I stayed away from the fandom for years. Can you summarize for me how Hussie (and some of his "friends") became such hated figures in this fandom? I know very little about what happened with Sarah Z's video and the drama of homestuck reddit vs kate mitchell

Andrew Hussie and WhatPumpkin had tried to sue Sarah Z for libel because of her critique on the shitty sequel that is Homestuck 2. It didn't help that HS2 was put on a long hiatus since December 25, 2020. He sent her a most unprofessional email like he would. But it wasn't until later on that it was revealed that Homestuck 2 was actually a money laundering scheme by Andrew Hussie to pay off his debts towards Viz Media. He lied to his freelance artists, claiming they are working on the project to help bring the series back to its full glory. The most funny part is that Hussie had tried to pitch Homestuck^2 to Viz Media and they rightfully REJECTED this and told him it was the bad idea. But he didn't listen. Andrew Hussie then decided to leave his name out of Homestuck, any future projects relating to it, including the HIveswap game that he Kickstarted and had misued the money, to live off with his money on IP alone. As for the Homestuck Reddit vs Kate Mitchell, besides the whole fact that Kate Mitchell is controversial for making lots of questionable remarks, takes, and had LITERALLY ADVERTISED HER NUDES ON HER PERSONAL ACCOUNT THAT WAS USED TO TALK TO HOMESTUCK FANS, she and Hussie had found out that Makin, the head of Homestuck Community Reddit and Discord, had created Homestuck.net. Which is an archive site for all things Homestuck media related. From art assets, fan games, music resources, and of course, Patreon exclusive posts for Homestuck^2. It was back in the early 2020s, way before the hiatus and Hussie cutting himself off. Andrew Hussie, Kate Mitchell, and others in WhatPumpkin like Aysha, are upset at them. Thinking they are infringing copyright in preserving some of the lost sprite art and other materials related to the series. There was rumors someone, not sure if it was WhatPumpkin or some random defender of Hussie, had accused Homestuck Community Discord, was sharing CHILD PORN, which was untrue. Andrew Hussie had sent emails to the mods and Makin, requesting the latter step down from his position and let Hussie and WhatPumpkin take control of the Discord. He also asked question about the mods sexuality for the sake of 'gender and sex composition'. Of course by the end, it failed and Makin is still around. I don't think it's been made public on either Twitter or Tumblr, as it is just kept within the Discord server itself. But they had release the email transcripts in a PDF file about all this. Of course, Makin isn't too much of a saint either as he accused the artist (HONE) for 'normalizing' the characters and plagiarizing a fan edit, not realizing who it was that made all the Homestuck Requiem promo art and that it was made WAAAAY before Pesterquest was out and approved by Viz Media themselves. He would then find out who it was and backpedaled, likely not having directly apologizing to HONE. The way I see it is two tards fighting each other. Wanna view the PDF file? (˵ •̀ ᴗ - ˵ ) ✧ I have been meaning to document some of the controversies and drama within the Homestuck series. Be it from Hussie, Whatpumpkin, and any other major incident. From how one Homestuck musician got kicked out for accusing Hussie on mistreatment of his music team to spending $10k on an office in New York to work on Hiveswap, it would be a history of all the things that had happened behind the scenes with evidence to back it up.

you should read homestuck so you can better understand this discourse. but yeah people really hate women (especially trans women) who work on Homestuck. it’s been a massive problem with the homestuck fandom (particularly the portion on reddit & the culture & community around them) for literally over a decade. they have been bullying women who work at What Pumpkin/with Andrew/on Homestuck until they quit for a decade now.

My longevity in a fandom depends how healthy the discussions are after the source material has ended its hype cycle.

I stayed with Homestuck for as long as possible until the sequel material became such a shitshow I was forced to leave for my sanity. I still talk to a lot of Homestuck fans.

I had to ollie out from Persona reddit every time I finished a game because it was gross and terrible.

Adventure Time i always held onto with bleeding nails but the discussion of that show always became sooooooo infuriating after a while that I had to get away.

Im still with shera because there isnt any shera discourse. Yes, the very worst shera discourse that has ever occured isnt a shadow of what has happened in my other fandoms.

