#Eddie's breakdown season 5
Video
Eddie’s breakdown-deleted scene included
The “deleted” scene from Eddie’s breakdown that was included in Fox’s “We are family” season 5 recap video, which aired in September 2022, but wasn’t included in 5x13 “Fear-O-Phobia”, has been added and edited into the above video. Since the deleted portion starts when Eddie first looks up at Buck, it was added and edited into the section that begins after Buck said, “Eddie, hey, hey...what’s going on? Hey!” and before Eddie says, “They’re all dead!” because it seems like that’s where it might have been if the show hadn’t DELETED the majority of Eddie’s scene.
It’s interesting that all of Eddie’s breakdown scene wasn’t aired even though there was plenty of time for two boring emergencies to be included, i.e., the sharks and the spiders which took up more than 14 minutes of the episode (each emergency was more than 7 minutes long).  Also there were three unnecessary Buck and TayKay scenes that took up more than 9 minutes of the episode (each of their scenes were more than 3 minutes long).  If both emergencies and the BT scenes would have been shortened, instead of them taking up almost 25 minutes (which is more than half) of the 43-minute episode, there would have been plenty of time for all of Eddie’s breakdown to be included instead of the 5-minute scene that was shoved in at the end of the episode.
EDDIE DESERVES BETTER than the cropped and shortened scenes he’s always given.  Hopefully this will be remedied in 6B but with the way he was sidelined for a lot of 6A, it’s unlikely.

But you'll fight and you'll make it through
You'll fake it if you have to
And you'll show up for work with a smile
And you'll be better and you'll be smarter
And more grown up and a better daughter
Or son, and a real good friend

buck really said 'she sees me' after 6x12. 'she sees me' after he showed up to eddie's to escape the rotating cast of visitors. 'she sees me' after maddie probably tried to enlist eddie too because he knew buck was getting all those visitors that wore him out but he happened not to be one of them. 'she sees me' after you died, buck. you're going to feel a lot of different ways about that. sometimes all at the same time.
'she sees me. y'know like she really sees me for who i am and what i've been through. i think she might see even more in me than i see in myself.' after eddie sees him for exactly who he is, after he expects buck not to be anything for anybdy else's sake.
like, okay.

I've been racking my brain trying to figure what is it about season 6 Eddie and i think it's because he lost the military stance. He looks I guess softer? Less tense? He moves less like a military person? I don't know how to explain but i think it makes sense.

Evan “Buck” Buckley:  Life Lessons Learned
July 2–9, 2022:  Getting to know Buck & Eddie week
Tumblr media
This post includes a detailed character study and scene analyses for seasons 1-5 to illustrate how there were life lessons included in each season for Buck to learn.
Every season Buck has either spoken with someone he already knew or met someone who taught him a life lesson.  While he learned some lessons rather quickly, there were other times when it took him several months or a couple of years to learn them.  The journeys he took to learn those life lessons were always shown and the finality of how he applied them to his everyday life were shown as well. Let’s review the lessons as they were presented in CANON.
Season 1
Tumblr media
Buck spent a long time searching for someone who wouldn’t leave him.  He slept around a lot and he even got fired for stealing the firetruck to have sex with a woman on a rooftop.  Bobby rehired him but it wasn’t until he entered a relationship that Bobby started teaching him the proper way to treat the person he was dating.  Bobby taught Buck how to “step in” to a relationship and how to be there for that person.  Bobby told him, “It’s not uncommon for a guy to use quick, meaningless sex to avoid real intimacy”.  He also told him that having feelings of “closeness, intimacy and trust” in a relationship was good thing.
The lesson for Buck was simple.  He learned how to be there and how to “step in” to assist the person he was in a relationship with.
Season 2
Tumblr media
In 2x8 “Bucktually”, Buck met Thomas during a call and Thomas told him all about the life that he and his partner Mitchell had lived.  Thomas said, “We only wanted to go together” and Buck replied, “I hope that I can find something that good one day”.  That’s when Thomas replied, “You don’t find it son, you make it”. He was explaining the lessons about love and how two people can make it together.  It didn’t have to be a difficult process because if the two people in a relationship worked together, they could make something special.  Read blog post: “Buck & Eddie: Buck Misunderstood the Assignment” for information about Thomas and Buck’s conversation regarding love.
Buck learned two life lessons from Thomas: (1) he learned about true love and (2) he learned that it was ok for him to be in love with whomever he chose.
Season 3
Tumblr media
In 2x18 “This Life We Choose” after Buck’s leg was crushed by the ladder truck, Maddie was talking to him about his leg healing properly along with the things the doctors told him about having another surgery.  She told him, “So the doctor does want you to wait. You should listen to him. Ok, we’re talking about your health, your ability to walk. We’re talking about the rest of your life” and Buck responded, “Being a firefighter is my life. It’s the only thing that I’ve ever done that was important and that mattered. Ok? Without that I don’t have…”.  Then Maddie said, “You will still be Buck. Ok and we will all love you. There are lots of other important things you can do with your life”.  Buck said, “No. I’ve already made my choice”.
