Dragon Age fanfic authors rejoice! You no longer have to stop writing that cooking scene to go research what ingredients would plausibly be available in fantasy medieval Europe.
Something I pre-ordered a very long time ago finally arrived today:
Tumblr media
And for those of you who have, like me, been wondering whether cooks in Thedas have access to New World ingredients, the answer is yes:
Tumblr media
So I'm going to headcanon that Par Vollen is the culinary equivalent of the Americas in Thedas (since we already know from Iron Bull's banter that they also have cocoa) and that there has been sufficient international trade in agricultural products (probably via Rivain) for potatoes and other New World staple crops to be grown in southern Thedas.

what do the directors cuts of breach and dragonback look like? I know you've mentioned being burned out on overwatch, so I'll leave a ⭐️ if you'd rather answer that instead.
Ask me about one of my fanfic's Directors' cuts!
The Director's cut of "Breach" is--my brain just put that whole fic together basically as an AMV set to David Bowie's "Modern Love." You know that one Studio Ghibli music video? It would be coordinated to the music like that. Okay, on a more serious note, though, when I first came up with Aedan as a character, I never actually planned on giving him a redemption arc. Honestly my followers were shipping Reidan before I was--I was hesitant to ship my fankids at all because I was still writing out cutesy stuff for them that focused more on like, how parenthood was affecting their respective guardians. But then I dropped Aedan in there about the same time I was starting to draw Rei as a teenager, starting to write out her 'kit' as a hypothetical Overwatch hero, I was starting to write Marti being mentored by Jack. So the kids were basically slowly tipping into that "next-gen hero" zone when Aedan gets added to the mix.
You can all thank @the-legion for Aedan's whole characterization as we know him now, because Legion pretty much hit me with something like, "It's just I always felt sorry for the Clones in the Clone Wars, and I always liked when they became more than what they were made to be. When they fought against what they had been created for." So for me, that kind of morphed into, "Okay wait, Moira's a perfectionist, and also when you become a parent, you have this drive to make sure your kid has the resources and support you didn't--what if Moira ends up making someone a lot more sympathetic than herself." It's so funny though--literally my first drawing of him interacting with Rei was captioned, "Rei doesn't like him," but I think even then I was kind of subconsciously sympathetic towards Aedan because in that drawing Rei's visibly chewing him out and he's just kind of standing there, taking it, albeit in a broody way. Like my earliest iterations of Aedan kind of had him as more of a mini-Moira, but like, as soon as I started writing fics about his actual clone origins, I was like, "Oh--yeah, actually he's very sympathetic."
So Breach kind of became the culmination of that--and it's also like... I didn't want Aedan's redemption arc to come without incredible loss. You don't choose the right thing to do because it's easy, or even because you like a pretty girl, in the end Reaper summarizes it the most succinctly: Aedan chooses what he chooses because Moira gave him everything she never had.
The loss of Rei's dragon also hooks into that, "No redemption without incredible loss" but also that came from a decision of, "As part of maturing Rei's character, I have to force her to experience life outside of Overwatch so she's not just falling into continuing her parents' fight." It was also to demonstrate that there was no way Aedan crossing over from one side to the other would be clean. He doesn't get to arrive in Overwatch to trumpets and fanfare because Rei's still gone through this incredible trauma. De-powering arcs in comics always stressed me out so bad, or sometimes they would bore me because "you're taking away an important part of this character for angst or to shove them to the side" but actually putting Rei through this showed me their general value. It basically kept Rei and Aedan from automatically plunging into their romance after the redemption arc, forced it to more of a slow burn, and, of course, it gave me a chance to kind of, shape that Genji-esque fierce cheerfulness in Rei by dropping her in Hollywood as a stuntwoman while also giving that part of her character a deeper and more mature dimension. And you see that at the beginning of Dragonback.
The Director's cut of Dragonback is me going, "How many 90's teen coming of age/romcom tropes can I jam into these kids' existential crises?" This fic I think came a lot more quickly because there were a lot of elements that I had kind of established in my head--it's Overwatch's first brush with Andrea, it's Rei getting her dragon back, it's Rei and Aedan finally smooching. These were basically dominos that were set up as far back as Breach, they just needed time to percolate with the whole "Rei in Hollywood" bit. I think writing this fic taught me a lot about writing action scenes--I wanted Faustine to basically be a metal gear boss, I wanted Andrea to be terrifying, and I'm basically writing two simultaneous fight scenes which is basically just Genji trying to get to Rei and Aedan. I also knew I wanted to beat the shit out of Aedan as kind of a reversal of him being the 'hero' back in Breach and to also keep the focus on Rei. It's also partially establishing, "Rei doesn't love Aedan because she's dependent on him, but the seed of this whole thing is the fact that they've irrevocably changed each other." Also she needs to save him because #Feminism. I think like... this fic also really helped solidify the appeal of Rei and Aedan as star-crossed for me. Like, I think one of the things that kind of made me hesitant to ship them was the fear of the whole, "Rival families" cliche--like I think this fic's conclusion basically goes, "There is so much that is out of these kids' hands, so much in play that they never had control of since the day they were born, but they get to have this. They get to make this little space."
