Shelter - Dr. Alan Grant x Reader | Fluff / Smut
Summary: Alan would do anything to distract his girlfriend, who is afraid of storms.
Word Count: 396 - Short fic
Date Posted: 05.24.23
TW: AFAB language used, descriptions of sex.
Note: Smut under the cut. This was an experiment in creating a scene using minimal dialogue. This was a vanilla scene, surprisingly challenging me as a BDSM content creator.

Rain pelted the roof of Alan’s trailer at the Snakewater dig site. Not a soul was out digging while this storm hung over them, shaking the trailers and assaulting the tents. The tight quarters of the trailer had been more than enough for you and Alan for the past three months, though you were expected to clear out by late autumn before the first snowfall.
Alan had you wrapped up in his arms, your ear pressed firmly against his chest, trying to use his heartbeat to drown out the thunder. Every few minutes or so, he’d kiss your head, whispering comforting words. Most people didn’t get to see this side of Alan. He hid away the sweet man who took care of the ones he loved.
Thunder cracked across the sky, shaking the trailer with fury, making you squeal and hold him close. Alan gently kissed your forehead, then each cheek, and the tip of your nose before finally pressing a firm kiss to your lips. Your hand wound its way to tangle in his hair and matched his passion. No words needed to be spoken at that moment; you both knew what you wanted to distract you from the storm raging outside.
He slowly dragged his hand up the length of your body. Your thin pajamas do nothing to block the heat from his calloused palm. Gently he worked his hand underneath your top, grazing over your taut nipples, making you let out a sharp breath at their sensitivity. Alan kissed down your chin, latching onto your neck, surely leaving a hickey in place.
Time seemed to slow as you both stripped out of your clothes. The whole world fell away as you lost yourself in Alan’s love. He peppered kisses over your chest as he bottomed out, staying still for a moment so you could adjust to his size. Once you were comfortable, he pulled nearly all the way out before easing himself back in again. Each long slow stroke grazed your g-spot, sending waves of pleasure through you.
Alan spent what felt like hours that night coaxing you to orgasm over and over, never taking his own release until he was assured that you were fully and completely satisfied.
“Do you hear that?” He whispered to you as your exhausted bodies collapsed on the couch.
“No? What?” You chuckled.
“The storm has passed.”

Thinking about how Dr. Grant is very likely apprehensive to get into relationships, whether they be romantic or platonic or anything of the like, and as such he likes to keep most people at an arm's length. He'll drown himself in his work just to keep himself away from people, spending hours upon hours working to the point of exhaustion because he'd much rather be left to his own devices than interact with anyone.
But, at the very same time, he's so touch starved and craves to be loved in any and every way a person can be loved. How he wants to be able to freely go out for lunch or dinner with a few friends and laugh about anything and everything. How he wants to wind down after a long day with a partner, eating a warm dinner and conversing softly and taking care of one another. How he wants to come up behind a partner a kiss them softly on the shoulder, to sway with them as music plays in the background of whatever setting they're in.
How, all in all, he just wants to form a connection with someone that's irreplaceable. But- it's as though he doesn't feel like he's worthy of such a thing, and so as much as he dreams and desires a strong relationship and connection with someone, he's too scared to do it because, deep down, he knows his distant personality will get in the way and he'll end up pushing said person away. He's scared of so many things, all of which can be refuted, but if anything that scares him more.
He just wants to think he's unlovable. Call it pitiful, if you will, but it's what he genuinely thinks.

Hey! I just want to say that I love your story about Alan Grant and as I saw you are open to requests can I ask an Alan!hurt story? Maybe he is injured during Jurassic park while trying to protect the kids and Ellie has to help him to get out of there, but will they make it? All angst possible would be great and a happy ending would be even better. I hope it’s not bother. Thank you!
Tumblr media
A/N: This seems like an Alan x Ellie & I don't write character x character but I'll make you a deal. I'll make the character a paleobotanist friend of Alan & you can just replace Y/N with Ellie. For the sake of continuity, I'll just kind of lightly remove Ellie from the storyline so that you can add her in the Y/N place.
Pairing(s): Alan Grant x GN!Paleobotanist!Reader
Contains: A lot of movie content, jealous Alan unable to control his emotions, fear of death, sad Alan, (I literally didn't follow the request, I'm sorry. Explained at the bottom)
"Why don't you come down, just the pair of ya', for the weekend? I'd love the opinion of a paleobotanist as well!" Hammond's words rang in your head as you sat next to Alan in the helicopter.
Yes, you were technically getting a lot of funding for your dig just to do this trip but the selling point was really getting to spend time with Alan outside of digging up bones. You felt as though Alan was just here for the money but honestly, the thought of spending more time with you had Alan extremely excited. You both managed to think the other had no interest & you were just friends.
Alan sat at the window seat, playing with his velociraptor claw. You hadn't realized you were zoning out watching him, his brows furrowed as he spun the small object between his fingers.
"So you two- uh, dig up- dig up dinosaurs?" Ian pulled your attention away from Alan.
You let out a laugh, "Well."
"Try to," Alan spoke softly with an equally soft smile on his face.
Ian let out an awkward yet somehow adorable laugh then looked you up & down. He had once already when you weren't looking but he wanted you to know he thought you were attractive.
"You'll have to excuse Dr. Malcolm, he suffers from a deplorable excess of personality. Especially for a mathematician," Hammond practically apologized as he turned to you.
"It's fine, it's sweet," you laughed, not noticing Alan turn away, not wanting to hear this.
"Chaotician! Chaotician actually, John doesn't subscribe to chaos, particularly what it has to say about his little science project."
"Hoggswallop, Ian. You have never been able in sufficiently explain your-"
"Oh, John, John, John because the behavior of the system is faith-based-"
"A load, if I may say, of fashionable number crunching."
The two continued bickering & you stretched in your seat.
"Dr. L/N, Dr. Grant, you've heard of chaos theory?" Ian asked, hopeful.
"No," you looked at Alan.
"No, non-linear equations? Strange attractors?" Ian paused as you shook your head, "Dr. L/N, I-I refuse to believe that you are unfamiliar with the concept of attraction."
You blushed & gave Ian a smile, Alan would be lying if he said this didn't make him upset. He tried his best not to give you the cold shoulder after that.
It got to time for lunch & you all sat down. You were a little shocked when Alan didn't sit next to you but you brushed it off. Opinions on the park quickly became the topic of conversation. You agreed wholeheartedly with Ian. Maybe it was the flirting with Ian, no, it was definitely the flirting. Despite agreeing with the two of you, Alan's mind was clouded with jealousy. To avoid conflict, Alan stood up & walked out of the room. The plan would've worked if you hadn't followed, worried about him.
"Alan! What's wrong?"
He couldn't stop himself, "Leave me alone Y/N. Go hang out with Dr. Malcolm. You clearly enjoy his presence more than mine."
"Alan, that's not-"
"Just- shut up, Y/N!"
You were shocked, unable to even respond. Alan knew he hurt you but his conscience wasn't loud enough to get him to apologize. You walked outside quietly, ironically, Ian Malcolm had seen the entire thing & ran to your aid. His arm found its place on your shoulders but you quickly shrugged it off.
"Not the time, Dr. Malcolm."
He muttered an apology & John Hammond finally caught up to the group with two kids in tow. He announced that you'd be split into two cars & you quickly announced, "I'll sit with the kids."
You were upset with Alan but saving him from spending time with two kids (Knowing he hates children) was second nature at this rate. You always handled field trips to the dig site & grew to like kids. Maybe they could distract you from your previous argument.
The tour had turned around due to the storm. The kids kept you distracted but Alan's words still floated in your mind. Alan mindlessly stared at the back of your head the whole trip. His apology was stuck at the back of his throat still, he couldn't tell if he was mad at you or himself. Ian managed to worsen his mood by asking if you were available. He was about ready to yell at Ian when the fence broke. The two of them went dead silent & watched the series of stupid decisions that the children made despite you telling them not to. The car was flipped upside down & Alan ran to your aid while Ian distracted the T-Rex.
"Y/N, grab my hand!" Alan instructed as he kneeled down into the mud, reaching his hand as far as he could into the car.
You insisted that he helped the kids first, pushing Lex towards Alan. There wasn't enough time to get you or Tim out because the T-Rex had returned, pushing the car around. You wound up hitting your head hard against the dash as the car was pushed off the cliff, effectively knocking you out. When Alan made it to the floor he set Lex down & ran to the tree, calling out for you. Alan hates trees, heights, all of it, but he has never climbed faster. As he got closer he could hear Tim crying.
"Please wake up, please!" he repeated, shaking you by the shoulders.
Alan assumed the worst, completely shouting, "Tim what happened?!"
"Y/N won't move! I think they're-" Tim stopped, unable to finish his sentence as Alan finally saw you.
You had a couple abrasions & cuts, otherwise fine, but Alan couldn't tell in this light. He cursed under his breath.
"Come on, kid. I'll get Y/N after you're out."
Tim hesitated but he got up soon after & Alan directed him to begin climbing down. Alan paused to just look at you for a moment. If you really are dead this might as well be the worst day of his life. He yelled at you, the person who understood him & cared for him.
"I'm so sorry, Y/N," he couldn't speak over a whisper as he entered the car, trying to grab you.
He moved forward cautiously, knowing that the car was suspended by a few vines & weak branches. He sat against the floor of the car, pulling your head into his lap. You were so peaceful & now that he was close, he could see that you were breathing. The wave of worries slowly washed away. I wish I could say that was the end of this nightmare of a trip.
Within seconds of Alan grabbing you, the car jerked downward. The branches were breaking. Tim screamed & began climbing down faster. Alan froze for a moment, cursing himself for letting you end up in this situation. He protected your head with one arm & braced himself against the passenger seat with the other. He held you tight, repeating apologies like that would somehow save you as each & every branch broke beneath the car. He wanted to tell you he loved you at this moment. You were unconscious & likely about to die but he wanted you to know. He was being burned by fate, he waited too long & treated you like shit today. This is all his fault. The words were stuck in his throat as you continued to fall.
You hit the ground hard, still in the car with Alan. The pain jolted you awake. Alan was dazed & In shock. You both somehow lived & you were staring at him, terrified. You led him out from under the car. The kids ran up, celebrating that you both had lived. Alan wouldn't talk, just staring at you with wide eyes. You instructed the kids to hide in a nearby tree & wait for you. They complained but listened.
"Alan? Are you okay?" You spoke with a hand on his shoulder.
You were met with Alan swallowing, trying still to figure out how to speak again. Your hands moved to cup his cheek.
