I think Masha is really cool, so I gave them a Palisman. They also start taking classes at Hexside after visiting the demon realm with Vee. And then they both carve Palismen together assisted by Hunter!

Miserable assholes, that's basically how snitch works. It basically guarantees victory, unless the other team scored more points, which happened once. And Harry Potter is not relevant anymore. Barely anyone talks about it.

I really admire the writers for how they tend to handle limitations in this show and really make them work in favor of TOH, because I think about how Hexside originally wasn’t supposed to be that prevalent in S1, but then executives mandated it be. And instead of being begrudging about Hexside and dropping it the first moment they had as soon as S2 –with its greater creative freedom– rolled around, the writers actually made it work and continued to see Hexside through all the way to the end, instead of punishing fans who DID end up liking it. And that was quite a few of us, indicating it was done well enough to appeal.
The writers had the school setting play into Luz’s neurodivergency by showing how she learned differently, it played into Eda’s arc by having her get over her own biases and personal issues to let Luz grow, eventually leading to her starting a university. We got to see learning reframed in a positive light for a lot of these kids who are considered weirdoes for wanting that, and the beginnings of rebellion against the coven system. With Luz, this emphasized how she didn’t fit into any binaries and categories, which is a major motif she learns to be proud of. The theme of education and people being allowed to learn magic for its sake goes hand in hand. And Hexside provided the backdrop for a lot of important episodes. It’d end up being relevant to Hunter’s arc later on, and he was introduced properly in S2!
Plus, the shortening; With how that worked, the crew had to rush a lot of stuff, squeeze in a lot of major events within S2B. But they made the crowded feeling work, because it really helped you feel as helpless as the protagonists because they were being overwhelmed with so many revelations and issues. It helps the viewer relate to Eda’s sense of hopelessness, her lack of a plan. It made Edge of the World more tragic, because Luz tries to distract herself from the trauma of Hollow Mind with what seems to be a low-stakes adventure and this is explicitly brought up as a way to keep the kids safe… But it just ends up tying back into Hollow Mind and the Day of Unity anyway, showing that there is no escape.
It’s like Pandora’s Box, the point of no return, the story event that’s activated the ending. It’s surrounding everyone on all sides, and with the Day of Unity impending, it feels as if there just isn’t enough time, both on a meta and in-universe scale. There’s no space to breathe, and that uncertainty of things ending too fast is recaptured; In a way, it’s as if the end of the show being brought about too soon for viewers is like the end of the world coming for the protagonists.
And again that makes me think of how Dana Terrace explicitly said that she wanted to focus on the good, the benefits, of the altered story and how the writers had to make things work and tie together in response to all that; “Limitation breeds creativity,” she said as her justification. And she said she was proud of the storyline they otherwise wouldn’t have done, and I agree now that I’ve seen it!!! It’s different yet meaningful in its own apples way, just as the original un-shortened plan would’ve been in an oranges way. Idk it’s just really cool, and I can see why that inspired Dana to attempt a ‘Choose your own adventure’ format for a Patreon project, to again have fun with that on-your-toes experience, before she had to focus on her new job.

The Owl House Post-Finale/Post Watching and Dreaming Roleplay Request
Anyone up for an Owl House roleplay with me? I was hoping for a roleplay that takes place during the timeskip of the show, sometime after the finale.
I also want Palisman to play a big role in the roleplay as well. I love the concept of palismen so much that I was hoping if we RP that we can have it play a bigger role than it did in the canon series.
I also wanna do a thing with King going to Hexside and making friends, falling in love, and even making some enemies in the process. Maybe have him form his own Hexsquad.
Here are the ships I wanna do for this RP (some of the names of the characters of the canon background characters are based off of MoringMarks headcanons):
Luz x Amity
King x OC
Cat x Sibley (Pufferfish bipedal demon in the abominations track with the sloth Palisman)
Boscha x OC
Amelia x Lucas (the blond guy with the black beanie in the oracle track uniform who is a part of Boscha’s group in the episode Once Upon a Swap)
Eda x Raine
Jerbo x Edric
Viney x Emira
Skara x Fled (The brown bat biped demon who was in the beast keeping hexside uniform who went to grom with Skara)
Gus x Matt
Vee x Masha
Perhaps the two human students who talked to Luz and worked the haunted Hayride with Masha at Thanks to Them, along with Vee and Masha’s friends could also play a role as well.
