The Famicom Disk System looks like it would have been really fun.
We should bring floppy disks back, just for the vibe.

Are there any noteworthy differences for Medusa? Or anyone else from the nes game for that matter? I’m curious if Palutena offering to spare Medusa is different at all, and if the one Hewdraw head being proud of Pit is too.
Alright! I'll try to squeeze in as much as possible. Coincidentally, Medusa and Hewdraw are probably the only NES characters worth talking about. I'll get to them after some filler though... plunge in below... 🙏
Speaking of the NES, one interesting difference actually comes from the fact that the original Kid Icarus itself had quite the different release in Japan. It's common knowledge by now, but whereas we westerners got the NES, Japan had the Famicom, or "Family Computer." A couple years into its life, it received an add-on in the form of the Disk System. This allowed for the console to read games on floppy disks, which had more efficient data storage and better sound quality. This was actually how Kid Icarus was released over there. Here's a secondhand copy of the game I found while I was in Akihabara:
Tumblr media
All of that preface to say that, thanks to being on a floppy disk, the game has significantly better audio quality when it comes to the sound effects. In Kid Icarus Uprising, the reapers and the brief moment in which 8-bit Hewdraw appears on the bottom screen sound completely different between versions! I uhh... don't have audio files for those. So let's move onto characters...
There isn't anything different about Twinbellows (both versions even have the same Nintendogs joke). The most I could say for Pandora is, at least to me, the contrast in her personalities seem far more extreme in the Japanese version (like she's all the more dour in chapter 5 and all the more peppy in chapter 22). Thanatos is also shockingly similar between versions, the only thing to note is that obviously the bit about the name change doesn't exist in the Japanese version. Instead Thanatos just exposes the fact that Pit does not remember him at all. He also ends almost all of his sentences with デス (desu) which is a pun on both the polite ending particle です (desu) and English "death." Get it?
But let's get on with the specific characters you mentioned, starting with Medusa. As I've discussed dozens of times before, Japanese speech is very flexible in terms of sentence enders and pronoun choice. Her speech style is kinda masculine, as she ends most of her sentences with masculine ending particles like ぜ (ze), ぞ (zo), and な (na). She also uses the masculine おまえ (omae) to refer to others (it's really informal since it's literally referencing that which is in front of one's face, so it would only be used among close friends). Despite all this gruffness, she still refers to herself as わたし (watashi), which although gender neutral in most scenarios, it can have a feminine feel to it, especially in casual contexts, as women are socialized to use it.
To answer your question, Palutena's request that Medusa withdraw goes about the same in both versions, even down to the terms being to stay within the castle.
Tumblr media
The only real difference is Palutena gives a little bit more preface in the Japanese version:
Tumblr media
"While we're at it, how about we deal with this quietly?"
Tumblr media
"Withdraw the Underworld army, and if you can promise not to take a single step from this castle, I shall give you mercy at last."
In this same conversation, one thing to note is in the Japanese version, Medusa explicitly describes herself as a doll, making the twist that someone else is pulling the strings a little more obvious. Here's the exchange in English:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And in Japanese:
Tumblr media
"I feel like I've become a doll. My head's in a daze."
Tumblr media
"Indeed, your vitality is weak. Perhaps those are the side effects of resurrection..."
But these are ultimately minor, I think. Just about all of her dialogue goes about the same. Even that one discussion in the ground section of chapter 6 about how humans perceive the gods is about the same. The only conversation with any significant change is this one brief interaction she and Pit share in the flight segment of chapter 9 when Pit crosses into the Underworld:
I always found this bit interesting because it gives some incidental details on how the power of flight works... leading to my personal theory Pit's issue might be that he's unable to generate any kind of lift. But none of that is present in the Japanese version:
It's pretty mundane. I'll translate:
Medusa: So you've made it this far.
Pit: Medusa!
Medusa: Palutena's spear, Pit. The demon who stands in my way. I welcome you. Come at me anytime.
