Modern AU! for rdr2 characters
These are my headcannons for each character and what I think they would do in modern times.
Characters included: Arthur, Micah, Dutch, John, Abigail, Mary-Beth, Karen, Tilly, Sadie, Strauss, Charles, Susan, Bill, Lenny, Hosea, Sean, Molly, Javier, Swanson
_______________________________
Arthur Morgan:
He works a blue-collar job. He would most likely be a ranch hand, but for some reason, I can also imagine him being a plumber or welder. In his free time, he does art and sells prints on Etsy. He is still an old-fashioned gentleman (In a good way), and all of the ladies he meets swoon for him, but he is a himbo and doesn't realize they are practically in love with him. They will give him the most obvious hints, but he will think the women are just being nice.
Micah Bell:
He's the creepy uncle that you avoid at every family gathering. He hasn't had a job in like 15 years, and no one knows how he can still pay his bills. And he also always smells like lingering alcohol and cigarettes. He will lean too close to his nieces and say extremely concerning things everyone would choose to ignore. Im also getting the vibes that he went to prison for several years, but no one knows what for.
Dutch Van Der Linde:
He sells people scams or owns a pyramid scheme business. Similar to Scentsy products, he somehow convinces all of these people to buy his products to sell to other people, telling them they will get rich by selling these products, but, in reality, he's screwing them over and making most of the money himself.
John Marston:
If we are talking about early Red Dead 2 Marston, he still lives in his parent's basement and plays video games on his PC all day. He also watches Andrew Tate and would try to boss Abigail around and tell her he's an alpha male. (She'd slap him and tell him to get over himself) Late rdr2 and rdr1, he's grown out of that mindset and has become a working family man. Potentially also a welder, like I said for Arthur. But any high-paying physical job works.
I feel like Abigail, Mary-Beth, Karen, and Tilly would all have a mom group they host every week to discuss their child's newest achievements. Their husbands think that is all they do at the meetings, but they also have in-depth conversations about women's suffrage and how the world caters to men. They think of ways to better the world and bring more women together to discuss these topics and bring light to issues regarding women. The girls would run a pretty popular Facebook group where they let other women express their opinions on those topics. (Arthur is a part of the Facebook group and likes every post he sees and comments shit like, “You're doing great, ladies! Keep up the good work! 😁🥰👍”)
Sadie would probably occasionally attend these meetings (Although I dont see her having children, she would go for the cheap wine and to hang with her friends). Sadie would also go for the in-depth conversations and bring new thoughts to the table because she is a CEO or manager for a very successful company. She would share her experiences of what it's like to be on top of the men who work for her but still be looked down upon by them simply because of her gender. She would also probably share tips on that Facebook page on how to create a successful business without having to attend years of college and give tips for all stay-at-home moms who want to be more than just moms and wives. (She would also be the cool rich aunt)
Leopold Strauss:
He would do the same thing. He gives loans to people who he knows won't be able to pay back the money, and then when the bill comes, he'd ruin their lives and probably end up breaking up families/ relationships and send people to jail for not paying back the money in time.
Charles Smith:
I can see him being a park ranger or working in any conservation field. Potentially even a firefighter who deals with all of the forest fires that happen in places along the West Coast. He’d also be one to do something similar to what he did in the game, but he would work with the local native tribes against companies to try to win back their lands before it gets plowed over for an Amazon factory or something.
Susan Grimshaw:
I can see her being the mean substitute teacher who yells at everyone to get to work, and then when someone does something slightly wrong, she would yell at the whole class and be like, “In all of my years of teaching, I have never seen a class behave this badly.” Either that or she would work at the front desk of the business Sadie runs. Miss Grimshaw would NOT play with anyone who would try to be rude towards her.
Bill Williamson:
Ehem…a police officer. I feel like this one is self-explanatory. But he would mostly sit in his car and do nothing his entire shift. Occasionally pulling someone over for speeding. If they are a white dude, he'd would let them off with just a warning. Poor Lenny would probably get the ticket.
Lenny Summers:
I feel like he would be the one to graduate high school early and go to college as soon as possible. I dont know exactly what he would choose for his degree, but I feel like it would be something involving politics. Maybe that wouldn't be his major, but he would take a government class. Or Potentially going into journaling.
Hosea Matthews:
He's the retired grandpa who used to work in a factory where he made a surprising amount of money and was able to retire early. He spends most of his days walking up at 5 in the morning to watch the sunrise and read the morning paper. And he’ll spend every opportunity he gets to take his kids or grandkids fishing. And if you stay at his house overnight or for the weekend, he gives you a bowl of ice cream every night before bed and recounts every story he could think of that happened from the last time you saw him. (Some of them are surprisingly concerning, but he is one of those badass grandpas)
Sean Macguire:
Similar to John, Sean would spend most of his time gaming on his PC and arguing with children on COD or Fortnite. But he also works at a local bar as the bartender and won't hesitate to argue with the drunk assholes and would slap a bitch if needed. But he also embarrasses himself by flirting with women who will give him dirty looks or tell him that they are gay. (I feel like Karen would also work late-night shifts at the bar with him, but shes also taking online college classes because she wants to be a social worker)
Molly O’Shea:
Instagram and TikTok influencer 100%, and lots of brands like to sponsor her and send her free stuff (Mostly because of Dutch’s business.) and she posts videos of her and Dutch, and everyone in the comments freaks out about how he is grooming her because of their age difference but she denies it all and says that they are actually in love.  But then she would post a video to that one sound, “My god this reminds me of when we were young.” And Molly be like 8, and Dutch be in his mid-to-late 20s.
Javier Escuella:
He’d be a musician. He would have started out in a shitty garage band with Sean and John or something, but then he’d realize he actually wants to be a serious musician while the other guys were just messing around. So he’d leave and make solo music that blows up, and he ends up going on tour, and making a lot of money and becoming hugely successful.
Reverend Swanson:
The preacher you always see in the corner of the bar Sean works at. And if you went up to him and started talking to him, he’d tell you the most profound things. He would tell you about his life when he was younger and what happened that made him lose hope, but he would motivate you to never give up. He’d be that person you meet by chance for a few seconds that you would never forget. Hosea probably invites him to go fishing with him from time to time. But instead of fishing, Swanson stares at the water ripples in silence. Hosea would let him sit in silence and let Swanson enjoy the company and the time to think while being sober.