Anyways, anyone wanna roleplay with me? OCs are allowed BTW. Anyways, lemme know in the comments below if you wanna roleplay with me

TOH Meta: Hexside analysis (size, schedule, clubs, staff roster)
Tumblr media
We spend a lot of time at Hexside School of Magic and Demonics throughout the course of the series, but some things are never really explained. For my own reference, I'm compiling as much canon information here as I can about Hexside and the people who work there (plus a couple headcanons).
1. How many students attend Hexside?
In the show, most track-specific class sizes range from 3-4 students. For example, this Abominations 101 class from season one has 4 students, with seating space for 12 max.
Tumblr media
However, I have reason to believe that this is not all the Abominations students! There are probably other classes for advanced students that meet later in the day (more on that in the Scheduling section below).
Let's say there's a (generous) average of 8-12 students per track. Multiply that by 9 tracks and we get 72-108 students, plus 8 in the baby class, for a total of about 80-116 students total.
Tumblr media
The all-school assembly in Labyrinth Runners seems about that size.
Tumblr media
Yep, around 100 students. Hexside is quite small!
Based on the visible school uniforms in season 2 episode Them's the Breaks, Kid, there are at least six magic schools on the Isles: Hexside, Glandus, St. Epiderm, and three others we don't have much information about.
Tumblr media
I don't think we can accurately speculate school sizes from this one event, but for reference, Eda was the only representative from Hexside at the IFWOT that year. Glandus sent two students, and St. Epiderm sent five (including Raine Whispers and Gilbert Park, Willow's dad!), so those schools may be slightly bigger than Hexside.
2. What is the schedule like?
Tumblr media
Upon Luz' arrival, Bump gives her a schedule for the day with 6 different potions classes. I know this is meant to be a joke but I'm accepting that Hexside has a 6-block schedule where classes gradually increase in difficulty (hopefully with a lunch break in there somewhere!!) and that electives (club meetings, free periods, or any non-track-specific class like history/math/PE) are less frequent.
Gus mentions 'moving up a few grades', but since it's essentially a tiny K-12 school and the options at Luz' entrance exam are A) the baby class or B) the not-baby class... I think it's more likely the students are separated by level/ability, not strictly by age, and that Gus was moved up to the illusions track a few years earlier than expected. Or maybe there's a middle-school equivalent between the baby class and the track system that focuses on basics (like reading and runes), and we've just never seen it?
My headcanon is that the morning (periods 1-3) is for the beginner-level track classes. During this time, older students go to their electives like PE, history, math, language, or maybe even apprenticeships. In the afternoon (periods 4-6), they switch: track professors do advanced classes with the older students, while the younger ones go to their electives. Basing this on S1E9, where the older illusion students are taking some kind of practical exam in the Illusions Homeroom, but Gus is scheduled to be in a different, non-illusions class for that block (which he ditches to go to the Human Appreciation Society meeting).
Tumblr media
But even if this is not the case, with such small classes, it would be easy to differentiate to multiple levels and give each student lots of one-on-one attention.
3. What clubs are there?
Tumblr media
From the club fair in Any Sport in a Storm, we know that Hexside has a lot of student clubs, including:
Grudgby, Flyer Derby, The Good Witch Azura book club, Swimming, Hexas Hold'em, Screech and Debate, Fear Book, Drama, Gardening, Arts & Witchcrafts, Grom Decorating Committee, Skullpting, Casket Weaving, Brews n' Stews, Inner Demons, Scrying Committee, and Psychics.
There is a school newspaper called the Hexside Free Press.
Gus is the president of the Human Appreciation Society (not to be confused with the roleplaying Human Fantasy Club down the hall).
Tumblr media
4. Who are the teachers?
Principal Hieronymus Bump
Tumblr media
Attended Hexside as an abominations student (and played flyer derby!), joined the abominations coven, and came back to work as the abominations teacher while Eda and Lilith were students. He was promoted to Principal sometime after that. Firm, fair, open-minded, will defend his students from threats. Retires during the timeskip. As principal, he has the power to approve track switching and multi-track study, though he seems at least somewhat beholden to the whims of the Parent Creature Association (PCA) and has to play nice with the Emperor's Coven to get enough funding for the school.