Pit: I'm not a demon! I'm an angel! In the name of the goddess Palutena, I will punish you!
I really have no guesses as to why this was changed.
As for Hewdraw... they're all pretty different! The left and middle heads (the blue and purple ones respectively) have similar characteristics between versions, while the right head (the pink one) is like, psychotic in the Japanese version. Even with any similarities, the dialogue is overall pretty different. I can only upload so many images and audio files so I'll just cover what I think are the highlights.
In the initial bickering between the heads, it's all mostly the same aside from this line:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"To hell with the Underworld," he says. He must really be going through it.
If you leave the right head for last, the exchanges are different:
The actor gives an entertaining performance, I think. Well, so does the English one. Anyway, I'll translate:
Hewdraw: Gyah! The other heads!
Pit: Now for the finishing blow!
Hewdraw: How dare you?! I'll defeat you, I'll defeat you, I'll defeat you, I'll defeat you, I'll absolutely defeat you!!
Told you he was crazy. The middle head also has different dialogue if you leave him for last, in English he'll be nonchalant about it while in the Japanese version he'll get fired up. Anyway, once the level transitions to the ground portion, Palutena uses a special power to lure a head from its rampage. In the English version it's simply a "monster pheromone" but in the Japanese version it's called the "Palutena pheromone." ...I'm not discussing the implications of that. As a result, all the conversations have different dialogue that plays into that. They occur if the fight goes on for long enough (I evidently finish these fights too quickly because this is my first time hearing any of these), so I'll include those as audio files. I'll rapid-fire through 'em all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Stop it, quit it, stop it, quit it!"
French is the language of love, after all. No French in the Japanese version though.
Hewdraw: Oh oh oh, I can't stop my body!
Pit: You're a melting pot of excitement, aren't you?
Hewdraw: Calm down, calm down! Beans! Count beans!
Maybe counting beans is like counting sheep? I don't really know what it means but it's definitely what he said.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Whoa!! I've fallen in love!"
Pit's line keeps the portrait used in the Japanese version (the fist pump one) which does not at all match what he says here in English, lol.
Hewdraw: Ugh! Crap! I can't control these urges!
Pit: While I'm at it, I think I'll defeat you!
Hewdraw: Shut it! I won't bear to be done in by these feelings!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"It's unbearable, it's unbearable! You smell unbearable!"
Hewdraw: Ugyah! This is the best! I'll trounce you!
Palutena: Quite the heavy metal vibe, huh?
Hewdraw: Wow wow! I'll send everything flying, baby!
As you can see and hear... they're all considerably different. Next is the regenerated Hewdraw fight, and not to worry, the middle head still pays his respects to Pit:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"You've become strong, Pit..."
Tumblr media
"What was that about, saying something like a father would."
I dunno man, when's my dad ever gonna tell me I've gotten strong? Huh?
The right Hewdraw head will actually pay some respects too, crazily enough. As is the pattern with this head, the whole interaction is actually quite different:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the Japanese:
Tumblr media
"I got so tired of waiting I fell asleep!"
Tumblr media
"Prepare yourself!"
Tumblr media
"Hyahahahaha! I'll tear you apart!"
Tumblr media
"You were quite strong, heh..."
Tumblr media
"This was quite tough, heh...!"
Ah so that's what this Hewdraw wanted to say! Teehee. Oh, and Pit's mimicking Hewdraw's style of speech here. I tried to make that come through in my translation...
As for the left head, in the English version he says something like "I'm too pretty to die" while in Japanese he just says something like "I've been defeated" but he uses the humble speech variant which is really interesting? Because otherwise they speak very informally.
Well, this became more of a Hewdraw post than anything, huh? I got a bit all over the place here, but I hope fun was had nonetheless.
I will now make like the right head and go to sleep. Until next time...

Talk with carrier
Masterlist
The surface on the planet doesn't let much to the imagination, there is no living things here, not even an atmosphere, dust is all that settled, maybe a rock or two in the horizon.