GhostSoap famous gambler husbands AU
Ghost who will clear an entire casino once, usually over the course of 3-4 days or up to a week, before leaving and never returning. Never goes to the same house twice. All house masters know of him. Well practically everyone knows of him, he's a legend at the top of the ranks, and if you meet him you only meet him once. And oddly enough he never seems to be far behind nation famous gambler Soap...
Soap who will clean out table after table of a few houses for weeks before he moves on. He rotates houses every few weeks, house masters know him well, he draws in many challengers, business booms for house masters. So he ends up winning just as much as he brings in (he has a public schedule on his socials (to the public Ghost is saop's bodyguard; dresses drastically different and with a different mask when gambling, as opposed to when he's with soap))
The Ghost is just as elusive as his name suggests. He has no socials, speaks to almost nobody except head of table and house master(s), and those he does speak to gets no more that a few words of unimportant forgettable information. While it's said that The Ghost never returns its a lie, he just doesn't return until after soap has started a new cycle of visits for the season. And he never makes himself known, caught only by wispers in the crowd until it reaches the house master.
Soap on the other hand has just about every social media platform you could think of (the big ones anyway) twitter, instagram, tumblr, reddit, ect. (No facebook but there is a page dedicated to him) He's active too. Keeps his location updated to that week's casino(s). Pictures of what he did that weekend, his current hyper fixation, what show or movie he's currently obsessed with. He shares gambling tips for people just starting, but nothing to give away his secrets. The public knows that he has a husband (it's kinda hard to miss the flashy gold ring when he tries to get it in every photo of him) but don't know who it is. They do know that he has a heart of gold and enthusiastically protects his wishes to remain anonymous. Sometimes even going as far as attacking newer fans who try to reveal that information, Soap has had to remind people to be nice to eachother.
It's honestly a scam, they laugh about it at night while in bed sometimes. They think it's a miracle that nobody's caught on yet, or if they have that they haven't leaked it.
Despite having so many riches they live a modest life. Sure it's more than most, a house, food, money to have a much fun as they could possibly want, and a sizable savings. But they do donate a good portion of their winnings, try to help people in need, don't spend on overly frivolous things (excluding their gambling attire because appearances matter in that kind of setting)
John and Simon Riley-Mactavish work in a small, locally known bar, The 1-4-1, co-owned by John Price and his adopted son Kyle Garrick, sat in the middle block of a chain of casinos. It's frequented by solem casino go-ers after a long night of misfortunes or celebrating parties of extreme luck.
Simon Riley-Mactavish works as The 1-4-1's seasoned bartender making drinks, taking orders, charming the excitable patrons eager enough to miss or ignore the silver band that sits politely on his finger. When he sees someone getting harrassed he's quick to ask on a napkin if they'd like an angel shot (with lemon for take them to the back, lime if they need an escort to their car/uber, or straight if it's an emergency and needs immediate intervention). He's also a petty bitch so if it's not an emergency he'll order the harasser the most disgusting drink he can make, on the house.
John Riley-Mactavish is security of The 1-4-1, it's honest work. He's great at de-escalating situations, corrallin the too roudy. He's who is called when an angel shot is ordered. Luckily it's not too often. Usually is using his charm to finesse and guide the too handsy and drunk out of the bar and on their way home. All that being said... he has no tolerance for disrespect and hate, and it's a damned good thing price doesn't mind a little chaos or he'd have been kicked out already. He's got a watchful eye, intentional misuse of pronouns in a malicious way, racist, misogynistic, or homophobic comments is an immediate out. And he's none too gentle when he does it. Aside from the not infrequent need to remove someone he does enjoy his job, most people are respectful, he finds good conversations, gets to hand out at the bar with Simon. Price lets his go where he wants as long as he does his job well, and he does.

RECENT SEO & MARKETING NEWS FOR ECOMMERCE, JULY 2024
Tumblr media
If you are new to my Tumblr, I usually do these summaries of SEO and marketing news once a month, picking out the pieces that are most likely to be useful to small and micro-businesses.
You can get notified of these updates plus my website blog posts via email: http://bit.ly/CindyLouWho2Blog or get all of the most timely updates plus exclusive content by supporting my Patreon: patreon.com/CindyLouWho2
TOP NEWS & ARTICLES
There is a relatively new way to file copyright claims against US residents, called The Copyright Claims Board (CCB). I wrote more here [post by me on Patreon]
After a few years of handwringing and false starts, Google is abandoning plans to block third-party cookies in Chrome. Both Safari and Firefox already block them.
When composing titles and text where other keywords are found, it can be useful to have a short checklist of the types of keywords you need, as this screenshot demonstrates. While that title is too long for most platforms and search engines, it covers really critical points that should get mentioned in the product description and keyword fields/tags as well:
The core keywords that describe the item
What the customer is looking to do - solve a problem? Find a gift? Feel better?
What makes the product stand out in its field - why buy this instead of something else? Differentiating your items is something that should come before you get to the listing stage, so the keywords should already be in your head.
Relevant keywords that will be used in long tail searches are always great add-ons.
What if anything about your item is trendy now? E.g., sustainability? Particular colours, styles or materials/ingredients are always important.
SEO: GOOGLE & OTHER SEARCH ENGINES
Google’s June spam update has finished rolling out. And here is the full list of Google news from June.
Expect a new Google core update “in the coming weeks” (as if we needed more Google excitement).
Google’s AI overviews continue to dwindle at the top of search results, now only appearing in 7% of searches.
Despite Google trying to target AI spam, many poorly-copied articles still outrank the originals in Google search results.
Internal links are important for Google SEO. While this article covers blogging in particular, most of the tips apply to any standalone website. Google also recently did a video [YouTube] on the same topic.
Google had a really excellent second quarter, mostly due to the cloud and AI.
Not Google
OpenAI is testing SearchGPT with a small number of subscribers. Alphabet shares dropped 3% after the announcement.
SOCIAL MEDIA - All Aspects, By Site
General
New social media alert: noplace is a new app billed as MySpace for Gen Z that also has some similarities with Twitter (e.g., text-based chats, with no photos or videos at this time). iOS only at the moment; no Android app or web page.
Thinking of trying out Bluesky? Here are some tips to get the most out of it.