This confirms that Hexside is a public school, or at least mostly state-funded, as opposed to St. Epiderm which is implied to be a private school (Raine mentions high tuition and scholarships in S2).
Professor Hermonculus - Abominations Track
Tumblr media
Critical, strict, petty. Punishes his students with extra homework and pits them against one another with that dumb "TOP STUDENT" badge. Holds a grudge against Willow for changing to the plant track and even sends Amity to the principal's office for misbehavior. Very passionate about flyer derby.
Unnamed purple triclops demon - Illusions Track. My headcanon name: Professor Houdine
Tumblr media
Stylish, caring, protective of her students -- in Labyrinth Runners her priority was to get Gus away from the Coven Scouts, and she was willing to trade Hunter back to Belos to accomplish that goal (though she probably didn't know or care what would happen to him). Seems to do a lot of assessments; encourages creativity and humor in her students. She becomes the new principal after Bump's retirement.
Unnamed spider demon - kindergarten/baby class. My headcanon name: Cera Fangston
Tumblr media
Super cute!! I love her design and she appears to be a genuinely good teacher. Plushies, books, and art supplies all over the classroom, field trips to the astral planes... I hope she was okay after the day of unity because the kids descended into madness without her.
Unnamed parrot (?) demon - Potions Track. My headcanon name: Professor Sinder
Tumblr media
Put a pun ("Let's mix it up!") and little doodles of potions flasks on her board, which I appreciate. Spends a lot of time with Boscha and appears to do nothing about her bullying other students, which I do not appreciate.
Unnamed bicorn - Oracle Track. My headcanon name: Professor Claire Lydgate
Tumblr media
Serious, mysterious, detail-oriented. Cool aesthetic, but... let's be honest. That is WAY too many chalkboards. I can see why she has to keep her crystal balls in the hallway! Also, the oracle track's whole thing is ghosts, but I guess she ignored the decades-old ghost infestation in the girls' changing room and left it for other people to clean up?
Tumblr media
Yeah. So she's either not very powerful or not very considerate of others. Maybe she's the one who keeps eating all the donuts in the staff room.
Unnamed snake (?) demon - History, math (?) My headcanon name: Professor Ladon
Tumblr media
He doesn't like chatting in his classroom, but he sure LOVES grudgby! He teaches History and something about the Heximal System, so that's possibly a lower-level math class? His classes appear to be larger and include students from many different tracks.
Tumblr media
Unnamed gray demon - detention track (temporary). My headcanon name: Mr. Eyevan Urgus
Tumblr media
Sarcastic, uses his scroll a lot, punishes students with cleaning the classroom, can sleep through anything. Was only supposed to be in charge of detention track temporarily while the detention pit was being repaired, but he stuck around in the background til the end of season 2 so I guess they found something for him to do. Maybe he's a substitute? Also a contender for the donut thief.
Unnamed blue demon with wig - Bard Track (?) My headcanon name: Professor Presto
Tumblr media
This guy appears in the background in Labyrinth Runners. I'm guessing he's the bard professor because... uhh... his robe is red (the Bard coven color) and the powdered wig reminds me of Mozart. I know that's kind of a stretch, but it's possible! The only other thing we know about the Bard professor is that they leave during the timeskip so Skara can take over.
Tumblr media
Skara's 15th birthday happens in season 1, so she's about 19 here and probably a first-year teacher.
Miss Jenkinmeyer (no image) - possibly a staff member while Eda was attending Hexside. There was an incident involving her teeth which wound up in Eda's permanent file. The incident report, that is. Not the teeth.
Hexside Guards (temporary security guards) - can literally smell trouble. They were supposed to be protecting students, but they ended up throwing a lot of people into the detention pit.
Tumblr media
That brings us to the end of all the canon staff members. Who is missing? We have no information on professors for the Healing, Plant, Beastkeeping, and Construction tracks, plus the PE teacher/athletic program director and any additional cafeteria/janitorial/admin staff.
I don't know if it's fair to make the snake-demon guy handle all the electives for every single student, so let's give him some help. One more electives teacher for "Spelling Class" (possibly language arts?). Heck, I'll throw in Astronomy as well because the movements of celestial bodies appear to be very important for casting powerful spells in the show.
Also... Hexside has a drama program and a championship sports program, both with VERY nice facilities.
Tumblr media
They definitely need teachers to oversee those. Maybe the Bard and Illusions professors team up for drama, and the gym teacher is also the Grudgby coach?