Buck said it back then that ‘being a firefighter was his life’ and he continued to fight so that he could go back to work, even after his embolism in 3x1 “Kids Today”. He filed a lawsuit against Bobby and the LAFD so that he could go back to work.  He returned to work in 3x6 “Monsters” but his job was still very important to him. He wouldn’t learn the life lesson regarding how one should ‘work to live and not live to work’ until several months later.
Tumblr media
In 3x16 “The One That Got Away”, Buck met John “Red” Delacroix after he and the 118 completed a successful rescue of Gladys from a burning apartment building.  When they returned to the firehouse, Buck wanted to go out and celebrate but everyone else had plans so he went to a bar alone and that’s where he met Red who was a retired firefighter.  They had drinks and talked a lot about firefighting and the fact that Red didn’t have any children.  At the end of the night Buck walked Red home and when they arrived, Buck went inside with him to make sure Red got in safely and that’s when he saw a group picture of Red’s firehouse “The 134” from 1983.  Then Buck saw another picture of Red and a woman who Red had dated years ago.  Buck asked him what happened to her and Red told him he thought he had time to start a life and a family but the job always came first.  Red asked Buck, “You got anybody kid?” and Buck responded, “Me? Ah, no. I did once but uh”.  Then Red said, “Listen to me. You can be the hero, save lives but don’t neglect having your own. The last thing you want is to be at the end, holding nothing but regrets. Trust me. I know”.
The life lesson Buck learned from spending time with Red was for him to not allow his job as a firefighter to become his whole life.
Season 4
Tumblr media
Buck learned a family secret about his birth in 4x4 “9-1-1 What’s Your Grievance?” that had been kept from him his whole life.  While his parents were visiting L.A., he learned the reason why he was conceived and born.  It was so that he could be a savior baby for his brother Daniel who had leukemia.  The issue was his whole family kept the reason for his birth a secret from him and that’s why his parents were never there for him emotionally.  Maddie said they were still grieving in 4x5 “Buck Begins” but Buck couldn’t understand why no one ever told him about the things that happened.
Tumblr media
He started to doubt himself and his reason for existing after he narrowly escaped a warehouse fire.  He was trying to save a victim but the 118 had to come in to save him so that the victim could be rescued.  After he was outside and Bobby told Athena that Buck saved the last victim, she said the person he saved was probably glad that he was being Buck.  Buck told her that he didn’t know what being Buck meant. She told him, “You never give up. That’s what being Buck means to me.  But whatever you do, don’t stop!”
Tumblr media
After Eddie was shot and the hospital was preparing to discharge him in 4x14 “Survivors”, he told Buck about the changes he made to his will that included him naming Buck as Christopher’s legal guardian.  Buck asked him why it took him more than a year to finally tell him about it and Eddie said, “Because, Evan. You act like you’re expendable, but you’re wrong.”  Eddie wanted Buck to understand that he was valuable and that he didn’t have to sacrifice himself. Read blog post: “Buck & Eddie: The Will & Legal Guardianship” for more information about Eddie’s will.
The life lesson Buck learned was that it was ok for him to just be himself. He didn’t have to be anyone else for him to feel valued.
Season 5
Tumblr media
Buck has feared being abandoned since he was young and that was due to the way his parents treated him.  As an adult, it was something he still struggled with especially after the people he had been in relationships with abandoned him.  Maddie told him he needed to get back out there and that he was lonely in 3x16 “The One That Got Away”; then he told her, “I mean, no offense but you’re never the one getting left behind. You’re the one who leaves”.   He went on to explain how she had left him but he wasn’t blaming her with regards to the situation she had with Doug.
Tumblr media
Season 5 revolved around Buck feeling like his family had abandoned him which caused him to cling to the person he was dating.  Maddie left because of her PPD, Chimney took Jee-Yun and left to follow her and then Eddie quit the 118. Buck blamed himself for Chimney leaving and he told the 118 that “Nothing is the same without him. Everything feels broken now and it’s my fault” Cap told him he wasn’t going anywhere and after everyone else told him they spoke to Chimney before he left, Buck felt a little bit better.
Tumblr media
He continued to cling to a relationship that wasn’t working for him until 5x18 “Starting Over” when he made the decision to break up with her after she broke a promise that she made to him in 5x17 “Hero Complex”.  After having been the one who was always left behind in his previous relationships, Buck finally made the decision to be ok with being single.  He exhaled after she left his loft.
The life lesson Buck learned after he experienced a life filled with abandonment was that it’s ok to be the one to end a relationship when things aren’t working.
