“Hello, this is Danielle with an update. I am beside myself with worry and heartbreak for Tareq and his family and trying to make sense of a world where we are collectively allowing this to happen. I am not even sure what to do other than to share this with this community of people who also cares about this family. These are Tareq’s words from today:

‘swear to you, my dear friend, I truly wish for death rather than continuing to live in this world and in this kind of life. I swear, my children and I have been going to sleep hungry for days. I can barely provide them with anything that eases their hunger or gives them the slightest sense of comfort.

Even the most basic items, like flour, cost no less than $500 per sack—and we barely have any food to eat. I feel completely helpless. I truly don’t know what more I can possibly do.

Even za’atar, dukkah, and olive oil—the simplest things to put in a piece of bread—I can’t afford to buy. And if I do manage to get them, we need at least 1 kilo per week because that’s literally the only thing we have to eat with bread. But a kilo of za’atar or dukkah now costs more than $100… and a liter of olive oil, if we find it, is over $50!

I can barely keep up with my daughter Tala’s needs. A single pack of diapers costs $100, and she needs at least three packs every month. She also needs a can of baby formula every week, and now even that costs $50 or more.

Installing Linux (Mint) as a Non-Techy Person

I've wanted Linux for various reasons since college. I tried it once when I no longer had to worry about having specific programs for school, but it did not go well. It was a dedicated PC that was, I believe, poorly made. Anyway.

In the process of deGoogling and deWindows365'ing, I started to think about Linux again. Here is my experience.

Pre-Work: Take Stock

List out the programs you use regularly and those you need. Look up whether or not they work on Linux. For those that don't, look up alternatives.

If the alternative works on Windows/Mac, try it out first.

Make sure you have your files backed up somewhere.

Also, pick up a 5GB minimum USB drive.

Oh and make a system restore point (look it up in your Start menu) and back-up your files.

Step One: Choose a Distro

Dear god do Linux people like to talk about distros. Basically, from what all I've read, if you don't want to fuss a lot with your OS, you've got two options: Ubuntu and Linux Mint. Ubuntu is better known and run by a company called Canonical. Linux Mint is run by a small team and paid for via donations.

I chose Linux Mint. Some of the stuff I read about Ubuntu reminded me too much of my reasons for wanting to leave Windows, basically. Did I second-guess this a half-dozen times? Yes, yes I did.

The rest of this is true for Linux Mint Cinnamon only.

Step Two: Make your Flash Drive

Linux Mint has great instructions. For the most part they work.

Start here:

The trickiest part of creating the flash drive is verifying and authenticating it.

On the same page that you download the Linux .iso file there are two links. Right click+save as both of those files to your computer. I saved them and the .iso file all to my Downloads folder.

Then, once you get to the 'Verify your ISO image' page in their guide and you're on Windows like me, skip down to this link about verifying on Windows.

Once it is verified, you can go back to the Linux Mint guide. They'll direct you to download Etchr and use that to create your flash drive.

If this step is too tricky, then please reconsider Linux. Subsequent steps are both easier and trickier.

Step Three: Restart from your Flash Drive

This is the step where I nearly gave up. The guide is still great, except it doesn't mention certain security features that make installing Linux Mint impossible without extra steps.

(1) Look up your Bitlocker recovery key and have it handy.

I don't know if you'll need it like I did (I did not turn off Bitlocker at first), but better to be safe.

(2) Turn off Bitlocker.

(3) Restart. When on the title screen, press your Bios key. There might be more than one. On a Lenovo, pressing F1 several times gets you to the relevant menu. This is not the menu you'll need to install, though. Turn off "Secure Boot."

(4) Restart. This time press F12 (on a Lenovo). The HDD option, iirc, is your USB. Look it up on your phone to be sure.

Now you can return to the Linux Mint instructions.

Figuring this out via trial-and-error was not fun.

Step Four: Install Mint

Just follow the prompts. I chose to do the dual boot.

You will have to click through some scary messages about irrevocable changes. This is your last chance to change your mind.

I chose the dual boot because I may not have anticipated everything I'll need from Windows. My goal is to work primarily in Linux. Then, in a few months, if it is working, I'll look up the steps for making my machine Linux only.

Some Notes on Linux Mint

Some of the minor things I looked up ahead of time and other miscellany:

(1) HP Printers supposedly play nice with Linux. I have not tested this yet.