It's difficult though. I've been forged in those other communities and my communication style doesn't jive with a lot of people here.

Real shit tho, just gonna reminisce here, gonna be a lil earnest and all: Homestuck was my first ever fandom back in 2016. What introduced me to fandom, and helped me really get into art. It's what drove me to WANT to get better at art so I could bring characters I loved to life and have them look as I envisioned them in my mind.

Karkat was my favorite and I really resonated with him, he was the first character I ever felt really, really attached to. I met so many great people, so many friends, a fun community for the most part. It was such an important part of my life, too, during a very bumpy time in my life.

For the first time in my little middle school life I felt a real sense of belonging. It helped me explore self expression, allowed me self expression in healthier ways, in a multitude of ways. It was the first place I could explore my queer identity, especially my transness, and be met with understanding. Where people really understood, ykno? Not even queerness, but just.. met me with understanding with how life can be sometimes.

Have people who were older than me treat me fairly as a kid, who gave great life advice, who didn't mind indulging me when I got hyper over my interests or characters I loved. It's probably ironic in some ass backwards way, but I don't think I'd be as mature as I am either, or, at least, know half the things I know now. I wouldn't be half the queermo I am today if it weren't for these funky little space aliens and the really cool and smart and creative people I met. It opened my eyes in a lot of ways. And I just... I dunno.

I might not be stuck in the house anymore but It's like driving down the road to look at my old childhood home once in a while just to sigh all wistfully a little before returning to the one I live at now :) ty karkat 4 being the guy of all time and sticking with me thru my formative years <3

My experience with the Super Mario RPG community.

This is my first post of 2025, and this is gonna be a vent post.

**Disclaimer: DO NOT HARASS ANYONE MENTIONED!!!**

I joined the SMRPG community back in December 2023 when I started having a hyperfixation on one of the characters Geno. I saved up a bunch of fanart of Geno and followed a bunch of artists, and it was pretty good.

The trouble started in January 2024 when a user called me out for asking multiple artists for art of Geno wearing pajamas and as a merperson. The thing was, I did not expect them to draw them for me, I just asked a simple question. Initially, I wanted nothing to fo with the drama because it annoyed me, but my curiosity and paranoia led me to respond to them. The worst part was that it was when I was turning 18, which will lead to a future event. I got pretty furstrated and then blocked them.

But then in March 2024, I unblocked them and the same user called me out for being a proshipper. This callout really hurt my mental health and led to many artists blocking me. I ended up confessing to me and they posted my apology with the anti proshitter tags. That callout is the reason why this blog exists, to reblog about proship discourse without the fear of callouts.

In April 2024, I joined the Mario RPG Central Discord, and it was pretty good there until I met someone called Serena Foxx, who was a fan of Geno as well. We connected well until I told them about the callout. They were sympathetic at first, but I was annoyed at their proship stance and wanted to change their mind, so I told them why proshippers were good, and she disagreed with me. She said that proshippers were bigoted pedophiles and write dead dove stuff and think it’s okay irl.

What really hurt my feelings was when she called me a pedo sympathizer when I told them people should be allowed to write what they want without being harassed. Out of desperation, I told one of the mods about the situation and about my foot fetish, which led to me being banned from the server. What happened before was that one of my mutuals who was also a fan of Geno posted navel art. They were accused of having a fetish and I became scared that I would be accused of having a fetish that out of a rash decision I confessed to someone about me having a foot fetish.

In May 2024, I became enamored with the webcomic Court of Roses by Nintendonut,1 one of the artists who made SMRPG art. Out of curiosity, I joined the Court of Roses Discord server so I could see. It went well at first, but as I was searching in the posts, I saw a post in which Foxx referred to me as a Chris Chan lolcow in the Homestuck community. This statement really hurt me because of what I’ve been through, but I kept holding up.

I do remembering one time that another user said that proshippers were annoying and that it was okay to callout people for posting gross fiction. I didn’t want to tell them otherwise because I was scared that I would be banned. I also disapproved of them and the other user’s use of the word proship. And then in June 2024, I got so angry that I made a post on Reddit about being called a lolcow. I told about this to a few people and later I ended up getting banned from the server for sending unsolicited DMs, talking about foot fetish to a minor, and harassing others.

