Where are my hcs that being a source dragon’s conduit has given Lloyd some really weird dragon features. Like he used to be more Oni than dragon bc he was directly related to Garm/the dragon heritage was recessive but now dragon horns are forcing their way outta his damn skull. My Color – The Song of Living

Having completed Lucky Cyan’s arc, it makes a lot of sense that hers is the first to end well, for the most part. “My Color” is at the heart of that.

I had wondered why the green lights appeared when Luo played the guitar here in episode 9. Did the Dean get a special guitar? Isn’t the green light connected to Cyan’s power? Why does it only appear sometimes when the guitar is being played?

Then I realized that the lights only appear for ��My Color”, specifically.

Similarly to Lin Ling being shoved into the liar’s role as Nice’s replacement, or Yang Cheng being held up as a younger, cooler E-Soul, Cyan is forced to perform a role through the expectations of others – that of a faceless, holy maiden there to fulfill the wishes of others, less person than symbol.

But why does Cyan succeed in saving herself and Luo?

The answer lies heavily in the origin of Cyan’s luck.

We’ve been primed up to this point to see Trust in a darker lens, as something that changes and warps those heroes in the public eye – the more belief the masses have, the more the hero is forced to become the image they are meant to embody. Lin Ling has to struggle to break out of Nice’s suffocating persona. Yang Cheng awakens his abilities due to one child that quickly is overwhelmed by all the expectations and stressors placed on him.

But Cyan is different. Her luck is not the result of a marketing campaign, nor was it a result of a warped ideal of her built up in others’ minds.

The orphanage director treats Cyan’s luck almost like a burden of responsibility – since she has powers that can do good, she is obligated to do good (he is projecting, clearly). This gets twisted after her escape when he places the blame on her for the area’s ongoing bad luck. The truth was obscured from her, guilting her into believing that her good luck is a result of others’ misfortune – that the people on the plane died because she survived. In this sense, the director tries to make it so that somehow, Cyan has to “atone” for her fortune. She has to give back for the crime of… being alive? Wanting to live? Is that really so selfish of her?

The question of Cyan’s arc really is: does this girl have to become a savior to be worthy of her having been saved?

Of course not. And even though Cyan does become a hero, it’s important to note that she does so of her own volition for one very important reason. Cyan isn’t necessarily a justice-seeker. She’s not the unwavering conviction of Queen, or the inspirational hopeful that Lin Ling is, nor does she possess Yang Cheng’s fury at injustice.

Cyan is a truth-seeker, first and foremost. She wants to live honestly, and so she reclaims both the stage and her gift for herself. She is driven to act by the desire to remove distortion and clear up misconception. And the truth was that her luck was not what killed anyone. Her luck was the result of a joint wish, quite possibly the purest expression of Trust we’ve seen so far in this series.

The Trust these total strangers placed in Cyan was void of expectation, or a particular image or duty they wanted her to fulfill. The Trust was selfless. They just saw a little girl and jointly decided that if they couldn’t make it out, that she, at least, would survive, maybe pass along some messages, and carry their memories of their loved ones with her.

Whenever Cyan sings, she sings of protection and love. That wish spreads to others, bolstering the goodness in their own lives. When it’s not overcome by expectation, when Cyan is singing with true honesty and genuine love for life, her luck is at its most benevolent.

"She hasn't even gotten a chance to see the world yet."

The only expectation the plane crash victims ever had for Cyan is that she lived. They chose this sacrifice; her luck was not what killed them. She was not saved with the expectation she would be extraordinary. Just keep living on, and carry on the message to those we left behind - that those who died live on through her.

“My Color” was a lullaby that became a wish for a child to live.

That it’s Luo’s parents who started it all is pivotal. Luo, from the beginning, has been Cyan’s number one defender and best friend: honest, shameless, and invested in her personhood as opposed to her image. Unknowingly, he carried on the selfless actions his parents took, and carried their song with him.

When Luo sings “My Color”, he’s under the impression that he’s the one who wrote that song. Cyan recognizes it but cannot place where she’s heard it before. The song remains, but the truth of it, and the sentiment behind it, is hidden from them both.

It isn’t until Cyan manages to play the recording that the truth of the song is revealed. Every note, every word spoken, and its sentiment – it’s a declaration of parental love and protection.

This child must live.

"You're blessed with luck. I'll give you all my love. Even when I'm gone, you're in my arms, defending you at any cost, I swear."

"Let me pass my color to your heart. My story stays in you. Someday, I hope you'll feel it too."

Cyan hears her parents and the voices of all those people who assured her life’s safety, finally receiving explicit confirmation that the best way for her to honour them is simply to live her life fully.

Luo hears his parents’ voices for the first time in years; hears them singing the song he'd forgotten but carried with him all along, and comes back to himself. They weren’t hapless victims of luck. They, along with everyone on that plane, made a choice - just as he did.

He wasn’t waiting for Cyan to come back for him. His sacrifice was not conditional. His aim was to get her out and he did. He listens to her concert over the radio with a smile. With Fear no longer tainting him and clouding his mind to the truth, Luo remembers why he chose to live his life in the way he did, and he is reminded that he is loved, and needs to live too.

And that is why Luo survives. He is allowed, just like Cyan, to live, because that is what that wish, that song, and that Trust was always intended for.

That sentiment lived on, even if neither of them initially remembered the truth – when Cyan was alone, Luo was there for her. When Luo succumbed to Fear, Cyan was there for him in turn – in some way, she kind of did end up “paying back” the luck the initial singers gave her by saving their son.

The wishes of the people on the plane will live on in Cyan, no matter how she chooses to live her life. The spark of kindness that started with his parents likewise lives on in Luo.

And now, from that moment onwards, whenever either of them sing that song, they will see these lights – two orphan kids saved by the manifestation of the warmth of their parents' love, and the love of total strangers, that urges them to live on, and live truly.

"Good night, Cyan. Good night, Luo."

Sylvia: Ah, Agent Dusk. You've finally returned from your long term operation to investigate that human experimentation lab. Hopefully this should give Twilight and Nightfall some reprieve from our staffing shortages... so, what is your report?

Dusk: I discovered the lab was attempting experiments to develop... well, for lack of a better term, telepathy in human beings. Unfortunately, the lab itself has long since been liquidated and most of the records destroyed, and those they were experimenting on had either been liquidated as well or were moved to a different site. But... I was able to uncover records from one particular subject who apparently managed to escape. I've included all the details in my report.

Sylvia: Excellent work. Your next assignment will be given to you shortly.

*Dusk leaves*

Sylvia: To think... Telepathy. The ultimate weapon against spies. But then again I suppose anything is possible. Perhaps we should try to track down this escaped subject if possible... Let's see here... Subject is a female, would be around five years old by this time, with pink hair, green... eyes... with... attention span issues...

Just coincidentally happened to want to go swimming in a pool where another child was drowning... just coincidentally happened to asked to go to a part of the lodge where the owner was about to attack another victim... was able to be completely calm while wearing a bomb collar that was coincidentally later determined to be a dud... Oh my fucking god she is fucking psychic. He adopted a fucking psychic. W-was she in on it? Does she know? She has to know, but... was she here to spy on us? Or did she join one of the longest term, highest risk operations WISE has ever performed for fun? ...Oh my god wait she loves spy cartoons. She DID do it for fun! Our highest security operation got reverse-infiltrated by a bored five year old! I'm gonna have a fucking aneurysm...