But you're here, sitting at his side, a little smile on your face, listening to his ranting: "I still don't get what you saw in him".
At his words, you only smile.
"Why?"
"His paint job was tacky, it still is, but in a very much old man way", what a fast response, "it's shouting for attention, as in look at me I'm the cool religious guy kind of tacky".
"Your own screams edgy and angsty to the heavens above".
You giggle at that, Sunset looks at Moonshine, the disrespect, "Bro, really? I'm having a moment here".
"Better make it fast, they'll notice we're gone pretty soon"
"No offense Moonie, but your presence...", He makes a so-so manner with his servo, being as sassy as he can, his paint job is sacred; Moonshine just smiles like he never broke a damn thing in his life before flipping him the middle digit, you shove your hand at Sunshine before he has the time to respond in the same way, like a reprimanding mother to her child.
Like you would do if you were really alive, really here.
"Show some manners"
"Right, sorry, but you gotta admit he is a piece of-"
"He is but he is a good friend to you, isn't he?"
The very same friend does a crooning sound at it and Sunset has to shut his intake if he doesn't want to be reprimanded, again, "How did you come from such a sweet and kind organic?"
"I learned half of my bad words assets from this very side of the family, not cute in the slightest", he cuts short that conversation, now looking directly at the eyes that resemble his, or is it the other way around?, "Now, again, why did you like his paint job? Direct answers only".
You seem to ponder on it, Sunset wants to believe that's the reason and not the system running of the golden disk to give him an answer, "His paint job draws a lot of attention, but I liked that it was his own".
"His own, what do you mean by that?"
"Can we cut this short and ask directly what can make him desirable to another specimen of our race?"
"Shut the fuck up-!"
"Is this about a someone?", You ask, before touching his servo, hope or what could be sensed like it glimmering in your eyes, "I knew this day would come".
Ah, he really wanted to see that excitement on your eyes, no an imitation done by computer, but it was great so far.
No one can have everything in life, and he should speed this up if he didn't want his scandalous sire on the way to what used to be a clinic to offline mechs, only because he wanted to know a little bit more of you, even if just a bit, even if is only a simulation, as your golden disk feeds the way you tell him all he wants to know.

Picks and Shovels Chapter One (Part 5)
Tumblr media
Picks and Shovels is a new, standalone technothriller starring Marty Hench, my two-fisted, hard-fighting, tech-scam-busting forensic accountant. You can pre-order it on my latest Kickstarter, which features a brilliant audiobook read by Wil Wheaton.
Tumblr media
This month, I'm serializing the first chapter of my next novel, Picks and Shovels, a standalone Martin Hench novel that drops on Feb 17:
https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250865908/picksandshovels
The book is up for presale on a Kickstarter that features the whole series as print books (with the option of personalized inscriptions), DRM-free ebooks, and a DRM-free audiobook read by Wil Wheaton:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/doctorow/picks-and-shovels-marty-hench-at-the-dawn-of-enshittification
It's a story of how the first seeds of enshittification were planted in Silicon Valley, just as the first PCs were being born.
Here's part one:

Part four:
https://pluralistic.net/2025/01/13/wanting-it-badly/#discovering-e-discovery
And now, onto part five!
“You gentlemen must have customers who do accounting,” I said. “They know your systems. They know accounts. Why not use someone you already have a relationship with? Someone from the family, as you put it?” I loved solving puzzles; it was what made me both a programmer and an accountant. I had flipped into puzzle-solving mode, and was looking for loose ends where I could begin the untangling process.
The three men looked at each other, then away. This wasn’t a question they wanted to answer.
“When it comes to our customers,” the rabbi said, “we want them to feel . . . safe. We don’t want them to think that the business is being distracted by foolish disputes.”
“We don’t want them to be tempted to take sides,” Father Marek said, and I thought he was being a lot more honest than the rabbi. I could imagine that plenty of people would choose three young, pious women over these three old, feuding, rich clerics.