Also this fic ended up setting up my theory about the Shimada Dragons, which like... I dunno. You couldn't pay me to read about Kiriko, so as far as I care, that's the explanation for the Shimada dragons I'm going to go with.

Me
Name: Robin
Pronouns: any
Interests: MANY. This is a multifandom blog and I’m a millennial so it ranges over decades of fandoms.
I do try to tag most everything, and I don’t mind being asked to add tags to posts ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
If you want to, you’re welcome to go through the backlog of this tumblr. I’ve been here since 2012 so there’s a lot 💀
You can always follow or unfollow at any time; I don’t track that sort kind of thing unless we get hit by spambots again.
My stuff
My ao3 handle is also Robinade.
Robin writes; my writing tag on tumblr, 99.9% fanfic. My current writing fandoms are MDZS (you might know it by the Netflix show name The Untamed) and Star Wars (Obi-Wan centric), but in the past I’ve written one-shots for Our Flag Means Death and Cobra Kai (*cough*smut*cough*)
You are always welcome to message me questions or comments about fanfic.
Robin arts; mostly fanart and I’m still getting the hang of painting on procreate tbh
Robin recs: fanfic, books, and artists I’d like to recommend.
Helpful tags
Obligatory rickroll
Realistically speaking tumblr’s tag search is garbo so if you REALLY want to find something you go into google and you type “site:[username].tumblr.com” without quotes or spaces and then a space and your search term/tag (if it’s multiple words then you do want to enclose those words in quotes. Example👉 site:robinade.tumblr.com “click in case of sadness”
To lift your spirit I got cute animals, click in case of sadness, and relaxing. No jump scares here! Also the nostalgia tag if you want to experience life as a 90s kid. Quizzes to pass the time.
Useful stuff (for general help), reference, resources, the more you know. Internet and tumblr tags will often also have useful info and tips. Science! and SPACE tags have fun stuff too.
IN THEORY most of the fandoms below have dedicated art tags but I’m shit at remembering to tag every time.
Fandom tags with the biggest backlog: dragon age (da art), mcu (marvel art), tolkienish (encompasses both lotr and hobbit) (tolkien art), and star wars (sw art).
Other fandoms you will likely encounter: star trek (st art), dc comics and batman (dc art), mdzs (mdzs art), dungeon meshi, pokemon, dungeons and dragons, our flag means death (ofmd art), the witcher, doctor who (dw art), discworld (discworld art), sailor moon (sm art), yu yu hakusho.
Artsy tags: I stopped tagging things as fanart when I realized that’s often a grey area but there’s still a lot of backlog there. Otherwise the fandom name will contain all the art. Amazing art, art history, painting, process art (where you see it from beginning to end), crafty, textile art.
Writey tags: writing (for all writing in general), fanfic (specifically for things relating to fandom writing), ao3 (for archive-related things). Tumblr fic is for short stories hosted directly on tumblr.

Tumblr media
I am so sorry you asked this, Nonnymouse, but here we go. First, let me tell you, I've been a writer for a very long time. I was a reader by the age of four, and by the age of eight, I was outlining and writing my first novel. When I was 14, my friends at school introduced me to a tabletop rpg {Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd. Edition: Dragonlance}. Role-play and writing have been lifelong past times and I become very involved in character creation. Fast-forward to 2014 when I saw CA: The Winter Soldier. Now of course I knew pertinent parts of the story from having been a comic book collector for some years, but there was something about the movie and the portrayal of SebStan that hurt my heart. I started to think the boy needed, in no particular order, a bath, a hug, a warm blanket, a kiss on the forehead, and a grilled cheese sandwich cut in half, diagonally. Two of my nearest and dearest suggested that maybe I write some fanfic, so I set about thinking about what kind of person would make a very good friend for Bucky Barnes. The first thing I decided was he would need someone who wouldn't be afraid of him, initially, and maybe someone who could patch up the kinds of wounds he might have after you know, someone dropped the Treskelion on him. Then I decided that she would need the kind of flexibility to drop everything for the sake of our tragic hero if need be, or to provide him with resources that he might need.