"Alan, I don't understand. Are you still mad at me? What's going-"
He pulled you by the shirt into a kiss. It was short & sweet. His shaky hands found your cheeks as yours fell to your lap.
"I-I'm not mad, I'm- I'm sorry, this is my fault."
"How could this be your fault?"
"I yelled at you. I yelled when I shouldn't have. I wanted to apologize but I didn't. I love you! I love you, Y/N!"
You didn't even hesitate before pulling Alan into a deeper kiss. Only after you both needed to gasp for air did you consider pulling away. You rested your forehead on his, smiling in the thick of this horrible nightmare jungle.
"I love you too."
A/N: I'm working on my like month old requests. Shhhhhh. Also, I totally didn't follow the request. I just realized this is completely different from what you asked (LIke I said this is like a month later & I had this half-written already) as I am writing this second a/n. I'm sorry lol, request again & I'll do it but I like this one.

It All Started At Jurassic Park - Ian Malcolm X Female Reader
Tumblr media
Title: It All Started At Jurassic Park
Ian Malcolm X Female Reader
Additional Characters: John Hammond, Dr. Henry Wu, Alan, and Ellie
| Part 2 | Part 3 |
WC: 1,436
Warnings: N/A
Checking her clipboard, the scientist took notes on the unhatched eggs, analyzing them as the robot arm gently picked them up and turned them, keeping them warm. Jotting down a few notes, the female scientist made her way to her co-worker, passing off her notes and heading to her desk. Sitting down at her computer, she made sure to add anything to her notes digitally, and made sure to fill out her paperwork for the day before her lunch break.
Y/N L/N worked for John Hammond, as a paleontologist in his growing theme park, Jurassic Park. Somehow the man had brought dinosaurs back to life, and when he came to her, offering her a job as a baby dinosaur caretaker, she couldn’t say no.
Y/N had been working for John for a very long time. She had been one of the first few people who joined and began working at Jurassic Park. It was an amazing new start for Y/N and her boring life. She never thought, in her wildest dreams, that she would ever get the chance to see a dinosaur in real life, that wasn’t just bones. She felt very fortunate for being chosen to do this job. She was three years out of college, studying and majoring in Paleontology, Marine Biology, and Earth Science. For all of University and College, she had been working as a part-time barista, and she never thought she would be able to get out of it.
Now, after about two years, Y/N had been rising up in the ranks of life. She had basically her dream job, amazing income, and free health insurance. She even had a small cottage on the island, not really leaving often anyway. She was in constant need at the lab, making sure the dino eggs were staying warm and healthy while also taking care of the baby dinosaurs as they grew. It had to be the best thing she had ever done. For hours she got to sit with the baby dinosaurs, taking care of them and making sure they were healthy. Even though John always made sure that the baby dinos imprinted on him first, Y/N felt that she too had a strong connection with them as well. Readjusting her glasses, she finished her online work for the day, making sure to close everything up before leaving the lab for lunch.
+ + +
“Come on in.” John Hammond spoke softly, taking off his hat and handing it to one of the technicians.
“Good morning, Henry.” John greeted the scientist, who was taking notes.
“Oh, good day, sir,” Henry spoke, noticing the man.
Grant looked around the room, his eyes catching the eggs, watching as one of the eggs made a strong move, the robotic arm steadying it.
“My God, look!” He exclaimed as John, Henry, Ellie, and Ian joined him.
“Ah, perfect timing. I was hoping they would hatch before I had to go on the boat.” Henry mentioned, writing a few things on his clipboard of notes.
Looking up and around quickly, John looked back to the hatching egg.
“Where’s Dr. L/N? She needs to be here for this.” John asked as Henry looked up from his clipboard and looked around the room as well.
“I think she went to lunch, sir,” Henry answered, going back to his clipboard.
“Have someone notify her of the hatching, please,” John asked, grabbing a pair of plastic gloves and slipping them on.
“Right away, sir,” Henry spoke before grabbing his walkie-talkie.
The egg begins to crack, the robotic arm moves away, a baby dinosaur tries to break its way out, just its head sticking out of the shell. John reaches down carefully, breaking the shell away, helping the baby dinosaur out.
“Come on then, out you come.” John cooed to the small dinosaur.
“They imprint on the first living creature they come in contact with. That helps them to trust me. I’ve been present for the birth of every animal on the island. Just look at that.” John spoke, as he carefully petted the baby dino’s head.
“Surely not the ones that have bred in the wild?”
“Actually, they can’t breed in the wild. We have a huge thing for population control. There is no unauthorized breeding.” A voice quickly answered, gaining John and his company’s attention.
“Took the words right out of my mouth, Y/N.” Henry chuckled, before heading to his desk to file the baby dino’s birth report.
John stood up, quickly tossing his gloves in the trash, before turning to the scientist.
“Y/N, how wonderful of you to join us. The first egg just hatched.” John spoke and Y/N’s eyes widened, quickly heading over and checking on the baby.
“Darn, my calculations must have been off. I thought I still had a couple of days.” She spoke, pushing up the edge of her glasses, before grabbing a pair of her own gloves.
Helping out with the shell, she gently took the baby dino in her hands, observing and making sure the baby was doing alright, and all seemed fine.
“How do you know that they can’t breed?” Ian asked, more intrigued by the scientist than the answer to his question.
“They are all females, we’ve engineered them that way.” Gently turning the dinosaur in her hands, Y/N tilted her head to the side.
“Body temperature feels like somewhere around eighty-eight or eighty-nine degrees,” Y/N mumbled.
“Henry?” John asked, gaining the other scientist’s attention.
“Ninety-one.” He answered.
Y/N nodded and gave a small smile.
“Close enough. Doesn’t seem to be any issues in breathing or anything. She’s as healthy as can be.” She spoke as Ian looked at John skeptically.
“But again, how do you know they’re all female? Does someone go into the park and, uh… Lift up the dinosaurs’ skirts?”
“We control their chromosomes. It’s not that difficult. All vertebrate embryos are inherently female anyway. It takes an extra hormone at the right developmental stage to create a male, and we simply deny them that.” Henry explained as Ian stood there, shocked.
“Your silence intrigues me,” John spoke.
“John, the kind of control you’re attempting is not possible. If there’s one thing the history of evolution has taught us, it’s that life will not be contained. Life breaks free. It expands to new territories. It crashes through barriers. Painfully, maybe even… Dangerously, but… Well, there it is.”
“There it is.” John agreed as Henry looked at Ian.
“You’re implying that a group composed entirely of females will… breed?” He spoke, looking at the man with furrowed eyebrows.
“No, I’m simply saying that life… uh, finds a way.” Ian tried to explain.
“That is true… Mr… Uh…” Y/N gestured with a hand for the seeming rockstar's name.
“Ian, Ian Malcolm.” He introduced himself, giving the woman a smile, in which she blushed.
Y/N nodded and continued, "It’s true, Mr. Malcolm, but, here, we sort of change how life sort of works. I guess it’s hard to explain.” She laughed awkwardly, before looking towards Alan, who was looking intensely at the baby dino.
“Do you want to hold her?” Y/N asked the man, who abruptly looked up and gave a nod.
“Yes, thank you.”
“Just put on some gloves over there.” She spoke, as Alan quickly pulled on some gloves.
Y/N gently handed the baby dino over to the man, who had taken a deep breath in return. He had a certain suspicion of what it was.
“What species is this?” He asked, gently holding the baby in both hands.
“It’s a velociraptor,” Y/N spoke, taking her gloves off and throwing them in the nearby trash can.
“You bred raptors?” He asked, and the scientist nodded slowly, looking at the man in slight confusion.
Alan looked down at the baby raptor the small dinosaur in his hand that would one day grow up to be an incredible killer. Y/N checked over any of the other unhatched dino eggs, making sure none of them were hatching. Sighing, she pushed up her glasses again before looking back at John and his group.
“It was nice to meet you all, but I have to get to the baby sector. I’ll hopefully see you all later.” She spoke before heading to the door, before leaving she turned to Henry.
“Dr. Wu, could you please notify me when the next babies hatch?” She asked the other doctor, who nodded and gave the woman a smile.
“Thank you.”
Turning to Ian, Y/N smiled at the man. "And, I'll hopefully be seeing you, Ian?" She asked and Ian smirked, looking the scientist up and down.
"Uh, yes... Hopefully so." He spoke and Y/N nodded before clearing her throat and rushing off and out of the lab.
Ian watched after her, his smile never leaving his face. Ellie nudged the man and smiled up at him.
"I think she likes you." She spoke and Ian nodded, continuing to stare at the door you left through.
"Yeah, I think she does."
Ellie chuckled, crossing her arms. "And I think you like her."
Ian nodded once more, pushing up his glasses, his cheeks feeling warm. "Yeah, I think I do."

Okay so, I know I am the world’s biggest f*cking jester as I continue to make these false promises of writing but I PROMISE I have things planned- BIG THINGS PLANNED coming for the next few weeks, just give me some time 😭
That being said…
My love for Jurassic Park has come back at full force as I’ve been rewatching the old movies (and the new one, and let me say how much I LOVED it-). So, with this-
Anyone down for a few Alan Grant fics/ headcanons?

F, K, M, S, X and Y for the ask game
F: Share a snippet from one of your favourite dialogue scenes you've written and explain why you're proud of it.
A thought hits him, then, and he blinks hard. “I can’t believe Kelly’s gonna get that big…”
Grant sits down on the couch beside his old dig partner as she says,“Your daughter?”
"Uh-huh. I have another, and, uh- and a son. Twins.” Ian tells them, wondering if he had mentioned Kelly at the hospital or if Grant had told her of their conversation in the tour car.
He wouldn’t put it past the man.
He circles around the back of the couch to stand between the television and the front door, leaning against the wall. His leg appreciates the gesture, despite how unnerving it is to face the pair directly. “Don't see them often enough."
“Why not?” Grant asks, his frown more perplexed than anything. And Ian almost laughs out loud, because, isn’t it obvious?
"Tell me, Dr. Grant, does this,"he waves a hand over his haggard self,“scream…reliable to you?”
"What the hell, Ian, we've known each other for four years.”
Yeah, this one's from my Jurassic Park one-shot WIP.
Anyway, the reason I like it so much? It really fleshes out the personalities of Alan and Ian, and their dynamic. It shows Ian's regret of not being there for his kids as well as how formal he still is at the same time that he's a literal human disaster (Isla Sorna and San Diego'll do that to someone). And Alan's last line, where he's literally annoyed by that formality? I can hear it, and it's way too funny.
K: What's the angstiest idea you've ever come up with?
What's the angstiest idea I haven't come up with?
Really, though, literally all of my writing has angst. This one's genuinely a tough question.