Buck has learned several lessons over the years and it all started with the relationship lessons Bobby taught him in season 1.  He learned how to step in with the person he was interested in so that he could be there for them.  He did that with Eddie in 2x4 “Stuck” when he contacted Bobby about Eddie’s childcare issues and when he contacted Carla to help Eddie get permanent childcare for Christopher.  Thomas taught Buck about love and how it was ok for him to love the person he would choose to be with because there was no preset ideology for him to follow. One of Buck’s fears has always revolved around him feeling and being alone. He left his parents’ house in 2012 and he traveled the Americas in the jeep Maddie gave him.  When he finally ended up in L.A., he joined the fire academy and became a firefighter with the 118.  Being a firefighter had become his life because according to him, it was the only thing that made him feel important.  Therefore, Red taught Buck that his job shouldn’t be the only thing he lived for and that he should save lives but also build the life he wanted for himself in the process.  After learning the reason for his birth, Buck started questioning his self-worth and that’s when both Athena and Eddie stepped in to remind him of some things.   Athena told him that being Buck meant he never stops and Eddie helped him to understand that his life was valuable. Finally he learned that he didn’t have to stick it out in a relationship hoping that things would in his words, “magically work themselves out” or that they eventually would get better. Buck learned he doesn’t always have to be the one left behind because he can decide to be the one who leaves.
What life lesson will Buck learn during season 6? Only TPTB know the answer to that question.

Just thinking about the way the Buckley-Diaz family has evolved and grown as the seasons have progressed and getting really emotional, don't mind me.
Season 2 you have Buck helping Eddie get the support he needs, but he isn't that involved yet. Buck insists on going to Eddie's shield ceremony even though he's got a cast up his thigh. They're friends, they're close, but they haven't quite made the leap to family yet.
Season 3 you get that leap. You have Buck helping with the accessible skateboard. You've got Buck planning a little party so all of the firefam can see their families on Christmas, but especially so Christopher can see Eddie. And that's not even mentioning the 'there's nobody in this world I trust with my son more than you'. This is the season their family was born and it was forged in fire and a tsunami and a lawsuit and forgiveness.
Season 4 gives us Chris running to Buck when he's mad at his dad and Buck really acting like a co-parent and not a fun uncle (which is kind of what he acted like at the start of season 3). It gives us the fucking will and Eddie showing and telling Buck how important he is to him and to his family. It gives us Buck telling Chris his dad was shot and Chris comforting Buck as he sobbed. It gives you no room to argue that those three are a family.
Season 5 takes it up another level. You have Eddie ending a relationship with a lovely woman because Buck called him on his bullshit. We get the hostage situation and Buck losing his cool when Christopher is threatened. And then Eddie leaving the 118 and Buck worrying about him because he seems off. It gives us Eddie learning to cooking Buck loving the food even though he warned Taylor to eat before.
You get Eddie's breakdown and Christopher calling Buck because he's his other adult. He's the person he trusts with himself and his dad. Then you get Buck caring for the Diaz boys - taking Chris to school, making sure Eddie isn't alone, helping Chris with his homework. And then finally you get Buck helping Eddie patch his walls, because he's the guy Eddie trusts to help him when he's at his lowest, to see him at his lowest.
(And you get Buck over at the Diaz house playing with Chris's dinosaurs while Eddie packs in one of the most domestic little scenes and I love it so much.)
Season 6 gives us family dinner at Buck's loft. It starts with Chris teasing Buck about his couch, with Eddie and Chris playing a game in the kitchen while Buck cooks. When Buck gets struck by lightening Chris demands to see him. When Buck wakes up the only place he can really fall asleep is at the Diaz house.
And you get the poker night scene, which feels like a parent's night out/date night. They still feel like a team even if things are different after the lightening.
Even though season 6 ended with both Buck and Eddie attempting to start other relationships, it's clearly established throughout not just season 6, but the entire show that they're a family, no matter what.
And we know season 7 is starting with Buck parenting Chris at Eddie's request. With Buck and Eddie teaming up to help Chris with his first crush. Another incidence of them being a family, of them functioning like a family unit.
No matter what happens with Buddie, the Buckley-Diaz family is just that - a family. There's no other way to look at it. Those three love each other. They support each other. They're a family even if Buddie is never explicitly romantic.

Buck (and Eddie) mini meta - 7x10 (probably but could also be 7x09!)
I was going to make a quick post about this new shirt we have bts pictures of Buck and Eddie wearing - but well, I spiralled and it turned into this!! (under the cut to save your dash!)
So let's do Eddie first shall we!!
there are actually two shirts we've got bts of Eddie wearing which have me 👀👀👀
first up is this green number we have bts of him wearing at the firehouse (not 100% sure if this is an actual costume or just Ryan's clothes but I'm fairly sure it's an Eddie outfit!)
Tumblr media
Why am I side eyeing so hard at this do you ask? well its a very similar shirt to the one we have seen him in before - in 5x13 when he has his break down. Its not the same, but similar - no cut off sleeves, but its the same army green.
Tumblr media
We see this tee at he culmination of Eddie isolating himself from the fire fam (especially Buck) through the start of 5b and then blowing up his life in 5x13 - when he trashes his room and Chris calls Buck.
