#GO WATCH NIMONA

((Edited to add that Nimona is no longer free on YouTube. You can still find it on Netflix or through... other means.))
My favorite thing about Nimona now being available on YouTube is obviously that everyone can access it for free, which goes such a long way for queer kids.
But my second favorite thing is that I can now go through the movie literally frame by frame.

i just found out about nimona's christmas special from 2013 and-
Tumblr media
i don't think my heart can take it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"this is why people hit you" pls 😭😭😭
Tumblr media
ambrosius has been a dramatic bitch since day one, i love it. and bal is just like *sigh* he's an idiot but he's MY idiot. gotta save his ass, i guess.
Tumblr media
he protecc, he atacc, but most importantly- he got his friend's bacc 😤
Tumblr media
he's just a little guy *cries*
long story short, ballister gives ambrosius the christmas gift and acts oblivious, like a good friend he is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
having witnessed this, i love how their dynamic as adults seems like a very natural progression from what they had as kids. if you just ignore, well, the whole you're my archnemesis and we need to fight each other because of a terrible incident in our past we have never honestly adressed or explained. but yeah, they're just so very sweet and caring, truly a black cat and golden retriver energy at its finest.
based on this i would also guess ambrosius is younger than ballister, with the way he looks and with this childlike innocence and naivety. that, or he's just always been smaller than bal. either way, it makes me think how ambrosius is an easy target for bullies and how ballister feels responsible for him and his safety/happiness. i wonder if looking at the perfect, golden imagine adult ambrosius has created, ballister ever saw the scrawny little boy with a black eye who hid behind his back.
he probably did, huh.
the idea that they were raised together, grew up together, fallen in love at some point, spent their whole lives together, really, makes me go crazy. how both of them lost the only friend they ever had, a friend they were never allowed to fully love.
i made myself sad, but the point is the world needs more bal and amb-ro-zee-us as little boys. they're everything

ID: 6 gifs of Nimona and Gloreth from the movie Nimona.
Gif 1: Nimona, after having just shapeshifted in front of Gloreth, is holding out an apple for Gloreth to take. Gloreth looks uncertain, taking a few steps back and looks away in the direction of the village. Nimona looks down at the ground, sadly.
Gif 2: Gloreth places her hands around the apple. She smiles at Nimona and nods her head slightly before taking the apple.
Gif 3: Nimona has just shapeshifted in front of the entire village and is quickly being surrounded by villagers armed with pitchforks and torches. Gloreth tries to run to Nimona, shouting "No! Stop! Stop! She's my friend!", but is held back by her parents.
Gif 4: Gloreth's mother kneels by Gloreth's side and holds both her shoulders as she firmly tells her "She's a monster", referring to Nimona. Both Gloreth and her mother look over at Nimona.
Gif 5: Nimona takes a few steps towards Gloreth, saying her name. Nimona then cuts herself off as she sees Gloreth picking up her wooden sword.
Gif 6: A fire burns behind Gloreth as she points her sword at Nimona. She looks a bit uncertain at first but tells Nimona "Go back to the shadows from whence you came."

Ambrosius: They're gonna love you... Like I do.
Me: Aw.....
Also me: I'm calling it now, either one of them dies or they become enemies in a cruel twist of fate.

"After all that struggles we can finally rest together Bal". Ambrosius smiled, slowly turning around to sit on the old sofa. He kept saying that they should buy a new one, as they can afford it, but Ballister always said that it will stay because of "sentimental value".
Nimona went to the city to get some pizza so they had some time only for themselves. Goldenloin knew exactly how he wants to spend it - cuddle with his boyfriend, while watching one of his favourite films.
Well, things didn't go as Ambrosius planned - he fell asleep during the film. At least Ballister didn't mind it, he even found something sweet in it, especially when he could cover golden hair with a blanket and whisper in his ear "goodnight golden boy"

Since it keeps getting brought up together with Nimona (which is currently free on YouTube and you should watch it a thousand times), I decided to watch Disneys Wish and,,,
I mean it's not an awful movie. I'm on the fence whether I'd call it bad, but it definitely is inadequate.
The movie refuses to commit to anything. The animation style is caught between storybook and refusal to let go of their 3D formula. The story has several beats it could play off really strongly, but refuses to engage with: The kingdom can't decide if it's a fascist state or a free land under a kinda wack dude. It can't even decide if the people there are happy or not. The dissonance in language is ridiculous, especially within the songs. Your villain song by the medieval king sorcerer should not start with "Peep the name" or randomly talk about genetics?? (I'm pretty sure they only included this so they could make a vague joke about his ass, since the line is "I got these genes from outer space", with "genes" sounding the same as "jeans" - which also have no place in the setting.) I don't think anything could have prepared me for the sucker punch that is a bunch of woodland creatures singing about being shareholders.
I also feel like the audio mixing during the songs is off, I think it's because it doesn't account for atmosphere and the acoustics of its locations, but I do not have a good audio brain. Someone else is more qualified for that.
There's a bunch of cinema sins level criticisms I could make about the story, like "why doesnt anyone outisde the kingdom learn magic" or "mathematically it makes no sense to assume every wish would be granted", but I think that goes against good faith criticism.
The movie also has a huge problem with showing vs telling. We have two characters dedicated to hyping up how much Asha cares for everyone, and within the movie she acts pretty much opposite to that claim. Similarly, we're told that the king clearly rose to this power and status by being so cool and charismatic, but every time he opens his mouth he sounds like a pseudo-intellectual twitter thread.
And don't get me started on the whole self-references thing. I'm normally fond of easter eggs like that, but these just shatter immersion into little pieces. There's a scene where the villain just describes the plots of three different Disney movies. Instead of giving the protagonist a distinct outfit, she spends half the movie wearing the Fairy Godmother's cloak. The entire movie's premise is just "When You Wish Upon A Star".
I do like the attempt at diversity, Asha's best friend using a crutch to get around is never pointed out as unusual and her friend group is presumably diverse in character and race. Unfortunately, I can only name two of them. I can't even tell you how many people the group consists of, that's how undefined they are.
I don't like shitting on a piece of media/art because even if it was created by a shitty greedy garbage studio to hit their ridiculous release schedule, there are always genuinely passionate artists involved in the production. It's a shame they didn't get to shine in this mediocre disappointment.
Anyway, go watch Nimona.