Gonna have to say the second to last chapter of the Temple bombing fic, though. Can't say too much other than the fact that it involves someone traumatizing someone else by accident. That fic and the ones following, are rough. And not just for Rak.
M: Got any premises on the back burner that you'd care to share?
winces in doesn't fully understand the question
According to Google, a premise is like a side of a controversial topic or something? Anyway, hopefully I'm answering this right.
So, hot topic: The Grand Inquisitor didn't necessarily like his job.
Reasoning?
Well......You gotta do what you gotta do to survive.
If he didn't obey Vader and Sidious, it'd be his death, and he was clearly terrified of Vader (and resentful of him, but that's not relevant right now), so he had little choice but to obey. It's a tragedy, what happened to him.
There's no proof that he didn't enjoy it, obviously, but...I like to think he didn't.
S: Any fandom tropes you can't resist?
Honestly, I'll read almost anything if it's about a character I want to more content of. As for writing, anything angsty. Whatever brings the most pain to literally everyone (characters, readers, myself).
There's something wrong with me.
On the contrary, I do love enemies to friends (with a sprinkle of angst of the "enemy" regretting horrible actions). Friends to enemies is another. Absolute pain. ❤
X: A character you enjoy making suffer.
Literally everyone. Happiness is not an option.
The Grand Inquisitor
Jack Sparrow
Cobb Vanth
My own OCS
This list is literally endless, I kid you not.
Y: A character you want to protect.
Ironically? Yeah, the very characters I enjoy torturing. It's a very weird paradox, but I live for it.

It doesn’t take long to exit the car and duck under the small awning on the backside of the house. The door opens and warm light floods the space to reveal a functional, tidy kitchen. At quick glance, you can’t tell if its neat state is because he seldom uses it or he’s just clean with his habits - but having seen his office, you suspect the former. He toes out of his shoes and drops his briefcase beside them before padding down the small hallway, turning on more lights as he goes. You follow suit with your wet shoes and set your purse down before following him.
The house glows with golden light that bounces off warm wood paneling and shelves, leather couches and plaid armchairs. Piles of books rest here and there, intermixed with other curios of exploration - a globe on a spindle, binoculars and a leather case, magnifying glasses and various fossil specimens. It’s obviously a bachelor’s home, but it’s far from slovenly - more just… comfortably lived in. The thought brings a warm smile to your face as you silently follow him past the main living room and into a large, adjacent room.
A tall and wide bookshelf dominates this room, lined with more books, spotted with artwork, and… are those vinyl records? You can’t help but step closer, squinting to better examine the narrow spines, and your smile widens. You’re not sure if you would have considered him to be a music fan, but there’s quite a surprising collection here. Glass clinks across the room, and you glance over your shoulder to see him standing at a bar cabinet opposite the worn, plaid couch and leather armchair.
Brown liquid sloshes against a glass as he pours and meets your gaze. “What’s your poison?”
“How about… whiskey?” It’s not your favorite, but it’s popular at the dig sites and you’ve acquired a taste for it.
A smirk of approval flashes across his face before he tips the already open bottle over a second highball, and more liquid pours out. With both glasses in hand, he skirts around the couch to hand you one.
With another heavy sigh, he holds his glass out. “Well, I guess… here’s to your next adventure.”
“Thanks.” You sound sadder than you would like as your glass meets his with a gentle clink. The whiskey is surprisingly smooth as it slides down your throat, warming you from within. He motions towards the armchair before he drops to sit on the couch, taking another long pull of his drink.
The chair’s springs feel a little worn, and you think it matches the style of the leather sofa in the living room - and the sudden thought that he bought two living room furniture sets and mixed them together makes you smirk against the rim of your glass. Swallowing another mouthful of whiskey, you glance back at the bookshelf. “I wouldn’t have guessed that you were a big music fan.”
His gaze follows yours to the bookshelf, huffing an amused sigh. “I don’t think I am, really. I inherited most of that collection from the couple that used to live here.” He taps a finger against his glass. “They were an elderly couple, downsizing… and they asked if I had any interest in it. Truthfully, I’ve barely listened to any of it, but it was less furniture to have to buy.”
You nod in consideration. “I suppose that does make sense.” Your gaze continues to sweep the room, and it looks like his office away from campus - or more like a study, perhaps. A desk rests behind the couch, flanking the bar cabinet, and the plaid couch looks comfortably broken-in as if it’s hosted him for many long nights of intellectual pursuits. Another silence falls, and maybe it should be awkward, but somehow… it’s not. Somehow, it’s enough just to sit with him now.
“Thank you.” He says at length, drawing your attention to his small, appreciative smile. “For what you did back there and not… not making a big deal about it. Or… asking any questions.”
“Of course.” You easily reply. “You… you didn’t make a big deal about it, either. Or ask any questions that day… of the storm.”
If possible, he looks even more world-weary as he takes another sip of whiskey. “I just didn’t want to see you get hurt. With the amount of damage done to the main tent canvas during that storm, you would have been hurt had you stayed, and that would have been on me.”
“No, it wouldn’t,” you counter genty. “I signed all the legal waivers to be there. If I hurt myself because of a fucking panic attack, then that would have been no one’s fault but mine for not… well, for not admitting that I was a safety hazard to the excavation.”
“You’re not a safety hazard.” He shakes his head dismissively. “Not anymore than I am because I…” His words trail off with a sigh before bowing his head and pinching the bridge of his nose. “Honestly, I don’t know what I am…”
You wet your top lip before taking another sip of the heady liquor. “Well, who says that you have to be anything more than just yourself?”
He goes still against the couch for a long moment before raising his head. His gaze finds yours as his brow furrows in deep contemplation. You can’t tell what he’s thinking behind those mesmerizing, slate-blue eyes of his, but you don't dare shy away from his gaze. In fact, you want to commit everything about it to memory as your heart starts racing.
His eyes narrow with a familiar sharp, shrewd edge. “You know… out of all your peers, you’re the only one who hasn’t once asked me about it.” He tilts his head in further interest. “I know it’s not for your lack of curiosity - you’re far too bright for that - so, that must mean it was a deliberate choice on your part….” The corner of his mouth lifts with a knowing edge. “You’ve chosen not to ask me about the articles, the rumors, or about the island, about… any of it.”
Your mouth goes dry and you resist the sudden urge to fidget against the chair. “Because it’s none of my business. It never has been.” Your fingers tighten against the highball. “Ever since the dig was canceled - ever since you told us not to give any statements to the media - you’ve known more than what you’ve been saying, but if you’re not saying it, then there must be a good reason why. And asking you just seemed… disrespectful.”
His shoulders sag under some invisible weight and he exhales another deep sigh before lifting his glass and draining it. His tongue darts out to catch a stray drop on his bottom lip as his eyes turn distant. “It’s worse at night,” he whispers solemnly. “The moving shadows, the flashing lights… yes, the T-Rex shook the ground when she walked, but she was adept at hiding it during the hunt. But the raptors…” his words trail off with a trembling sigh. “Both stunning - fascinating in their intelligence - and utterly… terrifying.”
You forget how to breathe, shocked by the gravity of his words.
He purses his lips, fingers clenching around the empty glass as if regretting its empty state. “There was one moment… the two raptors had us flanked, had the advantage… and there was nothing….” He shakes his head with a trembling breath and horrific memory. “Absolute death stared me in the face and all I could do was stare helplessly back…”
You wait on baited breath, speechless and dumbfounded.
He gives another helpless shake of his head. “And, then when it didn’t come… and you find yourself back in the normal world - buying groceries, doing laundry, making small talk with the neighbors - but you’re still shell shocked by it, by all of it, by suddenly… coming face-to-face with creatures that have been extinct for 65 million years, that I’ve devoted my life to study-” His voice chokes up, suddenly pushing to his feet and avoiding your gaze as he returns to the bar cabinet.
His sudden motion stirs you to action, and you swallow the rest of your whiskey before rising and joining him at the cabinet. He pours another measure for himself, and you hold your glass out for a second round. Your eyes linger on his profile all the while, wanting so desperately to reach out and touch him - to soothe his troubled brow, to wrap him in the tightest hug.
Your heart beats so loud that you wonder if he can hear it. “And you’ve carried all of that with you since… since you returned? There’s been no one that you could tell?”
“Ellie, of course.” He says before taking another hearty gulp. “But she was there, too - and we both… at first, we thought we could ignore it. But life never returned to normal, and neither did we.”
Your heart breaks anew as the silence stretches. Too many thoughts run through your head and you take a big drink of whiskey to help clear your head. But the growing fog at the corners of your mind tells a different story. Emboldened with another drink, your gaze returns to linger on the handsome definition of his profile - the strong line of his jaw, the slope of his nose, the sweep of hair across his brow. What would it be to kiss his cheek? To trail your lips down to his, hearing his breath catch in the moment before his mouth meets yours?
With a trembling breath, you shake your head to steady your thoughts. “T-thank you for telling me.” You say softly, your voice thready in the silence. “I have been concerned for you these last months, you know. Watching you just lose yourself in your work, like… if you stopped, something horrible would catch you. And now… now, it makes perfect sense.” Heat rises in your cheeks and you take another fortifying drink of whiskey. “You bore all the questions and media scrutiny with dignity, though - you’ve never once lost your temper or told anyone to fuck off. Sounds like you’d be well within your right if you did, though. Hell, I think I would have done it at least once by now.”
Another wave of exhaustion overtakes him as he looks lost for words. Clearly everything he’s been through has taken quite the toll and continues to haunt him - and goodness, how can you leave him now? Err, not that you should stay the night - certainly not uninvited - but how can you go to New Mexico and leave him alone? If you’re the only person who knows what he’s been through, then that does mean he really has no one else…?
“I’m sorry,” he whispers quietly, shaking his head with an air of shame. “That’s… a lot more than you bargained for tonight, I’m sure.”
“No - please don’t apologize.” You reassure as your gaze roams freely over his face. “I think you needed the outlet, quite frankly. I’m just sorry that it manifested in a panic attack…”
He glances over at you with a tired, lopsided smirk. “At least, I’m in good company - the best I could ask for, really.”
Your heart warms at the sentiment and you’re helpless to hold back an answering smile as you all but melt under his gaze. “Same goes for you, you know.”
Again, he holds out his glass to meet yours with another gentle clink before you each take another long drink. Endless questions swirl in the back of your brain because, seriously… what the fuck? Actual, living dinosaurs?! The how's and why's of such an impossible concept gnaw at your academic curiosity, urging you to keep asking him for details. But he looks so strung out and so tired, how could you possibly push him any further? In fact, maybe it's best if you just leave. Especially before you have the chance to do anything stupid  Swallowing the last mouthful of heady liquor, you take a deep breath. “Well, I should… I don’t want to be a bad houseguest and overstay my welcome.”