I think we're about to see something similar play out in the last couple of episodes of season 7 - Eddie increasingly choosing to isolate himself from the fire fam (especially Buck) as he spirals out with this vertigo arc. Ryan has said in interviews that Eddie will be isolated by the end of the season, this costume therefore parallels Eddies arc of 5b - especially if we include the use of white on Eddie as well (and Buck in Blue in the same scene!). Eddie does something drastic and then pretends everything is ok - before proceeding to spiral out and blow up his life in some way.
5x11 - we have the aftermath of Eddie leaving he 118 - dinner with Buck and Taylor when he and Buck have a mini disagreement about Eddie coming back to work - which is preceeded by us being shown how Eddie is not actually ok - leading in to 5x13 when Eddie has his breakdown whilst wearing an army green tee and Buck breaks down the door to get to him and literally steps in to the mess, bringing the 118 into help as well (represented by Bobby being there when Eddie wakes up).
Tumblr media
Then we have season 7 - the aftermath of Eddie asking Marisol to move in with him and then it is made clear that Eddie has moved too fast, that he doesn't actually know Marisol, or ultimately feel comfortable with the relationship - and now we've watched him (still in white in the scene where he sees Kim) spiralling out and heading towards isolating himself in the same way he did in season 5. The use of a similar army green tee in 7x10 suggests that we're going to see something similar unfold as things come to a head in the vertigo arc. Im especially intrigued because Buck it seems is going to be in uniform for the scene (which side note plays into the Buck and Eddie blue green colour palette they've been using and in a reverse of the gym scene from 7x05!) we don't know where in the episode this scene falls, but my guess would be that its actually a scene from earlier in the episode - allowing for the blow up to happen and the fall out begin. (I also think this because of Helena and Ramon appearing - which I think will be later in the episode and in response to Kim's existence being more widely known about, but thats just me speculating!)
Tumblr media
We do also have the t-shirt from 7x01 - which is not the same as the other two - its darker and more brownish than the two above, but it does play into a similar narrative - Eddie finding out about Chris and his multiple girlfriends and Buck stepping in (at Eddies request this time) to help and support the Diaz boys!
Tumblr media
Eddie outfit two!
Then we have this outfit - which is contrary to popular belief, not the will reveal outfit, but actually the Ana as Eddies girlfriend reveal to Chris outfit.
Tumblr media
The two outfits are very similar, but the will reveal outfit is a navy blue shirt (which is important as it plays into both blue/green and blue/yellow theory - which gains even more significance now we know that it is likely this was meant to be the beginning of at the very least a queer narrative for Buck and the implication is that it would've been the beginning of buddie canon) this shirt and the Ana reveal shirt are both black and have silver eyelets on the shirt opening
Tumblr media
For me, the fact that it is the same outfit as that reveal rather than the will reveal is suggestive that this outfit is in some way going to be connected to the reveal of Kim. In the same way that the Ana reveal outfit is connected to two scenes
- Eddie telling Chris and the salad bowl getting smashed,
- Eddie realising Chris has gone missing only to find out he's run to Buck's
I feel like this one is also likely to be connected to two scenes - what they are and where this hospital scene fits within the wider episode, it is hard to fully form ideas on the full meaning behind the fact that he is wearing the same outfit. Because does this scene come before or after the arrival of Helena and Ramon, what is the connection to Bobby being in the hospital and Eddie wearing this outfit? My personal opiion is that this outfit is going to be involved in people finding out about Kim.
As an addition to this, we should also talk about the fact that Eddie always wears black in relation to key scenes with Marisol and Kim and it continues a trend of Eddie wearing black in key scenes in relation to his relationships.
When Eddie and Marisol meet at the hardware store he is in black, when asking her to move back out, black shirt. Then with Kim -both scenes with her when he talks to her he is in black - black shirt in the store and a black jacket when they go on their date.
He was also wearing Black in key moments with Shannon (divorce request scene as well as in flashbacks) and with Ana ( first meeting and panic attack scenes). I've spoken before about the choice to put him in a black singlet when he's in an emotionally vulnerable place, but with these additional scenes in mind, as well as the fact that we see him wearing black in the hospital during Bucks coma, as well as the fact we also get a similar shirt on Eddie back in 7x01.
Tumblr media
I think its fair to associate black more generally with Eddie being in a vulnerable place emotionally - the singlets are just worn at points when those vulnerable moments are about to tip Eddie into something stupid and this makes the use of the singlet in 7x04 for the basketball game even more interesting as it places Eddie into emotional vulnerability around Bucks bi journey and less about Bucks own emotional vulnerability - plays a little into the idea that they were going to have Eddies queer journey come before Bucks!
From a purely speculative position - my feeling is that this outfit comes after the arrival of Helena and Ramon and possibly towards the end of the episode.
The fact Eddie is wearing it at the hospital is possibly important, but I get the feeling it will be an outfit with more than one key scene attached to it (much like Eddie being in a black shirt when Buck came out to him was in two key scenes - Bucks coming out and Eddie asking Marisol to move out).