I could tell that the bishop and the rabbi both resented Father Marek’s answer and were barely keeping themselves from telling him so because they both knew it would make the situation even worse. That was okay. I had the lay of the land.
“I think I understand.” They shifted, looked at each other, at me. They were worried. They thought I might say no. They didn’t have a plan B. “It certainly presents a fascinating technical challenge. My only concern is that it sounds very time-consuming and I have a lot of work right now, honestly. Some days, I feel it’s more than I can handle.” I enjoyed watching that land, seeing their incipient panic. These three weren’t so tough. After all, they’d been made fools of by three cloistered, sheltered young women around my age.
“The job is well-compensated,” Bishop Clarke said. He smiled. All those teeth. “After all, the alternative is a costly, drawn-out lawsuit, and even if we win, all it will accomplish is a shutdown of CF. If you can help us bring them into the Fidelity Computing family, we’ll not only save the lawyer bills, we’ll all make more money. We’re prepared to pay to make that happen.”
“I normally bill my freelance work at twenty-five dollars an hour.” It was a breathtaking sum and I’d had to practice saying it into a mirror so I wouldn’t look ashamed when I named it. I watched them freeze up and do some mental math, contemplating how long it would take to review the documents on ten boxes’ worth of floppy disks.
Bishop Clarke’s smile strained wider, looking like it might be hurting his face. “That’s a very reasonable rate, but we had something else in mind—we thought we might align all of our incentives by offering you a share of the bounty of a successful outcome.”
I regretted coming. What a waste of time. I was only twenty-one years old, but I knew better than to sign up for a commission. Who did they think I was, one of the rubes they got to sell printer paper for them in return for a dollar on every box sold? I almost walked out. I didn’t, though. I had to hear this.
“Could you explain how that would work?”
“You get twenty-five percent,” Father Marek said, staring hard at me. “A quarter of their projected annual revenue, based on the figures you pull out of those files.” He nodded minutely at the tower of floppy disks, not taking his eyes off mine. “Our sales are already down a thousand dollars a month. You figure out how much they’re making every month, figure out how much they’re growing every month, multiply it by twelve, and then divide it by four, and send us an invoice.”
“No matter how much it comes to?”
“No matter how much it comes to,” he said. “Like you said, it’s a lot of work.”
I mulled this over. There was a catch. What was it? I got a hunch.
“No matter what the outcome?” I asked.
They looked at each other. “No,” Rabbi Finkel said. “No, the deal is for a portion of a satisfactory outcome. If your work makes us money, then you make money.”
“And if it doesn’t?”
The rabbi smiled. “I’m sure you’ll find the information we’re looking for,” he said. “We know they’ve broken the law and we know the evidence will be in all those files.”
“But if I can’t find it, or if it’s not enough to convince them to settle and sell?”
“You get nothing,” Father Marek snapped. “Nothing. We win, you win. We lose, you lose.”
I decided I liked him the best of the three. He wasn’t trying to hide who he was or what the situation was. He made it clear he didn’t think much of me, but at least he thought enough of me to give it to me straight. I got the impression that Bishop Clarke would knife me in the heart without losing that amazing smile, and that Rabbi Finkel would murmur reassurances as he gave it a twist. Not Father Marek. He’d give me an honest snarl as he did it.
I had been ready to do it a minute before. Now I was ready to walk. My short time in the Bay Area had made it clear that I wasn’t going to get stock options in the next Apple Inc. just because I kept their books, nor was I going to be able to command giant amounts of money just for showing up and creating the foundations of some hot company’s big product, like Art.
But if there’s one thing I’d learned from accounting, it was that companies didn’t pay you if they didn’t have to.
“I’m sorry, gentlemen—Reverend Sirs—but I think this won’t work out. There’s just too many ways this could go wrong. I could do my job perfectly, put hundreds of hours of work into it, and you could fail to accomplish your merger due to factors beyond my control.”