“You haven’t overstayed anything,” he reassures gently. “It’s been nice to share a drink with you.”
An appreciative smile curves your lips. “You, too.” You turn from the bar cabinet and thread back around the couch. The movement upends the lightheaded fog in your brain and your balance falters, tipping you towards the couch. You catch yourself with a steadying hand, and okay… maybe your meager dinner wasn’t enough for drinking whiskey.
“Are you alright?” The gentle concern on his voice raises embarrassed heat in your cheeks as you try to offer a dismissive smile.
“Yeah. I’m fine, thanks.” You try to ignore the dubious look on his face but your vibrato falters nonetheless. “Maybe just… my dinner wasn’t hearty enough for two glasses of whiskey.”
An understanding look dawns on his face as he nods. “Well, if the dean would never forgive you for a car hitting me, then the dean would surely murder me if a former student gets a DUI on alcohol that can be traced back to my place.” His mouth curves with a suddenly shy, almost awkward smirk. “So, you can just… take my bed, and I’ll stay here on the couch.”
Your mouth nearly falls agape as your cheeks flame. “Oh no, that’s… not necessary. You don’t need to be all chivalrous like that. I can just - the couch will be fine.”
His eyes narrow with mild reproach as his grin sharpens. “Didn’t you just say that you don’t want to be a bad houseguest?” He taps a finger against his empty glass, waiting until you nod before continuing. “Then, stop refusing my hospitality.”
Words choke in your throat as he starts to walk around the couch. Should you thank him again? Should you try to offer more protests? Your head spins as you suddenly feel deep in over your head and your heart threatens to beat out of your chest.
“Just, uh…” He turns back around towards you, offering a small smile. “Make yourself at home, and I’ll be back in a few minutes.”
You nod quickly. “Okay, thank you…” Your brain goes into overdrive, and, holy shit… you’re going to spend the night at Dr. Grant’s house.
In his bed.
By yourself.
Nothing about any of that should be real, and truly, such thoughts are best left to your secret midnight fantasies… yet, here you are. You long for another steadying drink of whiskey - or, perhaps water, better yet - and you exhale nervously. There’s no reason for you to freak out about this - and despite your initial protests, he’s being the perfect gentleman about the whole thing - and really, why should you complain about that? Especially if it’s going to let you sleep in his bed.
Looking for a distraction from your raging thoughts, you step back up to the wide bookcase and examine the spines of the vinyl record albums. Vaughn Monroe, Patsy Cline, Waylon Jennings, Dolly Parton - so many artists that you have passing knowledge about but can’t put your finger on any one specific song. It appears that the couple who used to live here had a heavy love of twangy country music. Was this their music room? Did they spend hours two-stepping or just listening and singing together?
Somehow, you can’t picture Dr. Grant… Alan doing that. In fact, you can almost picture a grumpy scowl if the idea of dancing around a living room was even suggested. The image shouldn’t tug at your heartstrings, but it does all the same.
The padding of bare feet on the hallway’s wood floor catches your attention, and you look up just in time to see him return. Gone are his clothes from the day, replaced with a soft looking white t-shirt, striped blue pajama pants and a bathrobe with a turquoise and brown Southwest-inspired pattern. It’s not the most coordinated look, but he seems perfectly at ease as he drops a pillow and blanket down to the couch.
“The bed sheets are relatively clean - washed within the last two weeks,” he says softly. “And if you want to change, I laid out a clean shirt and shorts for you. Also, you’ll find a toothbrush still in the package and a new toothpaste on the bathroom counter.”
Your heart warms with fond surprise. “Wow, uh - thanks. That’s all surprisingly thoughtful of you.”
He tips his head, meeting your gaze from under his lowered brow with an almost teasing, admonishing edge. “Just because I’m not married doesn’t mean that I’ve always lived alone.”
Your mouth curves to a soft smile. “I didn’t mean it like that… truly, I do appreciate it. I guess it’s just not what I expected…” Affection colors your voice as you hold his gaze for a long moment before blinking back to yourself. “Good night.”
He nods in agreement. “Good night. If you need anything, please just ask.”
You return his nod before stepping out into the hallway. Walking back to the kitchen, you retrieve your purse before disappearing into the bathroom. It doesn’t take you long to brush your teeth and get ready for bed - at least, to the best of your limited ability. His house is old enough to only have one bathroom in the main hallway, and you turn the light off, noticing that a faint yellow glow still shines out from his study. For a split-second, you debate going back to wish him good night again… but for what purpose? You don’t have anything else to say that hasn’t already been said.
Closing the bedroom door behind you, you glance around at the tidy, cozy interior of his room. If he ran around in a mad dash to clean up the room or make the bed for you, it doesn’t show. In fact, the chair next to his closet still hosts an assortment of random clothing, and your heart warms at the knowledge that he didn’t make an attempt to be anything other than himself around you. A smile tugs at your face as you approach the bed, setting your purse down next to the nightstand.
Your smile widens as you take in the quilted bedcover in shades of navy and maroon set against white sheets, along the clothes he laid out for you. Admittedly, sleeping in jeans and your shirt from the day doesn't sound comfortable, and you quickly shed your clothes. The cotton shorts’ elastic waistband rides low on your hips and his shirt hangs oversized on your bra-less shoulders, but they carry a clean, fuss-free scent that makes you even more eager to nestle under the bedcovers.
Pulling back the quilt, you slide against the soft sheets before reaching to turn off the nightstand light. Settling against the pillow, your heart pounds in the darkness and you still can’t believe where you are… and who’s just sleeping down the hall. Though, that just makes his bed feel all the more empty. Especially as you drown in his scent, rolling onto your side and snuggling against the pillow. Your eyes drift closed as your fingers reach out against the mattress.
What would it be to have him lying here beside you? To feel his body heat radiating under the covers and the promise of his skin within reach? Would his breathing grow steady as he falls asleep, or would it be heightened with anticipation, on the last verge of restraint like yours? And when your fingers find his arm in the stillness, would he roll towards you? Would his mouth find yours in a rush of unbridled desire as you finally learn the taste of his kiss? Your fingers would drift towards his waist, enticing him to settle atop you and let the weight of his body push you into the mattress while devouring each other.
Your body comes alive with the runaway fantasy, gasping softly as your hips twitch with aching need against the mattress. Fuck, you want him in here with you - want to say whatever it takes for him to just fuck you with abandon. Not that you consider yourself well-versed in ways to drive men wild, but any of the scenarios that you can conjure sound so cheap and contrived - and you’re not just going to walk through his house naked. You want him to want you, too, and that’s a far harder thing to get.
With a frustrated sigh, you roll over to your other side, gripping the sheet close. Before closing your eyes, you notice that no light shines under the door from the hallway. Perhaps it’s easier for him to just close his eyes on his couch and blissfully sleep, completely ignorant of the way you yearn for him.
That thought doesn’t help you get to sleep any faster, tossing and turning to try and dispel the heat on your skin. When next you open your eyes, the room appears darker in the late unknown hour, and you roll over, drowsily snuggling back into the pillow. His scent wraps around you like a comforting blanket, and it’s easy to imagine that he’s spooned up behind you with the sleep-warmed weight of his arm draped across your midsection. But a faint glow of light from the crack under the door catches your attention.
What is he possibly doing awake at - a quick glance to his bedside clock shows - 1:48 AM?
Pulling back the covers, your feet connect with the carpet as you walk over to open the door. The light spills out from his study and with a quiet yawn, you do your best to ignore the hallway’s chilly wood floor as you approach. Leaning a shoulder against the door frame, you pivot around the corner and your brow furrows in confusion. The plaid couch is empty, but the pillow and blanket reveal that someone has at least tried to sleep there. You tilt your head to rest against the door frame and cross your arms as you suddenly hear the sound of running water in the dark kitchen.
A smirk teases your lips as you glance over, watching him move in the shadows and emerge back into the soft glow from the study’s floor lamp. If possible, he looks more exhausted than you’ve ever seen him, not helped as his brow furrows with questioning concern. “Hope I didn’t wake you.” His voice carries the rasp of recent disuse and nothing about it should ripple goosebumps along your skin.
“You didn’t.” You say softly, as if anything louder would be inappropriate at such a late hour. “I was already awake and I saw the light…” Your words trail off as you take in his appearance, noting the disappearance of his rather unflattering robe before lingering on the careworn lines of his face. “Trouble sleeping?”
“Yeah…” His mouth curves with a tired smile. “You could say that.” He raises his right hand to scrub across his face, and your gaze zeroes in on the dark mark high on his forearm, just beneath his elbow.
A strikingly elegant, black-ink tattoo in the shape of a double spiral rests on his skin, and everything about it sends your mind racing. You haven’t given it much thought since glimpsing it that one afternoon in his office, but it just seems so out of character for him. Yet here’s undeniable proof staring you in the face.
And speaking of staring… your cheeks flush as you finally look away, only to see the knowing expression on his face as he catches your obvious interest.
Your mouth goes dry as you search for something not too horribly awkward to say. “It’s beautiful,” you finally settle on. “A symbol of a rebellious youth?”
“Not quite.” Distant fondness tinges his voice as he glances down at the swirling lines of ink. “It’s Kirituhi - an art form based on Māori-style tattoos. A reminder of my second home.”
The excerpt of his bio from the newspaper flashes in your mind. “New Zealand, right?”
He nods slowly. “We had several people of Māori descent on Joan’s digs over the years - and their culture is just fascinating. Their connection to the past, to the present - to honoring what came before as a way to look to the future… well, that stuck with me considering that I spend my career digging in the past to build my own future.” He pauses to draw a breath as you listen with rapt attention. “And the spiral symbolizes the continuity of life - and, just as the dinosaurs had their time on this earth, so will the human race.” His mouth quirks with a sardonic grin. “I guess all we can hope is that our skeletons fossilize just as well as the dinosaurs’ to preserve our own legacy.”
Your heart melts as it goes out to him. It’s far more insightful than you would have expected, and that makes it all the more beautiful. Unable to stop yourself, you push off the wall and close the short distance between you. Your fingers reach out to his forearm, turning it for a better look in the low light. The piece reveals far more delicate, intricate lines up close, and you sweep an appreciative thumb over the inked art. “That makes it just…" Your voice drops to a whisper thin tone as the air thickens. "All the more beautiful."
You raise your gaze to his, wanting to drown in the azure pools of his eyes, and electricity crackles between you. The heat from his forearm curls through you to settle low in your belly. He’s so close now, and your long simmering arousal rises to a boil. Can he see it on your face? Can he see how much you want to kiss him? To have him wrap you in his arms and hold you close? To make the outside world disappear under the weight of him above you and the touch of him deep inside you?