Facebook (includes relevant general news from Meta)
Meta’s attempt at circumventing EU privacy regulations through paid subscriptions is illegal under the Digital Markets Act, according to the European Commission. “if the company cannot reach an agreement with regulators before March 2025, the Commission has the power to levy fines of up to 10 percent of the company’s global turnover.”
If you post Reels from a business page, you may be able to let Meta use AI to do A/B testing on the captions and other portions shown. I personally would not do this unless I could see what options they were choosing, since AI is often not as good as it thinks it is.
Apple’s 30% fee on in-app ad purchases for Facebook and Instagram has kicked in worldwide as of July 1.
Facebook is testing ads in the Notifications list on the app.
Meta is encouraging advertisers to connect their Google Analytics accounts to Meta Ads, claiming “integration could improve campaign performance, citing a 22% conversion increase.”
Instagram
The head of Instagram is still emphasizing that the number of DM shares per post is a huge ranking factor.
LinkedIn
Another article on the basics of setting up LinkedIn and getting found through it.
You can now advertise your LinkedIn newsletters on the platform.
Pinterest
Pinterest is slowly testing an AI program that edits the background of product photography without changing the product.
Is Pinterest dying? An investment research firm thinks so.
Reddit
If you want to see results from Reddit in your search engine results, Google is the only place that can happen now.
More than ever, Reddit is being touted as a way to be found (especially in Google search), but you do have to understand how the site works to be successful at it.
Snapchat
Snapchat+ now has 9 million paying users, and they are getting quite a few new personalization updates, and Snaps that last 50 seconds or less.
Threads
Threads has hit 175 million active users each month, up from 130 million in February.
TikTok
TikTok has made it easier to reuse your videos outside of the site without a watermark.
TikTok users can now select a custom thumbnail image for videos, either a frame from the clip itself, or a still image from elsewhere.
Twitter
You can opt out of Twitter using your posts as data for its AI, Grok.
YouTube
YouTube has new tools for Shorts, including one that makes your longer videos into Shorts.
Community Spaces are the latest YouTube test to try to get more fan involvement, while moving users away from video comments.
(CONTENT) MARKETING (includes blogging, emails, and strategies)
Start your content marketing plans for August now, including back-to-school themes and Alfred Hitchcock’s birthday on August 13.
ONLINE ADVERTISING (EXCEPT INDIVIDUAL SOCIAL MEDIA AND ECOMMERCE SITES)
Google Ads now have several new updates, including blocking misspellings.
Google’s new Merchant Center Next will soon be available for all users, if they haven’t already been invited. Supplemental feeds are now (or soon will be) allowed there.
STATS, DATA, TRACKING
Google Search Console users can now add their shipping and return info to Google search through the Console itself. This is useful for sites that do not pay for Google Ads or use Google’s free shopping ads.
BUSINESS & CONSUMER TRENDS, STATS & REPORTS; SOCIOLOGY & PSYCHOLOGY, CUSTOMER SERVICE
The second part of this Whiteboard Friday [video with transcript] discusses how consumer behaviour is changing during tight economic times. “People are still spending. They just want the most for their money. Also, the consideration phase is much more complex and longer.” The remainder of the piece discusses how to approach your target market during these times.
Prime Day was supposedly the best ever for Amazon, but they didn’t release any numbers. Adobe Analytics tracked US ecommerce sales on those days and provides some insight. “Buy-now, pay-later accounted for 7.6% of all orders, a 16.4% year-over-year increase.”
MISCELLANEOUS
You know how I always tell small business owners to have multiple revenue streams? Tech needs to have multiple providers and backups as well, as the recent CrowdStrike and Microsoft issues demonstrate.
If you used Google’s old URL shortener anywhere, those links will no longer redirect as of August 25 2024.

Hey, Which costume is your favorite, and are you going put more Recycled Costumes then two Costumes in Future on your site....
Plus: i still loves your Site😀💓
Tumblr media
My favorite costume or my favorite reused costume? The answer is different for both. My favorite reused costume can be found here, and my favorite costume ever...hard to say, but maybe this one?
As for how many costumes I will post per week, I am not sure. Eventually the plan is for an old costume to be posted Monday through Friday....recycled content, if you will. For those new to the site, this older content will essentially be new, unless you've been following us for years.
The plan for the weekend is at least one new costume for Saturday and Sunday. We will see if that changes, but remember this site is massive and even with help from contributors is a ton of work. I'd love to add more costumes per week, but we will see! Right now I am busy busy busy getting every current page in tip top shape with the best photos possible, fact checking, spell checking, adding tags, adding information, setting up nearly 20,000 social media posts in a queue, etc. Once all that is done I will reassess the frequency of new content.

Staff at a Norfolk farm shop and restaurant were stunned when a Hollywood star stopped by this week.
The team at Hirst's Farm Shop & Cafe, in Ormesby St Margaret, took to social media to share a snap of Marvel actor Tom Hiddleston as he posed for a photo.
Pictured with all smiles, the caption read: "Can you tell we have some Tom Hiddleston fans who work here?"
Speaking of the chance encounter, a staff member at Hirst's said: "It was great to meet him!
"He was very willing to have a selfie with our team and it gave them a huge morale boost to start their day seeing a celebrity enjoying their offering on a busy Saturday morning."
The Loki star was also spotted elsewhere in the Great Yarmouth area, dining at The Kings Arms in Fleggburgh last night which was shared on the business's Facebook page.
Afterwards, he reportedly said it was the "best meal" in Norfolk.
The appearance follows shortly after Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds was spotted filming the franchise's latest instalment at Holkham, a location not unused to hosting Hollywood productions.
Norwich regular Hugh Jackman was also in Norfolk recently, where he enjoyed a meal at the Waffle House in St Giles Street, similarly stopping to take a selfie with the team.
The actor's mother lives in the county and he is a diehard supporter of Norwich City, along with Stephen Fry and Delia Smith.
London-born Hiddleston, 42, won two Primetime Emmy Awards as star of TV series The Night Manager and has appeared in films outside of the Marvel universe including Kong: Skull Island and War Horse.
He has regularly been tipped as having the potential to be the next James Bond and his mother reportedly lives in Suffolk.