Their faces turned to stone. They glared at me. The rabbi opened his mouth to say something, but Father Marek silenced him with a pointed throat-clearing. Bishop Clarke turned on his smile. Father Marek gathered up his notepad and put his pen in his breast pocket and slowly climbed to his feet. He was taller—far taller than I’d guessed. He had legs like a cricket’s, they just kept unfolding. I had to force myself not to flinch as he shifted toward me.
“Marty,” the bishop said, “I completely understand, really I do. But there’s no need to give up hope. We’re reasonable people. Perhaps you would like to make a counteroffer?”
I nearly left. But for a moment there, I’d felt close to the dream of Silicon Valley—the riches, the fame, the power to change so many lives. “What about . . .” The rabbi and the bishop leaned forward. Father Marek perched on his long legs and folded his arms. “What about my hourly rate, or twenty-five percent of whatever I make for you, whichever is greatest?”
“What about whatever is least?” the bishop fired back. His smile never wavered.

I'm sorry I absolutely fucked him up in the lab guys
I just really wanna talk about my take on Bob2.0 'cause I wove him too much.
(This only makes sense in my series canon sadly so TLDR: cartoon characters can die in various ways and go to a purgatory but sometimes other forms of media sneak in unknowingly)
Tumblr media
Since the third book ended with him floating off into space this is a variant in which he, somehow, died. He can't remember how and he's far away from both HEAVEN-1 and all the other Bobs. The only ones he can interact with are the ones that have canonically died and the first generation (who also can't remember how they died), all of which are hard wired to his IBM 5150 computer monitor he's stuck in.
They can be sent out into space by hijacking other spaceships but it's too risky to do (he's fully skint too).
🪐✨꒷꒦꒷꒦꒷꒦꒷꒦꒷꒦꒷꒷꒦꒷꒦꒷꒦꒷꒦꒷꒦꒷꒷꒦꒷꒦꒷꒦꒷꒦꒷꒦꒷꒷꒦꒷꒦🪐✨
Additional Notes and headcannons
⚙️ He's quite bitter he lost Charlie since he's now shorter than before (mainly 'cause the android model he stole was prebuilt and he doesn't know how to readjust it). He also has to recharge as well and can't do much either (he can access the IBM computer system his head belongs to but then he just turns into a regular ass computer, it does let him adjust his system which he does every night with the ROAMERS controlling stuff outside).
⚙️Since most of the other Bobs are still in slight control of his system he tends to flip between personalities and even memories (rarely shows up but sometimes he casually drops stuff that never happened to him).
⚙️ The other Bobs can intervene if they're put in the IBM system (some are more hardwired in than others but some can be transferred to floppy disks, much like Bob-1 they all lost their ships except for Milo).
⚙️LOOK ME IN THE EYE AND TELL ME THIS MAN DOESN'T HAVE AUTISM! Gestures with his hands when he talks, prefers solitude and can do it for long periods of time, hyperfixates on random subjects and sci-fi, struggles with interacting with others outside of his small group of friends and family, an inability to comfort others. I can SMELL it on him man!
⚙️ This man has a roadtrip soundtrack, no one can change it and anyone who does gets put in the ship storage hull (it's mostly a mix-trail of 80's/90's stuff, ELO, Thomas Dolby and Talking Heads).
⚙️ He's essentially completely denounced any type of romance between him since he's too out there for most others (flirting has been observed to cause him to do a mental tailspin).
⚙️ Feral as fuck. Not only does he forget he's still human to a degree at times but he tends to go into weird manic over analysis moments (also tends to devolve into a mad scientist without realising).
⚙️ Suffers with slight touch starveness due to him being unable to properly touch anyone intimately for a long time* (this is most evident with casual touch so it's unsure if he could handle anything further).
⚙️ Is "slightly" hyperfixated with both Spore and 90's alien stuff (I'm going HARD on my headcannoning here. I'm not against him being a classic sci fi nerd but I like the idea he's more into a specific sub genre rather than just being a generic nerd**).