(2) Linux Mint can easily access your Windows files. I've read that this does not go both ways. I've not tested it yet.

(3) You can move the taskbar (panel in LM) to the left side of your screen.

(4) You are going to have to download your key programs again.

(5) The LM software manager has most programs, but not all. Some you'll have to download from websites. Follow instructions. If a file leads to a scary wall of strange text, close it and just do the Terminal instructions instead.

(6) The software manager also has fonts. I was able to get Fanwood (my favorite serif) and JetBrains (my favorite mono) easily.

In the end, be prepared for something to go wrong. Just trust that you are not the first person to ever experience the issue and look it up. If that doesn't help, you can always ask. The forums and reddit community both look active.

Update Sep 5: Farah's condition is declining and she needs to evacuate within the week. Awaiting additional details.

The Haboub family consists of 4 people - the twins Mohammed and Farah, and their parents.

Mohammed was shot in the leg and Farah had to undergo surgery for her injury in the Khan Younis Al-Tabieen school massacre.

The donation funds mostly went towards outrageously expensive survival costs, such as Farah's $2,400 USD surgery and the $3,000 rent - both of which we just barely managed to pay for last month.

It was crucial to keep the family housed as the twins have injuries that were more likely to get infected if they were out on the streets.

Now there's a new plan - the twins plan to get evacuated in September to pursue their studies. Both are studying software engineering and have excellent grades.

This is $10,000 USD for 2 adults ($5,000 each), which comes to 102,852 SEK. The campaign goal is now 234,000 SEK, or $22,751 USD.

There's still the $3,000 rent for next month, but it's less of a priority if the twins are evacuated as they were the ones most at risk if the family became homeless.

Update on my current situation

For anyone who wants a backstory. I was assault last year which landed me with a fractured jaw and missing front tooth. The first surgery landed me in major debt and I was at rest of losing my place to stay. Fast track to these past couple of weeks. My jaw shifted again and I needed revision surgery, which landed me in even more debt that I still have to pay off. But I managed to get the surgery done thanks to you all.

However with everything going on and all of my previous warnings I was evicted from my place and have since been out of place to live. I and many on my friend on here have been sharing and trying raise the first half of rent and the deposit to be able to room with someone who offered. I am thankfully we raised the first half and I am here safe. Thank to everyone who helped 🤍

Literally the only thing otw-archive collects as information about its users. That's it.

This is literally all anyone can see from the back-end of otw-archive, which runs AO3, CFAA, Ad Astra, superlove and SquidgeWorld Archive. The software collects no real user data. The IP address shown here is the localhost, which means we can't even see your IP address from the software itself. You have to legitimately go into the back-end server logs and play 'find one of the millions of unique users and somehow -- almost impossibly -- match their IP to a username'. But even if they somehow managed to miracle that into existence, you could defeat it in two seconds flat with a VPN. Not that it's likely they could.

This should hopefully demystify exactly what all AO3 really collects on its users. It's not much. It even makes it pretty hard to stop spammers/scammers/other bad actors because they collect so little. Even on my comparatively tiny archives, I had someone circumvent a ban because there was no way to prove it was them until they slipped up and screwed up.

Even then, if somehow they knew your username and IP address (almost impossible) there's no way AO3 knows your wallet names. Not even if you're a member and donate; they intentionally keep their archive userbase and donation databases separate!

Your identity is safer on an otw-archive installation than it is on almost any other website out there. Not only isn't OTW selling your information, they don't actually have any to sell.

I hope this helps people feel a little more informed and safer. I'm running the exact same software AO3 runs on, so you're seeing here all we can see in terms of user data.

The war has been going on for almost 6 months, and I did not think about taking refuge here on gofundme, but when my family and I lost the entire house, I had to create this donation, hoping for your generosity and understanding of the magnitude of the disaster that befell us here. From a young man who has less than a year left to obtain his university degree, a comfortable job, and my own house, I thought about every detail when building this. To a person without a degree, job, or home, and unfortunately without dreams as well now. After I lost everything I mentioned previously, which is almost everything I own, and logically all of this will be compensated with the passage of days, but I own something very beautiful that cannot be replaced at all, which is my family (my mother and my brothers ) And after I saw that this war was eating away everything green and dry, and burning everything in its path: people, dreams, and plans.
