Unmaintained dependencies
A recent online discussion made me think about all the open-source software (OSS) I use regularly and in particular how much of it might be no longer maintained.
My curiosity was piqued. I decided to list my software dependencies with the dates their last-known releases. Here are the ones that are more than a year old:
2010-05-20 jmf v2.1.1e 2012-01-11 imgscalr-lib v4.2 2013-01-25 org.apache.commons.io v2.4 2021-02-13 junit4 v4.13.2 2022-01-11 jcommander v1.82 2022-04-05 lemur v1.16.0 2022-04-05 lemur-props v1.2.0 2022-04-05 lemur-proto v1.13.0 2022-04-24 Bullet v3.2.5 2023-01-26 sim-math v1.6.0 2023-11-02 jmh v0.7.2 2024-01-01 commons-exec v1.4.0 2024-01-28 jinput v2.0.10 2024-02-29 de.undercouch.download v5.6.0 2024-04-08 actions-gh-pages v4.0.0
While there are many reasons a project might not publish a release for 12 months, it seems to me a valid cause for concern.

If two different games run on the same basic engine (ex: Source, UE4/5, Unity), how much does the “If it runs on the same engine, it can or should have features 1 and 2 as the other,” carry for post-release development games?
Tumblr media
Those arguments don't really hold water at all. Games are more than just the sum of their parts. Making all of the pieces work together cohesively is a huge amount of work. Every game is a complex web of features and content. Any given feature is dependent on a bevy of other systems and features and any failures can easily cascade into catastrophe. One of my acquaintances works on the Call of Duty franchise - she told me that they often have difficulty porting features between the single and multiplayer versions of the game due to the way the technology is set up. It can take days of engineering and scripting to bring a feature from DMZ to regular multiplayer or another game mode.

conversations of amatonormativity and consent overlap a lot and should be discussed side by side more frequently. because when you live in a society that teaches you that you’re supposed to want sex and romance, that you may want to say no in the moment but you shouldn’t say no forever, any statements about consent get muddied. you cannot at once preach that consent is vital and “you can always say no” and also insist that people should give sex and romance a try, even when they express disinterest, telling them “eventually you’ll find the right person.”