In the same way that in season 4 the Ana reveal was paired with a scene where Chris runs to Buck my feeling is that we're going to see something similar in season 7 with this - further adding to the parallels between the two seasons (see this excellent post by @iinryer for more on those!).
Part of my thinking comes from the fact we had this other bts of Buck, Eddie, Chris and Helena and Ramon. So we know that Eddie will be wearing a maroon henley for a scene in this episode.
I've spoken about Eddie wearing maroon long sleeved tops in relation to things being about Chris and Eddie parenting, and this one is likely to follow that theme, especially with Chis seemingly wearing the same outfit he was wearing when the fact he had multiple girlfriends was revealed.
The fact that buck is in a reverse outfit to the one from his discussion with Chris after that reveal (navy blue bottoms and yellow ochre top v yellow ochre bottoms and navy blue top), suggests to me that the are trying to do a couple of things here - they are flipping the scene - so it is still about a multiple girlfriends reveal, just Eddies rather than Christophers. It is also possibly a way to contrast the fact they set up Buck as sitting in parallel to Shannon (from both a costuming and directorial perspective), now they are reversing it and setting them in juxtaposition with one another - playing on the concept of one being alive while the other is dead and contrasting the actual reality of Eddies life with Eddies rose tinted version of things - the version he's trying to recreate with a doppelgänger.
Tumblr media
Onto Buck
The shirt that changes colour depending on which picture you look at - is it brown and cream or dark greyish brown and blue/grey?!!
My personal feeling is that it will look more brown and cream on camera, but that we might see a little bit of the blue pinstripe come through! This means we need to not only look at Buck in pinstripes, but also when he has worn brown!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So lets look at when we've seen Buck wear brown!
We have 2x05 - a scene where Maddie is ranting about Gloria calling her constantly. In this scene Buck is in a brown marl tee (you'll have to take my word for it - I ran out of pictures and this one was the least important!), personally I don't think it fits into the narrative as it is a tee rather than a shirt or jacket, so I'm not including it in my wider anaylsis!
We get Brown sports jacket Buck - in 3x04 when he delivers the results of the 118's assessment and discovers Lena filing his space - Buck gets jealous and a little mad. (had to include the still where Edie is checking out Bucks ass because it will never not be funny and now has the added layers to it`!)
Tumblr media
one episode later and we get more brown in the divorced buddie era 1.0 supermarket arguement of 3x05.
Tumblr media
Things go quiet on the brown front for Buck until 4x14 and the 'it would've been better if it had been me who got shot' scene - this is is a borderline brown - it sits in the yellow ochre spectrum, but is closer to brown than yellow! This, like the last tine he wore brown, comes in the aftermath of Buck doing something stupid (climbing the crane)
Tumblr media
Then Buck doesn't wear any brown in season 5, so its on to season 6 where we have 6x04 and this russet brown (which is a reddish brown) which Buck wears when Connor pays him a visit regarding the sperm donation.
Tumblr media
Then later in the same season - 6x18 - we have the most recent Buck in brown sighting - when he is talking to Connor once more about Kameron being at his loft. with the added bonus of this being veritcally ribbed making it look like stripes!
Tumblr media
As you can see we only see Buck wear brown in very specific moments and they tend to come in pairs - we get bright russety browns in the build up to Buck doing something stupid followed by a darker more muddy brown in the aftermath (in both s2 and s6). Only the one from season 4 doesn't fit the pattern as it doesn't have a pair.
But while events in seasons 3 and six are essentially of Bucks making - he sets things in motion - season 4 is not - Buck is not the instigator, he is a bystander dropped into the middle of something, if anything the fact his brown has yellowish undertones plays into its having a reverse effect - that it is the same as the russet browns - setting something in motion, but its pair is the brighter yellow ochre shirt from the will reveal - which sits in opposition to the darker browns - its not something Buck needs or wants to try and fix - its more of an affirmation of Bucks belonging and not something he needs to fight for.
I've spoken before in various meta's about brown being a colour of stability support and protection. it is also a colour of wisdom and counsel - and I think all of these will come into play with this new shirt in some capacity, because to put Buck in brown at this point is definitely a choice with intention behind it.
Now onto Buck in vertical stripes!
We'll do the light ones first. It's still insane to me that the first time we ever see Buck in vertical stripes is the shooting scene in 4x13.
Tumblr media
Then ten episodes later, in 5x13 we see the next white striped shirt and its when Taylor is moving into the loft. These are the only two we have in a white and black/grey colour way.
Tumblr media
The next time we see light stripes is in 6x01 - only now they are cream and blue rather than white and black/grey - when Buck moves his armchair and decides he doesn't need a couch .
Tumblr media
Followed by 6x08 when Buck is in Uncle Buck mode and looking after Jee and being given the run around by her - again cream and blue.
Tumblr media
The last Buck in light shirts with stripes sighting is from 7x05 - when he meets with Tommy for coffee, this time its cream with black and red stripes.