I wanted her to not fit into the mainstream. I wanted her to have a connection to the world without overshadowing the canons that already existed. I knew she would be Riley's sister. So she had to be part Irish. It was Beth herself who told me she was that, but more importantly, that she was Polynesian. Hawai'ian to be specific. It took me almost a year to learn about Hawai'i, the people and culture, the food and dress, the struggles of the people, and to teach myself how to read and write the language, and the slang {Pidgin}. It took me even longer to find a face claim for her and for Andy both. Eventually, when we were both happy with her bare bones/history, I decided that I wanted to get a sort of "feel" for her, and that's when Stoat {my roomie extraordinaire over at @morgansmornings} told me about Tumblr and told me maybe I could try her out here.
2016, in September, she made her debut. The first three people who ever befriended me were another OC {@multi-mused}, a John Constantine {I miss you, Nick!}, and a Loki { @lokitheliesmith}, the first and latter whom I still play with! And while I did make Beth for Bucky, she grew and changed and became a little breathing being all of her own. Some of her background stems from my own, some of her personality from my nearest and dearest friend, but like a child you have and raise, she had some fundamentals, but ultimately she created herself, evolved and changed based on her experiences and circumstances, and she's her own person now.
some influences include: 1. The lyrics for this song. 2. This tabletop role playing game, arguably my most favourite. 3. Just how cute and tiny is Kristin Kreuk? 4. And honest to goodness, all of you who have interacted with her, leaving your own marks on her, to which I am grateful for. If that isn't the questions you were asking, then please feel free to ask others, dm me, or hit me up on disco. <3

What I should be doing:
Work
NaNoWriMo writing (This year an aging dragons fanfic)
What am I actually currently doing:
Researching cocaine’s general origins and how / when it started being cultivated mainly as a controlled drug
It’s not even research for my actual WriMo, just a vaguely adjacent idea I have in the same fandom
Technically it does count as working on the story?? But like also no it doesn’t
(Resource I’m currently looking at is cocaine.org which 1. Impressively straightforwards name, 2. Not jokingly, legit a good site I think; really clear and informative, largely focused on addiction recovery)

For the Fan Fic emoji ask: 🥺💖🤩 and most importantly✨
🥺 - moments/interactions between characters that give me FEELINGS
I am obsessed with parents realising that they’ve failed their kids somehow, even though they tried their best with the resources they were given, and hoping their children forgive them, but understanding if they don’t — especially if said parent dies while still not really KNOWING.
… The fact that it took me so long to realise many of my works are about intergenerational trauma in some capacity is hilarious in hindsight. 😅
💖 - what made you start writing?
I don’t really remember a time in my life when I wasn’t writing in some capacity, which was also a hilarious realisation in hindsight, because it truly took me almost thirty years to comprehend that other people don’t feel this burning urge to articulate all of their thoughts on the outside.
But yeah. I struggle to articulate my thoughts without imagining an audience, and growing up as an only child made writing a very accessible format to me :P I think I just never appreciated how regular my writing practice was because it was always just like. Jotted down on random bits of paper as a kid, or in long rambly texts to friends (my partner and I used to regularly send each other 1000+ word text messages on a daily basis before we moved in together, and immediately revert back to it whenever we’re apart for more than a few days, lol).
This reminds me, I really need to back up my high school era LJ at some point because I was regularly writing 1000+ word posts about my feelings on there, I just didn’t consider it “real writing” bc I think honestly until I started doing heaps of exchanges the other year, I never really wrote with any intent, I just literally cannot shut up.
tl;dr: adhd probably 🥲😅
🤩: favourite character to write
it’s usually my favourite love interest of whoever my blorbo is at the time! so currently that’s Orsino from Dragon Age, who I find much easier to write than Meredith 😅
✨: give my own writing a compliment!
I’ve been told often enough that my strength lies in clear, readable prose and strong distinct character voices that I’m starting to believe it 🫣
Also, I’m really proud of the improvements I’ve made in placing/plotting over the last couple of years — I can write things where stuff actually happens now!

Hi! I’m a different anon than you responded to, and I get absolutely everything that you’re saying about not everyone being good and moral because I have seen it over on Twitter, but idk how much of the rpg community writes for fandoms, but over here on the indie side there is so much writing for fandoms, and many of the fandoms that get a lot of traction are YA media like Legacies for example, or more recently House of the Dragon. And while a lot of people do seem to make their own icons, it’s wild to me seeing resources made like that for public use while also expecting writers to essentially not write the characters those faceclaims play, you know what I mean? and on an unrelated but similar note: people making resources from shows that feature darker content but saying people cant use them for the exact same content featured but i digress The dissonance is just funny over all to me, because while I absolutely agree whole heartedly that the people who are gross are gross, they’re not going to stop, and they’ll just go private with everything if they feel they need to to stop people from going after them.