⚙️ Adding a bit more to it I also like to think he's into the LEGO Space sets as well. Alongside Guardians of the Galaxy (man probably had enough time to binge it).
⚙️Most of his other attributes and habits from before still stand. He still likes to talk shit about religion and often gets a bit arrogant when talking about his old job and achievements. I did nuke a bit of his overt geniuses from the book since I (for some reason) think he gets slight moments where he messes up hard by over assuming stuff.
⚙️Every single Bob treats Homer like the lil brother once they found out he's still kicking. The second he comes in at a bad time the others just try 'n shoo him out so he won't see anything too graphic.
⚙️ I'll probably go into this a more later but he has like the weirdestly wholesome dynamic with P.C, like they're just two mad scientist weirdos talking about random stuff and being feral.
*I know this one sounds dumb but like... I don't think he ever tried hitting on any Deltans at any point for obvious reasons, and his only friend was Archimedes. So obviously the man's gotta be a bit on the touch starved side.
**yes I know he's fan girly over Von Neumann Probes I mean like media, he's only really into conventional sci fi stuff so I like to think his other ones are more tied to space in different ways.

Flash Thompson Redemption Masterlist
A Soft Place to Land (ao3) - Ink_Vault betty/ned, flash/peter N/R, 98k
Summary: "With great power comes great responsibility." Yeah, right. More like, with great power comes stab wounds and bloody sheets and a hero complex that could take down even the strongest of men. And Peter, well, he isn't the strongest of men. Not to mention that Peter's hero complex doesn't exactly extend to himself.
May still doesn’t know that he’s Spiderman. Because of this, she also doesn’t know about his increased metabolism, hunger, strength, sensitivity, everything. He didn’t really notice, for the first few weeks, until he hears May on the phone with one of her work friends discussing how she didn’t realize how much teenage boys eat. Peter immediately stopped eating.
Flash knows something is up. He knows the signs, or at least he thinks he does. And he's going to get to the bottom of things, one way or another.
Bad Reactions (ao3) - orphan_account M, 5k
Summary: Flash finds Peter mid-panic attack, and for once, isn't an idiot about it.
don't you forget about me (ao3) - OnlyForward G, 8k
Summary: peter parker, ned leeds, michelle “mj" jones, cindy moon & flash thompson are all in school for saturday detention. as secrets get spilled, they get to know each other a lot better over the course of the nine hour day.
aka the breakfast club but midtown high edition
end of beginning (ao3) - webss312 mentioned peter/mj, pepper/tony G, 126k
Summary: Eight months ago, Spider-Man was killed in an explosion orchestrated by HYDRA, leaving behind his mourning friends and family.
Eight months ago, Peter Parker opened his eyes in an underground bunker, in a room with Director Fury.
The only one who knows of Peter’s continued presence in the land of the living is Fury himself, and he offers Peter a proposal— becoming an undercover SHIELD agent.
Fury's motivation: a HYDRA computer disk containing critical information– and Peter (enhanced, anonymous, and seemingly deceased) is the perfect undercover agent.
Peter’s motivation: protect his friends and family, and continue his duties as Spider-Man, in order to take down one of the most infamous supervillain organizations in the world. No biggie.
Everywhere you go (there’s someone after you) (ao3) - Spider_enthusiast pepper/tony T, 22k
Summary: And just like that Peter’s entire world collapsed. With all his luck, all of the gods, and all of the odds, he got placed with the one person he didn’t want. He turned to Ned and they shared a devastating look.
“Well, what are you all waiting for? Get to work!” Mr Harrison said, spinning his chair back to his desk.
Ned and Peter stood up, both grabbing their things. “We jinxed ourselves.” Ned mumbled.
Peter sighed, “I know.”
Or; Peter is placed in a science project group with Ned and FLASH, just his luck. Now he had to figure out how to get through this project while dealing with Flash’s sudden extra-passive-agressive-ness. What the hell was his problem??
