“Mortal characters, as it happens, do not see Hera at all (cf. Il. 1.208). Jason does not know the identity of the old woman he carries over the Anaurus; Hera's agency is mostly hidden from the Argonauts; and it is left to the prophet Phineus to explain that of all the gods the most concerned with Argo's voyage is Hera (2.216-17). At one point the Argonauts do hear her terrifying, aether-shaking cry of warning about Ocean (4.640-42) - an action that recalls the Homeric Hera who gives voice to the natural world: honoring Agamemnon with portentous thunder during his arming scene at Iliad 11.45-46 and granting speech to Achilles' horse Xanthus at 19.407. There is a greater divide between the mortal and divine worlds in Apollonius than there is in Homer, but this division serves to highlight the activity of Hera, who enlists many allies and modes of expression in order to bridge that gulf. I'm not sure if someone already talked about the parallels between Anthy and Hera here, but I'm going to do it anyway. So.. let's begin, shall we?

First off.. let's talk about the most obvious ones. Anthea is an epithet for the greek goddess. As you can see Anthy and Anthea are very close names. Hera is mostly known as a goddess of weddings and women, tying in with Anthy's Rose Bride role, but she's also the sister and wife of Zeus, a notorious playboy (or unfortunately in the most cases, a flat out rapist) which is a clear parallel to Akio.

Hera is infamous for being jealous of Zeus' various lovers and their children and inflicting curses and torture onto them, but rather instead of provoking Zeus for his behaviour, she is passing aggressively lashing out at him since she can't attack him directly because of his superior status. All of this sounds a lot like Anthy.

By the way here is one interesting fact you probably didn't know about: Dios is an alternate form of the name Zeus, which most people don't know was much more used in Antiquity than Zeus was.

I fully think of hebe as a carbon copy of younger Hera. This is mainly because I know some consider her name to be a possible epithet of Hera's youth. I also imagine her as rather shy and slightly sheltered. Not in Hera being an overprotective mother kind of way but more in a always by her mother's side by choice kind of way. However, I do remember reading somewhere that Heracles claimed to love Hebe before he was killed. I also remember reading somewhere that sometimes it is Hebe herself who brings Heracles to Olympus. I’m not sure of the sources and they may be fake, but it is cool to think about. Imagine your general existence angers a goddess so much she tries to take you out as a baby, drives you to madness as an adult to kill your wife and kids, send monsters, and tortures you your entire life. You have dozens of lovers both men and women, and still end up falling in love with your mortal enemy's daughter.

The beauty of Hera

"If the image of the most beautiful woman in the ancient world had its place in a sanctuary of Hera - and not of Aphrodite - it is because there was a privileged relationship between the goddess of marriage and beauty. This relationship was perfectly felt by most of the ancient authors. Already Homer who calls it λευκώλενος (“with white arms”) mentions that it was she who gave beauty and reason to the daughters of Pandareos while Aphrodite provided them with food (Od., XX, 70)

For the author of the Homeric hymn, the goddess had an unequaled beauty (ὑπείροχον εἶδος: Hymn to Hera, v. 2) which “much surpassed the others goddesses” (Hymn to Aphrodite, v. 41), and Pindar (Pyth., 11,70) to describe Hera uses the superlative: ὑπείροχώτατη (“superior to others”). Unlike Aphrodite, the wife of Zeus possesses both physical charms and moral qualities."