hi, it's skye.       (related to this post)  hola friendo, and ty for the support. i have actually never rper outside of tumblr, so i have no clue what happens in twitter world. BUT, you're actually right on my train of thought yk? one of the things that is so hard to mitigate is the fandom love, i'm one of them straight up and down. i haven't dabbled in a straight fandom character (i have made OCs in the world though, or a rpg set in the world) in a long, long time. given i haven't dipped into that world in ages idk what its like on tumblr, i have been OC'ing it up for at least 5 years now. however i do agree that if you are making resources for underage actors in lead roles, read: ya lit and fandoms, medieval fandoms, high school ones too, it's absolutely wild to not allow someone to use them. there needs to be a clear standard that the content creators set out and i def think i have seen some people on HOD packs note that they ask that people not use the underage FC in taboo and nasty stuff, which can be difficult in that genre, but i know firsthand it is completely avoidable. if someone has a blanket rule for all their content, its kinda unfair to make a pack that goes against their statements and lowkey tantalise people in that way. i personally havent seen it, but i can sympathise with the frustration.
the fandom issue is super hard, because that blanket rule does technically include many of our favourites. i have a legion of characters i would love to play or play again, but the rules have made it a bit harder from what i can tell. i'd be curious how admins of these fandom rpgs handle it, i'm certain they're still out there. like... how could you leave hogwarts behind?? when it comes to the indie verse, i have also spent a few years there and actually came to love it. independent writers who make their own resources and the like have a lot more freedom, they are bound by their own rules and it's by those rules that people find mutuals and thread partners. from what i remember, its a system that worked and gave AMPLE room for fandom characters (i played canon characters from YA fandoms in the indie verse actually). again though, i haven't been back in that community so i can't speak on it now.
i think the general vibe, when it comes/came to fandoms, is that if it is a universe bound in young adult land (again, i'm thinking hogwarts as my example), there is room for movement because they are real characters in a real world and we just get to create a group fanfic lmao. if it were me and i was running a RPG in that world, i think i would model mine off the later years (senior? i think americans call it? the last two years) because it's more realistic for a 17 year old to experiencing their own maturity. we all did it. i do not condone using underage actors for smut, lbc, however first kisses and dates? these are acceptable moral issues to handle in that young adult fandom realm. but i would tackle it with great care and great planning, some people will try and push the boundaries sadly. someone with recent knowledge will have to lmk whats the deal 🙏🏾 but look genuinely i cant speak for the fandom side, i think i outgrew the desire to rp in the YA fandom in general, i love the worlds though but i don't vibe with characters that (for me) are a decade younger than myself.
i also agree that whoever is doing the Bad Shit will continue, its such a shitty fact of life, but i have to believe that if we manage to force them into a private space at least we won't be exposed to it and therefore avoid potentially triggering content coming across and impacting our mental health. i'm lucky enough to not have a visceral reaction to written content, but many many many ppl are not that fortunate. we just gotta work together when this happens, and if not, simply block and move on if nothing else. sometimes thats all we can do. protect ourselves and hopefully, each other.
LASTLY tho, by darker themed shows are you talking like... saw franchise? horror vibes? blood/gore? or like a sexual thriller? thats just where my mind goes to be honest. i'm probably missing something lmao so fill me in if so!! but i sincerely do not understand the concept of making a gifpack from a 'darker themed' show/movie and then... not allowing someone to portray darker or mature themes? isn't that kind of redundant? i made two gif packs from a martial arts action film and i wouldn't disallow people from portraying fighting/violence because... that was the genre i giffed? personally, i havent seen it happen, but i do believe you. of course 'darker themes' can obvs mean different things to everyone, everyone has their own boundaries and standards of belief, but like... don't make a gifpack of a Heavy Topic show/movie and then disallow people to utilise the pack, aesthetics or role it was of that actor. that seems hella silly on face value 🥴

Country vs. Adjective - a Dragon Age Fanfic Resource
I read fanfiction. I get that generally, fanfiction is done for fun and love of the fandom (and believe me, that is A-OK). To that end, it’s not always the most researched thing, and typos and the like can abound, and I really shouldn’t let it get to me. I get this.
At the same time, I have this platform on which to ramble about stuff! And maybe someone might find this useful. Plus someone whose fic I’m following mentioned I should do this.
Today’s topic: proper noun vs. proper adjective within the world of Dragon Age (with a side jaunt into somewhat related stuff).
Frequently in DA fanfic I see spelling confusion when writing the name of a place vs. using that name as a proper adjective (which is when you take a proper noun and use it as an adjective). Some of the names are easier to do this with than others, and one in particular stands out (and is at the top of my list).