Meanwhile ended up submitting some of Nutty’s characters in Tumblr kiss marry kill polls because I liked the characters. Nutty accused me of stalking them and referred to me as a creep. This broke me mentally because I loved Nutty’s art and webcomic, and it happened around their birthday.

I do not want to he associated with that part of the SMRPG community because these situations made me realize that I don’t belong there due to my behavior. To the people I have hurt or have made uncomfortable I am very sorry for what I have done. My mental state was not good, and I did not mean to hurt you. What I have done was irresponsible and I don’t want to be associated with that. I take accountability in my actions and will do my best not to do this again.

I don’t want to say my experience with the SMRPG community is all bad, I really enjoyed seeing the fanart people made, but me overusing social media, my rash decisions put a toll on my mental well-being and put a dent on my experience with the community.

2023: The year of all time

This felt like the first year post-COVID where things really kicked into high gear for me personally. My new year's resolution was that I would go out and have fun for once.

And had fun I did.

I did some voicework reading for a story podcast, I went to a bunch of amazing concerts (nothing beats seeing Weird Al for my birthday!), and I sorted out a bunch of RL stuff and put a neat little bow on it. Thank goodness.

But fuck all that sappy shit: Here's a small collection of things I really enjoyed this year!

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: An excellent sequel to a seemingly unfollow-uppable first film. Takes everything from ITSV, and amps it up to twenty with a stunning visual style, a sonically fitting soundtrack, and a meta-commentary on the nature of Spider-Man's character and whether they really deserve all the tragedy thrown at them.

Aunty Donna's Coffee Cafe: The guys who made Pud did another show, this time with funding from the Australian Government! While stripped back in its setting, they continue to provide the same stupid bullshit that put me into laughing fits as they did with their Netflix show. Haven't they done well.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off: I think when people heard about "An animated Scott Pilgrim show with the live-action cast and Edgar Wright producing", they did not expect "A proper dissection of Ramona Flowers' character and her motivations, as well as her own journey of forgiving the Evil Exes. Also lots of yaoi." Scott Pilgrim continues to dominate as the premier "guy learns not to be a shithead" franchise.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Live in Accor Stadium: The Peppers prove their pertained power as performers by playing the purest psalms in their prospectus from the past 35 years (eugh, what a mouthful). Flea came out, did a 30-second handstand, waved and said hello to the moon and then got up some people littering in the crowd. Their life is more than just a read-through.

Caroline Polachek - Desire, I Want to Turn Into You: I had absolutely no clue who Caroline was before I listened to this album. I now realise that she might just be the person that pop needs right now. A soaring collection of songs destined to become classics down the line, like a greatest hits compilation that doesn't exist. We're all on Caroline's island, and we ain't leaving.

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk: I kept my eye on this game as it was developing, and it was absolutely worth it to see it come through in the end. Satisfying gameplay that requires you to learn how to combo to progress, an addicting artstyle inspired by Y2K, and the soundtrack. Holy fuck the soundtrack. I just can't get enuf.

Weird Al Yankovic - TUROTRSIIIVT: Man, what a title. Emu Phillips come out swinging with jokes I did not expect, and then Weird Al comes out aggressively swinging, with all the songs you don't know him for. He then did a polka melody of his parodies, did a ritual halfway through, and then ended the concert on a high note. Only the best from Strange Alfred.

Doctor Who 2023 Specials: That bastard David Tennant returning led me down the rabbit hole known as watching Doctor Who, and did it ever pay off more than these specials. A trans woman saves the day and the Doctor realises he's bi, black, and needs therapy. A magnificent close on a chapter of one of the greatest sci-fis ever, and a bright step into the future.

The Hyperfixation of the Year award goes to none other than

Homestuck, everyone's favourite webcomic! Everyone's.