Little did he know Flash wasn’t too excited about this either, especially not while finding files on Peter Parker in his own house. Why the hell did his dad have files about Peter and Spiders at OsCorp? And what the hell was an “enhanced one”??
Flash Thompson, First Aid Extraordinaire (ao3) - angels_creative, Brentinator T, 9k
Summary: Just barely managing to stumble through, Peter had all but a second before his knees buckled and he fell face-first into the rug beneath him. Breathing heavily, he could feel someone placing a hand on his shoulder, someone turning him over, but his eyes had already started to shut and he couldn't figure out who it was.
"Parker?" he heard, before he lost consciousness. "What the f—?"
(Or, Peter tries to get help after being injured on patrol, and accidentally reveals his identity in the process.)
Fosters, Brothers, Friends (ao3) - JAWorley G, 34k
Summary: Flash's parents die and he doesn't have any other family to go to, so he goes into the system. He's upset about his family, but also can't believe his luck when the social worker tells him he's going to be fostered by none other than Tony Stark and Pepper Potts. But then he gets up to the penthouse and is confused as hell to find Peter Parker there.
OR
Flash can’t figure out what Parker’s deal is. He doesn’t understand why Peter has a bedroom in Tony Stark’s house, or why he is there every weekend, or why he gets to spend time in Tony’s lab, but Flash doesn’t. Flash isn’t a bad guy, even if he is sometimes a jerk. He learns that perfection doesn’t equal love, but sometimes imperfection is what makes a family whole. This is an Iron Dad fic through and through, but in an outsider POV format as Flash is discovering what's going on.
how to return home (ao3) - JBSForever T, 10k
Summary: Flash Thompson is a good person, but not a great one, so when Peter Parker accidentally gets drunk at his house party, all he can do is say, “Shit.”
- - -
Or: the one where Flash is just trying to be a decent person and get a drunk Peter home. Peter, on the other hand, has different plans.
Letters I Can Never Send (ao3) - Misscar past peter/mj T, 55k
Summary: Set post NWH.
For the first time in Peter’s life, he is alone. No friends, no May, no other Avengers, and no one that remembers who he is. All he has left is Spider-Man. So he starts over. If he keeps writing letters to May, nobody needs to know. There’s no one for him to tell anyway.
How Peter Parker rebuilds his life one month at a time.
Show Me a Piece of Your Heart (ao3) - happybeans T, 15k
Summary: Peter considers the pros and cons of telling Mr. Stark something important about his past. Meanwhile, he's busy with an investigation as Spider-Man and a Robotics project for which he's been paired up with Flash Thompson, of all people! How's he going to survive this one?
Smiling to the Mirror (ao3) - ambivalentangst G, 5k
Summary: Tony Stark meets Flash Thompson at a formal event neither of them wants to be at. He's not exactly expecting to see himself in the kid dressed to the nines and doing calculus at a back table, but life is full of surprises that way.
He's also not expecting the two of them to have a mutual friend, of sorts, but he's good at rolling with the punches—or knives, as it were.
//
Or, Tony Stark and Flash Thompson meet without knowing what they have in common, and this leads to some interesting situations.
Under the Surface (ao3) - Dwoality G, 10k
Summary: Flash overworks himself to sickness but luckily Peter, the angel that he is, is there to take care of him.
Walls (ao3) - faerialchemist T, 7k
Summary: “Miss Jones-Watson, you’re partnered with Mr. Thompson.”
Flash’s eyes found hers from across the classroom, and MJ gave him a curt nod to acknowledge their pairing. When his upper lip curled in distaste, she fought the urge to roll her eyes.
MJ was not looking forward to this.
We Can't Have Faith For Everybody (ao3) - Hale13 peter/mj T, 38k
Summary: It starts like this:
MJ and Flash, hands cuffed to each other and Peter, wrists and ankles held to the wall by thick metal cuffs and dangling in a way that’s surely to leave his shoulders aching.