In short: [Country] is a location. You can be from [Country], or live in [Country], or visit [Country]. [Proper Adjective], on the other hand, is a descriptor. You can be [Adjective], wear [Adjective] clothing, eat [Adjective] food, etc.
Here are some real-world examples to demonstrate:
America — American France — French Finland — Finnish Egypt — Egyptian
You can see the different ways the proper noun shifts when being used as a proper adjective. So in this vein, here are the locales in Dragon Age and their proper adjective counterparts. These were sourced largely by scrolling through the fan wiki and making note of the internal style guide (or what evidence there was of one).
Ferelden — Fereldan Orlais — Orlesian Nevarra — Nevarran Antiva — Antivan Rivain — Rivaini Tevinter — Tevinter Anderfels — Anders Seheron — Seheron The Dales — Dalish
So if you’re from Ferelden, then you are Fereldan. It makes sense that this is the one that trips people up, since it’s one letter off.
There are outliers, of course. I can’t find an adjective form for Par Vollen. Everyone there is in the Qun, and is either Qunari or Viddathari. Avvar, meanwhile, describes the people and the culture that live in the Frostbacks but is not the name of a location. Same for Alamarri and Chasind. Similarly, I can’t find an adjective form for Orzammar; most things there are simply dwarven. Meanwhile, when it comes to elves, modern elves are “elven,” but ancient elves are “elvhen” (meaning “the People”). You can get away with the Dalish calling themselves “elvhen” (as both the proper noun and the adjective) but probably not city elves.
While we’re at it, remember that Qunari is capitalized, but human, elf/elven, elvhen, and dwarf are not. An outdated term for the precursors to the Qunari would be “kossith,” and it’s unclear if it refers to the race or the culture (note it is also not capitalized). If one of the horned humanoids has left the Qun, they become Tal-Vashoth (capitalized), but if they were never part of the Qun in the first place, they are Vashoth (capitalized).
There you go. That has been your lecture for today on how to spell things properly for your DA fic.

Can I ask what you used to learn & practice to write the way you do because a) I'd also like to improve my writing and b) because you are one of the most talented & extraordinary writer I've EVER come across on A03
Thank you so, so much, I'm honored! 😭 I can, absolutely!
So a big thing I used to learn writing is, I read a ton (had way more time for it a few years ago, but that's where a lot of the foundation was). And one of my English professors once told me, 'if you want to write a novel or story, go back and read your favorite books, but read them as a writer and not just as a reader'. And once I did, I understood what she meant. I'd read back over these books I loved, only now I was looking for why I loved them so much (and I still do this some when reading). If something hit me emotionally hard, why? Was it the body language? Their emphasis on description? If they set up an elaborate, 'SURPRISE!', how was it done? How did they lay clues? How did the author write this out? It helps a ton to look at the structural framework of something you love, and so one of the things you can easily use, that I used, is literally just your favorite books. My favorite series is Dresden Files, for example, and that's where I learned a lot about how one can write internal dialogue, action scenes, and laying clues. I also try to read books by popular authors (that I enjoy, don't get me wrong) so I can look at their techniques and hunt down new things to try. <3
Second, I'm going to rec one of my favorite books that helped me with learning to write emotions (which anyone who's read TRT knows I focus on fairly regularly). I literally always write with this nearby: The Emotion Thesaurus. The 1st edition I have has 75 emotions, and each has a connected list of physical body language signals, internal sensations, mental responses, cues of acute or long-term feeling of that emotion, and cues of suppression of that emotion. The 2nd edition now has 130 emotions (haven't had a chance to look through that one yet). That book helped teach me about linking emotion to sensory descriptions - physical, mental, internal, and then with time or suppression.
Third: if anywhere near you or online has a free class on creative writing and you have the time, I'd give it a shot! I took a fair amount of English classes in college, admittedly, but even once I was done, I kept an eye out and I've managed to get into some free or cheap classes. Some are pretty terrible, a lot are just middle of the road, and then every once in a while you get an amazing one where you hear hysterical gems like, "your job as an author is to cause pain. Embrace it! You're a sadist now," and then you learn how to torment characters with unique acts of suffering. So there's always something to learn, even in the terrible classes (it's sometimes just, 'don't do this one thing').
Writers Groups! I have had some very kind and very honest writers groups over the years that have helped me learn where my weaknesses were as a writer. One of my biggest issues used to be overdescription of everything (I wish I was joking, RIP to my early readers), and I didn't even realize it was a problem until I joined a writers group and they pointed out that things were a bit unnecessarily wordy.
Grammarly is something I use for every chapter. I generally edit my chapter, paste it into Grammarly, and then it hits me with a newspaper points out politely where I can take out some unnecessary commas. Grammarly reminds me not to get cocky. Grammarly humbles us all.