Hello. Do you have any tips on getting started selling your handmade goods? I am disabled too and sometimes the only thing keeping my sane is knitting. Right now I'm knitting things for myself and friends. I think I may get to a point where I want to sell things I have knit instead of just gifting them and I was curious how you go about doing it and if you have any tips for getting started.
I'm not like, wildly successful at this by any means, so if anyone else has any tips, omfg please share your wisdom.
That said, first of all fuuuuuuuuck etsy. Not only do they have shitty policies in a number of ways (you can google it if you want; i don't feel like getting into that series of rants), I never really made many sales there in the decade or so I tried. And tbh most of the knitted things up for sale there are so disgustingly underpriced, it might be hard to get enough money from a sale to even cover the materials cost, let alone labor time.
Once I had given up on etsy, I was selling on twitter for a while? But we all know how twitter's going, so I don't even remember my login info to delete the account, lol. I did make way better money than I ever did on etsy tho! Like, twice the sales in one year than I got on etsy in ~10. Not even exaggerating. I made decent sales on facebook from a page for my business, but stopped trying after the third time they changed the interface in less than 6 months. If you can figure out how it works though, go for it!
I'm trying to build a proper website of my own for Calendae Creations, but html is hard and so is the rest of my life, so that's on the back burner for now. I'm really not sure how successful it'll be if I ever get it up and running.
Currently this is my only sales presence online, and I haven't tabled at an in-person event since 2018. I've been pleasantly surprised at being able to generate any income at all on the website famous for not making money, lol. I do really want to get into more in-person sales, but I really can't speak much to how well knitting sells at different kinds of events, because when I used to do ren faires and flea markets I was mostly selling pottery, jewelry, and live plants. I'm pretty hopeful about trying to get a table at Staunton Pride next fall though?
Tbh, as much as I love my job, I really would not recommend this as a full time primary source of income to anyone who has literally any other options. I'm just too disabled to do anything else anymore.
Related, does anyone know how to file USA income tax for this kind of thing??? I am so lost trying to figure it out.

How is koko the gorilla like those dogs on tiktok at all. I get how there could be clever hansing influencing her behavior but I really don’t see how she could have done that without any understanding of language
Koko the Gorilla has been thought to exhibit Clever Hans Effect since the initial studies on her were published in the late 1970s. This is even present on her Wikipedia page, with other linguists calling Koko's caregiver and trainer's interpretations of her use of sign language as "sentimental nonsence". There has also always been pushback on the Koko experiment from actual primatologists.
One of the reblogs of my original Clever Hans post goes into this briefly and also pulls from THIS youtube video (but tw: ableism & animal abuse if you choose to watch).
What is boils down to is that Koko, and other apes in linguistics studies, were taught sign language the way dogs are taught "talking" buttons, through association. The handler/trainer then sometimes makes the leap to emotional responses much like happens with those with dog buttons. There is an excellent article HERE that describes the Koko situation quite well and touches on an important aspect both with Koko and the button dogs:
"As Koko’s trainer, adopted mum, business manager, and chief caregiver, Patterson wasn’t a neutral observer. If other scientists wanted to verify her claims, they had no access to Koko nor could they scrutinise any data. The only publicly available material is video recordings on YouTube, Facebook and various documentaries. It appears as if a lot of Koko’s signs were open to interpretation."
When scientists brought forward that all of Koko's communication was at the prompting of Patternson she simply refused to engage and was unable to come up with points for her position. You can also read transcripts of Patternson and Koko's communications and WHEW. is there a lot of prompting by Patternson to get the answer SHE wants.
There is a reason that we don't see continued ape to human language studies ever if often anymore. 1.) the ethics of it, Koko and other linguistic studies experiment apes lived in very specific and non ape appropriate environments due to the way the experiment and closeness to human behavior was structured and 2.) it is thought we can learn much more about apes by actually learning their forms of communications (shocker /s).
I cannot even begin to express how this is just the tip of the iceberg with the Koko stuff. But i guess most people would prefer to believe they weren't fooled by the Koko experiment because they feel sentimental/emotional about her, either way the information about this relating to Clever Hans is super easy to find. Literally google it and you'll find pages and pages discussing the shady and interpretive nature of the studies on her.

A Suruga-Ya International Buyer's Guide
Tumblr media
As Japan catches up with the times, more and more businesses become aware of the potential in overseas business. Because of that, storefronts like Suruga-Ya end up appearing as options for fans of Japanese only merchandise or items.
I am one such fan of Japanese merch and items, so of course I put in an order (with free shipping on a promo!) in. I've since gotten that order and thought I'd provide a bit of a buyer's guide for people interesting. The buyer's guide will include:
How To Purchase From Them
What You Can Purchase
Sales and Coupons
Warnings and Forewords
Shipping and Packaging
My Shopping Experience
So, without further ado, I'll get to explaining!
How Do You Buy From Suruga-Ya?
Tumblr media
Link To The Website Here
There's two ways, the "traditional", and the "new" (how I purchased this order). The traditional is purchasing through their JP/domestic website via a proxy, while the new is shopping via their global website.
Now, it might sound like a no brainer for international people to shop via the global site, but as I'll explain later on there's a few cases/reasons where using a proxy is the more reasonable, and even times cheaper option.
Finding Items
Tumblr media
Well, it's no CDJapan, I'll say that. Suruga-Ya's global website is propped up by almost exclusively Machine Translation. That means that the translations for some items can be really weird, like Yuta Okkotsu becoming Yuta Otsubone. Similarly, Jujutsu Kaisen gets translated to Sorcery Fight, and the translation struggles with correctly translating names (specifically those that are hiragana/katakana)
Tips For Better Searches
Limit number of keywords (instead of Yuta Okkotuse, just Yuta)
Search for JP names and literal TLs (e.g Sorcery Fight instead of Jujutsu Kaisen) as well
Search using the JP website, find the desired item, copy the item ID and search on the global site using that (more info later)
What Can You Buy?
Tumblr media
The answer to that question is, "pretty much everything under the sun". They carry everything so long as it's not illegal to import/export. Models, figures, tapestries, art books, manga, acrylics, keychains, the list just goes on and on. About the only thing that is very clearly absent is R18 Doujins (regular ones are still available).
One thing that's really nice is that they've created "storefronts" for popular brands/titles. Pokémon, Studio Ghibli, One Piece, and Sailor Moon are just a few of the examples present on the website. It can be really helpful when you're a fan of something specific like that considering how challenging searching for something can be.