Maybe it’s the late hour, maybe it’s the vulnerability of the moment, maybe it’s the fire singing in your blood - but you let your hand trail up from his tattoo, up over his exposed bicep and the sleeve of his t-shirt. A shuddering breath runs through him as he breaks your gaze, squeezing his eyes closed.
Your breathing quickens as you rise to your tiptoes and lean in, letting your breath skim the shell of his ear. “Tell me to stop and I will.” You whisper, emboldened by the maddening scent of his skin as another shuddering breath leaves him. “Tell me that you want to go back to your couch, and I’ll go back to your bed.” Your voice trembles as you sigh. “And I’ll keep pretending that I haven’t been wet for you all night.”
“Fucking hell…” His voice strains with the last thread of control as your fingers dance along the line of his shoulder. “You… we shouldn’t…”
Your fingers find the fine hairs along the nape of his neck as the tip of your nose brushes the shell of his ear. “Stop looking for a way to make this wrong if this is what you want, too.” Your other hand searches out his left hand that’s clenched at his side. “It’s okay, Alan,” you breathe as you draw his hand towards you. “Touch me… please.”
The sudden force of his kiss makes you dizzy as his arms envelop you with the strength that you've fantasized about. Your heart soars as it races, meeting his embrace head on, devouring him as you want to be devoured. You cling to the broad plane of his shoulders as he crushes you close, the heat of him burning through your - his - borrowed clothes. The heady thought sends more liquid heat pooling in your core and, God… why are you still in the hallway?
You urge him forward, keeping the inferno of his body so close as you back towards the bedroom. His broad hands clench against the small of your back, groaning as he crowds you against the wall and the full press of your hips connect. The solid ridge of his erection makes your mouth water as you grind your hips forward. There's nothing about this man that you don't want, and you have no reason to hide.
"You have no idea…" he groans with an intoxicating, wild edge. "What hearing you does to me…"
Sparks shoot down your spine as your body burns. "Please, Alan," you whimper. "I need you."
The growl that rumbles in his chest bypasses all rational thought, and you nearly lose your feet as he pulls you away from the wall. Wrapped in his arms, tangled with his legs, trading kisses and nibbles and moans, your head spins until the solid weight of his bed appears behind you.
You paw at the hem of his shirt until he lifts his arms and the fabric slides free. Your eyes widen with hungry appreciation, wanting to map each facet of his chest with your tongue but you burn too hot for that patience right now. He snakes a calloused hand under your oversized shirt, cupping your breast with a maddening squeeze and delicious pressure. Pleasure shoots straight to your dripping core, a needy moan echoing in your throat as you arch against him.
"Please…" you breathe against his lips, gripping his waist to grind against his cock. "Fuck me… Alan."
He groans and his arms clamp around your midsection, all but dragging you fully onto his bed. The force of his strength takes your breath away as you push at the waistband of his pajama pants and underwear. There's no grace in the kisses that dissolve to gasping breaths or the scramble of hands to reveal bare skin. And when the tip of his cock slides through your wetness, your tandem guttural groans echo in the stillness of the bedroom.
"Wait, wait…" You manage to gasp, barely recognizing your own voice. "I'm not… we need -” your cheeks burn despite the intimate press of your bodies. "My bag has something, if you don't…"
He exhales a shuddering moan as if still struggling for control. Or perhaps he's embarrassed - a rational man of his intelligence so undone by his body. But then he skims his lips along your ear and his breath sears your skin. "And here I thought you were my innocent girl." The luscious, teasing rasp to his voice rushes more liquid heat through you. "Are you always so prepared, hmm?"
You struggle to breathe through the blinding surge of arousal. "A girl never knows when she'll meet the right guy…" Your nails dig into his back for emphasis, rewarded with his delicious gasp as you cradle his hips closer to yours. "And you've been the right guy for longer than I should admit."
"Fuck, don't say that…" His head drops to the junction of your neck and shoulder as his hips surge forwards. The thick slide of him through your soaked folds nearly undoes you, but you paw at his shoulder with urgent need.
"My bag… unless you have -" Your voice cuts off in a gasp as he shifts suddenly, reaching over you for the bedside table. The scrape of the wooden drawer and tear of foil heightens your anticipation before his strong, nimble fingers find purchase against your thigh. Following his coaxing movements, you spread your legs wide and wrap around his backside as he positions above you. His eyes blaze with wildfire as you lean up to kiss him, gasping as he eases forward in a slow, steady glide.
Your eyes roll back at the thick, full stretch of him as your body adjusts to the delicious invasion. The kiss turns to a heavy, moaning breath as the connection threatens your sanity. You can't remember the last time - if ever - you've been so full of man, and your toes curl as you sink blissfully back against the mattress.
"Having you in my clothes, in my bed… like this," his voice pitches deep as he drinks you in with dark, blown-wide eyes. "So goddamn gorgeous."
Words escape you as his hips roll back and surge forward, striking the deepest part of you. Electricity jolts through you as he thrusts again, and you surrender the last facet of your rational mind. Your body moves with his on primal instinct, driven to chase the euphoria promised each time he strikes your deep-rooted pleasure point.
You cling to him as he moves over you, against you, inside you - and you’re so fucking close. The coil at the base of your spine winds tighter with each stroke that builds a rhythm to ruin you for life. His pleasured groans and grunts of exertion mingle with your staccato cries as your body goes taut, arching against him. Your orgasim hits hard, stars exploding behind your closed eyelids as waves of euphoria rock through you. His hips stutter to a stop as he buries himself in you with a strangled groan of relief.
The moment stretches to an eternity as you hold him close, wanting to burn the memory of him like this into your brain. Your lips trail along the defined line of his jaw as he nuzzles your cheek, and your breathing starts to settle out. His mouth finds yours for a long, lazy kiss as the afterglow deliciously numbs your senses. You hum contentedly against his lips. “That was so… beyond fucking good.” Every muscle relaxes against the mattress as your eyelids drop heavily with exhaustion. “I hope you’re able to sleep a little better now.”
He half-sighs, half-laughs as the tip of his nose brushes yours. “Yeah… you, too.”
You meet for another, slow kiss before you reluctantly let him go. It’s not nearly as awkward as you tell yourself it should be as he retreats to the bathroom, returns with a warm washcloth for you, and he steps into your - his - shorts before rejoining you in bed. You debate reaching for your discarded underwear but the hem of his shirt falls long enough, and a lingering thrill whispers through you as your bare lower half reconnects with his skin.
In the room’s silence, he lays on his back as you snuggle up to his side. His arm comes around your shoulders, and you listen to the sound of his breathing, just existing with him as the waking world starts to yield to dreamland.
You don’t know what tomorrow will bring, but you refuse to let him go until you have to.

The Illusion of Control [Alan Grant X GN!Reader]
Tumblr media
Summary: Several years after escaping the nightmares of Isla Sorna, Alan Grant finds himself face to face with the one person he swore would be better off without him. Turns out there’s a lot more catching up that needs to be done than he thought.
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 3.4K
A/N: Here it is, the Alan Grant reader insert that no one but my subconscious asked for. This takes place somewhere between the events of Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World: Dominion so while the timeline in the story is vague, just know that this is definitely post-Isla Sorna. Also, no beta. We die like men.
“Dr. Grant?”
Alan pried himself away from the paperwork in front of him and turned around. His mouth had just begun to open and form around the question, “how can I help you”, when his jaw went slack and his heart stilled in his chest. His eyes widened.
“I’ll be damned…”
The last thing Alan Grant ever expected when he rolled out of bed to return to the dig that morning was to have you standing in the entryway of his work tent. And yet, there you were, body framed beautifully by the desert and a gentle smile painted across your face. It was so surreal, so unbelievable that, for the briefest moment, he considered the possibility that the blistering heat had finally gotten to him.
But the soft chuckle that came from your throat reassured him that this was no hallucination. The one person he had desperately tried to leave in the past without considering the damage it would inflict on his own heart had actually returned. The one that he let get away out of sheer doubt and fear had found their way back like salmon returning to their breeding grounds upstream.
“Surprised to see me?” You asked with a slight tilt of the head.
A huff of laughter escaped his throat. “Is it that obvious?”
“I’m sorry, I probably should have called or at least sent your team an email. Hell, I kind of just barged my way in here.”
“It’s fine, really. I just…”
He trailed off for a moment, soaking in the image and the sensation of seeing you standing before him again. It had been years since he last saw you and yet it looked as if time had barely grazed its fingers over your skin. You were just as gorgeous as the day he’d met you, your smile still as disarming as the first time he watched it grace your lips. If there was ever going to be a textbook image to accompany the phrase, “some things never change”, it would have to be you.
“I never thought I would be so lucky as to see you again,” he admitted.
Alan straightened as you crossed the space between you. Each step you took seemed to trigger a thrum in his chest. The closer you got, the harder his heart beat until suddenly your arms were around his torso and the silly little fist-sized organ behind his sternum ceased to function altogether. His breath caught in his throat.
“I’ve missed you too,” you murmured, breath tickling the skin above his collar.
His hands hovered behind your back for the briefest moment as he debated his right to touch. You were the most delicate and beloved thing in his life, more fragile and worthy of care than even the oldest of fossils. If he ever miscalculated the strength of his words or the placement of his hands and shattered the bone of your trust, he would never be able to forgive himself.
But this momentary embrace was something he couldn’t pass up just because he was afraid. He’d been thinking about you for years, wondering if he had done the wrong thing by swallowing his emotions and burying himself in his work. So much time had passed but still you lingered in his mind like the scent of a candle long since burnt down to the wick.
His hands found their place on your back, one between your shoulder blades and the other on the small of your back. With a soft exhale, he pulled you closer. Some nights he had dreamed of holding you and every single one of those dream had soothed the ache in his chest just enough to make it through another day. But this…this was so much more. This was like coming home.
***
That night, the two of you went out to dinner. Years of catch up were crammed into one evening and, by the end of the meal, it felt as if he had pieced together the entire puzzle that was the mystery of your life without him. And God was he proud of how far you’d come.
The last time he’d seen you, you were a bright eyed grad student determined to know everything there was to learn about theropods. You attended every one of his lectures at the local university, engaged in every discussion group he headed, and constantly made it a point to go out of your way to see him. Since then you had taken everything you learned from him and your studies and applied it to your own teaching. You were now a full-blown tenured professor teaching the ins and outs of theropod behaviors and biology just like your mentor had taught you. He had sworn back when you were exchanging theories in crowded college libraries that there was nothing that could make him adore you more. Hearing about your successes like this, however, he quickly realized he was dead wrong. You had only grown more perfect in your time apart.