Those have been my biggest resources on learning over the years: published books I loved, books like The Emotion Thesaurus, taking writing classes whenever I could, writers groups, and Grammarly. I try to consider myself a constant student, always learning! After that, it's just practice-practice-practice. Pastafossa is, I think my third pseudonym over ohgodtoomanyyears of writing fanfic and original stories on and off. In the beginning, my fanfiction was terrible (seriously, I found some the other day on an old hard drive and, good god 😂). I've tried my hand at one-shots, parody (I wrote a bad smut fic for Dragon Age a while back and LORD that was wild), humor, prompt challenges. Try everything! Some of it will fail miserably, but much like the terrible writing classes, at least you learn something, and then you use that for next time. ❤️

How I translate elvhen
In my post-modern character in Thedas fic Coiling Time, the time travelling protagonist Malika understands every language spoken or written. In a fantasy world, that’s quite handy, don’t you think?
The obvious downside — When Malika is present in canon scenes from Dragon Age: Inquisition, some of the dialogue is in untranslated conlangs — namely, qunlat and elvhen. I’m not complaining about the presence of languages we’re not supposed to understand; in the context of the games, it makes for an interesting tension that the character (and player) isn’t able to understand every single word around them. However, due to the magic of her time travelling apparatus, Malika is supposed to be able to parse the meaning out of these overheard conversations — which I, as a fanfic writer from Earth, do not. Cheesecake, it would seem I shot myself in the foot.
However, as I see it, untranslated passages of canon are an opportunity to surprise your canon-savvy readers through either decoding that which hasn’t been decoded before, or through imbuing it with new meanings and nuance to suit your needs. Elvhen, especially, is a wonderful conlang in that most words carry many meanings and possible interpretations.
Tumblr media
Since I got through this process, and no readers have complained about my unauthorized translations, I thought I’d share how I did it. As an example, I’ll use the dialogue with the spirit guards we meet on one of the towers overlooking the fortress of Fen’Harel in the Dragon Age: Inquisition Trespasser DLC. These are sentences that, even if an Inquisitor drank from the Well of Sorrows, they do not understand — but my poor Malika had to know what the phantom elvhen says. So let’s take a look.
The goal here is to come not up with a translation that is accurate, but one that works for your story. As a caveat, this process goes against pretty much every single linguistics methodology I have ever heard of, and I don’t mean that in a good way. The first step already abandons a lot of what would be considered really important data.
Starting point: get the words down on paper
The first step for me is to get down whatever the subtitling of the scene says. A game writer friend at another AAA studio shared that the subtitling is usually the writing, as done by the actual writers of the game - it’s oftentimes easier that way to keep them in order, it prepares them for localization and recording, and they can be used to automate mouth movements, even. The reason I start by getting the subtitles, is that the actor speaking the lines? Barring some fantastical machinations, they’re not fluent in elvhen, and it’s also rather unlikely that the writer of the line was present during recording (been there as well). But do make a note of what the inflection is. It might also not quite hit the mark every time, but it can serve as a baseline of what the mood of the line is.
So, at this point we have the following two lines from the spirit guard:
Atish’all vallem, Fen’Harel elathadra.
Nuvenas mana helanin, dirth bellasa ma.
A branching outcome - depending on whether the Inquisitor took the Well:
(Well of Sorrows - good outcome)
Inquisitor: Ar-melana dirthavaren, Revas vir-anaris.
Guard: Amae lethalas.
(No well of Sorrows - bad outcome)
Guard: Virthar ma. Na din’an sahlin!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Screenshots are useful at this stage.
Compare to canon and fanon
Next up, I’ll scour Project Elvhen (P.E.) and the Fandom wiki to find a rough translation for most of the lines and copy it into my document. I’ll pick out any words that kind of make sense as being parts of the translation.
Project Elvhen is an absolutely amazing resource, in that it both collects canon translations and speculative ones (fanon), as well as delves into the grammar of this made up language. However… Based on BioWare Q&A streams (and my own experience with localization management) elvhen isn’t complete nor is it always spelled consistently in the games (if I remember correctly, Twitter discussions suggest that, for instance, apostrophes are sometimes left out). Rumor has it BioWare has its own internal Wiki for keeping track of things and another of sorts to keep track of their conlangs, but that doesn’t guarantee they’re always grammatically consistent.
Of course it’s also possible that some words, especially barks, would just be gibberish, but I still recommend assuming there is an intended meaning and canon translation of eah line, and trying to decipher enough of it to have a rough idea of what the writers might have intended. It also helps to think of how the line is used. Is it a greeting? An insult?  A command?