Deals and Coupons
Tumblr media
This is the big one, the make or break for pricing. Suruga-Ya will, more often than not, have a promotional campaign going on for the global site. In fact, in the last 2 months there's been 5 weekends of free shipping. It's a crazy deal, and about the only way that international people will order from them.
If you want to keep up with promotional material though, they only post it on the website as an announcement, or on their Facebook page.
Tumblr media
Warnings and Forewords
Buying from anywhere online comes with a caveat, the price is high, the shipping is slow, so on and so forth. Suruga-Ya is no exception to that and features four aspects that potential buyers should be aware of before making a purchase.
1. Commission Fee
Tumblr media
All purchases are subject to a commission fee of 500Yen. Not terrible by any means, but it's an extra couple of bucks on an order that you might not have been aware of initially. To put it in perspective, Buyee takes out a "service fee" every time you make a purchase through their proxy service. It's effectively standard practice for these international orders, and you could argue that it takes the place of "tax" when shopping with them.
2. No Protective Packaging/Package Filler
Tumblr media
What you see is what you get. This was all that was in box 1 of my order. It does keep the items from moving around too much during shipping, but it still doesn't do anything to prevent damage or any harm coming to the items. It's especially an issue given that Suruga-Ya's boxes aren't super well fitted to the orders that fill them. I think when ordering cheap stuff like I did it's not a major concern, but for stuff like figures or other delicate items it's an issue. I'm hoping that they'll add a protective packaging option at checkout in the future for that reason.
3. Prices Differ Between Websites
Tumblr media
Once more, this is a common practice, and this is why proxy services can be worth it. They're not massive differences, but it certainly begins to accrue as a "foreigner tax". Furthermore, item availability differs between the sites. That is, you can find some things on the JP site, but not the global one. I reached out to customer support regarding that, and they stated that they plan to bring all legally importable/exportable items over to the global site, it's just that it will take time.
4. Items Are Used
Tumblr media
For people that have done proxy orders before, that's not any sort of surprise. But for some items it's worth taking note of, especially in terms of price. For example, say that instead of 2,250Yen this art book was more like 2,500Yen. Well, as it turns out, the retail price on Amazon Japan for the art book is a hair over 2,500Yen (2,530). In those cases, buyers may want to look at other options for the item in "new" condition elsewhere if they're wary of used items.
However, "used" in Japan is very different from "used" in somewhere like North America. Night and day, really. Later on I'll show what I got, and hopefully reaffirm buyers that "used" can basically mean "like new" with stuff like art books, and that they're absolutely worth purchasing.
Shipping
Tumblr media
It's fast, damn fast at that. With free shipping that's great, but for people looking to save money when there's not an active campaign you might struggle as DHL and EMS are the only shipping options offered by Suruga-Ya. No surface or sea mail to save a good chunk of change, so definitely be aware of the cost of shipping when making an order without a promo to cover the cost somewhat.
Packaging
Tumblr media
I got two packages (because I ended up making two orders, also please ignore the weird stretch Tumblr applied to the image), and these are my short form thoughts on it:
Boxes are not sturdy/solid and have caved and dented in a few spots
Items are secure, but not necessarily safe
Box sizes can be too large for some orders, allowing them to move around too much
No reinforcement to corners isn't great
Overall, you get what you pay for, and for free shipping it's not the worst. Certainly not what I'd want to be paying for when paying shipping though.
My Purchases
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As per usual, I largely got art books and some JP manga I've been collecting. Though more important than that is the elephant in the room. All of these items are used, but for the vast majority you'd never know. A lot of them came in plastic bags that were sealed, rathe typical of JP items which is really nice. Great condition, no signs of wear, and proper storage, it's hard to really call these things "used" all that often. However, there are exceptions.
Used Items
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I received two items that could be considered "used" in the typical sense. The first is some volumes of manga that had yellowed due to age or exposure to direct sunlight, and the other is a crease/bend in the corner of an art book. Neither are severe damages or deal breakers (for me) at their price, but they're things to take note of as not everything will be perfect. Another thing to note though is I have no way of knowing if the damage to the art book was there from the beginning or happened during transit due to lack of protection.
My Experience
Keeping it short, I'll summarize my thoughts on the order from start to finish.
Searching and filtering isn't as easy as it should be
Prices are really good, but lack of description (both in regards to content and condition) can deter potential buyers
Checkout process needs some work (can't get a shipping estimate until you provide a payment method)
Shipping is incredibly quick
Packaging is questionable and cause for concern with more delicate items
Customer service is nice, but accessing them is odd (only through apps like WhatsApp or Line)
Stickers placed directly on books is a massive no-no
Overall, I'd buy from them again with conditions.
Why/When To Buy
There's a few requirements to really make Suruga-Ya worth it. Deals, more specifically free shipping (usually), is a must to make the purchase worthwhile. You could probably get away with paying shipping and getting a good deal if they JP prices weren't cheaper than the global site, but they are. Because of that, the "extra cost" can add up quite quick if there's not a sale or something to offset it. Continuing on the topic of "extra cost", their ability between sites (currently) differs. Because of that, the quantity of items you can order differs as well, which can lead to "smaller" order sizes which can increase the relative cost due to shipping. And lastly, there's no order storage. If the product lists were consistent that wouldn't be an issue, but we're dealing with used items, these things come and go quite frequently. Really want an item but can't fill out a full order? Better hope that the item doesn't sell.
So, all in all, the conditions for buying from the Suruga-Ya global site are:
Deals/free shipping
Enough items to meet reasonable order size to save money (if no free shipping)
Pretty simple, but still important to remember
In The End
If you can field a sizeable order from the global website and there's a deal running, it's probably the best deal you'll find (but still check). If not though, look at buying through the JP site via proxy. There's less stress in maximizing the order, you can sit on the items in warehouse, and you can even combine with other sites. You just won't get free shipping. And I really do have to stress that that's the biggest selling point for buying from the global site. So keep your eyes out for those specials!

Tips for Pagan Parents
This post is for all the parents that follow a pagan or witchcraft path! Tips and tricks.
-Build a community of support around yourself. Resources for pagan parents are incredibly limited. To help make those parenting challenges easier on you, give yourself a place to turn to on those bad days! Join a Pagan Parenting Facebook group, or something along those lines!