And I think that's partly because I joined this website to begin with. I probably say this all the time, but leaving Reddit was probably the best decision I could have made at that time. As much as I reminisce, the communities I was in began to get a little stale. Same jokes, same shitposts, a different day. Tumblr in some strange way, is not that. It feels less like a big communal website and more like a collection of small towns spread across a large spot of land. Calm and village-like, you know?

So to all my mutuals, my followers, to the people that liked and reboggled my stinky posts, to all that offered mealworms and crickets in my askbox, thank you. "Gecko Boy" might just be a silly lil joke in the grand scheme of things, but it's a fun joke to play into.

Whatever comes next year, I know I've got the energy to keep going. Have a good 2024 everybody. <3

The Alpha Troll Rewrite Project

I have long held that the Alpha Trolls should have been kept out of Homestuck, and recently happened upon the idea of integrating them into *Hiveswap* instead. However, these changes would still present the issue of, well, the Alpha Trolls. A motley crew, to be sure, never truly designed to carry a narrative, with few sympathetic characters you want to see succeed among them, even if you don't agree that they're also littered with stereotypes.

Thus, the Alpha Troll Rewrite Project. A collaborative effort where I ask on Reddit and Tumblr and recieve ideas from the community on how they would write the Alpha Trolls and the lore of Beforus, based on:

The Ancestors shown to us, and their designs (perhaps not the Handmaid's dress/coding, though).

Their appearances in Openbound, and for Meenah and Aranea, the rest of the comic.

The Beta Trolls; what unexplored aspects of their characters would you like to see reflected?

The stipulation that there be no inherent lifespan differential between Castes, a change I remain steadfast on.

The stipulation that the names of, at the very least, Rufioh, Aranea, and Horuss be changed.

And the arrangements of Vantas=Seer, Piexes=Thief, and shared name=shared Aspect from the Ancestors, with the further stipulation that, of course, there is one of each of the standard 12 Classes, and that the Knight of the Session be either Breath/Nitram, Space/Maryam, or Mind/Pyrope.

I will be posting specific threads for suggestions on each of them in the Zodiac arrangement every Sunday and Wednesday over the next six weeks (ie; Megido tomorrow, then Nitram, Captor, Vantas, Leijon... Piexes), featuring my ideas and seeking thoughts from the community.

Ever notice how older Juggalos are rude and gatekeepy as fuck? Like, I was browsing R/Juggalo and someone posted selfies of themself in their face paint asking to make some wicked clown friends and the comments were filled with "Elder Juggalos" calling them a Juggaho and an attention whore and telling them to go outside. Like, y'all were a kid trying to find a community once too and now that you have it this is what you're doing to someone who was exactly like you at one point? God y'all are fucking terrible. Makes me scared to interact with anyone above the age of 25 who's a Juggalo to be honest. I'm sorry for the unnecessary dump of information I just had to put it somewhere where someone would understand.

yeah i mean. outside of tumblr i don’t really go on the internet that much, so maybe i’m not the right one to ask. but i can see why you’d be put out by interactions like that.

the ‘older vs. younger/longtime vs. new fan’ friction is something that happens in kinda every fanbase ever, if you look around. gatekeeping is a bummer, but that’s sorta just what happens when any familiar landscape starts to change, it makes people uncomfortable en they start pushing back. in the case of ICP, there’s been such a huge wave of new (and reeeeally young) juggalos lately (i think cause of tiktok and homestuck getting more popular again & stuff?), so the landscape is changing like …….. a lot. & incredibly fast.

from what i’ve seen on this blog, it seems like a really high proportion of the newer and younger fans getting into ICP are also blogging about topics like dissociative identity disorder/systems/alters, being neurodivergent, neopronouns, xenogenders, OCs, furry stuff. i’m personally all for minding my own business and letting people talk about whatever they want (especially when they’re minors, like what the fuck? leave ‘em alone), but yknow. that ‘type’ of fan is understandable really, really different from the type of fan who grew up 30 years ago. yknow? i’m a young person, i’m intersex and queer, and even i don’t really ‘get’ what a xenogender is. if i was a cishet white guy born in 1980 who only uses reddit and facebook, i’d probably be confused as shit.

not defending anyone being a gatekeepy/bigoted/sexist asshole, but it’s something to consider when you’re wondering where all the hate is stemming from (i.e., discomfort). with a ton of new, wildly different fans starting to enter an established fan community, there’s some likelihood of people getting defensive and reacting immaturely about it.