“What’s that look for?”
Alan wasn’t even aware that he was staring until you spoke. He sat up tall in his chair, grip tightening around the beer bottle in his hand. He cleared his throat.
“What look?”
“The one where it seems like you have so much you want to say but you can’t find the words,” you replied. “Or maybe you just don’t want to find them.”
You could have stripped him down to his briefs and thrown him in the middle of Times Square on a Friday night and he would have felt less exposed than he did in that moment. Back then you always knew when something was off. You saw through his masks and forced him to admit when he was burnt out or struggling with the countless things on his plate. The fact that you still peered straight through the facade after all this time was both terrifying and impressive.
He lowered his head slightly, forcing a tight-lipped smile. “I’m that easy to read?”
“Only if you know which pages to flip to.”
A silence fell over the table. Part of him wanted to turn tail and run, to bury every last bit of his emotions in the sands he had been digging through for the last two weeks. It would be the safest choice. If he ran, he eliminated every risk of making the wrong move and crossing a line so thin it was barely legible.
But the other part of him that wanted to kick open the gate and roam free in the wilds of emotion roared just as loud. He knew better than to think he could just forget you or ignore the way you made him feel. That approach had already failed miserably. Why make the same mistake and push away the one person that made him feel so seen? Was the idea of being vulnerable really so terrifying?
Before the two beasts in his head could finish their battle, the waiter returned with the check and your focus was drawn away from his warring stare of mind. He sighed at the momentary relief but couldn’t bring himself to celebrate. Time never left any stone untouched.
***
After dinner, he drove you back to your hotel. You had taken time out of a busy convention schedule to take a taxi out to the bluffs and say hello; the least he could do was make sure you made it back to your temporary homestead safe and sound. And hey, if part of the reason he wanted to do so was because he just couldn’t say goodbye so quickly, how were you to know?
“I had a great time tonight,” you said with a smile when the two of you reached your room, “I almost didn’t make my way out to the site today but I’m so glad I did.”
His brow furrowed slightly. “Why almost?”
For the first time that night, he watched you hesitate. He could see that you were calculating, debating not only what you wanted to say but the words you absolutely didn’t dare speak. Maybe he wasn’t the only one with a mind at war.
“I don’t know. I just… I guess I was afraid to get in your way. I know how important these digs are to you and how exhausting it is after spending hours upon hours in the sun just to find a femur the size of tv remote.” You let out a small laugh that made his heart do a sloppy cartwheel in his chest before you continued, “The last thing I wanted was to bother you. Especially after everything you’ve been through. You deserve peace.”
He blinked at the statement. It caught him completely off guard, forcing his brain to run through a thousand different scenarios and questions before he even really understood what he was feeling. Of course he was happy to have returned to a reserved life where dinosaurs were just fragments of old bone rather than frightening monsters dead set on eating him for lunch. But did you truly believe that a life of peace was impossible with you in it? Had he actually made you think that he was better off without you?
“You could never be a bother,” he said quietly, “Hell, you could wake me up in the middle of the night just to tell me you’d hidden my toolbox somewhere in the desert and I’d probably be just fine with it.”
Another laugh slipped from your lips, drawing a soft smile to his face. Oh how he’d missed that laugh. If he could bottle up one sound and keep it on his shelf ‘til the end of time, it would have been just that. Nothing made him feel more special than being the one to draw even the briefest chuckle out of you.
For a moment, the two of you lingered there, soaking in the carefree sensation of sharing a laugh with one another again. Slowly that sensation dissipated and gave way to something else entirely. Alan watched as your smile faded. The cogs in your head were turning again, your eyes shifting away from him as you weighed the pros and cons of whatever decision had been placed at your feet. Finally, a daunting question broke the silence.
“Can I ask you something?”
He nodded. “Certainly.”
The pause that followed only made the tension worsen. He was terrified just being alone with you again. Knowing whatever was clawing at the back of your mind was complicated enough to tangle the webs of your own decision making skills made him consider whether or not he should have even made it back from Isla Sorna.
The grip you had on the strap of your messenger bag tightened as you searched for the words you had lost in the muddle of your thoughts.
“Did I do something wrong? Back in grad school, I mean. You and I were so close and you always seemed so happy to be around me. But before you left, before Isla Sorna, you just…” You let out a pained exhale. “Something changed that made you want to stay away from me and I never understood why. To this day, I still don’t. If I did something to hurt you, I really want to know.”
Alan’s breath caught in his throat. The agony behind your words and the sheer innocence in your eyes stung like a knife. You were hurting because of him and God did that make him want to drop to his knees and beg for your forgiveness.
“No, I promise you did nothing wrong. I…”
He hesitantly reached for you, fingers instinctively seeking the opportunity to touch you and bring you the reassurance you so desperately needed. But before they could even brush your arm, he forced his hand into the pocket of his jeans.
“I did what I thought was best for you and stepped away.”
“‘Stepped away?’ How could cutting me off possibly be what was best for me?” You shook your head. “Alan, you were the person I trusted most. I wanted nothing more than to be there for you. I started to believe in myself because you saw the best in me. Watching you fade out of my life only to disappear entirely and never look back…I got lucky that I could see that the version of myself you showed me was still there.”
“It’s difficult to explain but believe me, I never wanted to hurt you. I wanted to stay.”
The response that came was so quick, so pointed that felt like he’d been shoved into a corner with a hunting rifle aimed at the space between his eyes. “Then tell me why you couldn’t.”
Alan’s heart was racing at this point. Fear and adrenaline were coursing through his veins like a dangerous drug. He had spent his entire life trying to stay in control of his emotions. But after pushing you away and spending years regretting the pain he had inflicted upon, it became increasingly clear that Ellie Sattler was right about control: control was just an illusion.
“I left because I wanted more,” he blurted before his brain could stop him from giving in to the illusion of control.
Something inside of him ruptured. The cracked, worn-down dam holding back his feelings finally gave way and every little sensation he had kept inside came gushing out in a great flood. He wanted to cry and scream and go quiet all at once.
Lowering his head, he continued, his voice barely above a murmur. “I was terrified of being around you because I didn’t want you to see through me. I thought that if you pulled back that curtain the way you always did and saw how I really felt, then you would want nothing to do with me anymore. There’s a reason that men like me don’t get to be with someone like you.”
The last thing he expected was for you to get closer. In fact, he had been anticipating something along the lines of a slap to the face or a disgusted scoff. But neither of those instances found their footing in his reality. Instead, he found himself being warmed by the proximity of your body and felt a soothing hand curl around the side of his neck.
He slowly lifted his head to meet your gaze. Up close once again, he got lost in the beauty of your eyes. Even when they were flooded with emotion, even when he was crippled by fear and doubt, he was drawn to them like moths to a flame. If it had been physically possible to drown himself in them, there was a good chance that’s how he’d choose to go out.
“And what kind of person do you think I am, Dr. Grant?”
Your voice was low, soft yet sultry. It danced across the space between you and slipped into his ear in a way that was so enticing he nearly shivered. Like a siren’s song, your words drew him back in from the violent waves of his emotions and he found himself focusing solely on the way your lips formed around each end every syllable in the sentence.
“The kind of person that, no matter how hard you try, you can’t stop thinking about them,” he murmured, his gaze flicking between your eyes and your lips, “Someone so incredibly beautiful and inspiring that you’d do anything to make them see you…Someone you’d never stop loving until the day you were laid to rest…”
His words faded out completely as he leaned in and brushed his lips against yours. Closing his eyes, he let himself melt into your touch. Words could never properly describe the way your kiss made him feel. It took his breath away and yet, at the same time, it was as if you were breathing life into his aching soul. He had spent so many years yearning for you and now that he had you in his grasp, he didn’t want to let go.
When he felt your mouth begin to move slowly against his, inviting him to go further and dig deeper into the hills of satisfaction, he brought one hand up to cup your cheek. The gentle movements of his mouth descended into something primal when your tongue brushed against his bottom lip. In an instant, his inhibitions broke free from their restraints and threw his body into a frenzy. He kissed you hard and deep, drawing a quiet moan from somewhere within your chest. The sound made his stomach twist with pleasure. What other noises could he procure from these lips? What ungodly sounds would he make himself if he continued to expel several years’ worth of yearning and regret?
“Alan…”
He swallowed his name like a starving animal and used his other hand to grapple at your waist and pull you in tighter. The weight and heat of your body pressed against his made him feel a sense of comfort he never thought possible. Here with you, he was safe. Here with you, he would never be afraid of the ancient demons that lurked in the forests of Isla Nublar and Isla Sorna. Here with you, he was home.
His hips instinctively ground against yours as he let himself drown in the taste of your lips. There was a desperation in his movements that he didn’t even know could exist. Too many years, too little touch. And now here you were giving him something he’d only ever dreamed of.
“Alan.”
The sternness of your voice drew him back to reality in an instant, his self-restraint kicking back into overdrive and forcing him to pull away. If his cheeks weren’t already flush from the heat of it all, there was no doubt that he was burning an embarrassing shade of red.
“I’m sorry,” he murmured breathlessly, “I shouldn’t have—“
You interjected immediately, hand holding his jaw in place so he couldn’t look away. “No. Don’t apologize. I want this. I want you,” you reassured him, “You really think I’d drive all the way out to the dunes just to see you if I didn’t want this?”
His brow raised slightly, eyes studying your face with the same scrutiny he placed into his work. When it came to fossils, he could read every crack and curve of bone like a book and piece together everything that ever happened to an animal that had died millions of years ago. If he could learn to read you the same way, he’d die a very happy man.
“I just don’t really need a hallway full of strangers to hear what we’re doing,” you added with a sheepish grin.
It was at that moment that his spacial awareness returned. While his enamored brain had convinced itself that the two of you were tucked away in your own little world, you were still standing outside the door to your hotel room with a seemingly endless line of identical doors stretching out in either direction.
“Oh.”
You chuckled and brought your other hand up to hold his scruffy jaw, pulling him down to give him a soft kiss. He accepted it without any hesitation.
“Will you stay with me tonight?”
The question reignited a spark in his stomach. His eyes scanned your face some more, almost hurriedly trying to verify that your expression coincided with the words he was hearing. Sure enough, the two pieces matched perfectly and any doubt he had of your intentions was wiped out by a meteor of certainty.
He nodded, ghosting his lips over yours again as he muttered, “Of course.”