Tumblr media
Then we have a couple of outliers - this light blue jacket from 6x01
Tumblr media
and this grey one from 6x09
Tumblr media
Then we have the dark ones!
This one from 4x14 when Taylor appears back on his doorstep after the shooting and kissing him
Tumblr media
This one from 5x09 - the most awkward 'I love you' scene in the history of mankind
Tumblr media
6x04 when he tells Conor and Kameron that he will be their sperm donor
Tumblr media
in 6x07 we get two - both when he is trying to donate sperm and not being successful in this endeavour
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in 6x17 we see him in this shirt when Maddie comes by for help with getting her stuck engagement ring off
Tumblr media
and finally we have Buck and Tommys first date - which ends in failure.
Tumblr media
and now we have a brown and cream/blue one joining the mix!
I've written before about Bucks vertically striped shirts - in various episode metas, as well as a separate post which is linked on my pinned post under Buck, But I'm going to talk about them again because he just keeps on wearing them at really interesting moments!
Buck seems to wear them at moments when he is essentially ‘imprisoned’ by something mentally - at moments when he either steps forwards or backwards in his self development, or stays in stasis - and which of these it is, is determined by the colour of the shirt and the stripes. The lighter ones are connected to moving forward and ultimately escaping, while the darker ones are about Buck being trapped and moving in the wrong direction.
Starting with the white shirts - I know on the face of it, it isn't easy to see either of the white shirts with black pinstripes as Buck moving forward, but while the scenes they are worn in themselves may not seem to be freeing, the resulting actions - the will reveal for the first one and the second one reveals Bucks true thoughts on his and Taylors relationship and thus marks the beginning of the end, I mean obviously the kiss is the actual moment that marks the beginning of the end but this moment - when he is talking to Maddie, the audience is made aware that Buck really and truly isn't all in with Taylor and that he has imprisoned himself - his ability to recognise that - the fact he is able to verbalise that he is afraid of being left - that is the moment of growth and escape for him.
The unhappy moments, the moments when he is regressing or clinging are signified by the black shirts with white or silver pinstripes.
With Taylor the two scenes we get black shirts with pinstripes are connected to Buck being in trauma response mode - the first in the aftermath of the shooting - starting a relationship when he's in a super raw place - his best friend has been shot and he's looking after said best friends son and climbing cranes to try and protect the rest of his found family (also adding Maddie's impending PPD to this as well as the Daniel of it all although those are less central in this moment in time).
Then the second one comes in the 'I kinda love you for it' scene - and off the back of Buck feeling and fearing that he is being left - that Taylor is pulling away from him.
The three all connected to the sperm donation all play into the narrative that Buck hasn't thought the sperm donation through fully - that the universe is screaming at him and he's trapping himself in a prison - we do see some of that play out as the season progresses when he becomes embroiled in Conor and Kameron's marriage and pregnancy dramas when his part in it all should've been done.
The scene with the stuck ring is a scene very much about Maddie but Buck does drop himself in it on two fronts - the ring cutter and in letting Maddie know that Hen and Chim had an arguement over Chim proposing to Maddie.
Buck and Tommys first date - again a prison of Bucks own making - this shirt very much plays into the disastrous nature of the date - with Bucks 'I'm and Ally' and comment about going to 'find chicks'
Then we have the shirts that somewhere in the middle. - the blue one from 6x01 where we have a Buck doing some mental self torture trying to work out why he’s been passed over for the interim Captain job but finally figuring it out,
The three cream ones are all essentially the cure for the previous, darker stripes - they play into the idea that Buck is learning and growing - in a way he wasn't when it was just black and white shirts and stripes from seasons 4 and 5 when we got a white shirt followed soon after by a black shirt (4x13 - White - 4x14 - black) or vice versa (5x09 - black - 5x13 - white).
We have 6x01 with the blue then cream - Buck in a mental prison around what he wants in life, but choosing to embrace being on his own and seeing where life takes him by the end of the episode. 6x04 and 6x07's navy blues connected to the sperm donation arc followed by 6x08's cream and blue one of the very real children in his life - one who he gets to be an active part of watching grow up. 7x04's navy date shirt one followed by 7x05's cream, black and red shirt when Buck requests and is granted a do over with Tommy
So how is this brown and cream one going to fit in? Well that is the million $$$$ question isn't it! My feelings are that it's going to fit in with the pattern and have a reverse one to go with it. Now I have two theories - the first is that its actually the brown pair to the one from season 4 - that its going to connect into Buck's statement that it would've been better for Chris if he'd been the one hurt - and therefore connect into the will of it all, playing on the concept of Chris (and Buck) finding out about Kim - connecting Eddies outfit into the equation - and lead to Buck once again stepping up to look after or support Chris in some capacity (maybe we'll get a parallel of Chris running to Buck after finding out about Ana and have Chris running to Buck after finding out about Kim, who knows!).