Amae lethalas.
Ama would be used when talking about protecting your daughter.
lethal n. kin, or family, specifically very close kin or family.

as - plural? innumerable?
(protect + family) (spec.)
Conclusion: (protect + family + many)
Virthar ma!
vir (a way path, route, or road)
tharia (wheel)
Ma pron. sb. sg. You
Conclusion: (a way + wheel (?) + you)
Na din’an sahlin!
na (you)
Din adj. adv. n. death, dead, no
an n. place
sahl'in adv. n. now, in this moment, currently
Conclusion: (you + death + place + now)
Tumblr media
... ‘A way wheel you?’ Not to be too critical, but ‘You death place now’ doesn’t quite roll off the tongue, does it?
Tumblr media
Context, to con through text
So, I have a rough translation of individual words. Now it’s time to do the dirty work. At this stage, I start looking at what I want the conversation to say, in the context of my story, and start adjusting the sentences. Nudging, if you will. Choose which option of the different meanings makes most sense.
After finding the rough words that could be some kind of match:
Atish’all vallem, Fen’Harel elathadra. (atish + alin + vallas, Fen’Harel + ela + unknown) (peace + stranger + writing, marking, Fen’Harel + be able to + unknown)
I make myself some options, twisting and turning the words:
Atish’all vallem, Fen’Harel elathadra.
Peace, stranger with the mark of Fen’Harel’s permission.
Peace, marked stranger. Do you have Fen’Harel’s permission?
Hello, marked stranger. Fen’Harel has given you the ability to enter.
Nuvenas mana helanin, dirth bellasa ma.
Unless you desire to fight indefinitely, say many permission you
Unless you desire a lengthy struggle, say the passphrase
I am half convinced this exchange is an inside joke of a log in process, asking for your username and password. It would be a very BioWare thing to do.
Ar-melana dirthavaren, Revas vir-anaris. (I + time + speak disappeared/promise, Freedom + path + countless years)
I promise my years, for the freedom of countless years ahead
I promise my years, for a path to freedom in the countless years ahead.
With this one, I’ve seen speculation that anaris would refer to one of the Forgotten Ones (Anaris), but, that doesn’t make much sense to me in context. It’s also not a capitalized word. So, I went with the assumption that anaris is an alternative spelling of annaris.
Based on how the other lines shaped up, the ending lines that made most sense to me were:
Amae lethalas.
Protect the people.
Virthar ma. Na din’an sahlin!
Have it your way. Die here and now.
And here’s how it looks in context with my final translations:
“Peace, marked stranger. Fen’Harel has given you permission to enter,” the leader speaks.   “Wait”, Lavellan says. “Is this... necromancy, Dorian?” “Not quite. It would seem the elves bound a spirit here. It feels… old. Very old.” “What does it want?” Lavellan asks. The spirit looks at her. “Unless you desire a lengthy struggle, say the passphrase.” “That’s elvhen, right?” Sera huffs. “Do your pool whisper thing, yeah?” “You... understand what he said?” I ask Lavellan. “Sort of. I never learnt fluent elvhen... but I can sort of feel the meaning, through the Well of Sorrows,” she says, taking another step. “And I think I know which words to say.” Lavellan looks back at us, but her eyes seem distant. She clears her throat. “I promise my years, for a path to freedom in the countless years ahead,” she says, but her voice sounds distorted, as if someone else was speaking the words along with her. “Protect the people,” the spirit replies, bowing his head, stepping aside. “Protect the people,” Lavellan agrees, as she walks past him and his archers.
In conclusion: the author is dead, go wild
We went through the process!
Now, are these correct translations? No. Probably not. Maybe. Could be. But, more importantly, if they fit and don’t seem wildly out of place, who cares?
The purpose of my translations here isn’t to theory craft for DA4, or go on a deep dive into lore. The purpose isn’t to reveal new nooks of canon to prove my Fan Cred™️ to my readers. No.
They serve their one purpose, which is to support the story I want to tell with my fanfic. For instance, my translation of the secret greeting of the agents of Fen’Harel contains a promise, a pledge. That’s not necessarily correct, but for how this scene appears in Coiling Time, it’s crucial, since it makes this scene a source of information about the willingness of the elvhen to give up their immortality — their years — for the cause — freedom in the countless years ahead. It also makes for a plot point further ahead; Malika really does not want to repeat this phrase, since promises uttered by her are binding.
Similarly, I went with 'Protect the people’ for Amae lethalas, instead of Protect our kind, or Protect our family, which may be slightly more in line with canon — but that would fit the story poorly, so I threw that out. I didn’t want to put the reader on the path of considering Fen’Harel’s bloodline, for instance. All in all, I’m alright with what I came up with; it’s not perfect, but, hopefully, it gets that it needs done.
