cover. and, i say with love, perhaps a bit too ambitious for a 12 episode per season, ~22 minute runtime show if they want their characters to have the kind of depth that really makes campaign 1 shine the way it does.
#rambly thoughts sponsored by early morning haze and complex feelings about different medium storytelling#but i truly do question the choice to have such expansive parts of the story be showing the perspectives of antagonists or side characters#especially when it has a clear cost on the consistency of character depth#i think vex in particular suffers from it because she’s such an internal character that to get the most compelling of her beats right#a Lot of care has to be put into it#but as it is#a lot of the vex story beats are only really felt if you have the c1 knowledge to recognize them#obvs i think there’s likely a more obvious one upcoming#but . i miss vex who only cared about vox machina to the degree that it made her morally shitty to others#and i’m :( we won’t get to see that journey in the show. but alas! that’s what the campaign is for#this also is like. the continually questionable choice to change the trinket backstory in kith and kin having rippling consequences#to be clear this is in no way a like. i think there’s favouritism or anything i have no doubt in the casts ability to advocate for themselve#that said i do think that maybe their choices aren’t always the strongest writing wise !#my complaints or critiques tend to be ones about vex in particular because she is my blorbo of all time#but in general if not for my love of cr i don’t know if i think tlovm is a particularly strong story. it’s entertaining certainly#tlovm spoilers#tlovm#critical role#cr1 spoilers

#web weaving#kudos to @abby118 for posted the 3rd image up. it was very inspiring(TM) so i stole it#webweaving#i just. idk i just wonder if Loki genuinely felt unloved while being raised#''no matter how much you claimed to love me''#like they made claims. they weren't telling the truth#they didn't love him but they loved thor#why did they love thor so much that there was none to spare for him?#i wonder if he thought like that at any point#if he saw thor's banishment to midgard and considered for even a moment that maybe thor wasn't loves so much either?#that they both pulled the short straw#except loki knows why he knows what he did wrong and that can't be corrected exactly#but he can still taint thor#he can say to thor's face that banishing thor strained odin so much the old man passed away and have it believed#would loki ever believe such a thing if it was said to him?#that his parents cared to that extent?#did they ever#thor's humility arc too... he really had his brother lie to him. and then his brother was gone. no answers about why.#a father who would banish him a mother who wouldn't speak up when he was banished#he wasn't loved as much as he thought. he wasn't as perfect as he thought and that cost him his brother?#it cost him too much to learn an old lesson he should have known#do you think thor resented loki for that too#i think they should have complex emotions @ each other about how they were raised. btw

the worst part is i can't even say he's wrong. they certainly did figure out how to contribute the city by joining the wrgp. but like. this is one of those things where it literally does not make sense. this is insane levels of logic. "we're not sure how to contribute to the city. we think entering a magic the gathering tournament will help." like. imagine saying that fr when your parents ask what you're going to do after you graduate college. "idk. thought i'd play card games and figure it out, man"
#yugioh 5ds#yusei fudo#anya rewatches yugioh 5ds sub#i'm cackling over this#like dude you FUCKIN SAVED THE CITY#ushio calling this out too with like ''uhm. you guys kinda saved the city? you don't have to prove anything?''#and they never fully answer why they feel they have to prove something#they just do#arguably this implies an insane level of overachieving from yusei crow and jack#since they're not satisfied with JUST saving the city#but like. it does kinda suck that neither crow nor jack got to move on from playing card games with this set up?#yusei moves on to working on the moment - that works SO MUCH with this statement#and their statements made here#i suppose if you take jack's ''the team that wins will have glory'' statement at face value him continuing to do dueling also makes sense#but it also DOESN'T because like. he ALREADY HAD glory. he's the fuckin former king#this tournament changes nothing. he continues on as if he's still trying to reach it#and it just. there's a lot with jack's writing this season i WILL NOT get into#but oh my god jack atlas is a woman to me the way she was mishandled#and crow's... a lot of it falls so fuckin flat#the three boys were ROBBED but also yusei fully never gets to ever reclaim being a teenager#he ends the series forced into a role he never once indicated he wanted#following the footsteps of his father who he never once indicated he wanted to follow the footsteps of#yusei's character suffers because the show never bothers to address this constant hero complex he has#it's never confronted in any MEANINGFUL way like atem and judai's were#atem's hero complex cost him everything in the waking the dragons arc for example#and judai's led him straight down the path of becoming the supreme king#but for yusei? it's never like. deconstructed. ever.#and it feels like suuuuch a missed moment to go hey yusei. you do not have to be the hero of the city. you are a teenage boy.#what you have done for the city IS ENOUGH you do not owe your life to everyone