5. What about the building itself?
There's a lot going on! Aside from all the classrooms, they have a cafeteria, a detention pit with tunnels under the school, a gym, an auditorium, an outdoor athletics field, Grom's prison under the gym, and this cool round atrium near the entrance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are multiple floors, but I don't remember seeing stairs anywhere except for the seating in the gym.
Tumblr media
The abominations students have to wheel their homework everywhere anyway, so maybe there are no stairs and it's all spiraling ramps?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yay for accessibility!
Lastly, Eda's Secret Room of Shortcuts. It's one of the coolest concepts in the whole show, I wish we got to see it more.
Tumblr media
To anyone who made it this far, thank you for reading! Let me know if I should add anything :)

I really like the way you draw Gus and Luz in ur axe au it makes me so happy :33 also I was wondering what are the dynamics between the Hexside kids like if I may ask ^_^
Thank you for asking!!^^ Here what we came up with so far :>
Hunter never wanted to be at Hexside. He was stubbornly convinced his father had already taught him everything he needed to know—and as far as he was concerned, school was a waste of time. Unsurprisingly, he quickly became a troublemaker, much to the staff’s frustration.
Tumblr media
But despite his arrogance, Hunter wasn’t entirely alone. He’d befriended a few students he already knew from formal gatherings—Amity and Boscha among them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later, he even brought Gus into their group. Though Hunter acted protective of the younger boy (and genuinely admired his talents), he also had a habit of patronizing him—something Gus quietly tolerated… for now. Gus, shy and soft-spoken, would eventually grow a spine and become a voice of reason for both Hunter and Luz.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Amity maintained a secret friendship with Willow, though she still ran with the rich kids out of necessity. Also she might help Luz by talking to her father about time travel spells.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Boscha, who’d carried a childhood crush on Amity for years, despised Luz on sight—setting the stage for a rocky relationship that might evolve into friendship… or possibly something more hehe
Tumblr media
But first—Luz had a far more immediate problem: Hunter.
When she arrived at Hexside and started living there, his attitude immediately grated on her. He came across as a bully, and his arrogance infuriated her enough that she publicly confronted him. None of them had an idea they will become siblings very soonXD

Anyone else hate it when they call TOH a Harry Potter LWA rip-off?
I didn't watch Little Witch Academia, but I'm pretty sure the story is nothing alike, same with Harry Potter. The stories are different, protagonists are different, magic system is different, and the idea of the school of magic is older than Harry Potter, so saying it's a rip-off is very inaccurate.

Hexside’s Presence is Minimal
It’s worth noting that Hexside was always part of the pitch bible; Of course this world has a school for magic, and it likely would’ve served as a contrast with how Luz is learning from Eda.
But then as was confirmed, Disney mandated that Hexside be more important to the plot, especially in S1, because executives think high school plots are all the rage. Of course, clever creators can still make this work (think Batman Beyond), but it does make me look back at the show because in hindsight…
I remember seeing some people wish that the show explored more of Hexside itself and its curriculum and how Luz navigated it as a human. But I suspect this was because of the creators complying by the mandate only as much as they strictly had to; Thus, they didn’t dive more into these logistics because it was never their vision for Luz to have to grapple with them anyhow.
This goes with an epiphany I’ve had; That a lot of the episodes about Hexside could easily be rewritten in a way where Luz isn’t a student. There’s really only two episodes that strictly require it, in fact.
Escape of the Palisman? Luz wants to impress Willow and Gus by getting them to the Grudgby game regardless, so she takes Owlbert regardless.
Adventures in the Elements? Luz still wants to learn her second spell and might still be afraid of being judged by Amity. Granted, there’s less pressure on Luz to make a hasty decision, and you remove some characterization of Luz not wanting to be seen as weak or any less of a witch/student due to her own trauma struggling in her other school, which plays into The First Day. But still.
Understanding Willow? Luz would still feel obligated to help her friend with her burning mind. Though you do potentially remove Luz’s culpability in the entire situation, which is setup for a flaw that is resolved in Wing it like Witches.
Enchanting Grom Fright? Eda and King aren’t enrolled at Hexside but are still allowed to participate in Grom. So Luz would still offer to help Amity with it and Bump would still accept her as a substitute.