-Start a “Spiritual Scouts” group! This is a group of young children (like boy or girl scouts) that do Pagan activities and you can even make up your own badges and have your own ceremonies.
-Bring a little magic into your child’s life -Embrace your child’s imagination -Bring Nature into your child’s everyday life.
-Involve your child in your faith. -Most pagan parents are not looking to push their personal beliefs on their children. Involving them in your faith and/or practice is a great way to help them find their own path! Help them celebrate the holidays and answer any questions they ask. Help them build their own set of Magickal tools like building their own set of Runes.
Some Everyday Tips and Tricks:
1. Transportation Magick: Most parents are busy driving their kids around from place to place. Mix in a little Magick! Play your favorite witchy music, look for divine messages on license plates or in the clouds, and talk to your guides once the kids have left the vehicle. Some good Magickal and folklore podcasts on Spotify: The Midnight Library and Supernatural. Use essential oils in your car, peppermint, lavender, eucalyptus depending on the mood.
2. Morning Blessings: In the morning, bless your coffee, tea, and breakfast by drawing sigils or symbols over them. Pray to your goddess (or deity) while getting ready in the morning. If you are an early riser, spend some time at your altar! If you are not a morning person, Try evening rituals instead!
3. Quick Divination: This is a great way to add Magick to any moment and connect with the divine. Read nature signs outside, try a rune or tarot mobile app for practice and knowledge. Listen to the songs stores play!
4. Lunch Break: Take the time to yourself and eat a lunch outside. Enjoy fresh air and connect with nature. If you have time, go for a short walk! Listen to a meditation podcast through earphones or just listen to nature! If your kids are with you, take them for a walk too! We look for items to bring home, pinecones, acorns, cool rocks. Look for anything Magickal!
5. Add Magick to your chores: I have an entire post about this—View on my Page "Turning the Mundane into the Magickal"
6. Cooking Magick Meals: If you are a kitchen witch, You got this covered! Consider learning how to add intention into your meals, work with culinary herbs, make teas, and more. Get the kids involved! Make moon cookies, craft fairy offerings, etc.

Tumblr media
In today’s digital world, social media has become an essential part of our daily lives. Whether you're sharing a photo with friends or following your favorite brands, social media platforms are everywhere. But did you know they are also powerful tools for businesses? That’s where social media marketing comes in.
What is Social Media Marketing?
Social media marketing is the use of social platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn to promote your business, connect with your audience, and build your brand. It's about creating and sharing content that engages your audience and encourages them to interact with your business.
Why is Social Media Marketing Important?
Reach a larger audience: Billions of people are on social media. This means you can reach potential customers all over the world.
Boost brand awareness: Social media helps people get familiar with your brand, products, and services.
Engage with your audience: You can talk directly to your customers, answer questions, and get feedback.
Drive traffic to your website: By sharing content with links to your site, you can bring more visitors to your pages.
Cost-effective marketing: Many social media platforms offer free tools to promote your business. Paid ads are also affordable and can be targeted to the right audience.
Key Social Media Platforms for Marketing
Facebook: With over 2.8 billion users, Facebook is ideal for reaching a wide audience. Businesses can create pages, post updates, run ads, and engage with followers.
Instagram: Instagram is perfect for visually-driven brands. If your business relies on photos or videos, like fashion, food, or art, Instagram is a great choice.
Twitter: Twitter is useful for sharing quick updates, news, and engaging in conversations. It's also great for customer service interactions.
LinkedIn: If your business targets professionals or B2B clients, LinkedIn is the best platform. It’s excellent for networking and establishing industry authority.
TikTok: This platform is a must if you want to reach younger audiences with creative, fun, and short video content.
Tips for Effective Social Media Marketing
Know your audience: Who are your customers? What are their interests? Understanding your audience helps you create content that speaks to them.
Post consistently: Regularly posting helps keep your audience engaged and builds a strong online presence. Tools like Hootsuite or Buffer can help schedule posts.
Create valuable content: Your posts should be interesting, informative, or entertaining. Share tips, behind-the-scenes looks, or answer customer questions.
Use hashtags: Hashtags help people find your posts. For example, if you’re posting about social media marketing, use hashtags like #SocialMediaMarketing or #DigitalMarketing.
Engage with your followers: Reply to comments, like posts, and thank people for their support. Engaging with your audience builds trust and loyalty.
Analyze and adjust: Use analytics tools like Facebook Insights or Instagram Analytics to see what’s working and what’s not. Adjust your strategy based on the data.
Final Thoughts
Social media marketing is one of the most effective ways to grow your business in today’s digital landscape. By understanding your audience, consistently posting valuable content, and engaging with your followers, you can create a strong online presence and boost your brand. Start small, experiment with different platforms, and soon you’ll see the power of social media marketing in action!

Boost Your Business with Digital Marketing in Gold Coast
Tumblr media
In the vibrant and competitive business environment of Gold Coast, standing out is more critical than ever. With stunning beaches, a thriving tourism industry, and a diverse economy, Gold Coast offers a unique landscape for businesses to flourish. However, to truly capitalize on the opportunities available, leveraging digital marketing is essential. This article explores how digital marketing can significantly boost your business in Gold Coast, providing practical tips and insights to help you get started.
Understanding the Digital Marketing Landscape
Digital marketing encompasses all online marketing efforts. Companies use digital platforms including websites, email, social media, and search engines to communicate with both present and potential clients. In Gold Coast, where the market is both dynamic and diverse, a robust digital marketing strategy can make a substantial difference.
Why Digital Marketing Matters
1. Reach a Wider Audience:
The internet is a global platform, and digital marketing allows you to reach a wider audience than traditional marketing methods. For businesses in Gold Coast, this means not just tapping into the local market but also attracting tourists and international clients.
2. Cost-Effective:
In many cases, digital marketing is less expensive than traditional marketing. Social media campaigns, email marketing, and search engine optimization (SEO) can offer high returns on investment without the hefty price tag of TV or print ads.
3. Measurable Results:
The capacity to monitor and assess outcomes is one of digital marketing's key benefits. Tools like Google Analytics and social media insights allow you to see what’s working and what’s not, enabling you to adjust your strategies accordingly.