Another I wanted to be careful with was the tone of the English translation here; is it formal, is it familial. For the guard, I went with a bit of a robotic delivery, since in the way I imagine Coiling Time, the pre-Fade spirits — such as the Archivist — operate similarly to VI in Mass Effect.
Anyway, since I went through the trouble of doing this, I wanted to share some phrases:
Atish’all vallem, Fen’Harel elathadra. Peace, marked stranger. Fen’Harel has given you permission to enter.
Nuvenas mana helanin, dirth bellasa ma. Unless you desire a lengthy struggle, say the passphrase.
Ar-melana dirthavaren, Revas vir-anaris. I promise my years, for a path to Freedom in the countless years ahead
Amae lethalas. Protect the people
Virthar ma. Na din’an sahlin! Have it your way. Die here and now.
And for a bonus, a Librarian line as well:
Delltash! Seran Viar Malas Shivera Mellavar! Keep quiet! Return the loans that are long overdue!
I hope you find this useful. Again, the goal here isn’t to find the ultimate translation, but to lead the reader onto your path.

Life, Gaming, Fannish goodness & Cyberpunk 2077 anticipation thoughts:
@fereldanwench (one particular bit of good news may be of interest to you)
The days are starting to edge toward autumn and evening starting ever earlier, so outdoor exercise soon needs to move to the normal midday hours rather than late in the evening after dinner. Because after dinner is now either deep twilight or DARKNESS depending on how late dinner is.
And that means returning to evening gaming and watching things on TV too pretty soon!
I have So Many Unfinished Games that want my attention but the list of additional games that have caught my interest (thank you mutuals ;) has grown over recent years too.
Given the state of the world, I am not one to complain about the gaming gear I own — quite a lot actually bc I’ve kept and collected since the late 90s and I baby my electronics, new and vintage — but my systems no longer meet the requirements of modern AAA gaming.
But(!) I now have a modern-enough gaming machine on order that will supposedly arrive in early October(big improvement from the wait time of sometime in late Nov to mid Dec, which was what I saw just last week when shopping around for systems that more or less met my specs etc etc). So, Yay! And it should also run graphics programs (photoshop etc) blazingly fast too so that’s also a big win.
Thus (drum roll) — My Cyberpunk 2077 escapism will hopefully begin in Oct!
Still no luck on a PS5 but… shrug… someday that luck will win out. Having a windows based gaming machine that is of 2021 specs opens up a lot of goodness for the upcoming months of the Long Dark, especially since I am stuck for a second winter in a row in the US (thank you covid). Sure, there is ONE game that I very much want that is PS5 only but … I’m okay. Maybe by the time I finally get a PS5 they will have made a fancier model of it? Shrug.
The new gaming computer-on-order is entirely a mental health purchase.
Fwiw, some years back, long meanders in Dragon Age Inquisition’s sunny environments got me through a winter trapped in the Long Dark. I might need to revisit something of that style — if not DAI itself during the worst of winter.
Additionally, I have very recently gotten back into coding as a hobby (long long long after software dev as a 9-6 career or graphics & human computer interaction applied to Serious Things as an academic job). Except I am already thinking of actual software I might want to design so… it may stop being a true hobby if it becomes a side-hustle.
Remembering how relaxing and flow-state inducing programming can be — which it was when I was a tween and a teen, killing long evenings in my room “playing” (rather than grinding) at programming projects purely for fun. (Or gaming, ahaha, because some things never change.)
So….. given that (a) america, with all of its resources in medicine, is dragging its fucking heels at ending its own pandemic and literally tossing vaccines in the garbage while other nations are in need of vaccines and have ppl who desperately want the jabx2 (which raised my blood pressure just typing that); (b) politics have become so depressing and so regressive and so corrupt that I just need to step back (quit) after a couple of decades of on the ground organizing— honestly I cannot even read the news without wanting to scream and my partner of 2 decades is now incapable of discussing political-related things at any level; (c) at least until next summer (and just like life for the past 18 months), my entire physical world has pretty much shrunk to most of my time being in my house or being outside in my walkable urbanish hood, (d) I need a hobby that is actually just a hobby — one that cannot be side-hustled into a non-hobby, AND YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS: Fandom goodness.
Mmmmmmm.
Thinking about messing around with tumblr themes and fannish graphics.
Will definitely get back to fanfic writing v soon.
Will almost certainly rearrange my main blog (this one) and my side blogs.
Will also get back to that much threatened Dirgepalooza- ahahahaahah- bc ffvii is my original fandom.
Might finally start making fanart after threatening to do so for years?