The other option is that we'll only see the pair to this brown striped shirt later down the line - whether we see that before the end of the season or have to wait for the start of season 8 I do't know - it really depends on how they close out this season and the Buck and Eddie arcs.
I'd like to think the fact that its brown and therefore means stability, support, protection and wisdom, means that it will be connected to Buck discovering Eddies cheating and then stepping up to support him and Chris through the fall out (after perhaps taking a moment to consider things) and that it is tied into the season 4 parallels, but I guess we'll all have to wait and see!
Essentially all of Bucks striped and or brown tops have a pair and play on the idea of light and dark to varying degrees as well as the concept of being trapped or imprisoned by some form of traumatic event.
Hopefully this makes sense and that you've enjoyed reading this deep dive into Bucks stripes and Eddies wearing of black! I can't wait to hear your thoughts!

Okay I’ve had several days to think about it, and I’m not upset about Eddie’s cheating storyline anymore.
Nobody asked, but HERE’S why.
Eddie is an incredibly traumatized character. The military experiences (+ his dead friends), losing his wife so suddenly & without closure, and a couple near death experiences will do that to you! Add that to parents trying to take his child away ON TOP OF feeling like he needs to give Christopher a mother at any and all costs…? Maybe a little bit of Catholic guilt sprinkled in there too.
Season 5 was not my favorite for a myriad of reasons, but one thing I did like about it was Eddie’s complete mental breakdown. It felt like a long time coming... BUT. His mental breakdown didn’t even really scratch the surface of his issues, and there are still a lot of things he needs to face before he can truly be at peace. One of those things is Shannon.
The effect that Shannon’s loss had on Eddie has, in my opinion, never been explored properly. We got a little of it in season 3 with the illegal fighting, and then hints of it again when he was with Ana, but it never felt like closure to me. It felt like season 6 tried to give him closure (through Marisol), but it wasn’t satisfying because it was more or less a duller version of what happened with Ana. “Moving on” for his sake, but with no real emotional repercussions. Maybe this is just a personal opinion, but his story has felt like a ticking time bomb to me since the moment he broke up with Ana. His breakdown in s5 wasn’t the real bomb though.
Now imagine being Eddie, a guy with a lot of unresolved guilt and feelings for a woman who died right in front of him. Imagine you see a woman with that dead wife’s exact face. I can honestly say I have no fucking clue what I would do in his position. What he did- erasing Marisol in his first conversation with this lookalike Kim, then later lying to Buck to meet up with Kim- is morally not okay. Sure. Would any of us act in a rational way though?
I’m not meaning to justify cheating, but I do genuinely believe this is one of the only ways that stubborn ass was going to figure out his issues in a way that might actually help him move on. He’s being delusional with Kim, and once the ball drops, I believe there’s a great big breakdown waiting for him on the other end.
People often accuse Eddie of being the most boring of the 118, and I hate that assessment so goddamn much. Eddie is probably one of theee most complex characters (besides Buck) in the entire show. He’s self-destructive, kind, loyal, patient and impatient- he’s a good father and a good friend, and he’s FLAWED. That is why I love him so much.
My initial disappointment with him partially stems from me wanting him to have a singular season of PEACE, which…I realized wasn’t possible without blowing up the bomb first (would’ve preferred to disarm the bomb but I’ll take what I can get).

A helpful diagram for Tim minear and abc:
Tumblr media
Also you guys didn’t ask but what scenes would be in my dream buddie begins episode other than the cut scenes? (But would be impossible considering these guys change their hair and buff up between seasons so much they wouldn’t look anything like the season they’re meant to be from) :
1. Anything from the missing time between the ladder truck and buck recovering- I wanna see it so bad you don’t understand, buddie aside even, I just mourn it
2. First time buck went to Eddie’s house cos by the time we got the “it’s Eddie’s house I’m not really a guest” we hadn’t seen him really there
3. Again all the missing Buckley Diaz family scenes cos by the time we got to “his buck today” we hadn’t seen that that much
4. The conversation (cussing them out) Eddie had with the Buckley parents
5. Also where did buck go after he stormed out of that dinner because I’ve always suspected he went to Eddie’s
6. Any scenes from when Eddie got shot/ and after he woke up
7. More from Eddie’s breakdown era and buck helping him
8. EDDIES POV OF BUCK IN THE COMA- BRO COULDNT GO IN THE ROOM UNTIL CHRIS WAS THERE HE HAD TO TELL CHRIS THAT BUCK MAY NOT MAKE IT AND WE NEVER SAW THAT AND THATS A HATE CRIME AGAINST ME PERSONALLY
More but I gotta shut up now

A BREAKDOWN OF THE POTENTIAL S5 EPISODE TITLES!!
Okay, so today entertainment journalist Jeff Sneider shared some alleged insider info about S5 of ST, mainly directors and titles of the first 6 episodes.
Here’s a screenshot
Tumblr media
It’s important to keep in mind that this guy isn’t always the most reliable, and considering he also said he believes S5 could come out before the end of this year, let’s not take any of this too seriously. (Many cast members have mentioned they’re filming until December of this year so that’s literally impossible). The information about the possible directors I believe is correct, because it’s been circulating around from other sources too.