Key Digital Marketing Strategies for Gold Coast Businesses
1. Search Engine Optimization (SEO):
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of making your website more visible on search engine results pages (SERPs). For businesses in Gold Coast, local SEO is particularly important. This involves optimizing your website for local search terms and ensuring your business appears in local listings and maps. Using keywords like "best café in Gold Coast" or "Gold Coast real estate" can help attract local traffic.
2. Content Marketing:
Content is king in the digital world. Creating high-quality, relevant content can attract and engage your target audience. For example, a Gold Coast travel agency could maintain a blog with tips on the best places to visit, events happening around the city, and hidden gems only locals know about. This not only helps with SEO but also establishes your business as an authority in the field.
3. Social Media Marketing:
Gold Coast is a visual paradise, making social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook perfect for marketing. Share stunning visuals of the coastline, behind-the-scenes looks at your business, customer testimonials, and upcoming events. Engage with your audience by responding to comments and messages, running contests, and using relevant hashtags to increase your reach.
4. Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Advertising:
With pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, you may post adverts on search engines and only be charged when someone clicks on them. This can be a very powerful strategy for increasing targeted website visitors. Google Ads and social media advertising platforms like Facebook Ads offer sophisticated targeting options, ensuring your ads are seen by the right people at the right time.
5. Email Marketing:
Building an email list and regularly communicating with your subscribers can be a powerful way to nurture leads and maintain customer relationships. Offer valuable content, special promotions, and personalized messages to keep your audience engaged and coming back for more.
Case Study: A Gold Coast Café's Digital Marketing Success
To illustrate the impact of digital marketing, let's look at a hypothetical case study of a local Gold Coast café, "Coastal Brews."
Challenge:
Coastal Brews, a quaint beachfront café, struggled to attract customers outside of peak tourist seasons. The owner wanted to increase year-round foot traffic and build a loyal customer base.
Strategy:
1. Local SEO: Coastal Brews optimized their website for local search terms like "best coffee in Gold Coast" and ensured their Google My Business listing was up-to-date with accurate information and positive reviews.
2. Content Marketing: They started a blog featuring articles on coffee brewing techniques, profiles of local suppliers, and upcoming events at the café. This content was shared on social media to drive traffic to their website.
3. Social Media Marketing: Stunning photos of their coffee, food, and beachfront location were posted regularly on Instagram and Facebook. They ran contests encouraging customers to share their own photos with a specific hashtag for a chance to win a free coffee.
4. PPC Advertising: Targeted Google Ads were set up to attract tourists searching for coffee shops in Gold Coast, especially during off-peak seasons.
5. Email Marketing: Coastal Brews collected email addresses through a sign-up form on their website, offering a discount on the first purchase. They sent monthly newsletters with updates, special offers, and personalized messages to subscribers.
Results:
Within six months, Coastal Brews saw a 40% increase in website traffic and a 25% increase in year-round foot traffic. Their social media following grew significantly, and they built a loyal community of regular customers.

How to Find Expert Bathroom Renovators in Eltham
Tumblr media
Renovating a bathroom can be a transformative experience, enhancing both the functionality and aesthetic of one of the most important spaces in your home. In Eltham, a suburb known for its picturesque settings and charming homes, finding the right expert bathroom renovator is crucial to ensuring a successful renovation project. This guide will walk you through the steps to find top-notch bathroom renovators in Eltham, offering practical tips and insights to make your search as smooth as possible.
1. Define Your Renovation Goals
Before you start your search for a bathroom renovator, it’s essential to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve with your renovation. Are you looking to completely overhaul your bathroom, or are you interested in smaller updates? Consider factors like:
Design Preferences: Modern, traditional, or a mix of styles.
Functional Needs: Additional storage, upgraded fixtures, or better lighting.
Budget: Determine how much you’re willing to invest in the renovation.
Having a detailed vision will help you communicate your needs effectively to potential renovators and ensure they understand your expectations.
2. Research Local Bathroom Renovators
Start your search by looking for bathroom renovators in Eltham. You can use a variety of resources:
Online Directories and Listings: Websites like Yelp, Yellow Pages, and Google Maps offer lists of local renovators with customer reviews and ratings.
Social Media: Platforms like Facebook and Instagram often feature local businesses and can provide insights into their work.
Home Improvement Websites: Sites like Houzz and HomeAdvisor can connect you with professionals and showcase their portfolios.
3. Check Credentials and Experience
When evaluating potential renovators, consider the following:
Licensing and Certification: Ensure the renovator holds the necessary licenses and certifications required in Victoria. This indicates they meet industry standards and regulations.
Experience: Look for renovators with significant experience in bathroom renovations. A long track record often reflects expertise and reliability.
Specializations: Some renovators may specialize in certain styles or types of renovations. Choose one whose expertise aligns with your project goals.
4. Review Portfolios and References
Reviewing a renovator’s portfolio is crucial to assessing their workmanship and style. Ask for examples of previous bathroom renovations they’ve completed. Pay attention to:
Quality of Work: Check for clean finishes, attention to detail, and overall craftsmanship.
Variety of Projects: A diverse portfolio indicates flexibility and experience with different styles and requirements.
Client Feedback: Request references from past clients to gain insights into their experiences and satisfaction with the renovator’s work.
5. Request Quotes and Compare
Once you’ve narrowed down your list of potential renovators, request detailed quotes from each. A thorough quote should include:
Scope of Work: A detailed description of the renovation tasks and materials.
Timeline: An estimated timeline for project completion.
Cost Breakdown: Clear pricing for labor, materials, and any additional expenses.
Comparing quotes will help you understand the market rate and ensure you’re getting a fair price for the work.
6. Ask the Right Questions
When meeting with renovators, asking the right questions can help you gauge their suitability for your project:
What is your approach to project management and communication?
How do you handle unexpected issues or changes during the renovation?
What warranties or guarantees do you offer on your work?
Can you provide a detailed contract outlining all aspects of the renovation?
Their responses will give you a sense of their professionalism and how they manage projects.
7. Verify Insurance and Safety Measures
Ensure the renovator has adequate insurance coverage, including public liability and workers’ compensation. This protects you in case of accidents or damage during the renovation. Additionally, inquire about their safety measures and protocols to ensure a safe working environment.