Wing it like Witches? Luz would still care about Willow and Gus being bullied, and get in over her head confronting Boscha about it as she sees an opportunity to be Azura, and subsumes Willow’s dilemma for herself.
Agony of a Witch? You could have Luz sneak into the field trip despite not being a student, such as by dressing as one.
Escaping Expulsion? Luz would still want to help her friends with the Odalia and Alador situation. Luz saying her friends don’t deserve this, and leaving herself out, does lose the implicit self-loathing though if she isn’t enrolled at Hexside and thus suffers no consequences. But then again she agrees to get pummeled for their sake anyhow…
Through the Looking Glass Ruins? Luz does not need to be a student to comfort Gus, nor does Gus necessarily have to be at Hexside at the beginning of the episode for Luz to find him saddened.
Hunting Palismen? The Bat Queen is giving Palismen to young witches in general so even if she’s not a student, Luz would still qualify to get one and thus she’d be welcome at the event.
Eda’s Requiem? Nothing strictly says the race allows only students, just kids.
Any Sport in a Storm? Luz could still help Amity with her school book club and they’d still want to confront “Mildred Featherwhyle” afterwards.
Labyrinth Runners? This one’s pretty self-explanatory.
For the Future? They’re visiting Hexside not because of school obligations but as a refuge from the Collector’s spies. Nothing about the story demands Luz having been a student there at any point.
Really, it boils down to two episodes that actually require Luz to be enrolled at Hexside; Something Ventured, Someone Framed is all about this, and it would suck to lose this really compelling and nuanced lesson that Eda learns. But even then, one could have her learn her lesson by trying, just for Luz to change her mind independently at the end of the episode, possibly scared off by the detention pit and students like Mattholomule.
But there IS The First Day, which is about Luz engaging with Hexside. It’s about her motif of doing everything and wanting it all, the jack of all trades. It’s a love letter to the ‘boring’ weirdoes who actually like to learn at school. It’s Luz making a difference in this world, and foreshadowing for Vee and the draining spell.
In the end it’s arguably only one episode that genuinely needs Luz to be enrolled at Hexside. And I find this all fascinating because it does suggest that the creators tried to make Hexside as minimal to the story as possible, and stay as true to their vision as possible. That being said, you could argue that the writers were still affected when it came to the premise of Luz learning from Eda.
Eda’s responsible for half of Luz’s glyphs, but as for the other two? Plant is essentially done offscreen at the start of Enchanting Grom Fright, but then that episode would still have to exist and justify itself for obvious reasons. And then there’s Wing it like Witches, which is ultimately about Luz, again, learning to distinguish playing out her fantasies with actually helping. You could have a version of this lesson where Eda’s more involved in helping Luz learn the Fire Glyph, with Lilith replacing Boscha entirely.
But then we don’t get to see Amity fulfill her promise to Willow, nor additional Lumity setup. So I think it’s worth considering that S1 had to balance Luz learning not just life lessons from Eda but magic as well, with the fact that there are only four glyphs and Eda not knowing about them is crucial to Luz’s struggle and arc. And then we have other storylines with other characters, including Luz’s peers. And considering one of them is queer rep, she’s definitely justified.
All of this is to say that the writers dealt with their mandates AND made Hexside work for their narrative, while also having to deal with it as little as possible in their writing. And the execution of the premise of Luz learning magic from Eda changed by having the glyphs be something hidden for Luz to find, as part of her relationship with the Titan as a character and setting, and the backdrop of colonization rendering knowledge lost.
There’s also the glyph combos in S2, but the point is that Luz reverses the dynamic by knowing more than Eda here and returning the favor, thereby displaying her growth, while also having Eda concede to Lilith and her own vulnerabilities, giving consequences to the curse and the S1 finale’s events. Plus the story evolving past its base premise as it gets more complicated.
TL;DR The writers found a way to minimize Hexside’s footprint within the show while still making the most of its presence as they’d always intended anyhow. And so there are other factors to consider in regards to Luz learning magic from Eda having to be balanced with other storylines and ideas as well (some of which may have been pushed more by executives), and there being limited time for this period of the story before the goals change as the stakes are raised beyond Luz’s education. Not to mention how the amount of magic Luz can learn from Eda is itself limited.
I think TOH’s first season works pretty well; That said, you can believe how executive meddling led to priorities being shifted, even if all of it does matter. Except Once Upon a Swap arguably but I think that episode is fine.