ULTIMATELY THO …….. pls remember, people are basically always more shitty on the internet than in real life. if you show up to the Gathering or a local show, i think you’ll find people to be a lot more welcoming. any self-proclaimed ‘juggalo authority’ who wastes their days posting insults on reddit is a crusty piece of shit and not worth your time, if you ask me.

so what was the deal with the drama around the art in the first requiem cafe art?

I wasn't here in 2023 so that is why i am clueless

First was that the depiction of the characters. It was on-model and not like the Pesterquest counterparts. So characters like Terezi, Feferi, and Aradia look thin despite fanon and Pesterquest has them looking plus sized. People accused it as fatphobic.

They also accused the artist (who is HONE, but nobody knew at the time who made all the art assets for the cafe since Requiem Cafe and WhatPumpkin had kept them anonymous for some time) as being racist because Roxy's hair was not curly like her Pesterquest self.

The biggest thing they accused the artist the most is the fact they think she PLAGERIZED someone's edit of Roxy. A Pesterquest Roxy edit had been posted on Reddit that had her with the scarf and people were surprised to see the promo art have this. People accused her for STEALING.

The worst part of all, Makin, who is in charge of the Homestuck Community Twitter and Discord server, WAS THE ONE WHO TRIED TO CALL OUT THE ARTIST AS PROBLEMATIC despite the fact they were the same group that were given permission to help PROMOTE Requiem Cafe.

The art for Roxy was then changed to avoid further backlash.

It wasn't long until AFTER the Homestuck x Requiem Cafe collab was over that it was revealed that it was HONE who made that art. HONE is a popular Japanese artist who worked on Homestuck. She contributed illustrations to [S] Collide. She says she made the old designs way before Pesterquest was a thing. Makin did not apologize directly to her after this reveal. TL;DR People accused the artist was racist, plagiarist, and fatphobic that the art had to quickly be changed. Makin, who runs Homestuck Community, tried to tell everyone that she is this. But when they found out the art was made years before Pesterquest release and was made by Japanese artist HONE, they backpedaled and did not apologize directly to HONE. The old Roxy art with the scarf, was never released due to the backlash and we will never see the full body sprite because of this incident. I was lucky to have managed to get the full resolution of the old art before it was changed. The Jake and Jane sprites also had coincidentally had stuff like the Pesterquest counterpart (Jane's red glasses, Jake's black coat), but was changed to be separate from Pesterquest.

I hate Supernatural, Riverdale, Euphoria, Wednesday, etc.

I don't watch shows often, merely rarely when I see something that interest

I don't engage in fandom content except for two video games, and even then I'd call my engagement minimal (no shipping, no art, no headcannons, no fanfiction reading or writing)

I lose a brain cell for every "eat the rich" or "down with blues" post because it got boring quick after the 3rd one

I'm in the lgbt+ community but I'm quiet about it, indifferent really to that own part of my identity, and don't really enjoy loudness anyway

I'm not a fan of authority, so whenever I see posts with "reblog you cowards" or "reblog if you support blank" my inner punk kicks in going you can't tell me what to do and I scroll pasts

Stim boards ain't hitting anything for me, not even making them, although I make stimming documents and rituals for myself all the time

I have no sense of humor so half the jokes do nothing for me, maybe even gross me out because I'm sex repulsed

Sometimes we all need to contribute to make a place like Tumblr keep going. Honestly, if Twitter and reddit fall, half the repost accounts will run dry. There might be just as many text posts as before but boy hardy do we need to take responsibility and make the content we want to see. Well while that is already done the dissemination of people to different platforms seems to have lessened the community here. Of course that then means us lurkers need to exist more. I remember the times of Homestuck, I remember the hay day of Slenderman. Tumblr has a long history, and it has outlived many fandoms that seemed to fuel it. We might not be able to relive our first time seeing marble hornets, nor can we put the ending of game of thrones or HIMYM back in the bottle. But we can be the creators of something new.