8. Trust Your Instincts
Finally, trust your instincts when choosing a bathroom renovator. The right professional should make you feel confident and comfortable throughout the renovation process. Consider their communication style, responsiveness, and overall demeanor.
Conclusion
Finding the right bathroom renovator in Eltham involves careful research and consideration. By defining your goals, researching local experts, reviewing their work, and asking the right questions, you’ll be well-equipped to choose a renovator who can bring your vision to life. A successful renovation not only enhances your bathroom but also adds value to your home, making the effort to find the right professional well worth it.

RECENT SEO & MARKETING NEWS FOR ECOMMERCE, JUNE 2024
Tumblr media
You know the drill - here's all the marketing, SEO, social media etc. news for the last month. You can see the Etsy and other ecommerce news here.
TOP NEWS & ARTICLES
As of July 5th, sites that cannot be read on mobile will no longer be indexed by Google. This has been coming for a long time, and we’ve all had plenty of warning, so it is unlikely to affect many ecommerce sites.
One final reminder that you need to save your old Google Universal Analytics data before July 1, as it will vanish on that date. There are several ways to do this. [Even if you never upgraded to Google Analytics 4, the old stats will still be going away, so don't miss out on saving the important stuff!]
SEO: GOOGLE & OTHER SEARCH ENGINES
If you are interested in deep dives into the recent Google leak, Aleyda Solis has compiled a Google spreadsheet (ironically), of articles on the topic, along with resources.
It appears that Google’s AI Overviews are so bad that they are now only showing up for 15% of queries, down from 84%.
Google’s latest spam update started June 20th.
This case study on Google’s March core update looks at the hazards of having high-ranking but irrelevant content on your website.
Another recent study looking at the effect of various Google updates found that some losing sites may have been trying to game SEO a little too much in Google’s eyes.
Out-of-date content can hurt SEO, but there are proven tactics for dealing with those pages.
If you missed any Google news last month - and there was a lot of it! - Barry Schwartz summarized May for you.
SOCIAL MEDIA - All Aspects, By Site
General
Artists concerned about AI tools training on their items are joining Cara in droves, and many are hoping to leave Meta properties at the same time. Cara allows users to add Glaze to their images, which disrupts AI training.
True federated social sites are getting closer, with an app that lets Mastodon users and Bluesky users connect without joining the other site. Confused about how federation works? This TechCrunch article goes through all of the current details, and highlights some of the biggest federated sites, including Mastodon, Threads, and Bluesky.
Facebook (includes relevant general news from Meta)
Meta will stop using users’ personal posts and information to train its AI models in the EU, due to privacy concerns.
Turns out that using AI to detect use of AI is just as flawed as most applications of AI - ask Meta, which is inaccurately claiming some real photos were “Made with AI”.
Facebook thinks it is for young people again. Yes, really. Among other areas, “Facebook Dating is continuing to see steady and strong daily active user growth, and is up +20% year-over-year with young adults in the United States and Canada.”
Here’s a decent overview of various types of Meta ads; it is written by Wix, but has some useful points for any advertiser.
Instagram
The head of Instagram divulged some tips on the algorithm recently, including the fact that video gets more views than photos these days.
Some video ads on Instagram can’t be skipped right now, but it is only a test.
Apparently Instagram’s Notes feature is quite popular with teens, so the platform is adding more to it. This includes mentions and likes.
LinkedIn
If you want a full sized image in posts with links, you will need to pay for LinkedIn Ads from now on. Regular posts with links now have downsized images. If you don’t know anything about LinkedIn Ads, here’s how they work.
LinkedIn Ads can no longer use data from LinkedIn Groups to target people in Europe.
Pinterest
Pinterest is now working with Shopify for its “Pinterest Inclusion Fund” which helps underrepresented groups use Pinterest to boost their businesses.
Reddit
Reddit’s traffic is said to be up 39% this year, increasing interest in using it for marketing. It is also making people worry about bad information.
Reddit has changed its conversation ads.
Snapchat
Snapchat now has increased safety features, including improved blocking abilities.
“Snap Inc., the parent company of Snapchat, has agreed to pay $15 million to settle a gender discrimination lawsuit from the California Civil Rights Department...Snap paid women less and offered them fewer promotions when compared to male employees.”
Threads
Threads has expanded the ability to post to other federated social sites.
TikTok
TikTok has combined a lot of its Creator Center tools into one dashboard called TikTok Studio.
Klaviyo now integrates with Tiktok, so advertisers can find their known audiences and personalize ads.
Twitter
Hootsuite has updated its guide to Twitter ads, which is quite detailed.
(CONTENT) MARKETING (includes blogging, emails, and strategies)
July content marketing ideas include International Joke Day (July 1). [I can’t decide if I am insulted or not that it is the same day as Canada Day.]
Patreon has announced several upcoming changes to their creator tools, including the ability to give away paid memberships to fans at no charge, opening chat to free members, and a countdown clock for big posts.
ONLINE ADVERTISING (EXCEPT INDIVIDUAL SOCIAL MEDIA AND ECOMMERCE SITES)
Microsoft’s smart shopping campaigns will become “Performance Max” in the near future, although you can also make that change yourself now.
Brave now has Search Ads in some areas, after testing them for a year and a half.
Websites that offer coupon codes and use Google’s free shopping ads can sign up to have the codes displayed in Google's organic search listings. You can get all of the details here.
STATS, DATA, TRACKING
If you use Google Shopping Ads (free or paid) for your website, you can now see their performance in Google Images by using the Google Search Console.
Google Analytics 4 has an updated Realtime report now.
BUSINESS & CONSUMER TRENDS, STATS & REPORTS; SOCIOLOGY & PSYCHOLOGY, CUSTOMER SERVICE
Price cutting (as opposed to sales and discounts) is the latest retail trend. “[C]onsumer spending on goods fell 0.2% during [April]”, while US prices were up 2.7%.
US consumers are still buying some types of “hot” items, such as clothing, but they are spending less on electronics and homewares.
UK ecommerce sales to the EU have dropped £5.9 billion since Brexit.
IMAGES, VIDEO, GRAPHIC DESIGN, & FREE ONLINE TOOLS
Adobe confirms it will not use its customers’ content to train AI.
A list of 19 new design tools, including free fonts. [Note: some of the tools use AI.] And here are even more free font libraries and resources.