The episode titles I’m less convinced about because it’s also possible the Duffers could’ve put out fake episode titles in case they leaked. I remember for S2 all the episodes titles they announced were changed later on lol. But for the sake of fun, here’s an analysis of all of them:
1. The crawl (only confirmed title) is a very broad, open title. It personally makes me think of the UD and vines, or maybe even the idea of Vecna crawling back to life. Could also be an allusion to the military.
2. The Vanishing of ___ Wheeler is arguably the most insane one. The journalist said he wasn’t revealing the actual name of the person because it’s a spoiler ofc. My gut tells me it’s gonna be Holly, mainly because of the recast and her supposedly being involved in the hospital plot, which we have guessed takes place in episode 2. Could explain why she’s suddenly “more important” this season, especially if she’s used as a plot device of sorts. Could also tie into what Ted’s actor said in a podcast back in February about the first episodes being a rollercoaster of emotions, and that comment he made about Ted having a soft spot for Holly. It would be a perfect tie in for Karen to find out about the UD as well. The implications of naming the episode the same as the first episode, which is so intrinsically tied to Will, is very interesting. It’s also a new connection/tie between the Byers/Wheelers that I assume will bring the families closer together. I don’t think it’s about Mike because I doubt he’ll go missing in ep.2, or be dragged to the UD just like Will was. It would be an interesting concept but I doubt it. I also don’t think Nancy’s gonna go missing. Karen could be interesting but I doubt it as well. Ted would be an incredibly funny choice. Imagine he just goes missing while at the house 😭 Nonetheless, I think Holly is the clear choice here, and I do very much worry for her if she goes missing. Mainly because while Will survived this, I’m not sure they’ll do the same for Holly :(
It also ties into Vecna’s threat to Nancy against her and her family.
Here’s an interesting leak from the same anon that leaked the hospital stuff (which seems to be correct)
Tumblr media
I think this could be the very same scene Holly goes missing.
3. Turbow Trap 😭 This one is utter nonsense. I have no idea what a Turbow is, so I assume it’s gonna be a code or nickname for something. Absolutely clueless here.
4. Sorcerer is incredibly interesting, and imo a clear allusion to Will. His D&D character being a cleric, basically a wizard. Could also be a reference to Vecna imo. Or both 😉
5. Shock Jock is clearly tied to the radio station plotline. Imo the title could be a reference to Steve, Jonathan, or even Murray (he fits that eccentric, somewhat annoying personality quite well) In case you guys don’t know a shock jock is like a very eccentric radio host.
6. Escape from Camazotz is another crazy title. He’s a figure from Mayan mythology who’s a bat spirit. That immediately makes me think of Eddie, but also Steve ofc. However, camazotz has a larger meaning that goes beyond “bat spirit”, it’s also a representation of death and night. So the title seems to be alluding to someone escaping from death or a perilous situation.
Even more interesting perhaps is that kamazotz is a name of a planet in A Wrinkle Time. It’s the planet where IT resides, the mind controlling antagonist of the narrative. So I guess in this comparison Kamazotz is the UD, and IT is Henry.

You asked so let me lay out the mental gymnastics I have done to reach buddie roomates
1. Not a single bts of that loft. I feel like we were getting loft bts all the time last year (also there were like so many loft scenes last year too so that might be why)
2. Built the biggest most expensive rolling stage thing of all time. I believe either they have to build new sets this year or rent the sets from fox = bucks loft didnt make the cut (pure spec on my part watch oliver post bts of the loft today on his ig takeover)
3. “Giving the fans what theyre asking for” in terms of buddie what the fans have been asking for (at least that I see the most and think the writers would be aware of) is buddie canon, trapped dads (which was mostly just finale spec but I do think could happen in cruise disaster), buck breakdown/therapy, buckley diaz fam content, death to bucks loft/buddie roommates. And buddie roommates not only captures 2 of those but is also my fav of them so my mind went there
4. Buck and eddie closer than ever / knowing each other on a deeper level than before (Im paraphrasing bc I cant remember all 20 devastating ryan quotes rn): from personal experience, you can be very close with someone, but living with them is a whole new experience and you learn things about people you never knew before. One of the most intimate ways to get to know someone imo
5. Kind of like a said with a newish audience, 10 ep season that includes 2ep big emergency and madney wedding, and also the fact I feel the show has never explicitly hinted at buddie (I dont count the s2 stuff tim has said was fan service and 601/612 felt like it but thats it) I dont think full buddie canon is on the table this season. But a great way to explicitly hint that buddie canon is happening at some point would be roommates storyline
In conclusion: there will probably be 30 loft scenes this season and Im dumb but one can dream
everybody take a look at this ask and learn. this is the exact kind of deranged unserious reaching that we've been missing in this fandom lately. I love you and I applaud you anon 🫵