Your hands fell from his face as you stepped back. While he had no trouble waiting patiently for you to find your key card and unlock the door, there was no way he could ignore the pounding in his chest. His heart was beating unbearably fast, hopped up on adrenaline and a whole concoction of other emotions he didn’t yet have the strength to unpack. There was still a tiny voice in his head trying to convince him that he didn’t deserve this. It wanted him to remember his fears, to consider the fact that the world was populated by millions of people who were better suited to stand at your side.
But when your fingers laced between his to pull you forward and he heard the hotel door click shut behind him, that tiny voice fell silent. From then on, the only thing he wanted to hear was you.

Word Count: 2k
It was stupid, your little crush on the lead paleontologist at the dig site. You were the site manager, in charge of ensuring everything ran smoothly. Really you were just a Business 101 teacher, but Dr. Alan Grant himself requested that you manage the site. How could you say no? Your break room crush wanted you all the way out in the badlands of Snakewater, Montana with him. Okay, maybe not just him but there's something here, right? You've known each other for years, you sit in on his lessons when you're not teaching. He smiles when he sees you enter the room. You could only hope there's something special.
For now, you sit in the teacher's tent reading some papers that were dropped off with the food for the week. Dr. Sattler, the lead paleobotanist, was making some food for herself. A cup of tea sat on the table in front of you, occasional sips being taken. You heard footsteps move past you outside the tent. It was a light stomping & slow, it was Alan, & boy did he need coffee.
"Morning, Alan," you spoke the moment he grabbed at the tent's curtain door.
Alan was taken aback a little, shaking his head before pinching his nose, "Good morning, Y/N."
It was cute, the way he stumbled to the coffee machine. It was already on considering Ellie used it. He lazily pressed each button, rubbing his face with both hands afterward.
"Rough night, Dr. Grant?" You spoke, a teasing edge on your voice.
Alan froze for a split second before speaking, "How did you know?"
"Is it not obvious?" Your reply caused him to turn around, coffee now in hand.
Alan turned to Ellie with a confused look, to which she responded, "Looks like normal Alan to me."
"Well, I did have a rough night. I tweaked my back near the end of the day yesterday, sleeping was hell."
The dark circles under his eyes were becoming obvious. You couldn't help but pout a little in response. It would be weird to offer a massage. He's just a work friend.
"Well try to rest today," you suggested with a reassuring smile.
He waved off your suggestion, figuratively & literally, "No, no, some of the students found a really good fossil with that computer thing. It would be a shame to miss out on that, & I can't let them mess up such a beautiful fossil."
You stood up from the table & set the papers down, "Well I'm all caught up on work on my end. Mind if I come with you? Tap a few bones with a chisel maybe?"
Alan looked down & chuckled at your statement before shaking his head once more & looking up. A cheery sigh escaped him as he looked into your eyes.
"There is much for you to learn about paleontology, Y/N."
You were standing across from Alan as he was sprawled out on the ground, brush in hand, lightly brushing dirt away. You didn't notice the dopey smile you had on your face till Alan looked up at you, a chuckle escaping his lips.
"What?" You asked, laughing & putting your hands on your hips.
"You're standing around lookin' cute, I thought you were going to join me in the dirt," he teased back.
You both blushed. Not that either of you noticed the other was freaking out just as much. Alan couldn't believe he was so forward &, frankly, you couldn't gather that he might actually have feelings for you. You quickly turned around to hide your blush, Alan's heart sinking. You turned back around, with equal speed, brush in hand. You kneeled down on the dirt, leaning on your elbows & finding yourself in a similar position to Alan. You began brushing the dirt away. You tried to sneakily watch Alan to see if you were doing it right. His brows were furrowed as he brushed at the bone in front of him.
"Dr. Grant! I brought the supplies from this week's dropoff!" A student called out, a pile of boxes high enough to block their vision was shaking in their arms.
You couldn't help but freeze as the kid stepped towards the site. A few more steps & he'd surely step on the bones, inevitably freaking out & accidentally dropping everything. He'd be dead by dawn if Alan had anything to do with it. Luckily, Alan intervened early, shooting up quickly to stop the kid. A groan escaped him as he reached his hands out.
"James, the table is this way!" He tried not to sound too upset.
"Sorry, Dr. Grant!" James apologized as he turned towards the aforementioned table.
Alan's right hand darted to his back, applying pressure as best he could. You stood up slowly, noticing Alan's attempt at hiding the pained grimace on his face. You began walking towards him as he gripped his hat on his head, crushing it between his fingers.
"Professor!" Your focus was drawn to someone shouting your title, considering you were the only non-doctor here, "You got some faxes, the receipts from today need to be revised & sent to the school!"
You realized now it was your assistant calling out, a student volunteer getting work experience in the weirdest of locations. You thanked them as you grazed a hand over Alan's back.
"Please rest," you whispered to him as you walked away.
As you went off to do your work, it was Alan's turn to freeze. He may be good under pressure, when deadlines are coming, or even when dinosaurs think he would make a perfect midnight snack; But god did he feel absolutely helpless under your touch. He felt himself leaning into the touch & now he was stuck in this awkward bent hip position. He sighed as he adjusted his posture, convincing himself that it wasn't your touch that suddenly made the pain go away. Coincidence, he'll call it. He got back into an uncomfortable position, determined to get a good look at this fossil by nightfall.
By the time you left your "office" tent, it was dark. You looked towards the dig site to see some floodlights pointed towards the fossil. A couple eager students, & likely, Dr. Alan were hard at work. Dr. Sattler would soon come to end their fun & make sure the students got their 8 hours of rest in. You decided bed sounded much more comfortable than attempting to get them to sleep anyways. You opened the door to your trailer, letting it shut behind you. You toed off your shoes & took off your button-up & pants, changing into less dusty clothes before climbing into bed. You gave it one last good stretch before plopping onto your bed. You got comfortable, adjusting a couple pillows before feeling right.
A couple knocks hit your door, "Y/N, are you awake?"
Alan was trying to be quiet in case you were asleep but you could tell he needed to see you. You stood up slower than usual, you were tired after all, & opened the trailer door. Alan's arms twitched up slightly, he retracted them.
"Can I-"
You interrupted him, "Of course."
Alan's arms darted around your waist. From his place, a step below you on the trailer stairs, his head reached the crook of your neck. He nestled into place quickly, as if you had done this a million times. In reality, you & Dr. Grant had hugged once.
That time he hadn't asked, he knew he caught you off guard & he beat himself up about it ever since. It was his first day back on campus after he mysteriously left for an island with Dr. Sattler. You had come in to check on him after your classes, which happened to be late that night, & found him in his office. He was hunched over his work, head in his hands. The office door was left ajar, maybe he was still running office hours? Nonetheless, you pushed the door open slightly & knocked as you did so. You seemed to scare the life out of him. He jumped back & out of his seat, throwing papers into the air with him.
He yelled something barely intelligible, sounding maybe like, "GET BACK!"
"Alan! It's me, Y/N," You tried to calm your colleague as you walked toward him, his eyes were going everywhere but in your direction.
You managed to get a couple feet in front of him, his hand was clutching his chest & his breathing was beyond fast.
"Alan, I need you to take deeper breaths," You spoke as you reached out to touch his hand, "Please."
Finally, his eyes met yours, your hand wrapping around the one that held his chest so tightly. The genuine look of concern in your eyes grounded him. He looked around the room to see he was safe in his, albeit, now messy, office. Without thinking he scooped you into a hug. You were shocked at first by the sudden movement, your hands took a moment to find their place. In the moment, Alan didn't process that he caught you off guard, that would haunt him later. Right now, you were the one thing making him know he was safe, & holding you felt right. He had barely spoken to you before this. You were another teacher in the giant school that was U of M. But in the few times he's spoken to you, he's fallen hard. It surprised him that you stopped by, he was hoping you weren't there to ask him about Jurrasic Park.
You never did, & after that night you were always around. You sat in on his lessons & he even sat in on yours on the rare occasion. You offered to talk to him about whatever happened if he ever wanted, he never did. Alan was stubborn that way, he didn't like talking about feelings.
So you'd be lying if you said it didn't shock you when Alan asked to come into your trailer late that night. He sat down on the "kitchen" chair & looked up at you, pulling his hat off & setting it in his lap. His eyes quickly decided looking at the floor was more comfortable.
"Sorry, if I'm intruding, I had a rough day."
"You're not intruding, Alan, you never are," you tried to find eye contact but there was none, "You want to talk about anything?"
A long moment of silence sat between you. Alan was clearly fighting himself on something. Finally, a sigh escaped him.
"Do you remember... that night in my office?"
He didn't have to explain, of course, you knew, "Yes."
"It happened again, last night."
"I'm so sorry, Alan."
"Don't be," He had a clear train of thought & you couldn't break it, "I fell & hurt my back, I was terrified. I wanted to run to you but the fear that something was outside kept me trapped."
He wanted to run... to you?
"I've been in so much pain all day," he continued, "& it felt so isolating to keep last night to myself, bad isolating. When you just knew something was wrong-"
Alan stood up & took your hands in his, his eyes found yours just as quickly, "How did you know?"
"You looked, not like you, if that makes sense. I just knew."
Alan's hands darted to the sides of your face but yet again, froze. His eyes were filled with determination & fear. You weren't scared. You lifted your hands to guide him. His hands now resting on each side of your jawline. In the silence, Alan lightly traced a line across your cheek with his right thumb. You gave him the smallest of nods, looking deep into his eyes. Alan pulled you in for a deep kiss, a sigh escaping him when you kissed back. In a moment, you were separated again.
"Mind if I stay the night?" Alan spoke softly.
"I would love that."
A/N: This took me so long & I can't believe I didn't get burnt out. I am so happy with this.

Love Finds A Way (Ian Malcolm X Reader)

Request: Hello!! I love your Ian malcolm x reader so far and I was just wondering if you could do another one (either set in the first or second movie) where ian and the reader get separated and it freaks Ian out until they find each other again and ian decides to confess his feelings maybe? Thanks!
A/N: Let's go! I've never written anything set in the first movie but that movie moves a lot faster so forgive me cutting through to get to the good bits. I spared you every dinosaur chase scene, you're welcome. Enjoy!
This trip was a mistake, you realized that now covered in mud and sitting in a tree.
Come along, Ian had suggested, it’ll be fun. It wasn’t fun now, you’d be sure to remind him of that… if you ever saw him again. Even though you had wanted to stay behind with Ian, Alan had convinced you to join him and the kids.
Now, the other three were getting some shuteye. How they could sleep with all of this around them, you would never know. You watched the Brachiosaurs eat from the safety of your vantage point. All the joy and wonder you had felt earlier on the tour was now gone, replaced with a feeling of dread deep in the pit of your stomach.