The first week Peter, verbally, gives as good as he gets. He never lashes out physically and always does what their captors want the first time they ask. He still spends most of his time that he is in the cell chained uncomfortably to the wall. After the first week someone, apparently, decides that Peter is weak enough from the constant abuse and malnourishment that he is no longer chained up after his sessions; just dropped unceremoniously onto the dirty floor and left for MJ and Flash to care for.
Or:
Peter, Michelle and Flash get kidnapped to get information on Tony Stark.
You Will Be Found (ao3) - faerialchemist T, 13k
Summary: Peter snickered, shaking his head as he tucked his phone into his backpack before Ms. Ricci could catch him with it out in class.
Seriously, though, who would’ve thought?
Maybe “nice” was a word to describe Flash after all.
Or: 5 times Flash made an effort to be better, and 1 time he realized kindness begets kindness. After all, there’s plenty of love in the world for those searching with open arms.
(A Flash Thompson-centric 5+1 set between the events of There’s a Fine, Fine Line and If I’m What You Choose.)

You should check out Famidaily - 1041 episodes of every Nintendo Famicom cartridge release
Tumblr media
Today marks the end of the longest running chronological YouTube series on a video game library with over 1000 releases. RndStranger has been uploading daily episodes of each Famicom release with new episodes dropping daily hence the name Famidaily (Famicom daily).
Tumblr media
The series covers the often overlooked history and library of the Family Computer or Famicom for short. Documentation in regards to these 8-bit games on the English side of the internet tends to be in favor of the context of the NES rather than the Famicom. This has resulted in a very western biased history in regards to Nintendo's 8-bit console history and in many ways Famidaily illustrates just how different the game industry was in Japan compared to America and Europe. Not only that but a lot of Famicom releases which never saw the light of day outside of Japan are practically unknown to the rest of the world.
Tumblr media
Each episode of Famidaily is 5 minutes on average with shorter episodes being less than 3 minutes and longer episodes being around 8 minutes or more. He then describes the content of the game, how its played, and most importantly the historical aspect and reception of the particular game in Japan. There is a surprisingly amount of influential releases, truly great games, and downright awful train wrecks that are covered in Famidaily that you almost never hear anyone else talk about which makes this such a fascinating series to watch. Considering the reputation of the NES in English speaking circles it's actually insane how little the Famicom gets brought up considering the influences those original releases left that did make their way outside of Japan.
Tumblr media
These videos are not only fun to watch but they are an extremely useful resource when it comes to not only researching these games but also understanding the library and particular releases which makes playing and collecting them much more fun and interesting. If you popped in a lot of these releases with no context I'd imagine you would have trouble figuring out how to play and even if that isn't an issue just being able to get the proper context is truly refreshing.
Tumblr media
Easily one of my favorite episodes hands down goes to Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti. Outside of Japan this game is well known as a hidden gem that was exclusive to the Famicom. But this episode highlights a story that I am shocked nobody else has ever brought up considering how historically important it is when it comes to the relationship with Namco and Nintendo at the time. It's notably Namco's final Famicom release for a good while after their original licensing contract expired with this game releasing just one day before said contract was set to expire. Understanding this also helps to explain why all of Namco's previous 1989 releases turned out the way they did. You truly learn something new when watching this series.
Tumblr media
That leaves us to today on November 7, 2023 where the final episode of Famidaily was released covering the final Famicom cartridge release Takahashi Meijin no Bouken Jima IV, better known as Adventure Island IV outside of Japan.
Tumblr media
I cannot recommend this series enough, it's absolutely worth your time even if you aren't interested in playing a lot of these games. RndStranger does plan on continuing to upload daily videos for the rest of the year and in 2024 he has plans to cover the Famicom Disk System with the series Year of FDS.
Tumblr media
To wrap this up, I might as well mention the total runtime of Famidaily. On average it will take you 116 hours to be caught up with the final episode and that is not counting the dozens of bonus episodes that have also been released alongside the regular daily videos. So go out there and learn something new about Nintendo's original 8-bit cartridge machine and its library. You won't regret it.