There was no way you were getting out of this alive, even with the help of the amazing Dr. Alan Grant. You had never been a fearless fighter or particularly intelligent.
“You’re still awake?” Dr. Grant asked softly. You had thought he was asleep but it appeared he’d just been resting eyes. He didn’t even look like the man you’d met earlier that day, each of his arms wrapped around one of the children he had despised.
You shrugged your shoulders. “I’m worried about Dr. Malcolm, that’s all.”
It was a fair worry, he was your friend and mentor. The two of you had spent a lot of time together both in the workplace and out. You liked to think there was an inseparable bond between the two of you, something that rarely anyone else had. No matter how many wives or girlfriends he went through, what was between you both would never change.
“He’s fine. As long as he stays still, even if the T. Rex circles back, he’ll live.”
Realistically, you knew he was right but still. Nobody but the four of you knew where he was and you had no idea how to get to the others. Worst vacation ever, Ian owed you one if the two of you got off this stinking island alive.
Meanwhile, Dr. Ian Malcolm was in a panic himself. His leg was in pain, but it was dull compared to his worry for you. Now that he wasn’t being chased by a giant meat eating dinosaur, he could think properly and he had noticed your absence.
There were two options; you were laying out there dead somewhere (which he hated to think about, that couldn’t be the one) or you were wherever Dr. Grant and Hammond’s grandchildren were.
“We should be out there looking for them,” he tried to shift but his leg was in worse shape than he thought. Ellie hurried forward, scolding him for moving and putting himself in pain. She was obviously worried for Alan as well, they had issues, the two of them.
Was being in love with a workplace friend a common occurrence because it seemed like they were in the exact same department and- Oh god, if you and Alan died they would never get to tell them. More importantly he would never get to tell you.
At some point, Gennaro and Ellie leave to go look for Arnold, leaving him and Hammond to guide them to where they needed to go. He tried to keep his head in the game as much as possible, his survival and the others depended on it but he was too worried about you.
This had to be some sick twisted joke the universe had decided to play on him, he didn’t tell the one he loved he loved them when he had the chance, he fooled around with so many people... and this was his sick and twisted comeuppance.
He supposed if that was what was going on he deserved it, but damn it if he didn’t wish his leg was better so he could be out there looking for you.
How many adults did it take to hold a door shut against one Velociraptor? Apparently, three. You, Alan and Ellie leaned against the door, trying your best to keep it shut while Lex and Tim figured out the computer system.
“This is where we die,” you muttered under your breath as Ellie tried desperately to reach for the shotgun that was just out of her grasp.
“You did it!” Tim shouted and just like that the locks were on the doors.
The relief was short lived, but such is life when you’re on a dinosaur infested island. The five of you escaped through the vents, making your way back to the main entrance of the visitors building. It was a race against time (and Velociraptors), but in the end, you all made it safely back to the ground and the T. Rex took care of the raptors.
“Come on,” Alan ushered the kids, you and Ellie out the front door. You felt like you were going to pass out just from the adrenaline. Hammond and Ian were waiting outside in the jeep but you couldn’t bring yourself to say anything to either of them as you climbed in. Alan said something but you leaned back in the jeep seat, releasing a breath you didn’t even know you’d been holding.
You weren’t home safe yet but it sure felt like it.
After that, everything was a blur. The helicopter ride home was silent, everyone contemplating everything they had just witnessed on the island. For once, even the great Ian Malcolm had nothing to say.
You leaned against him and he let you, clearly just as happy as you were to be in the same vicinity once again.
Upon landing in Costa Rica, the group went their separate ways. Hammond went off with his grandchildren, Ellie needed medical care and Alan went with her, Ian needed his own care so you went with him. You wondered if you’d ever get to see those people again. It was a strange thing to bond over, but you felt like you were all that much closer now that you’d been through this together.
Ian was out for a while so you pulled up a chair and slept beside the hospital bed.
“(Y/n)?” You awoke to someone saying your name, visions of giant lizard monsters danced in your vision for a few moments longer as you blinked awake.
You would surely be having nightmares of that for a long time.
Ian was awake, he had shifted himself into a sitting position, his hand on yours. You met his eyes, there was a lot that needed to be said. You wanted to tell him everything that had happened, with Alan and the kids and the raptors and-
You hugged him instead, it was strange, even though the two of you were fairly close, neither of you had ever been huge fans of physical contact.
He hugged you back though.
“That was the worst vacation ever…” You whispered, pulling away slightly to look into his eyes.
He chuckled. “Next time you can pick, no more dinosaur islands. I promise.”
You suddenly became aware of the very little space between the two of you. This was the closest the two of you had ever been in a non joking manner. It felt like being separated from each other on a dinosaur infested island had changed something in your dynamic, though you weren’t sure what it was. The smile on his face faded slightly and he reached up, closing the distance between the two of you, hand gently pressed to your cheek.
That’s what it was. The dynamic between you two had DEFINITELY changed.
“I’ve, uh, always wanted to do that.” He sounded slightly guilty, pulling away.
There were butterflies in your stomach and somehow the world seemed to be spinning. You laughed nervously, something about experiencing this so soon after a near death experience was hilarious to you.
"Funnily enough, me too," you admit, pressing your forehead to his. It's really too soon to know what this really means or if this is all just a crazy reaction to being separated and not able to see each other but you don't even care.
You could put a label on it later, he would agree. For now the two of you had each other and you were never letting go. And if Ian asked you to sleep with him later that night and if the two of you awoke each other from nightmares screaming only to comfort each other, nobody else needed to know.
You'd always had a special bond. This just made it stronger.

Happy 56th Birthday to the multi-talented Scottish actor Alan Cumming born on January 27, 1965 in Aberfeldy.
I would just like to point out that while it states Aberfeldy on his bio on wiki  I would assume he was actually born in the biggest town nearby, being Perth, this is true in lots of Wiki bio’s, but I may be wrong.
His family lived in a variety of towns when he was young,Dunkeld, where his father was a forester for Atholl Estate, Fassfern near Fort William, before moving to the east coast of Scotland in 1969, where Alan's father took up the position of Head Forester of Panmure Estate; it was there that Alan mainly grew up. He went to Monikie Primary School and Carnoustie High School, where he began appearing in plays, and soon after that began working with with the Carnoustie Theatre Club and Carnoustie Musical Society. In 1981, he left high school with some great exam results in several subjects, but because he was too young to enter any university or drama school he worked for just over a year as a sub-editor at D.C. Thomson Publishers in Dundee. There he worked on the launch of a new magazine, "Tops", and was also the "Young Alan" who answered readers' letters.
In September 1982 he began a three-year course at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. He graduated in 1985 with a B.A. (Dramatic Studies) and awards for verse speaking and direction. He also had formed a cabaret double act with fellow student Forbes Masson called Victor and Barry, which went on to become hugely successful with tours (including two Perrier Pick of the Fringe seasons in London and a month-long engagement at the Sydney Opera House as part of an Australian tour), records and many TV appearances throughout the British Isles. Before graduating Alan made his professional theatre and film debuts in Macbeth at the Tron Theatre in Glasgow and in Gillies MacKinnon's Passing Glory.
After graduating, Alan worked extensively in Scottish theatre and television, including a stint on the soap opera High Road before moving to London when Conquest of the South Pole, a play by German playwright Manfred Karge, transferred from the Traverse Theatre in, Edinburgh to the the Royal Court in London, earning him his first Olivier award nomination for Most Promising Newcomer of 1988.
Alan performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company and then the Royal National Theatre, where he starred in Accidental Death of an Anarchist, which he also adapted with director Tim Supple. The production was nominated for Best revival at the 1991 Olivier awards and Alan won for Comedy Performance of the Year. His film career began with Ian Sellar's Prague , in which he starred with Sandrine Bonnaire and Bruno Ganz. The film premiered at the 1992 Cannes film festival and went on to win him Best Actor award at the Atlantic Film Festival and a Scottish BAFTA Best Actor nomination. In the same year he made two films for the BBC.
In the 1992 Olivier awards got his second nomination for Comedy Performance of the Year for La Bete. The next year he played Hamlet for the English Touring Theatre to great critical acclaim  going on to play the Emcee in Sam Mendes' revival of Cabaret. He received a 1994 Olivier award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical for "Cabaret", and for Hamlet he received the 1994 TMA Best Actor award and a Shakespeare Globe award nomination.
In 1994, he made his first Hollywood film, Circle of Friends then two films released in quick succession Emma and GoldenEye as a talented hacker, Boris Grishenko, these films brought him to be noticed by further American producers, and he appeared in several Hollywood films, such as Romy and Michele's High School Reunion and Buddy.
Returning home briefly in 1997 to work with Stanley Kubrick and the Spice Girls before reprising his role in Cabaret on Broadway. The show and his portrayal were a sensation, and he received the many plaudits and awards  for his performance including a Tony  for Best Actor in a Musical
Since then he has alternated between theatre and films, and also between smaller independent films and more mainstream fare. His films include Julie Taymor's Titus, the Spy Kids trilogy, X-Men 2, Son of the Mask and the Showtime movie musical Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical, and Battle of the Sexes.
Cumming's TV work includes Taggart, of course!  The short lived Scottish sitcom The High Life,  Travelling Man, Third Rock from the Sun, Sex and the City, Foyles War and Dr Who. He is probably best known for starring in the US  legal and political drama The Good Wife
Alan lives in Manhattan  with his husband, illustrator Grant Shaffer, he has been nominated and won too many awards to mention here, and has champion causes for the  LGBT community worldwide. He published a novel,, Tommy’s Tale in 2002,  centring on the life of a bisexual guy living in London, and his biography  Not My Father's Son, Cumming describes the emotional and physical violence his father inflicted on him in his childhood, he became estranged from his father in his early 20′s and it wasn’t until filming  Who Do You Think You Are in 2010 he spoke to him, his father telling him he suspected he wasn’t his biological father, Alan, along with his brother later had DNA tests which  proved they were indeed his biological children.
Alan Cummings has no fewer than 7 projects in the pipeline just now, probably a bit of a backlog due to the pandemic, the one I look forward to most is in the excellent Fox TV series Prodigal son, he will appear in two episodes as Simon Hoxley, a supremely confident and cocky Europol agent and profiler. Yesterday he posted on hi Instagram “ I got an early birthday present to wear at our Burns supper last night! “
Alan has just released a great version of the Dougie MacLean song Caledonia along with KT Tunstall, you can watch the version they sang live in the video I will posT or the studio version recorded last year before covid caught hold on Spotify here https://open.spotify.com/album/53YOzgvPfrxXPZFgJRPtw6?highlight=spotify:track:4xzfbcKpKLt8p0CteIMSDX
